The real-time monitoring of densely populated areas with high seismic and volcanic risk is of crucial importance for the safety of people and infrastructures. When an earthquake occurs, the Earth surface experiences both translational and rotational motions. The latter are usually not monitored, but their measurement and characterization are essential for a full description of the ground motion. Here we present preliminary observational data of a high-sensitivity rotational sensor based on a 2-km-long fiber-optic Sagnac gyroscope, presently under construction in the middle of the Campi Flegrei Volcanic Area (Pozzuoli, Italy). We have evaluated its performance by analyzing data continuously recorded during an acquisition campaign of five months. The experimental setup was composed of a digital nine-component seismic station equipped with both a rotational sensor and conventional seismic sensors (seismometers, accelerometers, and tiltmeters). During this experiment we detected seismic noise and ground rotations wavefield induced by small to medium local earthquakes ( M D <3). The prototype gyroscope shows a very promising sensitivity in the range of 5×10 -7 -8×10 -9 r a d / s / H z over the frequency bandwidth 5 mHz-50 Hz. Future upgrades and perspectives are discussed.

Modulation transfer spectroscopy is used to demonstrate absolute frequency stabilization of an 8.6-µm-wavelength quantum cascade laser against a sub-Doppler absorption of the C H F 3 molecule. The obtained spectral emission properties are thoroughly characterized through a self-referenced optical frequency comb, stabilized against either a GPS-disciplined Rb clock or a 1.54-µm Er-fiber laser locked to a high-finesse ultra-low-expansion optical cavity. Fractional long-term stability and accuracy at a level of 4×10 -12 (at 100 s) and 3×10 -10 , respectively, are demonstrated, along with an emission linewidth as narrow as 10 kHz for observation times of 0.1 s.

We report on absolute measurements of saturated-absorption line-center frequencies of room-temperature trifluoromethane using a quantum cascade laser at 8.6 μm and the frequency modulation spectroscopy method. Absolute calibration of the laser frequency is obtained by direct comparison with a mid-infrared optical frequency comb synthesizer referenced to a radio-frequency Rb standard. Several sub-Doppler transitions falling in the υ 5 vibrational band are investigated at around 1158.9  cm -1 with a fractional frequency precision of 8.6·10 -12 at 1-s integration time, limited by the Rb-clock stability. The demonstrated frequency uncertainty of 6.6·10 -11 is mainly limited by the reproducibility of the frequency measurements.

We review the most recent technological and application advances of quantum cascade lasers, underlining the present milestones and future directions from the Mid-infrared to the Terahertz spectral range. Challenges and developments, which are the subject of the contributions to this focus issue, are also introduced.

We report a thorough analysis of the spectral properties of an ytterbium-doped fibre amplifier, seeded by a Nd:YAG laser, whose linewidth has been narrowed down to 1 Hz by locking the laser to an ultrastable reference cavity. We measured the phase noise contribution from the amplifier, showing that it does not depend on the amplification gain, nor on the seed laser linewidth. Moreover, the amplifier-induced phase noise does not affect the final linewidth, as verified by heterodyne linewidth measurement within the 0.2 Hz resolution bandwidth of our acquisition set-up. Preservation of spectral purity below Hz-level is promising for more demanding applications, from nonlinear optics to frequency/time-standard transfer over fibre links.

We report on efficient cw high-power second harmonic generation in a periodically poled LiTaO3 crystal placed in a resonant enhancement cavity. We tested three configurations, differing in the coupling mirror reflectivity, and a maximum conversion efficiency of about 76%, corresponding to 6.1 W of green light with 8.0 W of fundamental power, was achieved. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the highest cw power ever reported using a periodically-poled crystal in an external cavity. We observed photo-thermal effect induced by photon absorption at the mirrors and in the crystal, which however does not affect stable operation of the cavity. A further effect arises for two out of the three configurations, at higher values of the input power, which degrades the performance of the locked cavity. We suggest this effect is due to the onset of competing nonlinearities in the same crystal.

The spectral characteristics of an integrated acousto-optic tunable filter (AOTF) as well as its responsivity to the rf driving signal and sensitivity to temperature changes are experimentally investigated and quantified using a diode-laser-based interrogation system. A spectroscopic technique, exploiting the rf frequency modulation of the laser beam and the phase-sensitive detection of the AOTF transmission, has been used for this purpose. That allows for the generation of a dispersivelike signal, which serves as a reference for tracking any wavelength change of the filter's peak with high resolution. The possibility of using the integrated AOTF as a spectrum analyzer with this interrogation scheme for fiber Bragg grating (FBG) strain sensing is also discussed.

We show the defect dependence of the internal field in Lithium Niobate using a full-field interferometric method and demonstrate that it can be directly measured on some clusters of defects embedded in a stoichiometric matrix. Results show that the value of the internal field grows in proximity of defects and vanishes far from them, which addresses the long-standing issue about its origin in Lithium Niobate crystal.

In-situ monitoring of domain reversal in congruent lithium niobate by a digital holographic technique is described. While the ferroelectric polarization is reversed by electric field poling, the two-dimensional distribution of the phase shift, due mainly to the linear electro-optic and piezoelectric effects, is measured and visualized. Digital holography is used to reconstruct both amplitude and phase of the wavefield transmitted by the sample to reveal the phase shift induced by adjacent reversed domains during the poling. The resulting movies of both amplitude and phase maps, for in-situ visualization of domain pattern formation, are shown. The possibility of using the technique as tool for monitoring in real-time the periodic poling of patterned samples is discussed.

An electro-optic device applied as an optical beam deflector and switch at different wavelengths has been built and tested. The electro-optic device is based on domain-engineered lithium niobate (LiNbO3). In this paper, for the first time, its operation has been visualized by an imaging camera. The device has been characterized both at the visible wavelength (632.8 nm) and at a typical telecom wavelength (1532 nm). Furthermore, the device has been tested as an amplitude modulator in the mid-infrared region as well, at a wavelength of ~4.3 microm, where no Pockels cells are available. A detailed description of this device is given, and the experimental results are discussed.

We demonstrate fabrication of periodically poled lithium niobate samples by electric field poling, after patterning by interference lithography. Furthermore we investigate the poling process at an overpoling regime which caused the appearance of submicron dot domains very similar to those induced by backswitch but different in nature. We show the possibility for realizing submicron-scaled threedimensional domain patterns that could be applied to the construction of photonic crystals and in nonlinear optics. We show that high etch-rate applied to such structures allows to obtain pyramidal-like submicron relief structures which in principle could find application for waveguide construction in photonic bandgap devices.

We report saturated-absorption spectra recorded by use of 5 muW of infrared radiation coupled into a build-up cavity. Single-pass generation of difference-frequency radiation tunable near 4.25 mum in a periodically poled LiNbO(3) crystal was used. Lamb dips of weak transitions of the fundamental rovibrational band of CO(2) were observed, for what is believed to be the first time, up to the J=82 level. Application of these results to the extension of frequency-comb-based metrology in the infrared is discussed.

We demonstrate the generation of cw tunable far-infrared radiation by mixing a quantum cascade laser and a CO>(2) laser in a W-Ni metal-insulator-metal diode. The first known spectroscopic application to the recording of an H(79)Br transition near 4.47 THz is reported.
