The Koningin Wilhelmina School was a prestigious Dutch-language Protestant school for the daughters of the Javanese nobility in Yogyakarta. Opened in 1907 through the efforts of a group of elite Protestant women in the Netherlands, supporters of the Dutch Reformed mission saw the school as a tool to reform the spiritual and moral lives of young Javanese girls. At the same time, the school presented local parents with an opportunity to anchor their daughters more firmly in the Javanese colonial elite. This article investigates how the Dutch teachers at the school tried to provide their Javanese students with a surrogate Christian family to create distance from their milieu of origin. An analysis of letters by Koningin Wilhelmina School graduates shows how this particular effort to partly remove children from their own culture opened the door for highly diverse life trajectories. De Koningin Wilhelmina School was een prestigieuze school voor de dochters van de Javaanse adel in Yogyakarta, met Nederlands als voertaal. De onderwijsinstelling, die in 1907 geopend was met hulp van een groep vrouwen uit de Nederlandse protestante elite, werd door de gereformeerde missie gezien als een instrument om het spirituele en morele karakter van Javaanse meisjes te hervormen. Tegelijkertijd gaf de school ouders uit de hogere Javaanse klasse de mogelijkheid om hun dochters deel uit te laten maken van de Nederlandstalige koloniale elite. In dit artikel wordt onderzocht hoe Nederlandse leraressen op deze school hun leerlingen van een alternatieve christelijke familie probeerden te voorzien, om zo afstand te creëren tussen de kinderen en hun oorspronkelijke milieu. Een analyse van brieven van oud-studenten van de Koningin Wilhelmina School laat zien hoe deze poging om kinderen deels van hun eigen cultuur te vervreemden uiteindelijk voor deze alumni mogelijkheden creëerde voor zeer uiteenlopende levenskeuzes.

Despite Africa’s position as today’s primary ‘donor’ of adoptable children, the historiography on the development of adoption networks on the African continent is close to non-existent. Even fewer publications elaborate on the missionary and religious roots of transnational adoptions in Africa. This article investigates transnational adoption practices of Rwandan and, to a lesser extent, Burundian minors in postcolonial Belgium (1970-1994). Additionally, it explicates continuities and departures with regards to colonial child separation practices in the former Belgian mandate territory Ruanda-Urundi. By studying the heterogeneous content of individual adoption case files from the two main agencies that organised the transfers, we uncover the language and practices that rendered the children ‘adoptable’ and we address how the Belgian intermediaries legitimated the relocations, and, more specifically what this teaches us about the ways they envisioned ideals of childhood, family, solidarity and society. I furthermore argue that the mediators styled Belgium as a caring and colour-blind 'motherland', shifting its former patriarchal role of the ‘humanising’ coloniser to one in which the nation becomes a ‘mother’ of children from the previously colonised territories. As such, this research contributes to a better understanding of how postcolonial attitudes, practices and networks were shaped and maintained in Belgium during the second half of the twentieth century. Hoewel de meeste adoptiekinderen vandaag uit Afrika komen, staat de historiografie rond de ontwikkeling van adoptienetwerken op het Afrikaanse continent in de kinderschoenen. Nog minder publicaties gaan op zoek naar de religieuze en missionaire wortels van transnationale adoptie in Afrika. Dit artikel bestudeert transnationale adoptiepraktijken van Rwandese en, in mindere mate, Burundese minderjarigen in het postkoloniale Belgie (1970-1994). In het bijzonder expliciteert dit artikel continuiteiten en veranderingen met koloniale praktijken van kinderverplaatsingen in het voormalige Belgische mandaatgebied Ruanda- Urundi. Door de heterogene inhoud van individuele adoptiedossiers van de twee voornaamste adoptiewerken die de verplaatsingen organiseerden te onderzoeken, komen we de taal en praktijken op het spoor die de kinderen ‘adoptabel’ maakten, kunnen we beschrijven hoe Belgische bemiddelaars de verplaatsingen legitimeerden en wat dit ons leert over de manieren waarop zij idealen over kindertijd, familie, solidariteit en maatschappij verbeeld hebben. Ik demonstreer verder dat deze bemiddelaars Belgie presenteerden als een zorgzaam en kleurenblind ‘moederland’. Hierbij bogen zij de patriarchale rol van de ‘humaniserende’ kolonisator om en beschouwden zij de natie als een ‘moeder’ voor de kinderen van de voormalige kolonies. Zo draagt dit onderzoek bij tot een beter begrip van de manieren waarop postkoloniale attitudes, praktijken en netwerken in het Belgie van de tweede helft van de twintigste eeuw gevormd en in stand gehouden werden.

This article discusses children’s novels about Eurasian children who were sent from the Dutch East Indies to the Netherlands for the purpose of character reformation. The corpus shows a remarkable dominance of girl characters, while in actual practice it was mostly Eurasian boys who were sent away for secondary education. I explain this discrepancy between literary text and socio-historical context through the shaping influence of literary genre – that is, of the tomboy story in this particular case. This deflection largely invalidates colonial children’s novels as reliable sources of information about historical educative practices, but it makes them all the more informative regarding the attitudes and values that drove these practices. I conclude by observing that these attitudes and values were anything but homogeneous or coherent, but allowed for a certain bandwidth of variation, which undercuts stark contrasts between colonisers and colonised. Dit artikel bespreekt kinderboeken over Indo-Europese kinderen die vanuit Nederlands-Indie naar Nederland werden gestuurd met het oog op karaktervorming. Opvallend genoeg spelen meisjes het vaakst de hoofdrol in deze romans, terwijl het in werkelijkheid vooral Indo-Europese jongens waren die naar Nederland werden gestuurd voor middelbaar onderwijs. Ik verklaar deze discrepantie tussen literaire tekst en sociaal-historische context vanuit de sturende rol van literaire genre-conventies, in dit specifieke geval, van de zogenaamde ‘bakvis roman’. De dominantie van literaire genres diskwalificeert koloniale kinderliteratuur als een betrouwbare bron over historische opvoedkundige praktijken, maar het maakt ze des te informatiever waar het de houdingen en waarden betreft die ten grondslag lagen aan deze praktijken. Ik concludeer dat deze houdingen en waarden allesbehalve samenhangend of homogeen waren, maar een grote onderlinge variatie vertonen, wat het idee van een scherpe tegenstelling tussen kolonisator en gekoloniseerde ondergraaft.

Although researchers have been pointing to the central position of children in colonial ‘civilising’ projects for years, colonised children remain a historical population that is notably hard to research. This article engages colonised children as central historical actors, by using a collection of missionary photographs taken in Dutch New Guinea (present-day West Papua) between 1905-1925 to study Marind children’s lived experiences and changing positions in a society increasingly dictated by Dutch colonial governance. By applying Ariella Azoulay’s method of ‘watching’ photography, in other words by examining the temporal and spatial dimensions in which the participants in the event of photography moved and interacted, this article aims to approach photographed children as protagonists in colonial history. This approach offers contrasting perspectives to the dominant missionary discourse in the textual archive in which children constitute a marginal and passive presence. Photographs not only have the power to make children visible and transform faceless masses into individuals, but – crucially – allow for a historical analysis centred around children’s movements, actions, and bodies. Children and their bodies – where they were located, which skills they had to learn, the clothes they wore – were the subject of decades-long Dutch colonial policy. Photographs are an indispensable source for recognising and understanding the implementation of this policy as well as colonised children’s responses to it. Watching photography allows historians to see and study young individuals whose lives were in no way marginal, and should be brought into focus in colonial history. Onderzoek heeft uitgewezen dat kinderen een centrale positie innamen inkoloniale ‘beschavingsprojecten’ en daarin uiteenlopende rollen vervulden. Niettemin is de aanwezigheid van kinderen in koloniale archieven vaak gering, anoniem en indirect en blijven gekoloniseerde kinderen bijgevolg een moeilijk te onderzoeken historische groep. Dit artikel beoogt om gekoloniseerde kinderen als historische actoren centraal te stellen, door middel van een analyse van een collectie foto’s gemaakt door missionarissen in Nederlands Nieuw-Guinea (het huidige West-Papua) tussen 1905-1925. Het doel is om de leefwerelden en de veranderende sociale posities te bestuderen van kinderen in een samenleving die in toenemende mate werd gedicteerd door het Nederlandse koloniaal bestuur. Met behulp van Ariella Azoulay’s methode van ‘watching photography’, waarmee zij bepleit om de temporele en ruimtelijke dimensies waarbinnen de deelnemers aan het fotografisch proces zich bewogen in ogenschouw te nemen, worden gefotografeerde kinderen als protagonisten in koloniale geschiedenis geconcipieerd. Deze benadering contrasteert met het dominante discours in het tekstuele missiearchief, waarin kinderen een marginale rol spelen en als volgzaam gepresenteerd worden. Foto’s maken kinderen niet alleen zichtbaar en als individuen identificeerbaar, maar maken daardoor ook historische analyses mogelijk van de verplaatsingen, de handelingen en de lichamen van de kinderen. De lichamen van jonge mensen – waar ze zich bevonden, de vaardigheden die ze leerden, de kleding die ze droegen – waren vele jaren de inzet van Nederlands koloniaal bewind. Foto’s zijn een onmisbare bron als we dit koloniale beleid, maar ook de respons van de gekoloniseerde kinderen zelf hierop, willen kennen en begrijpen. De methode van ‘watching photography’ maakt een historische analyse mogelijk met deze jonge individuen, wier leven op geen enkele manier marginaal was en die een centrale plaats in de koloniale geschiedschrijving zouden moeten innemen.

This case study aims at looking behind the construal of imperialism as ‘white people saving brown children from brown people’ by reconstructing the reasons why locally enslaved children became available for missionaries of the Utrechtsche Zendingsvereeniging (UZV) to purchase in Dutch New Guinea between 1863 and 1898. This analysis shows that, contrary to what the missionaries often claimed, children within local communities in the area of the Bird’s Head, Cenderawasih Bay and Biak-Numfoor islands were carefully raised to become part of the complex gift-kinship-systems of their people. However, some children, as well as adults, had the misfortune to live on the fault lines of competing or conflicting communities. Children were probably sold to repair systematic differences in power and wealth between inland and coastal peoples. Especially children who were already in a weak position – orphans, or children who became related to sorcery – were the first ones to be sold. Within local communities, after they were given away, sold or captured, children could be kindly adopted within another family, exploited to work the land, further traded or used in negotiations. Precisely during the first decades of the missionaries’ presence, the tensions and violence between inland and coastal communities raised, due to an uncontrolled boom in the hunt and trade of birds of paradise. This international market thus augmented those fault lines that ‘produced’ children for local slave markets, and, in the end, for missionaries to purchase. The missionaries themselves could only buy these children within the rationale of yet another ‘economy’: a western Christian-humanitarian economy in which the missionary ‘redemption’ of locally enslaved children raised money and support for the missions back home. De Utrechtsche Zendingsvereeniging (UZV) rechtvaardigde haar aanwezigheid aan de noordkust van Nederlands Nieuw-Guinea tussen 1863 en 1898 onder andere door lokaal tot slaaf gemaakte kinderen vrij te kopen, oftewel, door ‘bruine kinderen te redden van bruine mensen’. Dit artikel probeert te reconstrueren wat er achter dat beeld schuilging: hoe kwam het dat kinderen aan de zending te koop werden aangeboden? Dit artikel toont eerst aan dat kinderen uit deze regio’s van Bird’s Head, Cenderawasih Bay en de Biak-Numfoor-eilanden, anders dan de missionarissen beweerden, zorgvuldig binnen hun lokale gemeenschappen werden opgevoed en in specifieke gift-verwantschapssystemen werden opgenomen. Vervolgens wordt gereconstrueerd hoe en waarom sommige kinderen, net als sommige volwassenen, terecht kwamen op de breuklijnen tussen verschillende gemeenschappen die met elkaar in competitie of in conflict waren. Kinderen werden wellicht door hun eigen gemeenschap verkocht om onevenwichtige machtsverhoudingen tussen groepen die in het binnenland en aan de kust leefden te herstellen. Met name kinderen die al in een zwakkere positie verkeerden – wezen of kinderen die in verband werden gebracht met tovenarij – werden het eerst verkocht. Nadat ze waren verkocht of geroofd werden kinderen soms in hun nieuwe gemeenschap geadopteerd, maar soms ook uitgebuit en vaak weer verhandeld. De zendelingen vestigden zich in Nieuw- Guinea juist op het moment dat de jacht op en de handel in paradijsvogels ongecontroleerd toenamen. Deze internationale markt versterkte de breuklijnen en de gewelddadige spanningen tussen de lokale gemeenschappen, waardoor er meer kinderen op de lokale markt voor slaven terecht kwamen, en er uiteindelijk ook meer kinderen aan de missionarissen te koop werden aangeboden. De missionarissen zelf konden deze kinderen alleen verwerven binnen de logica van een ander soort ‘economie’, namelijk een westerse, christelijk-humanitaire gifteconomie waarin het ‘vrijkopen’ van deze tot slaaf gemaakte kinderen waardevol bleek voor een toenemende Nederlandse fondsenwerving en steun voor de zending in Nieuw-Guinea.

In the last decade, a heated public debate broke out in the Netherlands about the extreme violence that Dutch security forces perpetrated in Indonesia between 1945 and 1949. Similar discussions cropped up in France and the United Kingdom. Exhaustive comparative research into excessive violence in Indonesia, Algeria, Indochina, Malaysia, Kenya and other places during the decolonisation wars has nevertheless only been sporadic. This forum is based on the initial findings of a recent research project and a conference that explored the options for more targeted comparative research. The provisional results that we share here demonstrate that although the armed conflicts strongly differed from each other, there were more similarities than differences in the ways in which extreme violence was used in them and the explanation for it. We conclude that all cases involved some form of institutionalised impunity, which enabled the type of situation in which the forces in the service of the colonial rulers were able to use extreme violence. Het afgelopen decennium is in Nederland een verhit debat ontstaan over het extreme geweld dat militairen in Nederlandse dienst hebben gepleegd in Indonesie tussen 1945 en 1949. In Frankrijk en het Verenigd Koninkrijk zijn soortgelijke discussies ontstaan. Grondig vergelijkend onderzoek naar buitensporig geweld in Indonesie, Algerije, Indochina, Maleisie, Kenia en andere plaatsen tijdens dekolonisatieoorlogen is echter zelden verricht. Dit forum is gebaseerd op de eerste uitkomsten van een recent onderzoeksproject en een congres waarin de mogelijkheden voor gerichter vergelijkend onderzoek zijn verkend. De voorlopige resultaten die wij hier delen laten zien dat de gewapende conflicten weliswaar sterk van elkaar verschilden, maar dat er meer overeenkomsten dan verschillen zijn in de manieren waarop extreem geweld daarin werd toegepast en kan worden verklaard. We concluderen onder meer dat in alle gevallen sprake was van een vorm van geinstitutionaliseerde straffeloosheid, die het soort situaties mogelijk maakte waarin troepen in dienst van de koloniale machthebbers extreem geweld gebruikten. The birth of the Low Countries is a thorny issue since the rise of history as an academic discipline in the nineteenth century, and the problem is likely to haunt historians for some time to come. From the eleventh century onwards, the patchwork of principalities that had emerged between France and the German Empire acquired a distinct cachet as most of these principalities became exceptionally urbanized. As Flanders, Brabant, Guelders, Holland, and so on were all fiercely independent, scholars all agree that the increasingly structural socio-economic integration of these urbanised regions did not automatically lead to political integration, even if the ruling dynasties of these principalities were prone to intermarry. Yet, this political integration did take shape in the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries when a series of contingent factors – ranging from bankrupt princes to accidental deaths – allowed a collateral branch of the royal house of Valois to inherit, to purchase, or to conquer a lengthy string of principalities that eventually stretched from Frisia to the Franche-Comté.
