We will investigate the motivational factors related to the support for bottom-up vs. top-down regulation of social distancing and health-related behaviors during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as individual willingness to engage voluntarily in those behaviors. Additionally, we will try to explain support for radical governmental measures in the context of the pandemic.

The goal of the study is to examine the motivational underpinnings of activist intentions and behaviors. Specifically, we will test the role of 1) the absolute and relative importance of political cause(s), and 2) the facilitating vs. conflicting impact of political engagement when considering the other goals people have on their political intentions and behaviors. We will additionally explore whether the hypothesized relationships are the same for peaceful vs. violent actions and intentions.

The study focuses on the relation between working conditions during COVID-19 pandemic, perceptions of labour unions and willingness to engage in labor union activism.

Wave 3 - preregistration of additional longitudinal analyses

Current research goal is to investigate space exploration perception among general public and students in Europe and USA. People’s attitudes towards space exploration are polarized and ambiguous. It is perceived as necessary and exciting but at the same time too costly and less important than other societal needs. Space exploration perception is also highly related to various societal factors such as gender, age, science literacy, political orientation. In this project we investigate various predictors of space exploration acceptance and support such as perceived importance, perceived value and expacancy of space exploration goals, or perceived facilitation and conflict of space exploration and other social goals.

The study has two main goals. The first goal focuses on the relationship between satisfaction with working conditions, personal agentic vs. communal goals, and willingness to engage in labor union activism (vs. individualistic ways of coping with adversities at work such as apathy or increased engagement in work). The second goal relates to the influence of perceptions concerning relations among workers and employers, solidarity, class conflict, attitudes towards labor unions and willingness to engage in actions aiming at improving workers situation (vs. individualistic ways of coping with adversities at work mentioned above).

In two studies, we plan to investigate how goal structures are associated with engagement in political activism. The aims are following: 1. We will identify the types of goal structures related to activism (e.g., how balanced vs. Imbalanced it is) 2. We will compare how goal structures of activists and non-activists may differ. 3. We intend to explore new measurement methods for studying goal structures in the political and activist context. In Study 1, we plan to interview activists and nonactivists who both support the same political goals but differ in their level of behavioral engagement. In Study 2 we will conduct focus groups with moderate and radical activists as well as nonactivists to validate and enrich the findings from the first study.

This research is part of the "Trust in Science and Science-Related Populism Many Labs Study" (TISP) initiative. The primary questionnaire will be distributed in many countries; the details are available here: https://projects.iq.harvard.edu/manylabstrustinscience. However, we have added several additional questions and this pre-registration is concerned with these measures. Specifically, we focus on the perception of instrumentality of different sources of knowledge and epistemic conflict between science and other sources of knowledge.

Whereas some actions are spontaneous and have consequences that are experienced nearly immediately, other actions are planned in advance, and there is a delay between the intention and the outcome. Currently, it is unclear how, if at all, the temporal dynamics of setting an intention impacts the sense of agency (Pacherie, 2015). The current research aims to address this issue and investigate how the delay between forming an intention and experiencing outcomes of one’s actions affects the sense of agency. Moreover, the mixed results obtained in past studies could indicate that contradictory mechanisms may be involved. To address these inconsistencies, we propose two studies that will investigate two possible mediating processes: expectation-outcome congruence and a feeling of having an unconstrained choice. In both studies, participants will be asked to perform a planned (vs. unplanned vs. externally planned) action, and their sense of agency, as well as proposed meditators, will be measured. Study 1 will be conducted online using a between-subjects design. Here, we will also explore the role of personality traits that may moderate the effects of planning on the sense of agency. Study 2 will be conducted in the lab using a within-subjects design and will additionally include an implicit measure of agency (i.e., a temporal binding task).

This project will examine the relationship between the goal of fighting the COVID-19 pandemic and the problem of economic inequalities. Specifically, we will examine how 1) the threat of the pandemic and 2) the perceived interconnectedness between the pandemic and economic inequalities influence the intentions to engage in activism for the latter cause.

The main goal of the study is to examine the role of the stage of goal pursuit (new vs. old goal) on the sense of agency experienced regarding the goal.

This study will explore the relationship between the opinions and behaviors associated with the COVID-19 pandemic on the one hand and opinions and actions related to other social problems on the other hand (i.e., climate change, discrimination of minorities, discrimination of women, economic inequalities, threats to democracy).

In this experiment we test how radicalism of a political party affects goal importance, feeling of significance, and willingness to engage in actions for that party.
