The main purpose of using different data collection methods is to collect the best quality data by taking into consideration the budgetary constraints; has been produce. In the literature, although there are a lot of studies for comparing web and e-mail data collection methods, there is no study in which telephone, e-mail-web and e-mail-self-administered data collection methods are applied with sequential mixed mode design and the results are compared. The main purpose of this study is to examine the effects of different methods of data collection, such as telephone, web and e-mail on the quality of collected data. The reason why the research is carried out on the education faculties is that the teacher education system is of great importance for the world and our country. Three different questionnaires which are prepared for three different data collection methods, were sent to 96 deans who work in education faculties in Turkey. e-Mail-self-administered mode at the first step; e-mail-web mode in the second stage, and third step telephone interview mode was applied and 17, 12 and 5 deans answered respectively. The highest response rate was obtained from the e-mail method. When the answers to the questionnaires were examined, it was not observed that a regular problem about item-nonresponse or in open-ended questions existed, It was observed that in the telephone interbiew, interviewers offered more additional information during the interview. Moreover, numerical questions in the telephone interview can not be given clear numbers. On the other hand, the importance of the location of the interviewer at the time of the interview was understood. From the answers to the questionnaire, it was understood that the problem area which should be solved most urgently about the teacher education system was the enter the education faculties and the training process in the faculties of education. According to the respondents, Turkey's historically most important problem areas for teacher education system was these areas. As a result, when the target population has a small size, what it is possible to have access to contact information, and where the education level of respondents is high, it is considered that choosing the web mode will have a higher response rate. Literatürde, web ve e-posta ile veri toplama yöntemlerinin karşılaştırılmasına yönelik olarak çok sayıda çalışma bulunmasına rağmen, telefon, e-posta-web ve e-posta-kendi kendine yöneltilen veri toplama yöntemlerinin sıralı karşık metod dizaynı ile uygulandığı ve sonuçlarının karşılaştırıldığı bir çalışmaya rastlanılmamıştır. Bu çalışmanın temel amacı, eğitim fakültelerinden telefon, web ve e-posta yolu ile elden veriler ile farklı veri toplama yöntemlerinin toplanan veriye olan etkilerini incelemektir. Araştırmanın eğitim fakülteleri üzerine yapılmasının nedeni ise öğretmen yetiştirme sistemi konusunda dünya ve ülkemiz için büyük öneme sahip olmasıdır. Araştırma kapsamında hazırlanan üç farklı veri toplama metodu için hazırlanan üç soru kağıdı Türkiye’deki eğitim fakültelerinde görev yapan 96 dekana iletilmiştir. İlk aşamada e-posta; ikinci aşamada web ve üçüncü aşamada telefon ile görüşme metodu uygulanmış ve sırasıyla 17, 12 ve 5 dekandan geri dönüş alınmıştır. En yüksek cevaplama oranı ilk aşamadaki e-posta metodundan sağlanmıştır. Soru kâğıtlarına verilen cevaplar incelendiğinde belirli bir sorunun yoğun olarak cevapsız bırakılması durumuna rastlanılmamış, açık uçlu sorularda telefon ile görüşmede cevaplayıcıların daha fazla ilave bilgi sunduğu gözlemlenmiş ve sayısal sorularda telefon ile görüşmede net rakamlar verilemediği görülmüştür. Diğer taraftan telefon ile yapılan görüşmelerde görüşmenin yapıldığı anda cevaplayıcının bulunduğu lokasyonun önemi anlaşılmıştır. Soru kağıtlarına verilen cevaplardan öğretmen yetiştirme sistemine ilişkin en acil ve önemli müdahalenin eğitim fakültelerine giriş ve eğitim fakültelerindeki eğitim süreci olduğu anlaşılmıştır. Cevaplayıcıların, Türkiye’nin, öğretmen yetiştirme sistemine yönelik geçmişten bugüne var olan en önemli sorun alanlarını bu alanlar olarak gördüğü tespit edilmiştir. Sonuç olarak, hedef popülasyonun büyüklüğünün az, iletişim bilgilerine erişebilmenin mümkün ve cevaplayıcıların sahip oldukları eğitim seviyesinin yüksek olduğu durumlarda internet aracılığıyla gerçekleştirilmesinin daha yüksek cevaplama oranına sahip olacağı öngörüsüyle yararlı olacağı değerlendirilmektedir. Fakat burada, açık uçlu sorulara verilecek daha fazla bilgiden feraget edileceği de unutulmamalıdır. Bu araştırmanın, özellikle bütçe kısıtı bulunan ve cevaplayıcılarına e-posta ve telefon numarası bilgilerine sahip olunan araştırmalarda hangi veri toplama metodunun kullanılması gerektiğine yönelik katkı sağlaması beklenmektedir.

There are few studies on migration for educational purposes, both in Turkey and around the world. However, as a result of globalization and shortening of distances, the movement of migration for educational purposes increased and continues increasing. This situation reveals the necessity of working on this subject. In this thesis, we analyzed the information about the profile of students who change their place of residence for university education. First, as a background, an information about the development of universities in Turkey has been given, and accommodation problems arising from this development have been mentioned. Also information about General Directorate of Credit and Hostels (KYK), the largest public institution that provides housing opportunities for university students in Turkey, has been given. As the major concept of this thesis, the aspect of gender and distance of educational migration has been examined based on the information of students who applied to be accommodated in KYK hostels in 2017-2018 academic year. In addition to multiple linear regression analysis, the relationship between gender and distance has been examined with descriptive statistics. Besides demographic, social and economic characteristics of students, their scores in university entrance exam have also been examined according to the gender and the distance. The average distance between the hometown and the university of students have been calculated as 443,89 km for female students and 512,81 km for male students. According to the analysis conducted by the ordinary least squares method(OLS), male students study in universities which are located at longer distances from their hometown than female students. Moreover, when descriptive statistics are considered, in all social-demographic groups male students move longer distance than females. Ancak, küreselleşme ve bunun sonucu olarak mesafelerin kısalması ile birlikte eğitim amaçlı göç hareketleri giderek artmaktadır. Bu durum da konu hakkında çalışma gerekliliğini ortaya çıkarmaktadır. Bu tezde, Türkiye’de üniversite eğitimi için ikamet ettikleri yerleri değiştiren öğrencilerin profilleri incelenmiştir. İlk olarak, Türkiye’de üniversitelerin gelişimi hakkında bilgi verilmiş ve bu gelişime bağlı olarak meydana çıkan barınma sorununa değinilmiştir. Türkiye’de üniversite öğrencilerine yurt olanağı sağlayan en büyük kamu kurumu olan Kredi ve Yurtlar Genel Müdürlüğü (KYK) hakkında bilgiler verilmiştir. Tezin ana konusu olarak 2017-2018 eğitim-öğretim döneminde KYK yurtlarında barınmak için başvuran öğrencilerin bilgileri üzerinden Türkiye’de eğitim amaçlı göç cinsiyet ve mesafe bazlı incelenmiştir. Çoklu doğrusal regresyon analizinin yanısıra, tanımlayıcı istastikler kullanılarak cinsiyet ile mesafe arasındaki ilişki incelenmiştir. Ayrıca, öğrencilerin demografik, sosyal, ekonomik karakteristikleri ve üniversiteye giriş sınavındaki başarı puanları da cinsiyet ve mesafe ile ilgili olarak incelenmiştir. Öğrencilerin yaşadıkları yerler ile üniversiteler arasındaki mesafe kadın öğrenciler için ortalama 443,89 km, erkek öğrenciler için 512,81 km olarak gözlenmiştir. En küçük kareler yöntemiyle yapılan analize göre de erkek öğrenciler, kadın öğrencilere göre daha uzak mesafelerdeki üniversitelerde okumaktadırlar. Ayrıca, tanımlayıcı istatistiklere de bakıldığında, öğrenciler hakkındaki tüm sosyal-demografik gruplarda erkek öğrenciler kadın öğrencilere göre daha uzak mesafeleri katetmektedirler.

Third parties during interviews albeit a common occurrence, it is not widely studied. Literature in this topic is limited and mostly old. As a primary requirement, interviewers are asked to ensure privacy during the interviews. This may not be achieved in some situations and may lead to other people listening in the interview or actively participate in it and this may led to social desirable responding. Using the 2013 Turkish Demography and Health Survey data (TDHS -2013), this study explored factors that predisposes a third party person to be present, effects of their presence and if the type of third party presence elicit different effects. The focus of the TDHS -2013 were women of reproductive age, a total of 9,746 were interviewed. The interviewers were required to mark all the type of third party that were present at the end of the interview, the assumption is that the presence of a third party person was throughout the interview. In modelling the effects, variables selected were assumed to be sensitive or elicit social desirable responding. Descriptive statistics and logistic regressions from the complex sample menu were used for analysis after the necessary recording of variables were done. Findings indicated that marital status and cohabitation duration was significant determinant of third party presence, shorter cohabitation duration increased the odds of having children, respondent’s mother and mother-in-law present. Number of rooms and interview duration increased the odds of having a third party present. The impact of third party presence on selected variables was observed, some variables were affected by third party presence and the direction depended on the type of third party person. The findings reinforces the prerequisite of privacy to be ensured before interviews are conducted and recommends interviewers to be trained on effect of third party presence. Key words: third part presence, socially desirable, sensitive. ÖZET Görüşmelerde üçüncü kişilerin bulunması yaygın bir durum olmasına karşın fazla araştırılan bir konu değildir. Bu konudaki literatür kısıtlıdır ve genellikle eski tarihlidir. Görüşmeciler öncelikli olarak görüşmeler sırasında gizliliği sağlamakla yükümlüdürler. Bu durum her zaman mümkün olmayabilir ve başka kişilerin görüşmeyi dinlemesi, etkin olarak görüşmeye katılması söz konusu olabilir, bu gibi durumlar cevaplayıcının sosyal istenirlik etkilerine maruz kalmalarına yol açabilir. Bu çalışma, üçüncü bir kişinin varlığını etkileyen faktörleri ve bu kişilerin varlığının etkilerini 2013 Türkiye Nüfus ve Sağlık Araştırması’nı (TNSA-2013) kullanarak keşfetmektedir. TNSA-2013’ün odağında üreme çağındaki kadınlar bulunmaktadır ve 9,746 kadın ile görüşülmüştür. TNSA-2013 görüşmecilerinin görüşme sonunda görüşme sırasında orada bulunan tüm üçüncü kişileri işaretlemesi beklenmiştir. Bu soruya dayanan bu çalışmada bu kişilerin görüşme boyunca orada olduğu varsayılmıştır. Üçüncü kişilerin yanıtlara etkisinin modellenmesinde değişkenler üçüncü bir kişinin varlığından etkilenebilecek hassas veya sosyal istenirliğe maruz kalabilecek sorular olarak seçilmiştir. Değişkenlerin hazırlanmasından sonra karmaşık örneklemler için betimleyici istatistikler ve lojistik regresyon analizi yapılmıştır. Üçüncü bir kişinin olmasının belirleyicileri büyük ölçüde daha önce yapılmış çalışmalarla benzerlik göstermiştir. Bulgular evlilik durumu ve süresinin üçüncü bir kişinin varlığının anlamlı belirleyicileri olduğunu göstermiş; daha kısa süredir evli olan kişilerin görüşmelerinde çocukların, cevaplayıcının annesinin veya eşinin annesinin bulunmasına dair odds oranları artmıştır. Konuttaki oda sayısı ve görüşme süresi de aynı yönde etki yapmıştır. Seçilmiş bazı değişkenlerde üçüncü kişilerin etkileri gözlenmiştir ve bu etki üçüncü kişinin niteliğine göre farklı yönlerde olmuştur. Bulgular görüşme öncesinde gizliliğin sağlanmasının önemini vurgulamış ve görüşmeci eğitiminde bu konunun öne çıkarılmasının altını çizmiştir. Mixed methods came to light as the third methodological movement besides the quantitative and qualitative methods. It has been significantly popular for researchers, particularly in the last twenty years. However, its philosophy and applicability have been the major site of discussions. Motivated by these debates, the purpose of this thesis is to evaluate mixed methods studies in Turkey. How mixed methods is perceived and applied to be the guiding research question, 30 master’s degree theses of 2017 in the fields of education and sociology from Turkish universities are examined with content analysis. Council of Higher Education Thesis Center Database is the medium for reaching the theses and several keywords are used to screen the mixed methods studies. This thesis is designed according to the qualitative methodology and it holds the interpretive approach. In addition, content analysis is employed with seven categories for examining the theses. The rationale, definition and naming, model and design, sampling, data collection/generation, data analysis and ethics are the categories for the evaluation. This study argues that the theses, mostly, can be categorized as extended quantitative inquiries in which the researchers do not have a methodological approach for the qualitative side, rather the qualitative techniques serve for extension of the quantitative research. Furthermore, it is asserted that the theses reflect the messiness of mixed methods with the terminological unclarity, diversity and issues related to the rigor Karma yöntem, nicel ve nitel yöntemlerin yanında üçüncü yöntembilim hareketi olarak ortaya çıkmıştır. Araştırmacılar için özellikle son yirmi yılda önemli ölçüde popular hale gelmiştir. Ancak karma yöntemin felsefesi ve uygulanabilirliği tartışmaların en önemli konuları olarak öne çıkmaktadır. Bu tartışmalardan hareketle, bu çalışma Türkiye’deki karma yöntem araştırmalarını değerlendirmeyi amaçlamaktadır. Türk üniversitelerinde, 2017 yılında eğitim ve sosyoloji alanında yazılmış 30 yüksek lisans tezi, karma yöntemin nasıl algılandığı ve uygulandığı sorusu temelinde içerik analiziyle incelenmiştir. YÖK Tez Merkezi Veri Tabanı kullanılarak çeşitli anahtar kelimelerle yapılan aramalarla bu tezlere ulaşılmıştır. Bu tez nitel metodolojiye göre tasarlanmış olup yorumlayıcı yaklaşıma sahiptir. Buna ilavaten, tezleri incelemek için içerik analizi uygulanmış olup yedi kategori oluşturulmuştur. Gerekçe, tanımlama ve isimlendirme, model ve desen, örneklem, veri toplama, veri analizi ve etik değerlendirme kategorileri olarak çalışmada yer almaktadır. Bu çalışma, çoğu tezin nitel yöntemi metodolojik olarak ele almadığını, nitel tekniklerin nicel araştırmanın uzantısı olarak rol aldığını ve bu sebeple tezlerin çoğunun genişletilmiş nicel araştırma olarak kategorize edilebileceğini savunmaktadır. Ayrıca karma yöntemin bu tezlerde, terminolojik muğlaklık, çeşitlilik ve titizlikle ilgili hususlardan ötürü bir karmaşa içerisinde olduğu ortaya konmaktadır.

Recently, while being few in numbers, there have been studies focusing on survey quality and discussing sources of survey errors. Studies in the literature have emphasized on relatively controllable sampling errors, instead of non-sampling errors, which are costly to determine and difficult to control. This thesis aims to reveal profiles of data collection staff candidates involved in 2013 Turkey Demographic and Health Survey (TDHS-2013) recruitment process. This process consisted of different stages, in which the candidates filled in various forms. In order to reach the aim of this study, a special data set named “TDHS-2013 Data Collection Staff data” (hereafter, “staff data set”) was constructed using these forms. Descriptive analyses are carried out using nationally representative household and women data sets from the TDHS-2013 along with the staff data set. Moreover, pre and post processes of the fieldwork are compared by means of certain information obtained from recruitment forms. Furthermore, effects of interviewer characteristics on both number of completed interviews and interviewer performance are considered. Additionally, results of interviews, response rates and completion rates, along with sample provinces and assignments of the staff, are evaluated on the basis of data collection staff for household interviews and women interviews. Results indicate that information on the candidates should be gathered fully and kept updated to carry out further analyses in detail. The constructed staff data set let us examine the profiles of all applicants for the TDHS-2013 fieldwork, and evaluate the relation between interviewer characteristics and their performances. However, the constructed staff data set with the available information of interviewers was not suitable to make assessments regarding the attitudes, behaviors, and expectations of interviewers. Additionally, calculated calendar ratios on displacement of child birth dates imply that there is a potential interview bias on child birth date information. We expect this study will be a starting point for further studies analyzing interviewer profile, and investigating for a relation between data collection staff and survey estimates. Literatürdeki çalışmalar, belirlenmesi ve kontrol edilmesi zor ve maliyetli olan örneklem dışı hatalar yerine görece kontrol edilebilir olan örneklem hataları üzerinde durulmuştur. Bu tezde, 2013 Nüfus ve Sağlık Araştırması (2013 TNSA) işe alım sürecine dahil olan saha personeli adaylarının profili ortaya çıkarılmaya çalışılmıştır. İşe alım süreci, saha personeli adaylarının çeşitli formlar doldurduğu adımlardan oluşmaktadır. Amaca yönelik olarak bu formlar yardımıyla “2013 TNSA Saha Personeli Veri Seti” oluşturulmuştur. Bu veri seti ile ulusal düzeyde temsiliyeti olan hanehalkı ve kadın veri setleri kullanılarak betimleyici analizler yapılmıştır. Personel veri seti, 2013-TNSA saha çalışması için başvuran adayların profilini ve görüşmeci özellikleri ile performansları arasındaki ilişkiyi değerlendirmeye imkan tanımıştır. Ancak, personel veri seti görüşmecilerin tutum, davranış ve beklentilerini değerlendirmeye yönelik bilgiler içermemektedir. Ayrıca doğum tarihi değişimine dayanarak hesaplanan takvim oranları, çocukların doğum tarihi bilgisi üzerinde görüşmeci yanlılığı olabileceğini göstermektedir. Bu çalışmanın görüşmeci profilini analiz etme ve saha personelinin özellikleri ile araştırma sonuçları arasında bağ kurabilme konularında sonraki çalışmalar için kaynak oluşturması beklenmektedir.
