This article looks at the disadvantage of paper-based loyalty card programs in the U.S. According to Anne Christenson of Cold Stone Creamery, the company canceled its loyalty program because they were hearing from franchisees that way too many cards were being redeemed. Noting that a plastic card is far harder to reproduce than anything made of paper, Michael Zanoni of American Banknote Corp. claims that even a scratch-off PIN number or magnetic stripe will eliminate everyday fraudsters.
