A recent study conducted at Sheba Medical Center in Ramat Gan, Israel, examined the impact of radiation treatment on pituitary height in pediatric patients with brain tumors. The researchers found that radiation treatment was a significant predictor of decreased pituitary height at all observed time points. Additionally, chemotherapy or radiotherapy history and pituitary height at 10 years were predictors of endocrine deficiencies. The study suggests that surveillance imaging of pediatric brain tumor survivors should include evaluation of the pituitary gland, and if it is small for age, clinical endocrine evaluation should be pursued.
