The article draws several explanations regarding the significant change made by Marko Marulić in his literary version of the Book of Judith wherein Hecuba cut the nose of the Thracian king Polymnestor who killed her son Polydorus. It cites various assumptions as to what moved Marulić to alter the original story including his literary creativity and the influences of the oppressive environment from which he lived. The article infers that Marulić wanted to show nose slitting as a matter of hilarity and punishment for treachery.
