Wofa Yaw struggled beneath an armful of boxes as he pushed open the door of the Botanical Station post office in the Bronx, its peeling brown facade covered in graffiti. Mr. Yaw, a Ghanaian immigrant and the owner of an African and Caribbean grocery, was sending packages to homesick customers in Salem, N.Y., where the contents of the latest shipment are hard to find: dried fish, fufu powder, hot peppers. Minutes later, Sabrina Kolenovic's two sons spilled out of her black sport utility vehicle and toted to the postal counter a stack of boxes filled with prom dresses. Ms. Kolenovic, who sells prom gowns online, visits the post office every two days to ship dresses all over the world. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
