The paper is devoted to investigations carried out in the recent years at the Department of Physiology of industrial Microorganisms. The basic trends and results of investigation are presented concerning the systematic position and biological activity of industrially important strains of lactic acid and bifido-bacteria, search and selection of yeast--producers of biologically active substances, effect of ionizing electromagnetic radiation of radio-frequency range on yeast viability, their sorptional activity. Surface biopolymers ofcorinebacteria cells, their ability to destruct mineral motor oils have been studied; preparations based on actinobacteria for bioremediation of oil pollutions have been developed; interaction of microorganisms with inorganic xenobiotics--oxygen-containing anions and heavy metals have been investigated. The author also presents data on the study of action mechanism of extracellular sialospecific lectins of saprophytic bacilli, their antiviral activity on the models of influenza, herpes, hepatitis C, and HIV-infection, as well the processes of shaping regulation in a number of micromycetes. Data are available concerning the maintenance of the collection cultures of yeast, lactic acid and corinebacteria, microorganisms which have been preserved in the depositary.

50 years have passed from time of publication of the first number of "Fiziologichnyi Zhurnal", that is the scientific-theoretical edition of a National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and O.O. Bogomolets Institute of Physiology. "Fiziologichnyi Zhurnal" is a leading Ukrainian academical periodical edition, informing scientific community about a condition of physiology and pathophysiology, state-of-the-practice in physiology. In different years the journal was headed by the outstanding scientists--physiologists academicians G.V. Folbort, A.F. Makarchenko, F.N. Serkov. Now the editor-in-chief of "Fiziologichnyi Zhurnal" is corresponding member NAS of Ukraine V.F. Sagach.

The brief history of creation and basic stages of development of the largest centre of science of the country and global physiological science--A.A. Bogomolets Institute of physiology of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine is stated. The basic achievements of scientific divisions of Institute for the 70-year's period in area of the most urgent problems of molecular physiology, neurophysiology, physiology of visceral systems are marked. Is covered many-sided and versatile scientific and publishing activity of the employees of Institute, the role of the outstanding scientists--physiologists and biophysicists of Institute in formation of national scientific schools is shown.

The paper devoted to the 120th anniversary of A.A. Bogomoletz birth deals with the developmental stages of the cytotoxin (xenogenic antibody) doctrine from creating the anti-reticular cytotoxic serum (ACS) of Bogomoletz to the use of monoclonal antibodies both in biological investigations and in medicine. The use of ACS for treating various diseases and the mechanisms of its effect; obtaining other anti-organ and anti-tissue cytotoxic sera and establishing their experimental effects; the use of a set of cytotoxic sera, taken in both inhibitory and stimulating doses, in medicine and agriculture, as well as the drawbacks of cytotoxic sere (polyclonal xenogenic antibodies) are described. The experience of using monoclonal antibodies to identify the structures of protein antigenic determinants and to establish their role in different diseases are analysed. The use of monoclonal antibodies for treating various diseases is reviewed. The advances in the techniques of obtaining monoclonal antibodies are noted.
