Functional nanomaterials with enzyme-mimicking activities, termed as nanozymes, have found wide applications in various fields. However, the deviation between the working and optimal pHs of nanozymes has been limiting their practical applications. Here we develop a strategy to modulate the microenvironmental pHs of metal-organic framework (MOF) nanozymes by confining polyacids or polybases (serving as Brønsted acids or bases). The confinement of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) into the channels of peroxidase-mimicking PCN-222-Fe (PCN = porous coordination network) nanozyme lowers its microenvironmental pH, enabling it to perform its best activity at pH 7.4 and to solve pH mismatch in cascade systems coupled with acid-denatured oxidases. Experimental investigations and molecular dynamics simulations reveal that PAA not only donates protons but also holds protons through the salt bridges between hydroniums and deprotonated carboxyl groups in neutral pH condition. Therefore, the confinement of poly(ethylene imine) increases the microenvironmental pH, leading to the enhanced hydrolase-mimicking activity of MOF nanozymes. Selective molecular recognition is an important alternative to the energy-intensive industrial separation process. Porous coordination polymers (PCPs) offer designing platforms for gas separation because they possess precise controllability over structures at the molecular level. However, PCPs-based gas separations are dominantly achieved using strong adsorptive sites for thermodynamic recognition or pore-aperture control for size sieving, which suffer from insufficient selectivity or sluggish kinetics. Developing PCPs that work at high temperatures and feature both high uptake capacity and selectivity is urgently required but remains challenging. Herein, we report diffusion-rate sieving of propylene/propane (C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 ) at 300 K by constructing a PCP material whose global and local dynamics cooperatively govern the adsorption process via the mechanisms of the gate opening for C 3 H 6 and the diffusion regulation for C 3 H 8 , respectively, yielding substantial differences in both uptake capacity and adsorption kinetics. Over the long history of evolution, nature has developed a variety of biological systems with switchable recognition functions, such as the ion transmissibility of biological membranes, which can switch their ion selectivities in response to diverse stimuli. However, developing a method in an artificial host-guest system for switchable recognition of specific guests upon the change of external stimuli is a fundamental challenge in chemistry because the order in the host-guest affinity of a given system hardly varies along with environmental conditions. Herein, we report temperature-responsive recognition of two similar gaseous guests, CO 2 and C 2 H 2 , with selectivities switched by temperature change by a diffusion-regulatory mechanism, which is realized by a dynamic porous crystal featuring ultrasmall pore apertures with flip-flop locally-motive organic moiety. The dynamic local motion regulates the diffusion process of CO 2 and C 2 H 2 and amplifies their rate differences, allowing the crystal to selectively adsorb CO 2 at low temperatures and C 2 H 2 at high temperatures with separation factors of 498 (CO 2 /C 2 H 2 ) and 181 (C 2 H 2 /CO 2 ), respectively., (© 2024. Developing artificial porous systems with high molecular recognition performance is critical but very challenging to achieve selective uptake of a particular component from a mixture of many similar species, regardless of the size and affinity of these competing species. A porous platform that integrates multiple recognition mechanisms working cooperatively for highly efficient guest identification is desired. Here, we designed a flexible porous coordination polymer (PCP) and realised a corrugated channel system that cooperatively responds to only target gas molecules by taking advantage of its stereochemical shape, location of binding sites, and structural softness. The binding sites and structural deformation act synergistically, exhibiting exclusive discrimination gating (EDG) effect for selective gate-opening adsorption of CO 2 over nine similar gas molecules, including N 2 , CH 4 , CO, O 2 , H 2 , Ar, C 2 H 6 , and even higher-affinity gases such as C 2 H 2 and C 2 H 4 . Combining in-situ crystallographic experiments with theoretical studies, it is clear that this unparalleled ability to decipher the CO 2 molecule is achieved through the coordination of framework dynamics, guest diffusion, and interaction energetics. Furthermore, the gas co-adsorption and breakthrough separation performance render the obtained PCP an efficient adsorbent for CO 2 capture from various gas mixtures., (© 2023. The Author(s).)

Flexible metal-organic materials that exhibit stimulus-responsive switching between closed (non-porous) and open (porous) structures induced by gas molecules are of potential utility in gas storage and separation. Such behaviour is currently limited to a few dozen physisorbents that typically switch through a breathing mechanism requiring structural contortions. Here we show a clathrate (non-porous) coordination network that undergoes gas-induced switching between multiple non-porous phases through transient porosity, which involves the diffusion of guests between discrete voids through intra-network distortions. This material is synthesized as a clathrate phase with solvent-filled cavities; evacuation affords a single-crystal to single-crystal transformation to a phase with smaller cavities. At 298 K, carbon dioxide, acetylene, ethylene and ethane induce reversible switching between guest-free and gas-loaded clathrate phases. For carbon dioxide and acetylene at cryogenic temperatures, phases showing progressively higher loadings were observed and characterized using in situ X-ray diffraction, and the mechanism of diffusion was computationally elucidated., (© 2023. The safe storage of flammable gases, such as acetylene, is essential for current industrial purposes. However, the narrow pressure (P) and temperature range required for the industrial use of pure acetylene (100 < P < 200 kPa at 298 K) and its explosive behaviour at higher pressures make its storage and release challenging. Flexible metal-organic frameworks that exhibit a gated adsorption/desorption behaviour-in which guest uptake and release occur above threshold pressures, usually accompanied by framework deformations-have shown promise as storage adsorbents. Herein, the pressures for gas uptake and release of a series of zinc-based mixed-ligand catenated metal-organic frameworks were controlled by decorating its ligands with two different functional groups and changing their ratio. This affects the deformation energy of the framework, which in turn controls the gated behaviour. The materials offer good performances for acetylene storage with a usable capacity of ~90 v/v (77% of the overall amount) at 298 K and under a practical pressure range (100-150 kPa)., (© 2022. Kondo lattice materials, where localized magnetic moments couple to itinerant electrons, provide a very rich backdrop for strong electron correlations. They are known to realize many exotic phenomena, with a dramatic example being recent observations of quantum oscillations and metallic thermal conduction in insulators, implying the emergence of enigmatic charge-neutral fermions. Here, we show that thermal conductivity and specific heat measurements in insulating YbIr 3 Si 7 reveal emergent neutral excitations, whose properties are sensitively changed by a field-driven transition between two antiferromagnetic phases. In the low-field phase, a significant violation of the Wiedemann-Franz law demonstrates that YbIr 3 Si 7 is a charge insulator but a thermal metal. In the high-field phase, thermal conductivity exhibits a sharp drop below 300 mK, indicating a transition from a thermal metal into an insulator/semimetal driven by the magnetic transition. These results suggest that spin degrees of freedom directly couple to the neutral fermions, whose emergent Fermi surface undergoes a field-driven instability at low temperatures., (© 2022. Perovskite oxides can host various anion-vacancy orders, which greatly change their properties, but the order pattern is still difficult to manipulate. Separately, lattice strain between thin film oxides and a substrate induces improved functions and novel states of matter, while little attention has been paid to changes in chemical composition. Here we combine these two aspects to achieve strain-induced creation and switching of anion-vacancy patterns in perovskite films. Epitaxial SrVO 3 films are topochemically converted to anion-deficient oxynitrides by ammonia treatment, where the direction or periodicity of defect planes is altered depending on the substrate employed, unlike the known change in crystal orientation. First-principles calculations verified its biaxial strain effect. Like oxide heterostructures, the oxynitride has a superlattice of insulating and metallic blocks. Given the abundance of perovskite families, this study provides new opportunities to design superlattices by chemically modifying simple perovskite oxides with tunable anion-vacancy patterns through epitaxial lattice strain.

Direct structural information of confined CO 2 in a micropore is important for elucidating its specific binding or activation mechanism. However, weak gas-binding ability and/or poor sample crystallinity after guest exchange hindered the development of efficient materials for CO 2 incorporation, activation and conversion. Here, we present a dynamic porous coordination polymer (PCP) material with local flexibility, in which the propeller-like ligands rotate to permit CO 2 trapping. This process can be characterized by X-ray structural analysis. Owing to its high affinity towards CO 2 and the confinement effect, the PCP exhibits high catalytic activity, rapid transformation dynamics, even high size selectivity to different substrates. Together with an excellent stability with turnover numbers (TON) of up to 39,000 per Zn 1.5 cluster of catalyst after 10 cycles for CO 2 cycloaddition to form value-added cyclic carbonates, these results demonstrate that such distinctive structure is responsible for visual CO 2 capture and size-selective conversion.

The ability of porous coordination polymers to undergo reversible structural transformations in response to the presence of guest molecules has been intensively investigated for applications such as molecular separation, storage, sensing and signalling processes. Here we report on the direct observation of the highly guest-responsive nature of the surface of a single-crystalline porous coordination polymer, which consists of paddlewheel zinc clusters and two types of ligand, by in situ liquid-phase atomic force microscopy. Observations were carried out in solution at constant temperature (28 °C) by high-speed atomic force microscopy with lattice resolution. A sharp and reversible response to the presence or absence of biphenyl guest molecules was observed, under conditions that can scarcely induce the transformation of the bulk crystal. Additionally, by modulating the surface coordination equilibrium, layer-by-layer delamination events were captured in real time at every ~13 s per frame.

Gas-sensing materials are becoming increasingly important in our society, requiring high sensitivity to differentiate similar gases like N 2 and O 2 . For the design of such materials, the driving force of electronic host-guest interaction or host-framework changes during the sorption process has commonly been considered necessary; however, this work demonstrates the use of the magnetic characteristics intrinsic to the guest molecules for distinguishing between diamagnetic N 2 and CO 2 gases from paramagnetic O 2 gas. While the uptake of N 2 and CO 2 leads to an increase in T C through ferrimagnetic behavior, the uptake of O 2 results in an O 2 pressure-dependent continuous phase change from a ferrimagnet to an antiferromagnet, eventually leading to a novel ferrimagnet with aligned O 2 spins following application of a magnetic field. This chameleonic material, the first with switchable magnetism that can discriminate between similarly sized N 2 and O 2 gases, provides wide scope for new gas-responsive porous magnets.

Designed porosity in coordination materials often relies on highly ordered crystalline networks, which provide stability upon solvent removal. However, the requirement for crystallinity often impedes control of higher degrees of morphological versatility, or materials processing. Herein, we describe a supramolecular approach to the synthesis of amorphous polymer materials with controlled microporosity. The strategy entails the use of robust metal-organic polyhedra (MOPs) as porous monomers in the supramolecular polymerization reaction. Detailed analysis of the reaction mechanism of the MOPs with imidazole-based linkers revealed the polymerization to consist of three separate stages: nucleation, elongation, and cross-linking. By controlling the self-assembly pathways, we successfully tuned the resulting macroscopic form of the polymers, from spherical colloidal particles to colloidal gels with hierarchical porosity. The resulting materials display distinct microporous properties arising from the internal cavity of the MOPs. This synthetic approach could lead to the fabrication of soft, flexible materials with permanent porosity.

Porous titanium oxide materials are attractive for energy-related applications. However, many suffer from poor stability and crystallinity. Here we present a robust nanoporous metal-organic framework (MOF), comprising a Ti 12 O 15 oxocluster and a tetracarboxylate ligand, achieved through a scalable synthesis. This material undergoes an unusual irreversible thermally induced phase transformation that generates a highly crystalline porous product with an infinite inorganic moiety of a very high condensation degree. Preliminary photophysical experiments indicate that the product after phase transformation exhibits photoconductive behavior, highlighting the impact of inorganic unit dimensionality on the alteration of physical properties. Introduction of a conductive polymer into its pores leads to a significant increase of the charge separation lifetime under irradiation. Additionally, the inorganic unit of this Ti-MOF can be easily modified via doping with other metal elements. The combined advantages of this compound make it a promising functional scaffold for practical applications.

The design of monomer sequences in polymers has been a challenging research subject, especially in making vinyl copolymers by free-radical polymerization. Here, we report a strategy to obtain sequence-regulated vinyl copolymers, utilizing the periodic structure of a porous coordination polymer (PCP) as a template. Mixing of Cu 2+ ion and styrene-3,5-dicarboxylic acid (S) produces a PCP, [Cu(styrene-3,5-dicarboxylate)] n , with the styryl groups periodically immobilized along the one-dimensional channels. After the introduction of acrylonitrile (A) into the host PCP, radical copolymerization between A and the immobilized S is performed inside the channel, followed by decomposing the PCP to isolate the resulting copolymer. The predominant repetitive SAAA sequence in the copolymer is confirmed by monomer composition, NMR spectroscopy and theoretical calculations. Copolymerization using methyl vinyl ketone also provides the same type of sequence-regulated copolymer, showing that this methodology has a versatility to control the copolymer sequence via transcription of PCP periodicity at the molecular level.

Photochromic molecules have shown much promise as molecular components of stimuli-responsive materials, but despite recent achievements in various photoresponsive materials, quantitative conversion in photochemical reactions in solids is hampered by the lack of intrinsic structural flexibility available to release stress and strain upon photochemical events. This issue remains one of the challenges in developing solid-state photoresponsive materials. Here, we report a strategy to realize photoresponsive crystalline materials showing quantitative reversible photochemical reactions upon ultraviolet and visible light irradiation by introducing structural flexibility into crystalline porous frameworks with a twofold interpenetration composed of a diarylethene-based ligand. The structural flexibility of the porous framework enables highly efficient photochemical electrocyclization in a single-crystal-to-single-crystal manner. CO 2 sorption on the porous crystal at 195 K is reversibly modulated by light irradiation, and coincident X-ray powder diffraction/sorption measurements clearly demonstrate the flexible nature of the twofold interpenetrated frameworks.Organizing photochromic molecules into 3D networks is a key strategy to access photoresponsive materials, but framework rigidity typically limits conversion efficiency. Here, the authors exploit a flexible metal-organic framework to achieve quantitative and reversible photoisomerization in a porous crystalline solid.

The establishment of methodologies for the mixing of immiscible substances is highly desirable to facilitate the development of fundamental science and materials technology. Herein we describe a new protocol for the compatibilization of immiscible polymers at the molecular level using porous coordination polymers (PCPs) as removable templates. In this process, the typical immiscible polymer pair of polystyrene (PSt) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) was prepared via the successive homopolymerizations of their monomers in a PCP to distribute the polymers inside the PCP particles. Subsequent dissolution of the PCP frameworks in a chelator solution affords a PSt/PMMA blend that is homogeneous in the range of several nanometers. Due to the unusual compatibilization, the thermal properties of the polymer blend are remarkably improved compared with the conventional solvent-cast blend. This method is also applicable to the compatibilization of PSt and polyacrylonitrile, which have very different solubility parameters.

The design of inexpensive and less toxic porous coordination polymers (PCPs) that show selective adsorption or high adsorption capacity is a critical issue in research on applicable porous materials. Although use of Group II magnesium(II) and calcium(II) ions as building blocks could provide cheaper materials and lead to enhanced biocompatibility, examples of magnesium(II) and calcium(II) PCPs are extremely limited compared with commonly used transition metal ones, because neutral bridging ligands have not been available for magnesium(II) and calcium(II) ions. Here we report a rationally designed neutral and charge-polarized bridging ligand as a new partner for magnesium(II) and calcium(II) ions. The three-dimensional magnesium(II) and calcium(II) PCPs synthesized using such a neutral ligand are stable and show selective adsorption and separation of carbon dioxide over methane at ambient temperature. This synthetic approach allows the structural diversification of Group II magnesium(II) and calcium(II) PCPs.

Chain alignment can significantly influence the macroscopic properties of a polymeric material, but no general and versatile methodology has yet been reported to obtain highly ordered crystalline packing of polymer chains, with high stability. Here, we disclose a strategy that relies on 'ordered crosslinks' to produce polymeric materials that exhibit a crystalline arrangement. Divinyl crosslinkers (2,5-divinyl-terephthalate) were first embedded, as substitutional ligands, into the structure of a porous coordination polymer (PCP), [Cu(terephthalate)triethylenediamine0.5]n. A representative vinyl monomer, styrene, was subsequently polymerized inside the channels of the host PCP. The polystyrene chains that form within the PCP channels also crosslink with the divinyl species. This bridges together the polymer chains of adjacent channels and ensures that, on selective removal of the PCP, the polymer chains remain aligned. Indeed, the resulting material exhibits long-range order and is stable to thermal and solvent treatments, as demonstrated by X-ray powder diffraction and transmission electron microscopy.

Functional cellular substrates for localized cell stimulation by small molecules provide an opportunity to control and monitor cell signalling networks chemically in time and space. However, despite improvements in the controlled delivery of bioactive compounds, the precise localization of gaseous biomolecules at the single-cell level remains challenging. Here we target nitric oxide, a crucial signalling molecule with site-specific and concentration-dependent activities, and we report a synthetic strategy for developing spatiotemporally controllable nitric oxide-releasing platforms based on photoactive porous coordination polymers. By organizing molecules with poor reactivity into polymer structures, we observe increased photoreactivity and adjustable release using light irradiation. We embed photoactive polymer crystals in a biocompatible matrix and achieve precisely controlled nitric oxide delivery at the cellular level via localized two-photon laser activation. The biological relevance of the exogenous nitric oxide produced by this strategy is evidenced by an intracellular change in calcium concentration, mediated by nitric oxide-responsive plasma membrane channel proteins.

Peptide uptake systems that involve members of the proton-coupled oligopeptide transporter (POT) family are conserved across all organisms. POT proteins have characteristic substrate multispecificity, with which one transporter can recognize as many as 8,400 types of di/tripeptides and certain peptide-like drugs. Here we characterize the substrate multispecificity of Ptr2p, a major peptide transporter of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, using a dipeptide library. The affinities (Ki) of di/tripeptides toward Ptr2p show a wide distribution range from 48 mM to 0.020 mM. This substrate multispecificity indicates that POT family members have an important role in the preferential uptake of vital amino acids. In addition, we successfully establish high performance ligand affinity prediction models (97% accuracy) using our comprehensive dipeptide screening data in conjunction with simple property indices for describing ligand molecules. Our results provide an important clue to the development of highly absorbable peptides and their derivatives including peptide-like drugs.

A variety of microsystems have been developed that harness energy and convert it to mechanical motion. Here we have developed new autonomous biochemical motors by integrating a metal-organic framework (MOF) and self-assembling peptides. The MOF is applied as an energy-storing cell that assembles peptides inside nanoscale pores of the coordination framework. The nature of peptides enables their assemblies to be reconfigured at the water/MOF interface, and thus converted to fuel energy. Reorganization of hydrophobic peptides can create a large surface-tension gradient around the MOF that can efficiently power its translational motion. As a comparison, the velocity normalized by volume for the diphenylalanine-MOF particle is faster and the kinetic energy per unit mass of fuel is more than twice as great as that for previous gel motor systems. This demonstration opens the route towards new applications of MOFs and reconfigurable molecular self-assembly, possibly evolving into a smart autonomous motor capable of mimicking swimming bacteria and, with integrated recognition units, harvesting target chemicals.

The spatial organization of porous coordination polymer (PCP) crystals into higher-order structures is critical for their integration into separation systems, heterogeneous catalysts, ion/electron transport and photonic devices. Here, we demonstrate a rapid method to spatially control the nucleation site, leading to the formation of mesoscopic architecture made of PCPs, in both two and three dimensions. Inspired by geological processes, this method relies on the morphological replacement of a shaped sacrificial metal oxide used both as a metal source and as an 'architecture-directing agent' by an analogous PCP architecture. Spatiotemporal harmonization of the metal oxide dissolution and the PCP crystallization allowed the preservation of very fine mineral morphological details of periodic alumina inverse opal structures. The replication of randomly structured alumina aerogels resulted in a PCP architecture with hierarchical porosity in which the hydrophobic micropores of the PCP and the mesopores/macropores inherited from the parent aerogels synergistically enhanced the material's selectivity and mass transfer for water/ethanol separation.

The development of a new methodology for visualizing and detecting gases is imperative for various applications. Here, we report a novel strategy in which gas molecules are detected by signals from a reporter guest that can read out a host structural transformation. A composite between a flexible porous coordination polymer and fluorescent reporter distyrylbenzene (DSB) selectively adsorbed CO₂ over other atmospheric gases. This adsorption induced a host transformation, which was accompanied by conformational variations of the included DSB. This read-out process resulted in a critical change in DSB fluorescence at a specific threshold pressure. The composite shows different fluorescence responses to CO₂ and acetylene, compounds that have similar physicochemical properties. Our system showed, for the first time, that fluorescent molecules can detect gases without any chemical interaction or energy transfer. The host-guest coupled transformations play a pivotal role in converting the gas adsorption events into detectable output signals.

Chemosensors detect a single target molecule from among several molecules, but cannot differentiate targets from one another. In this study, we report a molecular decoding strategy in which a single host domain accommodates a class of molecules and distinguishes between them with a corresponding readout. We synthesized the decoding host by embedding naphthalenediimide into the scaffold of an entangled porous framework that exhibited structural dynamics due to the dislocation of two chemically non-interconnected frameworks. An intense turn-on emission was observed on incorporation of a class of aromatic compounds, and the resulting luminescent colour was dependent on the chemical substituent of the aromatic guest. This unprecedented chemoresponsive, multicolour luminescence originates from an enhanced naphthalenediimide-aromatic guest interaction because of the induced-fit structural transformation of the entangled framework. We demonstrate that the cooperative structural transition in mesoscopic crystal domains results in a nonlinear sensor response to the guest concentration.

The thermal transitions of confined polymers are important for the application of polymers in molecular scale devices and advanced nanotechnology. However, thermal transitions of ultrathin polymer assemblies confined in subnanometre spaces are poorly understood. In this study, we show that incorporation of polyethylene glycol (PEG) into nanochannels of porous coordination polymers (PCPs) enabled observation of thermal transitions of the chain assemblies by differential scanning calorimetry. The pore size and surface functionality of PCPs can be tailored to study the transition behaviour of confined polymers. The transition temperature of PEG in PCPs was determined by manipulating the pore size and the pore-polymer interactions. It is also striking that the transition temperature of the confined PEG decreased as the molecular weight of PEG increased.

Porous coordination polymers are materials formed from metal ions that are bridged together by organic linkers and that can combine two seemingly contradictory properties-crystallinity and flexibility. Porous coordination polymers can therefore create highly regular yet dynamic nanoporous domains that are particularly promising for sorption applications. Here, we describe the effective selective sorption of dioxygen and nitric oxide by a structurally and electronically dynamic porous coordination polymer built from zinc centres and tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) as a linker. In contrast to a variety of other gas molecules (C(2)H(2), Ar, CO(2), N(2) and CO), O(2) and NO are accommodated in its pores. This unprecedented preference arises from the concerted effect of the charge-transfer interaction between TCNQ and these guests, and the switchable gate opening and closing of the pores of the framework. This system provides further insight into the efficient recognition of small gas molecules.

Porous compounds are ubiquitous and indispensable in daily life as adsorbents and catalysts. The discovery of a new porous compound with unique properties based on intrinsic nanosized space and surface functionalities is scientifically and technologically important. However, the functional species used in this context are limited to those that are sufficiently inert to not spoil the porous structures. Here, we show a new strategy to achieve a crystalline porous material with the pore surface regularly decorated with highly reactive 'bare' nitrenes that are photonically generated from stable 'dormant' precursors at will. The bare triplet nitrenes were accessible to and reacted with adsorbed oxygen or carbon monoxide molecules, which showed not only activation of the pore surface, but also a high probability of chemical trapping and conversion of guest molecules by light stimulation on demand.

Porous coordination polymers, in particular flexible porous coordination polymer networks that change their network structure on guest adsorption, have enormous potential in applications involving selective storage, separation and sensing. Despite the expected significant differences in their adsorption properties, porous coordination polymer nanocrystals remain largely unexplored, and there have been no reports about studies on flexible porous coordination polymer nanocrystals, mainly due to a lack of preparation methods. Here, we present a new technique for the rapid preparation of porous coordination polymer nanocrystals that combines non-aqueous inverse microemulsion with ultrasonication. Uniform nanocrystals of {[Zn(ip)(bpy)]}(n) (ip = isophthalate, bpy = 4,4'-bipyridyl; CID-1), a flexible porous coordination polymer, have been prepared by this method and analysed using field-emission scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and X-ray powder diffraction. A model for particle formation and growth is presented and discussed. Adsorption experiments with methanol show that the overall adsorption capacities of nanoparticles and bulk are almost identical, but the shapes of the sorption isotherms differ significantly and the adsorption kinetics increase dramatically.

The field of host-guest complexation is intensely attractive from diverse perspectives, including materials science, chemistry and biology. The uptake and encapsulation of guest species by host frameworks are being investigated for a wide variety of purposes, including separation and storage using zeolites, and recognition and sensing by enzymes in solution. Here we focus on the concept of the cooperative integration of 'softness' and 'regularity'. Recent developments on porous coordination polymers (or metal-organic frameworks) have provided the inherent properties that combine these features. Such soft porous crystals exhibit dynamic frameworks that are able to respond to external stimuli such as light, electric fields or the presence of particular species, but they are also crystalline and can change their channels reversibly while retaining high regularity. We discuss the relationship between the structures and properties of these materials in view of their practical applications.

The development of anhydrous proton-conductive materials operating at temperatures above 80 degrees C is a challenge that needs to be met for practical applications. Herein, we propose the new idea of encapsulation of a proton-carrier molecule--imidazole in this work--in aluminium porous coordination polymers for the creation of a hybridized proton conductor under anhydrous conditions. Tuning of the host-guest interaction can generate a good proton-conducting path at temperatures above 100 degrees C. The dynamics of the adsorbed imidazole strongly affect the conductivity determined by (2)H solid-state NMR. Isotope measurements of conductivity using imidazole-d4 showed that the proton-hopping mechanism was dominant for the conducting path. This work suggests that the combination of guest molecules and a variety of microporous frameworks would afford highly mobile proton carriers in solids and gives an idea for designing a new type of proton conductor, particularly for high-temperature and anhydrous conditions.

Introducing a functional part into open-framework materials that tunes the pore size/shape and overall porous activity will open new routes in framework engineering and in the fabrication of new materials. We have designed and synthesized a bimodal microporous twofold interpenetrating network {[Ni(bpe)2(N(CN)2)](N(CN)2)(5H2O)}n (1), with two types of channel for anionic N(CN)2- (dicyanamide) and neutral water molecules, respectively. The dehydrated framework provides a dual function of specific anion exchange of free N(CN)2- for the smaller N3- anions and selective gas sorption. The N3-exchanged framework leads to a dislocation of the mutual positions of the two interpenetrating frameworks, resulting in an increase in the effective pore size in one of the counterparts of the channels and a higher accommodation of adsorbate than in the as-synthesized framework (1), showing the first case of controlled sorption properties in flexible porous frameworks.
