Nearly two hundred common-variant depression risk loci have been identified by genome-wide association studies (GWAS). However, the impact of rare coding variants on depression remains poorly understood. Here, we present whole-exome sequencing analyses of depression with seven different definitions based on survey, questionnaire, and electronic health records in 320,356 UK Biobank participants. We showed that the burden of rare damaging coding variants in loss-of-function intolerant genes is significantly associated with risk of depression with various definitions. We compared the rare and common genetic architecture across depression definitions by genetic correlation and showed different genetic relationships between definitions across common and rare variants. In addition, we demonstrated that the effects of rare damaging coding variant burden and polygenic risk score on depression risk are additive. The gene set burden analyses revealed overlapping rare genetic variant components with developmental disorder, autism, and schizophrenia. Our study provides insights into the contribution of rare coding variants, separately and in conjunction with common variants, on depression with various definitions and their genetic relationships with neurodevelopmental disorders., (© 2024. Layered thio- and seleno-phosphate ferroelectrics, such as CuInP 2 S 6 , are promising building blocks for next-generation nonvolatile memory devices. However, because of the low Curie point, the CuInP 2 S 6 -based memory devices suffer from poor thermal stability (<42 °C). Here, exploiting the electric field-driven phase transition in the rarely studied antiferroelectric CuCrP 2 S 6 crystals, we develop a nonvolatile memristor showing a sizable resistive-switching ratio of ~ 1000, high switching endurance up to 20,000 cycles, low cycle-to-cycle variation, and robust thermal stability up to 120 °C. The resistive switching is attributed to the ferroelectric polarization-modulated thermal emission accompanied by the Fowler-Nordheim tunneling across the interfaces. First-principles calculations reveal that the good device performances are associated with the exceptionally strong ferroelectric polarization in CuCrP 2 S 6 crystal. Furthermore, the typical biological synaptic learning rules, such as long-term potentiation/depression and spike amplitude/spike time-dependent plasticity, are also demonstrated. Stacking engineering in van der Waals (vdW) materials is a powerful method to control topological electronic phases for quantum device applications. Atomic intercalation into the vdW material can modulate the stacking structure at the atomic scale without a highly technical protocol. Here we report that lithium intercalation in a topologically structured graphene/buffer system on SiC(0001) drives dynamic topological domain wall (TDW) motions associated with stacking order change by using an in situ aberration-corrected low-energy electron microscope in combination with theoretical modelling. We observe sequential and selective lithium intercalation that starts at topological crossing points (AA stacking) and then selectively extends to AB stacking domains. Lithium intercalation locally changes the domain stacking order to AA and in turn alters the neighbouring TDW stacking orders, and continuous intercalation drives the evolution of the whole topological structure network. Our work reveals moving TDWs protected by the topology of stacking and lays the foundation for controlling the stacking structure via atomic intercalation. Controllable fabrication of angstrom-size channels has been long desired to mimic biological ion channels for the fundamental study of ion transport. Here we report a strategy for fabricating angstrom-scale ion channels with one-dimensional (1D) to three-dimensional (3D) pore structures by the growth of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) into nanochannels. The 1D MIL-53 channels of flexible pore sizes around 5.2 × 8.9 Å can transport cations rapidly, with one to two orders of magnitude higher conductivities and mobilities than MOF channels of hybrid pore configurations and sizes, including Al-TCPP with 1D ~8 Å channels connected by 2D ~6 Å interlayers, and 3D UiO-66 channels of ~6 Å windows and 9 - 12 Å cavities. Furthermore, the 3D MOF channels exhibit better ion sieving properties than those of 1D and 2D MOF channels. Theoretical simulations reveal that ion transport through 2D and 3D MOF channels should undergo multiple dehydration-rehydration processes, resulting in higher energy barriers than pure 1D channels. These findings offer a platform for studying ion transport properties at angstrom-scale confinement and provide guidelines for improving the efficiency of ionic separations and nanofluidics., (© 2023. Although two-dimensional (2D) materials have grown into an extended family that accommodates hundreds of members and have demonstrated promising advantages in many fields, their practical applications are still hindered by the lack of scalable high-yield production of monolayer products. Here, we show that scalable production of monolayer nanosheets can be achieved by a facile ball-milling exfoliation method with the assistance of viscous polyethyleneimine (PEI) liquid. As a demonstration, graphite is effectively exfoliated into graphene nanosheets, achieving a high monolayer percentage of 97.9% at a yield of 78.3%. The universality of this technique is also proven by successfully exfoliating other types of representative layered materials with different structures, such as carbon nitride, covalent organic framework, zeolitic imidazolate framework and hexagonal boron nitride. This scalable exfoliation technique for monolayer nanosheets could catalyze the synthesis and industrialization of 2D nanosheet materials., (© 2023. The Author(s).)

Zinc is an essential cofactor for bacterial metabolism, and many Enterobacteriaceae express the zinc transporters ZnuABC and ZupT to acquire this metal in the host. However, the probiotic bacterium Escherichia coli Nissle 1917 (or "Nissle") exhibits appreciable growth in zinc-limited media even when these transporters are deleted. Here, we show that Nissle utilizes the siderophore yersiniabactin as a zincophore, enabling Nissle to grow in zinc-limited media, to tolerate calprotectin-mediated zinc sequestration, and to thrive in the inflamed gut. We also show that yersiniabactin's affinity for iron or zinc changes in a pH-dependent manner, with increased relative zinc binding as the pH increases. Thus, our results indicate that siderophore metal affinity can be influenced by the local environment and reveal a mechanism of zinc acquisition available to commensal and pathogenic Enterobacteriaceae., (© 2021. Complex traits are characterized by multiple genes and variants acting simultaneously on a phenotype. However, studying the contribution of individual pairs of genes to complex traits has been challenging since human genetics necessitates very large population sizes, while findings from model systems do not always translate to humans. Here, we combine genetics with combinatorial RNAi (coRNAi) to systematically test for pairwise additive effects (AEs) and genetic interactions (GIs) between 30 lipid genome-wide association studies (GWAS) genes. Gene-based burden tests from 240,970 exomes show that in carriers with truncating mutations in both, APOB and either PCSK9 or LPL ("human double knock-outs") plasma lipid levels change additively. Genetics and coRNAi identify overlapping AEs for 12 additional gene pairs. Overlapping GIs are observed for TOMM40/APOE with SORT1 and NCAN. Our study identifies distinct gene pairs that modulate plasma and cellular lipid levels primarily via AEs and nominates putative drug target pairs for improved lipid-lowering combination therapies., (© 2021. Graphene-based nanoporous materials have been extensively explored as high-capacity ion electrosorption electrodes for supercapacitors. However, little attention has been paid to exploiting the interactions between electrons that reside in the graphene lattice and the ions adsorbed between the individual graphene sheets. Here we report that the electronic conductance of a multilayered reduced graphene oxide membrane, when used as a supercapacitor electrode, can be modulated by the ionic charging state of the membrane, which gives rise to a collective electrolyte gating effect. This gating effect provides an in-operando approach for probing the charging dynamics of supercapacitors electrically. Using this approach, we observed a pore-size-dependent ionic hysteresis or memory effect in reduced graphene oxide membranes when the interlayer distance is comparable to the ion diameter. Our results may stimulate the design of novel devices based on the ion-electron interactions under nanoconfinement.

Biological ion channels have remarkable ion selectivity, permeability and rectification properties, but it is challenging to develop artificial analogues. Here, we report a metal-organic framework-based subnanochannel (MOFSNC) with heterogeneous structure and surface chemistry to achieve these properties. The asymmetrically structured MOFSNC can rapidly conduct K + , Na + and Li + in the subnanometre-to-nanometre channel direction, with conductivities up to three orders of magnitude higher than those of Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ , equivalent to a mono/divalent ion selectivity of 10 3 . Moreover, by varying the pH from 3 to 8 the ion selectivity can be tuned further by a factor of 10 2 to 10 4 . Theoretical simulations indicate that ion-carboxyl interactions substantially reduce the energy barrier for monovalent cations to pass through the MOFSNC, and thus lead to ultrahigh ion selectivity. These findings suggest ways to develop ion selective devices for efficient ion separation, energy reservation and power generation.

Biological fluoride ion channels are sub-1-nanometer protein pores with ultrahigh F - conductivity and selectivity over other halogen ions. Developing synthetic F - channels with biological-level selectivity is highly desirable for ion separations such as water defluoridation, but it remains a great challenge. Here we report synthetic F - channels fabricated from zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), UiO-66-X (X = H, NH 2 , and N + (CH 3 ) 3 ). These MOFs are comprised of nanometer-sized cavities connected by sub-1-nanometer-sized windows and have specific F - binding sites along the channels, sharing some features of biological F - channels. UiO-66-X channels consistently show ultrahigh F - conductivity up to ~10 S m -1 , and ultrahigh F - /Cl - selectivity, from ~13 to ~240. Molecular dynamics simulations reveal that the ultrahigh F - conductivity and selectivity can be ascribed mainly to the high F - concentration in the UiO-66 channels, arising from specific interactions between F - ions and F - binding sites in the MOF channels.

Ion transport in nanoconfinement differs from that in bulk and has been extensively researched across scientific and engineering disciplines 1-4 . For many energy and water applications of nanoporous materials, concentration-driven ion diffusion is simultaneously subjected to a local electric field arising from surface charge or an externally applied potential. Due to the uniquely crowded intermolecular forces under severe nanoconfinement (<2 nm), the transport behaviours of ions can be influenced by the interfacial electrical double layer (EDL) induced by a surface potential, with complex implications, engendering unusual ion dynamics 5-7 . However, it remains an experimental challenge to investigate how such a surface potential and its coupling with nanoconfinement manipulate ion diffusion. Here, we exploit the tunable nanoconfinement in layered graphene-based nanoporous membranes to show that sub-2 nm confined ion diffusion can be strongly modulated by the surface potential-induced EDL. Depending on the potential sign, the combination and concentration of ion pairs, diffusion rates can be reversibly modulated and anomalously enhanced by 4~7 times within 0.5 volts, across a salt concentration gradient up to seawater salinity. Modelling suggests that this anomalously enhanced diffusion is related to the strong ion-ion correlations under severe nanoconfinement, and cannot be explained by conventional theoretical predictions.

The oxygen evolution reaction involves complex interplay among electrolyte, solid catalyst, and gas-phase and liquid-phase reactants and products. Monitoring catalysis interfaces between catalyst and electrolyte can provide valuable insights into catalytic ability. But it is a challenging task due to the additive solid supports in traditional measurement. Here we design a nanodevice platform and combine on-chip electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurement, temporary I-V measurement of an individual nanosheet, and molecular dynamic calculations to provide a direct way for nanoscale catalytic diagnosis. By removing O 2 in electrolyte, a dramatic decrease in Tafel slope of over 20% and early onset potential of 1.344 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode are achieved. Our studies reveal that O 2 reduces hydroxyl ion density at catalyst interface, resulting in poor kinetics and negative catalytic performance. The obtained in-depth understanding could provide valuable clues for catalysis system design. Our method could also be useful to analyze other catalytic processes.Electrocatalysis offers important opportunities for clean fuel production, but uncovering the chemistry at the electrode surface remains a challenge. Here, the authors exploit a single-nanosheet electrode to perform in-situ measurements of water oxidation electrocatalysis and reveal a crucial interaction with oxygen.

While it has long been known that some highly adsorbing microporous materials suddenly become inaccessible to guest molecules below certain temperatures, previous attempts to explain this phenomenon have failed. Here we show that this anomalous sorption behaviour is a temperature-regulated guest admission process, where the pore-keeping group's thermal fluctuations are influenced by interactions with guest molecules. A physical model is presented to explain the atomic-level chemistry and structure of these thermally regulated micropores, which is crucial to systematic engineering of new functional materials such as tunable molecular sieves, gated membranes and controlled-release nanocontainers. The model was validated experimentally with H 2 , N 2 , Ar and CH 4 on three classes of microporous materials: trapdoor zeolites, supramolecular host calixarenes and metal-organic frameworks. We demonstrate how temperature can be exploited to achieve appreciable hydrogen and methane storage in such materials without sustained pressure. These findings also open new avenues for gas sensing and isotope separation.

Driven by the increasing demand for micro-/nano-technologies, stimuli-responsive shape memory materials at nanoscale have recently attracted great research interests. However, by reducing the size of conventional shape memory materials down to approximately nanometre range, the shape memory effect diminishes. Here, using density functional theory calculations, we report the discovery of a shape memory effect in a two-dimensional atomically thin graphene oxide crystal with ordered epoxy groups, namely C8O. A maximum recoverable strain of 14.5% is achieved as a result of reversible phase transition between two intrinsically stable phases. Our calculations conclude co-existence of the two stable phases in a coherent crystal lattice, giving rise to the possibility of constructing multiple temporary shapes in a single material, thus, enabling highly desirable programmability. With an atomic thickness, excellent shape memory mechanical properties and electric field stimulus, the discovery of a two-dimensional shape memory graphene oxide opens a path for the development of exceptional micro-/nano-electromechanical devices.

The emergence of the field of nanofluidics in the last decade has led to the development of important applications including water desalination, ultrafiltration and osmotic energy conversion. Most applications make use of carbon nanotubes, boron nitride nanotubes, graphene and graphene oxide. In particular, understanding water transport in carbon nanotubes is key for designing ultrafiltration devices and energy-efficient water filters. However, although theoretical studies based on molecular dynamics simulations have revealed many mechanistic features of water transport at the molecular level, further advances in this direction are limited by the fact that the lowest flow velocities accessible by simulations are orders of magnitude higher than those measured experimentally. Here, we extend molecular dynamics studies of water transport through carbon nanotubes to flow velocities comparable with experimental ones using massive crowd-sourced computing power. We observe previously undetected oscillations in the friction force between water and carbon nanotubes and show that these oscillations result from the coupling between confined water molecules and the longitudinal phonon modes of the nanotube. This coupling can enhance the diffusion of confined water by more than 300%. Our results may serve as a theoretical framework for the design of new devices for more efficient water filtration and osmotic energy conversion devices.

Many applications proposed for graphene require multiple sheets be assembled into a monolithic structure. The ability to maintain structural integrity upon large deformation is essential to ensure a macroscopic material which functions reliably. However, it has remained a great challenge to achieve high elasticity in three-dimensional graphene networks. Here we report that the marriage of graphene chemistry with ice physics can lead to the formation of ultralight and superelastic graphene-based cellular monoliths. Mimicking the hierarchical structure of natural cork, the resulting materials can sustain their structural integrity under a load of >50,000 times their own weight and can rapidly recover from >80% compression. The unique biomimetic hierarchical structure also provides this new class of elastomers with exceptionally high energy absorption capability and good electrical conductivity. The successful synthesis of such fascinating materials paves the way to explore the application of graphene in a self-supporting, structurally adaptive and 3D macroscopic form.
