Abstract We present a new database, EutherianCoP, of fossil mammals which lived globally from the Late Pleistocene to the Holocene. The database includes 13,972 fossil occurrences of 786 extant or recently extinct placental mammal species, plus 155,198 current occurrences for those of them which survived to the present. The occurrences are correlated with radiometric age information. For all species, we provide 32 different traits, inclusive of taxonomic, phenotypic, life history, biogeographic and phylogenetic information. Differently from any other compilation, the occurrences are complemented with estimates of past climatic conditions, including site-interpolated monthly and annual precipitation and temperature, leaf area index, megabiome type and net primary productivity, which are derived from transient paleo model simulations conducted with the Community Earth System Model 1.2 and the BIOME4 vegetation model. All data are further downloadable for further investigation.

Abstract Although intense research effort is seeking to address which brain areas fire and connect to each other to produce complex behaviors in a few living primates, little is known about their evolution, and which brain areas or facets of cognition were favored by natural selection. By developing statistical tools to study the evolution of the brain cortex at the fine scale, we found that rapid cortical expansion in the prefrontal region took place early on during the evolution of primates. In anthropoids, fast-expanding cortical areas extended to the posterior parietal cortex. In Homo, further expansion affected the medial temporal lobe and the posteroinferior region of the parietal lobe. Collectively, the fast-expanding cortical areas in anthropoids are known to form a brain network producing mind reading abilities and other higher-order cognitive functions. These results indicate that pursuing complex cognition drove the evolution of Primate brains.

Abstract The study of evolutionary rates and patterns is the key to understand how natural selection shaped the current and past diversity of phenotypes. Phylogenetic comparative methods offer an array of solutions to undertake this challenging task, and help understanding phenotypic variation in full in most circumstances. However, complex, three-dimensional structures such as the skull and the brain serve disparate goals, and different portions of these phenotypes often fulfil different functions, making it hard to understand which parts truly were recruited by natural selection. In the recent past, we developed tools apt to chart evolutionary rate and patterns directly on three-dimensional shapes, according to their magnitude and direction. Here, we present further developments of these tools, which now allow to restitute the mapping of rates and patterns with full biological realism. The tools are condensed in a new R software package.

Abstract The global biodiversity crisis is generated by the combined effects of human-induced climate change and land conversion. Madagascar is one of the World’s most renewed hotspots of biodiversity. Yet, its rich variety of plant and animal species is threatened by deforestation and climate change. Predicting the future of Madagascar’s chameleons, in particular, is complicated by their ecological rarity, making it hard to tell which factor is the most menacing to their survival. By applying an extension of the ENphylo species distribution model algorithm to work with extremely rare species, we find that Madagascar chameleons will face intense species loss in the north-western sector of the island. Land conversion by humans will drive most of the loss, and will intersect in a complex, nonlinear manner with climate change. We find that some 30% of the Madagascar’s chameleons may lose in the future nearly all their habitats, critically jeopardizing their chance for survival.
