Abstract To assess the efficacy, safety, and stability of refractive outcomes in hyperopic Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK) with and without the application of Mitomycin C (MMC). This randomized, parallel group, controlled multicenter trial included 140 hyperopic eyes. The participants were randomly assigned to two groups: one receiving LASIK with mitomycin C (MMC) (n = 70) and the other receiving LASIK without MMC (n = 70). The primary outcome measures were uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), and safety parameters at six months postoperatively. The statistical analysis employed t-tests, Mann-Whitney tests, and Fisher’s Exact Test, with a significance level of p 0.05). Both groups demonstrated highly effective and safe refractive outcomes. No intraoperative complications or postoperative adverse events were observed. Age and preoperative spherical equivalent did not significantly affect outcomes. Hyperopic LASIK with and without MMC showed comparable efficacy, safety, and stability of refractive outcomes at the six-month postoperative interval. Although MMC use in hyperopic LASIK appears to be a safe procedure, it was not found to be significantly superior to conventional LASIK. Further investigation with longer follow-up periods and larger cohorts is necessary to confirm these results.

Abstract The purpose of this retrospective pseudonymised data analysis was to determine whether the patient’s age has an influence on the safety, efficacy, and prediction accuracy of laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) treatment of myopic and hyperopic eyes. This study was performed at CARE Vision GmbH (Düsseldorf, Germany) and included two patient cohorts: an older group with patients > 55 years old and a younger group with patients 30–40 years old. Each patient had a single LASIK treatment. The safety, efficacy, and prediction accuracy of the refractive results were analysed. In total, 682 patients were analysed, with 341 patients in each patient group (one eye per patient). There were 570 myopic eyes and 112 hyperopic eyes. In myopic eyes, the efficacy was significantly influenced by the patient’s age but only in myopic eyes (myopic: p ≤ 0.05; hyperopic: p = 0.085), while safety was not significantly influenced by the patient’s age in hyperopic or myopic eyes (p = 0.204). We found that LASIK treatment at an older age (> 55 years) resulted in almost the same safety outcomes as a LASIK treatment at a younger age (30–40 years) but with a lower efficacy; the efficacy correlated with the patient’s age. If the patient was hyperopic, their age did not influence safety or efficacy.

Abstract This cross-sectional study compared the retinal morphology between patients with progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) and healthy controls. (The retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) around the optic disc and the retina in the macular area of 22 PSP patients and 151 controls were investigated by spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). Additionally, the RNFL and the nerve fiber index (NFI) were measured by scanning laser polarimetry (SLP). Results of RNFL measurements with SD-OCT and SLP were compared to assess diagnostic discriminatory power. Applying OCT, PSP patients showed a smaller RNFL thickness in the inferior nasal and inferior temporal areas. The macular volume and the thickness of the majority of macular sectors were reduced compared to controls. SLP data showed a thinner RNFL thickness and an increase in the NFI in PSP patients. Sensitivity and specificity to discriminate PSP patients from controls were higher applying SLP than SD-OCT. Retinal changes did not correlate with disease duration or severity in any OCT or SLP measurement. PSP seems to be associated with reduced thickness and volume of the macula and reduction of the RNFL, independent of disease duration or severity. Retinal imaging with SD-OCT and SLP might become an additional tool in PSP diagnosis.
