The article criticizes the depiction of the U.S. as an evil force during the Cold War by the "New York Times" and other groups that share its political perspectives. The allegation against the conduct of the U.S. during the period is based on the findings of the Historical Clarification Commission of Guatemala. The aim of the commission is to investigate the extent of human rights violations and why they happened in the country. However, high level of human rights abuses in the country can be traced back not from the presence of the U.S. in the country but its absence.
