The National Energy Code of Canada for Buildings (NECB) 2020, developed by the Canadian Commission on Building and Fire Codes with the support of Natural Resources Canada, and published by the National Research Council of Canada, sets out technical requirements for the energy-efficient design and construction of new buildings and additions. Several technical changes have been incorporated in this new edition, improving the level of energy efficiency provided by the Code and expanding compliance options. Significant changes in the NECB 2020 • The application of the Code is extended to cover alterations, such as tenant improvements, to buildings originally constructed in accordance with the NECB. • Maximum overall thermal transmittance values for opaque building assemblies and fenestration are reduced to improve the thermal performance of the building envelope. • Whole-building airtightness testing is introduced as an option for complying with air leakage requirements. • Lighting power densities are updated to reflect improvements in the efficacy of lighting products. • Performance requirements for heating, ventilating and air-conditioning (HVAC) and service water heating equipment are updated to align them with relevant standards and regulations. • The trade-off compliance paths for HVAC and service water systems, which were complex and not widely used, are removed. • A new compliance path with 4 energy performance tiers is introduced to provide a framework for achieving higher levels of energy efficiency in buildings., First printing., On inside cover: First Edition 1997. The National Energy Code of Canada for Buildings 2017 (NECB), published by NRC and developed by the Canadian Commission on Building and Fire Codes in collaboration with Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), sets out technical requirements for the energy efficient design and construction of new buildings. NRC and NRCan are publishing this interim edition of the NECB in response to proposals received that improve the overall energy performance of buildings over the 2015 edition. Modelling for these changes indicates a potential energy efficiency improvement of between 10.3 and 14.4 % over the NECB 2011. The 2017 edition is an important step toward Canada’s goal for new buildings, as presented in the Pan-Canadian Framework, of achieving ‘Net Zero Energy Ready (NZER)’ buildings by 2030. The NECB 2017 supports this goal by reducing the overall thermal transmittance of roofs, fenestration and doors; reducing losses through thermal bridging in building assemblies; and, reducing the allowable percentage of skylight area. This new edition also introduces more stringent requirements for energy recovery systems and interior and exterior lighting requirements. It requires temperature controls in individual guest rooms in hotels and motels and demand control ventilation systems in commercial kitchens. In Part 4, it clarifies the lighting trade-off path requirements and in Part 8, it makes performance compliance requirements consistent with prescriptive requirements. The National Energy Code of Canada for Buildings 2015, together with the National Building Code of Canada 2015, the National Plumbing Code of Canada 2015 and the National Fire Code of Canada 2015, is an objective-based National Model Code that can be adopted by provincial and territorial governments. Codes Canada are developed by the Canadian Commission on Building and Fire Codes (CCBFC). In Canada, provincial and territorial governments have the authority to enact legislation that regulates building design and construction within their jurisdictions. This legislation may include the adoption of the National Energy Code for Buildings (NECB) without change or with modifications to suit local needs, and the enactment of other laws and regulations regarding building design and construction, including the requirements for professional involvement. The NECB is a model code in the sense that it helps promote consistency among provincial and territorial building codes. Persons involved in the design or construction of a building should consult the provincial or territorial government concerned to find out which construction requirements are applicable. This edition of the NECB succeeds the 2011 edition. The development of the NECB 2015 has been a collaborative effort involving the National Research Council of Canada (NRC), Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) and other stakeholders. NRCan’s financial and technical contributions will improve the energy efficiency of new buildings and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The National Energy Code of Canada for Buildings 2011 (NECB) provides minimum requirements for the design and construction of energy-efficient buildings and covers the building envelope, systems and equipment for heating, ventilating and air-conditioning, service water heating, lighting, and the provision of electrical power systems and motors. It applies to new buildings and additions. These tables give the solar data needed for designing an air conditioning system by either the traditional hand- calculating procedures or digital computer techniques. They have been prepared in exactly the same way as the tables in the ASHRAE Handbook of Fundamentals (1967), but are for the latitudes of particular relevance in Canada and for small enough increments of latitude that interpolation is unnecessary. The data are in the engineering units commonly used in North America (Btu/ft[2]hr); and in the International System (watt/metre[2]), which is coming into use throughout the world.
