The article looks at the use of solitary confinement, or the Special Housing Unit (SHU), by prisons in New York state. It discusses the state and federal policy changes that increased SHU use in New York, which it notes has a high rate of solitary confinement relative to other U.S. states. It notes that solitary confinement is frequently imposed for nonviolent, trivial prisoner offenses. It discusses whether solitary confinement is a form of torture and describes the detrimental psychological effects of the prolonged sensory deprivation and solitude involved.
