This article literally appraises the book "Modern French Philosophy," by J. Alexander Gunn. The author treats his subject by problems-Science, Freedom, Progress, Ethics, and Religion. The attitude of philosophers toward the first of these is supposed to determine their attitude toward the succeeding. By robbing science of its dogmatism the rights of man to freedom are held to be substantiated. But freedom demands that history be capricious and that conduct be guided by a well-wrought ethical theory--Gunu loquitur. But since ethics is restless without a foundation in religion, the problem of the universe as a stage for our acts is the final study of the book.

This article focuses on the book "Victor Hugo," by Madame Duelaux. The author says that it is hero-worship alone which makes author Victor Hugo great as Madame Duclaux presents him. From the point of view of literature, he was sometimes charming but more often sentimental, frequently large and powerful but seldom profound and stirring. The author says that, no one today, no one even among his later contemporaries, considered him seriously as an artist. One cannot fail to snicker at his copious floods of words, the Gothic exaggeration, the barbarous banging of rhymes, the grotesque mingling of the ugly and the beautiful, in almost everything he wrote.

This article presents information about the book "La Notion d'Espace," by D. Nys. Nys founds his doctrine on what he says is the one fact given in experience which makes concept of space concrete, namely, distance. Distance is always a relation between two physical objects, which may in certain eases be the walls of a single solid. In fact, this philosopher thinks of solids as swimming in a medium more or less dense. The relations between the medium and the solid constitute the external space of the object.

This article critically appraises the book "Le Stupicle XIX siécle," by Par Léon Daudet. The book is a summation in unmistakable language of a philosophy which is coming more and more into its own and which is seldom stated with such uncompromising clearness and frankness as here. It is the philosophy of Joseph de Maistre and the Vicomte de Bonald, now revived in France by the group of L'Action Francuaise. Such an extraordinary chronology is all the evidence one would need to know that Daudet is discussing philosophy, not history. For him as for his German counterpart, Hegel, there are such things as "ages," which embody, mysteriously enough, certain ideas. It is the idea embodied by the nineteenth century which Daudet is talking of: that idea is the democratic dogma.

The article presents information about various books written by Anatole France. The books are: "The Bride of Corinth," "Little Pierre" and "The Seven Wives of Bluebeard." Although these three books are not by any means the most interesting of France's work, they have a peculiar value for his admirers in that they include the earliest and the latest of his major writings. "Little Pierre," in which the zealous see a note reminiscent of the author's childhood, came out in France in 1918 and was a welcome antidote to the drugged literature then in the bookshops.
