An upper bound to the energy density of infrared background radiation is derived from considering the effect of gamma-gamma interactions on the observed TeV gamma-ray spectrum of the active galaxy Markarian 421. This upper bound proves to be the most restrictive for the wavelength range of 10-12 micrometers. These constraints are presently limited by the uncertainty of extrapolating the source spectrum from 5 to 500 GeV. Observations in the regime less than 100 GeV would significantly improve these limits, allowing for a wide range of IR production models to be constrained.

The steady TeV gamma-ray emission from the Crab Nebula has been used to optimize the sensitivity of the Whipple Observatory atmospheric Cerenkov imaging telescope. Using this method, which is of order 20 times more sensitive than the standard method using a simple non-imaging detector, it is possible to detect the Crab Nebula at a significance level in excess of 6 standard deviations (6 sigma) in under 1 hr on source (with a corresponding time observing a background comparison region); a source one-tenth the strength of the Crab Nebula can be detected at the 4 sigma level after 40 hr on the source (and 40 hr on a background region). A variety of sources have been monitored using this technique over the period 1988-1991, but none were detected apart from the Crab Nebula. Upper limits are presented which in many instances are a factor of 10 below the flux of the Crab Nebula. These upper limits assume steady emission from the source and cannot rule out sporadic gamma-ray emission with short duty cycles.

The detection of TeV energy photons from the giant elliptical galaxy Markarian 421 using the Whipple Observatory gamma-ray telescope is reported. The signal has a statistical significance of 6 sigma above background and the flux above 0.5 TeV is 0.3 of that from the Crab Nebula. The source location agrees with the position of Mk 421 within the angular uncertainty of the Whipple instrument.

The angular accuracy of gamma-ray detectors is intrinsically limited by the physical processes involved in photon detection. Although a number of point-like sources were detected by the COS-B satellite, only two were unambiguously identified by time signature with counterparts at longer wavelengths. By taking advantage of the extended longitudinal structure of Very High Energy gamma-ray showers, measurements in the TeV energy range can pinpoint source coordinates to arc minute accuracy. This was demonstrated using Cerenkov air shower imaging techniques. With two telescopes in coincidence, the individual event circular probable error will be 0.13 deg. The half-cone angle of the field of view is effectively 1 deg.

Recently the power of the Cerenkov imaging technique in Very High Energy gamma-ray astronomy was demonstrated by the detection of the Crab nebula at high statistical significance. In order to further develop this technique to allow the detection of weaker or more distant sources a second 10 m class reflector was constructed about 120 m from the original instrument. The addition of the second reflector will allow both a reduction in the energy threshold and an improvement in the rejection of the hadronic background. The design and construction of the second reflector, Gamma Ray Astrophysics New Imaging TElescope (GRANITE) is described.

Six years of observations of Hercules X-1 with the Whipple Observatory gamma-ray telescope have been subjected to a Fourier analysis to search for emission at the 0.8079 Hz neutron star frequency. Evidence for a signal is found at the 99.5 percent confidence level for data taken with the medium-resolution imaging camera with some indications of emission at frequencies blueshifted from the fundamental frequency. However, analysis of the high-resolution camera data base have failed to substantiate this effect. Selection of events on the basis of gamma-ray-like image parameters did not enhance the signal from the medium-resolution data nor produce any indication of a signal from the high-resolution data. The overall conclusion is that no statistically significant evidence for TeV gamma-ray emission was found in the Whipple Observatory data base when the 6 years of data are taken as a whole.

While previous studies of the X-ray binary 4U 0115+63 suggest it to be a steady, TeV gamma-ray emitter, with pulses at the 3.6-sec neutron-star period, the present analysis of data obtained on 60 nights over a 4-yr period with an imaging gamma-ray telescope has uncovered no indication of TeV signals. The derived upper limit of 1 x 10 to the -11th/sq-cm sec, for gamma-rays of energy above 0.7 TeV, is noted to be significantly below the previously reported fluxes.

Cygnus X-3 and some apparently related systems have sprung into remarkable prominence. The reasons for this great interest are summarized. Some recent developments in the picture of these sources are also outlined.

Cygnus X-3 appears to generate so much power in the form of charged particles of up to approx 10 to the 17th power eV that the galaxy may need approx 1 such source on average to maintain its flux of ultra high energy cosmic rays. Accreting gas must supply the energy, and in a surprisingly ordered form, if it is correct to use a Vest-rand-Eichler model for radiation of gammas, modified by the introduction of an accretion wake. Certain relationships between 10 to the 12th power eV and 10 to the 15th power gamma rays are expected.

If photon cascades develop by the usual mechanisms, there should indeed be notable differences between the structure of showers due to photon and hadron primaries, as regards muon densities and lateral distributions of some detector signals. The muon content of showers from Cygnus X-3, observed at Kiel, cannot be understood in this way. One remedy is to postulate arbitrarily a strong hadronic interaction of photons in the TeV region. This would utterly change the nature of electromagnetic cascades, but surprisingly does not at first sight seem to be in conflict with air shower observations.

It is shown that it should be possible to distinguish very effectively between background hadronic showers and TeV gamma ray showers from a point source on the basis of the width, length and orientation of the Cerenkov light images of the shower, seen in the focal plane of a focusing mirror, even with a relatively coarse pixel size such as employed in the Mt. Hopkins detector. Predictions of the response of this system to air showers are presented.

Turver and Weekes proposed using a system of phototubes in the focal plane of a large reflector to give an air Cherenkov camera for gamma ray astronomy. Preliminary results with a 19 element camera have been reported previously. In 1983 the camera was increased to 37 pixels; it has now been routinely operated for two years. A brief physical description of the camera, its mode of operation, and the data reduction procedures are presented. The Monte Carlo simultations on which these are based on also reviewed.
