This essay presents a look at women as drivers in commercials. She alludes to a previous essay regarding a commercial for a Mercury automobile in which a woman quits her job as a journalist in order to move to the country and write a novel. The author discusses the role of feminism in advertising, especially in relation to the selling of cars. She discusses the gender differences in popular culture's and mainstream society's perception of independence. She discusses the concept of women as "lady drivers" in the 1980s.
