Four yeast strains were isolated from rotting wood samples collected in the Baotianman Nature Reserve in Henan Province, Central China. On the basis of sequence analysis of the D1/D2 domains of the large subunit rRNA gene and the internal transcribed spacer regions, they were suggested to be two novel species of the genus Pichia. Pichia nanzhaoensis sp. nov. produces one to four spherical ascospores per ascus, and is most closely related to Candida pseudolambica. Pichia paraexigua f.a., sp. nov. is a sister taxa to Pichia exigua, but the formation of ascospores was not observed on various sporulation media. P. nanzhaoensis sp. nov. can weakly assimilate inulin, whereas P. paraexigua sp. nov. can weakly assimilate d-glucosamine. The type strain of Pichia nanzhaoensis is NYNU 178136T (=CICC 33279T=CBS 15346T) and the type strain of Pichia paraexigua is NYNU 178135T (=CICC 33278T=CBS 15237T).

Here, we describe three endosymbiotic bacterial strains isolated from the gills of the shipworm, Bankia setacea (Teredinidae: Bivalvia). These strains, designated as Bs08T, Bs12T and Bsc2T, are Gram-stain-negative, microaerobic, gammaproteobacteria that grow on cellulose and a variety of substrates derived from lignocellulose. Phenotypic characterization, phylogeny based on 16S rRNA gene and whole genome sequence data, amino acid identity and percentage of conserved proteins analyses, show that these strains are novel and may be assigned to the genus Teredinibacter . The three strains may be differentiated and distinguished from other previously described Teredinibacter species based on a combination of four characteristics: colony colour (Bs12T, purple; others beige to brown), marine salt requirement (Bs12T, Bsc2T and Teredinibacter turnerae strains), the capacity for nitrogen fixation (Bs08T and T. turnerae strains) and the ability to respire nitrate (Bs08T). Based on these findings, we propose the names Teredinibacter haidensis sp. nov. (type strain Bs08T=ATCC TSD-121T=KCTC 62964T), Teredinibacter purpureus sp. nov. (type strain Bs12T=ATCC TSD-122T=KCTC 62965T) and Teredinibacter franksiae sp. nov. (type strain Bsc2T=ATCC TSD-123T=KCTC 62966T).

Two isolates representing a new species of Scheffersomyces were isolated from rotting wood samples collected in an Amazonian forest ecosystem in Brazil. Analysis of the sequences of the D1/D2 domains showed that this new species is phylogenetically related to Scheffersomyces NYMU 15730, a species without a formal description, and the two are in an early emerging position with respect to the xylose-fermenting subclade containing Scheffersomyces titanus and Scheffersomyces stipitis. Phylogenomic analyses using 474 orthologous genes placed the new species in an intermediary position between Scheffersomyces species and the larger genus Spathaspora and the Candida albicans/Lodderomyces clade. The novel species, Scheffersomyces stambukii f.a., sp. nov., is proposed to accommodate these isolates. The type strain of Scheffersomyces stambukii sp. nov. is UFMG-CM-Y427T (=CBS 14217T). The MycoBank number is MB 824093. In addition, we studied the xylose metabolism of this new species.

Two yeast isolates producing asci-containing elongate ascospores with curved ends typical of the genus Spathaspora were isolated from rotting wood samples collected in an Atlantic rainforest ecosystem in Brazil. Phylogenetic analysis of the LSU rRNA gene D1/D2 domain sequences demonstrated that the strains represent a new species and placed it next to Candida blackwellae, in a clade that also contains Candida albicans and Candida dubliniensis. Other sequences of the ribosomal gene cluster supported same placementin the same clade, and a phylogenomic analysis placed this new species in an early emerging position relative to the larger C. albicans/Lodderomyces clade. One interpretation is that the genus Spathaspora is, in fact, paraphyletic. In conformity with this view, we propose the novel species Spathaspora boniae sp. nov. to accommodate the isolates. The type strain of Spathaspora boniae sp. nov. is UFMG-CM-Y306T (=CBS 13262T). The MycoBank number is MB 821297. A detailed analysis of xylose metabolism was conducted for the new species.

This study describes three novel xylose-assimilating yeasts, which were isolated from decayed wood collected from Bung Hatta Botanical Garden in West Sumatra and Cibodas Botanic Garden in West Java, or from litter from Eka Karya Bali Botanic Garden in Bali, Indonesia. Phylogenetic analysis was performed based on the sequences of the D1/D2 domains of the large ribosomal subunit (LSU), the small ribosomal subunit (SSU), the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and elongation factor-1α (EF-1α), and the three strains were found to represent three novel species belonging to genera Barnettozyma or Wickerhamomyces. The morphological, biochemical and physiological characteristics indicated that the strains were distinct from other closely related species. Strains 13Y206T and 14Y196T belonging to the Barnettozyma clade are described as the type strains of Barnettozyma xylosiphila sp. nov. (type strain 13Y206T=NBRC 110202T=InaCC Y726T; MycoBank MB808598) and Barnettozyma xylosica sp. nov. (type strain 14Y196T=NBRC 111558T=InaCC Y1030T; MycoBank MB819485). Strain 14Y125T belonging to the Wickerhamomyces clade is described as the type strain of Wickerhamomyces xylosivorus f.a., sp. nov. (type strain 14Y125T=NBRC 111553T=InaCC Y1026T; MycoBank MB819484).

Seven strains representing two novel yeast species were isolated from rotting wood in Henan and Yunnan Provinces, PR China. The results of phylogenetic analysis based on the D1/D2 domains of the large subunit (LSU) rRNA gene revealed that these two species are members of the genus Kodamaea, although the formation of ascospores was not observed. Kodamaea neixiangensis f.a., sp. nov. (type strain NYNU 167139T=CICC 33170T=CBS 14699T) formed a clade with Candida kaohsiungensis and Candida hsintzibuensis, from which it differed by 10-16 substitutions in the D1/D2 domain. The ITS sequences of K. neixiangensis sp. nov. differed by 27 substitutions from those of the type strain of C. kaohsiungensis. The most closely related species with a validly published name to Kodamaea jinghongensis f.a., sp. nov. (type strain NYNU 167162T=CICC 33171T=CBS 14700T) was Candida fukazawae, but this differed by 14 substitutions in the D1/D2 domain and by 15 substitutions in the ITS region.

An aerobic, Gram-negative, catalase-positive, oxidase-positive bacterium, designated strain YC6-17T, was isolated from pieces of wood collected at the bottom of Youngcheon Cave in Jeju, Republic of Korea. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain YC6-17T formed a tight cluster with Phreatobacter oligotrophus DSM 25521T (98.1 % sequence similarity) and was distinctly separate from other taxa of the order Rhizobiales . Cells were motile rods and showed growth at 10–30 °C, pH 6–8 and 2 % NaCl. Colonies were smooth, circular, convex and pale yellow in colour. The predominant ubiquinone was Q-10. The predominant fatty acids were C18 : 1ω7c, 11-methyl-C18 : 1ω7c, summed feature 3 and C16 : 0. The polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylcholine, two glycolipids and a lipid. The DNA G+C content was 64.4 mol%. DNA–DNA relatedness between strain YC6-17T and the closest relative was 15.6±7.9 %. Based on combined data from phenotypic characterization and DNA–DNA hybridization as well as phylogenetic analysis, it was suggested that the isolate represents a novel species of the genus Phreatobacter , for which the name Phreatobacter stygius sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is strain YC6-17T (=KCTC 52518T=DSM 103734T).

Two yeast strains, DMKU-WBBC14 and UFMG-CM-Y3283, were isolated from soil in Samutprakarn province in the central part of Thailand and from rotting wood in an Amazonian forest site in the Roraima State in Brazil, respectively. The two strains showed identical sequences of the D1/D2 domain of the large subunit (LSU) rRNA gene and different sequences by three nucleotide substitutions of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region. Therefore, these two strains represented a single species which was most closely related to Cyberlindnera mengyuniae CBS 10845T. The nucleotide sequence differences between the two strains of the novel species and the type strain Cyberlindnera mengyuniae CBS 10845T were 10 substitutions in the D1/D2 region of the LSU rRNA gene and 46 substitutions in the ITS region. DMKU-WBBC14 and UFMG-CM-Y3283 differed in growth temperature profiles. Moreover, they also exhibited different carbon assimilation profiles and growth temperature profiles from the type strain of Cyberlindnera mengyuniae, CBS 10845T. The name Cyberlindnera tropicalis f.a., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is DMKU-WBBC14T (=CBS 14558T=TBRC 6562T). The Mycobank number is MB 819722.

A polyphasic taxonomic approach was used to characterize a presumably novel bacterium, designated strain CC-YTH161T, isolated from an agarwood sample. Cells of strain CC-YTH161T were Gram-stain-positive aerobic rods, which grew at 20–40 °C, at pH 5.0–9.0 and with 0–5 % (w/v) NaCl. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain CC-YTH161T appeared to belong to the genus Humibacter , and was closely related to Humibacter antri D7-27T (96.6 % similarity) and Humibacter ginsengiterrae DCY60T (96.2 %). The DNA G+C content was 67.0 mol% and the predominant quinone system was menaquinones (MK) 11 and 12. The major cellular fatty acids of the isolate were C15 : 0, iso-C16 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 0 and C18 : 1ω7c/C18 : 1ω6c. The polar lipid profile comprised predominant amounts of diphosphatidylglycerol followed by two unidentified co-migrating glycolipids and phosphatidylglycerol in significant amounts. The diagnostic diamino acid was 2,4-diaminobutyric acid. All these features confirmed the placement of strain CC-YTH161T within the genus Humibacter . On the basis of evidence from this study, strain CC-YTH161T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Humibacter , for which the name Humibacter aquilariae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CC-YTH161T (=BCRC 80936T=JCM 31199T).

Seven yeast strains were isolated from the gut of insect larvae and decayed wood, which were collected from three localities near Nanyang, Henan Province, China. These strains were identified as two novel species through comparison of sequences in the D1/D2 domains of the large subunit (LSU) rRNA gene and other taxonomic characteristics. Pichia dushanensis sp. nov. was closely related to species in the Pichia clade and produced one to four spheroid ascospores in a deliquescent ascus. The D1/D2 sequence of P. dushanensis sp. nov. differed from its closest relative, Issatchenkia (Pichia) sp. NRRL Y-12824, by 3.6 % sequence divergence (16 substitutions and 4 gaps). The species also differed from its four closest known species, Candida rugopelliculosa, Pichia occidentalis, Pichia exigua and Candida phayaonensis, by 4.1–4.4 % sequence divergence (22–24 substitutions and 0–2 gaps) in the D1/D2 sequences. Hyphopichia paragotoi sp. nov. belonged to the Hyphopichia clade, and its nearest phylogenetic neighbours were Candida gotoi, Candida pseudorhagii, Candida rhagii and Hyphopichia heimii with 3.2–4.2 % sequence divergence (16–21substitutions and 1 gap) in the D1/D2 sequences. In comparison with previously established species, H. paragotoi sp. nov. formed one hat-shaped ascospore in a persistent ascus. The type strain of P. dushanensis sp. nov. is NYNU 14658T ( = CICC 33049T = CBS 13912T), and the type strain of H. paragotoi sp. nov. is NYNU 14666T ( = CICC 33048T = CBS 13913T).

Independent surveys of yeasts associated with lignocellulosic-related materials led to the discovery of a novel yeast species belonging to the Cyberlindnera clade (Saccharomycotina, Ascomycota). Analysis of the sequences of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region and the D1/D2 domains of the large subunit rRNA gene showed that this species is related to C. japonica, C. maesa and C. easanensis. Six isolates were obtained from different sources, including rotting wood, tree bark and sugar cane filter cake in Brazil, frass from white oak in the USA and decayed leaf in Taiwan. A novel species is suggested to accommodate these isolates, for which the name C. xylosilytica sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of C. xylosilytica sp. nov. is NRRL YB-2097T ( = CBS 13984T = UFMG-CM-Y347T) and the allotype is UFMG-CM-Y409 ( = CBS 14083). The novel species is heterothallic and complementary mating types are represented by the type and allotype strains. The MycoBank number is MB 811428.

Seven strains representing a novel yeast species belonging to the genus Kazachstania were found at several collection sites on both mainland Ecuador (Yasuní National Park) and the Galápagos (Santa Cruz Island). Two strains (CLQCA 20-132T and CLQCA 24SC-045) were isolated from rotten wood samples, two further strains (CLQCA 20-280 and CLQCA 20-348) were isolated from soil samples, and three strains (CLQCA 20-198, CLQCA 20-374 and CLQCA 20-431) were isolated from decaying fruits. Sequence analyses of the D1/D2 domains of the LSU rRNA gene and ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region indicated that the novel species is most closely related to Kazachstania servazzii and Kazachstania unispora. Although the strains could not be distinguished from one another based upon their differing geographical origins, they could be differentiated according to their isolation source (fruit, soil or wood) by ITS sequencing. The species name Kazachstania yasuniensis sp. nov. is proposed to accommodate these strains, with CLQCA 20-132T ( = CBS 13946T = NCYC 4008T) designated the type strain.

Fourteen isolates of an unknown species identified as belonging to the genus Legionella by selective growth on BCYE agar were isolated from the biopurification systems of three different wood processing plants. The mip gene sequence of all 14 isolates was identical and a close match alignment revealed 86 % sequence similarity with Legionella pneumophila serogroup 8. The whole genome of isolate LEGNT was sequenced, and a phylogenetic tree based on the alignment of 16S rRNA, mip, rpoB, rnpB and the 23S–5S intergenic region clustered LEGNT with L. pneumophila ATCC 33152T. Analysis of virulence factors showed that strain LEGNT carries the majority of known L. pneumophila virulence factors. An amoeba infection assay performed to assess the pathogenicity of strain LEGNT towards Acanthamoeba castellanii showed that it can establish a replication vacuole in A. castellanii but does not significantly affect replication of amoebae. Taken together, the results confirm that strain LEGNT represents a novel species of the genus Legionella , for which the name Legionella norrlandica sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is LEGNT ( = ATCC BAA-2678T = CCUG 65936T).

During a survey of yeasts associated with wood-ingesting insects, 69 strains in the Scheffersomyces clade and related taxa were isolated from passalid and tenebrionid beetles and the decayed wood inhabited by them. The majority of these yeasts was found to be capable of fermenting xylose, and was recognized as Scheffersomyces stipitis or its close relative Scheffersomyces illinoinensis, which are known to be associated with wood-decaying beetles and rotten wood. Yeasts in ‘Scheffersomyces’ ( = Candida) ergatensis and ‘Scheffersomyces’ ( = Candida) coipomoensis were also frequently isolated. The remaining six strains were identified as representing four novel species in the genera Scheffersomyces and Candida based on multilocus sequence analyses of nuclear rRNA genes and four protein-coding genes, as well as other taxonomic characteristics. Two xylose-fermenting species, Scheffersomyces parashehatae f.a., sp. nov. (type strain ATCC MYA-4653T = CBS 12535T = EH045T; MycoBank MB805440) and Scheffersomyces xylosifermentans f.a., sp. nov. (type strain ATCC MYA-4859T = CBS 12540T = MY10-052T; MycoBank MB805441), formed a clade with Scheffersomyces shehatae and related Scheffersomyces species. Interestingly, S. xylosifermentans can survive at 40 °C, which is a rare property among xylose-fermenting yeasts. Candida broadrunensis sp. nov. (type strain ATCC MYA-4650T = CBS 11838T = EH019T; MycoBank MB805442) is a sister taxon of C. ergatensis, while Candida manassasensis sp. nov. (type strain ATCC MYA-4652T = CBS 12534T = EH030T; MycoBank MB805443) is closely related to Candida palmioleophila in the Candida glaebosa clade. The multilocus DNA sequence comparisons in this study suggest that the genus Scheffersomyces needs to be circumscribed to the species near S. stipitis (type species) and S. shehatae that can be characterized by the ability to ferment xylose.

A Gram-stain-negative, non-flagellated, gliding, rod-shaped bacterial strain, designated WT-MY15T, was isolated from wood falls in the South Sea in Korea and subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic study. Strain WT-MY15T grew optimally at pH 7.0–8.0, at 25 °C and in the presence of 2.0 % (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain WT-MY15T clustered with the type strains of two Olleya species, exhibiting 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity values of 97.7–98.1 %. Strain WT-MY15T contained MK-6 as the predominant menaquinone. The fatty acid and polar lipid profiles of strain WT-MY15T were similar to those of Olleya aquimaris L-4T and Olleya marilimosa CIP 108537T. The DNA G+C content of strain WT-MY15T was 42.8 mol% and its mean DNA–DNA relatedness values with O. aquimaris L-4T and O. marilimosa CIP 108537T were 8.3 and 5.6 %, respectively. The phylogenetic and genetic distinctiveness and differential phenotypic properties revealed that strain WT-MY15T is separate from the two recognized species of the genus Olleya . On the basis of the data presented, strain WT-MY15T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Olleya , for which the name Olleya namhaensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is WT-MY15T ( = KCTC 23673T = CCUG 61507T). An emended description of the genus Olleya is also presented.

A Gram-negative, rod-shaped, pale-orange-pigmented bacterial strain with xylan-degrading activity designated YC7004T was isolated from a rotten-wood sample collected at Jinju, Korea, and its taxonomic position was investigated by using a polyphasic approach. The strain grew optimally on R2A medium at 30 °C and at pH 6. The major isoprenoid quinone was MK7 and major fatty acids were summed feature 3, iso-C15 : 0, C16 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH, iso-C17 : 1ω9c and C16 : 1ω5c. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 40.0 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the strain belongs to the genus Mucilaginibacter in the family Sphingobacteriaceae . The most closely related species were Mucilaginibacter daejeonensis (95.5 %), Mucilaginibacter frigoritolerans (94.6 %) and Mucilaginibacter mallensis (94.0 %). Based on the phylogenetic and chemotaxonomic data analyses, strain YC7004T represents a novel species of the genus Mucilaginibacter with the proposed name of Mucilaginibacter jinjuensis sp. nov. The type strain is YC7004T ( = KACC 16571T = NBRC 108856T).

A Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, non-motile and rod-shaped bacterial strain, designated WT-MW11T, was isolated from wood falls on the coast of Wando, an island of South Korea, and its taxonomic position was investigated by using a polyphasic approach. Strain WT-MW11T grew optimally at pH 7.0–8.0, at 25 °C and in the presence of 2.0–3.0 % (w/v) NaCl. Bacteriochlorophyll a was not produced. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain WT-MW11T clustered with Pseudorhodobacter ferrugineus IAM 12616T and Pseudorhodobacter aquimaris HDW-19T, with which it exhibited 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity values of 97.9 and 95.5 %, respectively. Strain WT-MW11T contained Q-10 as the predominant ubiquinone and C18 : 1ω7c as the major fatty acid. The polar lipid profile of strain WT-MW11T was similar to those of P. ferrugineus JCM 20687T and P. aquimaris HDW-19T. The DNA G+C content of strain WT-MW11T was 61.6 mol% and its mean DNA–DNA relatedness value with P. ferrugineus JCM 20687T was 12.3 %. The phylogenetic and genetic distinctiveness and differential phenotypic properties revealed that strain WT-MW11T was distinguishable from the two recognized species of the genus Pseudorhodobacter . On the basis of the data presented, strain WT-MW11T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Pseudorhodobacter , for which the name Pseudorhodobacter wandonensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is WT-MW11T ( = KCTC 23672T = CCUG 61506T). The description of the genus Pseudorhodobacter is emended.

A novel anamorphic yeast species is described to accommodate three isolates recovered from the guts of three different wood-boring insect larvae collected in Henan, central China. On the basis of sequence analyses of the D1/D2 domains of the large-subunit rRNA gene and the internal transcribed spacer regions, the three strains are assigned to a novel species of the genus Wickerhamomyces, although the formation of ascospores was not observed. These strains also exhibited a number of distinct morphological and physiological characteristics that clearly differentiated them from Wickerhamomyces mucosus, Candida odintsovae and Wickerhamomyces rabaulensis, the most closely related species. In view of the phenotypic differences and unique rRNA gene sequences, we consider that these three isolates represent a novel species of the genus Wickerhamomyces, Wickerhamomyces mori sp. nov. The type strain is NYNU 1216T ( = CICC 1983T = CBS 12678T).

Aureobasidium thailandense sp. nov. is described from cultures of material collected on leaves and wooden surfaces in Thailand and the type isolate is NRRL 58539T. Phylogenetically it is distinct from other species of the genus Aureobasidium. Phenotypically it is distinguished by its cardinal growth temperatures, salt tolerance and production of reddish brown hyphal pigmentation in PDA cultures, but micro-morphologically it is not clearly distinguishable from Aureobasidium pullulans. Unlike A. pullulans, A. thailandense sp. nov. produces a non-pullulan extracellular polysaccharide whose characteristics are unknown. The two known isolates of A. thailandense sp. nov. possess an approx. 500 bp type I intron in the 18S rRNA gene that is present in ITS amplifications using primers ITS4 and ITS5. A. pullulans isolates uniformly lack this intron.

Two strains isolated from rotten wood were included in the Saccharomyces group based on morphological characteristics. However, rRNA gene sequence analyses (including the 18S rRNA gene, 26S rRNA gene D1/D2 domain and internal transcribed spacer region) indicated that these two strains represent a novel species of Naumovozyma, for which the name Naumovozyma baii sp. nov. is proposed (type strain: BW 22T = CGMCC 2.04520T = CBS 12642T). The MycoBank number of the new species is MB800484.

Two xylose-utilizing yeast strains isolated from rotten wood collected in the rainforest in different mountains of Hainan province, southern China, were studied. Sequence analysis of the large subunit rDNA D1/D2 domain and internal transcribed spacer region revealed that the strains represent a novel anamorphic yeast species, for which the name Candida cellulosicola sp. nov. is proposed; the type strain is HNX16-2T ( = CGMCC 2.3503T = CBS 11952T). Phylogenetically, the novel species was closely related to a xylose-utilizing teleomorphic ascomycetous yeast species Spencermartinsiella europaea in the family Trichomonascaceae, but differed from the latter by 3.0 % mismatches in the D1/D2 domain.

A novel species, Aspergillus saccharolyticus sp. nov., belonging to the Aspergillus section Nigri group is described. This species was isolated in Denmark from treated hardwood. Its taxonomic status was determined using a polyphasic taxonomic approach including phenotypic (morphology and extrolite profiles) and molecular (β-tubulin, internal transcribed spacer and calmodulin gene sequences, and universally primed PCR fingerprinting) analysis. Phenotypic and molecular data enabled this novel species to be clearly distinguished from other black aspergilli. A. saccharolyticus is a uniseriate Aspergillus species that is morphologically similar to Aspergillus japonicus and Aspergillus aculeatus, but has a totally different extrolite profile compared to any known Aspergillus species. The type strain of A. saccharolyticus sp. nov. is CBS 127449T ( = IBT 28509T).

During a survey of yeasts associated with wood-ingesting insects, six strains of the Sugiyamaella clade were isolated from the gut of passalid and tenebrionid beetles and the decayed wood inhabited by them. Phylogeny based on rRNA gene sequences placed these yeasts as members of Sugiyamaella smithiae, Sugiyamaella americana, Candida lignohabitans and a novel species closely related to Su. americana. The only strain of the novel species, EH008T, could be unquestionably distinguished from its relatives by DNA sequences and other taxonomic characteristics. Ascospore production was not observed under the laboratory conditions tested. Therefore, this novel species is proposed as Candida bullrunensis sp. nov. (type strain EH008T = ATCC MYA-4660T = CBS 11840T).

Ten strains of a novel heterothallic yeast species were isolated from rotten wood collected at different locations in Hungary. Analysis of gene sequences for the D1/D2 domain of the large subunit rRNA, as well as analysis of concatenated gene sequences for the nearly complete nuclear large subunit rRNA, nuclear small subunit rRNA and translation elongation factor 1-α, placed the novel species in the family Trichomonascaceae, but showed that it was distinct from all currently recognized genera. The name Spencermartinsiella europaea gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed to accommodate the new genus and novel species. The novel species could be distinguished from recognized species of neighbouring genera on the basis of standard phenotypic characteristics. The type and isotype strains of Spencermartinsiella europaea are NCAIM Y.01817T ( = NRRL Y-48265T = CBS 11730T) and NCAIM Y.01819I ( = NRRL Y-48266I = CBS 11731I), respectively.

During a study of newly isolated yeast strains utilizing d-xylose as sole carbon source, eight strains, isolated from decayed wood, were found to represent two novel anamorphic, ascomycetous yeast species based on sequence analysis of the 26S rDNA D1/D2 domain and internal transcribed spacer region, and phenotypic characterization. The names Candida laoshanensis sp. nov. (type strain MLRW 6-2T=AS 2.4030T=CBS 11389T) and Candida qingdaonensis sp. nov. (type strain MLRW 7-1T=AS 2.4031T=CBS 11390T) are proposed for these two novel species; the closest relatives of the two novel species are Candida pomicola and Candida marilandica, respectively.
