Introduction: Expanding knowledge on tobacco use and quitting outcomes in Chhattisgarh, India, is crucial. Limited data hinder the assessment of tobacco use prevalence and quitting outcomes in the region. This household-based cross-sectional study aimed to assess smokeless tobacco (SLT) use and quit behaviour among village dwellers aged 35-44 and 65-74 years in Jamul, Chhattisgarh., Materials and Methods: A survey was conducted among 450 participants, utilising a pretested questionnaire and data analysis using IBM Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) v23., Results: The study revealed that among the survey participants, 61.1% were males and 38.9% were females. The prevalence of SLT use was found to be 67.8%, with 59.1% of current SLT users reporting daily use. Middle-aged individuals predominantly chose gutkha, while khaini was more common among the elderly. Tobacco and paan with tobacco were also commonly used forms. Gudakhu, a popular SLT product for oral hygiene and easy defecation, was reported by 71.34% of participants. Television warnings and SLT packages proved to be successful methods for disseminating information about the dangers of SLT use. However, SLT users who attempted to quit independently reported encountering one or more withdrawal symptoms, which posed significant obstacles to quitting SLT., Conclusion: Community-based awareness programmes are implemented via regional television (TV) channels, coupled with cessation initiatives, including professional counselling, pharmaceutical interventions and support of peer. Changing attitudes against SLT use and promoting tobacco-free environments are prioritized. Background: In recent times, single-sitting root canal therapy has gained momentum over multiple-sitting root canal therapy due to its superior clinical outcome and less time required for treating the patient. Aim: Thus, the aim of current study was to compare the expression of interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) in the serum of patients undergoing single-sitting and multiple-sitting root canal treatment., Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional experimental study was conducted on 300 subjects who were indicated for root canal treatment. Subjects were categorized into Group I (single visit) and Group II (multiple visits).Clinical data was obtained and serum samples were collected both before and after 1 week of treatment completion. Inclusion criteria were those patients (a) over 18 years of age, (b) without any disease of inflammatory etiology, and (c) who had not previously received endodontic treatment or any related therapeutic treatment. Exclusion criteria were those (a) without a complete clinical history, (b) with greater than one indicated tooth, (c) who did not complete their treatment, and (d) with any periodontal disease. Chi-square and Student's t -test were applied., Results: It was found that in single-sitting root canal treatment, there was a statistically significant reduction in these inflammatory biomarkers, although no difference in clinical efficacy was observed., Conclusion: Single-visit root canal treatment is a better option for treatment of pulpitis compared to multiple-sitting treatment., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts of interest., (Copyright: © 2022 Journal of Family Medicine and Primary Care.)

Background: The present study was aimed to evaluate the efficacy of 1.2% Atorvastatin (ATV) with 1.2% Rosuvastatin (RSV) as local drug delivery for treatment of Chronic Periodontitis (CP)., Materials and Methods: Forty patients were equally divided into two groups. Group A underwent scaling and root debridement and 1.2% ATV gel (1.2 mg/0.1 mL) was placed, whereas group B received scaling and root debridement and RSV (1.2 mg/0.1 ml) was placed., Results: The results showed that both the groups had improvement in all the recorded parameters, and the results obtained were statistically significant. When comparison was made between the groups, no significant difference was obtained between atorvastatin and rosuvastatin at baseline in all recorded parameters. However, after 6 months significant improvement was recorded in CAL (Clinical attachment level) and PD (Probing depth). The plaque index (PI) and gingival index (GI) score however showed improvement, but it did not attain the level of significance., Conclusion: The present study showed improvement in clinical parameters with the use of ATV and RSV gel when used in combination with scaling and root planing (SRP) in CP patients. Patients with RSV gel showed up significantly better than the ones in which ATV gel was placed., Competing Interests: None

Aims: To study the impact of vestibular suppressant drugs (VSD) on provocative positional tests (PPT) in patients with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV)., Settings and Design: A prospective case-control observational study., Materials and Methods: Patients with a history suggestive of BPPV were tested for PPT. Patients with vertiginous symptoms and with nystagmus on PPT were classified as objective BPPV (O-BPPV, control group), while those without nystagmus with no alternate diagnosis were classified as subjective BPPV (S-BPPV, case group). Details of VSD treatment were noted in all the patients. In both groups, patients were instructed to discontinue VSD and were further assigned as the VSD and non-VSD subgroups. Patients were followed for 2 months with PPT every week. PPT positive patients were treated by vestibular rehabilitation maneuvers., Statistics: Student t-test with two-tailed, unpaired, was used for continuous scale and Chi-square test for categorical differences between the two groups., Results: 295 consecutive BPPV patients were enrolled in the study, 55 in the S-BPPV group and 240 in the O-BPPV group. Significantly higher proportion of patients in the S-BPPV group were on VSD at presentation, 80.00% vs. 53.75% (OR 2.52; 95% CI: 1.30-4.86), P = 0.006. In an unadjusted analysis of the S-BPPV group following discontinuation of VSD, PPT became positive in 79.54% of patients as compared to 18.19% in the non-VSD group (OR 35.0; 95% CI: 6.2-197.3), P < 0.001., Conclusion: A higher proportion of S-BPPV patients were receiving VSD in comparison to O-BPPV at the initial visit. Objectives: Health status is associated with socioeconomic status (SES) of the individuals. The aim of this study was to identify any link between the SES and influenza-like illness (ILI)., Materials and Methods: This observational case-control study was done on 18-70 years old patients presented with ILI (cases) at tertiary care hospital of western India. Controls were selected from demographically matched elective surgery patients except the SES. SES was evaluated as per the Modified B G Prasad 2017 scale and participants were further classified in lower SES (per capita income <2000 INR) and non-lower SES groups., Results: 810 cases and 830 controls were compared. Many cases were from lower SES, had poor hand hygiene, and were using soil, mud, ash (SMA) for hand cleaning as compared to the control. Among the cases significant numbers were from lower SES (543/810[67%], P < 0.02), many were alcoholics, smokers, had poor hand hygiene, were using SMA for hand cleaning, and had preexisting chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), while few were having diabetes in the lower SES group as compared to the non-lower SES group. ILI was more common among lower SES class in unadjusted analysis (odds ratio [OR] 1.58, 95% CI 0.89-2.76) and the results were significant even after the adjustment of covariates (OR 1.62, 95% CI, 0.94-2.85)., Conclusion: Lower SES people were 2.8 times more prone to ILI as compared to the age- and sex-matched control in western part of India., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts of interest., (Copyright: © 2020 Journal of Family Medicine and Primary Care.)

Aim: The aim of this study was to comparatively evaluate stability changes in palatal implants during the early stages of bone healing with chemically modified sandblasted/acid-etched (modSLA) titanium surface compared with a standard sandblasted (SLA) titanium palatal implants., Materials and Methods: A statistically significant number ( n = 40; 24 females and 16 males) of adult subjects who volunteered and have their informed consent for participating in the study were selected. These volunteers were randomly allocated to the experimental group (modSLA surface) and to the control group (SLA surface) with 20 subjects in each group. Documentation of implant stability was done by assessing resonance frequency analysis (RFA) at implant insertion, followed by subsequent assessments each week till 12 th week from baseline (1-12 weeks). RFA values were expressed as an implant stability quotient (ISQ)., Results: Immediately after installation of implant, the ISQ values for both surfaces tested were not significantly different and yielded mean values of 75.28 ± 5.23 for the control and 73.16 ± 4.81 for the test surface. In the first 2 weeks after implant installation, both groups presented only small changes and thereafter a reducing trend in the mean ISQ levels. In the test group, after 4 weeks a tendency toward increasing ISQ values was observed, and 6 weeks after surgery the ISQ values corresponded to those after implant insertion. For the SLA control group, the trend changed after fifth week and yielded ISQ values corresponding to the baseline after ninth week. After 12 weeks of observation, the test surface yielded significantly higher stability values of 78.68 ± 2.9 compared with the control implants of 75.5 ± 3.19, respectively., Conclusion: The results undoubtedly support and validate the potential for chemical modification of the SLA surface to positively influence the biologic process of osseointegration and also a faster healing., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts of interest., (Copyright: © 2020 Journal of Family Medicine and Primary Care.)

The aim of this survey-based study was to recognize professional determinants that account for variations in the level of orthodontic services provided and which distinguish providers and nonproviders of orthodontic services. Multiple regression analysis revealed that four practitioner characteristics explained 43% of the variance in the number of orthodontic patients treated. Dentists who treated more orthodontic patients (1) treated more general practice patients, (2) frequently used multiple sources to keep up to date in orthodontics, (3) perceived their patient base to contain more children, and (4) were likely to have attended an orthodontic course. The null hypothesis that selected characteristics of dentists providing orthodontic services were no different from those of dentists not providing orthodontic services was rejected. The provision of orthodontic services was associated with a higher level of continuing orthodontic education and treating more general practice patients, especially children., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts of interest.

Aim: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the radiographic length of velum (LV), width of velum (WV), velum angle (AV), depth of pharynx (PD), Need's ratio (NR), inclination angle (AI) in different morphological types of soft palate according to growth patterns in skeletal class I individuals., Methodology: 80 pretreatment lateral cephalograms of patients with skeletal class I malocclusion (ANB 2--4°) were divided on basis of six types of soft palate and further into three subgroups according to growth pattern and evaluation of LV, WV, angle with the palatal plane, and NR was done. Kruskal--Wallis test was used for the comparison between the groups., Results: Statistically significant difference was verified among all groups for measurement of NR. The highest NR was seen in Crook type of soft palate (mean 0.9). Similarly, the vertical growth pattern in all the six types of soft palate exhibited a higher NR than the average and horizontal growth pattern group; the highest being exhibited by vertical group in type VI (crook shaped). Velopharyngeal insufficiency is directly related to NR., Conclusion: Vertical growth pattern has the highest susceptibility to velopharyngeal insuffiency and speech and sleep apnea disorders., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts of interest.

Background: Compound tincture benzoin (CTB) is used as a post-procedure skin seal antiseptic agent since ancient times; but this drug is reported to cause allergic contact dermatitis and other unwanted side effects. Our aim of the present study was to compare alternative agent like Medicated Adhesive dressing (MAD) with CTB as a post-procedure skin seal dressing., Design: This prospective randomized controlled experimental study included an equal number of patients in MAD and CTB as a post-operative seal dressing material for percutaneous interventions. Both the groups were graded for various efficacy parameters like comfort, applicability, dressing material, and immediate post-operative complications by operating doctor and attending nurse with a maximum 10 points in each group., Results: 120 patients were studied in each MAD and CTB group. Out of total patients 31.25% were males and the mean age of the patient was 33.56 ± 11.10. Allergic contact dermatitis developed in 9 (7.49%) of CTB group and in 1 (0.83%) of MAD group ( P < 0.002), while local site skin infections were noted in 8 (6.67%) of CTB group and in 1 (0.83%) of MAD ( P < 0.002). Operating doctor graded MAD and CTB to 7.60 ± 0.49 and 3.62 ± 0.48 ( P < 0.003); and attending nurse 7.40 ± 0.49 and 3.41 ± 0.49 ( P < 0.003) respectively., Conclusion: MAD is a safe, efficient and non-inferior alternative dressing material for post-procedure skin incision seal in comparison to CTB., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts of interest.

Aim: This study aimed to compare the canal-centering ability, apical transportation, and remaining dentin thickness (RDT) of OneShape and WaveOne (WO) systems using cone-beam computed tomography., Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of two rotary systems in maintaining original root canal anatomy., Materials and Methods: Forty extracted human single-rooted mandibular premolars were used in the present study. Preinstrumentation scans of all teeth were taken, canal curvatures were calculated, and the samples were randomly divided into two groups with twenty samples in each group: Group 1 - OneShape (OS) rotary system and Group 2 - WO reciprocation system. Postinstrumentation scans were performed using DICOM software and the two scans were compared to determine the canal-centering ability, canal transportation, and RDT at 1, 3, and 5 mm from the root apex., Results: Using Student's unpaired t -test, results were as follows: for canal-centering ability and RDT, Group 1 showed nonstatistically significant difference at 1 and 5 mm, while statistically significant difference ( P < 0.05) at 3 mm was obtained. For canal transportation, Group 1 showed statistically significant difference ( P < 0.05) at 1 and 3 mm and nonsignificant difference was obtained at 5 mm, but for Group 2, nonstatistically significant difference ( P > 0.05) was obtained at 1, 3, and 5 mm. When comparing the RDT between both the groups, the difference was not statistically significant ( P > 0.05)., Conclusion: WO single reciprocation file has better canal-centering ability, maintains original canal curvature, causes lesser canal transportation, and preserves more dentine as compared to OS., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts of interest.

Aims: To compare the canal transportation, centering ability, and remaining dentin thickness of WaveOne and ProTaper systems using cone beam computed tomography., Subjects and Methods: Forty extracted human single-rooted premolars were used in the present study. Preinstrumentation scanning of all teeth was taken; canal curvatures were calculated, and the samples were randomly divided into two groups, with twenty samples in each group; one group was instrumented with WaveOne system and the other group with ProTaper rotary system. Postinstrumentation scans were performed, and the two scans were compared to determine canal transportation, centering ability, and remaining dentin thickness at 3 mm, 6 mm, and 9 mm from the root apex., Statistical Analysis Used: Student's unpaired t-test., Results: Using Student's unpaired t-test, results were as follows: for canal transportation, Group 1 showed significant difference at 3 mm and 6 mm and insignificant difference at 9 mm while Group 2 showed insignificant difference in all the three regions. For centering ability and remaining dentin thickness, Group 1 showed insignificant difference at 3 mm and 9 mm while significant difference at 6 mm was obtained. When comparison of remaining dentin thickness was done at three levels using two groups WaveOne and ProTaper, there was no significant difference between two groups., Conclusions: (1) WaveOne single reciprocation file system respected better canal anatomy better than ProTaper. (2) Individually, centering ability of WaveOne was better at 3 mm, 6 mm, and 9 mm levels. (3) However, ProTaper individually was better centered at 3 mm (apical third) and 9 mm (coronal 3(rd)) levels than 6 mm level (middle third).

Aim: The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of alcohol and nonalcohol containing mouth rinses on the color stability of a nanofilled resin composite restorative material., Materials and Methods: A total of 120 samples of a nanofilled resin composite material (Tetric N-Ceram, Ivoclar Vivadent AG, FL-9494 Schaan/Liechtenstein) were prepared and immersed in distilled water for 24 h. Baseline color values were recorded using Color Spectrophotometer 3600d (Konica Minolta, Japan). Samples were then randomly distributed into six groups: Group I - distilled water (control group), Group II - Listerine, Group III - Eludril, Group IV - Phosflur, Group V - Amflor, and Group VI - Rexidin. The postimmersion color values of the samples were then recorded, respectively., Results: Significant reduction in the mean color value (before and after immersion) was observed in nonalcohol containing mouth rinses (P < 0.001)., Conclusion: All mouthrinses tested in the present in-vitro study caused a color shift in the nanofilled resin composite restorative material, but the color shift was dependent on the material and the mouthrinse used. Group VI (Rexidin) showed maximum color change.
