Background: Burning mouth syndrome is an idiopathic condition characterized by burning pain in a normalappearing oral mucosa lasting at least four to six months. In the case of secondary burning mouth syndrome is associated with local or systemic factors (such as thyroid disorders) that can cause these symptoms. The aim of this review was to study the relationship between thyroid disorders and burning mouth syndrome. Material and Methods: The present study followed the PRISMA guidelines. An electronic search strategy was developed for PubMed/Medline, Scopus and Cochrane. The following combination of keywords and Boolean operators were used: Thyroid AND burning mouth; Thyroid AND burning mouth syndrome; Hypothyroidism AND burning mouth; Hypothyroidism AND burning mouth syndrome; Hyperthyroidism AND burning mouth; Hyperthyroidism AND burning mouth syndrome. The results were processed by existing free software in https:// www.graphpad.com/. To evaluate the association of the categorical variables we used the Fisher test at a level of significance of p-value ≤ 0,05. As a primary summary measure the Odds Ratio (OR) has been used. To analyze the risk of bias the guidelines of the GRADE guide were used and the grade of evidence was analyzed by the guide of Joanna Briggs Institute: Levels of Evidence and Grades of Recommendations. Introduction: Lichen planus , is a autoinmune pathology coursing with reticular and white lesions in oral mucosa and could appear on limbs, trunk, hair and ungles. It's a chronical disease characterized by periods of remission and exacerbation of symptoms and only symptomatic treatment is available. Clinic case: Male of 66 years old who came to our service to assess retrocommissural bilateral white lesions. He refered hypertension, MD2 and hypercholesterolemia treated with doxazosin, gemfibrozil, lercanidipine, torasemide and glicazide. He smoked 12 cigarettes/day and no known allergies. We recommended to let smoking habits and was cited for a new control three months later. In that visit he explained that he reduced consumption of tobacco but lessions remained the same so we decided to take a biopsy. obtaining a pathological outcome of focal epithelial hyperplasia without atypia with paraqueratosis, acute inflammation and microorganisms compatible with candida. We prescribed Mycostatin® for one month. In the following visit the pacient came whitout changes and when we asked for lesions in other locations he refered that he had other skin lesions, treated by dermatologist, in legs, arms and back compatibles with lichen planus.

Inverted ductal papilloma of the oral cavity is an infrequent benign neoplasm of papillary appearance that originates in the secretory duct of a salivary gland. The etiology is unknown, though some authors have related it to human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. We present the case of a 40-year-old woman with a tumor of the lower lip mucosa. Histopathological study of the lesion diagnosed inverted ductal papilloma of the oral cavity. Human papillomavirus DNA detection and typing based on tumor lesion DNA amplification and posterior hybridization, revealed no presence of viral DNA. The antecedents of trauma reported by the patient could have played an important role in the development of this tumor. Objective: The aim of this in vitro experimental study was to perform histological evaluation of the thermal effect produced on soft tissue irradiated with CO2 , Er,Cr:YSGG or diode lasers. Study design: Porcine oral mucosa samples were irradiated with Er,Cr:YSGG laser at 1 W with and without water / air spray, at 2 W with and without water / air spray, and at 4 W with water / air spray, with CO2 laser at 1 W, 2 W, 10 W, 20 W continuous mode and 20 W pulsed mode and diode laser at 2W, 5W, and 10W pulsed mode. The thermal effect was evaluated measuring the width of damaged tissue adjacent to the incision, stained positively for hyalinized tissue with Hematoxylin-Eosin and Masson Trichrome stains. Besides, histological changes in the irradiated tissue were described using subjective grading scales. Results: The evaluated lasers developed a wide range of thermal damage with significant differences between groups. The samples with lowest thermal effect were those irradiated with Er,Cr:YSGG laser using water / air spray, followed by CO2 and diode lasers. Conclusions: Emission parameters of each laser system may influence the thermal damage inflicted on the soft tissue, however, the wave length of each laser determines the absorption rate characteristics of every tissue and the thermal effect.

Objetivo: el objetivo principal de este trabajo es comparar los resultados obtenidos tras la exéresis de mucoceles con bisturí frío y con el láser de CO2, en base a las complicaciones y recidivas postquirúrgicas observadas. Pacientes y Método: estudiamos 68 casos de mucocele de glándulas salivales menores. 38 fueron tratados mediante la técnica convencional (exéresis en huso con bisturí frío) y 30 empleando el láser de CO2 (a potencias entre 5 y 7 W). Se analizaron la distribución por sexo, la edad, la localización, el tamaño, los síntomas, el tiempo de evolución, los factores etiológicos, el tipo de tratamiento, las complicaciones y las recidivas tras la exéresis quirúrgica. Resultados: la muestra comprendía 40 varones (58.8%) y 28 mujeres (41.2%), de edades comprendidas entre los 6 y los 65 años (media 26 años). El diagnóstico histológico fue de mucocele por extravasación en el 95% de los casos. La localización más frecuente fue el labio inferior (73.5%). El tamaño medio fue de 9 milímetros de diámetro y en la mayoría de los casos no se detectó ningún factor etiológico evidente. El tiempo medio de evolución fue de 4 meses. De los mucoceles tratados mediante la exéresis quirúrgica convencional hubo recidiva en el 8.8% de los casos, y en el 13.2% de los pacientes se produjeron complicaciones postoperatorias, siendo la más frecuente la presencia de cicatrices fibrosas. No se apreciaron complicaciones ni recidivas después de un seguimiento mínimo de 12 meses en los casos tratados con el láser de CO2. Conclusiones: la exéresis de los mucoceles con el láser de CO2 proporciona unos resultados más predecibles y con menos complicaciones y recidivas que con el uso del bisturí frío.

Podeu consultar la versió en castellà a http://hdl.handle.net/2445/117376, Objectives: The objective of the present study is to assess whether a good buccodental status (evaluated by means of dentogingival indices), is associated with a lower incidence and severity of oral mucositis in patients with hematological diseases who receive treatment with chemotherapy or bone marrow transplant. Study design: The study was carried out on 97 patients admitted to the Hematology Service of the Hospital Duran y Reynals in Barcelona during 2002-2003. These patients received treatment with chemotherapy or conditioning prior to bone marrow transplant. A descriptive study was made, analyzing oral hygiene, one dental index, and two gingivales indices, and evaluating their relationship with the appearance of mucositis. Results: The patients with high plaque (PI) and gingival (GI) indices during chemotherapy presented a higher percentage of mucositis (77.4% and 65.7% respectively) against those who had little or no visible plaque. In the case of the PI, the differences were statistically significant (p=0.015). Likewise, patients who brushed their teeth 3 times/day presented mucositis in only 26.7% of cases, against those who did not brush, or brushed only once a day (65.9% and 68.4%), these differences also being statistically significant (p=0.013). The CAO showed similar results in patients with or without mucositis (7.59 and 7.03 respectively). Conclusions: In our study, a good gingival status as well as good oral hygiene during chemoradiotherapy is associated with a lower incidence and severity of mucositis.

Diseño del estudio: El estudio se llevó a cabo en 97 pacientes ingresados en el Servicio de Hematología del Hospital Duran y Reynals en Barcelona en los años 2002-2003. Estos pacientes recibían tratamiento con quimioterapia o bien el acondicionamiento previo a un trasplante de médula ósea. Se realizó un estudio descriptivo analizando un índice dental, dos índices gingivales y la higiene oral y su relación con la aparición de mucositis. Resultados: Los pacientes que durante la quimioterapia mostraron valores elevados del índice de placa (IP) y gingival (IG) presentaron un mayor porcentaje de mucositis (77.4% y 65.7% respectivamente) frente a los que tenían poca placa o ésta no era visible. En el caso del IP las diferencias fueron estadísticamente significativas (p=0.015). Asimismo los pacientes que cepillaban los dientes 3veces/día sólo presentaron mucositis en un 26.7% de los casos, frente a los que no cepillaban o lo hacían una vez al día (65.9% y 68.4%), siendo estas diferencias también estadísticamente significativas (p=0.013). El ICAO mostró resultados similares en los pacientes con o sin mucositis (7.59 y 7.03 respectivamente). Conclusiones: En nuestro trabajo, un buen estado gingival así como una buena higiene oral durante la quimiorradioterapia, se asocian a una menor incidencia y gravedad de mucositis.

Objetivo: Conocer la incidencia real de las lesiones en la cavidad bucal de los enfermos con hemopatías malignas, las debidas a la enfermedad y las ocasionadas por los tratamientos recibidos, con el fin de prevenir, diagnosticar y tratar las manifestaciones orales de la hemopatía así como las mucositis originadas por los diferentes tratamientos de quimioterapia o radioterapia. Diseño: se revisaron a pacientes con hemopatías malignas en fase de tratamiento o a los que se les iba a realizar un transplante hematopoyético. Se les realizó un estudio clínico, y en casos necesarios un cultivo microbiológico o un estudio anatomopatológico. Resultados: la realización de un protocolo en estos pacientes para el control de sus lesiones orales así como la realización de una pauta profiláctica y de tratamiento para sus lesiones. Conclusión: mejor conocimiento y manejo de los pacientes con hemopatías malignas.

Introduction Inflammatory papillary hyperplasia (IPH) is a benign lesion of the palatal mucosa. It is usually found in denture-wearers but also has been reported in patients without a history of use of a maxillary prosthesis use. Objetives The aim of this study is to review the literature to assess the prevalence of denture stomatitis and inflammatory papillary hyperplasia and the etiological factors associated. Material and Methods A search was carried out in PubMed (January 2005 to October 2015) with the key words “inflammatory papillary hyperplasia”, “denture stomatitis”, “granular stomatitis” and “Newton’s type III” The inclusion criteria were studies including at least a sample of 50 apparently healthy patients, articles published from 2005 to 2015 written in English. The exclusion criteria were reviews and non-human studies. Results Out of the 190 studies obtained initially from the search 16 articles were selected to be included in our systematic review. The prevalence of denture stomatitis was 29.56% and 4.44% for IPH. We found 5 cases of denture stomatitis among non-denture-wearer individuals. All IPH cases were associated with the use of prosthesis. Smoking and continued use of ill-fitting dentures turned out to be the most frequent risk factors for developing IPH. Conclusions IPH is a rare oral lesion and its pathogenesis still remains unclear. Its presentation among non-denture-wearers is extremely unusual. Objetivo: Analizar la relación entre el grado de inflamación gingival de un grupo de pacientes trasplantados de médula ósea y el tipo de mucositis que presentan. Diseño: Se estudian 58 pacientes con enfermedad hematológica que son trasplantados de médula ósea. La población se clasifica en tres grupos: grupo A (pacientes vistos antes y después de la infusión), grupo B (pacientes explorados sólo después de la infusión) y grupo C (todos los pacientes vistos después de la infusión). Se realiza un protocolo de exploración antes, durante y después del tratamiento. Los resultados se procesan mediante el paquete estadístico SPSS+ Windows, realizándose un análisis descriptivo. Resultados: El CAOd registrado es de 10,7. El índice de sangrado antes de la infusión es del 10%, pasando al 15% post-infusión (22% si se considera el grupo C). El índice gingival pre-tratamiento es de 1,6 (grupo A), pasando a 1,3 post-trasplante y siendo de 1,9 para el grupo B. El índice de placa pasa de 1,8 a 1,4 en el grupo A y es de 2,1 en el grupo B. Background Oral lichen planus (OLP) is one of the most common dermatological diseases which are present in the oral cavity. It is a chronic autoimmune, mucocutaneous disease that affects the oral mucosa as well as the skin, genital mucosa and other sites. Objective Review the relevant information to OLP and its relationship with systemic diseases. Material and Methods Searches were carried out in the Medline/PubMed, Lilacs, Bireme, BVS, and SciELO databases by using key-words. After an initial search that provided us with 243 papers, this number was reduced to 78 from the last seven years. One of the first criteria adopted was a selective reading of the abstracts of articles for the elimination of publications that presented less information regarding the subject proposed for this work. All the selected articles were read in their entirety by all of the authors, who came to a consensus about their level of evidence. The Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN) criteria were used as the criteria of methodological validation. Results Only 9 articles showed an evidence level of 1+, 2+, 3 or 4, as well as a recommendation level of A, B, C or D. Three of them were non-systematic reviews, one was a cohort study and only one was a controlled clinical trial. Three of the studies were case series, with respective sample sizes of 45, 171 and 633 patients. Conclusions Several factors have been associated with OLP. Patients with OLP are carriers of a disease with systemic implications and may need the care of a multidisciplinary team. The correct diagnosis of any pathology is critical to making effective treatment and minimizes iatrogenic harm. For OLP is no different, taking into account its association with numerous systemic diseases that require special attention from health professionals.
