This article identifies academic and public libraries that were constructed in the U.S. as of December 1, 1988, and the number of library buildings in progress within the next four to five years. Each year Library Journal approaches the architectural issue with expectations of more projects, bigger projects, and more funding than ever before. In 1988 the journal features 47 new academic projects completed between July 1, 1987 and June 30, 1988. What continues to amaze is the number of buildings in progress. There are 796 buildings coming within the next four to five years. The asterisked projects in the tables are those projects that were in progress in 1987. The largest academic project in 1988 is a beauty. The Benjamin S. Rosenthal Library of Queens College of the City University of New York. Designed by the architectural firm of Gruzen Samton Steinglass, it cost $54.6 million and occupies 252,000 square feet. The largest new public projects are the Kern County Library in Bakersfield, California and the Virginia Beach Central Library in Virginia. The largest public additions and renovations are also in California. Perhaps it is in keeping with the pace of the Eighties that more libraries are being built in shopping malls. Several new and renovated projects are sharing space with merchants and boutiques.

This section provides information on library construction projects in the U.S., as of 1990. The year's new and innovative construction concepts allow libraries to serve their users better than ever, truly bringing the library and its community together. Between July 1, 1989 and June 30, 1990, 250 public library projects were completed--127 new buildings and 123 additions and renovations--in 44 states. The number of new projects is the highest in more than a decade. Forty-eight academic projects were completed during this period. The largest new library is the Snell Library of Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts. Though many large public projects were completed in 1990, libraries seem to be following the principle of more for less. Fifteen more projects were completed in 1990 than in 1989, yet take up 73,000 less square feet. But more projects, even small ones, mean more library service to local communities. Nowhere is this more evident than in Atlanta, where six projects are prefabricated buildings from Porta-Structures of Maryland that were established in public housing projects. And more libraries are trying to bring service to their patrons in the form of bookstore libraries in malls and shopping centers. Funding remained constant during 1989, with local funding at 71 percent of total funding. Many libraries tried getting community residents involved in projects by having them donate their time and labor as well as their money. Finally, 833 libraries are still in some stage of proposal or construction.
