Transcerebral exposure to 27.12 MHz electric field was used in 100 females of reproductive age with menstrual dysfunction because of neuroendocrine syndrome. The treatment proved highly effective in menstrual disorders of central genesis this making it a treatment of choice in combined therapy of the above patients.

Since the majority of monoamines cannot penetrate through the hematoencephalic barrier, it is difficult to study their central metabolic disturbances. The ethymisole test was used to study the adrenocortical function in patients with hyperandrogenemia; ethymisole can penetrate through this barrier, it stimulates the brain structures that regulate adrenocortical function via endogenic monoamines activation. In 10 patients with the common form of ovarian polycystosis the ACTH and hydrocortisone response to ethymisole administration was virtually the same as in the reference group. This response was enhanced in 13 patients with ovarian polycystosis and adrenal hyperandrogenemia, and it could be arrested by ciproheptadin. This fact evidences, that the adrenal component of hyperandrogenemia is explained by hyperactivity of the hypothalamic serotoninergic systems, that regulate the secretion of corticotropin releasing factor. In 8 patients with ovarian polycystosis and functional hyperprolactinemia ACTH and hydrocortisone reaction to ethymisole administration was reduced; such type of response is observed in metoclopramide blocking of dopaminergic receptors. This fact points to the presence of hypothalamic dopaminergic insufficiency in the patients with ovarian polycystosis and hyperprolactinemia, this insufficiency involving not only the adrenocortical function regulating centers, but, possibly, the tuberoinfundibular system structures as well.

Adrenocortical and ovarian function in women with hyperprolactinemia and hyperandrogenism was evaluated using the functional ACTH1-24-test (with syncorpin--25 U/ml), a radioimmunoassay was used to estimate the levels of II-OCS, androgens, progestins, estrogens and prolactin in the blood serum of 29 women with primary prolactinemic hypogonadism (HG), in 15--with hyperandrogenic ovarian dysfunction, in 27--with the hypothalamic syndrome of neuro-endocrine type, and in 13 healthy women. Marked interference of a clinical picture was found in patients with disturbed menstrual and reproductive function with relation to the presence of galactorrhea and hirsutism. All the examinees retained glucocorticoid function. Patients with hyperprolactinemia demonstrated an increase in the basal concentration of the ovarian androgen androstenedione in the absence of its response to ACTH. The level of 17-oxyprogesterone in them was decreased. A paradoxical response of prolactin to syncorpin was observed in patients with microprolactinemia, the syndrome of the "empty" Turkish saddle and functional type of HG.

Indolamine metabolism was studied in 203 patients with retarded sexual development of different genesis and in 116 girls of the same age. Considerable disorders in the level of serotonin and the products of its metabolism: 5-oxy-indoleacetic acid and melatonin, a hormone synthesized by the pineal gland--were found in abnormal sexual maturation. The nature of revealed changes depended, to a large extent, on genesis of disease which could be used for differential diagnosis of different forms of retarded sexual development. Possible involvement of indolamines in pathogenetic mechanisms ensuring the formation of a pathological process, was discussed.

A total of 76 patients aged 18-39 with hyperprolactinemia were studied for the blood levels of serotonin and histamine and for the urinary ones of epinephrine, norepinephrine, dopa and dopamine. Blood levels of serotonin and histamine were recorded increased whereas the urinary levels of catecholamines were decreased. No correlation was shown between the intensity in the production of lactogenic hormone and those abnormalities found in the levels of the above mentioned amino groups. The shifts observed were supposed to reflect those general tendencies which took place in the central regulatory mechanisms of the gonadal system in patients with excessive production of lactogenic hormone.

The concentration of testosterone and estradiol in the blood plasma and the binding capacity of testosterone-estradiol binding globulin (TEBG) were studied in 30 women and 6 men with Icenko-Cushing's disease in the active phase and in 24 women with hormonally active adrenal tumors. In hypercorticism against a background of unchanged of lowered concentration of plasma estradiol there was a decrease in the concentration of testosterone and an increase in the testosterone-estradiol binding capacity (TEBC) in men and an increase in the concentration of testosterone and a decrease in TEBC in women. The authors have assumed that the testosterone/TEBC ratio reflects more accurately change in the dynamics of androgens than isolated concentrations of testosterone and TEBG, and recommended its determination for the assessment of the body androgenic saturation in disturbed function of the adrenal or sex glands.
