To analyze the dynamic response of a rigid M-shaped jumper subjected to combined internal and external flows, a one-way coupled fluid–structure interaction process is applied. First, CFD simulations are conducted separately for the internal and external fluid domains. The pressure histories on the inner and outer walls are exported and loaded into the finite element model using inverse distance interpolation. Then, FEA is performed to determine the dynamic response, followed by a fatigue assessment based on the obtained stress data. The displacement, acceleration, and stress distribution along the M-shaped jumper are obtained. External flow velocity dominates the displacements, while internal flow velocity dominates the vibrations and stresses. The structural response to the combined effect of internal and external flows, plus the response to gravity alone, equals the sum of the structural responses to internal flow alone and external flow alone. Fatigue damage is calculated for the bend exhibiting the most intense vibration and higher stress levels, and the locations with significant damage correspond to areas with high maximum von Mises stress. This paper aims to evaluate multiple flow fields acting simultaneously on subsea pipelines and to identify the main factors that provide valuable information for their design, monitoring, and maintenance.

The vortex-induced vibrations of two side-by-side flexible cylinders in a uniform flow were studied using a three-dimensional direct numerical simulation at Reynolds number Re = 350 with an aspect ratio of 100, and a center-to-center spacing ratio of 2.5. A mixture of standing-traveling wave pattern was induced in the in-line (IL) vibration, while the cross-flow (CF) vibration displayed a standing-wave characteristic. The ninth vibration mode prominently occurred in both IL and CF directions, along with competition between multiple modes. Proximity effects from the neighboring cylinder caused the primary frequency to be consistent between IL and CF vibrations for each cylinder, deviating from the IL to CF ratio of 2:1 in isolated cylinder conditions. Repulsive mean lift coefficients were observed in both stationary and vibrating conditions for the two cylinders due to asymmetrical vortex shedding in this small gap. Comparatively, lift and drag coefficients were notably increased in the vibrating condition, albeit with a lower vortex shedding frequency. Positive energy transfer was predominantly excited along the span via vortex shedding from the cylinder itself and the neighboring one, leading to increasing lower-mode vibration amplitudes. The flip-flopping (FF) wake pattern was excited in the stationary and vibrating cylinders, causing spanwise vortex dislocations and wake transition over time, with the FF pattern being more regular in the stationary cylinder case.

In order to investigate the effects of the top-end dynamic boundary of risers caused by floater motions on their vortex-induced vibration (VIV) characteristics, a combined model comprising a buoyancy can with a relatively simple structural form and a riser is taken as the research object in the present study. The aspect ratios of the buoyancy can and the riser model are 5.37 and 250, respectively. A set of experimental devices is designed to support the VIV test of the riser with a dynamic boundary stimulating the vortex-induced motion (VIM) of the buoyancy can under different uniform flow and regular wave conditions. Several data processing methods are applied in the model test, i.e., mode superposition, Euler angle conversion, band pass filter, fast Fourier transform, and wavelet transform. Based on the testing results, the effect of low-frequency VIM on the high-frequency VIV of the riser is discussed in relation to a single current, a single wave, and a combined wave and current. It is found that the coupling effect of VIM on the riser VIV presents certain orthogonal features at low current velocities. The effect of the cross-flow VIM component on VIV is far more prominent than that of its counterpart, the in-line VIM, with increasing flow velocity. The VIM in the combined wave–current condition significantly enhances the modulation of vibration amplitude and frequency, resulting in larger fluctuation peaks of vibration response and further increasing the risk of VIV fatigue.

Vortex-induced vibration (VIV) of long-span bridges can be of large amplitude, which can influence serviceability. Therefore, it is important to predict the response of vortex-induced vibration to aid the management of long-span bridges. A novel data-driven model is proposed to predict the time history of the dynamic response of VIV events. Specifically, the proposed model consists of gated recurrent unit (GRU) neural networks and the Newmark-beta method. GRU neural networks can perform accurate sequential prediction, and the Newmark-beta method can complement the physical meaning of the middle output of the proposed model. To aid the accurate prediction of the amplitude of VIV events, the proposed model employs weighted mean square error as the loss function, which can put more emphasis on the amplitude. The proposed model is validated on measured VIV events of a long-span suspension bridge. The weighted mean absolute percentage error and Pearson correlation coefficient of the trained model indicate the effectiveness of the proposed model.

Offshore pipelines of different diameters are often seen in piggyback arrangements in close proximity. Under the effects of external flows, the pipelines may experience vibration. Reliable prediction of the vibration amplitudes is important for the design and operation of these structures. In the present study, the effect of the position angle (α) and gap ratio (G/D) of a piggyback pipeline on the amplitude of 1DOF vortex-induced vibration (VIV) was investigated experimentally in a wind tunnel. The diameter ratio d/D of the two cylinders was 0.5. Five position angles, namely, α = 0°, 45°, 90°, 135°, and 180°, and six gap ratios at each angle, G/D = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, were tested. It was found that both α and G/D affected the amplitude of vibrations significantly. For all gap ratios, the amplitude of vibrations increased from α = 0° to α = 90° and then decreased to a minimum value around α = 135°. The maximum amplitude occurred around α = 90° when G/D = 0, and the minimum occurred around α = 135°, when G/D = 0.2–0.3. At other position angles, the vibration amplitude was less sensitive to G/D, especially when the latter was between 0.1 and 0.4. These results verified those obtained using numerical methods and are invaluable to engineers when designing offshore piggyback pipelines.

Based on the slicing method and overlapping grid method, the bidirectional and sequential coupling of the fluid domain and riser structure is realized by UDF programming. A numerical model of vortex-solid coupling is constructed to study vortex-induced vibration characteristics of risers with different velocity ratios and different oscillation frequencies under the effect of superimposed oscillating flow. With the increase of the velocity ratio, a higher order formation appeared in the transverse vibration envelope of the riser. Meanwhile, with the increase of oscillation frequency, the vertical tube vibration envelope changed from “symmetrical up and down” to “wide up and narrow down”. There is an obvious process of “establishment”, “locking” and “decay” in the transverse-flow displacement of the riser to dimensionless, and the proportion of the “locking” phase increases gradually with the flow rate ratio, changing from 0.50 to 0.62. The effect of the oscillation frequency of the superimposed flow on the proportion of the “locked” stage is not evident. When the oscillation frequency is 0.25f1, the proportion of the “locked” stage of the riser reaches 50%.

The increasing number of suspension bridges has led to designs favoring greater length and flexibility, resulting in a common problem of vortex-induced vibration. While vortex-induced vibration typically does not cause structural damage, it diminishes the bridge’s fatigue resistance and has a detrimental impact on ride comfort. Additionally, this study introduces a road–bridge–vehicle vibration model, proposing an evaluation method for assessing ride comfort during vortex-induced vibrations in long-span bridges. This method features simplified modeling and swift calculations, circumventing the need for intricate finite element modeling and iterative solving. Furthermore, it evaluates ride comfort for vehicles crossing a prototype long-span suspension bridge using the Overall Vibration Total Value (OVTV) and Motion Sickness Incidence (MSI) criteria. This study also analyzes the influence of various parameters on OVTV and MSI, including vehicle speed, road grade, vortex-induced vibration frequency, and amplitude. It establishes a reference limit for vortex-induced vibration amplitude based on OVTV and MSI values. Moreover, the study substantiates that, within the context of vortex-induced vibration, the MSI value is more suitable for evaluating driving comfort compared to the OVTV.

In order to investigate the dynamic response of a marine riser under the coupling effect of multiparameter, a model experiment of a marine riser was designed and carried out. The main parameters of the model test were divided into riser design parameters and flow field parameters. The riser parameters included the elastic modulus, boundary conditions, and top tension forces, and the flow field parameters were the velocities and wave parameters (wave height and period). The riser materials were aluminum (Al) and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), representing the metal riser and fiber-reinforced composite marine riser, respectively, which differ greatly in modulus. Two types of boundary conditions were considered, which were simple supports at both ends (S-S) and simple and fixed supports at each end (S-F). The top tension forces were chosen as 10 N and 30 N, respectively. In terms of the flow velocities, 0.3 m/s and 0.7 m/s were used. For the wave types, the small wave had a period of 1.0 s and a wave height of 5 cm while the large wave had a period of 2.0 s and a wave height of 15 cm. The dynamic response of the riser under 32 different working conditions was studied experimentally, and through the analysis of the experimental data, the effects of various parameters on the dynamic response of the risers were obtained. The results show that the amplitude of the riser was negatively correlated with the elastic modulus, the number of constraints, and the magnitude of the top tension, while it was positively correlated with the flow velocity and wave size. Moreover, the sequences of importance were b3 (flow velocity) > b6 (modulus) > b1 (number of constraints) > b2 (top tension force) > b5 (wave height) > b4 (wave period) for the vibration of the riser in the in-flow direction and b3 (flow velocity) > b1 (number of constraints) > b6 (modulus) > b2 (top tension force) > b5 (wave height) > b4 (wave period) for the vibration of the riser in the cross-flow direction, respectively, according to the multiple linear regression calculation.

This paper carried out wind tunnel tests and numerical analysis to study the effect of the spatial position of deflector plates on the vortex-induced vibration (VIV) of a double-deck truss girder. The wind tunnel tests found that setting the web deflector plate and the lower chord deflector plate significantly suppressed the VIV. In order to study the suppression mechanism of the deflector plate on VIV, numerical simulations were conducted using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method. We analyzed the suppression mechanism of the deflector plate on VIV by combining the vertical amplitude obtained by numerical simulation with the change in the vorticity magnitude and direction. The results showed that the flow velocity around the lower surface of the airflow was reduced, resulting in significantly lower vorticity at the exact position of the lower chord deflector plate and web deflector plate section compared to the original section. The web deflector plate and the lower chord deflector plate broke the vortex shedding mode in the wake flow region, and the vortex shedding frequency was far away from the self-oscillation frequency of the double-deck truss girder, thus suppressing the VIV.

Due to current scouring, submarine cables are prone to be exposed, suspended, and even vortex-induced vibration, which is not conducive to the safe operation of the power grid. In this contribution, the finite element simulation model of a 35 kV three-core optical fiber composite submarine cable with a suspended span length of 9.5 m is established. The natural frequency of the model is obtained through modal analysis. Then the vortex-induced vibration is simulated by the fluid–structure coupling method, and the stress distribution and change law of the torsional optical fiber is extracted. The results show that in the submarine cable, there appears to be a beating vibration and locking phenomena respectively, under two flow velocities. The transverse vibration amplitude of the latter increases significantly due to a resonance state. When the flow direction is perpendicular to the submarine cable, the stress distribution of the torsional optical fiber at the initial moment and at the 1/2 T moment of a vibration cycle approximately represents a mirror image relationship. In addition, the frequency of the stress change is the same as the frequency of the vortex-induced vibration, which can judge whether the vortex-induced vibration occurs. Moreover, the vortex-induced vibration range can be determined by the maximum stress change location.

Large-span suspension bridges are susceptible to wind loads. Therefore, a more precise analysis of their wind-induced vibration response is necessary to ensure the structure’s absolute safety. This investigation conducted wind tunnel tests for the construction and completion stages to reveal the vortex-induced vibration (VIV) phenomenon of a double-deck suspension bridge. The results showed that no VIV occurred during the construction stage. However, the inclusion of railings significantly deteriorated the aerodynamic performance of the suspension bridge, leading to significant VIV at +3° and +5° wind angles of attack. Additionally, reducing the railing ventilation rate can significantly suppress the VIV amplitude. A new analysis method based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation is proposed to investigate the VIV mechanism of the double-deck truss girder. Twenty-nine measurement points were used to explore the vortex that causes VIV. The numerical simulations found that the area above and aft of the upper deck dominated the vertical VIV, while the aft of the lower deck dominated the torsional VIV. Furthermore, the intensity of the vortex in these areas was significantly lower during the construction stage. Moreover, reducing the railing ventilation rate significantly suppresses the torsional VIV by reducing the intensity of the vortex in the region behind the lower deck.

A low stiffness makes long-span suspension bridges sensitive to loads, and this sensitivity is particularly significant for wind-induced nonlinear vibrations. In the present paper, nonlinear vibrations of suspension bridges under the combined effects of static and vortex-induced loads are explored using the nonlinear partial differential–integral equation that models the plane bending motion of suspension bridges. First, we discretized the differential–integral equation through the Galerkin method to obtain the nonlinear ordinary differential equation that describes the vortex-induced vibrations of the bridges at the first-order symmetric bending mode. Then, the approximate analytical solution of the ordinary differential equation was obtained using the multiple scales method. Finally, the analytical solution was applied to reveal the relationships between the vibration amplitude and other parameters, such as the static wind load, the frequency of dynamic load, structural stiffness, and damping. The results show that the static wind load slightly impacts the bridge’s vibrations if its influence on the natural frequency of bridges is ignored. However, the bridge’s vibrations are sensitive to the load frequency, structural stiffness, and damping. The vibration amplitude, as a result, may dramatically increase if the three parameters decrease.

The vortex-induced vibration (VIV) of flexible risers is a complex fluid–structure interaction (FSI) phenomenon. In this study, we conducted a numerical simulation method based on the slicing method to study the vortex-induced vibration (VIV) of deep-sea flexible risers with different slenderness ratios and uniform flow velocities. The method combines the finite element model of the riser structure with the two-dimensional flow field slices solved by the Fluent solver. The fluid–structure interaction was realized by a self-compiled UDF program and the overset mesh technique. The numerical results were validated by comparing them with experimental data. The VIV characteristics of the riser, such as the vibration track, vibration mode, vibration frequency and wake vortex shedding mode, were analyzed. The article reveals the nonlinear dynamic features of flexible riser vibration, such as multi-frequency vibration, wide-frequency vibration and multi-modal vibration. The article also provides insights into the fluid–structure interaction mechanism of VIV of deep-sea flexible risers.

Vortex-induced vibration (VIV) is the periodic motion of a bluff body caused by fluid flow and is widely discussed in the engineering field. With the advancement of science and technology, miniaturization and integration have become the mainstream trends in biomedical chips and electronic systems, resulting in higher heat dissipation requirements per unit area. Therefore, the improvement of the heat dissipation effect of movable structures in the flow channel has been widely discussed. Among them, adding VIV motion in the microchannel generates a vortex structure, which improves heat transfer efficiency. Different from the direct displacement method of active vibration, the passive displacement of VIV is a multi-physics problem. It needs to integrate the flow field and the spring-mass system of the object for fluid–solid coupling, which greatly increases the difficulty of analysis. In this study, the Immersed-boundary method (IBM) combined with the equation of motion is used to numerically study a vortex generator that is elastically installed in a microfluidic channel and is then used to enhance the convective heat transfer of nanofluids in the channel. Unlike the common body-fitted mesh, IBM greatly reduces the computational resources required for mesh regeneration when simulating the problem of object movement in fluid–structure interaction. In addition, Buongiorno’s two-phase mixing model is used to simulate the convective heat transfer of nanofluids in microchannels by considering the Brownian motion and thermophoretic diffusion of nanoparticles in the carrier liquid. By changing the important parameters such as nanofluid concentration, Reynolds number, mass ratio, and Ur, the influence of the response characteristics of vortex-induced vibration on the heat flow field in the microfluidic channel is discussed, and the key factors for enhancing heat transfer are found out.

This study investigated vortex-induced vibrations of marine risers in Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion systems. Flume experiments were conducted under two conditions: Condition 1 was with a fixed riser bottom, and Condition 2 was with a fixed bottom on a mooring platform. The cross-flow acceleration of the riser was measured at different current velocities, and corresponding vibration responses were analyzed. Numerical simulations based on the flume experiments were employed to validate the reliability of the simulation method. Results from the flume experiments revealed vortex-induced resonance in Condition 1 when the flow velocity approached the riser’s natural frequency. In Condition 2, similar vibration responses were observed, with maximum acceleration occurring during flow velocity-induced vortex-induced vibrations. However, at higher flow velocities, the acceleration response showed a decrease followed by an increase, indicating the excitation of higher-order modes. The numerical simulations matched the flume experiments in Condition 1. In Condition 2, while the acceleration response and frequency agreed during vortex-induced resonance, discrepancies arose in the flow velocity that caused vortex-induced vibrations compared to the flume experiments. This study demonstrated the accuracy of numerical simulations in reflecting vortex-induced vibrations of risers, providing a foundation for further research on complex riser systems.

This research investigates the cross-wind aeroelastic effects of tall buildings with hexagonal cross-sections by using aeroelastic models with multiple-degree-of-freedom (MDOF). Cross-wind displacement and acceleration responses at the top of each model are measured using the wind tunnel test. The aerodynamic damping ratios for the two representative wind directions are identified by analyzing the measured responses using the random decrement technique. Results show that large-amplitude vortex-induced vibrations occur for one of the representative wind directions where the vertex of the hexagonal model is against the approaching wind, while there is no significant VIV observed for the other representative wind direction where the face of the hexagonal model is perpendicular to the approaching wind. The most dangerous wind direction is then identified based on the discussion. Two expressions for the cross-wind aerodynamic damping ratio are established for the two wind representative wind directions. The two equations can be used in engineering practice to estimate the cross-wind aerodynamic damping ratio of hexagonal tall buildings.

The long-span double-deck truss girder bridge has become a recommend structural form because of its good performance on traffic capacity. However, the vortex-induced vibration (VIV) characteristics for double-deck truss girders are more complicated and there is a lack of related research. In this research, wind tunnel tests were utilized to investigate the VIV characteristics of a large-span double-deck truss girder bridge. Meanwhile, the VIV suppression effect of the aerodynamic mitigation measures was measured. Furthermore, the VIV suppression mechanism was studied from the perspective of vortex shedding characteristics. The results indicated that the double-deck truss girder had a significant VIV when the wind attack angles were +3° and +5°. The aerodynamic mitigation measures had an influence on the VIV response of the double-deck truss girder. The upper chord fairing and lower chord inverted L-shaped deflector plate played a crucial role in suppressing VIV. Numerical analysis indicated that vortex shedding above the upper deck or in the wake region may dominate vertical VIV, while vortex shedding in the wake region of the lower deck may dominate torsional VIV. The upper chord fairing and lower chord inverted L-shaped deflector plate disrupted the original vortex shedding pattern in both regions, thereby suppressing VIV. This research can provide a foundation for bridge design and vibration suppression measures for large-span double-deck truss girder bridges.

Vortex-induced vibration (VIV) of bluff bodies is one type of flow-induced vibration phenomenon, and the possibility of using it to harvest hydrokinetic energy from marine currents has recently been revealed. To develop an optimal harvester, various parameters such as mass ratio, structural stiffness, and inflow velocity need to be explored, resulting in a large number of test cases. This study primarily aims to examine the validity of a parameter optimization approach to maximize the energy capture efficiency using VIV. The Box–Behnken design response-surface method (RSM-BBD) applied in the present study, for an optimization purpose, allows for us to efficiently explore these parameters, consequently reducing the number of experiments. The proper combinations of these operating variables were then identified in this regard. Within this algorithm, the spring stiffness, the reduced velocity, and the vibrator diameter are set as level factors. Correspondingly, the energy conversion efficiency was taken as the observed value of the target. The predicted results were validated by comparing the optimized parameters to values collected from the literature, as well as to our simulations using a computational-fluid dynamics (CFD) model. Generally, the optimal operating conditions predicted using the response-surface method agreed well with those simulated using our CFD model. The number of experiments was successfully reduced somewhat, and the operating conditions that lead to the highest efficiency of energy harvesting using VIV were determined.

Energy converters based on vortex-induced vibrations (VIV) have shown great potential for harvesting energy from low-velocity flows, which constitute a significant portion of ocean energy. However, solid-solid triboelectric nanogenerators (TENG) are not wear-resistant in corrosive environments. Therefore, to effectively harvest ocean energy over the long term, a novel solid-liquid triboelectric nanogenerator based on vortex-induced resonance (VIV-SL-TENG) is presented. The energy is harvested through the resonance between VIV of a cylinder and the relative motions of solid-liquid friction pairs inside the cylinder. The factors that affect the output performance of the system, including the liquid mass ratio and the deflection angle of the friction plates, are studied and optimized by establishing mathematical models and conducting computational fluid dynamics simulations. Furthermore, an experimental platform for the VIV-SL-TENG system is constructed to test and validate the performance of the harvester under different conditions. The experiments demonstrate that the energy harvester can successfully convert VIV energy into electrical energy and reach maximum output voltage in the resonance state. As a new type of energy harvester, the presented design shows a promising potential in the field of ‘blue energy’ harvesting.

A series of numerical simulations of two-degree-of-freedom vortex-induced vibration of two coupled cylinders with unequal diameters are performed at the Reynolds number of 20,000. The effects of incident angle, spacing ratio, and diameter ratio on the VIV responses for two cylinders are investigated. It is shown that the lock-in range of the large cylinder is significantly widened and the maximum vibration amplitude decreases as a result of the existence of small cylinder. The mean drag coefficients and root mean square force coefficients of the large cylinder are not varied significantly with the incident angle and diameter ratio, but the force coefficients of the small cylinder vary considerably under different configurations. For the configuration of α = 0°, d/D = 0.05 and G/D = 0.05, the variations in vibration amplitude and frequency ratio are similar to those of the isolated cylinder. Different vortex shedding modes such as 2S mode, P+S mode, and 2P mode are observed for two coupled cylinders at different reduced velocities for different configurations.

In this study, two thin rectangular PVDFs were installed in the form of a cantilever on a FTEH (funnel-type energy harvester), and a CTEH (cymbal-type energy harvester) was fabricated in a form coupled to the upper part of the support. As a result of measuring the energy harvesting sensitivity according to the installation direction of the CTEH, a high voltage was measured in the structure installed on top of the support across all flow velocity conditions. A composite structure PVDF energy harvester combining CTEH and FTEH was fabricated and the amount of power generated was measured. As a result of measuring the open-circuit voltage of the PVDF energy harvester device with a composite structure to which the optimum resistance of CTEH of 241 kΩ and the optimum resistance of FTEH of 1474 kΩ were applied at a flow rate of 0.25 m/s, the output voltage compared to the RMS average value was 7 to 8.5 times higher for FTEH than for CTEH. When the flow rate was 0.5 m/s, the electrical energy charged for 500 s was measured as 2.0 μWs to 2.5 μWs, and when the flow speed was 0.75 m/s, it reached 2.5 μWs when charged for 300 s, generating the same amount when the flow rate increased by 50%. The time to do it was reduced by 66.7%.

In order to study the influence of chamfered and rounded corners on vortex-induced vibration of super-tall buildings, a series of multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF, in short) aeroelastic models were made, including chamfered-corner models with chamfer ratios of 0%, 2.5%, 5.0%, 7.5%, and 12.5%, and rounded-corner models with rounded ratios of 0%, 12.5%, 15%, and 17.5%. The crosswind displacement response of each aeroelastic model was measured by a laser displacement meter in a wind tunnel. The test results indicate that the crosswind displacement response is significantly reduced when the chamfer ratio increases to 5% or the rounded ratio increases to 12.5%; in particular, the vortex-induced vibration (VIV, in short) response can be reduced by more than 60%, which indicates that the chamfered corner and rounded corner play a good role in restraining the VIV of super high-rise buildings. When the reduced wind speed is small, the reduction of the crosswind response of chamfered and rounded models is mainly caused by the reduction of wind load; when the reduced wind speed approaches the VIV wind speed, the negative aerodynamic damping phenomenon of the model with a proper chamfer ratio and rounded ratio disappears, which shows that the VIV is suppressed not only because the cut corner reduces the wind load but also because the cut corner weakens the aeroelastic effect. Generally speaking, a chamfer ratio of about 7.5% and rounded ratio of about 15% can achieve a good reduction effect on the VIV of super high-rise buildings.

With the extensive construction of ultra-high voltage (UHV) transmission lines, the fatigue damage of steel tube members caused by vortex-induced vibration (VIV) in tubular towers has received growing attention. Although some progress has been made in the research of the VIV of steel tubes in uniform flow, there is still relatively scarce research on the VIV of steel tubes at various inflow conditions. In this paper, a series of wind tunnel tests are conducted to investigate the VIV of the steel tube subjected to uniform, turbulent, and oblique flows. Three turbulence intensities (Iu = 5.9%, 9.7%, and 12.6%), and four yaw angles (α = 10°, 20°, 30°, and 40°) are considered. The results show that the VIV response of the steel tube in the in-line (IL) direction is negligible compared to that in the cross-flow (CF) direction. The displacement amplitude gradually decreases as the turbulence intensity increases, accompanied by a more unstable response. For the inclined steel tube, the VIV maximum amplitude almost remains constant when α ≤ 20°, while it sharply decreased in the case of α = 30° and α = 40°. Furthermore, it was found that the so-called independent principle is applicable for α ≤ 10°.

According to the geometric parameters of the tension leg platform, the test model was made with a scale ratio of 1:61. The model was used to conduct the full-depth simulation test of uniform flow and wave current combination in the test pool. The model test results showed that when the reduced speed was between 5.5 and 8.5, and the lateral motion response of the platform was the most significant. In the interval of the reduced speed, the response frequency of transverse vortex-induced motion was close to the natural transverse frequency of the platform, and resonance occurred. The amplitude of surge motion increased with the increase of reduced speed. Due to the pull of the floating body, the tension of tension legs and risers increased with the flow rate but did not increase significantly in the floating body lock zone. The mooring tension had a certain limiting effect on the floating body sway. The displacement modes of tension legs and risers were greatly affected by the flow velocity. With the flow velocity increasing, the mode order increased. In addition, the increase in tension caused by the large displacement of the floating body had a certain impact on the displacement amplitude. The wave could reduce the sway of the floating body and strengthen the surge. Therefore, under the combined action of wave and current, the tension amplitude of the tension leg and riser was increased compared with that under the uniform flow. The conclusions obtained in this paper could be used for reference in the engineering design of tension legs and risers.

In many special agricultural environments, many wireless sensors have a problem of power supply selection. Energy harvesting in the agricultural environment based on vortex-induced vibration (VIV) has the potential to solve the problem. In this paper, an energy harvester based on the VIV is designed in an agricultural environment. Relevant parameters of the harvester are studied with wind tunnel experiment to improve the efficiency of energy conversation. The results show that: (i) For large mass ratio, m*≫1, and the same mass ratio m*, the smaller the damping ratio ζ, the larger the normalized amplitude A*, the larger the maximum efficiency η of VIV energy harvesting; (ii) m*≫1, and under a certain range of Reynolds numbers, the smaller the mass-damping parameter m*ζ, the larger the normalized amplitude A*, the larger the maximum and average efficiency η of VIV energy harvesting. (iii) m*≫1, the larger the mass ratio m*, the larger the range of resonance; the normalized frequency f*≃1, the stable VIV locked state appears. The research results can provide references for the design of VIV energy harvesters in agricultural environments.

In order to solve the problem of self-energy supply of vehicle-mounted micro-sensors, bridge detection and some other low-power electronic devices in their working state, a vortex-induced flutter composite nonlinear piezoelectric energy harvester (VFPEH) with symmetrical airfoils on both sides of a cylindrical bluff body is designed. The VFPEH consists of a cantilever beam, a cylindrical bluff body connected to the free end of the cantilever beam, and two airfoil components symmetrically fixed at both ends of the shaft, which enables coupling between vortex-induced vibration and flutter. The airfoil symmetrically arranged on both sides of the cylindrical bluff body induces the cantilever beam to produce bending and torsional composite vibrations at high wind velocities, realizing energy harvest in the two degrees of freedom motion direction, which can effectively improve the output power of the energy harvester. Based on a wind tunnel experimental platform, the effect of key parameters matching impedance and the diameter of the cylindrical bluff body on the output performance of the VFPEH is investigated, together with the output performance of the classical vortex-induced energy harvester (VEH), the flutter energy harvester (FEH) and the VFPEH. The experimental results show that for the VFPEH under a combination of vortex-induced vibrations and flutter vibrations has a better output performance than the VEH and the FEH when using the same size. The coupling of vortex-induced vibration and flutter can reduce the start-up wind velocity of the VFPEH and expand the wind velocity range of the high output power of the VFPEH. The VFPEH has a better output performance at the cylindrical bluff body diameter of 30 mm and a load resistance of 140 kΩ. When the wind velocity range is 2 m/s–15 m/s, the maximum output power of the VFPEH is 6.47 mW, which is 129.4 times and 24.9 times of the maximum output power of the VEH (0.05 mW) and FEH (0.26 mW), respectively.

The vortex-induced force of bridges is not synchronized along the span direction. The spatial correlation of vortex-induced force becomes obvious when the span of the bridge structure gradually increases, and the mass gradually decreases. Therefore, it is important to study the spanwise correlation of vortex-induced forces of long-span bridges to ensure the accuracy of the prediction of vortex-induced vibration response of bridges. The study established and improved the theory and experimental research methods for vortex-induced vibration analysis of large-span bridges by discussing the spanwise correlation during vortex-induced vibration of the split double-box beam. Taking Xihoumen Bridge as the object, two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) numerical models of the scaled-down sections were designed and established based on the ANSYS Fluent platform and the RANS SST turbulence model. Based on the Newmark-β algorithm, a User Defined Function (UDF) was written for vortex vibration calculation, the three-dimensional bypass of the split double-box beam in static conditions and vortex-induced vibration of the split double-box beam of which were calculated, and the spanwise correlations of the aerodynamic coefficients, the surface pressure coefficients, and the wake wind velocity of the main girder section were analyzed for the static and vibration states of the bridge. The results show that the self-excited force of the split double-box beam in vortex-induced vibration improved its spanwise correlation. Compared with those in a static state, the spanwise correlation of the lift coefficient and torque coefficient increased by 55% and 87%, respectively, and the resistance coefficient increased by more than 10 times. The correlation of the pressure coefficients increased by 153%. The correlation of wake wind velocity increased by 37% in the along-wind direction and that in the across-wind and vertical-wind direction increased by more than 10 times. The accuracy of the numerical simulation results was verified by comparing the pressure distribution and pressure spanwise correlation of the main beam with field-measured data.

A hydrodynamic wind–wave combined power generation system is a new type of energy device that uses wind and ocean current energy to generate electricity. In this paper, the hydrodynamics of a wind–wave combined power generation system was simulated in Fluent. The fluid–structure coupling simulation of the vortex vibration of the cylindrical oscillator was realized using UDF and dynamic mesh technology. The Vortex-Induced Vibration (VIV) characteristics of the cylindrical oscillator were analyzed, and the reliability of the numerical simulation method was verified by comparing the amplitude and trajectory of the eddy-excited vibration with the classic experiments of Jauvtis and Williamson. The VIV characteristics of cylindrical oscillators with different mass ratios were studied in terms of vibration response, motion trajectory, and the streamwise equilibrium position. The effect of the mass ratio on the hydrodynamics of a wind–wave combined power generation system was simulated using spring damping, achieving the goal of carrying out preliminary research work simulating the wind–wave combined power generation device. Some useful conclusions were obtained through calculation, which provided data support for the corresponding platform device. This study shows that in cylindrical oscillators with different mass ratios, the overall trend at the same reduced velocity is that the larger the mass ratio, the smaller the crossflow amplitude. The cylindrical oscillators with mass ratios of one and two appear in the upper branch, while cylindrical oscillators with mass ratios of three and four do not appear, and with the increase in the mass ratio, the frequency ratio in the lower branch tends toward one. At the same reduced velocity, the lower the mass ratio, the larger the corresponding downstream equilibrium position, and the higher the energy acquisition efficiency.

Small wind energy harvesting converts aeroelastic vibration into electricity and can provide independent power supplies for low-power-consumption sensors, which are not convenient for replacing chemical batteries frequently. As wind energy harvesters collect sustainable energy from the ambient environment, they are environmentally friendly and energy saving. The most widely adopted wind-induced vibration mechanisms for designing wind energy harvesters are vortex-induced vibration (VIV) and galloping. VIV-based piezoelectric energy harvesters (VIVPEHs) can stabilize the output voltage at low wind speeds, while galloping-based piezoelectric energy harvesters (GPEHs) can operate at high wind speeds and have wide bandwidths. This paper uses a spring to connect the two traditional wind harvesters to constitute a hybrid wind piezoelectric energy harvester (HWPEH). It is expected that the HWPEH can inherit the advantages of both traditional wind harvesters, i.e., it can reduce the cut-in wind speed, as the traditional VIVPEH, and have a broad working bandwidth, as the traditional GPEH. The effects of the mechanical and circuit parameters on the output voltage and power of the HWPEH are investigated and compared to traditional wind harvesters. It has been found that the aerodynamic behavior of the HWPEH can be customized by changing the masses, stiffnesses, shunt resistances, and damping coefficients. The proposed HWPEH can outperform traditional wind harvesters if the system parameters are well tuned.

Inspired by the cactus in nature, a cactus-like cross-sectional structure was proposed to achieve the VIV suppression. The VIV of the elastically mounted cylinder was realized based on the ANSYS Fluent and User Defined Function (UDF). The dynamic motion of the cylinder was solved by the single-step time integration algorithms Newmark-β method. The in-house code was first validated by studying the 2DOF VIV of a circular cylinder with small mass ratio over the range U*=2~13, and the results agree well with the published literature. Then, the performance of surface bulge on VIV suppression was studied and four different coverage ratios (CR) were considered, i.e., 0%, 20%, 33%, and 40%. The VIV of a bulged cylinder can be effectively suppressed. CR20 performs the best in VIV suppression and the suppression efficiency in streamwise and transverse direction are 44.6% and 63.1%, respectively. The mechanism of surface bulge on the VIV suppression is the shift of separation point of the shear layer and vortices form between the surface bulges.

The flow past a 2D circular cylinder with control rods is numerically simulated in the present paper. The suppression effects of the control rods on the vortex-induced vibration (VIV) characteristics of the cylinder are investigated using the overlapping grid method and user defined function. By setting the cylinder’s vibration amplitude and drag force coefficient as the expected objective function, a multi-objective optimization is carried out to enhance the suppression performance at different reduced velocities, for which the rod-to-cylinder diameter ratio, gap ratio, incidence angle and reduced velocity are used as design variables. The regression expressions, which are obtained by Box–Behnken design (BBD), are employed in nondominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II) to minimize the objectives. It is found that both the optimized vibration amplitude and drag force coefficient exhibit a monotonically decreasing linear trend with the reduced velocity, and as the reduced velocity decreases, the range of the optimized points gradually decreases. Subsequently, the optimized cases are verified by CFD simulations and compared with the original cases. For the samples at the reduced velocity of 4, 5, and 6, the vibration amplitude after optimization decreases by 15.1%, 24.8%, and 21.6%, respectively.

A model test was carried out to reveal the vortex-induced vibration characteristics of a deep-sea riser under bidirectional shear flow. Bandpass filtering and modal analysis were used to process the test strain data, and the amplitude and frequency response characteristics of the vortex-induced vibration of the riser in the bidirectional shear flow field were obtained. The results of the test data analysis show that the dominant frequency of the vortex-induced vibration of the riser model under bidirectional shear flow is locked in the natural frequency of the riser and does not increase with the increase in flow velocity, that the average resistance coefficient of the riser model has little change under different flow velocities because of the distribution characteristics of the “bidirectional shear” flow field, that there is an extreme value of the shear force in the middle of the riser model, and that the Strouhal number in the transverse direction of the vortex-induced vibration under bidirectional shear flow is less than the recommended value of the current vortex-induced vibration prediction software. The obtained results provide basic data for the prediction of vortex-induced vibration and research into the fatigue analysis method of a riser under an internal wave flow field.

In recent years, vortex-induced vibration (VIV) has been widely employed to collect small-scale wind energy as a renewable energy source for microelectronics and wireless sensors. In this paper, a two-degree-of-freedom (2DOF) VIV-based piezoelectric energy harvester (VIVPEH) was designed, and its aerodynamic characteristics were thoroughly investigated. First, based on the traditional model theory and combined with the knowledge of vibration dynamics, the governing equations of the 2DOF VIVPEH were established. The dynamic responses, including the displacement and voltage output, were numerically simulated. Compared with the traditional 1DOF VIVPEH, the 2DOF VIVPEH proposed in this paper produced two lock-in regions for broadband wind energy harvesting. Furthermore, it was unveiled that the first- and second-order resonances were induced in the first and lock-in regions, respectively. Subsequently, a parametric study was conducted to investigate the influences of the circuit and mechanical parameters on the energy harvesting performance of the 2DOF VIVPEH. It was found that when the 2DOF VIVPEH was induced to vibrate in different lock-in regions, its optimal resistance became different. Moreover, by varying the masses and stiffnesses of the primary and secondary DOFs, we could adjust the lock-in regions in terms of their bandwidths, locations, and amplitudes, which provides a possibility for further customization and optimization.

Fluid–structure interaction has been widely studied in the last few decades due to its wide range of applications in engineering fields. This phenomenon plays an important design role, for example, in offshore risers, high slender buildings, chimney stacks and heat exchangers. The vortex shedding generated from a bluff body can induce high-amplitude oscillations, known as vortex-induced vibrations (VIVs). This study presents a numerical analysis to investigate the impact of surface roughness on VIV in the crossflow direction of a circular cylinder. The study also investigates the impact of surface roughness with variation in mass ratio from 2.4 to 11 at a high Reynolds number (Re) = 104 using Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) equations. The study concludes that roughness on a cylinder results in a reduction in amplitude response. Furthermore, the lock-in region is narrower compared to that of a smooth cylinder, irrespective of the mass ratio. However, it is observed that the impact of surface roughness is more significant in high-mass-ratio cylinders where the lock-in region is more squeezed and shifted toward lower reduced velocities. Furthermore, the vortex mode beyond reduced velocities Ur = 5.84 and 7.52 was observed to be 2S for high and low mass ratios, respectively.

Vortex-induced vibration (VIV) is a process that wind energy converts to the mechanical energy of the bluff body. This paper investigates the dynamics of an electromagnetic vortex bladeless wind turbine (VBWT) with a tunable mechanism. The tunable mechanism comprises a progressive-rate spring that is attached to an oscillating magnet inside an electromagnetic coil. The spring stiffness is progressively adjusted as the wind speed changes to tune the turbine fundamental frequency to match the shedding frequency of the vortex-induced vibration (VIV) due to the wind flow crossing over the oscillating mast. Coupled nonlinear equations of motion of the tunable turbine are developed using the lumped-mass representation and Lagrange formulation. Numerical results show that the tunable turbine performs effectively beyond a threshold wind speed. An analytical expression of the threshold speed is derived based on the mechanical fundamental frequency of the turbine. The analytical results are in reasonable agreement with the numerical evaluations. At a given wind speed past the threshold, the tunable turbine has an optimum spring stiffness at which the output power is maximum. Numerical studies also show that the output power of the 2 m long tunable turbine is tens of times larger in comparison to a conventional bladeless turbine. For example, at a wind speed of 4.22 m/s, the output rms power of the tunable turbine is around 1105 mW versus 17 mW of the conventional VBWT. The power can be further maximized at an optimum external load. This research work demonstrated the feasibility and merits of the proposed tunable mechanism to enhance the overall performance of the bladeless wind turbine.

An alternate renewable energy source, through a piezoelectric vibration energy harvester with a bluff splitter body, could lead to higher efficiency in energy harvesting, through vortex-induced vibration at a near-resonance condition at 20 m/s high wind speed. However, wind energy is not as popular as solar energy, as the main renewable energy source in Malaysia, due to the relatively low wind speed available in the country. The INVELOX machine, introduced in 2014, was one of the most recent systems used to harvest wind power by accelerating wind speed. This omni-directional wind funnel could capture wind from all directions and tunnel it through a convergent-divergent nozzle, where the coupled bluff splitter body and piezoelectric vibration energy harvester (PVEH) are located at its venturi throat, which could lead to an increase in wind speed to fulfil the task of VIV energy harvesting. The proposed modified design is found to achieve 2.7 times the wind speed amplification at the venturi, which outperformed previously proposed designs. To achieve the optimum wind speed of 20 m/s for the coupled bluff splitter body and the PVEH plate, a free-stream wind speed of 7.4 m/s is recommended. The integration of the PVEH plate and the wind funnel is expected to harvest maximum voltage output at 20.99 V or 4.96 V, with a maximum power output of 0.82mW at 20 m/s.

In this paper, a piezoelectric and electromagnetic hybrid wind energy harvester is proposed. The general design of the harvester comprises multiple cantilever piezoelectric energy harvesters (PEHs) and electromagnetic energy harvesters (EEHs) embedded inside the bluff body that is attached to the free end of PEHs. This research work investigates utilizing the room inside the bluff body to enclose harvesters to have a more compact and efficient harvesting system. A comprehensive coupled dynamic model of the harvester (HEH) is developed using Lagrange’s formulation. The electromechanical and electromagnetic coupling coefficient equations are derived. The coupled equations of motion are solved analytically and numerically with an exact agreement. A parametric analysis is conducted to study the effect of the design parameters on the overall performance of the harvester in terms of output power and bandwidth. The proposed design evidently presents itself as a promising concept in utilizing the room inside a bluff body.

The response of an elastically mounted circular cylinder vibrating in an oscillatory flow oblique to the flow direction is investigated. Simulations are conducted for vibration angles ranging from 0° to 90°, with 0° and 90° corresponding to the cases where the vibration is inline and perpendicular to the flow direction, respectively. One mass ratio of 2, one Reynolds number of 150, and two Keulegan–Carpenter (KC) numbers of 5 and 10 and a wide range of frequency ratios that cover the lock-in regime are considered. The frequency ratio is the ratio of the oscillatory flow frequency to the natural frequency. The maximum vibration amplitude is highest when the cylinder vibrates in the flow direction (vibration angle = 0°) and gradually decreases with the increase of the vibration direction. All the identified flow regimes are mapped on the frequency ratio versus vibration angle space. In addition to the flow regimes that exist for a stationary cylinder, two variants of Regime F (F1 and F2), a new flow regime R and an unstable regime D/F are found. The vortex street directions of Regime F1 and F2 are the opposite to and the same as the direction of the vibration, respectively, Regime R is a regime where a dominant vortex circles around the cylinder and Regime D/F is an unstable regime where the flow changes between Regime D and F frequently. The contribution of the higher harmonics in the vibration increases with the increase of the vibration direction angle. As a result of the strong contribution of higher harmonics at large vibration angles and small frequency ratios, local peak values of the vibration amplitude are found at frequency ratios of 0.4 and 0.25 for KC = 5 and 10, respectively.

The effect of triple helical grooves on the suppression of vortex-induced vibration (VIV) of a circular cylinder was investigated experimentally in a wind tunnel over Reynolds number in the range of 1 × 104 < Re < 4 × 104. It was found that the helical grooves were effective in suppressing VIV with the peak amplitude reduction of approximately 36%. In addition, the lock-on region was also reduced. To explore the mechanism for the suppression of VIV, experiments on flow structures for a stationary grooved cylinder were also conducted in a wind tunnel at a free stream velocity U∞ of 4.37 m/s, corresponding to a Reynolds number based on the bare cylinder diameter of about 3500. The data were then analyzed using the phase-averaged method to evaluate the coherent vortex structures in the wakes. The results for the stationary grooved cylinder showed that the grooves weakened vortex shedding in the near wake. In addition, the grooves also reduced the drag coefficient by 6.6%. These results help explain the reduction of VIV using helical grooves.

Free-spanning submarine pipelines are usually affected by vortex-induced vibration (VIV). Such vibration could influence the liquefaction of the supporting soil at both ends of the free spans and could have catastrophic consequences, including the failure of the local seabed and the displacing, sinking, or floating of pipelines. The influence of pipeline vibration on soil liquefaction has not been studied sufficiently. Therefore, we explored the influence of vortex-induced pipeline vibration on the excess pore pressure of silty soil around a pipeline using flume experiments. Our results showed that pipeline vibration could induce the buildup of excess pore-water pressure, even without wave loading. A fully liquefied zone was found close to the pipeline, where excess pore pressure reached the soil liquefaction criterion, which was surrounded by a partially liquefied zone. The extent of liquefaction depended on the vibration conditions and the weight and burial depth of the pipeline. The pipeline vibration amplitude increased after soil liquefaction. Unlike wave-induced liquefaction, pipeline-induced vibration liquefaction occurred at a critical value smaller than the initial mean normal effective stress. Considering the possibility of pipeline-vibration-induced seabed liquefaction, conventional approaches could underestimate the potential risks to pipeline stability and result in unsafe maintenance practices.

Air velocity of coal mine ventilation is an important consideration that may cause serious damage. This paper proposes a simple, low cost and effective air velocity monitor (AVM) for coal mine ventilation. The AVM uses the lock-in characteristic of vortex-induced vibration (VIV) to sense the air velocity. Amplitude of the VIV is converted into frequency signal of a vortex-induced triboelectric nanogenerator (VI-TENG) to improve the durability. Structure of the AVM are designed, and parameters of the AVM are optimized with experiments. For the upper and lower air velocity thresholds of 3.1 and 3.6 m/s, the optimized flexible beam length, slider weight, electrode space and electrode width are 42.5 mm, 0.4 g, 0.2 mm and 0.5 mm, respectively. Experiments also show that the output frequency of the VI-TENG could represent the amplitude of VIV well with the correlation coefficient of 0.93. Durability test demonstrates that the AVM generates stable output frequency in 120,000 cycles. A prototype and its controller are fabricated. Wind tunnel tests of this prototype show that it can give alarm when the gas velocity goes above the upper threshold or below the lower threshold. The proposed AVM could be a good solution for simple and effective coal mine ventilation alarm.

Top tensioned risers (TTRs) and steel catenary risers (SCRs) have been widely used in the field of marine engineering. They are commonly used to transport fluids from subsea wells to surface platforms. Under the action of ocean currents, these risers are often subjected to vortex-induced vibrations (VIVs), which might lead to serious fatigue damage. In this study, VIV around TTR and SCR were numerically simulated using the computational fluid dynamics software FLUENT when the Reynolds number was 4000. In the calculations, the full hexahedron grid and large eddy simulation were used to ensure calculation accuracy from the boundary conditions, as well as solution control. The shape, frequency, and amplitude of VIV produced by TTRs and SCRs at different times and depths were simulated.

In this paper, fatigue analysis of oil offloading lines (OOLs) in the floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) catenary anchor leg mooring (CALM) buoy offloading system under wave and current loads in the West Africa Sea area is carried out by the numerical simulation method. The hydrodynamic coupling response is calculated, and fatigue damage is analyzed. Firstly, the numerical model is verified by comparison with the experimental results. Then, according to the environmental statistics in West Africa, the influence of various parameters on the fatigue damage of OOLs is analyzed, including tension characteristics, wave parameters, and structural parameters. Additionally, the effect of current load is studied. Results show that accumulated fatigue damage mainly occurs near the CALM buoy and is mainly caused by the 0° wind wave. Appropriately reducing the cover length of buoyancy material and increasing the wall thickness can reduce fatigue damage. Moreover, the effect of the shuttle tanker can increase the fatigue damage of the OOL near the CALM buoy by about 1.5 times, and the effect of vortex-induced vibration can increase the fatigue damage of the OOL in the middle part by up to 5–10 times.

Internal solitary waves in the South China Sea have attracted attention because of their large amplitude and high rate of occurrence. Internal solitary waves have a substantial influence on underwater sound propagation and ambient noise. However, there have seldom been reports on the noise they cause. In this paper, we conducted an internal solitary waves cooperative observation experiment in the South China Sea in 2016. We analyzed the temperature, flow velocity and noise changes induced by internal solitary waves. The power spectra of noise generated by internal solitary waves at frequencies below 100 Hz was almost 20 dB higher than ambient noise. The observed low-frequency noise had uniform harmonics. Combined with the changes of flow velocity, we interpreted the low frequency noise as flow noise induced by vortex-induced vibration of internal solitary waves flowing past the cable mooring system. The noise spectra were related to the position of the cable where the hydrophone was mounted. The closer they were to the middle of the cable, the greater the vibration amplitude, and the stronger the noise. This study provided a passive acoustic monitoring and warning method for high marine currents.

The main goal of this paper is to explore the mechanism of vortex-induced vibration (VIV) of a streamlined box girder from the perspective of flow field and pressure distribution. In this paper, using the computational fluid dynamic method, the VIV performance of fluid under specific working conditions is simulated and analyzed, especially the distribution and evolution laws of vortex structures in the whole process of VIV are studied in depth. Based on the analysis of the flow field distribution, the corresponding relationship between vortex structures and vortex-induced pressures (VIPs) is discussed. The results demonstrate that the primary cause of VIV for streamlined box girders at large attack angles is the circulation process of the massive vortex structures production and dissipation on the upper surface, rather than the alternate shedding of symmetrical vortex pairs. When vortex structures remain stable, negative VIPs rise in absolute value, negative VIPs occur when vortex structures move backward, and positive VIPs increase when vortex structures fall off.

In mountainous areas, the installation of steel towers was the major obstacle to the construction of transmission lines. In long-span cross-rope suspension (CRS) structures, the conductors are supported by hundreds-meters-long suspension cables crossing valleys instead of steel towers. Though long-span CRS is an innovative structural system, its structural performance needs to be clarified. Firstly, an assembled FE model was established based on initial deformed components for long-span cross-rope suspension structure. The wind load response of long-span cross-rope suspension structure with different lengths or number of spans was established and analyzed. Vortex-induced vibration (VIV), which was the major factor regarding fatigue and service life, and its controlling by Stockbridge damper for a long-span CRS were discussed. The numerical simulation results showed that the tensile force of the suspension cable increased with the length and number of spans of the conductor. In addition, considering the ice covering the transmission line, the interaction between the wind load and ice load induced the nonlinear lateral deformation characteristics of the conductor. Moreover, the vibration characteristics of the conductor in the long-span CRS were studied and compared with the traditional tower-line system. An analysis of the long-span CRS with a Stockbridge damper showed that additional dampers were essential for controlling the maximum dynamic bending stress of conductors at both ends.

This study is an effort to encapsulate the fundamentals and major findings in the area of fluid-solid interaction, particularly the flow-induced vibrations (FIV). Periodic flow separation and vortex shedding stretching downstream induce dynamic fluid forces on the bluff body and results in oscillatory motion of the body. The motion is generally referred to as flow-induced vibrations. FIV is a dynamic phenomenon as the motion, or the vibration of the body is subjected to the continuously changing fluid forces. Sometimes FIV is modeled as forced vibrations to mimic the vibration response due to the fluid forces. FIV is a deep concern of engineers for the design of modern heat exchangers, particularly the shell-and-tube type, as it is the major cause for the tube failures. Effect of important parameters such as Reynolds number, spacing ratio, damping coefficient, mass ratio and reduced velocity on the vibration characteristics (such as Strouhal number, vortex shedding, vibration frequency and amplitude, etc.) is summarized. Flow over a bluff body with wakes developed has been studied widely in the past decades. Several review articles are available in the literature on the area of vortex shedding and FIV. None of them, however, discusses the cases of FIV with heat transfer. In particular systems, FIV is often coupled to heat transfer, e.g., in nuclear power plants, FIV causes wear and tear to heat exchangers, which can eventually lead to catastrophic failure. As the circular shape is the most common shape for tubes and pipes encountered in practice, this review will only focus on the FIV of circular cylinders. In this attempt, FIV of single and multiple cylinders in staggered arrangement, including tandem and side-by-side arrangement is summarized for heated and unheated cylinder(s) in the one- and two-degree of freedom. The review also synthesizes the effect of fouling on heat transfer and flow characteristics. Finally, research prospects for heated circular cylinders are also stated.

This paper studies a novel enhanced energy-harvesting method to harvest water flow-induced vibration with a tandem arrangement of two piezoelectric energy harvesters (PEHs) in the direction of flowing water, through simulation modeling and experimental validation. A mathematical model is established by two individual-equivalent single-degree-of-freedom models, coupled with the hydrodynamic force obtained by computational fluid dynamics. Through the simulation analysis, the variation rules of vibration frequency, vibration amplitude, power generation and the distribution of flow field are obtained. And experimental tests are performed to verify the numerical calculation. The experimental and simulation results show that the upstream piezoelectric energy harvester (UPEH) is excited by the vortex-induced vibration, and the maximum value of performance is achieved when the UPEH and the vibration are resonant. As the vortex falls off from the UPEH, the downstream piezoelectric energy harvester (DPEH) generates a responsive beat frequency vibration. Energy-harvesting performance of the DPEH is better than that of the UPEH, especially at high speed flows. The maximum output power of the DPEH (371.7 μW) is 2.56 times of that of the UPEH (145.4 μW), at a specific spacing between the UPEN and the DPEH. Thereupon, the total output power of the two tandem piezoelectric energy harvester systems is significantly greater than that of the common single PEH, which provides a good foreground for further exploration of multiple piezoelectric energy harvesters system.

Flexible cylinders, such as marine risers, often experience sustained vortex-induced vibrations (VIVs). Installing helical strakes on a riser is the most widely used technique to mitigate VIVs. This study was inspired by the giant Saguaro Cacti which can withstand strong wind with a shallow root system. In this study, numerical simulations of flow past a stationary cylinder of a cactus-shaped cross-section in a two-dimensional flow field at a subcritical Reynolds number of 3900 were performed. Results show that cylinders of a cactus-shaped cross-section have a lower lift coefficient without increasing drag compared to those of a circular cylinder. VIV experiments on a single flexible pipe as well as on a set of two tandem-arranged flexible pipes were conducted at different reduced velocities to investigate the effects of the streamwise spacing and wake of the cactus-like body shape on VIV mitigation. Experimental results show that the cactus-like body shape can mitigate VIV responses of the cylinder at upstream position with no cost of increased drag; however, similar to helical strakes, the efficiency of VIV mitigation for the cylinder at downstream position is reduced. Although the cactus-like body shapes tested in this study were not optimized for oscillation suppression, still this study suggests that modification of the cross-sectional shape to a well-designed cactus-like shape has potentials to be used as an alternative technology to mitigate VIV of marine risers.
