Green fruit detection is of great significance for estimating orchard yield and the allocation of water and fertilizer. However, due to the similar colors of green fruit and the background of images, the complexity of backgrounds and the difficulty in collecting green fruit datasets, there is currently no accurate and convenient green fruit detection method available for small datasets. The YOLO object detection model, a representative of the single-stage detection framework, has the advantages of a flexible structure, fast inference speed and excellent versatility. In this study, we proposed a model based on the improved YOLOv5 model that combined data augmentation methods to detect green fruit in a small dataset with a background of similar color. In the improved YOLOv5 model (YOLOv5-AT), a Conv-AT block and SA and CA blocks were designed to construct feature information from different perspectives and improve the accuracy by conveying local key information to the deeper layer. The proposed method was applied to green oranges, green tomatoes and green persimmons, and the mAPs were higher than those of other YOLO object detection models, reaching 84.6%, 98.0% and 85.1%, respectively. Furthermore, taking green oranges as an example, a mAP of 82.2% was obtained on the basis of retaining 50% of the original dataset (163 images), which was only 2.4% lower than that obtained when using 100% of the dataset (326 images) for training. Thus, the YOLOv5-AT model combined with data augmentation methods can effectively achieve accurate detection in small green fruit datasets under a similar color background. These research results could provide supportive data for improving the efficiency of agricultural production.

Background: Acute Bilirubin Encephalopathy (ABE) is a major cause of infant mortality and disability, making early detection and treatment essential to prevent further progression and complications. Methods: To enhance the diagnostic capabilities of multi-modal Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) for ABE, we proposed a deep learning model integrating an attention module (AM) with a central network (CentralNet). This model was tested on MRI data from 145 newborns diagnosed with ABE and 140 non-ABE newborns, utilizing both T1-weighted and T2-weighted images. Results: The findings indicated the following: (1) In single-modality experiments, the inclusion of AM significantly improved all the performance metrics compared to the models without AM. Specifically, for T1-weighted MRI, the accuracy was 0.639 ± 0.04, AUC was 0.682 ± 0.037, and sensitivity was 0.688 ± 0.09. For the T2-weighted images, the accuracy was 0.738 ± 0.039 and the AUC was 0.796 ± 0.025. (2) In multi-modal experiments, using T1 + T2 images, our model achieved the best accuracy of 0.845 ± 0.018, AUC of 0.913 ± 0.02, and sensitivity of 0.954 ± 0.069, compared to models without an AM and CentralNet. The specificity remained relatively stable, while the precision and F1 scores significantly increased, reaching 0.792 ± 0.048 and 0.862 ± 0.017, respectively. Conclusions: This study emphasizes the effectiveness of combining attention modules with CentralNet, significantly enhancing the accuracy of multi-modal MRI in classifying ABE. It presents a new perspective and possibility for the clinical application of multi-modal MRI imaging in the diagnosis of ABE.

Due to the limited classification ability of single-modal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), this study aimed to validate the classification performance of a new deep learning model based on multimodal MRI images. Additionally, the study evaluated the effect of a spatial attention module (SAM) on improving the model’s diagnostic performance in distinguishing ABE. Methods: This study enrolled a total of 97 neonates diagnosed with ABE and 80 neonates diagnosed with hyperbilirubinemia (HB, non-ABE). Each patient underwent three types of multimodal imaging, which included T1-weighted imaging (T1WI), T2-weighted imaging (T2WI), and an apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) map. A multimodal MRI classification model based on the ResNet18 network with spatial attention modules was built to distinguish ABE from non-ABE. All combinations of the three types of images were used as inputs to test the model’s classification performance, and we also analyzed the prediction performance of models with SAMs through comparative experiments. Results: The results indicated that the diagnostic performance of the multimodal image combination was better than any single-modal image, and the combination of T1WI and T2WI achieved the best classification performance (accuracy = 0.808 ± 0.069, area under the curve = 0.808 ± 0.057). The ADC images performed the worst among the three modalities’ images. Adding spatial attention modules significantly improved the model’s classification performance. Conclusion: Our experiment showed that a multimodal image classification network with spatial attention modules significantly improved the accuracy of ABE classification.

In recent years, with the extensive application of deep learning in images, the task of remote sensing image change detection has witnessed a significant improvement. Several excellent methods based on Convolutional Neural Networks and emerging transformer-based methods have achieved impressive accuracy. However, Convolutional Neural Network-based approaches have difficulties in capturing long-range dependencies because of their natural limitations in effective receptive field acquisition unless deeper networks are employed, introducing other drawbacks such as an increased number of parameters and loss of shallow information. The transformer-based methods can effectively learn the relationship between different regions, but the computation is inefficient. Thus, in this paper, a multi-scale feature aggregation via transformer (MFATNet) is proposed for remote sensing image change detection. To obtain a more accurate change map after learning the intra-relationships of feature maps at different scales through the transformer, MFATNet aggregates the multi-scale features. Moreover, the Spatial Semantic Tokenizer (SST) is introduced to obtain refined semantic tokens before feeding into the transformer structure to make it focused on learning more crucial pixel relationships. To fuse low-level features (more fine-grained localization information) and high-level features (more accurate semantic information), and to alleviate the localization and semantic gap between high and low features, the Intra- and Inter-class Channel Attention Module (IICAM) are integrated to further determine more convincing change maps. Extensive experiments are conducted on LEVIR-CD, WHU-CD, and DSIFN-CD datasets. Intersection over union (IoU) of 82.42 and F1 score of 90.36, intersection over union (IoU) of 79.08 and F1 score of 88.31, intersection over union (IoU) of 77.98 and F1 score of 87.62, respectively, are achieved. The experimental results achieved promising performance compared to certain previous state-of-the-art change detection methods.

Concomitant with the recent advances in deep learning, automatic speech recognition and visual speech recognition (VSR) have received considerable attention. However, although VSR systems must identify speech from both frontal and profile faces in real-world scenarios, most VSR studies have focused solely on frontal face pictures. To address this issue, we propose an end-to-end sentence-level multi-view VSR architecture for faces captured from four different perspectives (frontal, 30°, 45°, and 60°). The encoder uses multiple convolutional neural networks with a spatial attention module to detect minor changes in the mouth patterns of similarly pronounced words, and the decoder uses cascaded local self-attention connectionist temporal classification to collect the details of local contextual information in the immediate vicinity, which results in a substantial performance boost and speedy convergence. To compare the performance of the proposed model for experiments on the OuluVS2 dataset, the dataset was divided into four different perspectives, and the obtained performance improvement was 3.31% (0°), 4.79% (30°), 5.51% (45°), 6.18% (60°), and 4.95% (mean), respectively, compared with the existing state-of-the-art performance, and the average performance improved by 9.1% compared with the baseline. Thus, the suggested design enhances the performance of multi-view VSR and boosts its usefulness in real-world applications.

One essential step in radiotherapy treatment planning is the organ at risk of segmentation in Computed Tomography (CT). Many recent studies have focused on several organs such as the lung, heart, esophagus, trachea, liver, aorta, kidney, and prostate. However, among the above organs, the esophagus is one of the most difficult organs to segment because of its small size, ambiguous boundary, and very low contrast in CT images. To address these challenges, we propose a fully automated framework for the esophagus segmentation from CT images. The proposed method is based on the processing of slice images from the original three-dimensional (3D) image so that our method does not require large computational resources. We employ the spatial attention mechanism with the atrous spatial pyramid pooling module to locate the esophagus effectively, which enhances the segmentation performance. To optimize our model, we use group normalization because the computation is independent of batch sizes, and its performance is stable. We also used the simultaneous truth and performance level estimation (STAPLE) algorithm to reach robust results for segmentation. Firstly, our model was trained by k-fold cross-validation. And then, the candidate labels generated by each fold were combined by using the STAPLE algorithm. And as a result, Dice and Hausdorff Distance scores have an improvement when applying this algorithm to our segmentation results. Our method was evaluated on SegTHOR and StructSeg 2019 datasets, and the experiment shows that our method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods in esophagus segmentation. Our approach shows a promising result in esophagus segmentation, which is still challenging in medical analyses.

The automatic detection of aircrafts from SAR images is widely applied in both military and civil fields, but there are still considerable challenges. To address the high variety of aircraft sizes and complex background information in SAR images, a new fast detection framework based on convolution neural networks is proposed, which achieves automatic and rapid detection of aircraft with high accuracy. First, the airport runway areas are detected to generate the airport runway mask and rectangular contour of the whole airport are generated. Then, a new deep neural network proposed in this paper, named Efficient Weighted Feature Fusion and Attention Network (EWFAN), is used to detect aircrafts. EWFAN integrates the weighted feature fusion module, the spatial attention mechanism, and the CIF loss function. EWFAN can effectively reduce the interference of negative samples and enhance feature extraction, thereby significantly improving the detection accuracy. Finally, the airport runway mask is applied to the detected results to reduce false alarms and produce the final aircraft detection results. To evaluate the performance of the proposed framework, large-scale Gaofen-3 SAR images with 1 m resolution are utilized in the experiment. The detection rate and false alarm rate of our EWFAN algorithm are 95.4% and 3.3%, respectively, which outperforms Efficientdet and YOLOv4. In addition, the average test time with the proposed framework is only 15.40 s, indicating satisfying efficiency of automatic aircraft detection.
