The exponential demand for real-time monitoring applications has altered the course of sensor development, from sensor electronics miniaturization, e.g., resorting to printing techniques, to low-cost, flexible and functional wearable materials. Humidity sensing has been used in the prevention and diagnosis of medical conditions, as well as in the assessment of physical comfort. This paper presents a resistive flexible humidity sensor composed of silver interdigitated electrodes (IDTs) screen printed onto polyimide film and an active layer of multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) dispersed in a water-soluble polymer, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). Different MWCNT/PVA sensor sizes and MWCNT percentages are tested to study their effect on the initial electrical resistance (Ri) values and sensor response at different humidity percentages. The results show that the Ri values decrease with the increase in % MWCNT. The sensor size did not influence the sensor response, while the % MWCNT affected the sensor behavior upon relative humidity (RH) increments. The 1% MWCNT/PVA sensor showed the best response, reaching a relative electrical resistance, ΔR/R0, of 509% at 99% RH. Comparable with other reported sensors, the produced MWCNT/PVA flexible sensor is simpler, greener and shows a good sensitivity to humidity, being easily incorporated in wearable monitoring applications, from sports to medical fields.

For this article, a low-cost, compact, and flexible inkjet-printed electromagnetic sensor was investigated for its chemical and biomedical applications. The investigated sensor design was used to estimate variations in the concentration of chemicals (ethanol and methanol) and biochemicals (hydrocortisone—a chemical derivative of cortisol, a biomarker of stress and cardiovascular effects). The proposed design’s sensitivity was further improved by carefully choosing the frequency range (0.5–4 GHz), so that the analyzed samples showed approximately linear variations in their dielectric properties. The dielectric properties were measured using a vector network analyzer (VNA) and an Agilent 85070E Dielectric Probe Kit. The sensor design had a resonant frequency at 2.2 GHz when investigated without samples, and a consistent shift in resonant frequency was observed, with variation in the concentrations of the investigated chemicals. The sensitivity of the designed sensor is decent and is comparable to its non-flexible counterparts. Furthermore, the simulation and measured results were in agreement and were comparable to similar investigated sensor prototypes based on non-flexible Rogers substrates (Rogers RO4003C) and Rogers Droid/RT 5880), demonstrating true potential for chemical, biomedical applications, and healthcare.

A multifunctional sensor comprising flexible and transparent ultraviolet (UV) photodetectors (PDs) with strain gauges based on Ag nanowire (AgNW)@ZnO nanorods (ZnONRs) was fabricated using a cost-effective, simple, and efficient method. High-aspect ratio silver nanowires were synthesized using the polyol method. An AgNW@ZnONR composite was formed via the hydrothermal method to ensure the multifunctional capability of the flexible sensors. After refining the process parameters, the size of the ZnO nanorods was decreased to fabricate pliable multifunctional sensors using AgNW@ZnONRs. At a deposition of 0.207 g of AgNW@ZnONRs, the sensor achieves its maximum switching ratio and fastest response time under conditions of 2000 μW/cm2 UV optical power density. With a ton (rise time) of 2.7 s and a toff (fall time) of 2.3 s, the ratio of Ion to Ioff current is 1151. Additionally, the sensor’s maximum optical current value correlates linearly with UV light’s power density. The maximum response current increased from 222.5 pA to 588.1 pA, an increase of 164.3%, when the bending angle was increased from 15° to 90° for the sensor with a deposition of 0.276 g of AgNW@ZnONRs. There was no degradation in the response of the sensors after 10,000 bending cycles, as they have excellent stability and repeatability, which means they can meet the requirements of wearable sensor applications. Therefore, there is great potential for the practical application of multifunctional AgNW@ZnONRs in flexible sensors.

Metasurface absorbers (MSAs) are of significant importance in a wide range of applications, such as in the field of stealth technology. Nevertheless, conventional designs demonstrate limited flexible characteristics and a lack of transparency, hence constraining their suitability for certain radar stealth applications. This study introduces a novel MSA operating in the broad microwave range, which exhibits both optical transparency and flexibility. The structure consists of a flexible substrate made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), along with a resistive film composed of indium tin oxide (ITO). The proposed structure exhibits the ability to effectively absorb over 90% of the energy carried by incident electromagnetic (EM) waves across the frequency range of 9.85–41.76 GHz within an angular range of 0° to 60°. In addition, to assess the efficacy of the absorption performance, an examination of the radar cross-section (RCS) characteristics is conducted. The results indicate a reduction of over 10 dB across the aforementioned broad frequency spectrum, regardless of the central angle.

Vibration sensors are widely applied in the detection of faults and analysis of operational states in engineering machinery and equipment. However, commercial vibration sensors with a feature of high hardness hinder their usage in some practical applications where the measured objects have irregular surfaces that are difficult to install. Moreover, as the operating environments of machinery become increasingly complex, there is a growing demand for sensors capable of working in wet and humid conditions. Here, we present a flexible, superhydrophobic vibration sensor with parallel microcracks. The sensor is fabricated using a femtosecond laser direct writing ablation strategy to create the parallel cracks on a PDMS film, followed by spray-coating with a conductive ink composed of MWCNTs, CB, and PDMS. The results demonstrate that the developed flexible sensor exhibits a high-frequency response of up to 2000 Hz, a high acceleration response of up to 100 m/s2, a water contact angle as high as 159.61°, and a linearity of 0.9812 between the voltage signal and acceleration. The results indicate that the sensor can be employed for underwater vibration, sound recognition, and vibration monitoring in fields such as shield cutters, holding significant potential for mechanical equipment vibration monitoring and speech-based human–machine interaction.

To investigate the impact of electrode structure on Electrical Stimulation Therapy (EST) for chronic wound healing, this study designed three variants of flexible microelectrodes (FMs) with Ag-Cu coverings (ACCs), each exhibiting distinct geometrical configurations: hexagonal, cross-shaped, and serpentine. These were integrated with PPY/PDA/PANI (3/6) (full name: polypyrrole/polydopamine/polyaniline 3/6). Hydrogel dressing comprehensive animal studies, coupled with detailed electrical and mechanical modeling and simulations, were conducted to assess their performance. Results indicated that the serpentine-shaped FM outperformed its counterparts in terms of flexibility and safety, exhibiting minimal thermal effects and a reduced risk of burns. Notably, FMs with metal coverings under 3% demonstrated promising potential for optoelectronic self-powering capabilities. Additionally, simulation data highlighted the significant influence of hydrogel non-uniformity on the distribution of electrical properties across the skin surface, providing critical insights for optimizing EST protocols when employing hydrogel dressings.

A Mullins simulation was conducted to analyze the effects of loading and unloading of a flexible-type SEGE coupling with a nominal torque of Tnom=80 Nm and maximum torque of Tmax=120 Nm. The coupling’s properties were determined by examining its moment characteristics at T=120, 100, 80, 60, 40, and 20 Nm. The correlation between the Mullins effect results obtained from the SEGE coupling load simulation via SolidWorks 2022 software and the actual experimental data was examined.

This study explores the development and performance of bistable materials, emphasizing their potential applications in aero-vehicles and high-stress environments. By integrating soft and hard materials within a composite structure, the research demonstrates the creation of bistable composites that exhibit remarkable flexibility and rigidity. Advanced simulations using COMSOL Multiphysics and 3D-printed prototypes reveal that these materials effectively absorb and dissipate stress, maintaining structural integrity under high-pressure conditions. Compression tests highlight the ability of bistable structures to bear significant loads, distributing stress efficiently across multiple layers. The innovative proposal of combining stiff and flexible materials within a single unit cell enhances bistable behavior, offering superior energy absorption and resilience. This work underscores the promise of bistable materials in advancing materials science, providing robust solutions for aerospace, automotive, and protective gear applications and paving the way for future research in optimizing bistable structures for diverse engineering challenges.

Mechanical energy harvesters made from soft and flexible materials can be employed as energy sources for wearable and implantable devices. However, considering how human organs and joints expand and bend in many directions, the energy generated in response to a mechanical stimulus in only one direction limits the applicability of mechanical energy harvesters. Here, we report carbon nanotube (CNT) sheets/an elastomer bilayer harvesting electrode (CBHE) that converts two-axis mechanical stimulation into electrical energy. The novel microwinkled structure of the CBHE successfully demonstrates an electrochemical double-layer (EDL) capacitance change from biaxial mechanical stimulation, thereby generating electrical power (0.11 W kg−1). Additionally, the low modulus (0.16 MPa) and high deformability due to the elastomeric substrate suggest that the CBHE can be applied to the human body.

pH regulation in human biofluids is a crucial step for disease diagnosis and health monitoring. Traditional pH sensors are limited by their bulky size in wearable systems, and fragile glass tips require frequent calibration, thus limiting their use in continuous monitoring. Flexible sensors, particularly those utilizing microwires and thread-based substrates, present advantages for small sample analysis, including natural breathability and suitability for bandage or textile integration. This study examines iridium oxide and silver–silver chloride coated on thin gold wires, fabricated using sol–gel and dip-coating processes known for their simplicity. The flexible microwires demonstrated promising pH performance from a study of their pH characteristics, sensitivity, hysteresis, and potential drift. Electrodes tested in microwells allowed for small sample volumes and localized pH measurement in a controlled environment. Additional integration into fabrics for sweat sensing in wearables highlighted their potential for continuous, real-time health monitoring applications.

Thermoelectric (TE) materials are capable of realizing the direct conversion between heat and electricity, holding a giant prospect in the sustainable development of modern society. Conductive polymers (CPs) are suitable for the preparation of TE materials given their low-cost, lightweight, flexible, and easy processing properties. With the accelerating pace of flexible composite development, there is intensive interest in their emerging applications in various aspects such as wearable electronics and thermoelectric sensors. In order to further improve the thermoelectric properties, a series of new methods have been proposed to prepare conductive polymer-based thermoelectric composites and improve their thermoelectric properties. In this review, we discuss the compositing methods, properties, and applications of conductive polymer-based TE composites. The challenges and future development directions in the design and application of conductive polymer matrix composites are also pointed out.

Human–machine interactions (HMIs) have penetrated into various academic and industrial fields, such as robotics, virtual reality, and wearable electronics. However, the practical application of most human–machine interfaces faces notable obstacles due to their complex structure and materials, high power consumption, limited effective skin adhesion, and high cost. Herein, we report a self-powered, skin adhesive, and flexible human–machine interface based on a triboelectric nanogenerator (SSFHMI). Characterized by its simple structure and low cost, the SSFHMI can easily convert touch stimuli into a stable electrical signal at the trigger pressure from a finger touch, without requiring an external power supply. A skeleton spacer has been specially designed in order to increase the stability and homogeneity of the output signals of each TENG unit and prevent crosstalk between them. Moreover, we constructed a hydrogel adhesive interface with skin-adhesive properties to adapt to easy wear on complex human body surfaces. By integrating the SSFHMI with a microcontroller, a programmable touch operation platform has been constructed that is capable of multiple interactions. These include medical calling, music media playback, security unlocking, and electronic piano playing. This self-powered, cost-effective SSFHMI holds potential relevance for the next generation of highly integrated and sustainable portable smart electronic products and applications.

Temperature can reflect vital activities, and researchers have attempted to guide Chinese medicine diagnosis and treatment by observing acupoint temperature changes. Integrating a temperature sensor at the needle tip enables in situ acupoint temperature measurement. However, the sensor needles for acupoint temperature monitoring designed in previous studies were fabricated by manually soldering thermistor beads and metal wires, making mass production difficult. In this work, using MEMS manufacturing technology, a flexible temperature sensor that can be integrated at the needle tip is proposed and can be mass-produced on silicon wafers. The sensor uses a Pt thermistor as the temperature-sensing element and has a slender flexible structure with dimensions of 125 μm width by 3.2 cm length. As the sensor is inserted into a hollow needle, the Pt thermistor is glued to the needle tip. In the temperature range of 30 °C to 50 °C, the fabricated temperature sensor has a sensitivity of 5.00 Ω∙°C−1, a nonlinearity of ±0.39%FS, and a repeatability error of ±2.62%FS. Additionally, the sensor has been applied to in vivo acupoint temperature monitoring experiments in rats and demonstrated good performance, suggesting its promise for future research on acupoint temperature.

To obtain a high-performance extended gate field-effect transistor for pH detection, hafnium nitride (HfN) was first fabricated on an indium tin oxide on polyethylene terephthalate (ITO/PET) substrate using a high-power impulse magnetron sputter system (HiPIMS) in this study. It can be easily applied in biomedical diagnostic and environmental monitoring applications with the advantages of flexible, disposable, cost-effective, and reliable components. Various duty cycle conditions in HiPIMSs were designed to investigate the corresponding sensing performance and material properties including surface morphology and composition. As the duty cycle increased, the grain size of HfN increased. Additionally, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis illustrated the presence of HfOxNy on the deposited HfN surface. Both behaviors could result in a better pH sensing performance based on the theory of the site-binding model. Subsequently, HfN with a 15% duty cycle exhibited excellent pH sensitivity and linearity, with values of 59.3 mV/pH and 99.8%, respectively; its hysteresis width and drift coefficient were −1 mV and 0.5 mV/h, respectively. Furthermore, this pH-sensing performance remained stable even after 2000 repeated bending cycles. These results indicate the potential and feasibility of this HiPIMS-deposited HfN for future wearable chemical applications.

The rapid advancement of wearable devices and flexible electronics has spurred an increasing need for high-performance, thin, lightweight, and flexible energy storage devices. In particular, thin and lightweight zinc-ion batteries require battery materials that possess exceptional flexibility and mechanical stability to accommodate complex deformations often encountered in flexible device applications. Moreover, the development of compact and thin battery structures is essential to minimize the overall size and weight while maintaining excellent electrochemical performance, including high energy density, long cycle life, and stable charge/discharge characteristics, to ensure their versatility across various applications. Researchers have made significant strides in enhancing the battery’s performance by optimizing crucial components such as electrode materials, electrolytes, separators, and battery structure. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of the design principles essential for achieving thinness in zinc-ion batteries, along with a summary of the preparation methods and potential applications of these batteries. Moreover, it delves into the challenges associated with achieving thinness in zinc-ion batteries and proposes effective countermeasures to address these hurdles. This review concludes by offering insights into future developments in this field, underscoring the continual advancements and innovations that can be expected.

Strain sensors that can rapidly and efficiently detect strain distribution and magnitude are crucial for structural health monitoring and human–computer interactions. However, traditional electrical and optical strain sensors make access to structural health information challenging because data conversion is required, and they have intricate, delicate designs. Drawing inspiration from the moisture-responsive coloration of beetle wing sheaths, we propose using Ecoflex as a flexible substrate. This substrate is coated with a Fabry–Perot (F–P) optical structure, comprising a “reflective layer/stretchable interference cavity/reflective layer”, creating a dynamic color-changing visual strain sensor. Upon the application of external stress, the flexible interference chamber of the sensor stretches and contracts, prompting a blue-shift in the structural reflection curve and displaying varying colors that correlate with the applied strain. The innovative flexible sensor can be attached to complex-shaped components, enabling the visual detection of structural integrity. This biomimetic visual strain sensor holds significant promise for real-time structural health monitoring applications.

Flexible and binderless electrodes have become a promising candidate for the next generation of flexible power storage devices. However, developing high-performance electrode materials with high energy density and a long cycle life remains a serious challenge for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). The main issue is the large volume change in electrode materials during the cycling processes, leading to rapid capacity decay for SIBs. In this study, flexible electrodes for a SnSb alloy–carbon nanofiber (SnSb@NC) membrane were successfully synthesized with the aid of hydrothermal, electrospinning and annealing processes. The as-prepared binderless SnSb@NC flexible anodes were investigated for the storage properties of SIBs at 500 °C, 600 °C and 700 °C (SnSb@NC-500, SnSb@NC-600 and SnSb@NC-700), respectively. And the flexible SnSb@NC-700 electrode displayed the preferable SIB performances, achieving 240 mAh/g after 100 cycles at 0.1 A g−1. In degree-dependent I-V curve measurements, the SnSb@NC-700 membrane exhibited almost the same current at different bending degrees of 0°, 45°, 90°, 120° and 175°, indicating the outstanding mechanical properties of the flexible binderless electrodes.

In this work, flexible Cu2−xS films on nylon membranes are prepared by combining a simple hydrothermal synthesis and vacuum filtration followed by hot pressing. The films consist of Cu2S and Cu1.96S two phases with grain sizes from nano to submicron. Doping Se on the S site not only increases the Cu1.96S content in the Cu2−xS to increase carrier concentration but also modifies electronic structure, thereby greatly improves the electrical properties of the Cu2−xS. Specifically, an optimal composite film with a nominal composition of Cu2−xS0.98Se0.02 exhibits a high power factor of ~150.1 μW m−1 K−2 at 300 K, which increases by ~138% compared to that of the pristine Cu2−xS film. Meanwhile, the composite film shows outstanding flexibility (~97.2% of the original electrical conductivity is maintained after 1500 bending cycles with a bending radius of 4 mm). A four-leg flexible thermoelectric (TE) generator assembled with the optimal film generates a maximum power of 329.6 nW (corresponding power density of 1.70 W m−2) at a temperature difference of 31.1 K. This work provides a simple route to the preparation of high TE performance Cu2−xS-based films.

This research contributes to work on synthesizing zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) at room temperature (RT) and their utilization in flexible gas sensors. RT ZnO NP synthesis with a basicity solution (pH ≈ 13) demonstrates an efficient method for synthesizing well-crystalline ZnO NPs (RT.pH13) comparable to those synthesized by the hydrothermal method (hyd.C). The RT.pH13 achieved a high thermal stability with minimal organic reside impurities (~4.2 wt%), 30–80 nm particle size distribution, and a specific surface area (14 m2 g−1). The synthesized pre- and post-calcinated RT.pH13 NPs were then incorporated into flexible sensors for gas sensing applications at ambient conditions (RT and relative humidity of 30–50%). The pre-calcinated ZnO-based sensor (RT.pH13) demonstrated superior sensitivity to styrene and acetic acid and lower sensitivity to dimethyl-6-octenal. The calcinated ZnO-based sensor (RT.pH13.C) exhibited lower sensitivity to styrene and acetic acid, but heightened sensitivity to benzene, acetone, and ethanol. This suggests a correlation between sensitivity and structural transformations following calcination. The investigation of the sensing mechanisms highlighted the role of surface properties in the sensors’ affinity for specific gas molecules and temperature and humidity variations. The study further explored the sensors’ mechanical flexibility, which is crucial for flexible Internet of Things (IoT) applications.

The utilization of triboelectric materials has gained considerable attention in recent years, offering a sustainable approach to energy harvesting and sensing technologies. Biomass-derived materials, owing to their abundance, renewability, and biocompatibility, offer promising avenues for enhancing the performance and versatility of triboelectric devices. This paper explores the synthesis and characterization of biomass-derived materials, their integration into triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), and their applications in energy harvesting, self-powered sensors, and environmental monitoring. This review presents an overview of the emerging field of advanced triboelectric applications that utilize the unique properties of biomass-derived materials. Additionally, it addresses the challenges and opportunities in employing biomass-derived materials for triboelectric applications, emphasizing the potential for sustainable and eco-friendly energy solutions.

Nanocomposites are materials of special interest for the development of flexible electronic, optical, and mechanical devices in applications such as transparent conductive electrodes and flexible electronic sensors. These materials take advantage of the electrical, chemical, and mechanical properties of a polymeric matrix, especially in force sensors, as well as the properties of a conductive filler such as silver nanowires (AgNWs). In this work, the fabrication of a force sensor using AgNWs synthesized via the polyol chemical technique is presented. The nanowires were deposited via drop-casting in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) to form the active (electrode) and resistive (nanocomposite) sensor films, with both films separated by a cellulose acetate substrate. The dimensions of the resulting sensor are 35 mm × 40 mm × 0.1 mm. The sensor shows an applied force ranging from 0 to 3.92 N, with a sensitivity of 0.039 N. The sensor stand-off resistance, exceeding 50 MΩ, indicates a good ability to detect changes in applied force without an external force. Additionally, studies revealed a response time of 10 ms, stabilization of 9 s, and a degree of hysteresis of 1.9%. The voltage response of the sensor under flexion at an angle of 85° was measured, demonstrating its functionality over a prolonged period. The fabricated sensor can be used in applications that require measuring pressure on irregular surfaces or systems with limited space, such as for estimating movement in robot joints.

Ammonia (NH3) is a harmful atmospheric pollutant and an important indicator of environment, health, and food safety conditions. Wearable devices with flexible gas sensors offer convenient real-time NH3 monitoring capabilities. A flexible ammonia gas sensing system to support the internet of things (IoT) is proposed. The flexible gas sensor in this system utilizes polyaniline (PANI) with multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) decoration as a sensitive material, coated on a silver interdigital electrode on a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate. Gas sensors are combined with other electronic components to form a flexible electronic system. The IoT functionality of the system comes from a microcontroller with Wi-Fi capability. The flexible gas sensor demonstrates commendable sensitivity, selectivity, humidity resistance, and long lifespan. The experimental data procured from the sensor reveal a remarkably low detection threshold of 0.3 ppm, aligning well with the required specifications for monitoring ammonia concentrations in exhaled breath gas, which typically range from 0.425 to 1.8 ppm. Furthermore, the sensor demonstrates a negligible reaction to the presence of interfering gases, such as ethanol, acetone, and methanol, thereby ensuring high selectivity for ammonia detection. In addition to these attributes, the sensor maintains consistent stability across a range of environmental conditions, including varying humidity levels, repeated bending cycles, and diverse angles of orientation. A portable, stable, and effective flexible IoT system solution for real-time ammonia sensing is demonstrated by collecting data at the edge end, processing the data in the cloud, and displaying the data at the user end.

Beam pumping units have numerous energy transfer links, significant net torque fluctuations and negative net torque in gear boxes, which lead to a high installed power and low system efficiency. In order to improve the efficiency of the pumping unit, in this paper, an eccentric balanced positive torque pump unit was designed based on the principle of eccentric balance that is small in size and adopts a flexible energy transfer system instead of a rigid structure to significantly reduce the energy transfer link. The kinematics and dynamics of the eccentric balanced positive torque pumping unit were analyzed and the ability to operate with positive torque over the entire cycle was verified using theoretical computations. And the results of the theoretical calculation were verified by using the virtual prototype simulation and analysis software ADAMS (Automatic Dynamic Analysis of Mechanical Systems); the pumping unit was optimized for relevant parameters such as the balance crank angle λ and the counterweight center of mass offset angle δ. Indoor testing and comparative field application have demonstrated that the installed power has been reduced by 80%, the weight of the entire prototype has decreased by 25% and the system efficiency has reached 24.3%. Additionally, electricity savings of over 50% have been achieved. These results indicate that the pumping unit has been designed correctly, has high reliability and has significantly improved system efficiency while also providing an obvious energy-saving effect.

Flexible supercapacitors (FSCs) with high electrochemical and mechanical performance are inevitably necessary for the fabrication of integrated wearable systems. Conducting polymers with intrinsic conductivity and flexibility are ideal active materials for FSCs. However, they suffer from poor cycling stability due to huge volume variations during operation cycles. Two-dimensional (2D) materials play a critical role in FSCs, but restacking and aggregation limit their practical application. Nanocomposites of conducting polymers and 2D materials can mitigate the above-mentioned drawbacks. This review presents the recent progress of those nanocomposites for FSCs. It aims to provide insights into the assembling strategies of the macroscopic structures of those nanocomposites, such as 1D fibers, 2D films, and 3D aerogels/hydrogels, as well as the fabrication methods to convert these macroscopic structures to FSCs with different device configurations. The practical applications of FSCs based on those nanocomposites in integrated self-powered sensing systems and future perspectives are also discussed.

The three-dimensional (3D) force sensor has become essential in industrial and medical applications. The existing conventional 3D force sensors quantify the three-direction force components at a point of interest or extended contact area. However, they are typically made of rigid, complex structures and expensive materials, making them hard to implement in different soft or fixable industrial and medical applications. In this work, a new flexible 3D force sensor based on polymer nanocomposite (PNC) sensing elements was proposed and tested for its sensitivity to forces in the 3D space. Multi-walled carbon nanotube/polyvinylidene fluoride (MWCNT/PVDF) sensing element films were fabricated using the spray coating technique. The MWCNTs play an essential role in strain sensitivity in the sensing elements. They have been utilized for internal strain measurements of the fixable 3D force sensor’s structure in response to 3D forces. The MWCNT/PVDF was selected for its high sensitivity and capability to measure high and low-frequency forces. Four sensing elements were distributed into a cross-beam structure configuration, the most typically used solid 3D force sensor. Then, the sensing elements were inserted between two silicone rubber layers to enhance the sensor’s flexibility. The developed sensor was tested under different static and dynamic loading scenarios and exhibited excellent sensitivity and ability to distinguish between tension and compression force directions. The proposed sensor can be implemented in vast applications, including soft robotics and prostheses’ internal forces of patients with limb amputations.

This article presents an in-depth investigation of wearable microwave antenna sensors (MASs) used for vital sign detection (VSD) and lung water level (LWL) monitoring. The study looked at two different types of MASs, narrowband (NB) and ultra-wideband (UWB), to decide which one was better. Unlike recent wearable respiratory sensors, these antennas are simple in design, low-profile, and affordable. The narrowband sensor employs an offset-feed microstrip transmission line, which has a bandwidth of 240 MHz at −10 dB reflection coefficient for the textile substrate. The UWB microwave sensor uses a CPW-fed line to excite an unbalanced U-shaped radiator, offering an extended simulated operating bandwidth from 1.5 to 10 GHz with impedance matching ≤−10 dB. Both types of microwave sensors are designed on a flexible RO 3003 substrate and textile conductive fabric attached to a cotton substrate. The specific absorption rate (SAR) of the sensors is measured at different resonant frequencies on 1 g and 10 g of tissue, according to the IEEE C95.3 standard, and both sensors meet the standard limit of 1.6 W/kg and 2 W/kg, respectively. A simple peak-detection algorithm is used to demonstrate high accuracy in the detection of respiration, heartbeat, and lung water content. Based on the experimental results on a child and an adult volunteer, it can be concluded that UWB MASs offer superior performance when compared to NB sensors.

This paper proposed a single-layer checkerboard metasurface with simultaneous wideband radar cross-section (RCS) reduction characteristics and low infrared (IR) emissivity. The metasurface consists of an indium tin oxide (ITO)-patterned film, a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate and an ITO backplane from the top downwards, with a total ultra-thin thickness of 1.6 mm. This design also allows the metasurface to have good optical transparency and flexibility. Based on phase cancellation and absorption, the metasurface can achieve a wideband RCS reduction of 10 dB from 10.6 to 19.4 GHz under normal incidence. When the metasurface is slightly cylindrically curved, an RCS reduction of approximately 10 dB can still be achieved from 11 to 19 GHz. The polarization and angular stability of the metasurface have also been verified. The filling rate of the top ITO-patterned film is 0.81, which makes the metasurface have a low theoretical IR emissivity of 0.24. Both simulation and experimental results have verified the excellent characteristics of the proposed checkerboard metasurface, demonstrating its great potential application in radar–IR bi-stealth.

Rotational nanogenerators with flexible triboelectric layers have wide applications and high reliability. However, flexible materials cause a severe reduction in contact force and thus triboelectric output power. Unlike previous works devising complex auxiliary structures to solve this issue, this paper focuses on improving the contact material mechanics and proposes a stiffness modulation method. By introducing fine patterns to the contacting rotor–stator pairs, the effective elastic modulus was regulated from approximately 103 to 105 MPa, and the output voltage was modulated from approximately 24.39% to 375.87% compared to the non-patterned rotor–stator pairs, corresponding to a maximal a 14 times increase in output power. A maximal power density of 18.75 W/m2 was achieved on 10 MΩ resistance at 9.6 Hz, which is even beyond the power density of most rigid triboelectric interfaces. Moreover, high reliability could be maintained when the volume ratio of the horizontal patterns exceeded a threshold value of 33.5% as the stator and 63.6% as the rotor for a 0.5 mm linewidth. These results prove the efficacy of the stiffness modulation method for jointly achieving high output power and high reliability in flexible rotational triboelectric nanogenerators.

This review focuses on nanovesicular carriers for enhanced delivery of molecules into and across the skin, from their design to recent emerging technologies. During the last four decades, several approaches have been used aiming to design new nanovesicles, some of them by altering the properties of the classic phospholipid vesicle, the liposome. Phospholipid nanovesicular systems, including the phospholipid soft vesicles as well as the non-phospholipid vesicular carries, are reviewed. The altered nanovesicles have served in the manufacture of various cosmetic products and have been investigated and used for the treatment of a wide variety of skin conditions. The evolution and recent advances of these nanovesicular technologies are highlighted in this review.

Flexible conformal-enabled antennas have great potential for various developable surface-built unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) due to their superior mechanical compliance as well as maintaining excellent electromagnetic features. However, it remains a challenge that the antenna holds bending and thermal insensitivity to negligibly shift resonant frequency during conformal attachment and aerial flight, respectively. Here, we report a flexible symmetric-defection antenna (FSDA) with bending and thermal insensitivity. By engraving a symmetric defection on the reflective ground, the radiated unit attached to the soft polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) makes the antenna resonate at the ISM microwave band (resonant frequency = 2.44 GHz) and conformal with a miniaturized UAV. The antenna is also insensitive to both the bending-conformal attachment (20 mm < r < 70 mm) and thermal radiation (20~100 °C) due to the symmetric peripheral-current field along the defection and the low-change thermal effect of the PDMS, respectively. Therefore, the antenna in a non-bending state almost keeps the same impedance matching and radiation when it is attached to a cylinder-back of a UAV. The flexible antenna with bending and thermal insensitivity will pave the way for more conformal or wrapping applications.

This study investigated the integration of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) on stainless steel (SS) substrates for application in building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV). Using advanced atomic force microscopy measurements, we confirmed that enhanced substrate roughness increased the reflectance along an interface. Consequently, a remarkable final efficiency of 11.9% was achieved. Notably, PSCs, known for their exceptional efficiency of 26.1%, can overcome the inherent efficiency limitations of SS-based thin-film solar cells. In this study, a PSC with an efficiency of 14% was fabricated on a flexible SS substrate. This study is a significant step towards advancing sustainable energy solutions for BIPV applications. The global shift towards renewable energy sources has catalyzed intensive research and development efforts, rendering the exploration of alternative materials and manufacturing processes a priority. The success of PSCs on SS substrates underscores their promise to achieve a balance between efficiency and versatility in BIPV solutions. Moreover, our findings reveal that controlling the substrate surface characteristics can significantly enhance the performance of PSCs, offering a pathway toward greater energy efficiency and sustainability in the construction industry.

Vertically aligned nanocomposite (VAN) thin film has attracted tremendous research interests owing to its multifunctionality, enhanced physical properties and multi-field coupling. However, VAN has rarely been demonstrated in flexible form, which hinders its further application in flexible devices. In this work, La0.67Sr0.33MnO3-CeO2 (LC) VAN film has been deposited on flexible mica with or without a buffer layer. The LC nanocomposite films show high quality following textured growth and form a typical, vertically aligned nanostructure. Magnetic, transport and magnetoresistance properties have been explored for flexible nanocomposite thin films. Furthermore, flexible LC films maintain their properties after numerous mechanical bending tests, presenting promising future applications in flexible electronics and spintronics.

Magnetoelectric (ME) magnetic field sensors utilize ME effects in ferroelectric ferromagnetic layered heterostructures to convert magnetic signals into electrical signals. However, the substrate clamping effect greatly limits the design and fabrication of ME composites with high ME coefficients. To reduce the clamping effect and improve the ME response, a flexible ME sensor based on PbZr0.2Ti0.8O3 (PZT)/CoFe2O4 (CFO) ME bilayered heterostructure was deposited on mica substrates via van der Waals oxide heteroepitaxy. A saturated magnetization of 114.5 emu/cm3 was observed in the bilayers. The flexible sensor exhibited a strong ME coefficient of 6.12 V/cm·Oe. The local ME coupling has been confirmed by the evolution of the ferroelectric domain under applied magnetic fields. The flexible ME sensor possessed a stable response with high sensitivity to both AC and DC weak magnetic fields. A high linearity of 0.9988 and sensitivity of 72.65 mV/Oe of the ME sensor were obtained under flat states. The ME output and limit-of-detection under different bending states showed an inferior trend as the bending radius increased. A flexible proximity sensor has been demonstrated, indicating a promising avenue for wearable device applications and significantly broadening the potential application of the flexible ME magnetic field sensors.

A novel approach to fabricating a transparent and flexible one-transistor–one-diode (1T-1D) image sensor array on a flexible colorless polyimide (CPI) film substrate is successfully demonstrated with laser lift-off (LLO) techniques. Leveraging transparent indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes and amorphous indium gallium zinc oxide (a-IGZO) channel-based thin-film transistor (TFT) backplanes, vertically stacked p-i-n hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) photodiodes (PDs) utilizing a low-temperature (10 Jones (biased at −1 V) at a wavelength of 470 nm, respectively. The good mechanical durability and robustness of the flexible image sensor arrays enable them to be attached to a curved surface with bending radii of 20, 15, 10, and 5 mm and 1000 bending cycles, respectively. These studies show the significant promise of utilizing highly flexible and rollable active-matrix technology for the purpose of dynamically sensing optical signals in spatial applications.

Bending strain sensors based on one-dimensional ZnO nanorod (NR) arrays cross-linked with interdigitated electrodes were fabricated on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrates. ZnO NRs were grown using the hydrothermal method through the dopings with different transition metals, such as Co, Ni, or Co-plus-Ni, on PET substrates, and their microstructural morphology and crystalline properties were examined by a variety of surface analysis methods. Ultraviolet photoresponse and normalized resistance change were measured according to the bending strains to concave and convex directions, and the highest gauge factors of 175 and 83 were achieved in the convex and concave directions, respectively, at a bending strain of 1.75%, when Co-plus-Ni was doped to the NRs.

Silver nanowires (AgNWs) are a potential alternative to conventional transparent conductive materials for various applications, such as flexible and transparent electrodes in optoelectronic devices, including touch screens, solar cells, and flexible displays. However, AgNW electrodes face degradation due to environmental factors, electrical instability, and mechanical stress. To overcome these challenges, strategies to protect AgNW-based electrodes via the incorporation of polymeric materials were widely investigated to improve the durability and stability of AgNW-based electrodes. This review paper gives a comprehensive overview of the incorporation of polymeric materials with AgNW electrodes, emphasizing their performance, and applications. We compare the different polymeric materials and their effect on the electrical, optical, and mechanical properties of AgNW electrodes. Furthermore, we evaluate the key factors affecting the choice of protective layers, such as their compatibility with AgNWs, and also we present current challenges and future opportunities for the development of polymeric materials for AgNW electrodes in emerging technologies.

The ability of organic photovoltaics (OPVs) to be deposited on flexible substrates by roll-to-roll (R2R) processes is highly attractive for rapid mass production. Many research teams have demonstrated the great potential of flexible OPVs. However, the fabrication of R2R-coated OPVs is quite limited. There is still a performance gap between the R2R flexible OPVs and the rigid OPVs. In this study, we demonstrate the promising photovoltaic characteristics of flexible OPVs fabricated from blends of low bandgap polymer poly[(2,6-(4,8-bis(5-(2-ethylhexyl)thiophen-2-yl)-benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b′]dithiophene))-alt-(5,5-(1′,3′-di-2-thienyl-5′,7′-bis(2-ethylhexyl)benzo[1′,2′-c:4′,5′-c′]dithiophene-4,8-dione)] (PBDB-T) and non-fullerene 3,9-bis(2-methylene-(3-(1,1-dicyanomethylene)-indanone))-5,5,11,11-tetrakis(4-hexylphenyl)-dithieno[2,3-d:2′,3′-d′]-s-indaceno[1,2-b:5,6-b′]dithiophene (ITIC). We successfully R2R slot-die coated the flexible OPVs with high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of over 8.9% under irradiation of simulated sunlight. Our results indicate that the processing parameters significantly affect the PCE of R2R flexible OPVs. By adjusting the amount of solvent additive and processing temperature, as well as optimizing thermal annealing conditions, the high PCE of R2R slot-die coated OPVs can be obtained. These results provide significant insights into the fundamentals of highly efficient OPVs for the R2R slot-die coating process.

As a typical pseudocapacitor material, VOx possesses mixed valence states, making it an ideal electrode material for symmetric screen-printed supercapacitors. However, its high internal resistance and low energy density are the main hurdles to its widespread application. In this study, a two-dimensional PANI@VOx nanobelt with a core-shell architecture was constructed via a two-step route. This strategy involves the preparation of VOx using a solvothermal method, and a subsequent in situ polymerization process of the PANI. By virtue of the synergistic effect between the VOx core and the PANI shell, the optimal VOx@PANI has an enhanced conductivity of 0.7 ± 0.04 S/Ω, which can deliver a high specific capacitance of 347.5 F/g at 0.5 A/g, a decent cycling life of ~72.0%, and an outstanding Coulomb efficiency of ~100% after 5000 cycles at 5 A/g. Moreover, a flexible all-solid-state symmetric supercapacitor (VOx@PANI SSC) with an in-planar interdigitated structure was screen-printed and assembled on a nickel current collector; it yielded a remarkable areal energy density of 115.17 μWh/cm2 at an areal power density of 0.39 mW/cm2, and possessed outstanding flexibility and mechanical performance. Notably, a “Xiaomi” hygrothermograph (3.0 V) was powered easily by tandem SSCs with an operating voltage of 3.1 V. Therefore, this advanced pseudocapacitor material with core-shell architecture opens novel ideas for flexible symmetric supercapacitors in powering portable/wearable products.

Flexible structures are increasingly important in biomedical applications, where they can be used to achieve adaptable designs. This paper presents a study of the design and behavior of 3D-printed lightweight flexible structures. In this work, we focus on the design principles and numerical modelling of spatial patterns, as well as their mechanical properties and behavior under various loads. Contact surface fraction was determined as the ratio of the surface area of the printed pattern to the surface area of the entire curved surface. The objective of this work is to design a spatial pattern reducing contact surface fraction and develop a non-linear numerical model evaluating the structure’s stiffness; in addition, we aimed to identify the best design pattern with respect to its stiffness:mass ratio. The experimental verification of the numerical model is performed on 3D-printed prototypes prepared using the Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) method and made of Nylon—Polyamide 12. The obtained results provide insights into designing and optimizing lightweight external biomedical applications such as prostheses, orthoses, helmets, or adaptive cushions.

A flexible, non-enzymatic glucose sensor was developed and tested on a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate. The sensor’s design involved printing Ag (silver) as the electrode and utilizing mixtures of either gold–copper oxide-modified reduced graphene oxide (Au-CuO-rGO) or gold–copper oxide-modified reduced graphene oxide-multi-walled carbon nanotubes (Au-CuO-rGO-MWCNTs) as the carrier materials. A one-pot synthesis method was employed to create a nanocomposite material, consisting of Au-CuO-rGO mixtures, which was then printed onto pre-prepared flexible electrodes. The impact of different weight ratios of MWCNTs (0~75 wt%) as a substitute for rGO was also investigated on the sensing characteristics of Au-CuO-rGO-MWCNTs glucose sensors. The fabricated electrodes underwent various material analyses, and their sensing properties for glucose in a glucose solution were measured using linear sweep voltammetry (LSV). The LSV measurement results showed that increasing the proportion of MWCNTs improved the sensor’s sensitivity for detecting low concentrations of glucose. However, it also led to a significant decrease in the upper detection limit for high-glucose concentrations. Remarkably, the research findings revealed that the electrode containing 60 wt% MWCNTs demonstrated excellent sensitivity and stability in detecting low concentrations of glucose. At the lowest concentration of 0.1 μM glucose, the nanocomposites with 75 wt% MWCNTs showed the highest oxidation peak current, approximately 5.9 μA. On the other hand, the electrode without addition of MWCNTs displayed the highest detection limit (approximately 1 mM) and an oxidation peak current of about 8.1 μA at 1 mM of glucose concentration.

The exponential demand for real-time monitoring applications has altered the course of sensor development, from sensor electronics miniaturization, e.g., resorting to printing techniques, to low-cost, flexible and functional wearable materials. Humidity sensing has been used in the prevention and diagnosis of medical conditions, as well as in the assessment of physical comfort. This paper presents a resistive flexible humidity sensor composed of silver interdigitated electrodes (IDTs) screen printed onto polyimide film and an active layer of multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) dispersed in a water-soluble polymer, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). Different MWCNT/PVA sensor sizes and MWCNT percentages are tested to study their effect on the initial electrical resistance (R i ) values and sensor response at different humidity percentages. The results show that the R i values decrease with the increase in % MWCNT. The sensor size did not influence the sensor response, while the % MWCNT affected the sensor behavior upon relative humidity (RH) increments. The 1% MWCNT/PVA sensor showed the best response, reaching a relative electrical resistance, ΔR/R 0 , of 509% at 99% RH. Comparable with other reported sensors, the produced MWCNT/PVA flexible sensor is simpler, greener and shows a good sensitivity to humidity, being easily incorporated in wearable monitoring applications, from sports to medical fields.

The removal of foreign bodies (FBs) from the airways of children is a critical procedure that can avert serious complications. While both flexible and rigid bronchoscopy techniques are employed for this purpose, their comparative efficacy and safety remain subjects of debate. Therefore, we conducted this investigation to compare between both procedures. Studies comparing flexible to rigid bronchoscopy ( n = 14) were identified by searching PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar. We performed comparative meta-analyses of reported presentation characteristics and clinical outcomes, using fixed- and random-effects models. A diverse range of FB types and locations were identified. No difference was observed in the success rate of FB removal between flexible and rigid bronchoscopy (logOR = 0.27; 95%CI: -1.91:2.45). The rate of negative first bronchoscopy was higher in the flexible compared to the rigid group (logOR = 2.68; 95%CI: 1.68:3.67). Conversion rates to the alternative method were higher in the flexible bronchoscopy group. The overall complication rates were similar between both methods; however, the risk of desaturation was significantly lower with flexible bronchoscopy (logOR = -2.22; 95%CI: -3.36:-1.08). Flexible bronchoscopy was associated with a shorter length of hospital stay. The choice of bronchoscopy technique should be tailored to individual case characteristics.

Metasurface absorbers (MSAs) are of significant importance in a wide range of applications, such as in the field of stealth technology. Nevertheless, conventional designs demonstrate limited flexible characteristics and a lack of transparency, hence constraining their suitability for certain radar stealth applications. This study introduces a novel MSA operating in the broad microwave range, which exhibits both optical transparency and flexibility. The structure consists of a flexible substrate made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), along with a resistive film composed of indium tin oxide (ITO). The proposed structure exhibits the ability to effectively absorb over 90% of the energy carried by incident electromagnetic (EM) waves across the frequency range of 9.85-41.76 GHz within an angular range of 0° to 60°. In addition, to assess the efficacy of the absorption performance, an examination of the radar cross-section (RCS) characteristics is conducted. The results indicate a reduction of over 10 dB across the aforementioned broad frequency spectrum, regardless of the central angle.

In this work, we demonstrate P3HT (poly 3-hexylthiophene) organic rectifier diode both in rigid and flexible substrate with a rectification ratio up to 106. This performance has been achieved through tuning the work function of gold with a self-assembled monolayer of 2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorobenzenethiol (PFBT). The diode fabricated on flexible paper substrate shows a very good electrical stability under bending tests and the frequency response is estimated at more than 20 MHz which is sufficient for radio frequency identification (RFID) applications. It is also shown that the low operating voltage of this diode can be a real advantage for use in a rectenna for energy harvesting systems. Simulations of the diode structure show that it can be used at GSM and Wi-Fi frequencies if the diode capacitance is reduced to a few pF and its series resistance to a few hundred ohms. Under these conditions, the DC voltages generated by the rectenna can reach a value up to 1 V.

The rapid growth and evolution of solar panel technology have been driven by continuous advancements in materials science. This review paper provides a comprehensive overview of the diverse range of materials employed in modern solar panels, elucidating their roles, properties, and contributions to overall performance. The discussion encompasses both traditional crystalline silicon-based panels and emerging thin-film technologies. A detailed examination of photovoltaic materials, including monocrystalline and polycrystalline silicon as well as alternative materials such as cadmium telluride (CdTe), copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS), and emerging perovskite solar cells, is presented. Furthermore, the impact of transparent conductive materials, encapsulation polymers, and antireflective coatings on solar panel efficiency and durability is explored. The review delves into the synergistic interplay between material properties, manufacturing processes, and environmental considerations. Through a comprehensive survey of materials utilized in modern solar panels, this paper provides insights into the current state of the field, highlighting avenues for future advancements and sustainable solar energy solutions.

With the swift advancement of the wearable electronic devices industry, the energy storage components of these devices must possess the capability to maintain stable mechanical and chemical properties after undergoing multiple bending or tensile deformations. This circumstance has expedited research efforts toward novel electrode materials for flexible energy storage devices. Nonetheless, among the numerous materials investigated to date, the incorporation of metal current collectors or insulative adhesives remains requisite, which entails additional costs, unnecessary weight, and high contact resistance. At present, biomass-derived flexible architectures stand out as a promising choice in electrochemical energy device applications. Flexible self-supporting properties impart a heightened mechanical performance, obviating the need for additional binders and lowering the contact resistance. Renewable, earth-abundant biomass endows these materials with cost-effectiveness, diversity, and modulable chemical properties. To fully exploit the application potential in biomass-derived flexible carbon architectures, understanding the latest advancements and the comprehensive foundation behind their synthesis assumes significance. This review delves into the comprehensive analysis of biomass feedstocks and methods employed in the synthesis of flexible self-supporting carbon electrodes. Subsequently, the advancements in their application in energy storage devices are elucidated. Finally, an outlook on the potential of flexible carbon architectures and the challenges they face is provided.

Metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS)-based thin-film transistors (TFTs) are gaining significant attention in the field of flexible electronics due to their desirable electrical properties, such as high field-effect mobility (μFE), lower IOFF, and excellent stability under bias stress. TFTs have widespread applications, such as printed electronics, flexible displays, smart cards, image sensors, virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), and the Internet of Things (IoT) devices. In this study, we approach using a low-temperature solution-processed hafnium zirconium oxide (HfZrOx) gate insulator (GI) to improve the performance of lanthanum zinc oxide (LaZnO) TFTs. For the optimization of HfZrO GI, HfZrO films were annealed at 200, 250, and 300 °C. The optimized HfZrO-250 °C GI-based LaZnO TFT shows the μFE of 19.06 cm2V−1s−1, threshold voltage (VTH) of 1.98 V, hysteresis voltage (VH) of 0 V, subthreshold swing (SS) of 256 mV/dec, and ION/IOFF of ~108. The flexible LaZnO TFT with HfZrO-250 °C GI exhibits negligible ΔVTH of 0.25 V under positive-bias-temperature stress (PBTS). The flexible hysteresis-free LaZnO TFTs with HfZrO-250 °C can be widely used for flexible electronics. These enhancements were attributed to the smooth surface morphology and reduced defect density achieved with the HfZrO gate insulator. Therefore, the HfZrO/LaZnO approach holds great promise for next-generation MOS TFTs for flexible electronics.

In this paper, two types of fractional-order damping are proposed for a single flexible link: internal and external friction, related to the material of the link and the environment, respectively. Considering these dampings, the Laplace transform is used to obtain the exact model of a slewing flexible link by means of the Euler–Bernoulli beam theory. The model obtained is used in a sensing antenna with the aim of accurately describing its dynamic behavior, thanks to the incorporation of the mentioned damping models. Therefore, experimental data are used to identify the damping phenomena of this system in the frequency domain. Welch’s method is employed to estimate the experimental frequency responses. To determine the best damping model for the sensing antenna, a cost function with two weighting forms is minimized for different model structures (i.e., with internal and/or external dampings of integer- and/or fractional-order), and their robustness and fitting performance are analyzed.

Flexible electrochemical supercapacitors (FESCs) are emerging as innovative energy storage systems, characterized by their stable performance, long cycle life, and portability/foldability. Crucial components of FESCs, such as electrodes and efficient electrolytes, have become the focus of extensive research. Herein, we examine deep eutectic solvent (DES)–based polymer gel systems for their cost-effective accessibility, simple synthesis, excellent biocompatibility, and exceptional thermal and electrochemical stability. We used a mixture a DES, LiClO4–2-Oxazolidinone as the electroactive species, and a polymer, either polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) or polyacrylamide (PAAM) as a redox additive/plasticizer. This combination facilitates a unique ion-transport process, enhancing the overall electrochemical performance of the polymer gel electrolyte. We manufactured and used LiClO4–2-Oxazolidinone (LO), polyvinyl alcohol–LiClO4–2-Oxazolidinone (PVA–LO), and polyacrylamide–LiClO4–2-Oxazolidinone (PAAM–LO) electrolytes to synthesize an MnO2 symmetric FESC. To evaluate their performance, we analyzed the MnO2 symmetric FESC using various electrolytes with cyclic voltammetry (CV), galvanostatic charge–discharge (GCD), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The FESC featuring the PVA–LO electrolyte demonstrated superior electrochemical and mechanical performances. This solid-state MnO2 symmetric FESC exhibited a specific capacitance of 121.6 F/g within a potential window of 2.4 V. Due to the excellent ionic conductivity and the wide electrochemical operating voltage range of the PVA–LO electrolyte, a high energy density of 97.3 Wh/kg at 1200 W/kg, and a long-lasting energy storage system (89.7% capacitance retention after 5000 cycles of GCD at 2 A/g) are feasibly achieved. For practical applications, we employed the MnO2 symmetric FESCs with the PVA–LO electrolyte to power a digital watch and a light-emitting diode, further demonstrating their real-world utility.

SnO2 is deemed a potential candidate for high energy density (1494 mAh g−1) anode materials for Li-ion batteries (LIBs). However, its severe volume variation and low intrinsic electrical conductivity result in poor long-term stability and reversibility, limiting the further development of such materials. Therefore, we propose a novel strategy, that is, to prepare SnO2 hollow nanospheres (SnO2-HNPs) by a template method, and then introduce these SnO2-HNPs into one-dimensional (1D) carbon nanofibers (CNFs) uniformly via electrospinning technology. Such a sugar gourd-like construction effectively addresses the limitations of traditional SnO2 during the charging and discharging processes of LIBs. As a result, the optimized product (denoted SnO2-HNP/CNF), a binder-free integrated electrode for half and full LIBs, displays superior electrochemical performance as an anode material, including high reversible capacity (~735.1 mAh g−1 for half LIBs and ~455.3 mAh g−1 at 0.1 A g−1 for full LIBs) and favorable long-term cycling stability. This work confirms that sugar gourd-like SnO2-HNP/CNF flexible integrated electrodes prepared with this novel strategy can effectively improve battery performance, providing infinite possibilities for the design and development of flexible wearable battery equipment.
