The metal–insulator transition induced by the gate electric field in the charge order phase of the α-(BEDT-TTF)2I3 single-crystal field-effect transistor (FET) structure was clearly observed near the phase transition temperature. An abrupt increase in the electrical conductance induced by the applied gate electric field was evident, which corresponds to the partial dissolution of the charge order phase triggered by the gate electric field. The estimated nominal dissolved charge order region (i.e., the gate-induced metallic region) was overestimated in 130–150 K, suggesting additional effects such as Joule heating. On the other hand, in the lower temperature region below 120 K, the corresponding dissolved charge order was several monolayers of BEDT-TTF, suggesting that it is possible to dissolve the charge order phase within the bistable temperature region.

The emerging field of quantum simulation of many-body systems is widely recognized as a very important application of quantum computing. A crucial step towards its realization in the context of many-electron systems requires a rigorous quantum mechanical treatment of the different interactions. In this pilot study, we investigate the physical effects beyond the mean-field approximation, known as electron correlation, in the ground state energies of atomic systems using the classical-quantum hybrid variational quantum eigensolver algorithm. To this end, we consider three isoelectronic species, namely Be, Li−, and B+. This unique choice spans three classes—a neutral atom, an anion, and a cation. We have employed the unitary coupled-cluster ansätz to perform a rigorous analysis of two very important factors that could affect the precision of the simulations of electron correlation effects within a basis, namely mapping and backend simulator. We carry out our all-electron calculations with four such basis sets. The results obtained are compared with those calculated by using the full configuration interaction, traditional coupled-cluster and the unitary coupled-cluster methods, on a classical computer, to assess the precision of our results. A salient feature of the study involves a detailed analysis to find the number of shots (the number of times a variational quantum eigensolver algorithm is repeated to build statistics) required for calculations with IBM Qiskit’s QASM simulator backend, which mimics an ideal quantum computer. When more qubits become available, our study will serve as among the first steps taken towards computing other properties of interest to various applications such as new physics beyond the Standard Model of elementary particles and atomic clocks using the variational quantum eigensolver algorithm.

VO2 is one of the most studied vanadium oxides because it undergoes a reversible metal-insulator transition (MIT) upon heating with a critical temperature of around 340 K. One of the most overlooked aspects of VO2 is the band’s anisotropy in the metallic phase when the Fermi level is crossed by two bands: π* and d||. They are oriented perpendicularly in one respect to the other, hence generating anisotropy. One of the parameters tuning MIT properties is the unbalance of the electron population of π* and d|| bands that arise from their different energy position with respect to the Fermi level. In systems with reduced dimensionality, the electron population disproportion is different with respect to the bulk leading to a different anisotropy. Investigating such a system with a band-selective spectroscopic tool is mandatory. In this manuscript, we show the results of the investigation of a single crystalline 8 nm VO2/TiO2(101) film. We report on the effectiveness of linearly polarized resonant photoemission (ResPES) as a band-selective technique probing the intrinsic anisotropy of VO2.

We present a theoretical model to compute the accurate photoionization dynamical parameters (cross-sections, asymmetry parameters and orbital, or cross-section, ratios) from Dyson orbitals obtained with the multi-state complete active space perturbation theory to the second order (MS-CASPT2) method. Our new implementation of Dyson orbitals in OpenMolcas takes advantage of the full Abelian symmetry point group and has the corrected normalization. The Dyson orbitals are coupled to an accurate description of the electronic continuum obtained with a multicentric B-spline basis at the DFT and TD-DFT levels. Two prototype diatomic molecules, i.e., CS and SiS, have been chosen due to their smallness, which hides important correlation effects. These effects manifest themselves in the appearance of well-characterized isolated satellite bands in the middle of the valence region. The rich satellite structures make CS and SiS the perfect candidates for a computational study based on our highly accurate MS-CASPT2/B-spline TD-DFT protocol.

Double photoionization events provide a direct evaluation of electron correlation. The recent focus on few-electron targets continues to reveal the consequences of electron correlation for targets that possess several electrons. We consider the double photoionization of the 2p2 valence electrons of atomic carbon and focus on the first energetically accessible final-state symmetries that originate from coupling the active electrons in 3P configurations, which are doubly ionized by a single photon. Comparison of this process in carbon with neon provides an analogous case for the resulting final-state symmetries within the framework where the ejected electrons are influenced by the remaining bound electrons in a frozen-core approximation. Choosing this symmetry allows for comparison with previous theoretical results for total and energy sharing cross-sections of carbon. Fully differential cross-sections for both carbon and neon are also compared.

The discrepancy among one-electron and two-electron densities for diverse N-electron atomss, enclosing neutral systems (with nuclear charge Z=N) and charge-one ions (|N−Z|=1), is quantified by means of mutual information, I, and Quantum Similarity Index, QSI, in the conjugate spaces position/momentum. These differences can be interpreted as a measure of the electron correlation of the system. The analysis is carried out by considering systems with a nuclear charge up to Z=103 and singly charged ions (cations and anions) as far as N=54. The interelectronic correlation, for any given system, is quantified through the comparison of its double-variable electron pair density and the product of the respective one-particle densities. An in-depth study along the Periodic Table reveals the importance, far beyond the weight of the systems considered, of their shell structure.

We propose a novel approach for characterising the electron spectrum of disordered crystals constructed from a Hamiltonian of electrons as well as phonons and a diagram approach for Green’s function. The system’s electronic states were modelled by means of the multi-band, tight-binding approach. The system’s Hamiltonian is described based on the electron wave functions at the field of the atom nucleus. Our novel approach incorporates the long-range Coulomb interplay of electrons located in different lattice positions. Explicit interpretations of Green’s functions are derived using a diagram method. Equations are obtained for the vertex components for the mass operators of the electron–electron as well aselectron–phonon interplays. A system of equations for the spectrum of elementary excitations in the crystal is obtained, in which the vertex components for the mass operators of electron–electron as well as electron–phonon interplays are renormalised. Thismakes it possible to perform numerical computationsfor the system’s energy spectrum with a predetermined accuracy. In contrast to other approaches in which electron correlations are only taken into account in the limiting cases of an infinitely large and infinitesimal electron density, in this method, electron correlations are described in the general case of an arbitrary density. We obtained the cluster expansion of the density of states (DOS) of the disordered systems. We demonstrate that the addition of the electron-scattering mechanismsto the clusters is decreasing. This happens due to a growing number of positions in the cluster, which hang ontothe small parameter. The computing exactness is fixed by a small parameter for cluster expansion of Green’s functions of electrons as well as phonons.

Trimeric acylphloroglucinols (T-ACPLs) are a subclass of the large class of acylphloroglucinols—derivatives of 1,3,5-trihydroxybenzene containing an R–C=O group. T-ACPL molecules contain three acylphloroglucinol moieties linked by methylene bridges. Many of them are present in natural sources and exhibit biological activities, often better than the corresponding activities of monomeric acylphloroglucinols. All the stable conformers of T-ACPLs contain seven intramolecular hydrogen bonds, which constitute the dominant stabilising factors. A total of 38 different T-ACPLs, including both naturally occurring and model molecules, have been calculated at the HF and DFT/B3LYP levels. The DFT/B3LYP calculations were carried out both without and with Grimme’s dispersion correction, to highlight the dispersion (and, therefore, also electron correlation) effects for these molecules. The roles of dispersion are evaluated considering the effects of Grimme’s correction on the estimation of the conformers’ energies, the description of the characteristics of the individual hydrogen bonds, the conformers’ geometries and other molecular properties. Overall, the results offer a comprehensive overview of the conformational preferences of T-ACPL molecules, their intramolecular hydrogen bond patterns, and the correlation effects on their properties.

A recently developed valence-bond-based multireference density functional theory, named λ-DFVB, is revisited in this paper. λ-DFVB remedies the double-counting error of electron correlation by decomposing the electron–electron interactions into the wave function term and density functional term with a variable parameter λ. The λ value is defined as a function of the free valence index in our previous scheme, denoted as λ-DFVB(K) in this paper. Here we revisit the λ-DFVB method and present a new scheme based on natural orbital occupation numbers (NOONs) for parameter λ, named λ-DFVB(IS), to simplify the process of λ-DFVB calculation. In λ-DFVB(IS), the parameter λ is defined as a function of NOONs, which are straightforwardly determined from the many-electron wave function of the molecule. Furthermore, λ-DFVB(IS) does not involve further self-consistent field calculation after performing the valence bond self-consistent field (VBSCF) calculation, and thus, the computational effort in λ-DFVB(IS) is approximately the same as the VBSCF method, greatly reduced from λ-DFVB(K). The performance of λ-DFVB(IS) was investigated on a broader range of molecular properties, including equilibrium bond lengths and dissociation energies, atomization energies, atomic excitation energies, and chemical reaction barriers. The computational results show that λ-DFVB(IS) is more robust without losing accuracy and comparable in accuracy to high-level multireference wave function methods, such as CASPT2.

EXAFS spectroscopy is one of the most used techniques to solve the structure of actinoid solutions. In this work a systematic analysis of the EXAFS spectra of four actinyl cations, [UO2]2+, [NpO2]2+, [NpO2]+ and [PuO2]2+ has been carried out by comparing experimental results with theoretical spectra. These were obtained by averaging individual contributions from snapshots taken from classical Molecular Dynamics simulations which employed a recently developed [AnO2]2+/+ –H2O force field based on the hydrated ion model using a quantum-mechanical (B3LYP) potential energy surface. Analysis of the complex EXAFS signal shows that both An-Oyl and An-OW single scattering paths as well as multiple scattering ones involving [AnO2]+/2+ molecular cation and first-shell water molecules are mixed up all together to produce a very complex signal. Simulated EXAFS from the B3LYP force field are in reasonable agreement for some of the cases studied, although the k= 6–8 Å−1 region is hard to be reproduced theoretically. Except uranyl, all studied actinyls are open-shell electron configurations, therefore it has been investigated how simulated EXAFS spectra are affected by minute changes of An-O bond distances produced by the inclusion of static and dynamic electron correlation in the quantum mechanical calculations. A [NpO2]+−H2O force field based on a NEVPT2 potential energy surface has been developed. The small structural changes incorporated by the electron correlation on the actinyl aqua ion geometry, typically smaller than 0.07 Å, leads to improve the simulated spectrum with respect to that obtained from the B3LYP force field. For the other open-shell actinyls, [NpO2]2+ and [PuO2]2+, a simplified strategy has been adopted to improve the simulated EXAFS spectrum. It is computed taking as reference structure the NEVPT2 optimized geometry and including the DW factors of their corresponding MD simulations employing the B3LYP force field. A better agreement between the experimental and the simulated EXAFS spectra is found, confirming the a priori guess that the inclusion of dynamic and static correlation refine the structural description of the open-shell actinyl aqua ions.

Thermodynamics of plutonium monocarbide is studied from first-principles theory that includes relativistic electronic structure and anharmonic lattice vibrations. Density-functional theory (DFT) is expanded to include orbital-orbital coupling in addition to the relativistic spin-orbit interaction for the electronic structure and it is combined with anharmonic, temperature dependent, lattice dynamics derived from the self-consistent ab initio lattice dynamics (SCAILD) method. The obtained thermodynamics are compared to results from simpler quasi-harmonic theory and experimental data. Formation enthalpy, specific heat, and Gibbs energy calculated from the anharmonic model are validated by direct comparison with a calculation of phase diagram (CALPHAD) assessment of PuC and sub-stochiometric PuC0.896. Overall, the theory reproduces CALPHAD results and measured data for PuC rather well, but the comparison is hampered by the sub-stoichiometric nature of plutonium monocarbide. It was found that a bare theoretical approach that ignores spin-orbit and orbital-orbital coupling (orbital polarization) of the plutonium 5f electrons promotes too soft phonons and Gibbs energies that are incompatible with that of the CALPHAD assessment of the experimental data. The investigation of PuC suggests that the electronic structure is accurately described by plutonium 5f electrons as “band like” and delocalized, but correlate through spin polarization, orbital polarization, and spin-orbit coupling, in analogy to previous findings for plutonium metal.

Energy profiles of seven halogen-bonded complexes were analysed with the topological energy partitioning called Interacting Quantum Atoms (IQA) at MP4(SDQ)/6–31 + G(2d,2p) level of theory. Explicit interatomic electron correlation energies are included in the analysis. Four complexes combine X2 (X = Cl or F) with HCN or NH3, while the remaining three combine ClF with HCN, NH3 or N2. Each complex was systematically deformed by translating the constituent molecules along its central axis linking X and N, and reoptimising its remaining geometry. The Relative Energy Gradient (REG) method (Theor. Chem. Acc. 2017, 136, 86) then computes which IQA energies most correlate with the total energy during the process of complex formation and further compression beyond the respective equilibrium geometries. It turns out that the covalent energy (i.e., exchange) of the halogen bond, X…N, itself drives the complex formation. When the complexes are compressed from their equilibrium to shorter X…N distance then the intra-atomic energy of N is in charge. When the REG analysis is restricted to electron correlation then the interatomic correlation energy between X and N again drives the complex formation, and the complex compression is best described by the destabilisation of the through-space correlation energy between N and the “outer” halogen.

Density functional theory (DFT) calculations are employed to explore and assess the effects of the relativistic spin−orbit interaction and electron correlations in the actinide elements. Specifically, we address electron correlations in terms of an intra-atomic Coulomb interaction with a Hubbard U parameter (DFT + U). Contrary to recent beliefs, we show that for the ground-state properties of the light actinide elements Th to Pu, the DFT + U makes its best predictions for U = 0. Actually, our modeling suggests that the most popular DFT + U formulation leads to the wrong ground-state phase for plutonium. Instead, extending DFT and the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) with orbital−orbital interaction (orbital polarization; OP) is the most accurate approach. We believe the confusion in the literature on the subject mostly originates from incorrectly accounting for the spin−orbit (SO) interaction for the p1/2 state, which is not treated in any of the widely used pseudopotential plane-wave codes. Here, we show that for the actinides it suffices to simply discard the SO coupling for the p states for excellent accuracy. We thus describe a formalism within the projector-augmented-wave (PAW) scheme that allows for spin−orbit coupling, orbital polarization, and non-collinear magnetism, while retaining an efficient calculation of Hellmann−Feynman forces. We present results of the ground-state phases of all the light actinide metals (Th to Pu). Furthermore, we conclude that the contribution from OP is generally small, but substantial in plutonium.

Over the past two decades (EDO-TTF)2PF6 (EDO-TTF = 4,5-ethylenedioxytetrathiafulvalene), which exhibits a metal–insulator (M–I) phase transition with charge–ordering (CO), has been investigated energetically because of attractive characteristics that include ultrafast and massive photoinduced spectral and structural changes. In contrast, while its crystal structure has much in common with the (EDO-TTF)2PF6 crystal, the organic alloy system of [(EDO-TTF)0.89(MeEDO-TTF)0.11]2PF6 (MeEDO-TTF = 4,5-ethylenedioxy-4′-methyltetrathiafulvalene) exhibits a quite different type of M–I phase transition that is attributed to Peierls instability. Here, an optical study of the static absorption spectra and the time-resolved changes in the absorption spectra of [(EDO-TTF)0.89(MeEDO-TTF)0.11]2PF6 are reported. The observed absorption spectra related to the electronic structure are highly anisotropic. With a reduction in temperature (T), the opening of a small optical gap and a small shift in the center frequency of the C=C stretching mode are observed along with the M–I phase transition. Additionally, photoinduced transient states have been assigned based on their relaxation processes and transient intramolecular vibrational spectra. Reflecting small valence and structural changes and weak donor–anion interactions, a photoinduced transient state that is similar to the thermal-equilibrium high-T metallic phase appears more rapidly in the alloy system than that in (EDO-TTF)2PF6.

We employ Green’s function method for describing multiband models with magnetic impurities and apply the formalism to the problem of chromium impurities adsorbed onto a carbon nanotube. Density functional theory is used to determine the bandstructure, which is then fit to a tight-binding model to allow for the subsequent Green’s function description. Electron⁻electron interactions, electron⁻phonon coupling, and disorder scattering are all taken into account (perturbatively) with a theory that involves a cluster extension of the coherent potential approximation. We show how increasing the cluster size produces more accurate results and how the final calculations converge as a function of the cluster size. We examine the spin-polarized electrical current on the nanotube generated by the magnetic impurities adsorbed onto the nanotube surface. The spin polarization increases with both increasing concentration of chromium impurities and with increasing magnetic field. Its origin arises from the strong electron correlations generated by the Cr impurities.

Organic molecular conductors with a strongly correlated electron system, in which the itinerancy of electrons (or holes) and the electron correlation (U/W, U, the on-site Coulomb repulsion, W, the bandwidth) compete with each other, are promising candidates for achieving superconductivity and also for exploring remarkable physical properties induced by external stimuli such as pressure, light, voltage and current. Our synthetic approach to the construction of strongly correlated organic electron systems is based on chemical modifications to the donor molecule BDH-TTP [2,5-bis(1,3-dithiolan-2-ylidene)-1,3,4,6-tetrathiapentalene] capable of producing metallic CT (charge-transfer) salts stable down to low temperatures (4.2–1.5 K). This aims at enhancing the electron correlation in the itinerant electron system by decreasing the bandwidth. Chemical modifications of BDH-TTP such as ring expansion of two outer dithiolane rings, replacement of one sulfur atom in an outer dithiolane ring with an oxygen atom and introduction of two methyl substituents into an outer ditiolane ring led to BDA-TTP [2,5-bis(1,3-dithian-2-ylidene)-1,3,4,6-tetrathiapentalene], DHOT-TTP [2-(1,3-dithiolan-2-ylidene)-5-(1,3-oxathiolan-2-ylidene)-1,3,4,6-tetrathiapentalene] and DMDH-TTP [2-(4,5-dimethyl-1,3-dithiolan-2-ylidene)-5-(1,3-dithiolan-2-ylidene)-1,3,4,6-tetrathiapentalene], respectively. In this review, the physical properties and the crystal and electronic structures of molecular conductors derived from these donor molecules will be described.

Heat capacity measurements of κ-(BEDT-TTF)2X (BEDT-TTF: Bis(ethylendithio) tetrathiafulvalene, X: counteranions) which are classified as two-dimensional (2D) dimer-Mott system are reported. At first, we explain structural and electronic features originated from rigid dimerization in donor arrangement in 2D layers. The antiferromagnetic Mott insulating phase located at low-pressure region in the phase diagram shows vanishing γ electronic heat capacity coefficient in the heat capacity, which claims opening of a charge-gap in this insulating state. Then, a systematic change of the γ around the Mott boundary region is reported in relation to the glass freezing of ethylene dynamics. The thermodynamic parameters determined by ∆Cp/γTc of 10 K class superconductors, κ-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu(NCS)2 and κ-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu[N(CN)2]Br demonstrate that a rather large gap with a strong coupling character appears around the Fermi-surface. On the other hand, the low temperature heat capacity clearly shows a picture of nodal-gap structure due to an anisotropic pairing. The comparison with lower Tc compounds in the κ-type structure is also performed so as to discuss overall features of the κ-type superconductors. The heat capacity measurements of hole-doped systems containing mercury in the counteranions show an anomalous enhancement of γ, which is consistent with the T1−1 of NMR experiments etc. The results of heat capacity measurements under high pressures are also reported.

Abstract: In a previous paper, we have avoided an infinite order perturbation expansion and obtained a closed expression which consists of the second-order Møller-Plesset energy component together with a remainder term. The applicabilty of second-order many-body perturbation theory with a Møller-Plesset reference hamiltonian then rests upon the magnitude of this remainder term rather than the behaviour of the higher order terms on the perturbation series. In the present work, we show how this remainder term can be estimated by limited configuration interaction.

Abstract: We examine the possibility of introducing a new class of so called noniterative corrections to coupled cluster energies, based on the connected moments expansion (CMX). Approximate Coupled Cluster (CC) wave functions are used as reference states and then the “improved energies†can be formally obtained either by CMX in terms of the moments of CC similarity transformed Hamiltonian, or in CMX of the usual Hamiltonian. Numerical results are given for some model systems that show the superiority of the latter approach.

Enhanced superconductivity is sought by employing heterostructures composed of boron-doped graphene and iron selenide. Build-up of a composite manifold of near-degenerate noninteracting states formed by coupling top-of-valence-band states of FeSe to bottom-of-conduction-band states of boron-doped graphene is demonstrated. Intra- and intersubsystem excitons are explored by means of density functional theory in order to articulate a normal state from which superconductivity may emerge. The results are discussed in the context of electron correlation in general and multi-band superconductivity in particular.
