The global environmental crisis necessitates reliable, sustainable, and safe energy storage solutions. The current systems are nearing their capacity limits due to the reliance on conventional liquid electrolytes, which are fraught with stability and safety concerns, prompting the exploration of solid-state electrolytes, which enable the integration of metal electrodes. Solid-state sodium-ion batteries emerge as an appealing option by leveraging the abundance, low cost, and sustainability of sodium. However, low ionic conductivity and high interfacial resistance currently prevent their widespread adoption. This study explores polyvinyl-based polymers as wetting agents for the NASICON-type NZSP (Na3Zr2Si2PO12) solid electrolyte, resulting in a combined system with enhanced ionic conductivity suitable for Na-ion solid-state full cells. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) performed on symmetric cells employing NZSP paired with different wetting agent compositions demonstrates a significant reduction in interfacial resistance with the use of poly(vinyl acetate)—(PVAc-) based polymers, achieving an impressive ionic conductivity of 1.31 mS cm−1 at room temperature, 63.8% higher than the pristine material, notably reaching 7.36 mS cm−1 at 90 °C. These results offer valuable insights into the potential of PVAc-based polymers for advancing high-performance solid-state sodium-ion batteries by reducing their total internal resistance.

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is becoming more and more relevant for the characterization of biosensors employing interdigitated electrodes. We compare four different sensor topologies for an exemplary use case of ion sensing to extract recommendations for the design optimizations of impedimetric biosensors. Therefore, we first extract how sensor design parameters affect the sensor capacitance using analytical calculations and finite element (FEM) simulations. Moreover, we develop equivalent circuit models for our sensor topologies and validate them using FEM simulations. As a result, the impedimetric sensor response is better understood, and sensitive and selective frequency ranges can be determined for a given sensor topology. From this, we extract design optimizations for different sensing principles.

The corrosion resistance properties of a new type of environmentally-friendly organic inhibitor containing amino ketone molecules are presented in this paper. To evaluate the prevention effect of the inhibitor on corrosion of reinforcement, the electrochemical characteristics of steels in the simulated concrete pore solution (SPS) were investigated under varied conditions of the relevant parameters, including concentrations of the inhibitor and NaCl, pH value, and temperature. The inhibition efficiency of the material was characterized through electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), potentiodynamic polarization, and the weight loss of steels. The results reveal a significant improvement in the corrosion resistance of steels with the inhibitor. A maximum resistance value of 89.07% was achieved at an inhibitor concentration of 4%. Moreover, the new organic inhibitor exhibited good corrosion protection capability for steels under different NaCl concentrations. Its inhibition efficiency was determined to be 65.62, 80.06, and 66.30% at NaCl concentrations of 2, 3.5 and 5%, respectively. On the other hand, it was found that an alkaline environment was favorable for an enhanced corrosion prevention effect, and an optimal pH value of 11.3 was observed in this work. Besides, the inhibition efficiencies at different temperatures showed a trend of 25 > 35 > 40 > 20 > 30 °C, with a maximum value of 81.32% at 25 °C. The above results suggest that the new organic material has high potential to be used as an eco-friendly and long-term durable inhibitor for steel corrosion prevention under complex conditions.

Accurate extraction of polarization resistance is crucial in the application of proton exchange membrane fuel cells. It is generally assumed that the steady-state resistance obtained from the polarization curve model is equivalent to the AC impedance obtained from the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) when the frequency approaches zero. However, due to the low-frequency stability and nonlinearity issues of the EIS method, this dynamic process leads to an additional rise in polarization resistance compared to the steady-state method. In this paper, a semi-empirical model and equivalent circuit models are developed to extract the steady-state and dynamic polarization resistances, respectively, while a static internal resistance correction method is proposed to represent the systematic error between the two. With the correction, the root mean square error of the steady-state resistance relative to the dynamic polarization resistance decreases from 26.12% to 7.42%, indicating that the weighted sum of the static internal resistance and the steady-state resistance can better correspond to the dynamic polarization resistance. The correction method can also simplify the EIS procedure by directly generating an estimate of the dynamic polarization resistance in the full current interval.

In the era of Industry 4.0, achieving optimization in production and minimizing environmental impact has become vital. Energy management, particularly in the context of smart grids, plays a crucial role in ensuring sustainability and efficiency. Lithium-ion batteries have emerged as a leading technology for energy storage due to their versatility and performances. However, accurately assessing their State of Health (SOH) is essential for maintaining grid reliability. While discharge capacity and internal resistance (IR) are commonly used SOH indicators, battery impedance also offers valuable insights into aging degradation. This article explores the use of Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) to define the SOH of lithium batteries. By analyzing impedance spectra at different frequencies, a comprehensive understanding of battery degradation is obtained. A life cycle analysis is conducted on cylindrical Li–Mn batteries under various discharge conditions, utilizing EIS measurements and an Equivalent Circuit Model (ECM). This study highlights the differential effects of aging on battery characteristics, emphasizing the variations at different life stages and the behavior changes on each region of the impedance spectrum. Furthermore, it demonstrates the efficacy of EIS and the advantages of this technique compared to the solely IR measurements used in tracking SOH over time. This research contributes to advancing the understanding of lithium battery degradation and underscores the importance of EIS in defining their State of Health for Smart Grids applications.

A new Mg-4Zn X Ti-6Al-4V (TC4, of 0, 1, and 3 wt.%) alloy was successfully fabricated by a simple and low-cost gravity casting method and heat treatment at 150 °C for 24 h. The composite was examined by XRD, uniaxial tests, FESEM/EDS, potentiostat/EIS, and immersion tests for the material’s microstructures, mechanical properties, electrochemical characteristics, and corrosion resistance. Experimental results indicate that heat treatment enables the precipitation of Zn along the Mg grain boundaries and drives the co-precipitation of Al around the TC4 particles and nearby grain boundaries. Uniaxial tensile tests reveal that TC4 reinforces the Mg-Zn matrix material with higher elastic modulus, ultimate tensile stress, and toughness. The heat treatment further enhanced these mechanical properties. Electrochemical tests show that 1 wt.% TC4 composite exhibits the highest open circuit potential among all tested samples, which implies the 1 wt.% TC4-added Mg-Zn is better resistant to the oxidation of the essential metals Mg, Zn, and Al. The immersion tests in the HBSS solution further show that the 1 wt.% TC4 composite has the lowest rise of pH values after 14 days, and EDS for the corroded surface signifies that Mg is the main element vulnerable to oxidation by corrosion.

During the power operation of the primary loop of a water cooled–water moderated energy reactor (WWER), the water chemistry evolves from a high-boron high-potassium composition to significantly lower concentrations of both constituents at the end of a campaign, and the Li concentration reaches ca. 0.7–0.9 ppm. In the present paper, the effect of primary water chemistry evolution during operation on the corrosion rate and conduction mechanism of oxides on Alloy 690 is studied by in situ impedance spectroscopy at 300 °C/9 MPa during 1-week exposures in an autoclave connected to a re-circulation loop. At the end of exposure, the samples were anodically polarized at potentials −0.8 to −0.1 V vs. SHE to evaluate the stability of the passive oxide. Simultaneously exposed samples of Alloy 690 were subsequently analyzed by XPS to estimate the thickness and in-depth composition of oxides. Impedance data were quantitatively interpreted using the mixed-conduction model (MCM) for oxide films. The effect of water chemistry evolution on the corrosion rate and conduction mechanism in the oxide on Alloy 690 in a primary coolant is discussed based on the obtained parameters.

Effectively extracting a lithium-ion battery’s impedance is of great importance for various onboard applications, which requires consideration of both the time consumption and accuracy of the measurement process. Although the pseudorandom binary sequence (PRBS) excitation signal can inject the superposition frequencies with high time efficiency and an easily implementable device, processing the data of the battery’s impedance measurement is still a challenge at present. This study proposes a fast impedance spectrum construction method for lithium-ion batteries, where a multi-density clustering algorithm was designed to effectively extract the useful impedance after PRBS injection. According to the distribution properties of the measurement points by PRBS, a density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise (DBSCAN) was used for processing the data of the lithium-ion battery’s impedance. The two key parameters of the DBSCAN were adjusted by a delicate workflow according to the frequency range. The validation of the proposed method was proved on a 3 Ah lithium-ion battery under nine different test conditions, considering both the SOC and temperature variations.

In the present paper, the effect of the evolution of primary water chemistry during power operation on the corrosion rate and conduction mechanism of oxide films on stainless steel is studied by in situ impedance spectroscopy at 300 °C/9 MPa during 1-week exposure periods in an autoclave connected to a recirculation loop. At the end of the exposure period, the samples were anodically polarized in a wide range of potentials to evaluate the stability of the passive oxide. Separate samples of the same steel were simultaneously exposed to the coolant and subsequently analyzed by glow discharge optical emission spectroscopy (GDOES) in order to estimate the thickness and the in-depth composition of the formed oxides. Impedance data were quantitatively interpreted using the mixed-conduction model for oxide films (MCM) to estimate the rates of metal oxidation at the alloy/oxide interface, oxide dissolution and restructuring at the film/coolant interface, and ion transport in the protective corrosion layer.

We propose a new strategy using a sandwich approach for the detection of two HF biomarkers: tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-10 (IL-10). For this purpose, magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) (MNPs@aminodextran) were biofunctionalized with monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) using bis (sulfosuccinimidyl) suberate (BS3) as a cross-linker for the pre-concentration of two biomarkers (TNF-α and IL-10). In addition, our ISFETs were biofunctionalized with polyclonal antibodies (pAbs) (TNF-α and IL-10). The biorecognition between pAbs immobilized on the ISFET and the pre-concentrate antigen (Ag) on MNPs was monitored using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Our developed ImmunoFET showed a low detection limit (0.03 pg/mL) toward our target analyte when compared to previously published electrochemical immunosensors. It showed a higher sensitivity than for other HF biomarkers. Finally, the standard addition method was used to determine the unknown concentration in artificial saliva. The results matched with the expected values well.

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are considered promising energy sources whereby chemical energy is converted into electricity via bioelectrochemical reactions utilizing microorganisms. Several factors affect MFC performance, including cathodic reduction of oxygen, electrode materials, cell internal and external resistances, and cell design. This work describes the effect of the catalyst coating in the air-cathode membrane electrode assembly (MEA) for a microbial fuel cell (MFC) prepared via electrodeposition of manganese oxide. The characterization of the synthesized air-cathode MFC, operating in a continuous mode, was made via electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analyses for the determination of the intrinsic properties of the electrode that are crucial for scalability purposes. EIS analysis of the MFCs and of the MEA reveals that the anode and cathode contribute to polarization resistance by about 85% and 15%, respectively, confirming the high catalytic activity of the Mn-based air cathode. The maximum power density of the Mn-based cathode is about 20% higher than that recorded using a Pt/C electrode.

Nowadays, different industries, such as the aerospace and biomedical industries, prefer using Ti alloys due to their excellent anti-corrosion properties and ability to generate a TiO2 oxide layer; this induces the use of anodization to increase the useful life of components. The aim of this work is to characterize the electrochemical effect of anodizing treatment on titanium alloys (Ti CP2, Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo, Ti-6Al-4V, and Ti Beta-C) in NaOH and KOH at 1 M, applying a current density of 0.0025 A/cm2. The electrochemical techniques employed were electrochemical noise (EN) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), supported by ASTM G199 and ASTM G106 in electrolytes of NaCl and H2SO4 at 3.5 wt. % as a simulation of marine and industrial atmospheres. Also, the anodized transversal section and surface morphology were characterized by a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results of both electrochemical techniques indicated that Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo anodized in NaOH presented the best properties against corrosion, and the thickness of the oxide was the biggest.

Impedimetric biosensors represent a powerful and promising tool for studying and monitoring biological processes associated with proteins and can contribute to the development of new approaches in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. The basic principles, analytical methods, and applications of hybrid impedimetric biosensors for express protein detection in biological fluids are described. The advantages of this type of biosensors, such as simplicity and speed of operation, sensitivity and selectivity of analysis, cost-effectiveness, and an ability to be integrated into hybrid microfluidic systems, are demonstrated. Current challenges and development prospects in this area are analyzed. They include (a) the selection of materials for electrodes and formation of nanostructures on their surface; (b) the development of efficient methods for biorecognition elements’ deposition on the electrodes’ surface, providing the specificity and sensitivity of biosensing; (c) the reducing of nonspecific binding and interference, which could affect specificity; (d) adapting biosensors to real samples and conditions of operation; (e) expanding the range of detected proteins; and, finally, (f) the development of biosensor integration into large microanalytical system technologies. This review could be useful for researchers working in the field of impedimetric biosensors for protein detection, as well as for those interested in the application of this type of biosensor in biomedical diagnostics.

The development of polymeric materials for the repair and reinforcement of damaged sites in water has many practical applications, especially in ocean engineering. However, it is difficult to construct an anticorrosion coating in water. In addition, curing kinetics, which are the key to enhance the performance of coatings, seem to hardly be observed and regulated in an underwater condition. Herein, a novel underwater in situ repairing coating was prepared. Meanwhile, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was applied to observe its curing behavior underwater. Adhesion tests showed that the coatings cured underwater had good adhesion to different substrate surfaces and the ideal ratio of curing agent to epoxy resin was 0.6. Long-term anticorrosive tests demonstrated that the coatings had an excellent anti-corrosion performance. The viscosity changes in different curing stages were well reflected by frequency response characteristics from Bode and Nyquist curves by EIS. Two equivalent electrical circuits were selected to simulate the impedance date at the initial and final curing stage. A formula was put forward to evaluate the curing degree during the curing process. Finally, the effects of temperature and the ingredient ratio on the reaction rate and curing degree were also investigated here. This underwater in situ repairing coating may find applications in many offshore engineering structures in marine environments, and the EIS technique has attractive development and application prospects when observing the curing information of thermosetting resin systems under special circumstances.

In this work, we present a multiphysics modeling approach capable of simulating electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) responses of screen-printed electrodes (SPEs) modified with self-assembled monolayers of 11-Mercaptoundecanoic acid (MUA). Commercially available gold SPEs are electrochemically characterized through experimental cyclic voltammetry and EIS measurements with 10 mM [Fe(CN)6]3−/4− redox couple in phosphate buffered saline before and after the surface immobilization of MUA at different concentrations. We design the multiphysics model through COMSOL Multiphysics® based on the 3D geometry of the devices under test. The model includes four different physics considering the metal/solution interface electrochemical phenomena, the ion and electron potentials and currents, and the measurement set-up. The model is calibrated through a set of experimental measurements, allowing the tuning of the parameters used by the model. We use the calibrated model to simulate the EIS response of MUA-modified SPEs, comparing the results with experimental data. The simulations fit the experimental curves well, following the variation of MUA concentration on the surface from 1 µM to 100 µM. The EIS parameters, retrieved through a CPE-modified Randles’ circuit, confirm the consistency with the experimental data. Notably, the simulated surface coverage estimates and the variation of charge transfer resistance due to MUA-immobilization are well matched with their experimental counterparts, reporting only a 2% difference and being consistent with the experimental electrochemical behavior of the SPEs.

The chemical reaction of ion-adsorption-type rare earth ore during the in situ leaching process is accompanied by ion migration and charge movement, making the leaching process electrochemical in nature. The chemical reaction rate plays an important role in the leaching rate of rare earth elements. In this work, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was used to reveal the characteristics of electrical resistance alterations and leaching rate of rare earth elements during in situ leaching. The equivalent circuit model of the leaching process was established, and two critical parameters of solution resistance Rs and charge transfer resistance Rt were analyzed to reflect the electrochemical characteristics. According to the characteristics of electrical resistance alteration, the leaching process was divided into four stages: wetting, reaction, equilibrium, and top water stage. The resistance parameters Rs and Rt decreased first and then increased during the leaching process. The maximum value of Rs was 1330 Ω∙cm2 at the end of the top water stage, and the minimum value was 125 Ω∙cm2 at the beginning of the equilibrium stage. The maximum value of Rt was 8310 Ω∙cm2 at the beginning of the leaching stage, and the minimum value was 21 Ω∙cm2 at the end of the reaction stage. Rs and Rt were negatively correlated with the pore size and chemical reaction rate during leaching. With an increasing pore size and reaction rate, the resistance parameters decrease. This study provides a new idea for the intelligent monitoring of rare earth ore.

In this paper, the potential of marine algae to act as sensitizers is systematically studied and presented. We aim to find a feasible financial strategy to enhance the global efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC). Algae are mainly composed of chlorophylls, carotenoids, flavonoids, and Betalains, which are essential pigments that confer unique characteristics that are required in natural sensitizers. Therefore, this review aims to unveil and understand the underlying mechanism between algae pigments and photoelectrodes and to conduct a comprehensive analysis to determine the effect of algae dye on light absorption efficiency and electron transport. The structural, morphological, optical, and electrochemical impedance properties are deeply analyzed, and we show the current opportunities for natural dyes to be used in energy technologies through DSSC. A comparison of several bibliographic sources dealing with DSSC based on algae provided a general overview of the improvements in factors such as the recombination times, the filling factor, and the Voc values. The contributions of this paper relate to the conversion efficiency and future applications in the DSSC field. Finally, this review exemplifies that the nature of the pigment affects the photophysical properties of the cell. Thus, this paper may contribute to future investigations of DSSC when choosing efficient natural dyes according to their optical and electronic properties. Therefore, this work provides the knowledge required to efficiently merge materials and dyes, in which photovoltaic energy systems’ reproducibility and scalability still represent a challenge. Lastly, this document discusses the natural pigments’ stability and the approaches to improve their chemical stability.

Aqueous zinc ions lower the corrosion rate of Alloy 600, which helps lower the radiation dose rate in pressurized water reactors (PWRs). The influence of zinc on the electrochemical behavior of Alloy 600 in PWR primary water (PW) at 320 °C was investigated using a combination of electron microscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Secondary electron microscopy (SEM) and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM)/energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) indicated duplex surface films were formed on the Alloy 600 in PWR PW with and without 100 ppb of zinc. There was no effect of zinc on the chromium-rich inner layer (IL) (of Cr2O3 and/or CrOOH). Zinc had a significant effect on the outer layer (OL). In the absence of zinc, a highly porous OL formed that was mostly composed of nickel oxide whiskers. In the presence of zinc, a zinc-containing, denser OL of oxide was formed. The EIS data were acquired in laboratory simulated PWR PW at 320 °C with and without 100 ppb zinc. The spectra were measured at nine different values of potential that spanned a 500 mV-wide range. The EIS indicated there was no effect of zinc on the oxidation rate of metals at the alloy/IL interface nor on the transport of ions through the IL. Zinc lowered the corrosion rate because the dense OL inhibited the release of nickel ions from the IL into the solution.

Wirobond® C is a commercial dental casting alloy suitable for the fabrication of crowns, bridges, and metal ceramic restorations. This study aims to investigate the effect of ready-to-use Listerine® and Meridol® mouthwashes and sodium fluoride on the resistance of CoCrMo dental alloys to electrochemical corrosion in artificial saliva at 37 °C. SEM, EDS, SKP, and microhardness investigations were carried out to characterize the material under study. The in vitro corrosion resistance of the CoCrMo alloy was conducted using the open-circuit potential method, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and anodic polarization curves. The presence of Co 59.8(8) wt.%, Cr 31.5(4) wt.%, and Mo 8.8(6) wt.% was confirmed. The CoCrMo alloy was characterized by a Vickers microhardness value of 445(31) µHV0.3. Based on the EIS data, the capacitive behavior and high corrosion resistance of the CoCrMo alloy were revealed. The kinetics of pitting corrosion in the artificial saliva were lower after being modified with NaF, Listerine®, and Meridol® mouthwashes. The potentiodynamic characteristics revealed the passive behavior of the CoCrMo alloy in all solutions. Based on the SKP measurements of the CoCrMo alloy after corrosion tests, the effect of artificial saliva modification on the electronic properties of Bego Wirobond® C dental alloy was found.

The corrosion of steel in reinforced concrete exposed to marine environments or winter de-icing poses a significant threat. However, evaluation of it is challenging due to variables such as environmental conditions and concrete properties. Many studies in concrete engineering have introduced a performance-based approach, evaluating structures with experimental data by considering the environmental conditions. Electrochemical techniques, including half-cell potential (HP), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and galvanostatic pulse (GP), are widely used for studying steel corrosion in concrete. Despite the widespread use, corrosion measurements have still limitations due to ambiguous impedance results from concrete presence, equipment sensitivity, and analysis flexibility. The corrosion of steel in chloride-laden concrete was assessed in well-controlled laboratory conditions using EIS and GP before field application. The results showed that measured values for corrosion parameters were consistent with each other (within 10% discrepancy). Corrosion initiation times varied from 171 to 319 days depending on the techniques, the differences attributed to measurement periods, and the condition of the steel. In addition, it was confirmed that the corrosion potential for HP was significantly correlated with the time constant for GP. This study demonstrated these techniques to improve both the understanding of the corrosion process and the accuracy of the calculated corrosion rate.

The pitting corrosion of orthodontic apparatus elements in the oral environment is an interest of both clinicians and scientists dealing with the assessment of the biocompatibility of medical materials. This work presents a study on the effect of ready-to-use Listerine® and Meridol® mouthwashes and sodium fluoride on the resistance of the commercial Remanium®-type orthodontic archwire to pitting corrosion in artificial saliva at 37 °C. XRD, SEM, EDS, mechanical properties, and microhardness measurements were used to characterize the archwire. The in vitro corrosion resistance of the archwire was examined using the open-circuit potential method, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and anodic polarization curves. The physicochemical characteristics confirmed the presence of a bi-phase alloy with a mixed austenite/ferrite structure containing Fe 74.4(7) at.%, Cr 18.4(4) at.%, and Ni 7.2(4) at.%. The Fe–Cr–Ni alloy was characterized by high tensile strength and Vickers microhardness. EIS revealed the capacitive behavior with high corrosion resistance. It was found that the kinetics of pitting corrosion in the artificial saliva decreased in the presence of NaF and mouthwashes. The potentiodynamic characteristics confirmed the decrease in susceptibility to pitting corrosion after the modification of artificial saliva. The pitting corrosion mechanism of the self-passive oxide layer on the surface of the Fe–Cr–Ni electrode in the biological environment containing chloride ions was discussed in detail. Mechanical properties after corrosion tests were weakened.

The conventional Ni–YSZ (yttria-stabilized zirconia) fuel electrode experiences severe degradation due to Ni- agglomeration and migration away from the electrolyte. Therefore, herein, we have considered Ni free electrodes, i.e., La0.6Sr0.4MnO3-δ (LSM)-based perovskite oxides as fuel electrodes. The LSM perovskite phase transforms into a Ruddlesden–Popper LSM (RP-LSM) phase with exsolved MnOx under reducing atmospheres. The RP-LSM is mainly interesting due to its good electrical conductivity, redox stability, and acceptable electrochemical behaviour. In this work, we synthesized the LSM powder and characterized it using several methods including X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetry analyses (TGA), four-probe conductivity, and scanning electron microscope with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX). Finally, the electrolyte-supported single cells were fabricated and electrochemically characterized using AC and DC techniques under electrolysis conditions. In addition to pure LSM fuel electrodes, we have also investigated the electrochemical behaviour of LSM + YSZ (50:50) and LSM + GDC (50:50) composite fuel electrodes. The single cells containing LSM and LSM + GDC fuel electrodes show higher cell performance than LSM + YSZ. For instance, current densities of 1, 1.03, and 0.51 A·cm−2 at 1.5 V are obtained for LSM, LSM + GDC, and LSM + YSZ fuel electrodes containing single cells, respectively, with a 50% N2 and 50% H2O feed gas mixture. Moreover, the performance of the cell was also investigated under co-electrolysis with 50% CO2 and 50% H2O and under direct CO2 electrolysis conditions with 100% CO2 fuel gas.

In this report, natural dyes extracted from three different, black-colored fruits were used as photosensitizers for the construction of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The natural dyes were extracted from the dark-colored peels of jamun (also known as Indian black plum), black plum, and blackberry fruit. These natural dyes contain polyphenolic compounds—most prominently anthocyanins—which interact strongly with titanium dioxide (TiO2) semiconductors and accordingly enhance the efficiency of DSSCs. The natural dyes extracted from the various fruits were characterized utilizing UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy. The interaction between the dyes and TiO2 was monitored with FTIR and Raman spectroscopy. The fabricated DSSCs were characterized via current–voltage measurements and electrochemical impedance analysis. DSSCs fabricated with jamun produced the highest efficiency of 1.09% with a short-circuit current of 7.84 mA/cm2, an open-circuit voltage of 0.45 V, and a fill factor of 0.31. The efficiencies of the DSSCs from black plum and blackberry were 0.55% and 0.38%, respectively. The flow of charge occurring at the interfaces between the natural dye and the TiO2 layers were investigated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first to directly compare three distinct types of black DSSCs. Computation analysis was also carried out utilizing SCAPS-1D software (version 3.3.07), which revealed how the type of defects in the devices impacts their performance.

This study describes the single-step synthesis of a mesoporous layered nickel-chromium-sulfide (NCS) and its hybridization with single-layered graphene oxide (GO) using a facile, inexpensive chemical method. The conductive GO plays a critical role in improving the physicochemical and electrochemical properties of hybridized NCS/reduced GO (NCSG) materials. The optimized mesoporous nanohybrid NCSG is obtained when hybridized with 20% GO, and this material exhibits a very high specific surface area of 685.84 m2/g compared to 149.37 m2/g for bare NCS, and the pore diameters are 15.81 and 13.85 nm, respectively. The three-fold superior specific capacity of this optimal NCSG (1932 C/g) is demonstrated over NCS (676 C/g) at a current density of 2 A/g. A fabricated hybrid supercapacitor (HSC) reveals a maximum specific capacity of 224 C/g at a 5 A/g current density. The HSC reached an outstanding energy density of 105 Wh/kg with a maximum power density of 11,250 W/kg. A 4% decrement was observed during the cyclic stability study of the HSC over 5000 successive charge–discharge cycles at a 10 A/g current density. These results suggest that the prepared nanohybrid NCSG is an excellent cathode material for gaining a high energy density in an HSC.

An electrochemically active polymer, polythionine (PTN), was synthesized in natural deep eutectic solvent (NADES) via multiple potential scans and characterized using cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). NADES consists of citric acid monohydrate, glucose, and water mixed in the molar ratio of 1:1:6. Electrodeposited PTN film was then applied for the electrostatic accumulation of DNA from salmon sperm and used for the sensitive detection of the anticancer drug epirubicin. Its reaction with DNA resulted in regular changes in the EIS parameters that made it possible to determine 1.0–100 µM of epirubicin with the limit of detection (LOD) of 0.3 µM. The DNA sensor developed was successfully applied for the detection of epirubicin in spiked samples of artificial and natural urine and saliva, with recovery ranging from 90 to 109%. The protocol of the DNA sensor assembling utilized only one drop of reactants and was performed with a minimal number of steps. Together with a simple measurement protocol requiring 100 µL of the sample, this offers good opportunities for the further use of the DNA sensor in monitoring the drug level in biological samples, which is necessary in oncology treatment and for the pharmacokinetics studies of new antitumor drugs.

The growing interest in Na-ion batteries as a “beyond lithium” technologies for energy storage drives the research for high-performance and environment-friendly materials. Na2Ti3O7 (NTO) as an eco-friendly, low-cost anode material shows a very low working potential of 0.3 V vs. Na+/Na but suffers from poor cycling stability, which properties can be significantly influenced by materials synthesis and treatment. Thus, in this work, the influence of the calcination time on the electrochemical performance and the reaction mechanism during cycling were investigated. NTO heat-treated for 48 h at 800 °C (NTO-48h) demonstrated enhanced cycling performance in comparison to NTO heat-treated for only 8 h (NTO-8h). The pristine material was thoroughly characterized by X-ray diffraction, laser granulometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and specific surface area measurements. The reaction mechanisms induced by sodiation/desodiation and cycling were investigated by operando XRD. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was used to evidence the evolution of the solid electrolyte interface layer (SEI) and modification of charge transfer resistances as well as the influence of cycling on capacity decay. The evolution of the crystallographic structure of NTO-48h revealed a more ordered structure and lower surface contamination compared to NTO-8h. Moreover, the residual Na4Ti3O7 phase detected after the sodium extraction step in NTO-8h seems correlated to the lower electrochemical performance of NTO-8h compared to NTO-48h.

Impedimetric biosensors measure changes in the electrical impedance due to a biochemical process, typically the binding of a biomolecule to a bioreceptor on the sensor surface. Nanomaterials can be employed to modify the biosensor’s surface to increase the surface area available for biorecognition events, thereby improving the sensitivity and detection limits of the biosensor. Various nanomaterials, such as carbon nanotubes, carbon nanofibers, quantum dots, metal nanoparticles, and graphene oxide nanoparticles, have been investigated for impedimetric biosensors. These nanomaterials have yielded promising results in improving sensitivity, selectivity, and overall biosensor performance. Hence, they offer a wide range of possibilities for developing advanced biosensing platforms that can be employed in various fields, including healthcare, environmental monitoring, and food safety. This review focuses on the recent developments in nanoparticle-functionalized electrochemical-impedimetric biosensors.

This investigation explores the potential of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in evaluating graphene-based cementitious nanocomposites, focusing on their physical and structural properties, i.e., electrical resistivity, porosity, and fracture toughness. EIS was employed to study cement mixtures with varying graphene nanoplatelet (xGnP) concentrations (0.05–0.40% per dry cement weight), whereas flexural tests assessed fracture toughness and porosimetry analyses investigated the structural characteristics. The research demonstrated that the electrical resistivity initially decreased with increasing xGnP content, leveling off at higher concentrations. The inclusion of xGnPs correlated with an increase in the total porosity of the cement mixtures, which was indicated by both EIS and porosimetry measurements. Finally, a linear correlation emerged between fracture toughness and electrical resistivity, contributing also to underscore the use of EIS as a potent non-destructive tool for evaluating the physical and mechanical properties of conductive nano-reinforced cementitious nanocomposites.

The purpose of this study is to establish a life prediction model of lithium-thiocarbonyl chloride batteries by semi-empirical method. In the experiment, accelerated life tests on several groups of batteries at different temperatures were conducted. After a period of operation in the range from 25 °C to 74 °C, it was found that the higher the temperature, the less the remaining capacity of the batteries. According to the study of the battery aging mechanism, the characteristic parameter impedance of an aging battery would change exponentially with the increase of storage time and environmental temperature. The established life prediction model showed that the change in battery impedance spectrum had a good law, which made it possible to predict the state of charge (SOC) of the battery according to the local change characteristics of the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) spectrum. The experimental data were compared with the fitted prediction curve, and the maximum deviation of the prediction was only 4.1036%, which indicated that the constructed model had high accuracy.

Electrophysiological mapping (EM) using acute electrode probes is a common procedure performed during functional neurosurgery. Due to their constructive specificities, the EM probes are lagging in innovative enhancements. This work addressed complementing a clinically employed EM probe with carbonic and circumferentially segmented macrocontacts that are operable both for neurophysiological sensing (“recording”) of local field potentials (LFP) and for test stimulation. This paper illustrates in-depth the development that is based on the direct writing of functional materials. The unconventional fabrication processes were optimized on planar geometry and then transferred to the cylindrically thin probe body. We report and discuss the constructive concept and architecture of the probe, characteristics of the electrochemical interface deduced from voltammetry and chronopotentiometry, and the results of in vitro and in vivo recording and pulse stimulation tests. Two- and three-directional macrocontacts were added on probes having shanks of 550 and 770 μm diameters and 10–23 cm lengths. The graphitic material presents a ~2.7 V wide, almost symmetric water electrolysis window, and an ultra-capacitive charge transfer. When tested with clinically relevant 150 μs biphasic current pulses, the interfacial polarization stayed safely away from the water window for pulse amplitudes up to 9 mA (135 μC/cm2). The in vivo experiments on adult rat models confirmed the high-quality sensing of LFPs. Additionally, the in vivo-prevailing increase in the electrode impedance and overpotential are discussed and modeled by an ionic mobility-reducing spongiform structure; this restricted diffusion model gives new applicative insight into the in vivo-uprisen stimulation overpotential.

The main objective of this article is to provide new information on the effects of mechanical pretreatment of AZ80 magnesium alloy ground with SiC emery papers of different grain sizes on the plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) process and corrosion properties of AZ80 in 0.1 M NaCl solution. Then, the roughness of the coated samples was measured by confocal microscopy. The corrosion properties of the ground and coated surfaces were determined by potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) within 1 h of exposure, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was performed during 168 h of exposure at laboratory temperature. Consequently, the obtained results of the PDP measurements were evaluated by the Tafel analysis and the EIS evaluation was performed by the equivalent circuit analysis through Nyquist diagrams. The morphology and structure of PEO coatings were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) through the secondary imaging technology, and the presence of certain elements in PEO coatings was analyzed by EDS analysis.

A taste sensor with global selectivity can be used to discriminate taste of foods and provide evaluations. Interfaces that could interact with broad food ingredients are beneficial for data collection. Here, we prepared electrochemically reduced graphene oxide (ERGO)-modified interdigital electrodes. The interfaces of modified electrodes showed good sensitivity towards cooking condiments in mixed multi-ingredients solutions under electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). A database of EIS of cooking condiments was established. Based on the principal component analysis (PCA), subsets of three taste dimensions were classified, which could distinguish an unknown dish from a standard dish. Further, we demonstrated the effectiveness of the electrodes on a typical dish of scrambled eggs with tomato. Our kind of electronic tongue did not measure the quantitation of each ingredient, instead relying on the database and classification algorithm. This method is facile and offers a universal approach to simultaneously identifying multiple ingredients.

Gas-fed reactors for CO2 reduction processes are a solid technology to mitigate CO2 accumulation in the atmosphere. However, since it is necessary to feed them with a pure CO2 stream, a highly energy-demanding process is required to separate CO2 from the flue gasses. Recently introduced bicarbonate zero-gap flow reactors are a valid solution to integrate carbon capture and valorization, with them being able to convert the CO2 capture medium (i.e., the bicarbonate solution) into added-value chemicals, such as CO, thus avoiding this expensive separation process. We report here a study on the influence of the electrode structure on the performance of a bicarbonate reactor in terms of Faradaic efficiency, activity, and CO2 utilization. In particular, the effect of catalyst mass loading and electrode permeability on bicarbonate electrolysis was investigated by exploiting three commercial carbon supports, and the results obtained were deepened via electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, which is introduced for the first time in the field of bicarbonate electrolyzers. As an outcome of the study, a novel low-loaded silver-based electrode fabricated via the sputtering deposition technique is proposed. The silver mass loading was optimized by increasing it from 116 μg/cm2 to 565 μg/cm2, thereby obtaining an important enhancement in selectivity (from 55% to 77%) and activity, while a further rise to 1.13 mg/cm2 did not provide significant improvements. The tremendous effect of the electrode permeability on activity and proficiency in releasing CO2 from the bicarbonate solution was shown. Hence, an increase in electrode permeability doubled the activity and boosted the production of in situ CO2 by 40%. The optimized Ag-electrode provided Faradaic efficiencies for CO close to 80% at a cell voltage of 3 V and under ambient conditions, with silver loading of 565 μg/cm2, the lowest value ever reported in the literature so far.

Asymmetric supercapacitors (ASCs) with two dissimilar electrodes are known to exhibit relatively moderate energy and power densities. If electrodes derived from earth-abundant materials or renewable resources such as lignocellulosic biomass (LCB) are used for fabrication, energy storage systems are expected to become less expensive and more sustainable. Hybrid electrode materials have advantages such as higher surface area, better chemical stability, and superior energy density. This study reports on the synthesis of a novel hybrid electrode material containing porous carbon (POC) and copper ferrite, which is designated as POC@Cu-ferrite, and its electrochemical performance in ASC configuration. Corn stover derived hydrochar is utilized for the sol–gel synthesis of POC@Cu-ferrite hybrid material using earth-abundant Cu and Fe-based precursors. This material is characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area analyzer, and scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM/TEM). As-synthesized Cu-ferrite is found to contain 89.2% CuFe2O4 and 10.8% Fe2O3, whereas other phases such as Fe3O4, CuFeO2, and CuO are observed for the POC@Cu-ferrite. BET-specific surface area (SSA) and pore volume of POC@Cu-ferrite are observed as 1068 m2/g and 0.72 cm3/g, respectively. POC@Cu-ferrite hybrid electrode is used with POC opposite electrode to fabricate ASC, which is tested using Gamry G-300 potentiostat/galvanostat/ZRA to obtain cyclic voltammetry (CV) profiles and galvanostatic charge–discharge (GCD) plots. ASC is also prepared using Cu-ferrite and POC materials and its specific capacitance and stability are compared with ASCs prepared with POC@Cu-ferrite and POC or graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) electrodes. POC@Cu-ferrite hybrid electrode is found to be superior with a 2-fold higher capacitance and significant electrochemical stability over 100 GCD cycles as compared to the Cu-ferrite electrode.

Given the increasing use of lithium-ion batteries, which is driven in particular by electromobility, the characterization of cells in production and application plays a decisive role in quality assurance. The detection of defects particularly motivates the optimization and development of innovative characterization methods, with simultaneous testing of multiple cells in the context of multi-cell setups having been researched to economize on the number of cell test channels required. In this work, an experimental study is presented demonstrating the influence of a defect type in one cell on five remaining interconnected cells in eight combinatorially varied topologies using galvanostatic electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results show that regularities related to the interconnection position are revealed when considering the change in the specific resistance ZIM,min at the transition from the charge transfer to the diffusion region between the reference and fault measurements, allowing it to function as a defect identifier in the present scenario. These results and the extensive measurement data provided can serve as a basis for the evaluation and design of multi-cell setups used for simultaneous impedance-based lithium-ion cell characterizations.

Portland cement is extensively used for the conditioning of radioactive waste. However, its high alkalinity is a serious obstacle to the stabilization of waste containing aluminum metal since aluminum is oxidized by the pore solution with the production of dihydrogen. This work investigates the potential of an alternative binder, magnesium potassium phosphate (MKP) cement, for the stabilization of Al–Mg alloys comprising 2 to 4.5 wt% of Mg and other metallic impurities. The objective is to assess the influence of the alloy composition on its reactivity in the cementitious matrix at earlier ages, as well as at later ages, when the cement has reached a significant reaction degree. Two complementary techniques are used. Gas chromatography shows that the dihydrogen release, resulting from the corrosion process, is not influenced by the magnesium content in the alloy. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy provides qualitative information about the corrosion but also makes it possible to assess the corrosion current using an equivalent electrical circuit linked to the kinetic parameters of the postulated corrosion mechanism. Over a one-year period, the corrosion current of the alloys, regardless of their Mg content, is reduced by almost three orders of magnitude in MKP mortar as compared to Portland-cement-based mortar.

Biofilms are complex communities of microorganisms that can form on various surfaces, including medical devices, industrial equipment, and natural environments. The presence of biofilms can lead to a range of problems, including infections, reduced efficiency and failure of equipment, biofouling or spoilage, and environmental damage. As a result, there is a growing need for tools to measure and monitor levels of biofilms in various biomedical, pharmaceutical, and food processing settings. In recent years, electrochemical impedance sensing has emerged as a promising approach for real-time, non-destructive, and rapid monitoring of biofilms. This article sheds light on electrochemical sensing for measuring biofilms, including its high sensitivity, non-destructive nature, versatility, low cost, and real-time monitoring capabilities. We also discussed some electrochemical sensing applications for studying biofilms in medical, environmental, and industrial settings. This article also presents future perspectives for research that would lead to the creation of reliable, quick, easy-to-use biosensors mounted on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs), utilizing artificial intelligence-based terminologies to detect biofilms.

The effects of the concentration of NaCl solutions on the corrosion resistance of granular CoCrFeNiV0.5 and dendritic CrFeCoNiV high-entropy alloys were studied. The polarization behavior of CoCrFeNiV0.5 and CrFeCoNiV alloys in deaerated 0.5 M and 1 M sodium chloride solution at different temperatures was measured by a constant galvanostatic/potentiometric. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was used to examine CoCrFeNiV0.5 CrFeCoNiV alloys in 0.5 M and 1 M NaCl solutions. The results indicated that the CoCrFeNiV0.5 alloy showed a better corrosion resistance than that of CrFeCoNiV alloy because the dendritic structure of CrFeCoNiV had too many σ/FCC interfaces. The critical pitting temperatures (CPTs) of the alloys under different applied potentials were also analyzed. All of the results proved that CrFeCoNiV0.5 alloy had better corrosion resistance in 0.5 M and 1 M NaCl solutions.

The electrocatalytic conversion of CO2 on a Cu electrode has the potential to produce valuable chemicals such as hydrocarbons and oxygenated compounds. While the influence of electrolyte cation on the activity and selectivity of the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) on Cu has been widely observed, the specific mechanism through which cation species affect the CO2RR remains unclear and subject to debate. In this work, the CO2RR in the carbonate electrolytes containing different alkali metals (Li+, Na+, K+, Rb+, and Cs+) was investigated at potentials from −0.1 to −1.1 V (vs. RHE) over a Cu electrode using electrochemical techniques. Charge transfer kinetics, adsorption of species, and mass transport were considered comprehensively during the analysis. It is found that several factors can play a role in the CO2RR, including hydrated cation adsorption, preferential hydrolysis, and interaction between the cation and adsorbed species, with the dominating factor determined by the external bias and cation species. Consequently, a coherent interpretation of the influence of electrolyte cations on the intrinsic kinetics of the CO2RR has been put forward. We envision that these insights will greatly contribute to the development of efficient catalytic systems and the optimization of catalytic conditions, thereby advancing progress toward commercial applications in this field.

The early detection at low concentration, by non-invasive methods, of cardiac biomarkers in physiological fluids has attracted the interest of researchers over the last decade. This enables early diagnosis and prediction of the first signs of heart failure (HF). In this respect, the analysis of human saliva remains the most suitable medium for this non-invasive approach, as it contains a highly interesting biological matrix for general health and disease monitoring. In this work, we developed a highly sensitive multiplexed immunosensor for direct simultaneous detection of both N-terminal Natriuretic Peptide (NT-proBNP) and Cortisol in human artificial saliva (AS). The developed biosensor platform based on silicon nitride substrate was composed from four gold working microelectrodes (WEs) and an integrated counter and reference microelectrode. Gold WEs were biofunctionalized through carboxyl diazonium (4-APA) to immobilize both anti-NT-proBNP and anti-Cortisol antibodies for simultaneous detection. The electroaddressing of the 4-APA onto the gold WE surfaces was realized with cyclic voltammetry (CV), while the interaction between antibodies and antigens in PBS was monitored using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The antigen detection in human AS was realized with EIS combined with the standard addition method. The immunosensor was highly sensitive and selective toward the corresponding biomarkers in both PBS and artificial human saliva as well as in the presence of other potential interfering biomarkers such as tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin-10 (IL-10). The limit of detection (LOD) was at 0.2 pg/mL for NT-proBNP within the range of 0.03 to 0.9 pg/mL, while the LOD for Cortisol was 0.06 ng/mL within the range of 0.02 to 0.6 ng/mL for Cortisol in artificial saliva. The developed immunosensor is very promising for significant detection in physiological media, and time reducing as it allows the simultaneous detection of various biomarkers.

Controlling water and food contamination by pathogenic organisms requires quick, simple, and low-cost methods. Using the affinity between mannose and type I fimbriae in the cell wall of Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria as evaluation elements compared to the conventional plate counting technique enables a reliable sensing platform for the detection of bacteria. In this study, a simple new sensor was developed based on electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) for rapid and sensitive detection of E. coli. The biorecogniton layer of the sensor was formed by covalent attachment of p-carboxyphenylamino mannose (PCAM) to gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) electrodeposited on the surface of a glassy carbon electrode (GCE). The resultant structure of PCAM was characterized and confirmed using a Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer (FTIR). The developed biosensor demonstrated a linear response with a logarithm of bacterial concentration (R2 = 0.998) in the range of 1.3 × 10 1~1.3 × 106 CFU·mL−1 with the limit of detection of 2 CFU·mL−1 within 60 min. The sensor did not generate any significant signals with two non-target strains, demonstrating the high selectivity of the developed biorecognition chemistry. The selectivity of the sensor and its applicability to analysis of the real samples were investigated in tap water and low-fat milk samples. Overall, the developed sensor showed to be promising for the detection of E. coli pathogens in water and low-fat milk due to its high sensitivity, short detection time, low cost, high specificity, and user-friendliness.

High-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells (HT-PEMFC) directly convert hydrogen and oxygen to produce electric power at a temperature significantly higher than conventional low-temperature fuel cells. This achievement is due to the use of a phosphoric acid-doped polybenzimidazole membrane that can safely operate up to 200 °C. PBI-based HT-PEMFCs suffer severe performance limitations, despite the expectation that a higher operating temperature should positively impact both fuel cell efficiency and power density, e.g., improved ORR electrocatalyst activity or absence of liquid water flooding. These limitations must be overcome to comply with the requirements in mobility and stationary applications. In this work a systematic analysis of an HT-PEMFC is performed by means of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), aiming to individuate the contributions of components, isolate physical phenomena, and understand the role of the operating conditions. The EIS analysis indicates that increases in both the charge transfer and mass transport impedances in the spectrum are negatively impacted by air humidification and consistently introduce a loss in performance. These findings suggest that water vapor reduces phosphoric acid density, which in turn leads to liquid flooding of the catalyst layers and increases the poisoning of the electrocatalyst by phosphoric acid anions, thus hindering performance.

In this paper, the influence of a nickel binder metal and molybdenum carbide as an additional alloying element on the microstructure and corrosion behavior of WC-based cemented carbides, processed by conventional powder metallurgy, was studied, and a comparison with conventional cemented carbide (WC-Co) was carried out. The sintered alloys were characterized, before and after corrosive tests, by analyses using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The corrosion resistance of the cemented carbides was investigated by open circuit potential, potentiodynamic polarization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in a 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution. The WC-NiMo cemented carbides showed microstructures similar to those of WC-Co; however, pores and binder islands were observed in the microstructures. The corrosion tests showed promising results, the WC-NiMo cemented carbide showed superior corrosion resistance and higher passivation capacity than the WC-Co cemented carbide. The WC-NiMo alloy showed a higher EOC ≈−0.18 V vs. Ag|AgCl|KCl3mol/L than the WC-Co (EOC≈−0.45 V vs. Ag|AgCl|KCl3mol/L). The potentiodynamic polarization curves showed lower current density values throughout the potential range for the WC-NiMo alloy, and it was observed that Ecorr was less negative (≈−0.416 V vs. Ag|AgCl|KCl3mol/L) than for WC-Co (≈−0.543 V vs. V vs. Ag|AgCl|KCl3mol/L). The EIS analysis confirmed low rate corrosion of WC-NiMo associated with the formation of a passive thin layer. This alloy showed a higher Rct (1970.70 Ω).

Pure titanium (Ti) is investigated in a pre-clinical study in Hank’s biological solution using electrochemical methods, open circuit potential, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy to highlight the time effect in extreme body conditions, such as inflammatory diseases, on degradability due to corrosion processes occurring on the titanium implant. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) data are presented as Nyquist and Bode plots. The results show the increasing reactivity of titanium implants in the presence of hydrogen peroxide, which is an oxygen-reactive compound that describes inflammatory conditions. The polarization resistance, which results from electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements, declined dramatically from the highest value registered in Hank’s solution to smaller values registered in all solutions when different concentrations of hydrogen peroxide were tested. The EIS analysis provided insights into titanium’s in vitro corrosion behavior as an implanted biomaterial, which could not be solely obtained through potentiodynamic polarization testing.

The microstructures of porous electrodes in lithium-ion cells strongly affect their electrochemical performance. Experimental tomography techniques to investigate the microstructure during electrode development is costly and time consuming. To address this issue, a numerical method is presented to create a digital morphology to realize a realistic microstructure. In this study, the spherical harmonics in a straightforward mathematical approach are proposed to develop the virtual 3D morphology of the electrode’s heterogeneous structure. The introduced method offers a numerically light procedure which enables effective iterative virtual testing and optimization. The generated morphology model is parameterized to reproduce a NMC cathode microstructure observed in the literature. The electrode model allows evaluation of the spatially resolved geometric, transport and electric potential characteristics of the microstructure. The computed characteristics are employed to improve the parametrization of the continuum model as the most widely used physics-based model. For this purpose, the electrochemical impedance spectra of a lithium foil/separator/NMC half-cell is virtually modeled by heterogeneous and continuum approaches. Then, the modified continuum model is compared to the heterogeneous model as a benchmark, in terms of the kinetics and transport characteristics underlying the electrochemical impedance spectra. The modified continuum model shows an improved response in both frequency and time domains.

Membrane-disrupting lactylates are an important class of surfactant molecules that are esterified adducts of fatty acid and lactic acid and possess industrially attractive properties, such as high antimicrobial potency and hydrophilicity. Compared with antimicrobial lipids such as free fatty acids and monoglycerides, the membrane-disruptive properties of lactylates have been scarcely investigated from a biophysical perspective, and addressing this gap is important to build a molecular-level understanding of how lactylates work. Herein, using the quartz crystal microbalance–dissipation (QCM-D) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques, we investigated the real-time, membrane-disruptive interactions between sodium lauroyl lactylate (SLL)—a promising lactylate with a 12-carbon-long, saturated hydrocarbon chain—and supported lipid bilayer (SLB) and tethered bilayer lipid membrane (tBLM) platforms. For comparison, hydrolytic products of SLL that may be generated in biological environments, i.e., lauric acid (LA) and lactic acid (LacA), were also tested individually and as a mixture, along with a structurally related surfactant (sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS). While SLL, LA, and SDS all had equivalent chain properties and critical micelle concentration (CMC) values, our findings reveal that SLL exhibits distinct membrane-disruptive properties that lie in between the rapid, complete solubilizing activity of SDS and the more modest disruptive properties of LA. Interestingly, the hydrolytic products of SLL, i.e., the LA + LacA mixture, induced a greater degree of transient, reversible membrane morphological changes but ultimately less permanent membrane disruption than SLL. These molecular-level insights support that careful tuning of antimicrobial lipid headgroup properties can modulate the spectrum of membrane-disruptive interactions, offering a pathway to design surfactants with tailored biodegradation profiles and reinforcing that SLL has attractive biophysical merits as a membrane-disrupting antimicrobial drug candidate.

Poly-3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene:polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) is a widely used conducting polymer with versatile applications in organic electronics. The addition of various salts during the preparation of PEDOT:PSS films can significantly influence their electrochemical properties. In this study, we systematically investigated the effects of different salt additives on the electrochemical properties, morphology, and structure of PEDOT:PSS films using a variety of experimental techniques, including cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, operando conductance measurements and in situ UV-VIS spectroelectrochemistry. Our results showed that the electrochemical properties of the films are closely related to the nature of the additives used and allowed us to establish a probable relationship with the Hofmeister series. The correlation coefficients obtained for the capacitance and Hofmeister series descriptors indicate a strong relationship between the salt additives and the electrochemical activity of PEDOT:PSS films. The work allows us to better understand the processes occurring within PEDOT:PSS films during modification with different salts. It also demonstrates the potential for fine-tuning the properties of PEDOT:PSS films by selecting appropriate salt additives. Our findings can contribute to the development of more efficient and tailored PEDOT:PSS-based devices for a wide range of applications, including supercapacitors, batteries, electrochemical transistors, and sensors.

Tartaric-sulfuric acid anodizing (TSA) has been selected by the aerospace industry to replace Cr(VI)-based anodizing treatments of aluminum alloys. Modification of the bath composition can result in the necessity to revise the process conditions, including the time necessary to obtain the desired properties of the anodized layer. This study focuses on the microstructure and immersion stability of the pilot scale anodized AA2024 aluminum alloy, with anodizing times of 25 min and 45 min. The layer structure was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and glow discharge optical emission spectrometry (GD-OES). The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was used to evaluate the corrosion resistance and immersion stability of the samples in 0.01 M NaCl solution. The density of pores formed in the 45 min anodized samples was higher which correlated with higher impedance modulus at equivalent immersion time and higher thickness of the oxide layer. Contact angle measurements demonstrated better wettability of the 45 min anodized sample. The results suggest that 45 min anodizing offers higher corrosion resistance and better initial adhesion with subsequent post-treatment such as sealing or painting.

The assembling of thiacalix[4]arene-based dendrimers in cone, partial cone, and 1,3-alternate configuration on the surface of a glassy carbon electrode coated with carbon black or multiwalled carbon nanotubes has been characterized using cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. Native and damaged DNA were electrostatically accumulated on the modifier layer. The influence of the charge of the redox indicator and of the macrocycle/DNA ratio was quantified and the roles of the electrostatic interactions and of the diffusional transfer of the redox indicator to the electrode interface indicator access were established. The developed DNA sensors were tested on discrimination of native, thermally denatured, and chemically damaged DNA and on the determination of doxorubicin as the model intercalator. The limit of detection of doxorubicin established for the biosensor based on multi-walled carbon nanotubes was equal to 1.0 pM with recovery from spiked human serum of 105–120%. After further optimization of the assembling directed towards the stabilization of the signal, the developed DNA sensors can find application in the preliminary screening of antitumor drugs and thermal damage of DNA. They can also be applied for testing potential drug/DNA nanocontainers as future delivery systems.

The goal of this work was to predict the dynamic charge acceptance (DCA) for cells using different additives on the negative electrode from the evaluation of small-signal measurements by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Thereby, various operating points were evaluated, such as state of charge (SoC) and prior usage (charge or discharge). The 2V test cells under investigation utilized plates of enhanced flooded 3P2N battery cells (EFB). They contained three positive and two negative electrodes. The latter varied in their additive composition. In total, eight different negative electrodes were investigated, five including specially synthesized amorphous carbon as an additive, two with unknown additive mixes, and one including a commercially available carbon black. The best parameters for predicting the DCA were found within the first semicircle of the negative half-cell spectra measured during a superimposed charging current.
