With the installation of rubber isolation bearings in the upper and lower ground layers, an isolated step-terrace structure was created. Considering the ultimate bearing capacity of the rubber bearing under tension as the critical condition, a comprehensive framework was established to evaluate the overturning failure mechanisms present in isolated step-terrace structures. The bound of nominal aspect ratio was identified as the principal control index within this framework, which incorporates critical parameters such as height ratio (α), width ratio (β), vertical tensile stiffness to compressive stiffness ratio (γ), seismic coefficient (k), and nominal vertical compressive stress (σ0) to provide a thorough analysis of the structural responses and potential failure scenarios. In order to further investigate this matter, a scaled model of an isolated step-terrace concrete frame structure featuring two dropped layers and a single span within an 8° seismic fortification zone was meticulously crafted at a 1:10 similarity ratio. Subsequently, a series of shaking table tests were conducted to analyze the structural response under seismic excitation. The findings indicate that: utilizing the bound of nominal aspect ratio as a metric to gauge the anti-overturning capacity of isolated step-terrace structures is a justified approach. In instances where the height ratio remains constant, the bound of nominal aspect ratio for both positive and negative overturning trended upward with an increase in the width ratio. Notably, the bound of nominal aspect ratio for positive overturning consistently registered lower values compared to that of the negative overturning, underscoring the heightened susceptibility of step-terrace structures to positive overturning. Moreover, in scenarios characterized by higher height and width ratios, the structural integrity remained unscathed by any overturning effects arising from insufficient tensile strength in rubber bearings. Furthermore, the bound of nominal aspect ratio exhibited an ascending trend as the seismic coefficient, nominal vertical compressive stress, and vertical tensile stiffness to compressive stiffness ratio decreased. The outcomes derived from the shaking table test not only confirm the impressive seismic performance of the structure, but also, by closely examining the instantaneous stress variations within the upper and lower isolation layers of the model, substantiate the existence of a positive overturning hazard in scenarios marked by higher seismic coefficients (k). This observation aligns seamlessly with the theoretical projections, thereby substantiating the efficacy of the structural overturning failure theory through direct empirical verification.

L-shaped concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) columns, a kind of structural member appropriate for high-rise buildings, not only avoid the defect of conventional square columns protruding from the wall but also have the green and low-carbon properties of steel structures appropriate for fabricated construction. To learn more about their axial compression behavior, refined 3D finite element models were established using the general finite element software ABAQUS. The reliability of the models was subsequently verified based on failure tests and load–displacement relation tests on eight L-shaped specimens. The axial compression mechanism of L-shaped CFST columns was investigated using the verified finite element models. Further systematic parameter analysis was carried out to investigate the influence of parameters such as steel strength, concrete strength, length ratio of long limb to short limb, the angle between the two limbs, and combination methods on the axial compression behavior of L-shaped CFST columns. The results demonstrate that the angle between the two limbs has a significant impact on the stress distribution of concrete and steel pipes. The corner effect increases as the angle between the two limbs decreases. The combination of F-type specimens can better exert the constraint effect of steel pipes on concrete, while the triangular cavity of unequal-limb specimens and specimens with an included angle of 60° cannot effectively trigger the interaction between steel pipes and concrete. The initial stiffness of L-shaped CFST columns increases with an increase in concrete strength and a decrease in limb length ratio, which is not sensitive to changes in steel strength and the included angle. The peak bearing capacity of the specimens increases with increases in steel strength and concrete strength and a decrease in the limb length ratio. Compared to C-type and Z-type specimens, the initial stiffness of F-type specimens is slightly higher, and the peak bearing capacity is significantly increased.

This study presents novel life cycle assessment (LCA) findings on hydrochar production from Saudi-Arabia-based date palm fronds biomass waste using hydrothermal carbonization (HTC). The LCA procedure incorporated normalization, weighting, and improvement assessment. The system boundary encompassed water consumption and energy requirements within a lab setting representing a gate-to-gate process. The OpenLCA 1.11.0 software with the European Life Cycle Database 3.2 (ELCD 3.2) was utilized for the study and we employed the ReCiPe Midpoint (H) 2016 and Environmental Footprint 3.0 (EF 3.0) impact assessment methods. The results indicated that fossil fuel usage represented the most significant impact category with the HTC and drying processes identified as major contributors. It was also observed that the HTC process exerted far greater detrimental impacts on the environment than the biomass grinding process. The overwhelming impact of fossil fuel resources could be mitigated by optimizing the batches of biomass or hydrochar samples in each operation, which could alleviate fossil fuel consumption by up to 94%. The findings emphasize the need for targeted interventions to mitigate the environmental burden and contribute to sustainable hydrochar production.

L-shaped concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) columns represent a valuable structural element with an L-shaped cross-section, primarily employed in the corner columns of framed structures. These columns offer several advantages, including space efficiency by avoiding column protrusion, robust mechanical properties, high load-bearing capacity, ductility, and efficient utilization of internal building space. This article presents the outcomes of an experimental investigation into the seismic behavior of L-shaped CFST columns. The experimental study investigated the seismic performance of nine L-shaped CFST columns while considering different cross-sectional dimensions, their combinations, and varying levels of confinement. The results obtained from this study indicate that L-shaped CFST columns possess favorable seismic performance characteristics. However, there exists the potential for significant improvement by modifying certain parameters. Enhancements in seismic performance were observed when increasing the cross-sectional dimensions of the column and the length of its legs. The use of steel tubes and the provision of adequate confinement also demonstrated notable benefits. Moreover, the better arrangement of steel tubes within the column positively influenced seismic performance. These findings can potentially inform and enhance the design of L-shaped CFST columns, rendering them more resilient to seismic forces.

Due to their excellent thermophysical properties and high stability, inorganic salts and Forsalt mixtures are considered promising thermal energy storage materials for applications operating at high temperatures. A mixture of binary salts, such as CaCl2 (58 wt.%)-LiCl (42 wt.%), was investigated in this work to understand their thermal properties and stability for use in TES systems. Thermophysical properties, such as onset melting and crystallization temperature, enthalpy of fusion, and crystallization enthalpy, were all investigated experimentally via the use of a simultaneous thermal analyzer. The experimental findings demonstrated a suitable onset melting temperature of 488 °C and a solidification temperature of 480 °C. The heat of fusion was observed as 206 J/g, whereas the heat of crystallization was recorded as 180 J/g. Thermal repeatability tests indicated little variations in melting temperature; however, fusion enthalpies changed significantly over the course of 30 heating-cooling cycles. Additionally, the results obtained from the thermogravimetric analysis showed relatively weak thermal stability with considerable mass changes. This might be caused by the salts decomposing at elevated temperatures. In order to validate this, a high-temperature in-situ X-ray diffraction technique was used to verify the thermal instability of the binary salt mixture with and without thermal cycling. The thermal decomposition of parent salts and the subsequent formation of new phases with the formation of voids were shown to be the cause of thermal instability. It is concluded that the binary mixture of chloride salt showed suitable thermal properties but relatively weak thermal stability, which may limit its use in practical applications.

The preparation of fiber-reinforced phosphorus building gypsum composite materials (FRPGCs) is an important approach to enlarge the utilization of phosphogypsum resources. Through reinforcing phosphorus building gypsum (PBG) with basalt fiber (BF), this article probes into the effects of the length and fiber content of BF on the working performance and mechanical properties of basalt-fiber-reinforced phosphorus building gypsum composite materials (BRPGCs) and accesses the toughness of BRPGCs under bending loads using residual strength. The results showed that the addition of BF could significantly promote the mechanical properties of BRPGCs. However, due to the adverse effect of fibers on the working performance of BRPGCs, the fiber content was constrained. After adding 1.2% of 6 mm BF, the bending strength and compressive strength of FRPGCs reached maximum values of 10.98 MPa and 29.83 MPa, respectively. Under a bending load, BRPGCs exhibited an apparent ductile behavior. The P-δ curve presented five stages, with an evident phase of strength stability after cracking. A larger fiber content was conducive to the toughness of BRPGCs. When 1.6% of 6 mm BF was added, the residual strength of FRPGCs could reach 6.77 MPa.

To address the poor characteristics of low strength and poor toughness in phosphogypsum-based construction material, this study investigates the influence of different diameters, lengths, and dosages of polyvinyl alcohol (abbreviated as PVA) fibers on the workability and mechanical properties of phosphogypsum-based construction material. The results show that as the length and dosage of PVA fibers increase, the flowability of the slurry gradually decreases, and the setting time also shortens. With an increase in the diameter of PVA fibers, the rate of decrease in flowability slows down, and the rate of shortening of setting time also gradually slows down. Moreover, the inclusion of PVA fibers significantly improves the mechanical strength of the specimens. When PVA fibers with a diameter of 15 μm, length of 12 mm, and dosage of 1.6% are used, the phosphogypsum-based construction material reinforced with PVA fibers exhibits optimal performance. Under this mixing ratio, the strength values of the specimens for flexural strength, bending strength, compressive strength, and tensile strength are 10.07 MPa, 10.73 MPa, 13.25 MPa, and 2.89 MPa, respectively. Compared to the control group, the strength enhancements are 273.00%, 164.29%, 15.32%, and 99.31%, respectively. SEM scanning of the microstructure provides a preliminary explanation for the mechanism of how PVA fibers affect the workability and mechanical properties of phosphogypsum-based construction material. The findings of this study can provide a reference for the research and application of fiber-reinforced phosphogypsum-based construction material.

Phosphogypsum is an industrial by-product from the wet preparation of phosphoric acid. Phosphorus building gypsum (PBG) can be obtained from phosphogypsum after high-thermal dehydration. Improving the mechanical properties of PBG is of great significance to extending its application range. In this paper, PBG was modified by adding nano-CaCO3. Specifically, this study, conducted on 0.25–2% nano-CaCO3-doped PBG, tested effects on the fluidity, setting time, absolute dry flexural strength, absolute dry compressive strength, water absorption and softening coefficient of PBG, followed by its microscopic analysis with SEM and XRD. The experimental results showed that, with an increase in nano-CaCO3 content, the fluidity and setting time of PBG-based mixes were decreased. When the content was 2%, the fluidity was 120 mm, which was 33% lower than that of the blank group; the initial setting time was 485 s, which was 38% lower than that in the blank group; the final setting time was 1321 s, which was reduced by 29%. Nano-CaCO3 evidently improved the absolute dry flexural strength, absolute dry compressive strength, water absorption and softening coefficient of PBG to a certain extent. When the content was 1%, the strengthening effect reached the optimum, with the absolute dry flexural strength and absolute dry compressive strength being increased to 8.1 MPa and 20.5 MPa, respectively, which were 50% and 24% higher than those of the blank group; when the content was 1.5%, the water absorption was 0.22, which was 33% lower than that of the blank group; when the content approached 0.75%, the softening coefficient reached the peak of 0.63, which was 66% higher than that of the blank group. Doping with nano-CaCO3 could significantly improve the performance of PBG, which provides a new scheme for its modification.

For thermal energy storage, the most promising method that has been considered is latent heat storage associated with molten salt mixtures as phase-change material (PCM). The binary salt mixture lithium chloride—lithium hydroxide (LiCl–LiOH) with a specific composition can store thermal energy. However, to the best of our knowledge, there is no information on their thermal stability in previous literature. The key objectives of this article were to investigate the thermophysical properties, thermal repeatability, and thermal decomposition behavior of the chosen binary salt mixture. FactSage software was used to determine the composition of the binary salt mixture. Thermophysical properties were investigated with a simultaneous thermal analyzer (STA). The thermal results show that the binary salt 32 mol% LiCl-68 mol% LiOH melts within the range of 269 °C to 292 °C and its heat of fusion is 379 J/g. Thermal repeatability was tested with a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) for 30 heating and cooling cycles, which resulted in little change to the melting temperature and heat of fusion. Thermal decomposition analysis indicated negligible weight loss until 500 °C and showed good thermal stability. Chemical and structural instability was verified by X-ray diffraction (XRD) by analysing the binary salt system before and after thermal treatment. A minor peak corresponding to lithium oxide was observed in the sample decomposed at 700 °C which resulted from the decomposition of LiOH at high temperature. The morphology and elemental distribution examinations of the binary salt mixture were carried out via scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was conducted for surface analysis, and their elemental composition verified the chemical stability of the binary salt mixture. Overall, the results confirmed that the binary salt mixture is a potential candidate to be used as thermal energy storage material in energy storage applications of up to 500 °C.

Six groups of austenitic 022Cr19Ni10 stainless steel bending specimens with three types of cross-sectional forms were used to study the impact of V-stiffeners on the failure mode and flexural behavior of stainless steel lipped channel beams. These cross-sectional forms included V-stiffeners in the web compression zone at 1/3 height near the compressed flange and no V-stiffeners on the flange, V-stiffeners in the web compression zone at 1/3 height near the compressed flange and V-stiffeners in the middle of the compressed flange, and V-stiffeners on the web at 1/2 height and V-stiffeners in the middle of the compressed and tensioned flange. The findings show that the specimens without a V-stiffener on the flange and with a V-stiffener in the web compression zone at 1/3 height near the compressed flange have a lower ultimate bearing capacity as a result of local–distortional interaction buckling. The test specimen’s flexural bearing capacity will rise with an increase in web height under the same stiffening form and other fixed cross-sectional parameters. Furthermore, the additional V-stiffeners in the middle of the flange effectively lower the width-to-thickness ratio of the stainless steel specimen with a flange that has been V-stiffened, thus increasing the specimen’s bending bearing capacity by 13% and emphasizing the distortional buckling issue. Buckling first manifests in the compression flange and is caused by the stress evolution on the web of the bending specimen, which is constrained by the V-stiffeners. The specimen’s capacity to withstand bending loads can be improved more successfully through the use of V-stiffeners in the web compression zone at 1/3 height close to the compressed flange and V-stiffeners in the middle of the compressed flange. For the test data, a finite element simulation was established, and the results are generally consistent with the test results.

In this study, novel cross-shaped concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) and steel tube (ST) columns were developed. CFST columns have a high load-carrying capacity and excellent performance under seismic conditions, and the construction process is fast. In order to investigate the axial load bearings and failure mechanisms, six specimens of CFST and ST columns were tested under the axial load. Three different forms of CFST were employed in this study; one was an ordinary cross-shaped CFST (OC-CFST), while the other two were executed with significant inner changes; namely, stiffeners cross-shaped CFST (SC-CFST), and multi-cell cross-shaped CFST (MC-CFST) filled with concrete. The other group has the same OC-ST, SC-ST, and MC-ST, but these test subjects were without filled concrete. Through discussion of the failure mechanism, load displacement and load strain correlations are determined. The effects of parameters on ultimate resistance, failure pattern, and ductility index were studied. The axial load-carrying performance of the cross-shaped CFST columns was 75–80% better than that of ST columns; and each ST column displayed cooperative behavior. The finite element model (FEM) was simulated, and the outcomes of the experiments were used to validate it. The load–displacement relationships were established using parametric analysis. Existing design standards were used to calculate CFST column loading capacity. Finally, mathematical formulas were improvised to determine the ultimate load of the cross-shaped CFST column.

Phosphogypsum is an industrial byproduct from the wet preparation of phosphoric acid. Phosphorus building gypsum can be obtained from phosphogypsum after high-thermal dehydration. This study aimed to analyze the influence of ball milling with different parameters on the strength of phosphorus building gypsum. In this paper, the absolute dry flexural strength and the absolute dry compressive strength of phosphorus building gypsum were compared under different mass ratios of material to ball, ball-milling speed, and ball-milling time, and the NSGM (1,4) model was applied to model and predict the strength of phosphorus building gypsum modified by ball milling. According to the research results, under the same mass ratio of material to ball and ball-milling speed, the absolute dry flexural strength and absolute dry compressive strength of phosphorus building gypsum firstly increased and then decreased with the increase in milling time. The NSGM (1,4) model established in this paper could effectively simulate and predict the absolute dry flexural strength and the absolute dry compressive strength of the ball-milling-modified phosphorus building gypsum; the average relative simulation errors were 12.38% and 13.77%, and the average relative prediction errors were 6.30% and 12.47%.

The ω-hydroxyl-panaxytriol (1) and ω-hydroxyl-dihydropanaxytriol (2)—are rare examples of polyacetylene metabolism by microbial transformation, and these new metabolites (1, 2) from fermented red ginseng (FRG) by solid co-culture induction of two Chaetomium globosum should be the intermediates of biotransformation of panaxylactone (metabolite A). The metabolic pathway of panaxylactone was also exhibited. The ingredients of red ginseng (RG) also induced the production of rare 6/5/5 tricyclic ring spiro-γ-lactone skeleton (3). The ω-hydroxylation of new intermediates (1, 2) decreases cytotoxicity and antifungal activity against C. globosum compared with that of its bioprecursor panaxytriol. Additionally, compounds 1 and 2 indicated obvious inhibition against nitric oxide (NO) production, with ratios of 44.80 ± 1.37 and 23.10 ± 1.00% at 50 μM. 1 has an equivalent inhibition of NO production compared with the positive drug. So, the microbial biotransformation that occurred in FRG fermented by gut C. globosum can change the original bioactivity of polyacetylene, which gave a basis about the metabolic modification of red ginseng by intestinal fungus fermentation.

A series of novel perbutyrylated glycosides of 4β-triazolopodophyllotoxin derivatives were synthesized by utilizing the copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) reaction. Evaluation of cytotoxicity against a panel of five human cancer cell lines (HL-60, SMMC-7721, A-549, MCF-7, SW480) using the MTT assay shows that some of these glycosylated derivatives have good anticancer activity. Among the synthesized compounds, compound 21a shows the highest activity, with IC50 values ranging from 0.49 to 6.70 μM, which is more potent than the control drugs etoposide and cisplatin. Compound 21a is characterized by a perbutyrylated α-D(+)-galactosyl residue, the absence of an additional linking spacer between the sugar residue and the triazole ring, as well as a 4'-OH group on the E ring of the podophyllotoxin scaffold.

Botrytis cinerea is a model species with great importance as a pathogen of plants and has become used for biotechnological production of ABA. The ABA cluster of B. cinerea is composed of an open reading frame without significant similarities (bcaba3), followed by the genes (bcaba1 and bcaba2) encoding P450 monooxygenases and a gene probably coding for a short-chain dehydrogenase/reductase (bcaba4). In B. cinerea ATCC58025, targeted inactivation of the genes in the cluster suggested at least three genes responsible for the hydroxylation at carbon atom C-1' and C-4' or oxidation at C-4' of ABA. Our group has identified an ABA-overproducing strain, B. cinerea TB-3-H8. To differentiate TB-3-H8 from other B. cinerea strains with the functional ABA cluster, the DNA sequence of the 12.11-kb region containing the cluster of B. cinerea TB-3-H8 was determined. Full-length cDNAs were also isolated for bcaba1, bcaba2, bcaba3 and bcaba4 from B. cinerea TB-3-H8. Sequence comparison of the four genes and their flanking regions respectively derived from B. cinerea TB-3-H8, B05.10 and T4 revealed that major variations were located in intergenic sequences. In B. cinerea TB-3-H8, the expression profiles of the four function genes under ABA high-yield conditions were also analyzed by real-time PCR.

A series of 4β-triazole-linked glucose podophyllotoxin conjugates have been designed and synthesized by employing a click chemistry approach. All the compounds were evaluated for their anticancer activity against a panel of five human cancer cell lines (HL-60, SMMC-7721, A-549, MCF-7, SW480) using MTT assays. Most of these triazole derivatives have good anticancer activity. Among them, compound 35 showed the highest potency against all five cancer cell lines tested, with IC50 values ranging from 0.59 to 2.90 μM, which is significantly more active than the drug etoposide currently in clinical use. Structure-activity relationship analysis reveals that the acyl substitution on the glucose residue, the length of oligoethylene glycol linker, and the 4'-demethylation of podophyllotoxin scaffold can significantly affect the potency of the anticancer activity. Most notably, derivatives with a perbutyrylated glucose residue show much higher activity than their counterparts with either a free glucose or a peracetylated glucose residue.

The edible flowers of Caragana sinica are used in China a kind of health-promoting vegetable. In this study, the antioxidant activities of its ethanol extract, as well as its petroleum ether, ethyl acetate, n-butanol and water fractions, were evaluated through in vitro model systems including the DPPH, FRAP and β-carotene bleaching methods. Among the C. sinica flower extracts the ethyl acetate fraction was the most effective. Correlation analysis suggested that flavonoids might be the major contributors to the high antioxidant activity of this flower. Six flavonoids including quercetin (1), isoquercitrin (2), rutin (3), quercetin-3′-O-methyl-3-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl (1→6)-β-D-glucopyranoside (4), typhaneoside (5) and quercetin-3-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl(1→2)[α-L-rhamnopyranosyl (1→6)]-β-D-glucopyranoside (6), were isolated from this flower for the first time. Their contents were determined by a HPLC method. Compounds 3 and 4 were found to be the major flavonoids, with concentrations of 1.20 ± 0.07 and 3.94 ± 0.12 mg/g dry sample, respectively. These results demonstrated that the C. sinica flowers may be valuable natural antioxidant sources and are potentially applicable in the health food industry.

Stachybotrys sp. PH30583 cultured in liquid medium only led to one structure type of novel isochroman dimers. Using the one strain-many compounds strategy, the reinvestigation of the metabolites from Stachybotrys sp. PH30583 cultured in rice solid medium led to the isolation of four triprenyl phenols, including two new bisabosquals and two known phenylspirodrimanes. Nitrobisabosquals A and B (1 and 2) are the first case of pyrrolidone-bisabosquals reported in literature. Totally different compounds were isolated using rice solid medium, compared with those isolated using liquid medium, so that rice solid medium presents a key factor in the production of triprenyl phenols. Compound 1 exhibited cytotoxicity against tumor cells, A-549, HL-60, MCF-7 SMMC-7721, and SW480, as well as weak anticoagulant activity with activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) of 32.1 ± 0.17 s (p < 0.05 vs. Con.) at a concentration of 5 mM. Triprenyl phenol metabolites could be used as chemotaxonomic markers for Stachybotrys.
