Pavement (or road) markings play an important role in road safety, influencing the dynamics of road users through their skid resistance properties. This study provides a comprehensive synthesis and analysis of international perspectives on the skid resistance of pavement markings and their requirements. It examines marking skid test results across various regions, including North America, Europe, and other parts of the world, and emphasizes the impact of different materials and test environments on skid resistance. The study also reviews current skid resistance standards and guidelines, from North American state-level standards to European and global specifications. Furthermore, it discusses the safety implications of these standards for diverse road users, especially motorcyclists, cyclists, and pedestrians. In conclusion, this paper highlights the importance of further innovation and consistency in skid resistance testing and standards to improve road safety.

The design and study of pulsed eddy current sensors for detecting surface defects in small-diameter rods are highly significant. Accurate detection and identification of surface defects in small-diameter rods may be attained by the ongoing optimization of sensor design and enhancement of detection technologies. This article presents the construction of a non-coaxial differential eddy current sensor (Tx-Rx sensor) and examines the detection of surface defects in a small diameter bar. A COMSOL 3D model is developed to examine the variations in eddy current distribution and defect signal characteristics between the plate and rod components. The position of the excitation coil on the bar and the eddy current disruption around the defect are examined. Additionally, a Tx-Rx sensor has been developed and enhanced concerning coil dimensions, coil separation, and elevation height. An experimental system is established to detect bar structures with surface defects of varying depths, and a model correlating differential signal attenuation with defect depth is proposed, achieving a quantitative relative error of less than 5%, thereby offering a reference for the quantitative detection of bar surface defects.

A high degree of hydrolysis can reduce the allergenicity of milk, while lactic acid bacteria (LAB) fermentation can further enhance the antioxidant ability of enzymatic milk. LAB with a strong antioxidant ability was screened, and the effects of LAB on the bitterness, taste and flavor of enzymatic skim milk (ESM) with a high degree of hydrolysis were investigated in this paper, in addition to the response surface methodology optimized the conditions of the LAB fermentation of ESM. The results indicate that the skim milk hydrolyzed by Protamex has a higher degree of hydrolysis and lower bitterness. The scavenging rate of 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical, the inhibition rate of hydroxyl radical (·OH) and the superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum 16 and Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis m16 are significantly higher than those of other strains (p < 0.05), while the improvement effect of L. plantarum 16 on the bitterness and flavor of ESM is better than that of L. lactis subsp. lactis m16. The fermented ESM has a strong antioxidant ability and low bitterness when the inoculum quantity of L. plantarum 16 is 5%, fermentation at 37 °C for 18 h and the pH of the ESM is 6.5, for which the DPPH free radical scavenging rate is 61.32%, the ·OH inhibition rate is 83.35%, the SOD activity rate is 14.58 and the sensory evaluation is 4.25. The contents of amino acids related to bitterness and antioxidants were reduced and increased, respectively. The ESM fermented by L. plantarum 16 has a good flavor, antioxidant ability and low bitterness.

The lap welding process for 304L stainless steel welded using the pulsed gas tungsten arc welding (P-GTAW) procedure was studied, and the effects of the pulse welding parameters (the peak current, background current, duty cycle, pulse frequency, and welding speed) on the macroscopic morphology, microstructure, and mechanical properties of the resultant lap joints were investigated. Tensile tests, hardness measurements, and SEM/EDS/XRD analyses were conducted to reveal the characterization of the joint. The relationships between the welding parameters; certain joint characteristic dimensions (the weld width, D; the weld width on the lower plate, La; the weld depth on the lower plate, P; and the minimum fusion radius, R); and the maximum tensile bearing capacity were studied. The weld zone was primarily composed of vermicular ferrite, skeletal ferrite, and austenite, and no obvious welding defects, precipitation, or phase transformations were evident in the weld. Microhardness tests demonstrated that the weld microhardness was highest in the base metal zone and lowest in the weld zone. As the heat input increased, the average microhardness decreased. The hardness difference reached 17.6 Hv10 due to the uneven grain size and the transformation of the structure to ferrite in the weld. The fracture location in welded joints varied as the heat input changed. In some parameter combinations, the weld tensile strength was significantly higher than that of the base material, with fractures occurring in the weld. Scanning electron microscopy results exhibited an obvious dimple morphology, which is a typical form of ductile fracture. XRD revealed no significant phase changes in the weld zone, with a higher intensity of the austenite diffraction peaks compared to the ferrite diffraction peaks.

Meta-path-based heterogeneous graph neural networks have received widespread attention for better mining the similarities between heterogeneous nodes and for discovering new recommendation rules. Most existing models depend solely on node IDs for learning node embeddings, failing to leverage attribute information fully and to clarify the reasons behind a user’s interest in specific items. A heterogeneous graph neural network for recommendation named MIMA (multi-feature interaction meta-path aggregation) is proposed to address these issues. Firstly, heterogeneous graphs consisting of user nodes, item nodes, and their feature nodes are constructed, and the meta-path containing users, items, and their attribute information is used to capture the correlations among different types of nodes. Secondly, MIMA integrates attention-based feature interaction and meta-path information aggregation to uncover structural and semantic information. Then, the constructed meta-path information is subjected to neighborhood aggregation through graph convolution to acquire the correlations between different types of nodes and to further facilitate high-order feature fusion. Furthermore, user and item embedding vector representations are obtained through multiple iterations. Finally, the effectiveness and interpretability of the proposed approach are validated on three publicly available datasets in terms of NDCG, precision, and recall and are compared to all baselines.

The rocket sled, as a ground dynamic test system, combines the characteristics of the wind tunnel test and the flight test. However, some practical factors, such as shock wave interference, ground effect, and high-intensity aerodynamic noise will cause serious interference and even failure of the uniformly distributed sensors during horizontal sliding in a wide speed range. The AGARD HB-2 standard model is employed as the payload to simulate the aerodynamic and aeroacoustic characteristics during the variable acceleration period, aiming to optimize the test sensors layout. It is observed that in the high Mach number flow fields, strong coupling behaviors among complex waves will occur. The peak of wake vortex strength will appear at 1.5 s and gradually diminish over time. In addition, when the vortex between the load and the booster is monitored, its position shifts forward in the subsonic stage, then gradually moves backward and expands in the supersonic stage. Acoustic directivity is pronounced at subsonic and transonic speeds, pointing towards 75° and 135° relative to the sliding speed, respectively. These results can provide technical support for sensor layout and high-precision testing in rocket sled tests.

Based on the goals of “high reliability, high frequency, rapid launch, and low cost” for space launch sites, an integrated dual-sided deflector system for convective cooling and thermal protection is presented. The interaction process between the gas jet and liquid water jet and its effect on the flow field environment are thoroughly studied using numerical calculation methods. Furthermore, considering the phase-change heat transfer issue in a compressible gas–liquid two-phase flow, and the varying distribution of different bubble shapes and sizes at the gas–liquid interface, a modified Lee model is derived. The research results show that compared to the classical Lee model, the modified Lee model can achieve a higher numerical accuracy in predicting the heat and mass transfer processes in gas–liquid two-phase flows. Through comparative analysis with the traditional dual-sided deflector and the conventional cooling system, the integrated dual-sided deflector system exhibits significant performance advantages in gas flow regulation and flow field environment improvement at the near-ground region of the space launch site. It not only achieves effective flow deflection, but also mitigates the degree of erosion caused by the gas jet on the deflector. This conclusion can provide theoretical references for the thermal protection design of commercial launch vehicle systems at space launch sites.

During the sea launch of a launch vehicle in low sea state, a rolling phenomenon of the launch vehicle has been observed. In rough sea conditions, launch may failure. This study utilizes dimensionality reduction-driven spatial system projection methods and virtual prototype modeling technology to reveal that the launch vehicle’s rolling is caused by differences in the motion paths of the center of mass. Additionally, during the prelaunch stage, the variation in the trajectory of the launch vehicle’s center of mass caused by the rolling and pitching motions of the transportation vessel has a significant impact on the roll motion of the launch vehicle. The motion in other degrees of freedom has minimal influence on the launch vehicle’s rolling. The minimum rocket rolling occurs when the dynamic coefficient of friction of the launchpad–launch vehicle contact is 0.05, and the dynamic coefficient of friction of the adapters and guideways is 0.4. The conclusions provide a theoretical foundation for optimizing the sea launch system and enhancing the reliability of sea launch in rough sea conditions.

There is a wind interference effect between greenhouses in a group arrangement of solar greenhouse groups. To ensure the structural integrity of greenhouse groups situated in valleys, it becomes imperative to analyze both the wind pressure distribution patterns and the wind interference effects. This arises from the recognition that the wind load coefficients applicable to solar greenhouse groups nestled within valleys deviate from those observed in flat plains. The application of the contour modeling method facilitated a realistic reconstruction of the authentic topography within the study area. Subsequently, a wind field simulation was executed specifically for the constructed valley. The resultant wind field data for the studied valley area were then obtained. In the valley, nine solar greenhouses were systematically arranged in a three by three configuration. Special attention was directed towards assessing the surface wind pressures derived meticulously from the simulated wind field and wind direction angle of 0°. The findings elucidate the following: (a) The wind speed ratio exhibits a diminution on the leeward side of the mountain as compared to the windward side, with a notably reduced wind speed ratio observed in proximity to the mountain. (b) An amplification effect is discernible in the peripheral zone adjacent to the leading row of greenhouses, proximate to the incoming airflow. Particular emphasis is warranted regarding the reversal of wind direction observed in the secondary row of greenhouses positioned along the north wall and front roof, specifically at a wind angle of 0°, owing to the pronounced influence of interference effects. Hence, when undertaking the design and construction of a cluster of solar greenhouses within the valley terrain of Tibet, meticulous consideration must be directed towards both the meticulous calculation of wind loads within the periphery of the greenhouses and the judicious selection of the grouping’s location.

In recent years, the efficient removal of organic pollutants from wastewater has emerged as a critical area of global research interest. Against this backdrop, an array of innovative technologies for wastewater treatment has been developed. Among numerous advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), periodate (PI), an emerging oxidizing agent in AOPs, has garnered significant attention from researchers. Particularly, the integration of ultrasound (US)-activated PI systems has been recognized as an exceptionally promising approach for the synergistic degradation of organic pollutants in wastewater. In this paper, we conducted a thorough analysis of the mechanisms underlying the degradation of organic pollutants using the US/PI system. Furthermore, we comprehensively delineated the effects of ultrasonic power, periodate concentration, temperature, pH, coexisting inorganic ions, and dissolved organic matter on the removal efficiency of organic pollutants and summarized application cases of the US/PI system for the degradation of different pollutants. Finally, we also offered prospective discussions on the future trajectories of US/PI technology development.

Background: Ultrasound serves as a valuable tool for the early detection of fetal bowel dilatation, yet the correlation between fetal bowel dilatation and gastrointestinal malformations remains to be further investigated. This study aims to explore the relationship by conducting a follow-up and analysis of fetuses with bowel dilation. Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 113 fetuses with bowel dilatation at our center from July 2014 to December 2019. The location and degree of bowel dilatation were analyzed. ROC curves were constructed based on the diameter of the bowel and its ratio to fetal gestational age. Results: In total, 40 of 41 cases (97.6%) with upper gastrointestinal dilatation (double-bubble sign) and 46 of 72 cases (63.9%) with lower gastrointestinal dilatation were diagnosed with gastrointestinal malformations postnatally. The AUC of the dilatation diameter was 0.854 with a cutoff value of 18.05 mm in patients with lower gastrointestinal dilatation. The ratio of the diameter to gestational age (D/GA) showed a higher AUC of 0.906 with a cutoff value of 0.4931. Conclusions: The presence of the double-bubble sign in fetuses indicates a close association with duodenal obstruction. The risk of gastrointestinal malformations increases when the bowel diameter exceeds 18.05 mm, particularly when the D/GA surpasses 0.4931.

An external cavity wavelength-fiber ring laser (ECWTFL) based on a semiconductor optical amplifier and a combined wavelength scanning filter in the Littrow configuration is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. With the benefit of the combination of an external cavity wavelength filter and a Lyot filter, the laser achieves a single-mode narrow linewidth output with a linewidth of 1.75 kHz. The wavelength tuning range reaches 133 nm, covering the entire S + C band. The proposed ECWTFL is used for demodulation of a fiber EFPI sensor; the result shows that the proposed ECWTFL has the ability to demodulate the small cavity-length FPI sensor.

Background and Objectives: The escalating prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and the limitations associated with utilizing body mass index (BMI) as a predictive measure underscore the imperative need for identifying an optimal early pregnancy predictor. Such a predictor not only mitigates the risk of GDM but also allows for timely implementation of interventions. Materials and Methods: This meta-analysis aimed to explore the association between visceral adipose tissue (VAT) depth and the risk of GDM. A thorough search of PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases was conducted up to 30 September 2023. The analysis employed a random-effects model to assess the relationship between VAT depth and the likelihood of GDM. Results: The inclusion criteria encompassed seven studies involving 1315 women, including 225 diagnosed with GDM. Significantly lower VAT depth was observed in the non-GDM group in comparison to the GDM group (Standardized Mean Difference [SMD]: 0.84; 95% Confidence Interval [CI]: 0.52–1.15; p < 0.001). Substantial statistical heterogeneity was noted among studies (I2 = 72.88%, p = 0.001). Through meticulous sensitivity and subgroup analyses, the source of heterogeneity was identified and thoroughly discussed. Subgroup analyses suggest that different GDM diagnostic criteria and VAT definitions all indicate higher VAT depth in GDM patients during early pregnancy. Conclusions: Our findings propose that, during the first trimester, GDM patients exhibit higher VAT depth compared to non-GDM women, highlighting VAT depth as a potential predictive factor for GDM in early pregnancy. This study contributes valuable evidence to the growing body of knowledge surrounding novel predictors for GDM, emphasizing the importance of early intervention strategies.

Lipid metabolism plays an important role in maintaining lipid homeostasis and regulating immune functions. However, the regulations and mechanisms of lipid metabolism on the regional immune function of avian adipose tissue (AT) have not been reported. In this study, qRT-PCR was used to investigate the changes and relationships of different lipid metabolism pathways in chicken AT during stress-induced immunosuppression (SIIS) inhibiting immune response to Newcastle disease virus vaccine, then the miRNA regulation patterns of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA reductase (HMGCR) gene and its potential applications were further identified. The results showed that AT actively responded to SIIS, and ATGL, CPT1A and HMGCR were all the key genes involved in the processes of SIIS inhibiting the immune responses. SIIS significantly inhibited the natural and specific immune phases of the primary immune response and the initiation phase of the secondary immune response in AT by suppressing T cells by up-regulating steroid anabolism. Moreover, steroid metabolism could play dual roles in regulating the regional immune functions of AT. The miR-29a/c-3p-HMGCR network was a potential regulation mechanism of steroid metabolism in AT, and serum circulating miR-29a/c-3p had the potential as molecular markers. The study can provide valuable references for an in-depth investigation of the regional immune functions regulated by lipid metabolism in AT.

Polyamines and ethylene are key regulators of the growth and development, quality formation, and stress response of cereal crops such as rice. However, it remains unclear whether the application of these regulators could improve the nutritional quality via increasing amino acids in rice grains. This study examined the role of exogenous polyamines and ethylene in regulating amino acid levels in the milled rice of earlier-flowered superior grain (SG) and later-flowered inferior grain (IG). Two rice varieties were field grown, and either 1 mmol L−1 spermidine (Spd) or 50 μmol L−1 amino-ethoxyvinylglycine (AVG) was applied to panicles at the early grain-filling stage. The control check (CK) was applied with deionized water. The results showed that the Spd or AVG applications significantly increased polyamine (spermine (Spm) and Spd) contents and decreased ethylene levels in both SG and IG and significantly increased amino acid levels in the milled rice of SG and IG relative to the CK. Collectively, the application of Spd or AVG can increase amino acid-based nutritional quality and grain yield via increasing polyamine (Spm and Spd) contents and reducing ethylene levels in both SG and IG of rice.

Context: Several recent randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have reported on the survival benefits of poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase inhibitors (PARPi) compared to standard-of-care (SOC) treatment (enzalutamide, abiraterone, or docetaxel) in patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC). However, there is a limited integrated analysis of high-quality evidence comparing the efficacy and safety of PARPi and SOC treatments in this context. Objective: This study aims to comprehensively analyze the survival benefits and adverse events associated with PARPi and SOC treatments through a head-to-head meta-analysis in mCRPC. Evidence acquisition: A systematic review search was conducted in PubMed, Embase, Clinical trials, and the Central Cochrane Registry in July 2023. RCTs were assessed following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. The systematic review was prospectively registered on PROSPERO (CRD42023441034). Evidence synthesis: A total of 8 studies, encompassing 2341 cases in the PARPi treatment arm and 1810 cases in the controlled arm, were included in the qualitative synthesis. The hazard ratio (HR) for radiographic progression-free survival (rPFS) and overall survival (OS) were 0.74 (95% CI, 0.61–0.90) and 0.89 (95% CI, 0.80–0.99), respectively, in the intention-to-treatment patients. For subgroup analysis, HRs for rPFS and OS in the BRCA-mutated subgroup were 0.39 (95% CI, 0.28–0.55) and 0.62 (95% CI, 0.38–0.99), while in the HRR-mutated subgroup, HR for rPFS was 0.57 (95% CI, 0.48–0.69) and for OS was 0.77 (95% CI, 0.64–0.93). The odds ratio (OR) for all grades of adverse events (AEs) and AEs with severity of at least grade 3 were 3.86 (95% CI, 2.53–5.90) and 2.30 (95% CI, 1.63–3.26), respectively. Conclusions: PARP inhibitors demonstrate greater effectiveness than SOC treatments in HRR/BRCA-positive patients with mCRPC. Further research is required to explore ways to reduce adverse event rates and investigate the efficacy of HRR/BRCA-negative patients.

With the rapid development of the intelligent transportation system (ITS), routing in vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) has become a popular research topic. The high mobility of vehicles in urban streets poses serious challenges to routing protocols and has a significant impact on network performance. Existing topology-based routing is not suitable for highly dynamic VANETs, thereby making location-based routing protocols the preferred choice due to their scalability. However, the working environment of VANETs is complex and interference-prone. In wireless-network communication, the channel contention introduced by the high density of vehicles, coupled with urban structures, significantly increases the difficulty of designing high-quality communication protocols. In this context, compared to topology-based routing protocols, location-based geographic routing is widely employed in VANETs due to its avoidance of the route construction and maintenance phases. Considering the characteristics of VANETs, this paper proposes a novel environment-aware adaptive reinforcement routing (EARR) protocol aimed at establishing reliable connections between source and destination nodes. The protocol adopts periodic beacons to perceive and explore the surrounding environment, thereby constructing a local topology. By applying reinforcement learning to the vehicle network’s route selection, it adaptively adjusts the Q table through the perception of multiple metrics from beacons, including vehicle speed, available bandwidth, signal-reception strength, etc., thereby assisting the selection of relay vehicles and alleviating the challenges posed by the high dynamics, shadow fading, and limited bandwidth in VANETs. The combination of reinforcement learning and beacons accelerates the establishment of end-to-end routes, thereby guiding each vehicle to choose the optimal next hop and forming suboptimal routes throughout the entire communication process. The adaptive adjustment feature of the protocol enables it to address sudden link interruptions, thereby enhancing communication reliability. In experiments, the EARR protocol demonstrates significant improvements across various performance metrics compared to existing routing protocols. Throughout the simulation process, the EARR protocol maintains a consistently high packet-delivery rate and throughput compared to other protocols, as well as demonstrates stable performance across various scenarios. Finally, the proposed protocol demonstrates relatively consistent standardized latency and low overhead in all experiments.

Vitamin C, a water-soluble vitamin with strong reducing power, cannot be synthesized by the human body and participates in a variety of important biochemical reactions. Vitamin C is widely used in the pharmaceutical, food, health care, beverage, cosmetics, and feed industries, with a huge market demand. The classical two-step fermentation method is the mainstream technology for vitamin C production. D-sorbitol is transformed into L-sorbose by Gluconobacter oxydans in the first step of fermentation; then, L-sorbose is transformed into 2-keto-L-gulonic acid (2-KGA) by a coculture system composed of Ketogulonicigenium vulgare and associated bacteria; and finally, 2-KGA is transformed into vitamin C through chemical transformation. The conversion of L-sorbose into 2-KGA in the second fermentation step is performed by K. vulgare. However, considering the slow growth and low 2-KGA production of K. vulgare when cultured alone, it is necessary to add an associated bacteria to stimulate K. vulgare growth and 2-KGA production. Although the mechanism by which the associated bacteria promote K. vulgare growth and 2-KGA production has extensively been studied, this remains a hot topic in related fields. Based on the latest achievements and research, this review summarizes the metabolic characteristics of K. vulgare and associated bacteria and elucidates the mechanism by which the associated bacteria promote the growth and 2-KGA production of K. vulgare.

Optical traps formed in hollow-core fibers (HCFs) can overcome several limitations of conventional free-space optical tweezers. One of the key issues is to load particles from free space into the hollow core with high efficiency, in which process the capture dynamics of the particles in front of the HCF endface plays an important role. In this work, a comprehensive model of the trapping and capture process of the dielectric particles in front of HCF is established by taking into account the features of the fiber modes and the motional parameters of the particles. Stable capture positions are predicted based on analytical calculations of optical forces, and the dependencies of the equilibrium axial trapping position on the beam numerical aperture, the fiber core and particle diameters are provided. In addition, the trajectories and the capture dynamics of the particles are studied by solving the equation of motion for the particles under the impact of optical forces, predicting feasible parameter ranges of the initial amplitude and direction of particle launch velocity for achieving successful particle capture in front of HCF. The results can provide guidance for further improving the particle-loading efficiencies of the HCF-based optical traps, which may find applications of flying particle sensors and long-range particle binding in HCFs.

The nonlinear Volterra equalizer has been proved to be able to solve the problem of nonlinear distortion, but it has high computational complexity and is difficult to implement. In this paper, a simplified second-order Volterra nonlinear equalizer designed for intensity modulation/direct detection systems based on direct modulated laser is proposed and demonstrated, taking into account the characteristics of the system. It has been proved that the received signal of direct modulation laser/direct detection system can be expressed in Volterra series form, but its form is too complex, and the device parameters should also be considered. We re-derived it and obtained a more concise form. At the same time, we proposed a method to simplify the second-order Volterra nonlinear equalizer without relying on device parameters. The performance of the proposed Volterra nonlinear equalizer is evaluated experimentally on a 56 Gb/s 4-ary pulse amplitude modulation link implemented by using a 1.55 µm direct modulation laser. The results show that, compared with the traditional Volterra nonlinear equalizer, the receiver sensitivity of the equalizer is only reduced by 0.2 dB at most, but the complexity can be reduced by 50%; compared with diagonally pruned Volterra nonlinear equalizers, the complexity of the equalizer is the same, but the reception sensitivity can be improved by 0.5 dB.

Efforts to enhance quality control (QC) practices in chip seal construction have predominantly relied on single surface friction metrics such as mean profile depth (MPD) or friction number. These metrics assess chip seal quality by targeting issues such as aggregate loss or excessive bleeding, which may yield low friction numbers or texture depths. However, aggregate loss, particularly due to snowplow operations, does not always result in slippery conditions and may lead to uneven surfaces. The correlation between higher MPD or friction number and superior chip seal quality is not straightforward. This research introduces an innovative machine learning-based approach to enhance chip seal QC. Using a hybrid DBSCAN-Isolation Forest model, anomaly detection was conducted on a dataset comprising 183,794 20 m MPD measurements from actual chip seal projects across six districts in Indiana. This resulted in typical 20 m segment MPD ranges of [0.9 mm, 1.9 mm], [0.6 mm, 2.1 mm], [0.3 mm, 1.3 mm], [1.0 mm, 1.7 mm], [0.6 mm, 1.9 mm], and [1.0 mm, 2.3 mm] for the respective six districts in Indiana. A two-step QC procedure tailored for chip seal evaluation was proposed. The first step calculated outlier percentages across 1-mile segments, with an established limit of 25% outlier segments per wheel track. The second step assessed unqualified rates across projects, setting a threshold of 50% for unqualified 1-mile wheel track segments. Through validation analysis of four chip seal projects, both field inspection and friction measurements closely aligned with the proposed methodology’s results. The methodology presented establishes a foundational QC standard for chip seal projects, enhancing both acceptance efficiency and safety by using a quantitative method and minimizing the extended presence of practitioners on roadways.

Preventing stunting is particularly important for healthy development across the life course. In Papua New Guinea (PNG), the prevalence of stunting in children under five years old has consistently not improved. Therefore, the primary objective of this study was to employ multiple machine learning algorithms to identify the most effective model and key predictors for stunting prediction in children in PNG. The study used data from the 2016–2018 Papua New Guinea Demographic Health Survey, including from 3380 children with complete height-for-age data. The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) and random-forest-recursive feature elimination were used for feature selection. Logistic regression, a conditional decision tree, a support vector machine with a radial basis function kernel, and an extreme gradient boosting machine (XGBoost) were employed to construct the prediction model. The performance of the final model was evaluated using accuracy, precision, recall, F1 score, and area under the curve (AUC). The results of the study showed that LASSO-XGBoost has the best performance for predicting stunting in PNG (AUC: 0.765; 95% CI: 0.714–0.819) with accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 scores of 0.728, 0.715, 0.628, and 0.669, respectively. Combined with the SHAP value method, the optimal prediction model identified living in the Highlands Region, the age of the child, being in the richest family, and having a larger or smaller birth size as the top five important characteristics for predicting stunting. Based on the model, the findings support the necessity of preventing stunting early in life. Emphasizing the nutritional status of vulnerable maternal and child populations in PNG is recommended to promote maternal and child health and overall well-being.

Cytochrome P450 monooxygenase (CYP) is one of the three detoxification metabolic enzymes in insects, and is involved in the metabolism and transformation of endogenous substances as well as the activation and degradation of exogenous compounds. This study aims to reveal the molecular mechanism of CYP9E2 in Tribolium castaneum in adapting to high-CO2 stress. By predicting the sequence function of CYP9E2, analyzing the temporal and spatial expression profile of TcCYP9E2, and using RNAi to silence TcCYP9E2 combined with a high-CO2 stress treatment, we measured the carbohydrate content, trehalase activity, and gene expression levels in trehalose metabolism of T. castaneum. A bioinformatics analysis showed that the predicted molecular weight of the protein encoded by TcCYP9E2 is 60.15, the theoretical isoelectric point is 8.63, there is no signal peptide, and the protein is hydrophilic. An evolutionary tree analysis showed that TcCYP9E2 belongs to the CYP6 family and belongs to the CYP3 group; and the spatiotemporal expression profile results showed that TcCYP9E2 was highly expressed in the larvae midgut 48 h after injection of dsCYP9E2, with survival rates decreasing with the increase in CO2 concentration. Under the condition of 75% CO2, the contents of glycogen, glucose, ATP, and membrane-bound trehalase decreased significantly after the injection of dsCYP9E2. The expression of TRE-1, TRE-2, and GP in trehalose metabolism and energy pathways was significantly downregulated.

Transition-metal-doped clusters have long been attracting great attention due to their unique geometries and interesting physical and/or chemical properties. In this paper, the geometries of the lowest- and lower-energy CoKn (n = 2–12) clusters have been screened out using particle swarm optimization and first principles relaxation. The results show that except for CoK2 the other CoKn (n = 3–12) clusters are all three-dimensional structures, and CoK7 is the transition structure from which the lowest energy structures are cobalt atom-centered cage-like structures. The stability, the electronic structures, and the magnetic properties of CoKn clusters (n = 2–12) clusters are further investigated using the first principles method. The results show that the medium-sized clusters whose geometries are cage-like structures are more stable than smaller-sized clusters. The electronic configuration of CoKn clusters could be described as 1S1P1D according to the spherical jellium model. The main components of petal-shaped D molecular orbitals are Co-d and K-s states or Co-d and Co-s states, and the main components of sphere-like S molecular orbitals or spindle-like P molecular orbitals are K-s states or Co-s states. Co atoms give the main contribution to the total magnetic moments, and K atoms can either enhance or attenuate the total magnetic moments. CoKn (n = 5–8) clusters have relatively large magnetic moments, which has a relation to the strong Co-K bond and the large amount of charge transfer. CoK4 could be a magnetic superatom with a large magnetic moment of 5 μB.

The Ad Hoc On-demand Distance Vector (AODV) is a routing protocol for mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) and other wireless ad hoc networks. The vanilla AODV protocol is simple and easy to implement because it only uses the hop count as a routing metric. Single-metric route determination also causes problems, such as network congestion and energy exhaustion, which limit the usage of AODV in resource-limited applications. To solve these problems, the authors propose a new routing protocol that combines the analytic hierarchy process (AHP), the entropy weight method (EWM), and AODV. The proposed protocol uses energy, congestion, and the hop count as metrics and weights these three metrics using AHP and EWM. To address the importance of energy in applications, such as drones, the proposed protocol chooses different comparison matrices for AHP at different node residual energy levels. Finally, the node chooses the best route link according to the score (sum of weighted metrics). It is also suitable for wireless sensor networks because the proposed protocol considers the residual energy of the node. The simulation results show that the improved routing protocol can effectively reduce the average end-to-end delay and energy consumption and prolong the lifetime of the whole network.

Rapid erection is a key technology for modern warfare in vehicle weapon launch systems. It is challenging to attain rapidity with the hydraulic erecting system because of the intensified cavitation in the piston chamber at high speeds, which reduces volumetric efficiency and increases flow pulsation in the typical high-pressure axial piston pump. In this paper, an improved scheme for the cylinder window area overflow surface was proposed to solve this problem. Based on the full cavitation model and the compressible model, a numerical model of the internal flow in the piston pump was developed, and the effect of rotational speeds on the flow and cavitation characteristics of the pump was analysed. The results show that after the improvement, the maximum flow of the pump is increased from 1.765 kg/s to 2.295 kg/s, an increase of 30.028%, and the maximum speed corresponding to the volumetric efficiency of more than 90% is increased from 1500 rpm to 2100 rpm. At high speeds, the improved block can effectively suppress the cavitation and backflow in the piston chamber, improve the volumetric efficiency of the piston pump and reduce the flow pulsation, which is conducive to reducing the vibration and noise of the pump body.

Based on self-determination theory and adopting a person-oriented approach, we aimed to investigate the latent profiles of adolescent students’ basic psychological needs and their associations with personal characteristics (gender, socioeconomic status) as well as school functioning (school affect, burnout, academic achievement). Latent profile analyses based on a group of 1521 Chinese high school students identified four need profiles: low satisfaction/moderate frustration, high satisfaction/low frustration, average all, and moderate satisfaction/high frustration. Furthermore, there were significant differences in students’ school functioning among the four latent profiles. Specifically, students with moderate to high levels of need frustration were most likely to experience maladaptive school functioning, regardless of their need satisfaction level. Additionally, gender and socioeconomic status were significant predictors of profile membership. The findings of this study can assist educators in gaining a better understanding of the diverse patterns of psychological needs among students and help them to implement targeted interventions.

Noroviruses (NoVs) are the main cause of acute gastroenteritis in all ages worldwide. The aim of this study was to produce the recombinant P protein of norovirus and to demonstrate its blocking effect. In this study, the engineered strains were induced to express the P protein of NoVs GII.4, which was identified using SDS-PAGE and ELISA as having the capacity to bind to histo-blood group antigens (HBGAs). Rabbits were immunized to obtain neutralizing antibodies. ELISA and ISC-RT-qPCR were used to determine the blocking efficacy of the neutralizing antibody to human norovirus (HuNoV) and murine norovirus (MNV). The recombinant P protein (35 KD) was obtained, and the neutralizing antibody was successfully prepared. The neutralizing antibody could block the binding of the P protein and HuNoV to HBGAs. Neutralizing antibodies can also block MNV invasion into host cells RAW264.7. The recombinant P protein expressed in E. coli can induce antibodies to block HuNoV and MNV. The recombinant P protein of NoVs GII.4 has the value of vaccine development.

The effective control over the vesicle formation pathways is vital for tuning its function. Recently, a liquid–liquid phase-separated intermediate (LLPS) is observed before a vesicular structure during the solvent exchange self-assembly of block copolymers. Though the understanding of polymer structures and chemical compositions on the competition between LLPS and micellization has made some progress, little is known about the role of cosolvent on it. In this study, the influence of cosolvent on the vesicle formation pathways is investigated by using dissipative particle dynamics. The results show that the range of water fraction within which the LLPS is favored will be highly dependent on the affinity difference of cosolvent to water and to polymer repeat units. The change of the cosolvent–water interaction and the water fraction impact the distribution of cosolvent in the polymer domain, the miscibility between the components in the system as well as the chain conformations, which finally induce different self-assembly behaviors. Our findings would be helpful for understanding the LLPS and controlling the morphologies of diblock polymers in solutions for further applications.

Pavement friction plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety of road networks. Accurately assessing friction levels is vital for effective pavement maintenance and for the development of management strategies employed by state highway agencies. Traditionally, friction evaluations have been conducted on a case-by-case basis, focusing on specific road sections. However, this approach fails to provide a comprehensive assessment of friction conditions across the entire road network. This paper introduces a hybrid clustering algorithm, namely the combination of density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise (DBSCAN) and Gaussian mixture model (GMM), to perform pavement-friction performance ratings across a statewide road network. A large, safety-oriented dataset is first generated based on the attributes possibly contributing to friction-related crashes. One-, two-, and multi-dimensional clustering analyses are performed to rate pavement friction. After using the Chi-square test, six ratings were identified and validated. These ratings are categorized as (0, 20], (20, 25], (25, 35], (35, 50], (50, 70], and (70, ∞). By effectively capturing the hidden, intricate patterns within the integrated, complex dataset and prioritizing friction-related safety attributes, the hybrid clustering algorithm can produce pavement-friction ratings that align effectively with the current practices of the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) in friction management.

The COVID-19 pandemic has placed an unprecedented burden on public health and strained the worldwide economy. The rapid spread of COVID-19 has been predominantly driven by aerosol transmission, and scientific research supports the use of face masks to reduce transmission. However, a systematic and quantitative understanding of how face masks reduce disease transmission is still lacking. We used epidemic data from the Diamond Princess cruise ship to calibrate a transmission model in a high-risk setting and derive the reproductive number for the model. We explain how the terms in the reproductive number reflect the contributions of the different infectious states to the spread of the infection. We used that model to compare the infection spread within a homogeneously mixed population for different types of masks, the timing of mask policy, and compliance of wearing masks. Our results suggest substantial reductions in epidemic size and mortality rate provided by at least 75% of people wearing masks (robust for different mask types). We also evaluated the timing of the mask implementation. We illustrate how ample compliance with moderate-quality masks at the start of an epidemic attained similar mortality reductions to less compliance and the use of high-quality masks after the epidemic took off. We observed that a critical mass of 84% of the population wearing masks can completely stop the spread of the disease. These results highlight the significance of a large fraction of the population needing to wear face masks to effectively reduce the spread of the epidemic. The simulations show that early implementation of mask policy using moderate-quality masks is more effective than a later implementation with high-quality masks. These findings may inform public health mask-use policies for an infectious respiratory disease outbreak (such as one of COVID-19) in high-risk settings.

Rinodina is a lichenized fungal genus belonging to the Physciaceae, with c. 300 species worldwide. Nearly a century ago, Zahlbruckner described five species of the genus Rinodina from Southwest China. The type collections were the only records for these species. In the present study, new records for four of these species: Rinodina cornutula, R. globulans, R. handelii, and R. setschwana, and a recently described species, R. pluriloculata, are documented based on specimens collected from the holotype localities. Furthermore, one new species was discovered: Rinodina hengduanensis, characterized by areolate to subsquamulose thallus, jigsaw-like areoles, lecanorine apothecium, and Dirinaria-type ascospores. Rinodina setschwana is transferred to the genus Buellia based on its morphology, chemistry, and phylogeny and proposed as Buellia setschwana. We provide detailed morphological descriptions, pictures, and molecular phylogenetic analyses.

In this article, by combining a recent critical point theorem and several theories of the ψ-Caputo fractional operator, the multiplicity results of at least three distinct weak solutions are obtained for a new ψ-Caputo-type fractional differential system including the generalized p-Laplacian operator. It is noted that the nonlinear functions do not need to adapt certain asymptotic conditions in the paper, but, instead, are replaced by some simple algebraic conditions. Moreover, an evaluation criterion of the equation without solutions is also provided. Finally, two examples are given to demonstrate that the ψ-Caputo fractional operator is more accurate and can adapt to deal with complex system modeling problems by changing different weight functions.

During the iron ore sintering process, its SiO2 content considerably affects the sinter quality. In this study, the effect of SiO2 content on iron ore sintering indexes was studied, with mineral composition and microstructure analyses. It was shown that the strength and reducibility of sintering products improved when SiO2 content increased. The sinter yield and tumbler index increased from 69.57% and 58.67% to 74.02% and 62.32%, respectively, with SiO2 content increasing from 3.92% to 5.12%. Moreover, the reduction disintegration index (RDI+3.15) increased from 66.50% to 68.28%. There was a quadratic function relationship between SiO2 content (x) and RDI+3.15 (y): y = −0.4841x2 + 5.8932x + 50.8189. Maintaining the SiO2 content in the range of 4.52% to 5.12% would promote the formation of compound calcium ferrite (SFCA) and silicate as the main binding phase which determined the quality of sintering products.

Mindfulness refers to paying attention to the present sensation, attention, and thoughts without judgment and is proven to enhance sensations. Although researchers began to investigate the role of mindfulness in consumer decision-making, few studies pay attention to the impact of mindfulness on the effect of sensory marketing. In the current study, we investigated whether and how mindfulness enhances the purchase intentions of sensory marketing products. We conducted three studies (n = 593) to test our hypotheses. The first study tested the correlation between trait mindfulness and the purchase intentions of sensory ads. The results showed that the level of trait mindfulness and purchase intentions were positively correlated. The second study primed the state mindfulness of participants and demonstrated that high-level state mindfulness enhanced purchase intentions, which was moderated by the number of sensory types. The third study further tested the mental imagery vividness and proved the mediating role of vividness between state mindfulness and purchase intentions. The current study shows the enhancing effect of mindfulness on purchase intentions. This effect is moderated by the number of sensory types and mediated by the vividness of mental images. Our study illustrates the critical contribution of mindfulness to promoting sensory marketing.

Mobile robots, including ground robots, underwater robots, and unmanned aerial vehicles, play an increasingly important role in people’s work and lives. Path planning and obstacle avoidance are the core technologies for achieving autonomy in mobile robots, and they will determine the application prospects of mobile robots. This paper introduces path planning and obstacle avoidance methods for mobile robots to provide a reference for researchers in this field. In addition, it comprehensively summarizes the recent progress and breakthroughs of mobile robots in the field of path planning and discusses future directions worthy of research in this field. We focus on the path planning algorithm of a mobile robot. We divide the path planning methods of mobile robots into the following categories: graph-based search, heuristic intelligence, local obstacle avoidance, artificial intelligence, sampling-based, planner-based, constraint problem satisfaction-based, and other algorithms. In addition, we review a path planning algorithm for multi-robot systems and different robots. We describe the basic principles of each method and highlight the most relevant studies. We also provide an in-depth discussion and comparison of path planning algorithms. Finally, we propose potential research directions in this field that are worth studying in the future.

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a serious global health problem. Despite the widespread use of the Mycobacterium bovis bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccine, the primary factor for the TB pandemic and deaths is adult TB, which mainly result from endogenous reactivation of latent Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) infection. Improved new TB vaccines with eligible safety and long-lasting protective efficacy remains a crucial step toward the prevention and control of TB. In this study, five immunodominant antigens, including three early secreted antigens and two latency associated antigens, were used to construct a single recombinant fusion protein (Epera013f) and a protein mixture (Epera013m). When formulated with aluminum adjuvant, the two subunit vaccines Epera013m and Epera013f were administered to BALB/c mice. The humoral immune responses, cellular responses and MTB growth inhibiting capacity elicited after Epera013m and Epera013f immunization were analyzed. In the present study, we demonstrated that both the Epera013f and Epera013m were capable of inducing a considerable immune response and protective efficacy against H37Rv infection compared with BCG groups. In addition, Epera013f generated a more comprehensive and balanced immune status, including Th1, Th2 and innate immune response, over Epera013f and BCG. The multistage antigen complex Epera013f possesses considerable immunogenicity and protective efficacy against MTB infection ex vivo indicating its potential and promising applications in further TB vaccine development.

Early recognition of abnormal gait enables physicians to determine a prompt rehabilitation plan for patients for the most effective treatment and care. The Kinect depth sensor can easily collect skeleton data describing the position of joints in the human body. However, the default human skeleton model of Kinect includes an excessive number of many joints, which limits the accuracy of the gait recognition methods and increases the computational resources required. In this study, we propose an optimized human skeleton model for the Kinect system and streamline the joints using a center-of-mass calculation. We integrate several techniques to propose an end-to-end, spatial–temporal, joint attention graph convolutional network (STJA-GCN) architecture. We conducted experiments with a fivefold cross-validation on two common datasets of information on abnormal gaits to evaluate the performance of the proposed method. The results show that the STJA-GCN achieved 93.17 and 92.08% accuracy on the two datasets, and compared to the original spatial–temporal graph convolutional network (ST-GCN), the recognition accuracy increases by 9.22 and 20.65%, respectively. Overall, the results demonstrate that the STJA-GCN can accurately recognize abnormal gaits and, thus, can support low-cost rehabilitation assessments at community hospitals or in patients’ homes.

Household food waste has become a global concern for all countries in the world. This study focuses on the household level to clarify the impact of household food waste, and we use an online questionnaire survey across China to estimate the proportion of household food waste from five categories, including whole food; fruits and vegetables; poultry, eggs, meat, and dairy products; staple food; and snacks and candy. Then, we use the logit and Tobit models to estimate the relationship between the five food categories and consumer characteristics. First, the statistical analysis shows that in China, the incidence rate and proportion of household food waste are 90.7% and 9.9%, respectively. Among them, the incidence rate and proportion of fruit and vegetable waste are the highest. The results of heterogeneity also show regional differences in the incidence rate and proportion of food waste. Second, the empirical results show that label cognition, garbage disposal cognition, vegetarianism, population, children or elders in the household, the experience of starvation, and age are important explanatory factors for the incidence and proportion of food waste in the household.

The molecular dynamics method was used to analyze the influence of simulated temperature on the damage expansion process of the 3C-SiC sample under nano-indentation loading in order to study the influence of temperature on the internal damage and expansion mechanism of the 3C-SiC single crystal sample further during the nano-indentation loading process. A simulation test platform for diamond indenter indentation was established. The process of stress and strain distribution, dislocation evolution, dislocation expansion and potential energy change were analyzed, combined with the radial distribution function and load displacement curve. The influence of temperature on the 3C-SiC material was discussed. The variation trend of the potential energy-step curve is basically the same at the temperatures of 0 K, 300 K, 600 K and 900 K. The difference in strain distribution was characterized by the influence of temperature on stress intensity, expansion direction and type. The microcosmic manifestation is the significant difference in the dislocation slip at low temperature. In the process of dislocation evolution and expansion, dislocation climbs at room temperature and increases at high temperature, which is closely related to energy release. This study has certain guiding significance for investigating the internal damage difference and temperature effect of the 3C-SiC sample.

Upper gastrointestinal (GI) malignancy is a leading cause of cancer-related morbidity and mortality. Upper endoscopy has an established role in diagnosing and staging upper GI cancers, screening for pre-malignant lesions, and providing palliation in cases of advanced malignancy. New advances in endoscopic techniques and technology have improved diagnostic accuracy and increased the therapeutic potential of upper endoscopy. We aim to describe the different types of endoscopic technology used in cancer diagnosis, summarize the current guidelines for endoscopic diagnosis and treatment of malignant and pre-malignant lesions, and explore new potential roles for endoscopy in cancer therapy.

This paper proposes a GPS receiver vector frequency-locked loop-assisted phase-locked loop (VFAPLL) structure based on the maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) method for highly dynamic weak-signal scenarios. In this structure, the loop structure does not include a frequency discriminator, and the signal is directly input to the navigation filter after down-conversion, coherent integration, and other processing to avoid nonlinear noise error. Due to the high dimension and nonlinearity of the cost function of the MLE algorithm, the Levenberg Marquardt (LM) algorithm is used to optimize it. The proposed VFAPLL is compared with the VFAPLL implemented based on the extended Kalman filter (EKF) algorithm and the frequency locked loop assisted phase locked loop (FAPLL) implemented based on MLE. Through simulation verification, it was shown that the VFAPLL (MLE) has higher tracking accuracy, lower loss-of-lock threshold, and better robustness to the input signal than the other two loops.

A crucial and fundamental type of precipitation monitoring is the automatic observation of precipitation by ground stations. However, the typical quality control methods that are applied to rainfall present restrictions because of their discontinuities in time and space. The multi-component comprehensive consistency approach is a subjective quality control method that uses changes in other weather components associated with the precipitation process. The present study determined the reference weather components for precipitation by calculating the correlation coefficients between weather components and precipitation, and the proportions that passed the significance tests. These components included air pressure, visibility, relative humidity, wind speed, temperature difference, and the sum of cloud covers of 125–875 hPa. This study introduced various gridded fusion products to fill in the empty spaces of weather components, and put forward a scoring method to convert a subjective method into an objective method. The outcomes of the scoring method are assessed using the artificial quality control results. The evaluation’s findings demonstrate that the scoring method’s accuracy in every period of precipitation is greater than 0.75, meeting the need for objective quality control of real-time surface precipitation.

A method based on the high-frequency ultrasonic guided waves (UGWs) of a piezoelectric sensor array is proposed to monitor the depth of transverse cracks in rail bottoms. Selecting high-frequency UGWs with a center frequency of 350 kHz can enable the monitoring of cracks with a depth of 3.3 mm. The method of arranging piezoelectric sensor arrays on the upper surface and side of the rail bottom is simulated and analyzed, which allows the comprehensive monitoring of transverse cracks at different depths in the rail bottom. The multi-value domain features of the UGW signals are further extracted, and a back propagation neural network (BPNN) is used to establish the evaluation model of the transverse crack depth for the rail bottom. The optimal evaluation model of multi-path combination is reconstructed with the minimum value of the root mean square error (RMSE) as the evaluation standard. After testing and comparison, it was found that each metric of the reconstructed model is significantly better than each individual path; the RMSE is reduced to 0.3762; the coefficient of determination R2 reached 0.9932; the number of individual evaluation values with a relative error of less than 10% and 5% accounted for 100% and 87.50% of the total number of evaluations, respectively.

Maintaining the homeostasis balance of trace elements is crucial for the health of organisms. Human health is threatened by diseases caused by a lack of trace elements. Saccharomyces cerevisiae has a wide and close relationship with human daily life and industrial applications. It can not only be used as fermentation products and single-cell proteins, but also as a trace elements supplement that is widely used in food, feed, and medicine. Trace-element-enriched yeast, viz., chromium-, iron-, zinc-, and selenium-enriched yeast, as an impactful microelements supplement, is more efficient, more environmentally friendly, and safer than its inorganic and organic counterparts. Over the last few decades, genetic engineering has been developing large-scaled genetic re-design and reconstruction in yeast. It is hoped that engineered yeast will include a higher concentration of trace elements. In this review, we compare the common supplement forms of several key trace elements. The mechanisms of detoxification and transport of trace elements in yeast are also reviewed thoroughly. Moreover, genes involved in the transport and detoxification of trace elements are summarized. A feasible way of metabolic engineering transformation of S. cerevisiae to produce trace-element-enriched yeast is examined. In addition, the economy, safety, and environmental protection of the engineered yeast are explored, and the future research direction of yeast enriched in trace elements is discussed.

In recent years, cell membrane drug delivery systems have received increasing attention. However, drug-loaded membrane delivery systems targeting therapy in myocardial ischemia–reperfusion injury (MIRI) have been relatively rarely studied. The purpose of this study was to explore the protective effect of platelet-membrane-encapsulated Carvedilol on MIRI. We extracted platelets from the blood of adult SD rats and prepared platelet membrane vesicles (PMVs). Carvedilol, a nonselective β-blocker, was encapsulated into the PMVs. In order to determine the best encapsulation rate and drug-loading rate, three different concentrations of Carvedilol in low, medium, and high amounts were fused to the PMVs in different volume ratios (drugs/PMVs at 2:1, 1:1, 1:2, and 4:1) for determining the optimum concentration and volume ratio. By comparing other delivery methods, including abdominal injection and intravenous administration, the efficacy of PMVs-encapsulated drug-targeted delivery treatment was observed. The PMVs have the ability to target ischemic-damaged myocardial tissue, and the concentration and volume ratio at the optimum encapsulation rate and the drug-loading rate are 0.5 mg and 1:1. We verified that PMVs@Carvedilol had better therapeutic effects compared to other treatment groups, and immunofluorescence observation showed a significant improvement in the apoptosis indicators and infarction area of myocardial cells. Targeted administration of PMVs@Carvedilol may be a promising treatment for myocardial reperfusion injury, as it significantly improves postinjury cardiac function and increases drug utilization compared to other delivery methods.

Rice is one of the most important food crops in the world, and amino acids in rice grains are major nutrition sources for the people in countries where rice is the staple food. Phytohormones and plant growth regulators play vital roles in regulating the biosynthesis of amino acids in plants. This paper reviewed the content and compositions of amino acids and their distribution in different parts of ripe rice grains, and the biosynthesis and metabolism of amino acids and their regulation by polyamines (PAs) and phytohormones in filling grains, with a focus on the roles of higher PAs (spermidine and spermine), ethylene, and brassinosteroids (BRs) in this regulation. Recent studies have shown that higher PAs and BRs (24-epibrassinolide and 28-homobrassinolide) play positive roles in mediating the biosynthesis of amino acids in rice grains, mainly by enhancing the activities of the enzymes involved in amino acid biosynthesis and sucrose-to-starch conversion and maintaining redox homeostasis. In contrast, ethylene may impede amino acid biosynthesis by inhibiting the activities of the enzymes involved in amino acid biosynthesis and elevating reactive oxygen species. Further research is needed to unravel the temporal and spatial distribution characteristics of the content and compositions of amino acids in the filling grain and their relationship with the content and compositions of amino acids in different parts of a ripe grain, to elucidate the cross-talk between or among phytohormones in mediating the anabolism of amino acids, and to establish the regulation techniques for promoting the biosynthesis of amino acids in rice grains.

Aortic dissection (AD) is a life-threatening cardiovascular disease with a dismal prognosis. Inflammation plays an important role in AD. Oxylipins are bioactive lipids involved in the modulation of inflammation and may be involved in the pathogenesis and progression of AD. This study aims to identify possible metabolites related to AD. A total of 10 type A Aortic dissection (TAAD) patients, 10 type B Aortic dissection (TBAD) patients and 10 healthy controls were included in this study. Over 100 oxylipin species were identified and quantified by liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) analysis. Our investigation demonstrated substantial alterations in 91 oxylipins between AD and healthy individuals. Patients with TAAD had 89 entries accessible compared to healthy controls. According to orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA), fitness (R2X = 0.362 and R2Y = 0.807, p = 0.03) and predictability (Q2 = 0.517, p = 0.005) are the validation parameters between the two groups. Using multivariate logistic regression, 13-HOTrE and 16(17)-EpDPE were the risk factors in the aortic patients group compared to healthy people (OR = 2.467, 95%CI:1.256–7.245, p = 0.035; OR = 0.015, 95%CI:0.0002–0.3240, p = 0.016, respectively). In KEGG enrichment of differential metabolites, the arachidonic acid metabolism pathway has the most metabolites involved. We established a diagnostic model in distinguishing between AD and healthy people. The AUC was 0.905. Oxylipins were significantly altered in AD patients, suggesting oxylipin profile is expected to exploit a novel, non-invasive, objective diagnosis for AD.

Meropenem (MER) is widely used to treat complicated and serious infections. Therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) provides a valid clinical tool to avoid suboptimal concentrations and dose–related adverse reactions. However, TDM seems to face challenges since the limited stability of MER in plasma makes transport difficult between clinics and laboratories. Dried plasma spot (DPS) sampling is an attractive but underutilized method for TDM that has the desired features of easy collection, storage, and transport, and overcomes known hematocrit (HCT) issues in dried blood spot (DBS) analysis. This study was designed to investigate a DPS–based liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS) method for quantification of MER. The method was developed and validated for DPS and wet plasma samples. Calibration curves were linear (R2 > 0.995) over the concentration range of 0.5–50 µg/mL. Overall accuracy and precision did not exceed 15% and no significant matrix effect was observed. MER has been more stable in DPS than in wet plasma samples. A comparison of DPS and wet plasma concentrations was assessed in 32 patients treated with MER. The results showed that there was no significant difference between the two methods. So the DPS method developed in this study is appropriate and practical for the monitor of MER in the daily clinical laboratory practice.
