Slope stability analysis plays a crucial role in geotechnical engineering, particularly in regions susceptible to seismic activity. The inherent non-homogeneity and uncertainty of soil properties pose significant challenges in assessing slope stability under seismic conditions. To address these complexities, a novel and efficient methodology named DUBLA-PDM-PCK is proposed. In this methodology, the effects of soil non-homogeneity and uncertainty, along with the time and spatial variations of seismic loading, are systematically considered. The deterministic framework integrates discretized upper bound limit analysis (DUBLA) to accommodate soil non-homogeneous characteristics, and the pseudo-dynamic method (PDM) to model seismic loading variability. Then, a robust and efficient probabilistic analysis method, PCK-MA, is implemented utilizing adaptive Polynomial Chaos Kriging metamodeling, Monte Carlo Simulation, and Analysis of Covariance to investigate the uncertainty of the parameters. This approach treats nine key parameters, including soil cohesion, friction angle, non-homogeneous coefficients, horizontal and vertical seismic coefficients, period, and amplification factor, as random variables to assess their uncertainty effects on failure probability (stability level) and sensitivity indices. The DUBLA-PDM-PCK methodology offers a streamlined and reliable tool tailored for assessing slope stability in seismic environments, demonstrating notable efficiency in addressing soil variability and seismic loading uncertainties. Its application holds promise for guiding engineering practices and enhancing understanding of slope behavior in regions prone to seismic hazards.

A mathematical model is established to investigate the economic effects of infectious diseases. The distribution of wealth among two types of agents in the context of the epidemic is discussed. Using the method of statistical mechanics, the evolution of the entropy weak solutions for the model of the susceptible and the infectious involving wealth density functions is analyzed. We assume that as time tends to infinity, the wealth density function of the infectious is linearly related to the wealth density function of the susceptible individuals. Our results indicate that the spreading of disease significantly affects the wealth distribution. When time tends to infinity, the total wealth density function behaves as an inverse gamma distribution. Utilizing numerical experiments, the distribution of wealth under the epidemic phenomenon and the situation of wealth inequality among agents are discussed.

This paper aims to establish a more standardized and regulated carbon emission accounting model for sponge cities by unifying the accounting content for carbon emissions and clarifying the relationships between carbon reduction benefits, carbon reduction effects, and carbon sequestration, in order to evaluate the carbon reduction outcomes and mechanisms of sponge city construction. Based on a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) carbon emission accounting model using the carbon emission factor method, a newly constructed residential area in Tianshui City, Gansu Province, was selected as a case study, and the carbon emission reduction effect of sponge city construction was then investigated. Results indicated that the 30-year full life cycle carbon emissions for sponge city construction in the newly constructed residential area amounted to 828.98 tons, compared to 744.28 tons of CO2 reduction in traditional construction, representing a 47.31% reduction in carbon emissions. Over a 30-year life cycle, this equated to a total carbon emission reduction effect of 1460.31 tons. Additionally, under various rainfall scenarios in a typical year, the carbon emission reduction effect of sponge city construction exceeded the carbon emissions, achieving carbon neutrality within 22 to 30 years of operation. This demonstrates that the carbon emission reduction effect of sponge city communities is significant. The findings of this study provide data and a theoretical basis for the low-carbon construction of sponge cities in China.

Seven fatty acids were detected by GC-MS in Xanthoceras sorbifolium Bunge seed oil extracted at different temperatures, including Palmitic acid C16:0, Stearic acid C18:0, Oleic acid C18:1, Eicosenoic acid C20:1, Docosenoic acid C22:1, Tetracosenoic acid C24:1, and Linoleic acid C18:2. The highest content of nervonic acid (NA) was found in Xanthoceras sorbifolium Bunge seed oil extracted at 70 °C. Three methods were selected to analyze the extraction rate of nervonic acid in Xanthoceras sorbifolium Bunge seed oil, including urea complexation, low-temperature solvent crystallization, and a combined treatment using these two methods. The final content of nervonic acid obtained was 14.07%, 19.66%, and 40.17%, respectively. The combined treatment method increased the purity of nervonic acid in Xanthoceras sorbifolium Bunge seed oil by 12.62 times. Meanwhile, thermogravimetric behavior analysis of samples extracted using different methods was conducted by thermogravimetric analyzer, which suggested that the thermal stability of the samples extracted by the combined treatment was enhanced. These results can provide a new process parameter and scientific basis for the extraction of NA. At the same time, FTIR and NMR were also used to characterize the combined extraction sample, and the structure of the samples was proved.

Metasurfaces can flexibly manipulate electromagnetic waves by engineering subwavelength structures, which have attracted enormous attention in holography, cloaking, and functional multiplexing. For structures with n-fold (n > 2) rotational symmetry, they have been utilized to realize broadband and high-efficiency wavefront manipulation with generalized Pancharatnam–Berry phase, whereas spin-selective wavefront manipulation is still a challenge limited by their symmetrical spin–orbit interactions. Here, we demonstrate the spin-selective wavefront manipulations with generalized Pancharatnam–Berry phase in the range of 560–660 nm with a metal–insulator–metal metasurface consisting of the chiral C3 logarithmic spiral nanostructures. As a proof of concept, two deflectors and a bifocal metalens are designed. This configuration may provide a platform for various applications in polarimetry, polarization-selective images, and nonlinear optical responses.

Existing studies have examined unhealthy food packaging information, mainly focusing on aspects such as the content, color, and text, whilst paying less attention to the boundaries of information. This paper investigates unhealthy foods through three experiments, revealing that the presence (vs. absence) of packaging information boundaries on unhealthy foods has a negative impact on consumers’ purchasing intentions (p = 0.040) (Experiment 1). The feeling of constraint mediates this effect (β = −0.078, CI: [−0.1911, −0.0111]) (Experiment 2). Additionally, consumers with an independent self-construal exhibit reduced purchasing intentions when unhealthy food packaging information boundaries are present (vs. absent) (p < 0.001), whereas those with an interdependent self-construal show increased purchasing intentions under the same conditions (p = 0.024) (Experiment 3). This paper reveals the psychological mechanism and boundary conditions of unhealthy food packaging information boundaries affecting consumers’ purchasing intention and provides practical inspiration for government policy-making related to unhealthy food packaging.

Breast cancer is one of the most common causes of death in women. Early signs of breast cancer can be an abnormality depicted on breast images like breast ultrasonography. Unfortunately, ultrasound images contain a lot of noise, which greatly increases the difficulty for doctors to interpret them. In recent years, computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) has been widely used in medical images, reducing the workload of doctors and the probability of misdiagnosis. However, it still faces the following challenges in clinical practice: one is the lack of interpretability, and another is that the accuracy is not high enough. In this paper, we propose a classification model of breast ultrasound images that leverages tumor boundaries as prior knowledge and strengthens the model to guide classification. Furthermore, we employ the advantages of convolutional neural network (CNN) to extract local features and Transformer to extract global features to achieve information balance and complementarity between the two neural network models which increase the recognition performance of the model. Additionally, an explanation method is used to generate visual results, thereby improving the poor interpretability of deep learning models. Finally, we evaluate the model on the BUSI dataset and compare it with other CNN and Transformer models. Experimental results show that the proposed model obtains an accuracy of 0.9870 and an F1 score of 0.9872, achieving state-of-the-art performance.

To explore the effect of the photoperiod on the accumulation and distribution of dry matter in potato, a pot experiment was carried out in 2021 and 2022 with two varieties (Atlantic and Hezuo 88). The varieties were used as the main plot, and light treatments (short-day and long-day) were used as the subplot. The results showed that extended hours of light delayed tuber formation in Hezuo 88, however, the effect was not obvious for the Atlantic. Comprehensive analyses were carried out using the potato developmental process, dynamic equation fitting of the tuber and whole-plant dry matter accumulation, and the dry matter accumulation and distribution rate of each organ of the two varieties under two photoperiods. The two photoperiods had different effects on the parameters of rapid tuber and whole-plant dry matter accumulation: the starting point of the period of the rapid dry matter accumulation (t1), the duration period of the rapid dry matter accumulation (Δt), and the average growth rate of the period of the rapid dry matter accumulation (Vmean). According to comprehensive analysis, tuber dry matter accumulation in Atlantic was the highest under the short-day condition, while Hezuo 88 showed the lowest tuber dry matter accumulation under the long-day condition and was the latest to enter the rapid tuber dry matter accumulation period. The whole-plant dry matter accumulation in Atlantic was the highest under the long-day condition and lowest in Hezuo 88; meanwhile, Hezuo 88 was the latest to enter the rapid whole-plant dry matter accumulation period. In terms of the dry matter accumulation and dry matter partitioning ratio of various organs, Hezuo 88 had the lowest mean tuber dry matter accumulation and partitioning ratio under the long-day condition but the highest mean stem, leaf, root, underground stem, and stolon dry matter partitioning ratio. On the contrary, Atlantic had the highest mean tuber dry matter accumulation and portioning ratio under the short-day condition but the lowest mean stem, leaf, root, underground stem, and stolon dry matter partitioning ratio. It was concluded that different varieties of potato respond differently to the photoperiod. In the case of Hezuo 88, prolonging the photoperiod affected the dynamics and distribution of dry matter accumulation; increased the stem, leaf, root, and underground stem dry matter partitioning ratio; and decreased the tuber dry matter partitioning ratio, which resulted in a decrease in tuber dry matter accumulation and consequently delayed the emergence of the equilibrium period between the aboveground and underground dry matter.

The characteristics and responses of soil bacterial communities and potato productivity to different fertilization treatments in farmlands in the agropastoral zone of Inner Mongolia were investigated. Moreover, the diversity and structure of soil bacterial communities and potato productivity under different fertilization treatments (no fertilization, CK; phosphorus-deficient treatment, NK; conventional fertilization, NPK; and organic–inorganic combination, NPKM) were assessed using Illumina high-throughput sequencing. The results revealed that soil pH, organic matter (SOM), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP) content, and potato productivity were significantly increased under fertilizer treatments (NK, NPK, and NPKM) compared with those under CK, with NPKM treatment having the best enhancement effect. The application of organic fertilizers significantly increased the Shannon, evenness, Chao1, and Ace indices of soil bacterial communities and reshaped the bacterial community structure. Random forest model analysis revealed that soil pH and TP significantly affected soil bacterial diversity, whereas soil pH, SOM, TP, and TN significantly affected soil bacterial community structure. Correlation and structural equation modeling analyses revealed that soil TP and SOM indirectly affected potato productivity by changing soil bacterial diversity and community composition. The results of this study provide a scientific basis for improving the quality and productivity of farmland soil to guide the rational fertilization of farmlands in the agropastoral zone of northern China.

The low-temperature oxidation of methane gas in coal mine exhaust gas is important for reducing the greenhouse effect and protecting the environment. Unfortunately, the carbon–hydrogen bonds in methane molecules are highly stable, requiring higher reaction temperatures to achieve effective catalytic oxidation. However, metal oxide-based catalysts face the problem of easy sintering and the deactivation of active components at high temperatures, which is an important challenge that catalysts need to overcome in practical applications. In this work, a series of Mn-Co3O4 active components were grown in situ on ZSM-5 zeolite with mesoporous pore structures treated with an alkaline solution via a hydrothermal synthesis method. Due to the presence of polyethylene glycol as a structure-directing agent, manganese can be uniformly doped into the Co3O4 lattice. The large specific surface area of ZSM-5 zeolite allows the active component Mn-Co3O4 to be uniformly dispersed, effectively preventing the sintering and growth of active component particles during the catalytic reaction process. It is worth mentioning that the Mn-Co3O4/meso-ZSM-5-6.67 catalyst has a methane conversion rate of up to 90% at a space velocity of 36,000 mL·g−1·h−1 and a reaction temperature of 363 °C. This is mainly due to the mesoporous ZSM-5 carrier with a high specific surface area, which is conducive to the adsorption and mass transfer of reaction molecules. The active component has an abundance of oxygen vacancies, which is conducive to the activation of reaction molecules and enhances its catalytic activity, which is even higher than that of noble metal-based catalysts. The new ideas for the preparation of metal oxide-based low-temperature methane oxidation catalysts proposed in this work are expected to provide new solutions for low-temperature methane oxidation reactions and promote technological progress in related fields.

Unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) often operate in real-world environments with long voyage distances and complex routes. The use of a single-grid map model presents challenges, such as the high computational costs for high-resolution maps and loss of environmental information for low-resolution maps. This article proposes an environmental modeling method using a hybrid map that combines topology units and grids. The approach involves calibrating key nodes based on the watershed skeleton line, constructing a topology map using these nodes, decomposing the original map into unit maps, converting each unit map into a grid map, and creating a hybrid map environment model that comprises topology maps, unit map sets, and grid map sets. Then, the article introduces an improved genetic algorithm, called Genetic Algorithm with Feedback (FGA), to address path planning in hybrid maps. Experimental results demonstrate that FGA has better computational efficiency than other algorithms in similar experimental environments. In hybrid maps, path planning with FGA reduces the path lengths and time consumption, and the paths are more logical, smooth, and continuous. These findings contribute to enhancing the quality of path planning and the practical value of USVs.

In the early stages, uncontrolled groundwater extraction led to the Hangjiahu (HJH) Plain becoming one of the areas with the most severe land subsidence in China. Since the beginning of this century, comprehensive measures have been taken to control the continuous aggravation of large land subsidence patterns in some areas; however, urban land subsidence issues, influenced by various factors, still persist and exhibit complex geographical distribution characteristics. In this study, we utilized Sentinel-1A images and the SBAS-InSAR technique to capture surface deformation over the HJH Plain in Zhejiang from 16 March 2017 to 20 January 2023. Through a comparative analysis with geological conditions, changes in surface mass loading, rainfall and groundwater, and land use types, we discussed the contributions of natural and anthropogenic factors to land subsidence. Augmented with optical remote sensing images and field investigations, we conducted a correlation analysis of the land subsidence status. The preliminary findings suggest that changes in surface mass loading and short-term heavy rainfall under extreme weather conditions can lead to periodic land subsidence changes in the region. Additionally, extensive infrastructure construction triggered by urbanization has resulted in significant and sustained land subsidence deformation. The research findings play an important guiding role in formulating scientifically effective strategies for land subsidence prevention and control, as well as urban planning and construction.

Predicting the post-blast re-entry time precisely can improve productivity and reduce accidents significantly. The empirical formulas for the time prediction are practical to implement, but lack accuracy. In this study, a novel method based on the back-propagation neural network (BPNN) was proposed to tackle the drawbacks. A numerical model was constructed and 300 points of sample data were recorded, with consideration to fresh air volume, occupational exposure limit, toxic gas volume per kg of explosives and roadway length. The BPNN model with six neurons in a hidden layer was then developed and prediction performance was discussed in terms of four indicators, namely, the root mean square error (RMSE), the coefficient of determination (R2), the mean absolute error (MAE) and the sum of squares error (SSE). Furthermore, one representative empirical formula was introduced and calibrated for the comparison. The obtained results showed that the BPNN model had a more remarkable performance, with RMSE of 21.45 (R2: 0.99, MAE: 10.78 and SSE: 40934), compared to the empirical formula, with RMSE of 76.89 (R2: 0.90, MAE: 42.06 and SSE: 526147). Hence, the BPNN model is a superior method for predicting the post-blast re-entry time. For better practical application, it was then embedded into the software.

This study aims to examine the effects of various maternity leave support on the quiet quitting behaviors and mental health conditions of working mothers across industries during the post-pandemic period. Through an empirical survey method of 310 valid responses from a panel data, the study results indicated that working mothers who took maternity leave were less likely to adopt quiet quitting behaviors when they returned to work after childbirth and showed better mental health at work compared to their peers who did not take maternity leave because of childbirth and/or childcare. Additionally, paid maternity leave was not found to have a significant effect on quiet quitting behaviors and mental health of working mothers across industries, but the duration of maternity leave was found as a significant factor in impacting working mothers’ quiet quitting behaviors and their mental health conditions. Moreover, peer workers’ quiet quitting behaviors and supervisors’ support for childcare (e.g., flexible work schedule) were found significantly to improve working mothers’ quiet quitting tendencies at work. Lastly, there exist significant differences in age and race in the working mothers’ quiet quitting behaviors at work.

Upward comparisons are prevalent in life and have a significant influence on consumer psychology and subsequent behavior. Previous research examined the effects of upward comparisons on consumption behavior, mainly focusing on behavior that evokes positive emotions (e.g., donation behavior, sustainable consumption) or behavior that evokes negative emotions (e.g., impulsive consumption, compulsive consumption) and less on behavior that evokes both negative emotions and positive emotions (i.e., counterhedonic consumption). This research examined the effect of upward comparisons on counterhedonic consumption. Five studies (N = 1111) demonstrated that upward comparison (vs. non-upward comparison) leads to counterhedonic consumption, and this effect is mediated by relative deprivation (Studies 2 and 3). In addition, this research showed that the comparison targets moderate the effects of upward comparisons on counterhedonic consumption. Specifically, when the comparison target is a friend, an upward comparison (vs. non-upward comparison) leads to counterhedonic consumption. When the comparison target is a stranger, an upward comparison (vs. non-upward comparison) has no significant influence on counterhedonic consumption (Study 5). Our findings extend the research on upward comparisons, relative deprivation, and counterhedonic consumption.

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is one of the common complications during pregnancy. Numerous studies have shown that GDM is associated with a series of adverse effects on both mothers and offspring. Due to the particularity of pregnancy, medical nutrition treatment is considered to be the first choice for the treatment of GDM. This contribution reviews the research progress of medical nutrition treatment in GDM, summarizes the international recommendations on the intake of various nutrients and the influence of nutrients on the prevalence of GDM, and the improvement effect of nutritional intervention on it, in order to provide references for research in related fields of GDM and the targeted development of enteral nutrition.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a common chronic metabolic disease worldwide. The disturbance of the gut microbiota has a complex influence on the development of DM. Polysaccharides are one type of the most important natural components with anti-diabetic effects. Gut microbiota can participate in the fermentation of polysaccharides, and through this, polysaccharides regulate the gut microbiota and improve DM. This review begins by a summary of the sources, anti-diabetic effects and the gut microbiota regulation functions of natural polysaccharides. Then, the mechanisms of polysaccharides in regulating the gut microbiota to exert anti-diabetic effects and the structure–activity relationship are summarized. It is found that polysaccharides from plants, fungi, and marine organisms show great hypoglycemic activities and the gut microbiota regulation functions. The mechanisms mainly include repairing the gut burrier, reshaping gut microbiota composition, changing the metabolites, regulating anti-inflammatory activity and immune function, and regulating the signal pathways. Structural characteristics of polysaccharides, such as monosaccharide composition, molecular weight, and type of glycosidic linkage, show great influence on the anti-diabetic activity of polysaccharides. This review provides a reference for the exploration and development of the anti-diabetic effects of polysaccharides.

The nutrient availability of carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) has been decreasing due to a decline in the biological function of yellow soil, limiting potato yield (PY). Increasing biochar or organic fertilizer input is an effective way to improve soil microbiological fertility. However, indexes to regulate soil microbiological fertility using biochar and organic fertilizer individually or in combination and these indexes’ associations with PY remain unclear. In this study, four fertilization strategies were developed using the nutrient balance method: CK (recommended NPK fertilization), BC (NPK + biochar), OF (NPK + organic fertilizer), and BF (NPK + 1/2 biochar + 1/2 organic fertilizer). Using different fertilization strategies, the eco-stoichiometry characteristics of the soil microbial biomass and enzyme activity; the bioavailability of C, N, and P; and the differences in PY were investigated, and the direct and indirect effects of these factors on PY were determined over a two-year period. The results showed that exogenous organic matter input could considerably affect the stoichiometric ratios of soil microbial biomass; C; N; P; the stoichiometric ratios of C-converting, N-converting, and P-converting enzyme activities (expressed as BG+CBH, NAG+LAP, and AP, respectively); and the integrated enzyme index (IEI). The IEI was the highest in BF, followed by OF, BC, and CK. A significant positive correlation was found between the microbial biomass C, N, and P and their corresponding converting enzyme activities (p < 0.05). The ln(BG+CBH):ln(NAG+LAP), ln(BG+CBH):lnAP, and ln(NAG+LAP):lnAP ratios were all higher than 1:1, but they approached 1:1 in the order of CK-BC-OF-BF. Compared to soil C and N, P-converting enzyme activity was the primary limiting factor for soil nutrient conversion in the study area. BF was less restricted by P and more balanced in its nutrient ratio. The microbial biomass C:N:P could affect PY in eight ways. (1) Microbial biomass C:N directly decreased PY, and microbial biomass C:P indirectly increased PY. (2) It could decrease C-converting enzyme activity, (3) decrease N availability to increase C-converting enzyme activity, (4) decrease P availability, or (5) decrease P availability to decrease the soil C:P-converting enzyme activity ratio. Microbial biomass N:P indirectly increased PY (6) by increasing the soil C:P-converting enzyme activity ratio, (7) by increasing C-converting enzyme activity, or (8) by increasing N availability to increase C-converting enzyme activity. Thus, BF is an effective strategy for regulating the soil microbiological fertility index; enhancing C, N, and P nutrient conversion; and increasing PY. The input of exogenous organic matter can alter the stoichiometric ratios of soil microbial biomass C, N, and P; the stoichiometric ratios of C-converting, N-converting, and P-converting enzyme activities; and nutrient availability, thus regulating PY. Microbial biomass N:P and soil C:P-converting enzyme activity ratios influence PY the most.

Wireless localization and target sensing both rely on precise extraction of parameters such as signal amplitude, propagation delay, and Doppler shift from the received signals. Due to the high multi-path resolution and strong penetration, both localization and sensing can be achieved through identical UWB waveforms. In this paper, we try to properly allocate resources for localization and sensing to fully exploit the potential of UWB systems. Considering the complexity of the multi-slot networks, we derive the Fisher Information Matrix (FIM) expressions for single-slot and dual-slot integrated sensing and localization (ISAL) networks, respectively, and propose two resource optimization schemes, namely the step-by-stepscheme and the integrated scheme, respectively. The numerical results show that: (i) for the sensing-resource-limited networks with relatively uniform node distribution, the energy allocated to each step in the step-by-step scheme satisfies the relationship energy for clock offset < energy for radar localization < energy for target sensing; (ii) in the multi-slot ISAL networks, more energy will be allocated to the time slots where the networks are relatively sensing-resource-limited; (iii) the step-by-step scheme is more suitable for the sensing-resource-abundant networks, while the integrated scheme is more suitable for the sensing-resource-limited networks.

Tofacitinib citrate (RR-isomer) is a janus kinase (JAK) inhibitor approved for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in adults who have had an inadequate response or intolerance to methotrexate. The presence of the enantiomer of tofacitinib citrate (SS-isomer) is monitored for quality control as a possible impurity in the final product. In this study, a reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) method based on a chiral recognition mechanism for the separation of tofacitinib citrate and its enantiomer was established based on the principles of green analytical chemistry. A CHIRALPAK IH column was used with a mobile phase of ammonium acetate buffer (pH 8.0) and acetonitrile in a gradient elution at a detection wavelength of 285 nm. The calibration curve exhibited excellent linearity over the range of 0.1002–20.04 μg/mL (r = 0.9999). The average recovery of the enantiomer was 98.6% with a relative standard deviation (RSD) of 0.7%. The limit of detection (LOD) and the limit of quantitation (LOQ) were 0.04 and 0.1 μg/mL, respectively. This RP-HPLC method was suitable for detecting the enantiomers of tofacitinib citrate in tablets. Furthermore, the method proved to be environmentally friendly based on the evaluation by Analytical Eco-Scale, Analytical GREEnness (AGREE) and Green Analytical Procedure Index (GAPI).

We investigated the effects of variety, planting density, and irrigation amount on grain yield, water-use efficiency (WUE), and evapotranspiration (ETc). The trial was conducted in Tong Liao, Inner Mongolia, from 2021 to 2022, with compact variety Dika159 (DK159) and conventional variety Zhengdan958 (ZD958) as the test materials. The planting density was set to 6.0 × 104 plants/ha (D1, local farmer planting density) and 9.0 × 104 plants/ha (D2), with five irrigation levels: 450 mm (W450, irrigation amount used by local farmers, CK); 360 mm (W360); 270 mm (W270); 180 mm (W180); and 90 mm (W90). The results indicate that the yield and WUE of variety DK159 increased by 7.48% and 5.00%, compared to ZD958, respectively. Increasing planting density enhanced yield by 13.32–15.57% in maize yield and 9.55–11.47% in WUE. Maize yield exhibited a trend of increasing linearly with the irrigation amount before reaching a plateau, reaching a maximum (16.62–17.39 t/ha) and high WUE (2.45–2.49 kg/m3) with DK159-D2-W270. The highest water consumption intensity occurred during the silking stage to the milk stage for different densities and varieties. The results indicate that selecting compact varieties, increasing planting density, and optimizing irrigation amount through integrated drip irrigation and water fertilizer can effectively improve maize yield and WUE.

Apocynum venetum L. is an economically valuable plant with tolerance to drought and salinity. Its leaves are utilized in tea production and pharmaceuticals, while the stem bark serves as a high-quality fiber material. To gain insights into the gene expression patterns of A. venetum using quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR), it is crucial to identify appropriate reference genes. This study selected nine candidate genes, including α-tubulin (TUA), β-tubulin (TUB), actin (ACT), cyclophilin (CYP), elongation factor-1α (EF-1α), the B family of regulatory subunits of protein phosphatase (PPP2R2, PPP2R3, and PPP2R5), and phosphoglycerate kinase (PGK), to determine the most appropriate reference genes in the leaf, stem, and root tissues of A. venetum. A comprehensive ranking by geNorm, NormFinder, BestKeeper, and RefFinder software and Venn diagrams was used to screen more stable reference genes in different tissues. The two most stable reference genes were CYP and TUA in leaves, PGK and PPP2R3 in stems, and TUA and EF-1α in roots, respectively. The relative expression values of the four genes involved in proline metabolism under polyethylene glycol treatment were used to validate the screened reference genes, and they exhibited highly stable expression levels. These findings represent the first set of stable reference genes for future gene expression studies in A. venetum. They significantly contribute to enhancing the accuracy and reliability of gene expression analyses in this economically important plant species.

To investigate the quantitative relationship between the volume capture of rainfall and carbon emissions from bioretention facilities, this study introduces the concept of the carbon intensity of volume capture of rainfall. The influence of four key factors—climatic conditions, aquifer height, permeability coefficient, and facility area—was investigated using a residential neighborhood in Tianshui, China, as an example. The results reveal that the carbon intensity value is influenced not only by external environmental changes but also by the inherent attributes of bioretention facilities, such as aquifer height, permeability coefficient, and facility area. The maximum carbon intensity value for the volume capture of rainfall was −0.0005 kg CO2/m3, while the minimum was −0.0852 kg CO2/m3, representing a substantial difference of approximately 169 times. Orthogonal experiments identified the facility area as the most significant influencing factor on carbon intensity, with a correlation coefficient of 0.0520. The area of bioretention facilities can be prioritized to meet deployment requirements, taking into account volume capture reduction effects and carbon emissions. For facilities with a high carbon intensity, an emphasis should be placed on enhancing carbon reduction benefits, and various initiatives can be implemented to achieve this goal.

Intercultural communication (IC) textbooks are important means to transfer and construct knowledge about different cultural groups, yet it is still not clear how specific cultures are represented in these educational materials. This study addresses the question by analyzing the content of Chinese culture represented in a sample of intercultural communication textbooks. The findings show that (1) a variety of Chinese cultural contents are covered in IC textbooks, among which cultural products and persons are the most frequent references followed by cultural practices and perspectives; (2) representations of Chinese culture reflect diverse conceptualizations of culture ranging from essential to non-essential orientations; (3) Chinese cultures are presented often with theoretical concepts of the IC field and in comparative contexts together with other cultures. Differences in cultural representation between IC and language textbooks and their educational implications are discussed at the end.

To comprehend the intricate interaction between water resources and food security, it is critical to examine the hidden water footprint (WF) of food consumption and its underlying causes within specific nations or areas. This study investigates the changes in the quality and structure of food consumption in China’s urban and rural areas from 2000 to 2020. Following the calculation of the WF associated with food consumption for both urban and rural populations, this study uses ArcGIS 10.6 software to map the spatial configuration of the provincial per capita WF. Moreover, the random forest model is utilized to uncover the salient determinants influencing the WF of food consumption in urban and rural contexts. Quantitatively, rural populations have witnessed a more pronounced acceleration in their per capita food WF compared with urban entities, with a notable upswing in the proportion of meat and poultry consumption. Spatially, regions exhibiting elevated WF for urban populations have transitioned from the western zones toward the southeast and northeast, whereas a marked east–west dichotomy is evident in rural areas. In terms of drivers, for urban demographics, economic variables emerge as paramount determinants for food WF, while rural areas underscore the prominence of natural and technological parameters. The insights garnered from this investigation bear profound implications for facilitating balanced nutritional intake among China’s urban and rural populations, alleviating food-related water resource pressures, and optimizing water resource utilization.

Dry matter (DM) and nitrogen (N) transport from nutritive organs to the grain is critical for cereal crop yield and protein content. There is limited research on the effects of slow-release or controlled-release fertilizers on dry matter and nitrogen partitioning in the nutrient organs of spring corn. A field trial was conducted in the National Corn Industry Technology System Xinzhou Comprehensive Experiment Station, China. The effects of different fertilizer management on yield, photosynthetic capacity, and nutrient partitioning of spring maize were studied. We modeled local farmers’ planting and management practices (T3). Based on T3, we added a slow-release compound fertilizer (T2), which does not require a follow-up fertilizer, and a controlled-release formulated fertilizer (T1), which is highly efficient and has low carbon emissions. The net photosynthetic rate (Pn), transpiration rate (E), stomatal conductance (Gs), and intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci) were 23%, 18.5%, 18%, 10.5% and 19%, 10.9%, 7%, and 5.5% higher in T1 compared to those of T3 and T2, respectively, at the ripening stage. The contribution of post-flowering DM transport to the kernel of T1 was 46% and 41.4% higher than that of T3 and T2, respectively. The nitrogen content of the kernel of T1 was 35.2% and 18.5% higher than that of T3 and T2, respectively. After a comprehensive analysis, T1 prolonged the photosynthetic effect through adequate nitrogen supply, provided nutrients to the kernel, promoted maize nitrogen uptake and utilization, and ultimately improved yield.

Dendrobium Sw. (family Orchidaceae) is a renowned edible and medicinal plant in China. Although widely cultivated and used, less research has been conducted on differential Dendrobium species. In this study, stems from seven distinct Dendrobium species were subjected to UPLC-QTOF-MS/MS analysis. A total of 242 metabolites were annotated, and multivariate statistical analysis was employed to explore the variance in the extracted metabolites across the various groups. The analysis demonstrated that D. nobile displays conspicuous differences from other species of Dendrobium. Specifically, D. nobile stands out from the remaining six taxa of Dendrobium based on 170 distinct metabolites, mainly terpene and flavonoid components, associated with cysteine and methionine metabolism, flavonoid biosynthesis, and galactose metabolism. It is believed that the variations between D. nobile and other Dendrobium species are mainly attributed to three metabolite synthesis pathways. By comparing the chemical composition of seven species of Dendrobium, this study identified the qualitative components of each species. D. nobile was found to differ significantly from other species, with higher levels of terpenoids, flavonoids, and other compounds that are for the cardiovascular field. By comparing the chemical composition of seven species of Dendrobium, these qualitative components have relevance for establishing quality standards for Dendrobium.

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been extensively studied, and their crucial roles in adipogenesis, lipid metabolism, and gene expression have been revealed. However, the exact regulatory or other mechanisms by which lncRNAs influence the functioning of mesenteric adipose tissue (MAT) remain largely unknown. In this paper, we report the identification of a new lncRNA, named G8110, from the MAT of Bama pigs. The coordinated expression levels of lncRNA G8110 and NFE2L1 were significantly decreased in the MAT of obese Bama pigs compared with those in the MAT of lean pigs. Using a bone mesenchymal stem cell adipogenic differentiation model, we found that lncRNA G8110 played a role in adipocyte differentiation by positively regulating NFE2L1. We also found that lncRNA G8110 inhibited the formation of intracellular lipid synthesis, promoted lipid metabolism, and inhibited the expression of inflammatory cytokines. Our findings regarding lipid synthesis may further promote the role of lncRNAs in driving adipose tissue remodeling and maintaining metabolic health.

High-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) is widely used to treat hypoxemic respiratory failure. The effectiveness of HFNC treatment and the methods for monitoring its efficacy in the general ward remain unclear. This prospective observational study enrolled 42 patients who had acute hypoxemic respiratory failure requiring HFNC oxygen therapy in the general adult respiratory ward. The primary outcome was the all-cause in-hospital mortality. Secondary outcomes included the association between initial blood test results and HFNC outcomes. Regional ventilation distributions were monitored in 24 patients using electrical impedance tomography (EIT) after HFNC initiation. Patients with successful HFNC treatment had better in-hospital survival (94%) compared to those with failed HFNC treatment (0%, p < 0.001). Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratios of ≥9 were more common in patients with failed HFNC (70%) compared to those with successful HFNC (52%, p = 0.070), and these patients had shorter hospital survival rates after HFNC treatment (p = 0.046, Tarone-Ware test). Patients with successful HFNC treatment had a more central ventilation distribution compared to those with failed HFNC treatment (p < 0.05). Similarly, patients who survived HFNC treatment had a more central distribution compared to those who did not survive (p < 0.001). We concluded that HFNC in the general respiratory ward may be a potential rescue therapy for patients with respiratory failure. EIT can potentially monitor patients receiving HFNC therapy.

A dominant mutation in hnRNPA1 causes amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), but it is not known whether this mutation leads to motor neuron death through increased or decreased function. To elucidate the relationship between pathogenic hnRNPA1 mutation and its native function, we created novel transgenic rats that overexpressed wildtype rat hnRNPA1 exclusively in motor neurons. This targeted expression of wildtype hnRNPA1 caused severe motor neuron loss and subsequent denervation muscle atrophy in transgenic rats that recapitulated the characteristics of ALS. These findings demonstrate that the augmentation of hnRNPA1 expression suffices to trigger motor neuron degeneration and the manifestation of ALS-like phenotypes. It is reasonable to infer that an amplification of an as-yet undetermined hnRNPA1 function plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of familial ALS caused by pathogenic hnRNPA1 mutation.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is a cutting-edge technique for highly sensitive analysis of chemicals and molecules. Traditional SERS-active nanostructures are constructed on rigid substrates where the nanogaps providing hot-spots of Raman signals are fixed, and sample loading is unsatisfactory due to the unconformable attachment of substrates on irregular sample surfaces. A flexible SERS substrate enables conformable sample loading and, thus, highly sensitive Raman detection but still with limited detection capabilities. Stretchable SERS substrates with flexible sample loading structures and controllable hot-spot size provide a new strategy for improving the sample loading efficiency and SERS detection sensitivity. This review summarizes and discusses recent development and applications of the newly conceptual stretchable SERS substrates. A roadmap of the development of SERS substrates is reviewed, and fabrication techniques of stretchable SERS substrates are summarized, followed by an exhibition of the applications of these stretchable SERS substrates. Finally, challenges and perspectives of the stretchable SERS substrates are presented. This review provides an overview of the development of SERS substrates and sheds light on the design, fabrication, and application of stretchable SERS systems.

Measuring the mechanical properties of weld Heat Affected Zone (HAZ) remains one of the main challenges in the failure analysis of spot-welded components. Due to the small size of the HAZ and variation in the temperature history, different peak temperatures and cooling rates impose a range of phase transformations across the resistance spot weld. Among the HAZ sub-regions, the sub-critical HAZ (SCHAZ), which experiences temperatures below AC1 (350–650 °C), usually shows a reduction in the hardness in most of the modern AHSS grades due to the martensite tempering phenomenon. SCHAZ softening may lead to strain localization during loading. Therefore, it is important to characterize the local properties of the SCHAZ region to accurately predict RSW failure. However, it is not feasible to extract standard mechanical test specimens out of the SCHAZ of the spot-welded structure due to its small size. In this work, the SCHAZ of the spot weld for two AHSS, 3G-980 and PHS-1500, was simulated using a Gleeble® (Dynamic Systems Inc., 323 NY-355, Poestenkill, NY 12140, USA) 3500 thermo-mechanical simulator. An in-situ high-speed IR thermal camera was used to measure the entire temperature field during the Gleeble heat-treatment process, which allowed for the visualization of the temperature distribution in the gauge area. The temperature and hardness data were fit to a Hollomon-Jaffe (HJ) model, which enables hardness prediction in the SCHAZ at any given temperature and time. Using the HJ model, a heat treatment schedule for each material was chosen to produce samples with hardness and microstructure matching the SCHAZ within actual spot weld coupons. Tensile specimens were machined from the coupons heat treated using simulated heat treatment schedules, and mechanical testing was performed. The results showed that the 3G-980 SCHAZ has a slight increase in yield strength and tensile strength, compared to the base metal, due to the formation of fine carbides within the microstructure. In contrast, the SCHAZ of PHS-1500 showed a significant reduction in the yield and tensile strength with yield point elongation behavior due to the reduction of the martensite phase and an increase in carbide formation due to the tempering process.

The magnesium silicate hydrate system (MgO-SiO2-H2O) possesses issues such as susceptibility to cracking, brittleness, and poor volumetric stability, which hinder its development and practical use in engineering applications. This study aimed to enhance the properties of the MgO-SiO2-H2O system by incorporating glass fiber as a reinforcing material. The mechanical properties, shrinkage properties, and properties during accelerated aging were tested at different content levels of glass fiber. Additionally, the reaction mechanism and microscopic morphology were characterized using microscopic testing methods. The results revealed that the addition of glass fiber improved the mechanical properties of the MgO-SiO2-H2O system; meanwhile, with an increase in fiber content, the mechanical properties showed an initial increase followed by a decreasing trend. With a glass fiber content of 0.6%, the system exhibited a flexural strength of 7.9 MPa at 28 d, a compressive strength of 42.5 MPa at 28 d, and a 27.2% increase in splitting tensile strength compared to the control group. At a fiber content of 0.9%, the flexural toughness steadily increased, reaching a maximum value of 2.238 N·m, which is 5.41 times greater than that of the control group. Moreover, the incorporation of glass fiber effectively inhibited the shrinkage of the MgO-SiO2-H2O system. Accelerated aging experiments confirmed that the glass fiber in the MgO-SiO2-H2O system did not undergo significant deterioration or corrosion, thereby maintaining long-term stability. These findings have important theoretical and practical significance for the application and development of the MgO-SiO2-H2O system.

In order to reduce the manufacturing cost of foamed ceramics and expand the application scope of industrial solid waste, in this study, a new type of environment-friendly foamed ceramics was prepared using direct high-temperature foaming with waste silicomanganese slag (SMS) and fly ash (FA) as raw materials and silicon carbide (SiC) as a foaming agent. The influence of SMS content, SiC content, and sintering temperature on the characteristics and microstructure of the specimen were explored. More concretely, the compressive strength, pore morphology, bulk density, and crystalline composition of the foamed ceramics were discussed. The foaming mechanism was also further analyzed. The results showed that including 20% SMS significantly reduced the melt’s viscosity and stimulated bubble expansion. This, in turn, facilitated the creation of a porous structure. Moreover, it was noted that samples containing 20% SMS exhibited an anorthite phase when sintered at 1110 °C, resulting in enhanced compressive strength. The bulk density and compressive strength of the foamed ceramics decreased with an increase in the sintering temperature and SiC content. This trend was primarily attributed to the higher total porosity and the insufficient support of the pore wall to the matrix. The best all-around performance was achieved with 20 wt% SMS, 80 wt% FA as raw material, SiC addition of 1.0 wt%, and a sintering temperature of 1100 °C. Under these conditions, the compressive strength, bulk density, and total porosity of the foamed ceramics were 8.09 MPa, 0.57 g/cm3, and 71.04%, respectively. Taken together, the outstanding porous structure and mechanical properties of this foamed ceramic make it suitable for use as insulation or for building partition materials.

Dendrobium catenatum is a high-value medicinal plant that is predominantly found in high mountain areas, thriving amidst cliffs and rock crevices. However, its wild resources face constant threats from adverse environmental conditions, especially drought stress. Fatty acyl-CoA reductase (FAR) is crucial in plant drought resistance, but there is a lack of research on FAR genes in D. catenatum. In this study, the FAR family genes were identified from the D. catenatum genome. Their genomic characteristics were investigated using bioinformatics techniques, and their expression patterns in different tissues and under 20% PEG8000 conditions mimicking drought stress were analyzed using quantitative real-time RT-PCR (RT-qPCR). Seven DcFAR genes were identified from the D. catenatum genome. The encoded amino acids range between 377 and 587 aa, with molecular weights between 43.41 and 66.15 kD and isoelectric points between 5.55 and 9.02. Based on the phylogenetic relationships, the FAR family genes were categorized into three subgroups, each with similar conserved sequences and gene structures. The cis-acting elements of the promoter regions were assessed, and the results reveal that the DcFAR upstream promoter region contains multiple stress-related elements, suggesting its potential involvement in abiotic stress responses. The RT-qPCR results show distinct expression patterns of DcFAR genes in various plant tissues. It was observed that the expression of most DcFAR genes was upregulated under drought stress. Among them, the expression levels of DcFAR2, DcFAR3, DcFAR5, and DcFAR7 genes under drought stress were 544-, 193-, 183-, and 214-fold higher compared to the control, respectively. These results indicate that DcFAR2/3/5/7 might play significant roles in D. catenatum drought tolerance. This research offers insight into the function of DcFAR genes and provides theoretical support for breeding drought-resistant D. catenatum varieties.

Volatile compounds (VOCs) present in the oil extracted from yellow horn seeds were first analyzed using GC-IMS and GC-O-MS at varying roasting temperatures. A total of 97 VOCs were detected using GC-IMS, while 77 were tentatively identified using GC-O-MS. Moreover, both methods allowed the identification of 24 VOCs, of which the type of aldehydes is the most abundant. Combining the results of GC-IMS, GC-O-MS, OAVs, and VIP, it was concluded that hexanal, 2,5-dimethylpyrazine, heptanal, 2-pentylfuran, 1-hexanol, and 1-octen-3-ol were the key aroma compounds. The PLS-DA and OPLS-DA models have demonstrated the ability to discriminate between different oil roasting temperatures with high accuracy. The roasting temperature of 160 °C was found to yield the highest content of main aroma substances, indicating its optimality for yellow horn seed oil production. These findings will prove beneficial for optimizing industrial production and enhancing oil aroma control.

Many diseases in the human body are related to the level of L-cysteine. Therefore, it is crucial to establish an efficient, simple and sensitive platform for L-cysteine detection. In this work, we synthesized platinum palladium bimetallic nanoparticles (Van-Ptm/Pdn NPs) using vancomycin hydrochloride (Van) as a stabilizer, which exhibited high oxidase-like catalytic activity. In addition, the catalytic kinetics of the Van-Pt1/Pd1 NPs followed the typical Michaelis–Menten equation, exhibiting a strong affinity for 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine substrates. More importantly, we developed a simple and effective strategy for the sensitive colorimetric detection of L-cysteine using biocompatible Van-Pt1/Pd1 NPs. The detection limit was low, at 0.07 μM, which was lower than the values for many previously reported enzyme-like detection systems. The colorimetric method of the L-cysteine assay had good selectivity. The established method for the detection of L-cysteine showed promise for biomedical analysis.

Microplastics (MPs) are ubiquitous in environmental media, and their harmful effects on MPs on the ecosystem have attracted more and more attention. Once released into the environment, MPs can trigger oxidative degradation through ultraviolet (UV) to cause photoaging. Photoaging significantly affects the properties of MPs, which leads to changing their environmental behaviors and increasing environmental risks. In this review, the generation of MPs under UV irradiation and the influence of environmental factors on the photoaging of MPs were discussed. Photoaging of MPs is an important process affecting the migration, transformation and interaction of pollutants in water and soil. In order to fully predict the fate and environmental interaction of MPs, more researches are needed in the future to explore the photoaging behavior of different types of MPs under natural environmental conditions.

This paper develops a concentration retrieval technique based on the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm, which is used for a calibration-free wavelength modulation spectroscopy system. As compared with the commonly used technique based on the Levenberg–Marquardt (LM) algorithm, the PSO-based method is less dependent on the pre-characterization of the laser tuning parameters. We analyzed the key parameters affecting the performance of the PSO-based technique and determined their optimal parameter values through testing. Furthermore, we conducted a comparative analysis of the efficacy of two techniques in detecting C2H2 concentration. The results showed that the PSO-based concentration retrieval technique is about 63 times faster than the LM-based one in achieving the same accuracy. Within 5 s, the PSO-based technique can produce findings that are generally consistent with the values anticipated.

Flavonoids are considered to be critical metabolites in regulating plant responses to abiotic stress. Chalcone synthase (CHS) catalyzes the first key step in the flavonoid biosynthesis pathway. However, there is no in-depth information on the sequence and functional analysis of CHS genes in Dendrobium catenatum. In this study, a total of 14 DcCHS genes were identified, encoding proteins of 349–504 amino acids in length, a protein molecular weight ranging between 39.08 and 56.56 kDa, and isoelectric points from 5.64 to 9.63. The DcCHS proteins were then divided into three groups according to their phylogenetic relationships. The members of each group had similar conserved motifs and gene structures. Quantitative real-time RT-PCR (RT-qPCR) analysis revealed that the DcCHS genes exhibited variable expression patterns in the different plant tissues evaluated. Furthermore, six genes were differentially expressed following exposure to abiotic stresses: DcCHS-6, DcCHS-5/-6, DcCHS-13/-14, and DcCHS-6/-8/-9/-13, which were specifically expressed in response to drought, heat, cold, and salt stress, respectively. This is the first genome-wide analysis of the CHS genes in D. catenatum, and our findings can provide essential information for a better understanding of the function of DcCHS genes, thus facilitating further research on D. catenatum stress tolerance.

Economic fruit forest is an important part of Chinese agriculture with high economic value and ecological benefits. Using UAV multi-spectral images to research the classification of economic fruit forests based on deep learning is of great significance for accurately understanding the distribution and scale of fruit forests and the status quo of national economic fruit forest resources. Based on the multi-spectral remote sensing images of UAV, this paper constructed semantic segmentation data of economic fruit forests, conducted a comparative study on the classification and identification of economic fruit forests of FCN, SegNet, and U-Net classic semantic segmentation models, and proposed an improved ISDU-Net model. The recognition accuracies of the ISDU-Net were 87.73%, 70.68%, 78.69%, and 0.84, respectively, in terms of pixel accuracy, average intersection ratio, frequency weight intersection ratio, and Kappa coefficient, which were 3.19%, 8.90%, and 4.51% higher than the original U-Net model. The results showed that the improved ISDU-Net could effectively improve the learning ability of the model, perform better in the prediction of short sample categories, obtain a higher classification accuracy of fruit forest crops, and provide a new idea for the research on accurate fruit forest identification.

The study of massive neutrinos and their interactions is a critical aspect of contemporary cosmology. Recent advances in parallel computation and high-performance computing provide new opportunities for accurately constraining Large-Scale Structures (LSS). In this paper, we introduce the TianNu cosmological N-body simulation during the co-evolution of massive neutrino and cold dark matter components via the CUBEP3M code running on the supercomputer Tianhe-2 and TianNu’s connected works. We start by analyzing 2.537×107 dark halos from the scientific data of TianNu simulation, and compare their angular momentum with the matched halos from neutrino-free TianZero, revealing a dependence of angular momentum modulus on neutrino injection at scales below 50 Mpc and around 10 Mpc.

Group I chitin deacetylases (CDAs), CDA1 and CDA2, play an essential role in cuticle formation and molting in the process of insect wing development. A recent report showed that trachea are able to take up a secreted CDA1 (serpentine, serp) produced in the fat body to support normal tracheal development in the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster. However, whether CDAs in wing tissue were produced locally or derived from the fat body remains an open question. To address this question, we applied tissue-specific RNAi against DmCDA1 (serpentine, serp) and DmCDA2 (vermiform, verm) in the fat body or the wing and analyzed the resulting phenotypes. We found that repression of serp and verm in the fat body had no effect on wing morphogenesis. RT-qPCR showed that RNAi against serp or verm in the fat body autonomously reduced their expression levels of serp or verm in the fat body but had no non-autonomous effect on the expression in wings. Furthermore, we showed that inhibition of serp or verm in the developing wing caused wing morphology and permeability deficiency. Taken together, the production of Serp and Verm in the wing was autonomous and independent of the fat body.

Soil salinization is a critical and global environmental problem. Effectively mapping and monitoring the spatial distribution of soil salinity is essential. The main aim of this work was to map soil salinity in Shandong Province located on the Yellow River Delta of China using Sentinel-1/2 remote sensing data and digital elevation model (DEM) data, coupled with soil sampling data, and combined with four regression models: support vector regression (SVR), stepwise multi-regression (SMR), partial least squares regression (PLSR) and random forest regression (RFR). For these purposes, 60 soil samples were collected during the field survey conducted from 9 to 14 October 2019, corresponding to the Sentinel-1/2 and DEM data. Then we established a soil salinity and feature dataset based on the sampled data and the features extracted from Sentinel-1/2 and DEM data. This study adopted the feature importance of the RF model to screen all features. The results showed that the CRSI index made the greatest contribution in retrieving soil salinity in this region. In this paper, 18 sampling points were used to validate and compare the performance of the four models. The results reveal that, compared with the other regression models, the PLSR model has the best performance (R2 = 0.66, and RMSE = 1.30). Finally, the PLSR method was used to predict the spatial distribution of soil salinity in the Yellow River Delta. We concluded that the model can be used effectively for the quantitative estimation of soil salinity and provides a useful tool for ecological construction.

Nitrogen is an essential nutrient for plant growth. However, the excessive use of nitrogen fertilizers not only increases production cost, but also has negative a impact on the environment. The purpose of this study was to quantify the source-sink characteristics and length of each growth stage in two potato varieties under different nitrogen application rates. This clarifies the source-sink coordination characteristics of the nitrogen-efficient variety and the source-sink coordination mechanisms of high nitrogen use efficiency (NUE). Field experiments were conducted in 2019, 2020, and 2021 using a split-plot design, with a nitrogen application rate of (0; 150 kg·ha−1; 300 kg·ha−1) as the main plot and variety (J, nitrogen-efficient variety Jizhang 12; Y, nitrogen-inefficient variety Youjia 70) as the subplot. The results showed that the yield and NUE of Jizhang 12 at 300 kg·ha−1 were, on average, 90.73% and 75.15% higher than those of Youjia 70, respectively. The NUE and nitrogen utilization efficiency of Jizhang 12 increased on average, with decreasing N application at 68.66% and 24.53%, which were higher than those of Youjia 70 at 62.89% and 10.86%. Quantitative analysis of the source and sink showed that the Jizhang 12 had a higher source and sink capacity of 23.45 g and 51.85 g, respectively, and the maximum source and sink activity was on average 0.28 g·plant−1·d−1 and 1.47 g·plant−1·d−1 higher, and the growth period of the source and sink was on average 24 days and 7 days longer, respectively. On the basis of these results, the nitrogen-efficient varieties had a higher yield base and a smaller reduction in NUE with reduced N application. In terms of source-sink growth, N-efficient varieties lasted longer at the seedling and tuber initiation stages, when potatoes grew above ground and source organs grew for longer periods, providing a solid foundation for later sink growth, as evidenced by their higher source-sink activity, capacity, and growth time than N-inefficient varieties.

The Chinese tongue sole (Cynoglossus semilaevis) is a traditional, precious fish in China. Due to the large growth difference between males and females, the investigation of their sex determination and differentiation mechanisms receives a great deal of attention. Forkhead Box O (FoxO) plays versatile roles in the regulation of sex differentiation and reproduction. Our recent transcriptomic analysis has shown that foxo genes may participate in the male differentiation and spermatogenesis of Chinese tongue sole. In this study, six Csfoxo members (Csfoxo1a, Csfoxo3a, Csfoxo3b, Csfoxo4, Csfoxo6-like, and Csfoxo1a-like) were identified. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that these six members were clustered into four groups corresponding to their denomination. The expression patterns of the gonads at different developmental stages were further analyzed. All members showed high levels of expression in the early stages (before 6 months post-hatching), and this expression was male-biased. In addition, promoter analysis found that the addition of C/EBPα and c-Jun transcription factors enhanced the transcriptional activities of Csfoxo1a, Csfoxo3a, Csfoxo3b, and Csfoxo4. The siRNA-mediated knockdown of the Csfoxo1a, Csfoxo3a, and Csfoxo3b genes in the testicular cell line of Chinese tongue sole affected the expression of genes related to sex differentiation and spermatogenesis. These results have broadened the understanding of foxo’s function and provide valuable data for studying the male differentiation of tongue sole.

Magnesium silicate hydrate (M-S-H) cement, a type of green building material, has poor volume stability (i.e., large shrinkage deformation), which limits its application. As a new type of admixture, the behavior of a shrinkage-reducing admixture (SRA) in M-S-H cement has not been studied. Therefore, in this research, the effect of SRA on the shrinkage properties of the M-S-H cement system was evaluated. The mechanism of SRA was investigated by surface tension measurement, hydration heat testing, thermogravimetric analysis, and pore structure analysis. Experimental results indicate that SRA can reduce the shrinkage of the M-S-H mortar, and the optimal effect is exerted when the dosage is 3.0%, drying shrinkage decreases by 22.6%, and autogenous shrinkage decreases by 60% on day 28. However, it may also adversely affect strength development. The presence of SRA in M-S-H cement can reduce pore solution surface tension, delay hydration, and maintain relative humidity within the slurry, which can be maintained at 82.0% on day 28. It can also increase pore size and porosity. The inhibitory effect of SRA on the shrinkage of M-S-H mortar is valuable for its future practical applications.

In this study, three kinds of iron minerals, ferrihydrite, hematite, and goethite, were prepared by a simple coprecipitation method for the adsorption and removal of phenylarsonic acid (PAA). The adsorption of PAA was explored, and the influences of ambient temperature, pH, and co-existing anions on adsorption were evaluated. The experimental results show that rapid adsorption of PAA occurs within 180 min in the presence of iron minerals, and the adsorption process conforms to a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The isothermal adsorption of PAA by ferrihydrite, goethite, and hematite agrees with the Redlich–Peterson model. The maximum adsorption capacities of PAA are 63.44 mg/g, 19.03 mg/g, and 26.27 mg/g for ferrihydrite, goethite, and hematite, respectively. Environmental factor experiments illustrated that an alkaline environment will significantly inhibit the adsorption of PAA by iron minerals. CO32−, SiO32−, and PO43− in the environment will also significantly reduce the adsorption performance of the three iron minerals. The adsorption mechanism was analyzed by FTIR and XPS, which indicated that ligand exchange between the surface hydroxyl group and the arsine group leads to the formation of an Fe-O-As bond, and electrostatic attraction between the iron minerals and PAA played an important role in the adsorption.

Heat shock proteins 70 (HSP70s) are known to play essential roles in organisms’ response mechanisms to various environmental stresses. However, no systematic identification and functional analysis has been conducted for HSP70s in the turbot (Scophthalmus maximus), a commercially important worldwide flatfish. Herein, 16 HSP70 genes unevenly distributed on nine chromosomes were identified in the turbot at the genome-wide level. Analyses of gene structure, motif composition, and phylogenetic relationships provided valuable data on the HSP70s regarding their evolution, classification, and functional diversity. Expression profiles of the HSP70 genes under five different stresses were investigated by examining multiple RNA-seq datasets. Results showed that 10, 6, 8, 10, and 9 HSP70 genes showed significantly up- or downregulated expression after heat-induced, salinity-induced, and Enteromyxum scophthalmi, Vibrio anguillarum, and Megalocytivirus infection-induced stress, respectively. Among them, hsp70 (hspa1a), hspa1b, and hspa5 showed significant responses to each kind of induced stress, and qPCR analyses further validated their involvement in comprehensive anti-stress, indicating their involvement in organisms’ anti-stress mechanisms. These findings not only provide new insights into the biological function of HSP70s in turbot adapting to various environmental stresses, but also contribute to the development of molecular-based selective breeding programs for the production of stress-resistant turbot strains in the aquaculture industry.

Pinus thunbergii (P. thunbergii) is a gymnosperm with important economic and ecological value. In order to investigate the diagnosis and defense mechanism of P. thunbergii against Bursaphelenchus xylophilus (the pinewood nematode, PWN), the needles of P. thunbergii seedlings on the fifth day after being infected by PWN were taken as samples for transcriptome sequencing analysis. Compared with the control group, 647 genes were differentially expressed in the treatment group, of which 277 genes were upregulated and 370 genes were downregulated. Enrichment analysis showed that most of these differentially expressed genes were abundant in the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites, pathogen interaction and hormone signal transduction. In addition, among the differential genes, NBS-LRR genes, thiamine-metabolizing enzymes, phenylalanine ammonia lyase and acetaldehyde dehydrogenase were screened and analyzed. The analysis of the response of P. thunbergii to PWN stress and its disease resistance genes lays a foundation for the breeding of disease-resistant P. thunbergii in the future.
