Background/Objectives: In a tonal language like Chinese, phonologically contrasting tones signify word meanings at the syllable level. Although the development of lexical tone perception ability has been examined in many behavioral studies, its developmental trajectory from childhood to adulthood at the neural level remains unclear. This cross-sectional study aimed to examine the issue by measuring the mismatch negativity (MMN) response to a Chinese lexical tonal contrast in three groups. Methods: The MMN response to a flat-falling tonal contrast (Tone1 versus Tone4) were recorded from children (25 participants aged 6–8), adolescents (26 participants aged 12–14), and young adults (20 participants aged 18–24). Nonsense speech stimuli were also used by superimposing Tone1 and Tone4 on an English syllable. Results: All three groups demonstrated typical early MMN responses in both the meaningful and nonsense syllable conditions. However, the MMN amplitudes varied significantly across groups, with the child group showing smaller responses compared to the adolescent and adult groups, while the latter two groups had similar MMN amplitudes. Conclusions: Neural sensitivity to tonal contrasts is not fully mature in children and reaches a more adult-like level during adolescence, with no significant difference in sensitivity to meaningful versus nonsense syllables. These results provide new insights into the neural development of lexical tone perception in a tonal language, highlighting its maturation during adolescence in this process.

High-speed segmented annular seals are often subjected to friction and wear, and the groove design on the sealing surface can effectively suppress this loss. For the purpose of improving the sealing performance, the segmented annular seal models of three structures are established, and the accuracy of the calculation model is verified by comparing with the previous results. Through fluid–solid–thermal coupled analysis, the flow field characteristics, opening characteristics, and leakage characteristics of the segmented annular seal under high working condition parameters were studied. The results show that the setting of the shallow groove forms the hydrodynamic effect by squeezing and hindering the flow of fluid in the clearance. The increase in rotational speed and pressure difference can promote the increase in the opening force, while the temperature has no significant effect on the opening of the seal. Seals with ladder-like grooves have the best opening performance, and seals without shallow grooves are already difficult to open under conditions of high pressure difference and large spring forces. Temperature and pressure difference are the main factors affecting the leakage of the seal, while the influence of the rotation speed is small. When the sealed pressure increases from 0.15 MPa to 0.4 MPa, the maximum increase in the leakage of the seal with specific groove design is 4.657 times the original. As the temperature rises from 420 K to 620 K, the maximum decrease in the three structures is up to 22.9%. Among the seals of the three structures, seals with ladder-like grooves have medium leakage. This research will contribute to the improvement of research methods for the sealing performance of segmented annular rings, especially for the evaluation of groove design and opening characteristics.

The Nishihara creep model is an extremely effective method in the field of sandstone creep model research. However, the Nishihara creep model curve for sandstone under the marine environment (the coupled effect of chemical corrosion and temperature) does not fit the actual creep test data well. Based on the Nishihara creep model, we discovered that, on the one hand, the viscoelastic elements in the Nishihara model are replaced by the viscoelastic elements containing temperature and pH factors, which can accurately describe the influence of temperature and pH on rock creep characteristics; on the other hand, the viscoplastic elements in the Nishihara model are replaced by nonlinear viscoplastic elements, which can accurately describe the accelerated creep stage of the rock mass. After modifying Nishihara’s creep model twice, a new temperature–pH damage nonlinear creep model is established. The creep curve of the temperature–pH damage nonlinear creep model is compared with the creep test data of sandstone. The comparison results indicate that the creep curve of the nonlinear creep model has a high degree of fit with the creep test data of sandstone (accuracy > 92%). This validates the correctness of the newly established temperature–pH damage nonlinear creep model presented in this paper, demonstrating that the new model can effectively reflect the influence of temperature and pH on the creep characteristics of sandstone.

Single-phase concentrated solid-solution alloys (CSAs) have exhibited excellent mechanical and radiation tolerance properties, making them potential candidate materials for nuclear applications. These excellent properties are closely related to dislocation movements, which depend on the stacking fault energies (SFEs). In CSAs, SFEs show large fluctuations due to variations in the local atomic environments in the vicinity of the stacking faults. In this work, first-principle calculations were performed to investigate the origin of the fluctuations in the SFEs of the widely studied CSA, NiCoCr, which show a very wide distribution from about −200 mJ/m2 to 60 mJ/m2. Compared to the common understanding that only atoms in close proximity to the stacking fault influence the SFEs in pure metals and dilute alloys, charge redistribution can be observed in several nearby planes of the stacking fault in NiCoCr, indicating that atoms several atomic layers away from stacking fault also contribute to the SFEs. Our analysis shows that Cr plays a major role in the large fluctuation in the SFEs of NiCoCr based on both electronic and magnetic responses. The flexible electronic structure of Cr facilitates easier charge transfer with Cr in several nearby atomic planes near the stacking fault, leading to significant changes in the d-electron number, orbital occupation number, and magnetic moments of Cr.

Orphaned colonies of Cryptotermes domesticus readily produce replacement reproductives and continue propagation. In this study, we aimed to investigate the production and fecundity of neotenic reproductives in 5-year-old colonies of C. domesticus after orphaning. All 15 experimental colonies were successfully re-established by the neotenic reproductive pair. Three types of neotenic reproductives with various wing-bud lengths were observed: type I with micro wing buds, type II with short wing buds, and type III with long wing buds. Four patterns of pairs made up of these neotenics, namely, type I + type II, type I + type III, type II + type II, and type II + type III, exhibited reproductive capacities similar to those of the primary reproductive pair. We speculated that these neotenic reproductives were derived from various nymphal instars. The 5-year-old colonies had three instars of nymphs, with the majority being in the second instar, followed by the first. Thus, the combination of neotenic reproductives with short wing buds and micro wing buds was the dominant differentiation pathway of the orphaned colonies. After the removal of the original primary reproductive pair, the nymphs matured into neotenic reproductives and took over reproduction in the colony in 107.40 ± 15.18 days. This study highlights the importance of quarantine and routine inspection of wood, as well as the significance of early prevention and control of C. domesticus infestation in wood. Moreover, this study confirms the high differentiation and reproductive capacities of C. domesticus.

Numerous studies have observed and analyzed the dynamics of language change from a diffusion perspective. As a complex and changeable system, the process of language change is characterized by a long memory that conforms to ultraslow diffusion. However, it is not perfectly suited for modeling with the traditional diffusion model. The Caputo nonlocal structural derivative is a further development of the classic Caputo fractional derivative. Its kernel function, characterized as an arbitrary function, proves highly effective in dealing with ultraslow diffusion. In this study, we utilized an extended logarithmic function to formulate a Caputo nonlocal structural derivative diffusion model for qualitatively analyzing the evolution process of language. The mean square displacement that grows logarithmically was derived through the Tauberian theorem and the Fourier–Laplace transform. Its effectiveness and credibility were verified by the appearance of already popular words on Japanese blogs. Compared to the random diffusion model, the Caputo nonlocal structural derivative diffusion model proves to be more precise in simulating the process of language change. The microscopic mechanism of ultraslow diffusion was explored using the continuous time random walk model, which involves a logarithmic function with a long tail. Both models incorporate memory effects, which can provide useful guidance for modeling diffusion behavior in other social phenomena.

The characterization and understanding of crack evolution in non-uniform geological structures are crucial for predicting the mechanical response of rock-like materials or structures under varying loading conditions. In this study, an improved Peridynamic model with a degree of heterogeneity characterized by random pre-breaking “bonds” coefficients is introduced to capture the intricacies of crack initiation, propagation, and branching behaviors in heterogeneous rock-like materials. MATLAB discrete programs for heterogeneous material models and PD simulation programs based on the FORTRAN language were developed. The effectiveness of the heterogeneous PD model in simulating crack propagation and branching patterns in heterogeneous materials has been verified through dynamic and static (quasi-static) loading cases with pre-notch. The different levels of heterogeneity not only affect the direction of crack propagation but also determine the crack deflection direction and branching patterns. The crack propagation path appears to possess obvious asymmetry in the crack propagation direction. As the load applied continues to increase, the asymmetric multi-crack branching phenomenon will occur. The higher the level of heterogeneity, the more complex the behaviors of crack propagation and branching become. This research provides valuable insights into the interplay of material heterogeneity and crack evolution, offering a foundation for improved numerical simulations and contributing to the broader field of geomechanics.

The ecological security of cultivated land critically depends on maintaining the quality of the land under cultivation. For the security of the nation’s grain supply, the evaluation and early warning of cultivated land quality (CLQ) are essential. However, previous studies on the assessment of the ecological safety of CLQ only rigidly standardized the assessment indicators and failed to investigate the positive and negative trends and spatiotemporal driving factors of the indicators. The main objective of this study was to develop a drive–pressure–state–response (DPSR) model to identify the hierarchical structure of indicators, using an improved matter–element model to assess the CLQ in the black soil region of northeastern China from 2001 to 2020. A panel data model was employed to explore the crucial drivers of CLQ warnings. The findings reveal that socioeconomic development has a potential impact on the improvement of CLQ. CLQ is generally in a secure state, with 69.71% of cities with no warnings and only 3.46% and 0.13% of cities under serious and extreme warnings, respectively. Compared with 2001, the CLQ in 2020 effectively improved by socioeconomic development and the conservation and reasonable utilization of arable land. According to the early warning results, the cultivated land in the northern regions was of higher quality than that in the southern regions. Moreover, the CLQ was significantly positively correlated with the agricultural GDP growth rate, grain yield per unit of cultivated land area, annual precipitation, and the habitat quality index, and was significantly negatively correlated with land carrying capacity. The findings of this study can provide a scientific and targeted basis for black soil conservation and utilization.

Objectives: To investigate the predictive ability of clinical and chest computed tomography (CT) features to predict the severity of symptomatic immune checkpoint inhibitor-related pneumonitis (CIP). Methods: This study included 34 patients diagnosed with symptomatic CIP (grades 2–5) and divided into mild (grade 2) and severe CIP (grades 3–5) groups. The groups’ clinical and chest CT features were analyzed. Three manual scores (extent, image finding, and clinical symptom scores) were conducted to evaluate the diagnostic performance alone and in combination. Results: There were 20 cases of mild CIP and 14 cases of severe CIP. More severe CIP occurred within 3 months than after 3 months (11 vs. 3 cases, p = 0.038). Severe CIP was significantly associated with fever (p < 0.001) and the acute interstitial pneumonia/acute respiratory distress syndrome pattern (p = 0.001). The diagnostic performance of chest CT scores (extent score and image finding score) was better than that of clinical symptom score. The combination of the three scores demonstrated the best diagnostic value, with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.948. Conclusions: The clinical and chest CT features have important application value in assessing the disease severity of symptomatic CIP. We recommend the routine use of chest CT in a comprehensive clinical evaluation.

The mobile manipulator is a floating base structure with wide space operability. An integrated mechanical device for mobile operation is formed through the organic combination of the mobile platform and multi-axis manipulator. This paper presents a general kinematic modeling method for mobile manipulators and gives the relevant derivation of the dynamic model. Secondly, the null-space composition of the mobile manipulator is analyzed, the task space is divided, and a variety of task-switching criteria are designed. Finally, a hybrid control model combining dynamic feedback and synovial control based on dynamic parameter identification is designed, and stability proof is given. The theoretical method is also verified by the experimental platform. The proposed method can effectively improve the control accuracy of the mobile manipulator, and the hybrid control method can effectively control the output torque to reach the ideal state.

Low-level wind shear is a vital weather process affecting aircraft safety while taking off and landing and is known as the “aircraft killer” in the aviation industry. As a result, effective monitoring and warning are required. Several ramps detection algorithms for low-level wind shear based on glide path scanning of lidar have been developed, including double and simple ramp detection, with the ramp length extension and contraction strategies corresponding to the algorithm. However, current algorithms must be improved to determine the maximum shear value and location. In this paper, a new efficient algorithm based on the shear intensity factor value is presented, in which wind speed changes and distance are both considered when calculating wind shear. Simultaneously, the effectiveness of the improved algorithm has been validated through numerical simulation experiments. Results reveal that the improved algorithm can determine the maximum intensity value and wind shear location more accurately than the traditional algorithm. In addition, the new algorithm improved the detection ability of lidar for weak wind shear.

Understanding the void swelling dependence on irradiation dose for structural materials is critical for the design and operation of advanced nuclear reactors. Due to their easy accessibility in high-voltage transmission electron microscopes, electron beams have been frequently employed to investigate the void swelling mechanisms. Here, we build a general model to describe the radiation-induced swelling produced by energetic electrons. Based on this model, we develop a quantitative relation between void swelling and irradiation dose, which is in good agreement with experimental data. By extrapolating to high-dose swelling in electron-irradiated alloys, our model validation is consistent with available experiments. Furthermore, the model is well supported by our phase-field simulations.

Effective approaches to exploiting the biomass of the abundant invasive weed Mikania micrantha Kunth are limited. Termites have been a focus of significant attention as mediators of biomass-processing owing to their ability to digest lignocellulose. Here, the GC/TOF-MS approach was employed to assess the effects of a diet composed of M. micrantha leaves on Coptotermes formosanus workers, with the growth performance of these workers also being assessed. The workers increased their dietary intake when fed M. micrantha leaves, with a concomitant gradual increase in mortality rate. A total of 62 differentially abundant metabolites and nine significantly affected pathways were found when comparing termites fed M. micrantha leaves to pinewood. Key metabolites, including carbohydrates, polyols, 4-hydroxyphenylacetic acid, and their related metabolic pathways, suggested that termites can digest and utilize M. micrantha-derived lignocellulose. However, changes in the tryptophan metabolism, tyrosine metabolism, and sphingolipid metabolism suggest an adverse effect of M. micrantha leaves on antioxidant activity and signal transduction in termites. Overall, this study identified the key metabolites and pathways associated with the response of these termites to dietary changes and the effect of M. micrantha on termites.

Disturbing the lignocellulose digestive system of termites is considered to be a promising approach for termite control. The research on the tolerance mechanism of the termite lignocellulose digestive system to harmful environment conditions is limited. In this study, we keep Coptotermes formosanus Skiraki under a non-lethal toxic condition by feeding the termites with filter paper containing the kojic acid (a low toxic insecticide). The effects of low toxic stress on the activities and gene expressions of host/symbiotic originated lignocellulases, and on the symbiotic microbial community structure of C. formosanus were explored. Our result showed that the low toxic stress would lead to the synchronous decrease of cellulase and hemicellulase activities, and supplementary increase of corresponding gene expressions. The symbiotic community maintained its role as the main force in the lignocellulolytic system of C. formosanus. Meanwhile, a large number of rare taxa were significantly enriched by kojic acid treatment. These numerically inconspicuous bacterial populations might be responsible for the functions similar to phenoloxidase or insecticide detoxification and enable C. formosanus to tolerate the harmful environment. Overall, our data suggested that the digestive adaptation of C. formosanus to physiotoxic feeding is closely related to the triple collaboration of termites–flagellates–bacteria.

Low-temperature environments can strongly affect the normal growth and health of livestock. In winter, cold weather can be accompanied by strong winds that aggravate the effects of cold on livestock. In this study, two experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of low temperature and/or wind speed on physiological indices, rumen microbiota, immune responses and oxidative stress in sheep. When sheep were exposed to cold temperature and/or stronger wind speeds, the average daily gain (ADG) decreased (p < 0.05), and the abundance of Lachnospiraceae was significantly higher (p < 0.05). The acetate and propionate contents and the proportion of propionate in the rumen also significantly reduced (p < 0.05). The immunoglobulin G (IgG) and TH1-related cytokines in the blood were significantly lower (p < 0.05). However, antioxidant enzyme contents were significantly increased and the concentration of malondialdehyde (MDA) was reduced (p < 0.05). In a cold environment, the abundance of Lachnospiraceae in the rumen of sheep was highly enriched, and the decreasing of propionate might be one of the factors affecting the immunity of the animals, the sheep did not suffer from oxidative damage during the experiment.

The outbreak of pseudorabies in China, caused by more virulent pseudorabies virus (PRV) than the classical strains, has led to considerable economic losses. In this study, PRV strain HNXY was isolated from the Henan province of China in 2015 from the pig farm with severe reproductive failure in sows and a high mortality in piglets. The 50% tissue culture infectious doses (TCID50) of HNXY in Vero cells were examined to be 106.5/mL, and the neutralisation titer against Bartha-K61 was significantly higher than against HNXY when tested with the serum from Bartha-K61 vaccinated pigs. The 50% lethal doses (LD50) of HNXY to six-week-old BALB/c mice and two-month-old PRV-free pigs were both 102.3 TCID50. HNXY was classified as genotype II, and numerous amino acid variations were found in gB, gE, gC, gD, TK, and RR1 proteins, compared with PRV from other countries or those prevalent in China before 2012. The attenuated rHNXY-∆TK/∆gE was further constructed, which presented significantly smaller plaques than HNXY, as well as the similar growth kinetics. rHNXY-∆TK/∆gE was confirmed to be non-pathogenic to six-week-old BALB/c mice and zero-day-old piglets. This study isolated updated PRV promising to develop into a new vaccine candidate.

To ensure successful hosting of the 2022 Olympic Winter Games, a comprehensive understanding of the wind field characteristics in the Chongli Mountain region is essential. The purpose of this research was to accurately simulate the microscale wind in the Chongli Mountain region. Coupling the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model with a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model is a method for simulating the microscale wind field over complex terrain. The performance of the WRF-CFD model in the Chongli Mountain region was enhanced from two aspects. First, as WRF offers multiple physical schemes, a sensitivity analysis was performed to evaluate which scheme provided the best boundary condition for CFD. Second, to solve the problem of terrain differences between the WRF and CFD models, an improved method capable of coupling these two models is proposed. The results show that these improvements can enhance the performance of the WRF-CFD model and produce a more accurate microscale simulation of the wind field in the Chongli Mountain region.

FXIa is suggested as a major target for anticoagulant drug discovery because of reduced risk of bleeding. In this paper, we defined 5-phenyl-1H-pyrazole-3-carboxylic acid derivatives as privileged fragments for FXIa inhibitors’ lead discovery. After replacing the (E)-3-(5-chloro-2-(1H-tetrazol-1-yl)phenyl)acrylamide moiety in compound 3 with 5-(3-chlorophenyl)-1H-pyrazole-3-carboxamide, we traveled from FXIa inhibitor 3 to a scaffold that fused the privileged fragments into a pharmacophore for FXIa inhibitors. Subsequently, we synthesized and assessed the FXIa inhibitory potency of a series of 5-phenyl-1H-pyrazole-3-carboxamide derivatives with different P1, P1′ and P2′moiety. Finally, the SAR of them was systematically investigated to afford the lead compound 7za (FXIa Ki = 90.37 nM, 1.5× aPTT in rabbit plasma = 43.33 μM) which exhibited good in vitro inhibitory potency against FXIa and excellent in vitro coagulation activities. Furthermore, the binding mode of 7za with FXIa was studied and the results suggest that the 2-methylcyclopropanecarboxamide group of 7za makes 2 direct hydrogen bonds with Tyr58B and Thr35 in the FXIa backbone, making 7za binds to FXIa in a highly efficient manner.

Factor Xa (FXa) plays a significant role in the blood coagulation cascade and it has become a promising target for anticoagulation drugs. Three oral direct FXa inhibitors have been approved by the FDA for treating thrombotic diseases. By structure-activity relationship (SAR) analysis upon these FXa inhibitors, a series of novel anthranilamide-based FXa inhibitors were designed and synthesized. According to our study, compounds 1a, 1g and 1s displayed evident FXa inhibitory activity and excellent selectivity over thrombin in in vitro inhibition activities studies. Compounds 1g and 1s also exhibited pronounced anticoagulant activities in in vitro anticoagulant activity studies.

We have recently developed a bivalent strategy to provide novel compounds that potentially target multiple risk factors involved in the development of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Our previous studies employing a bivalent compound with a shorter spacer (17MN) implicated that this compound can localize into mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum (ER), thus interfering with the change of mitochondria membrane potential (MMP) and Ca2+ levels in MC65 cells upon removal of tetracycline (TC). In this report, we examined the effects by a bivalent compound with a longer spacer (21MO) in MC65 cells. Our results demonstrated that 21MO suppressed the change of MMP, possibly via interaction with the mitochondrial complex I in MC65 cells. Interestingly, 21MO did not show any effects on the Ca2+ level upon TC removal in MC65 cells. Our previous studies suggested that the mobilization of Ca2+ in MC65 cells, upon withdraw of TC, originated from ER, so the results implicated that 21MO may preferentially interact with mitochondria in MC65 cells under the current experimental conditions. Collectively, the results suggest that bivalent compounds with varied spacer length and cell membrane anchor moiety may exhibit neuroprotective activities via different mechanisms of action.
