Owing to the massive expansion and intermittent nature of renewable power, green hydrogen production, storage, and transportation technologies with improved economic returns need to be developed. Moreover, the slowness of the dehydrogenation reaction is a primary barrier to the commercialization of liquid organic hydrogen carrier (LOHC) technology. The present study focused on increasing the speed of dehydrogenation, resulting in the proposal of a triple-loop dehydrogenation system comprising reaction, heating, and chilling loops. The reactor has a rotating cage containing a packed bed of catalyst pellets, which is designed to enhance both heat and mass transfer by helping to detach precipitated hydrogen bubbles from the catalyst surface. In addition, the centrifugal force aids in isolating the gas phase from the LOHC liquid. A dehydrogenation experiment was conducted using the reaction and chilling loops, which revealed that the average hydrogen production rate during the first hour was 52.6 LPM (liter per minute) from 26.3 L of perhydro-dibenzyl-toluene with 1.5 kg of 0.5 wt% Pt/Al2O3 catalyst. This was approximately 48% more than the value predicted with the reaction kinetics measured with a small-scale plug flow dehydrogenation reactor with less than 1.0 g of 5.0 wt% Pt/Al2O3 catalyst. The concept, construction methods, and results of the preliminary gas infiltration, flow visualization, and reactor pumping experiments are also described in this paper.

The efficient dispersion of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) has been the subject of extensive research over the past decade. Despite these efforts, achieving individually dispersed SWCNTs at high concentrations remains challenging. In this study, we address the limitations associated with conventional methods, such as defect formation, excessive surfactant use, and the use of corrosive solvents. Our novel dispersion method utilizes the spontaneous charging of SWCNTs in a solvated electron system created by dissolving potassium in hexamethyl phosphoramide (HMPA). The resulting charged SWCNTs (c-SWCNTs) can be directly dispersed in the charging medium using only magnetic stirring, leading to defect-free c-SWCNT dispersions with high concentrations of up to 20 mg/mL. The successful dispersion of individual c-SWCNT strands is confirmed by their liquid-crystalline behavior. Importantly, the dispersion medium for c-SWCNTs exhibits no reactivity with metals, polymers, or other organic solvents. This versatility enables a wide range of applications, including electrically conductive free-standing films produced via conventional blade coating, wet-spun fibers, membrane electrodes, thermal composites, and core-shell hybrid microparticles.

Research was conducted to improve the system efficiency of a fuel-processing system combined with a hydrogen-purification system to supply hydrogen to a 10 kW residential building proton-exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). The system consists of a steam-reforming reactor, a water–gas shift reactor, heat exchangers and a pressure swing adsorption (PSA) system, increasing the purity of the produced hydrogen by over 99.97%. Aspen Plus® and Aspen adsorption® simulators were used to optimize operating conditions by calculating thermal efficiency and hydrogen-production yield under various temperature and pressure conditions in the reformer. To optimize the hydrogen-production system, simulations were performed under conditions of 1 to 10 atm and 600 to 1000 °C, and simulations were also performed while maintaining the PSA pressure at 9 atm. The overall system efficiency was expressed as a function of methane conversion, and the methane conversion was expressed as a function of reformer temperature and pressure. The fuel-processing system showed the highest thermal efficiency of 82.40% at a pressure of 1 atm and a temperature range of 800 °C. For the combined system of a fuel-processing system and a hydrogen-purification system, the highest hydrogen-production yield was 43.17% at 800 °C and 1 atm.

To increase the efficiency of a fuel processor and HT-PEMFC (high temperature-proton exchange membrane fuel cell) combined system, it is essential to improve the efficiency of the fuel processor. In this research, the fuel processor was simulated by the Aspen Hysys® simulator, and the effect of the various operating conditions on the total efficiency was investigated. The thermal efficiency of the fuel processor increased as the temperature and S/C (steam-to-carbon) ratio increased, and the efficiency was higher at an S/C ratio of 3 than at an S/C of 4 with a reformer temperature of 700 °C and higher. Under the selected operating conditions of the fuel processor, the recycling of unreacted hydrogen from the anode off-gas (AOG) of the HT-PEMFC improved the overall efficiency of the combined fuel processor and HT-PEMFC by a factor of 1.28. The operating conditions where the AOG supplied more heat than was required for fuel processor operation were excluded. The high-efficiency operating conditions of the fuel cell system were proposed with the target of 5 kW of output as the capacity of the household HT-PEMFC.

The improvement of power transmission efficiency (PTE) is an important issue in the design of a wireless power transfer (WPT) system. The WPT system with multiple transmitting (Tx) or receiving (Rx) coils is a way to improve the PTE. This paper deals with the estimation of the mutual inductance angle for a two-dimensional (2D) WPT system with two Tx coils and one Rx coil. The mutual inductance angle is one of the most important parameters to determine the PTE in the 2D WPT system. The condition for the maximum PTE is investigated and the mutual inductance angle is defined for the 2D WPT system. An improved estimation method of the mutual inductance angle is proposed based on the phase-locked loop (PLL) technique using the voltages and currents of the Tx coils. The simulation and experimental results are provided to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.
