The presence of contaminants influences braking efficiency in the railway system because it alters the adhesion at the wheel–rail interface. It is essential to study this phenomenon, as contaminants reduce the friction between wheels and rails, which impacts braking and transport safety. In addition, these contaminants increase the risk of derailments. The objective of the research was to determine the impact of different contaminants and operating speeds on the critical braking system’s responses. Using the 3k full factorial experimental design methodology, with analysis of variance (ANOVA) and linear and quadratic regressions, visualized using surface graphs, the effects of three operating conditions were studied: clean rails, with sand and sawdust, and driving the train at three operating speeds. These conditions gave rise to variations in braking distances, maximum creep, wheel slip times, and maximum peaks of electric current when braking in each experiment. The tests were carried out on the straight section of a β-shaped track and a railway vehicle, designed at a scale of 1:20. The analysis reveals that the braking distance increases significantly with surface roughness (clean track < sawdust < sand). At 0.75 m/s, the sawdust track reduces braking distance by 21% compared with the clean track; at 1.00 m/s, the reduction is 19%; and at 1.30 m/s, it is 35%.

Breast cancer survivorship is a recognized risk factor for sexual dysfunction, with various clinical, sociocultural, and psychological factors potentially interacting differently across populations. This study compared sexual dysfunction, anxiety, and depression between females with breast cancer and those without, aiming to identify associated factors. A total of 362 females participated, including 227 with sexual dysfunction and 135 controls. Among them, 195 are breast cancer survivors, while 167 have no personal history of cancer. Key variables were analyzed using Student’s t-test for quantitative data and Fisher’s exact test for categorical data, while logistic regression models were used to assess the association between sexual dysfunction and various factors. Multivariate analysis revealed that, in sexually active females, breast cancer survivorship increased the odds of sexual dysfunction 2.7-fold (95% CI: 1.17–6.49; p = 0.020). Anxiety was significantly associated with sexual dysfunction, regardless of cancer status (AdOR 6.00; 95% CI: 2.50–14.43; p < 0.001). The interaction between cancer survival and anxiety further increased the odds of sexual dysfunction by more than 11-fold (AdOR 11.55; 95% CI: 3.81–35.04; p < 0.001). Additionally, obesity was found to be a protective factor among cancer survivors (AdOR 0.149; 95% CI: 0.027–0.819; p = 0.029). In conclusion, breast cancer has a significant impact on sexual function, with psychological factors like anxiety playing a crucial role. Addressing these issues requires a holistic, patient-centered approach that considers the complex interplay of physical, emotional, and sociocultural factors.

Panama has a large number of wild animal species, which could host a highly diverse amount of genetic variants of Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii). In this context, we highlight the importance of understanding the population structure of T. gondii in Panamanian wildlife and the genetic variants that can be rapidly transferred to domestic environments. This study analyzed the infection frequency and allelic composition of T. gondii in different tissue samples from wild animals. The infection frequency was measured by the PCR technique using the B1 gene as a molecular marker. The results showed a high frequency (65.6%) of infection in tissue samples collected from 221 wild animals. Stratified analyses for bird and mammal samples showed positivity rates of 67.2% and 70.12%, respectively, with no statistically significant differences. Infection frequency was also measured in five types of organs (brain, liver, heart, lung, and skeletal muscle), which showed homogeneous frequencies. The genetic diversity of the T. gondii population contained in the tissues of wild animals was analyzed by the Multilocus Polymerase Chain Reaction-Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) technique, using five genes called SAG1, SAG2, SAG3, GRA6, and Apico. This analysis revealed the presence of alleles of these genes corresponding to T. gondii lineages I, II, and III. Allele III was only identified with the Apico gene in a single reptile individual analyzed. Our findings indicated diverse allelic distribution at the analyzed loci, suggesting that the tissues were probably infected by non-archetypal individuals of T. gondii.

The main objectives of this study were to adapt the AUTODDIS scale to the cultural and social dimensions of Chile and to analyze its reliability and validity. The reliability and validity were assessed through a pilot study conducted with a population of students with intellectual disabilities (ID). The linguistic adaptation was executed according to expert judgments of each indicator: adequacy, coherence, relevance, and clarity. After the scale adaptation, a scale pilot was conducted to explore its technical properties. It was performed in a public school for students with ID. The validity coefficient result was 0.998, while the complete reliability result was α = 0.978. For the reliability subscales, the results were the following: autonomy α = 0.941, self-initiation α = 0.925, self-direction α = 0.970, self-regulation α = 0.804, and self-concept α = 0.935. The results confirm the AUTODDIS scale as a valid and reliable instrument to evaluate self-determination. However, it is necessary to apply this scale to a larger number of students with ID to generalize these results.

Helicobacter pylori is a human pathogen bacterium associated with gastritis, peptic ulcer, and gastric cancer. It can be identified through the 16S rRNA gene and characterized through cagA and vacA virulence genes. Clinical cultures of H. pylori were isolated and identified from human stomach biopsies. The isolates were characterized according to their colonial and microscopic morphology, and molecular genotyping was conducted to determine the bacterial virulence. A phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequencing was performed. In addition, multilocus sequence typing analysis was performed to determine the phylogeographic nature of the isolated strains. Three bacterial isolates were selected from 22 gastric biopsies, identified as H. pylori through colonial morphology, Gram staining, urease, catalase, and oxidase tests and identification of the ureC gene through end-point PCR. Amplification of 16S rRNA, urea, and tonB genes was performed, as well. Differences between the cagA and vacA genotypes were determined among the isolates. The phylogenetic analysis confirmed the identity of the three isolates as the specie Helicobacter pylori. Different genotypes were obtained for each H. pylori strain, and all the clinical isolates showed the vacA s2/m2 genotype, indicating an absence of the VacA cytotoxin. Only HCGDL-MR01 is a cagA gene carrier with a greater risk to develop a serious disease, such as stomach cancer and peptic ulcer. The multilocus sequence typing placed all the strains within the hpEurope population structure.

Sorghum is a plant that mainly requires chemical nitrogen fertilization. There are organic fertilizers that can provide nutrients to plants with great benefits to the soil, such as chicken manure. To determine the influence of organic fertilization on nitrate reductase (NR), glutamine synthetase (GS), and the amount of chlorophyll, sorghum plants were grown using the following four treatments: soil (T1), soil + chicken manure 100 kg ha−1 of nitrogen (N) (T2), soil + chicken manure 200 kg ha−1 N (T3), and soil + ammonium sulfate 100 kg ha−1 N (T4). Leaves were sampled in the vegetative stage (VS), the reproductive stage (RS), and the maturation stage (MS). The highest NR activity occurred in plants with T2 and T3 in the VS. The highest GS activity was in T3 and T4 in the RS. The amount of chlorophyll a was the same in all phenological stages. However, the amount of chlorophyll b was influenced by the type of fertilization at different phenological stages. Organic fertilizers (OF) produced the highest NR activity. On the other hand, GS activity was higher with chemical fertilization (T4), which was equal to the second dose of organic fertilization (T3). Finally, chlorophyll a and b were influenced by both types of fertilization, and was different from T1.

Basil is a highly valued aromatic plant worldwide, and drying is one of the best ways to preserve its leaves. Through a theoretical approach, the microwave drying of basil leaves can be modeled, and the effective diffusivity can be determined. However, using a model that considers moisture diffusion in the presence of intensive microwave energy is crucial. This study proposed a theoretical model to simulate the microwave drying of basil leaves in a thin layer. The model assumed that the material is homogeneous and isotropic, with the effective diffusivity depending on the microwave power. The model was solved numerically and validated with experimental data. The study also examined the effect of the microwave power on the color and bioactive properties during drying. The drying time was reduced by 60%, by increasing the microwave power from 199 W to 622 W. The effective diffusivity was found to be directly proportional to the microwave power. Drying at low powers was found to cause basil pigment degradation. However, drying at a power of 622 W resulted in better preservation of the leaves without browning. Finally, microwave drying negatively affects the bioactive compounds, as the phenolic content and antioxidant capacity in all the powers evaluated were significantly lower than in fresh basil leaves.

Background: Lymph node involvement (N+) in bladder cancer indicates a poor prognosis. Current preoperative evaluations of N+ are often inaccurate. We aimed to develop a predictive model for N+ using basic clinical variables and assess the diagnostic accuracy of Computed Tomography (CT). Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted. We include 62 MIBC patients who underwent radical cystectomy (RC) from 2010 to 2019 in our center. We evaluated diagnostic concordance between CT and histopathology for extravesical extension (T3a≥) and N+. Univariate and multivariate logistic regressions were used to create a predictive model, with an ROC curve and nomogram developed. Results: We found 59% sensitivity and 69% specificity for CT for staging cT3≥ and a sensitivity of 22% and a specificity of 21% for N+. NLR > 2.60 (OR 6.03, p = 0.02) and lymphovascular invasion (LVInv) in the TURB sample (OR 9.26, p = 0.04) were correlated with N+. Both fundus lesions (OR 0.21, p = 0.04) and creatinine > 0.94 mg/dL (OR 0.17, p = 0.025) were associated with reduced risk. The ROC curve of the model showed 80.4% AUC. Conclusions: A predictive model with good diagnostic performance for N+ can be developed from basic clinical data. CT sensitivity and specificity for the detection of N+ patients are limited.

COVID-19, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, is a highly pathogenic emerging infectious disease. Healthcare personnel (HCP) are presumably at higher risk of acquiring emerging infections because of occupational exposure. The prevalence of COVID-19 in HCP is unknown, particularly in low- to middle-income countries like El Salvador. The goal of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies among HCP in El Salvador just prior to vaccine rollout in March 2021. We evaluated 2176 participants from a nationally representative sample of national healthcare institutions. We found 40.4% (n = 880) of the study participants were seropositive for anti-spike protein antibodies. Significant factors associated with infection included younger age; living within the central, more populated zone of the country; living in a larger household (≥7 members); household members with COVID-19 or compatible symptoms; and those who worked in auxiliary services (i.e., housekeeping and food services). These findings provide insight into opportunities to mitigate SARS-CoV-2 risk and other emerging respiratory pathogens in HCP in El Salvador.

A general overview of Noise-Shaping Successive Approximation Register (SAR) analog-to-digital converters is provided, encompassing the fundamentals, operational principles, and key architectures of Noise-Shaping SAR (NS SAR). Key challenges, including inherent errors in processing circuits, are examined, along with current advancements in architecture design. Various issues, such as loop filter optimization, implementation methods, and DAC network element mismatches, are explored, along with considerations for voltage converter performance. The design of dynamic comparators is examined, highlighting their critical role in the SAR ADC architecture. Various architectures of dynamic comparators are extensively explored, including optimization techniques, performance considerations, and emerging trends. Finally, emerging trends and future challenges in the field are discussed.

The search for new plant growth regulators is a cornerstone of agricultural research; however, laboratory studies rarely go on to be evaluated in the field. This is because greater production is required, as well as longer studies. Particularly, brassinosteroids present these difficulties, and although they have been evaluated in crops with good results, their high production cost gives rise to the search for new alternatives. 22-Oxocholestanes such as SPGP4, previously used in silico and in vitro studies, have shown great potential, so their evaluation in crops grown from native seeds from the study region becomes of interest. Based on these data, SPGP4 was evaluated under crop conditions in three agricultural plots located on the Isthmus of Tehuantepec region, Oaxaca, México. The seeds were treated with a 0.5 mg/L aqueous solution of the 22-Oxocholestane compound SPGP4 by imbibition one night before sown. Later, 45 days after sowing, a solution of 0.5 mg/L at a rate of 200 L per hectare was applied. At the production level, the bean harvest showed an increase in the range of 21.0–38.1%, and the corn harvest increased between 22 and 32%. In addition, the latter also demonstrated an increase in biomass production, given the increase in diameter and height observed in the corn plant. This indicates that SPGP4 functions as a regulator of plant growth at the crop level to increase both seed and biomass production.

Industrial residues with high concentrations of hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)], characterized by an alkaline pH (between 9 and 13) and high salinity (around 100 psu), were used as a source for extremophilic chromium-resistant and -reducing microorganisms. An investigation of biodiversity through MiSeq showed the presence of 20 bacterial classes, with Bacilli (47%), Negativicutes (15%), Bacteriodia (8%), Gammaproteobacteria (7%) and Clostridia (5%) being the most abundant. The bioprospection allowed the cultivation of 87 heterotrophic bacterial colonies and 17 bacterial isolates at the end of the isolation, and screening procedures were obtained. The isolates were related to Cellulosimicrobium aquatile, C. funkei, Acinetobacter radioresistens, Staphylococcus equorum, S. epidermis, Brachybacterium paraconglometratum, Glutamicibacter creatinolyticus, Pseudomonas songnenensis, Microbacterium algeriense and Pantoea eucalypti, most of them being resistant to Cr(VI). Resistances of up to 400 mg.L−1 of chromate were obtained for four related strains (QReMLB55A, QRePRA55, QReMLB33A and QReMLB44C). The C. aquatile strain QReMLB55A and the P. songnenensis strain QReMLB33A were exposed to K2Cr2O7 (200 mg.L−1) under optimal conditions, diminishing 94% and 24% of the Cr(VI) in 6 days, respectively. These strains exhibited a high potential for chromium remediation biotechnologies.

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a water limitation in different ecotypes and one variety of Lotus corniculatus L. on the production of secondary metabolites and their antioxidant activity in response to a water deficit (WD) through other seasonal times. A randomized block experimental design with three replicates was used. Two levels of soil water content and five genotypes were arranged in a factorial way (2 × 5) with ten treatments for replication. The 255301 ecotype showed significantly higher (p ≤ 0.05) concentrations of total phenols, with a concentration of 86.6 mg Gallic Acid Equivalent (GAE)/gram of fresh weight (gFW); total flavonoids, with a concentration of 63.2 mg Quercetin Equivalent (QE)/gFW); total tannins (71.7 mg GAE/gFW); and radical scavenging activity, with an average of 200 mg Trolox Equivalent Antioxidant Capacity (TEAC)/gFW) in winter under a WD. The 255305 ecotype showed an increase in radical scavenging activity of 230 mg (TEAC)/gFW) and a total tannin concentration of 65.3 mg GAE/gFW in winter and spring, respectively, under a WD. The 255301 ecotype showed an increase in the concentration of total saponins (254.8 mg saponins/gFW) in summer under a WD. All these responses were triggered to mitigate a water deficit and extreme temperatures.

Agricultural soils account for about 60% of the global atmospheric emissions of the potent greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N2O). One of the main processes producing N2O is denitrification, which occurs under oxygen-limiting conditions when carbon is readily available. On grazed pastures, urine patches create ideal conditions for denitrification, especially in soils with high organic matter content, like Andisols. This lab study looks at the effects of Urine-urea-N load on the Andisol potential to emit N2O. For this, we investigated the effects of three levels of urea-N concentrations in cow urine on emissions of N2O, N2, and CO2 under controlled conditions optimised for denitrification to occur. Results show total N2O emissions increased with increasing urine-N concentration and indicate that denitrification was the main N2O-producing process during the first 2–3 days after urine application, though it was most likely soil native N rather than urine-N being utilised at this stage. An increase in soil nitrate indicates that a second peak of N2O emissions was most likely due to the nitrification of ammonium hydrolysed from the added urine, showing that nitrification and denitrification have the potential to play a big part in N losses and greenhouse gas production from these soils.

Groundwater, which is widely used in arid regions due to scarcity of surface sources, has excellent quality and, under certain conditions, can be consumed directly. Human activities have caused climate change, leading to decreased precipitation and increased temperatures, which reduces water recharge and increases underground extraction volume. To estimate the natural recharge of the Chupaderos aquifer, located in the State of Zacatecas, México, a spatiotemporal analysis methodology was used, using a soil moisture balance, which includes satellite information on precipitation and temperature, to obtain infiltration, evapotranspiration, and moisture. Using a Geographic Information System (GIS), a distributed spatial model was created in which the potential recharge areas that can be defined by raster images. The results show that there is a maximum annual recharge of 137 mm in the soil where Fluvisol and Kastanozem predominate, an indicator of a texture of sandy soil and franco-sandy area, which is mainly covered by forest and scrub. This result confirms that these characteristics are indispensable for the use of water in soil. Therefore, the preservation of the ecosystem is essential for aquifer recharge.

Background and Objectives: Uric acid (UA) and the markers of mineral bone metabolism and inflammation are commonly altered in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and are associated with the risk of cardiovascular complications and death. Studies point to a link between high serum UA and mineral bone homeostasis and inflammation, but controversy remains. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between UA levels and mineral bone metabolism and inflammation biomarkers in a sample of Mexican patients with CKD 3a–5. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study included 146 Mexican patients with CKD 3a–5. In addition, 25 healthy subjects were included in the study with the aim of generating reference data for comparisons. Metabolic parameters including UA serum concentrations, mineral bone metabolism (parathormone (PTH), fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23), calcium, and phosphate), and inflammation (interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α)) biomarkers were measured in all of the samples and compared as a function of the estimated glomerular function rate (eGFR) or UA levels. Results: Intact PTH, FGF23, and cytokines were higher in advanced CKD stages. Patients with hyperuricemia had significantly higher values of FGF23 and TNF-α compared with those without hyperuricemia. The eGFR was found to be significantly and negatively correlated with all markers. Uric acid was significantly correlated with phosphate, iPTH, FGF23, and TNF-α, whereas iPTH was significantly correlated with FGF23, TNF-α, and FGF23. Finally, a multivariate analysis confirmed the relationship of eGFR with all the tested biomarkers, as well as other relationships of iPTH with UA and TNF-α and of FGF23 with UA and TNF-α. Conclusions: This study supports the relationship between uric acid and levels of mineral bone metabolism and inflammation biomarkers in patients with CKD at middle to advanced stages. In the follow-up of patients with CKD, monitoring and controlling UA levels through nutritional or pharmacological interventions could help in the prevention of alterations related to mineral bone metabolism.

The significant environmental impact from fashion and textile industries has spurred interest in sustainable alternatives, especially for accessories like sequins and beads, whose usage has surged post-pandemic. This study explores the potential of utilizing salmon industry waste from Chile to produce bio-sequins (BS) and guanine crystals (GC) from salmon skin. The production of BS offers a strategy to reduce reliance on non-renewable resources and support sustainable waste management, as these materials decompose naturally without harmful residues. Physicochemical and mechanical characterization of the BS by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), evaluated their feasibility for textile, design, and fashion applications. Additionally, GC were extracted from salmon scales using less hazardous solvents such as acetone, ethanol, and acetic acid, and subsequently immobilized on the BS for decorative purposes. Notably, tensile mechanical properties of the BS improved up to 75% after guanine decoration and exposure to simulated environmental factors like UV radiation. This work addresses the dual challenge of pollution and resource depletion, demonstrating that BS from salmon skin offer an eco-friendly alternative. It underscores the importance of adopting sustainable practices throughout the fashion industry’s production chain.

The article presents an innovative approach for secure authentication in internet banking transactions, utilizing an Out-of-Band visual two-factor authorization protocol. With the increasing rise of cyber attacks and fraud, new security models are needed that ensure the integrity, authenticity, and confidentiality of financial transactions. The identified gap lies in the inability of traditional authentication methods, such as TANs and tokens, to provide security in untrusted terminals. The proposed solution is the Dynamic Authorization Protocol (DAP), which uses mobile devices to validate transactions through visual codes, such as QR codes. Each transaction is assigned a unique associated code, and the challenge must be responded to within 120 s. The customer initiates the transaction on a computer and independently validates it on their mobile device using an out-of-band channel to prevent attacks such as phishing and man-in-the-middle. The methodology involves implementing a prototype in Java ME for Android devices and a Java application server, creating a practical, low-computational-cost system, accessible for use across different operating systems and devices. The protocol was tested in real-world scenarios, focusing on ensuring transaction integrity and authenticity. The results show a successful implementation at Banco do Brasil, with 3.6 million active users, demonstrating the efficiency of the model over 12 years of use without significant vulnerabilities. The DAP protocol provides a robust and effective solution for securing banking transactions and can be extended to other authentication environments, such as payment terminals and point of sale devices.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted mental health and substance use patterns, particularly among young adults. Objective: This study aimed to assess changes in anxiety, depression, self-esteem, and substance use among university students in Mexico before, during, and after the pandemic. Methods: Using a repeated cross-sectional design, this study was conducted with university students in Mexico across three periods: pre-pandemic (2017 and 2019); during the pandemic (2021); and post-pandemic (2023). A total of 2167 students were interviewed during one of the three periods. Standardized scales measured anxiety, depression, self-esteem, Erotic Response and Sexual Orientation Scale (EROS), and substance use. Results: showed a marked and significant increase in the proportion of students with anxiety (40.0%, 71.7%, and 79.6%) and depression (14.4%, 61.9%, and 62.6%) during the pre-pandemic, pandemic, and post-pandemic periods, respectively. Self-esteem significantly decreased during and after the pandemic, compared to pre-pandemic, particularly among females. The proportion of students categorized as moderate/high-risk for their substance use changed over time, showing a reduction in alcohol use (from 29.9% to 20.2%) and tobacco use (from 26.0% to 18.2%) but an increase in sedative use (from 7.1% to 11.7%), before vs after the pandemic, respectively. Multivariate analysis revealed that anxiety, low self-esteem, and increased sedative use were consistently linked to a heightened risk of depression during and after the pandemic. Notably, anxiety and depression levels remained in a proportion significantly elevated even in the post-pandemic period. Conclusions: These findings underscore the enduring impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health of university students, highlighting the urgent need for targeted interventions, early detection strategies, and customized educational programs to effectively support students’ mental well-being in the ongoing post-pandemic era.

Background/Objectives: Aging leads to physiological changes influenced by lifestyle, environment, and genetics, increasing the risk of morbidity and mortality in older adults. COL1A1 gene encodes an essential protein in connective tissues, which is associated with musculoskeletal lesions. The interleukin-6 (IL-6) gene is a proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory regulator and has a greater predisposition to fractures and osteoporosis reported. In turn, these alterations are associated with a decrease in physical capacity, leading to a progressive loss of functionality and quality of life in older adults. Methods: A cross-sectional study was designed to identify the relationship between physical condition as determined using the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) and the predisposition parameters for muscle and joint injuries in a population of 422 older adults, active and of ≥60 years. The variables evaluated were sociodemographic data, SPPB evaluation, and COL1A1 and IL-6 gene DNA extracted by buccal scraping. Results: SPPB total score was significantly correlated with age −0.07, weight −0.02, waist circumference −0.02, and body mass index −0.05 (p < 0.005). Conclusions: Regarding genetic variables, there were no significant differences. However, lower SPPB values were observed in the GG genotype and GT of COL1A1 when compared to the CC genotype and GC of IL-6.

Background/Objectives: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major public health threat, which is exacerbated by the lack of new antibiotics and the emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) superbugs. Comprehensive efforts and alternative strategies to combat AMR are urgently needed to prevent social, medical, and economic consequences. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a pathogen responsible for a wide range of infections, from soft tissue infections to life-threatening conditions such as bacteremia and pneumonia. Bacteriophages have been considered as a potential therapeutic option to treat bacterial infections. Our aim was to isolate phages able to infect MDR P. aeruginosa strains. Methods: We isolated two lytic phages, using the conventional double layer agar technique (DLA), from samples obtained from the influent of a wastewater treatment plant in Concepción, Chile. The phages, designated as PaCCP1 and PaCCP2, were observed by electron microscopy and their host range was determined against multiple P. aeruginosa strains using DLA. Moreover, their genomes were sequenced and analyzed. Results: Phage PaCCP1 is a member of the Septimatrevirus genus and phage PaCCP2 is a member of the Pbunavirus genus. Both phages are tailed and contain dsDNA. The genome of PaCCP1 is 43,176 bp in length with a GC content of 54.4%, encoding 59 ORFs, one of them being a tRNA gene. The genome of PaCCP2 is 66,333 bp in length with a GC content of 55.6%, encoding 102 non-tRNA ORFs. PaCCP1 is capable of infecting five strains of P. aeruginosa, whereas phage PaCCP2 is capable of infecting three strains of P. aeruginosa. Both phages do not contain bacterial virulence or AMR genes and contain three and six putative Anti-CRISPR proteins. Conclusions: Phages PaCCP1 and PaCCP2 show promise as effective treatments for MDR P. aeruginosa strains, offering a potential strategy for controlling this clinically important pathogen through phage therapy.

This paper presents an isolated DC-DC converter with high voltage gain that features an advanced inter-built nanocrystalline-core medium-frequency transformer (NC-MFT). The isolated DC-DC converter with an NC-MFT is specifically designed for applications such as interconnect photovoltaic (PV) systems, DC microgrids, DC loads, and DC buses, where voltage gain is one of the essential issues to consider. The NC-MFT inside the DC-DC converter is designed with a new approach that not only provides isolation but also contributes to achieving high efficiency and a higher step-up ratio. The high efficiency of the converters contributes to the integration of PV systems into DC microgrids. The converter yields a high voltage conversion ratio of 16.17. The experimental results obtained at 41.8 V/676 V and 275 W for the prototype revealed high efficiency (95.63% at full load). The experimental results validate the theoretical analysis and simulation, confirming that the converter achieves the main objective of high voltage conversion and high efficiency. These results will contribute to the interest in the use of this type of energy and its impact on the reduction in CO2 emissions.

Objectives: This study investigated the dynamics of porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) and PCV3 on a commercial farm following PCV2 vaccination. Methods: Serum samples from 35 pigs, starting at 3 weeks of age, were collected weekly until 21 weeks of age. Oral fluids from six pens of pigs of the same age were also analyzed. Viral DNA was assessed in pooled sera and individual oral fluid samples, while antibodies (IgG and IgA) were measured in the serum and oral fluids. Productive parameters, including weekly mortality and cumulative mortality, were evaluated. Results: The results revealed that PCV2 and PCV3 co-infection was detected in pigs at 8 weeks of age, with PCV3 being detected in oral fluids two weeks earlier. PCV3 DNA was detected in oral fluids at 4 weeks of age. PCV2 IgG antibodies in the serum increased gradually after vaccination, peaking at 7 weeks of age, then declined and stabilized until 21 weeks of age. PCV3 IgG antibodies fluctuated early but were uniformly positive after 13 weeks of age. In oral fluids, PCV2 IgG and IgA antibodies showed a strong response only at 3 and 23 weeks of age. In contrast, a strong and consistent IgG response was observed in oral fluids in the absence of PCV2 and PCV3 co-infection of pigs at 3 to 11 weeks of age. The farm’s productive parameters remained stable throughout the study. Conclusions: These findings suggest that PCV2 and PCV3 co-infection, along with high PCV3 detection levels in serum and oral fluids, may have an impact on the efficacy of PCV2 vaccination.

In response to the growing demand for potable water, this study presents a practical methodology for designing and fabricating a hybrid desalination system that integrates reverse electrodialysis and electrodialysis using 3D-printing technology. The hybrid system combines the energy generation potential of RED with the salt removal capabilities of ED, reducing energy consumption. Customized reactors were designed to enhance flow distribution and ion exchange, with computational fluid dynamics simulations validating the hydrodynamic performance. The reactors were fabricated using 3D printing, allowing rapid, cost-effective production, with functional reactors constructed in under 24 h. The system achieved a 15% reduction in salt concentration within one hour, with a specific energy consumption of 0.1388 Wh/m3 and a water recovery rate of 50%. These results demonstrate the functionality of the RED-ED hybrid system for achieving energy savings and performing water desalination. This methodology provides a scalable and replicable solution for water treatment applications, especially in regions with abundant salinity gradients and limited freshwater resources, while offering a multidisciplinary approach that integrates physicochemical and engineering principles for effective device development.

Goat meat has a high nutritional value, since it contains up to 29% protein, as well as iron, potassium and vitamin B12. To prolong the shelf life of this food, a drying process can be applied; however, there is scarce information on the kinetics and drying parameters for this food material. The objective of this work was to characterize the thermal drying process of goat meat, through the mathematical modeling of convective drying kinetics, and its validation with experimental data obtained in a drying tunnel. The experiments were carried out with samples of loin (Longissumus dorsi) of Boer goat meat from the Mixteca region of Oaxaca (Mexico). Meat samples were subjected to air convection drying at 40, 50, 60 and 70 °C (with temperature oscillation), with air velocities of 1 and 2 m/s. Drying kinetics, air and meat temperature profiles, relative humidity and air flow velocity were recorded. Four models were analyzed: two-term, Midilli’s model, Wang and Singh’s model and a heuristic model with temperature dependence. The proposed mathematical models represented drying kinetics with an accurate fitting of experimental data, with standard errors (RMSE) in the range of 0.004–0.029. The estimated diffusion coefficients are consistent with the transport properties in biomaterials. The heuristic model was based on the solution of the effective diffusion equation considering the linearization of the temperature-dependent diffusion coefficient, showing a standard error in the range of 0.007–0.028, satisfactorily representing the temperature oscillations that allows a moisture diffusion reorganization, mainly when drastic temperature changes occur.

Stem cell therapy in dogs has increased considerably in recent years; however, there are few publications on the treatment of perianal fistulas (PF) in this species. The aim of this open-label clinical trial was to demonstrate the efficacy and safety of a new protocol for the in situ administration of low-dose adipose-derived allogeneic stem cells (ASCs) for the treatment of refractory spontaneous perianal fistula. The methodology consisted of applying one to three doses of 5 × 106 cryopreserved allogeneic ASCs to each fistula. The study was performed in 14 dogs regardless of sex, breed, or age, with a clinical diagnosis of refractory PF. Cells diluted in phosphate-buffered saline were applied to five sites of the PF in an amount of 1 × 106 per application site. Efficacy was determined by the complete closure of the fistula, which was observed in 100% of the cases studied one month after therapy, with a subsequent follow-up of 12 to 48 months after therapy. Furthermore, safety was demonstrated by the absence of local or systemic adverse effects. In conclusion, the protocol used in this work demonstrates the efficacy without adverse effects of the in situ application of low doses of allogeneic ASCs, providing a simple, non-invasive, long-lasting and low-cost therapeutic option.

Chronic viral inflammation is associated with oxidative stress and changes in gut microbiota. The Mediterranean diet (MD), with recognized anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, modulates gut microorganisms, specifically on the interaction between extra virgin olive oil, a key component of the MD with well-documented antioxidant effects. This study investigated the influence of adherence to MD and antioxidant-rich foods (extra virgin olive oil) on biochemical, inflammatory, and microbiota profiles in patients with chronic inflammation defined as a prolonged inflammatory response due to immune dysregulation following the acute phase of the viral infection. Participants were classified into low (n = 54) and high (n = 134) MD adherence groups (cut-off of 7 points based on previous studies utilizing the same threshold in the assessment of MD adherence). Gut microbiota was sequenced using the 16S technique, and the adherence to MD was assessed using a validated questionnaire for a Spanish population. High adherence to the MD was linked to significant improvements in inflammatory and oxidative stress markers, including reductions in LDL-cholesterol, glucose, and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels, an indicative of redox balance, as well as a significant higher consumption of antioxidant foods. Moreover, gut microbiota analysis revealed distinct compositional shifts and a lower abundance of the Oscillibacter genus in the high adherence group. Notably, a significant interaction was observed between MD adherence and extra virgin olive oil consumption, with Oscillibacter abundance influencing LDH levels, suggesting that the MD antioxidant properties may modulate inflammation through gut microbiota-mediated mechanisms. These findings provide new evidence that adherence to the Mediterranean diet can reduce inflammatory markers in patients with long-COVID-19, a population that has not been extensively studied, while also highlighting the potential role of the bacterial genus Oscillibacter in modulating this effect.

In heart failure (HF) patients undergoing cardiac surgery, an increased activity of mechanisms related to cardiac remodeling may determine a higher risk of postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF). Given that atrial fibrillation (AF) has a negative impact on the course and management of HF, including the need for anticoagulation therapy, identifying the factors associated with AF occurrence after cardiac surgery is crucial for the prognosis of these patients. POAF is thought to occur when various clinical and biochemical triggers act on susceptible cardiac tissue (first hit), with oxidative stress and inflammation during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) surgery being potential contributing factors (second hit). However, the molecular mechanisms involved in these processes remain poorly characterized. Recent research has shown that patients who later develop POAF often have pre-existing abnormalities in calcium handling and activation of NLRP3-inflammasome signaling in their atrial cardiomyocytes. These molecular changes may make cardiomyocytes more susceptible to spontaneous Ca2+-releases and subsequent arrhythmias, particularly when exposed to inflammatory mediators. Additionally, some clinical studies have linked POAF with elevated preoperative inflammatory markers, but there is a need for further research in order to better understand the impact of CPB surgery on local and systemic inflammation. This knowledge would make it possible to determine whether patients susceptible to POAF have pre-existing inflammatory conditions or cellular electrophysiological factors that make them more prone to developing AF and cardiac remodeling. In this context, the NLRP3 inflammasome, expressed in cardiomyocytes and cardiac fibroblasts, has been identified as playing a key role in the development of HF and AF, making patients with pre-existing HF with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) the focus of several clinical studies with interventions that act at this level. On the other hand, HFpEF has been linked to metabolic and non-ischemic risk factors, but more research is needed to better characterize the myocardial remodeling events associated with HFpEF. Therefore, since ventricular remodeling may differ between HFrEF and HFpEF, it is necessary to perform studies in both groups of patients due to their pathophysiological variations. Clinical evidence has shown that pharmacological therapies that are effective for HFrEF may not provide the same anti-remodeling benefits in HFpEF patients, particularly compared to traditional adrenergic and renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system inhibitors. On the other hand, there is growing interest in medications with pleiotropic or antioxidant/anti-inflammatory effects, such as sodium–glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT-2is). These drugs may offer anti-remodeling effects in both HFrEF and HFpEF by inhibiting pro-inflammatory, pro-oxidant, and NLRP3 signaling pathways and their mediators. The anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-remodeling effects of SGLT-2 i have progressively expanded from HFrEF and HFpEF to other forms of cardiac remodeling. However, these advances in research have not yet encompassed POAF despite its associations with inflammation, oxidative stress, and remodeling. Currently, the direct or indirect effects of NLRP3-dependent pathway inhibition on the occurrence of POAF have not been clinically assessed. However, given that NLRP3 pathway inhibition may also indirectly affect other pathways, such as inhibition of NF-kappaB or inhibition of matrix synthesis, which are strongly linked to POAF and cardiac remodeling, it is reasonable to hypothesize that this type of intervention could play a role in preventing these events.

High-grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSOC) is the most lethal form of gynecologic cancer, with limited treatment options and a poor prognosis. Epigenetic factors, such as microRNAs (miRNAs) and DNA methylation, play pivotal roles in cancer progression, yet their specific contributions to HGSOC remain insufficiently understood. In this study, we performed comprehensive high-throughput analyses to identify dysregulated miRNAs in HGSOC and investigate their epigenetic regulation. Analysis of tissue samples from advanced-stage HGSOC patients revealed 20 differentially expressed miRNAs, 11 of which were corroborated via RT-qPCR in patient samples and cancer cell lines. Among these, miR-145-3p was consistently downregulated post-neoadjuvant therapy and was able to distinguish tumoural from control tissues. Further investigation confirmed that DNA methylation controls MIR145 expression. Functional assays showed that overexpression of miR-145-3p significantly reduced cell migration and induced G0/G1 cell cycle arrest by modulating the cyclin D1-CDK4/6 pathway. These findings suggest that miR-145-3p downregulation enhances cell proliferation and motility in HGSOC, implicating its restoration as a potential therapeutic target focused on G1/S phase regulation in the treatment of HGSOC.

Rail accidents have decreased in recent years, although not significantly if measured by train accidents recorded in the last six years. Therefore, it is essential to identify weaknesses in the implementation of security and prevention systems. This research aims to study the trend and classification of railway accidents, as well as analyze public databases. Using the business management method of benchmarking, descriptive statistics, and a novel approach to the Ishikawa diagram, this study demonstrates best practices and strategies to reduce accidents. Unlike previous studies, this research specifically examines public databases and provides a framework for developing the standardization of railway accident causes and recommendations. The main conclusion is that the proposed classification of railway accident causes, and its associated database, ensures that agencies, researchers, and the government have accessible, easily linkable, and usable data references to enhance their analysis and support the continued reduction of accidents.

Background: β-carotene is an essential antioxidant, providing protection against type 2 diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular illnesses, obesity, and metabolic syndrome. This study investigates the impact of β-carotene on biochemical parameters and pancreatic insulin expression in mice exposed to ethanol. Methods: Thirty-six C57BL/6 mice (Mus musculus) were divided into six groups: 1. C (control), 2. LA (3% alcohol dose), 3. MA (7% alcohol dose), 4. B (0.52 mg/kg body weight/day β-carotene), 5. LA+B (3% alcohol dose + 0.52 mg/kg body weight/day β-carotene), and 6. MA+B (7% alcohol dose plus 0.52 mg/kg body weight/day β-carotene). After 28 days, the animals were euthanized for serum and pancreatic tissue collection. Biochemical analysis and pancreatic insulin expression were performed. One-way ANOVA was used. Results: The B, LA+B, and MA+B groups improved insulin levels and decreased HOMA-β versus the C group, with the LA+B and MA+B groups also showing lower ADH and ALDH levels than their nonsupplemented counterparts (p < 0.05). The B, LA+B, and MA+B groups showed a greater β-cell mass area compared to the unsupplemented groups. Additionally, the LA+B and MA+B groups demonstrated significantly increased β-cell area and integrated optical density compared to the LA and MA groups, respectively (p < 0.001). Conclusions: In mice, β-cell loss led to increased glucose release due to decreased insulin levels. β-carotene appeared to mitigate ethanol’s impact on these cells, resulting in reduced insulin degradation when integrated optical density was used. These findings suggest that antioxidant supplementation may be beneficial in treating ethanol-induced type 2 diabetes in animal models.

Essential oils (EOs) are mixtures of volatile organic compounds that mediate plant interactions and are also appreciated for their biological properties in aromatic plants. However, the study of EOs in wild plants with biological activity has been neglected. Ipomoea murucoides is a wild species with allelopathic and insecticide activities; however, the climate factors associated with EOs and their role in intra- and interspecific interactions are still unknown. We investigated the effects of temperature, rain, and solar irradiance for two years on the EOs of I. murucoides and documented the effect of herbivory (without, 20%, and mechanical damage) on their composition. We evaluated the receptivity to possible infochemicals in conspecific and congeneric neighbors to I. murucoides plants exposed to methyl jasmonate (MeJA), herbivory by Ogdoecosta biannularis and without an elicitor. We measured the stomatal density and aperture in the second leaf generation of the neighbor plants. The year and herbivory >20% affected the composition of EOs. Nerolidol could be a biological marker for herbivory. We concluded that herbivory and rain irregularity contribute to EOs changing. The response in the stomatal density in plants not consumed by I. pauciflora but near I. murucoides under MeJA or herbivory gives evidence of interspecific plant–plant communication.

Agave salmiana Otto ex Salm-Dyck is an endemic Mexican plant distributed from 1230 to 2460 m above sea level, native to the arid zones of central and southern Mexico. It is a traditionally used species, with morphotypes ranging from wild to cultivated, with an ample cultural and management history. The species is important because it generates employment, and its products are used for self-consumption and are marketed as raw materials; however, little is known about its leaf anatomical description or studies that report the variation in its characters in terms of its level of management and its altitudinal gradient. To address this, we collected leaf samples from three localities of the Teotihuacan region in the State of Mexico (Mexico) and obtained anatomical leaf sections; with these, we also obtained thirty-eight parameters to quantitatively describe leaf anatomy. Thus, in this study, the general anatomical description of the leaf of Agave salmiana subsp. salmiana is presented. Unique leaf characters and others shared with the species of the genus were identified for the leaf of A. salmiana subsp. salmiana. In addition, significant variation was observed when comparing the three sampled localities (78.95%). From the analysis of anatomical characters, abaxial outer periclinal wall length, length of adaxial palisade parenchyma cells, fiber length, surface area of abaxial epidermal cells, width of abaxial palisade parenchyma cells, and total length of parenchyma in adaxial palisade were found to distinguish individuals from the three localities analyzed and the differences are related to management and altitude gradients.

This study focuses on determining the correlation between digital competencies and academic self-efficacy of students in universities in the Selva Central (Central Jungle) region of Peru to establish the significance of these factors in academic achievement. This study employs a quantitative, hypothesis-testing design and is both fundamental and co-relational in nature; 84 students from Universidad de la Selva Central were selected. Validated questionnaires were used to gather data on the participants’ DCs including information literacy, communication, content creation, security, and problem-solving skills, as well as the academic self-efficacy of the participants, with all having reliability scores of 0.823 and 0.895, respectively, for the Spearman correlation coefficient. By using statistical analysis, it was established that there is a stronger positive relationship between academic self-efficacy and every dimension of the digital competencies; this was particularly the case with communication and collaboration, rho = 0.853, and digital content creation, rho = 0.863. As such, there is evidence that increasing digital literacy may help improve the learners’ self-confidence in achieving academic success and address the problem of early school leaving, as well as improve competitiveness in the European Union labor market. This study suggests that appropriate curricula and/or workshops to strengthen these effectiveness- and efficiency-related competencies be disseminated to education stakeholders and the findings published in relevant outlets. This research therefore fits within the larger body of literature on the inclusion of digital literacy within tertiary education, information science, and technology.

The Neotropical deer genus Mazama is characterized by homoplastic morphological characters, a high karyotypic diversity, and a polyphyletic condition. The species of the genus have been recovered into two multigeneric lineages, the subtribes Odocoileina and Blastocerina, of the tribe Odocoileini (New World deer) in the family Cervidae. Within the Blastocerina, gray brockets include two non-sister species, Subulo gouazoubira, occurring south of the Amazon region, and Passalites nemorivagus, occurring in the Guianas and in the Amazon region. We clarify the taxonomic status and phylogenetic position of Mazama americana citus Osgood, 1912 (referred to as either S. gouazoubira or P. nemorivagus by other authors). We collected a topotype of M. a. citus from the eastern shore of Lake Maracaibo, Venezuela, characterize it morphologically and cytogenetically (conventional banding and fluorescence in situ hybridization), and carry out a phylogenetic analysis of its whole mitogenome and Cytb alongside two additional specimens of M. a. citus from northwestern Venezuela. Our analyses reveal the topotype to be a large gray brocket with a cinnamon band above the eyes and 2n = 61 and FN = 70 karyotype. Using cattle whole chromosome painting and bacterial artificial chromosome X probes, we determined its karyotype to differ in at least 10 rearrangements from that of S. gouazoubira. Bayesian inference recovers M. a. citus within the Blastocerina subtribe, separated phylogenetically from other gray brockets (100% branch value), revealing the Osgood’s gray brocket to be a valid species that should be assigned to a new genus. We propose the generic name Bisbalus, with Bisbalus citus (Osgood, 1912) as the type species.

Ginkgo biloba (GB) extracts have been used in clinical studies as an alternative therapy for Alzheimer’s disease (AD), but the exact bioaction mechanism has not yet been elucidated. In this work, an in silico study on GB metabolites was carried out using SwissTargetPrediction to determine the proteins associated with AD. The resulting proteins, AChE, MAO-A, MAO-B, β-secretase and γ-secretase, were studied by molecular docking, resulting in the finding that kaempferol, quercetin, and luteolin have multitarget potential against AD. These compounds also exhibit antioxidant activity towards reactive oxygen species (ROS), so antioxidant tests were performed on the extracts using the DPPH and ABTS techniques. The ethanol and ethyl acetate GB extracts showed an important inhibition percentage, higher than 80%, at a dose of 0.01 mg/mL. The effect of GB extracts on AD resulted in multitarget action through two pathways: firstly, inhibiting enzymes responsible for degrading neurotransmitters and forming amyloid plaques; secondly, decreasing ROS in the central nervous system (CNS), reducing its deterioration, and promoting the formation of amyloid plaques. The results of this work demonstrate the great potential of GB as a medicinal plant.

Background: This case report describes the clinical management of a traumatic palatal ulcer, a complication associated with mini-implant-assisted rapid maxillary expansion (MARPE). Case Report: A 13-year-old female patient with maxillary constriction underwent MARPE treatment using a custom acrylic expander anchored by four mini-implants. Despite proper planning and device design, the patient missed her first follow-up appointment and continued activations, resulting in tissue inflammation and embedding of the device. Upon examination, swelling and displacement of the cement were observed, necessitating device removal. The traumatic ulcer was treated with chlorhexidine gel, paracetamol, and a soft diet. Complete recovery was achieved within one month. A second expander was then designed and installed, with more frequent monitoring and improved hygiene protocols. This approach led to successful expansion without complications. This case highlights the importance of precise treatment planning, proper mini-implant selection, and regular follow-ups in MARPE therapy. It also emphasizes the need for patient compliance and effective hygiene measures to prevent complications. Conclusions: The successful management of the traumatic ulcer demonstrates that prompt action and consideration of cost-effective treatment options can lead to positive outcomes in addressing MARPE-related complications.

Background/Objectives: Oreganum vulgare essential oil (OEO) is safe, effective, multifunctional, and widely used. This study aimed to evaluate OEO’s chemical composition and antimicrobial activity in vitro against S. aureus and E. coli. Methods: The composition of OEO was determined by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Results: Compounds included monoterpenes with known antimicrobial activity, such as 2-menthen-1-ol (36.33%), linalyl acetate (9.26%), terpinene-4-ol (9.01%), 4-thujanol (6.33%), menthen (5.81%), sabinene (5.18%), and carvacrol methyl ether (5.14%). Conclusions: OEO had a strong antimicrobial activity with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 1.90 mg/mL for S. aureus and 0.49 mg/mL for E. coli after 18 h incubation. The minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) was 7.9 mg/mL against S. aureus and 0.99 mg/mL against E. coli. Thus, OEO could be used as a natural antimicrobial against S. aureus and E. coli infections.

Background: Interferons (IFNs) are cytokines involved in the immune response with a synergistic regulatory effect on the immune response. They are therapeutics for various viral and proliferative conditions, with proven safety and efficacy. Their clinical application is challenging due to the molecules’ size, degradation, and pharmacokinetics. We are working on new drug delivery systems that provide adequate therapeutic concentrations for these cytokines and prolong their half-life in the circulation, such as nanoformulations. Methods: Through nanoencapsulation using electrospray technology and biocompatible and biodegradable polymers, we are developing a controlled release system based on nanoparticles for viral infections of the respiratory tract. Results: We developed a controlled release system for viral respiratory tract infections. A prototype nanoparticle with a core was created, which hydrolyzed the polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) shell , releasing the active ingredients interferon-alpha (IFN-α) and interferon-gamma (IFN-γ). The chitosan (QS) core degraded slowly, with a controlled release of IFN-α. The primary and rapid effect of the interferon combination ensured an antiviral and immunoregulatory response from day one, induced by IFN-α and enhanced by IFN-γ. The multilayer design demonstrated an optimal toxicity profile. Conclusions: This formulation is an inhaled dry powder intended for the non-invasive intranasal route. The product does not require a cold chain and has the potential for self-administration in the face of emerging viral infections. This novel drug has applications in multiple infectious, oncological, and autoimmune conditions, and further development is proposed for its therapeutic potential. This prototype would ensure greater bioavailability, controlled release, fewer adverse effects, and robust biological action through the simultaneous action of both molecules.

A low-fermentable oligo-, di-, monosaccharide and polyol (low-FODMAP) diet for patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) should include an adequate fiber source. Our aim was to formulate orange cookies using maize flour and type-4 resistant starch (RS4) from maize and to evaluate their properties and sensorial attributes by IBS patients. We prepared two formulations: 37.7% RS4 and 14.7% maize flour and a control with normal maize starch (MS) instead of RS4. We added orange juice and zest instead of water and evaluated their properties. The viscosity, water absorption capacity, and solubility were lower for RS4 than for MS. The width, thickness, L* and a* values of both cookies were comparable (p > 0.05), although RS4-C had a decreased b* value and higher hardness (90.6 vs. 80.1 N). The nutrient content was similar between RS4-C and MS-C, but the glycemic index of RS4-C was 63 compared to 95 of MS-C. According to IBS patients, the appearance, taste, hardness, overall quality, and perception of healthiness and nutritional value of both types of cookies were similarly high (p > 0.05). Panelists recommend the cookies. Therefore, RS4 cookies could be further investigated for their ability to improve bowel habits and re-equilibrate the microbiota of IBS patients.

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogels have a wide range of applications in the pharmaceutical and biomedicine fields due to their exceptional biophysical properties. The study focuses on preparing and characterizing capsule-shaped PVA hydrogels to enhance their biocompatibility and porosity for controlled glucose release and cell proliferation. The hydrogels were prepared using different concentrations (Cs) and molecular weights (MWs) of PVA, with two different lengths, A (10 mm) and B (20 mm), to control glucose release over 60 min. The preparation process involved PVA gel preparation and PVA hydrogel formation. A total of 500 µL of glucose was injected into all dehydrated hydrogels in groups A and B. Glucose release was studied by immersing the hydrogels in saline at 37 °C with stirring at 500 rpm. The SUP-B15 cell line was grown in six A1 hydrogels for biocompatibility testing. The results indicate that all hydrogels remained stable at 37 °C without degrading. Those with a higher C and MW exhibited a denser and less porous structure, lower glucose storage capacity, and higher elongation at break. Significant differences in glucose release, diffusion speed, and flux were observed, which were more evident in A1 > A4, B1 > B4, and B1 > A1 over 60 min. A1 and B1 had higher values because their higher porosity distribution allowed glucose to diffuse more easily. B1, being larger, has more glucose due to its increased length. The cell growth response and viability at 48 h in contact with the hydrogels was similar to that of the control (4.5 × 105 cells/mL, 98.5% vs. 4.8 × 105 cells/mL, 99.7% viability), thus demonstrating biocompatibility. The hydrogels effectively released glucose over 60 min, with variations based on porosity, C, MW, and length, and demonstrated good biocompatibility with the cell line.

Eye disorders affect a substantial portion of the global population, yet the availability of efficacious ophthalmic drug products remains limited. This can be partly ascribed to a number of factors: (1) inadequate understanding of physiological barriers, treatment strategies, drug and polymer properties, and delivery systems; (2) challenges in effectively delivering drugs to the anterior and posterior segments of the eye due to anatomical and physiological constraints; and (3) manufacturing and regulatory hurdles in ocular drug product development. The present review discusses innovative ocular delivery and treatments, encompassing implants, liposomes, nanoparticles, nanomicelles, microparticles, iontophoresis, in situ gels, contact lenses, microneedles, hydrogels, bispecific antibodies, and gene delivery strategies. Furthermore, this review also introduces advanced manufacturing technologies such as 3D printing and hot-melt extrusion (HME), aimed at improving bioavailability, reducing therapeutic dosages and side effects, facilitating the design of personalized ophthalmic dosage forms, as well as enhancing patient compliance. This comprehensive review lastly offers insights into digital healthcare, market trends, and industry and regulatory perspectives pertaining to ocular product development.

Color shift keying is a modulation scheme for visible light communication that uses fixtures with three or more narrow-spectral light-emitting diodes to transmit data while fulfilling the primary function of illumination. When this modulation is used indoors, the reflectivity of the walls strongly affects the inter-channel interference and illumination quality. In this paper we present an indoor channel model that takes into account multi-wavelength propagation. This model is available as an open-source Python package. The model calculates the inter-channel interference, illuminance, correlated color temperature, and color rendering index at the receiver position. The Python package includes a module for estimating the symbol error rate. To validate the model, we computed the received power at each color photodetector for four different indoor scenarios. The model demonstrated a color rendering index of less than 15 when using IEEE-based color shift keying and non-uniform illumination on a horizontal plane. The simulation determined the required luminous flux to achieve a symbol error rate of less than 10−5 when the photodetector is at the center of the indoor space and vertically below the light source. To maintain a symbol error rate less than 10−5, the luminous flux increases when the photodetector is displaced in a diagonal direction from the center of the plane.

This research aims at investigating factors affecting entrepreneurial intention among university students in Selva Central-Peru. The study seeks to explore how perceptions of behavioural and social norms, as well as entrepreneurs’ self-efficacy, impact entrepreneurial intentions among students. The research method used is a quantitative one, which in turn praises data obtained through questionnaires applied to 114 active students and analysed by statistical methods. Confirmed the positive influences of self-efficacy on entrepreneurial intention are six times larger than those of attitude and subjective norms, with 79.2% explained variance, respectively, in relation to the proposal model’s findings. Results showed that although the majority of students demonstrated medium to high entrepreneurship intentions, much scope remains for increasing this. These findings confirm just how critical it is to provide an educational context that supports entrepreneurial locus of control-building and, in so doing, draws on broader conversation within the education-occupational landscape. With this, the study highlights avenues to better leverage entrepreneurship as a pathway toward sustainable livelihoods and economic inclusion in an economically divided region.

Elevating Indigenous leadership in conservation science is critical for social and ecological wellbeing. However, Indigenous knowledges are frequently undermined by persistent colonial research standards. In response, calls to implement ethical guidelines that advance Indigenous research and data governance are mounting. Despite this growing movement, most environmental studies continue to follow largely colonial, extractive models, presenting a widening gap between ethical guidelines and practical applications across diverse research contexts. To address this gap, our study aims to design and evaluate a wildlife conservation research project based on the Relational Science Model, which outlines guidance for improving research relations with Indigenous Peoples. To achieve this aim, we conducted a post-survey to evaluate the project from the perspectives of the intended beneficiaries of La Bendición in southwestern Guatemala, accompanied by researcher reflections and observations. The results revealed strong agreement between community research partner experience and Relational Science Model outcomes, including relevant and innovative knowledge generation, alongside improved trust in research collaborations. Respondents also outlined several areas of improvement, including a desire for more diverse community engagement, particularly regarding youth. Overall, this study outlines pathways and recommendations for researchers, institutions, and agencies to improve relational accountability in conservation science practice, supporting Indigenous conservation governance and environmental justice.

Bluetongue virus (BTV) is a prevalent midge-borne pathogen that infects ruminant species worldwide. BTV infections range from asymptomatic to lethal, with mechanisms that determine the severity of infection remaining largely undefined. Although it is relatively poorly understood, the immune response to BTV infection is thought to be critical for both the propagation of disease as well as the resolution of infection. To bridge this gap in knowledge, we infected cohorts of sheep and muntjac deer with two serotypes of BTV (BTV10 and BTV17) for longitudinal analysis (30 days). Interestingly, species-specific differences were observed. Circulating virus was detected early and remained detectable for the duration of the sheep study, while infections in muntjac showed faltering detection of BTV10 at 3 weeks post infection. The magnitude of the immune response was subdued in the muntjac when compared to the sheep cohorts, though similar responses were observed. We also assessed midge viral uptake and the ability to replicate BTV. Midges successfully fed on both species, yet those that fed on sheep resulted in more efficient BTV transmission. Our findings demonstrate that differences in BTV infections, immune responses, and vector competence across host species and serotypes will impact global BTV emergence and strategies for mitigation.

SARS-CoV-2 antibody kinetics based on immunologic history is not fully understood. We analyzed anti-spike and anti-nucleocapsid antibody responses following acute infection in a cohort of Indigenous persons. The models of peak concentrations and decay rates estimated that one year after infection, participants would serorevert for anti-nucleocapsid antibodies and remain seropositive for anti-spike antibodies. The peak anti-spike concentrations were higher for individuals vaccinated prior to infection, but the decay rates were similar across immunologic status groups. Children had significantly lower peak anti-spike concentrations than adults. This study affirms the importance of continued vaccination to maintain high levels of immunity in the face of waning immunity.

Thermal analysis is widely employed for the characterization of nanomaterials. It encompasses a variety of techniques that allow the evaluation of the physicochemical properties of a material by monitoring its response under controlled temperature. In the case of carbon nanomaterials, such as carbon nanotubes and graphene derivatives, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) is particularly useful to determine the quality and stability of the sample, the presence of impurities and the degree of functionalization or doping after post-synthesis treatments. Furthermore, TGA is widely used to evaluate the thermal stability against oxidation by air, which can be, for instance, enhanced by the purification of the material and by nitrogen doping, finding application in areas where a retarded combustion of the material is required. Herein, we have evaluated key parameters that play a role in the data obtained from TGA, namely, gas flow rate, sample weight and temperature rate, used during the analysis. We found out that the heating rate played the major role in the process of combustion in the presence of air, inducing an increase in the temperature at which the oxidation of CNTs starts to occur, up to ca. 100 °C (from 1 °C min−1 to 50 °C min−1). The same trend was observed for all the evaluated systems, namely N-doped CNTs, graphene produced by mechanical exfoliation and N-doped reduced graphene samples. Other aspects, like the presence of impurities or structural defects in the evaluated samples, were analyzed by TGA, highlighting the versatility and usefulness of the technique to provide information of structural aspects and properties of carbon materials. Finally, a set of TGA parameters are recommended for the analysis of carbon nanomaterials to obtain reliable data.

The concealment of assets is a critical challenge in financial fraud and asset recovery investigations, posing significant obstacles for creditors and regulatory authorities. National governments commonly possess the necessary data for detecting and combating this type of fraud, typically related to personal data and asset ownership. However, this information is often dispersed across different departments within the same government and sometimes in databases shared by other countries. This leads to difficulty semantically integrating this large amount of data in various formats and correlating entities through identifying hidden relationships, which are essential in this type of analysis. In this regard, this work proposes an ontology to support the data integration process in the domain of asset concealment and recovery and fill the gap in the existence of a public ontology for this domain. The applicability of this ontology in the context of integration between data from different departments and countries was validated. The use of the ontology in a pilot project in the context of a tool for investigating this type of fraud was conducted with a Brazilian government agency, and the users validated its applicability. Finally, a new method for constructing ontologies is proposed. The proposed process was evaluated during the asset concealment ontology building and proved to be more suitable than the similar processes analyzed concerning the partial reuse of existing ontologies and the construction of ontologies for data with a transnational scope.

Background: Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) and the β-thalassemia trait (BTT) are two main causes of hypochromic–microcytic anemia worldwide. Researchers have described many red blood cell (RBC) indices as screening tests for presumptive differentiation, based on differences observed in complete blood count (CBC) data for each condition. There are few BTT reports in Chile, and neither laboratories nor clinical staff have widely used these indices. Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic performance of 29 RBC indices in 182 patients (51 BTT and 131 IDA) and compare CBC results in both groups. Methods: A retrospective search was carried out in the Laboratory Information System between January 2021 and February 2024 to collect results from CBC, and 29 RBC indices were calculated for each patient. Then, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, Youden’s index, positive likelihood ratio, negative likelihood ratio, and diagnostic accuracy were calculated using MedCalc©. Results: The Green and King, Wongprachum, and Keikhaei indices showed the best discriminatory power with Youden index values of 0.923, 0.908, and 0.896, respectively, and significant differences were observed in all CBC parameters between BTT and IDA patients (p < 0.001). Conclusions: The Green and King, Wongprachum, and Keikhaei indices showed the best performance; therefore, they can be used as screening for the differential diagnosis between BTT and IDA in order to improve diagnosis given the important therapeutic and epidemiological implications. In this way, clinical laboratories could have a main role in the investigation of these patients.
