Reactor-emitted electron antineutrinos can be detected via the inverse beta decay reaction, which produces a characteristic signal: a two-fold coincidence between a prompt positron event and a delayed neutron capture event within a specific time frame. While liquid scintillators are widely used for detecting neutrinos reacting with matter, detection is difficult because of the low interaction of neutrinos. In particular, it is important to distinguish between neutron (n) and gamma (γ) signals. The principle of the interaction of neutrons with matter differs from that of gamma rays with matter, and hence the detection signal’s waveform is different. Conventionally, pulse shape discrimination (PSD) is used for n/γ separation. This study developed a machine learning method to see if it is more efficient than the traditional PSD method. The possibility of n/γ discrimination in the region beyond the linear response limits was also examined, by using 10- and 2-inch photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) simultaneously. To the best of our knowledge, no study has attempted PSD in a PMT nonlinear region using artificial neural networks. Our results indicate that the proposed method has the potential to distinguish between n and γ signals in a nonlinear region.

In this paper, a data processing approach was developed to accurately extract the ring-down time and amplitude of the saturated cavity ring-down (CRD) signal; both were utilized to determine simultaneously the high reflectance and residual transmittance of highly reflective (HR) mirrors with a dual-channel CRD configuration. The influence of saturation was eliminated by deleting the beginning saturated data points of the saturated CRD signal and fitting the remaining non-saturated CRD signal to a single-exponential function. By comparing the reflectance/transmittance measurement results of HR samples obtained via data processing of saturated CRD signals and via single-exponentially fitting non-saturated CRD signals with utilization of neutral density filter(s) to eliminate saturation, it was found that the reflectances obtained with both methods were in excellent agreement, while the residual transmittance obtained with the saturated CRD signal was more accurate than that obtained with the neutral-density-filter-attenuated non-saturated CRD signal. The proposed data processing method eliminated the need to use the neutral density filters, therefore avoiding the adding of the optical density error to the uncertainty of residual transmittance measurement and improving the measurement accuracy. The proposed data processing method also extended the dynamic range of the dual-channel CRD scheme for simultaneous measurement of reflectance, transmittance and optical loss.

This work considers the isothermal process of incompressible viscous fluid filtration in an oil-saturated, fractured-porous reservoir. A study of the pressure and water saturation distribution process is carried out for a case in which a production well is put into operation. For this problem, i.e., a mathematical model in a two-dimensional formulation, a numerical method and a parallel algorithm are proposed. The mathematical model of two-phase filtration is written in accordance with the classical laws of continuum mechanics and Darcy’s law and also includes a function of fluid exchange between low-permeability pores and high-permeability natural fractures within the framework of the Warren–Root model. The numerical solution is based on the finite-difference method and a splitting scheme of physical processes and spatial coordinates. For a split system with respect to piezoconductivity, an implicit finite-difference scheme with fixed saturations is constructed, and with respect to saturation transfer, explicit and implicit difference schemes are constructed. For parallel implementation of the developed numerical approach, a method based on geometric parallelism is selected. Testing of the developed method is performed using the example of calculating liquid mass transfer for a wide range of parameters. To verify the model, the obtained calculated pressure curves are compared with field data recorded by a deep-well measuring device. The results allow for estimation of the distribution of reservoir pressure and water saturation depending on the permeability of the fracture set and the pore part. The obtained results allow for monitoring of well operations, reducing unexpected accident risks and optimizing the development system in order to increase oil production in fractured-porous reservoirs. Computational experiments confirm the efficiency of the developed numerical algorithm and its parallel implementation.

In response to the fairness issue arising from the unequal delay of vehicles in different phases at intersections and considering the actual situation of small and variable delays for vehicles in low-saturation intersection phases, this paper proposes the concept of “sacrificing efficiency for fairness”. Firstly, the universality of unfair delay phenomena at intersection phases is explained, especially at low-saturation intersections where the fluctuation in phase delays is 1.87 times higher than at other intersections. Then, a fairness evaluation index is constructed using information entropy, and the feasibility of the proposed approach is demonstrated. Subsequently, a signal optimization model that balances efficiency and fairness is proposed. Finally, the proposed model is validated through case studies, showing that it not only simultaneously considers efficiency and fairness but also has minimal impact on efficiency. Moreover, the changes to timing schemes in the efficiency model are much smaller compared to the model that only considers fairness. Sensitivity analysis reveals that the model performs better under low-saturation intersection conditions.

Forest biomass estimation is undoubtedly one of the most pressing research subjects at present. Combining multi-source remote sensing information can give full play to the advantages of different remote sensing technologies, providing more comprehensive and rich information for aboveground biomass (AGB) estimation research. Based on Landsat 8, Sentinel-2A, and ALOS2 PALSAR data, this paper takes the artificial coniferous forests in the Saihanba Forest of Hebei Province as the object of study, fully explores and establishes remote sensing factors and information related to forest structure, gives full play to the advantages of spectral signals in detecting the horizontal structure and multi-dimensional synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data in detecting the vertical structure, and combines environmental factors to carry out multivariate synergistic methods of estimating the AGB. This paper uses three variable selection methods (Pearson correlation coefficient, random forest significance, and the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO)) to establish the variable sets, combining them with three typical non-parametric models to estimate AGB, namely, random forest (RF), support vector regression (SVR), and artificial neural network (ANN), to analyze the effect of forest structure on biomass estimation, explore the suitable AGB of artificial coniferous forests estimation of machine learning models, and develop the method of quantifying saturation value of the combined variables. The results show that the horizontal structure is more capable of explaining the AGB compared to the vertical structure information, and that combining the multi-structure information can improve the model results and the saturation value to a great extent. In this study, different sets of variables can produce relatively superior results in different models. The variable set selected using LASSO gives the best results in the SVR model, with an R2 values of 0.9998 and 0.8792 for the training and the test set, respectively, and the highest saturation value obtained is 185.73 t/ha, which is beyond the range of the measured data. The problem of saturation in biomass estimation in boreal medium- and high-density forests was overcome to a certain extent, and the AGB of the Saihanba area was better estimated.

Vegetation classification has always been the focus of remote sensing applications, especially for tropical regions with fragmented terrain, cloudy and rainy climates, and dense vegetation. How to effectively classify vegetation in tropical regions by using multi-spectral remote sensing with high resolution and red-edge spectrum needs to be further verified. Based on the experiment in Wenchang, Hainan, China, which is located in the tropical monsoon region, and combined with the ZY-1 02D 2.5 m fused images in January, March, July, and August, this paper discusses whether NDVI and four red-edge vegetation indices (VIs), CIre, NDVIre, MCARI, and TCARI, can promote vegetation classification and reduce the saturation. The results show that the schemes with the highest classification accuracies in all phases are those in which the red-edge VIs are involved, which suggests that the red-edge VIs can effectively contribute to the classification of vegetation. The maximum accuracy of the single phase is 86%, and the combined accuracy of the four phases can be improved to 92%. It has also been found that CIre and NDVIre do not reach saturation as easily as NDVI and MCARI in July and August, and their ability to enhance the separability between different vegetation types is superior to that of TCARI. In general, red-edge VIs can effectively promote vegetation classification in tropical monsoon regions, and red-edge VIs, such as CIre and NDVIre, have an anti-saturation performance, which can slow down the confusion between different vegetation types due to saturation.

In the cultivation of maize, the leaf area index (LAI) serves as an important metric to determine the development of the plant. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that capture RGB images, along with random forest regression (RFR), can be used to indirectly measure LAI through vegetative indices. Research using these techniques is at an early stage, especially in the context of maize for silage. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate which vegetative indices have the strongest correlations with maize LAI and to compare two regression methods. RFR, ridge regression (RR), support vector machine (SVM), and multiple linear regression (MLR) regressions were performed in Python for comparison using images obtained in an area cultivated with maize for silage. The results showed that the RGB spectral indices showed saturation when the LAI reached 3 m2 m−2, with the VEG (vegetable index), COM (combination), ExGR (red–green excess), and TGI (triangular greenness index) indices selected for modeling. In terms of regression, RFR showed superior performance with an R2 value of 0.981 and a root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.138 m2 m−2. Therefore, it can be concluded that RFR using RGB indices is a good way to indirectly obtain the LAI.

Background: In antibiotic naïve populations, there is a strong association between the use of an antimicrobial and resistance to this antimicrobial. Less evidence is available as to whether this relationship is weakened in populations highly exposed to antimicrobials. Individuals taking HIV preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) have a high intake of antimicrobials. We previously found that there was no difference in the prevalence of pheno- and genotypic antimicrobial resistance between two groups of PrEP clients who had, and had not, taken antimicrobials in the prior 6 months. Both groups did, however, have a higher prevalence of resistance than a sample of the general population. Methods: In the current study, we used zero-inflated negative binomial regression models to evaluate if there was an individual level association between the consumption of antimicrobials and 1. the minimum inhibitory susceptibilities of oral Neisseria subflava and 2. the abundance of antimicrobial resistance genes in the oropharynges of these individuals. Results: We found no evidence of an association between the consumption of antimicrobials and the minimum inhibitory susceptibilities of oral Neisseria subflava or the abundance of antimicrobial resistance genes in these individuals. Conclusions: We conclude that in high-antimicrobial-consumption populations, the association between antimicrobial consumption and resistance may be attenuated. This conclusion would not apply to lower-consumption populations.

Porous materials have emerged as one of the most widely employed sound-absorbing materials in practical applications, owing to their excellent sound absorption properties and lightweight nature. Unsaturated porous materials have the potential to achieve superior sound absorption effects and significantly reduce mass. However, current research on the sound absorption performance of unsaturated porous materials is limited. This paper used a modified transfer matrix method (MTMM), which relies on matrix dimensionality reduction, to analyze the sound absorption characteristics of unsaturated porous materials under various boundary conditions. The study also examines the impact of different parameters, such as material thickness and saturation, on sound absorption performance and compares the results. The findings indicate that when a solid elastic plate is attached to an unsaturated porous elastic plate, the absorption coefficient decreases while the transmission loss increases. Additionally, reducing the thickness of the plate and increasing its porosity and saturation levels lead to an increase in the absorption coefficient and a decrease in the transmission loss.

This paper introduces an FPGA-based implementation of a smart switch designed to avoid inrush currents occurring during the connection of single-phase transformers utilized in grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) systems. The magnitude of inrush currents is notably impacted by the residual flux within the transformer core and the precise moment of energization relative to the wave cycle. Alternative methods frequently hinge on intricate procedures to estimate residual flux. This challenge is adeptly circumvented by the innovative smart control system proposed herein, rendering it a cost-effective solution for grid-connected PV systems. The proposed solution for mitigating inrush current remains effective, even in the face of challenges with current and voltage sensors. This resilience arises from the system’s ability to learn and adapt by leveraging information acquired from the network.

Currently, crop physiological responses to waterlogging are considered only in a few crop models and in a limited way. Here, we examine the process bases of seven contemporary models developed to model crop growth in waterlogged conditions. The representation of plant recovery in these models is over-simplified, while plant adaptation or phenotypic plasticity due to waterlogging is often not considered. Aeration stress conceptualisation varies from the use of simple multipliers in equations describing transpiration and biomass to complex linkages of aeration-deficit factors with root growth, transpiration and nitrogen fixation. We recommend further studies investigating more holistic impacts and multiple stresses caused by plant behaviours driven by soils and climate. A sensitivity analysis using one model (a developer version of APSIM) with default parameters showed that waterlogging has the greatest impact on photosynthesis, followed by phenology and leaf expansion, suggesting a need for improved equations linking waterlogging to carbon assimilation. Future studies should compare the ability of multiple models to simulate real and in situ effects of waterlogging stress on crop growth using consistent experimental data for initialisation, calibration and validation. We conclude that future experimental and modelling studies must focus on improving the extent to which soil porosity, texture, organic carbon and nitrogen and plant-available water affect waterlogging stress, physiological plasticity and the ensuing temporal impacts on phenology, growth and yield.

Photoplethysmography (PPG) is used for heart-rate monitoring in a variety of contexts and applications due to its versatility and simplicity. These applications, namely studies involving PPG data acquisition during day-to-day activities, require reliable and continuous measurements, which are often performed at the index finger or wrist. However, some PPG sensors are susceptible to saturation, motion artifacts, and discomfort upon their use. In this paper, an off-the-shelf PPG sensor was benchmarked and modified to improve signal saturation. Moreover, this paper explores the feasibility of using an optimized sensor in the lower limb as an alternative measurement site. Data were collected from 28 subjects with ages ranging from 18 to 59 years. To validate the sensors’ performance, signal saturation and quality, wave morphology, performance of automatic systolic peak detection, and heart-rate estimation, were compared. For the upper and lower limb locations, the index finger and the first toe were used as reference locations, respectively. Lowering the amplification stage of the PPG sensor resulted in a significant reduction in signal saturation, from 18% to 0.5%. Systolic peak detection at rest using an automatic algorithm showed a sensitivity and precision of 0.99 each. The posterior wrist and upper arm showed pulse wave morphology correlations of 0.93 and 0.92, respectively. For these locations, peak detection sensitivity and precision were 0.95, 0.94 and 0.89, 0.89, respectively. Overall, the adjusted PPG sensors are a good alternative for obtaining high-quality signals at the fingertips, and for new measurement sites, the posterior pulse and the upper arm allow for high-quality signal extraction.

This paper discusses the Topp-Leone-G power series class of distributions. The greatest attention is paid to the investigation of intrinsic characteristic “saturation” to the horizontal asymptote in the Hausdorff sense. Some estimates for the value of the Hausdorff distance are obtained. We present a new family of recurrence generated adaptive functions with corresponding applications. The usefulness of the obtained results is demonstrated in a simulation study of some real data sets from the medical sector and insurance. Some suitable software modules within the programming environment CAS MATHEMATICA are proposed.

The resistivity of calcareous sand is one of its inherent physical characteristic parameters, and the study of the resistivity characteristics of calcareous sand is of great significance in the subsequent study of the relationship between the resistivity of calcareous sand under different loads and its mechanical properties. This study uses alternating current (AC) electrical resistance testing equipment based on the two-electrode method to study the effects of pore water, temperature, relative density, saturation, and other factors on the resistivity of calcareous sand. We used the experimental results to analyze in detail the effects of various influencing factors on the resistivity of calcareous sand and established a relationship between them. Research has shown that as the temperature increases, the conductivity of the medium in the solution increases and the resistivity decreases. The resistivity of the calcareous sand of the three size fractions decreases with increasing saturation, and the relationship between them is a power function. The resistivity of saturated calcareous sand with three size fractions increases with increasing density, and the two show a good linear relationship. The results of this research can provide support for the study of the relationship between the resistivity and mechanical properties of calcareous sand under different loads.

The landscape evolution of the glacier valleys of glaciokarsts is described. Depending on the character of coveredness (quality and thickness of the cover), altitude and the presence of karst features, different ways of geomorphic evolution occur adjacently. Most widespread is the denudation of bare surfaces by karren formation. During this process, beds are denuded, which is primarily controlled by the dip direction of the beds. The denudation of beds may modify the original cross-section of valleys. On terrains covered with caprock, the cover is becoming thinner by erosion processes since the debris is transported into the karst depressions and then from here into the karst. On terrains covered with limestone debris, if the cover is purely limestone debris, denudation is cyclical. The thick cover becomes thinner by dissolution and subsequently, the bedrock is dissolved by karren formation if water with dissolution capacity arrives at the bedrock. Then, the debris that developed on the bedrock makes the cover thicker from below. Reaching an adequate thickness, the process is repeated by the dissolution of the cover debris. In cirques, the superficial deposit is transported into the karst, which is supplied from the slopes, increasing the upfilling of the feature.

In this paper, a mathematical model of multiphase filtration in a deformable porous medium is presented. Based on the proposed model, the influence of the deformation of a porous medium on the filtration processes is studied. Numerical calculations are performed and the characteristics of the process are determined. This paper shows that an increase in the compressibility coefficient leads to a sharp decrease in porosity, absolute permeability and internal pressure of the medium near the well, and a decrease in the distance between wells leads to a sharp decrease in hydrodynamic parameters in the inter-well zone.

Specific aspects of semi-solid dosage forms for topical application include the nature of the barrier to be overcome, aspects of susceptibility to physical and chemical instability, and a greater influence of sensory perception. Advances in understanding the driving forces of skin penetration as well as the design principles and inner structure of formulations, provide a good basis for the more rational design of such dosage forms, which still often follow more traditional design approaches. This review analyses the opportunities and constraints of rational formulation design approaches in the industrial development of new topical drugs. As the selection of drug candidates with favorable physicochemical properties increases the speed and probability of success, models for drug selection based on theoretical and experimental approaches are discussed. This paper reviews how progress in the scientific understanding of mechanisms and vehicle-influence of skin penetration can be used for rational formulation design. The characterization of semi-solid formulations is discussed with a special focus on modern rheological approaches and analytical methods for investigating and optimizing the chemical stability of active ingredients in consideration of applicable guidelines. In conclusion, the combination of a good understanding of scientific principles combined with early consideration of regulatory requirements for product quality are enablers for the successful development of innovative and robust semi-solid formulations for topical application.

Distributed Dynamic Strain Sensing (DDSS), also known as Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS), is becoming a popular tool in array seismology. A new generation of engineered fibers is being developed to improve sensitivity and reduce the noise floor in comparison to standard fibers, which are conventionally used in telecommunication networks. Nevertheless, standard fibers already have extensive coverage around the Earth’s surface, so it motivates the use of the existing infrastructure in DDSS surveys to avoid costs and logistics. In this study, we compare DDSS data from stack instances of standard multi-fiber cable with DDSS data from a co-located single-fiber engineered cable. Both cables were buried in an area located 2.5 km NE from the craters of Mt. Etna. We analyze how stacking can improve signal quality. Our findings indicate that the stack of DDSS records from five standard fiber instances, each 1.5 km long, can reduce optical noise of up to 20%. We also present an algorithm to correct artifacts in the time series that stem from dynamic range saturation. Although stacking is able to reduce optical noise, it is not sufficient for restoring the strain-rate amplitude from saturated signals in standard fiber DDSS. Nevertheless, the algorithm can restore the strain-rate amplitude from saturated DDSS signals of the engineered fiber, allowing us to exceed the dynamic range of the record. We present measurement strategies to increase the dynamic range and avoid saturation.

Marine controlled-source electromagnetics (MCSEM) is an effective method to map the spatial distribution of gas hydrate and calculate gas hydrate saturation. An MCSEM survey is conducted in the Lingnan low uplift (LNLU), Qiongdongnan Basin (QDNB), South China Sea (SCS), and then the measured data are processed to obtain the geoelectric structure. The estimated gas hydrate stability zone (GHSZ) ranges from 0 to 320 mbsf, and shallow high-conductive sediments serving as gas hydrate caps are at depths ranging from 0 to 100 mbsf (meters below the seafloor). The 2D resistivity model reveals multiple high-resistivity bodies at depths ranging from 100 to 320 mbsf, and BSRs are at depths of 240 mbsf to 280 mbsf, indicating a transversely uneven gas hydrate reservoir in the study area. Moreover, two high-resistivity bodies are detected beneath the GHSZ, implying the presence of potential gas transport pathways. The gas hydrate saturation with a variation of 0–68.4% is calculated using the MCSEM resistivity and Archie’s law. According to the resistivity model and geological data, the transversely uneven gas hydrate reservoir may be associated with multiple gas sources, including shallow biogenic gas and deep pyrolytic gas. The shallow biogenic gas is transported to the GHSZ via short-distance migration and free diffusion, and the deep pyrolytic gas is transported to the GHSZ via two microcracks. In addition, this case emphasizes that the dynamic accumulation of gas hydrate is an important factor causing reservoir heterogeneity.

GYAGG:Tb (Ce) scintillators have been confirmed to be promising sources of light emission when excited by an intense 150 keV electron beam. The saturation of the scintillation yield under such excitation conditions has been studied. To explain the results obtained, a model that considers the Auger quenching mechanism was used. The Ce-doped material did not show saturation, whereas a moderate 30% drop of the yield was measured in the Tb-doped sample at the highest excitation beam intensity ~1 A/cm2. This put forward a way to exploit the Tb-doped scintillator for indirect β-voltaic batteries.

The aim of this work was to evaluate how 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) treatment affects appearance of plum fruit. Fruit of ‘Angeleno’ and ‘Topend’ cultivars were treated with 625 ppb gaseous 1-MCP at 1 °C for 24 h after harvest. Samples without treatment, called control, and those subjected to the treatment were stored at 1 °C for 8 weeks (Topend) and 10 weeks (Angeleno). The subgroup of initial samples and those withdrawn from cold storage were also measured after 7 d storage at 20 °C. According to measured parameters of ethylene, CO2 production, firmness, and total soluble solids content, there was a clear difference between 1-MCP- treated and control samples for both cultivars. Color attributes of hue angle and saturation changed significantly during storage, especially for flesh color measured on fruit cut in half. The comparison revealed that saturation responded more sensitively to changes. Firmness correlated significantly with color attributes, and flesh saturation reached the highest value of Pearson’s correlation of r = 0.608 (p < 0.01) and Spearman’s rank correlation of ρ = 0.636 (p < 0.01). The specific plum color was also evaluated with a normalized blue value, which obtained significant linear correlation with firmness (r = −0.7414, p < 0.001). There was significant difference between cultivars in terms of surface color and its correlation with firmness as Pearson’s correlation obtained r = 0.833 (p < 0.001) for ‘Topend’ and r = 0.556 (p > 0.05) for ‘Angeleno’.

Elemental sulfur is an important non-metallic material that is widely used in various fields including chemical, metallurgical and sulfuric acid industries. Polymetallic sulfur slag (PSS) is an important secondary resource for the recovery of sulfur. However, separation of sulfur from PSS is difficult due to the tight binding of some thiophilic metals to sulfur. Herein, we proposed a recrystallization method for the effective separation of sulfur and metals by using organic solvents to control the particle size of sulfur crystals. It was suggested that the particle size of sulfur recovered in the close to saturation state of toluene is about 2000 μm, while the purity is as high as 99.6%. Moreover, the recovery rate is over 95%, which is more than the current commonly used flotation method. The growth mechanism of sulfur crystals under different saturation conditions lays a foundation for the deepening of the growth theory of large-size sulfur crystals. This method realized the effective separation of sulfur from metal sulfides such as FeS2 and ZnS, which provided an important guidance for the recovery of sulfur resources through a novel method of recrystallizing regulation.

Malfunctions in relay protection devices are predominantly caused by current transformer (CT) saturation which produces distortion in current measurements and disturbances in power system protection. The development of deep learning in power system protection is on the rise recently because of its robustness. This study presents a CT saturation detection where the secondary current becomes distorted. The proposed scheme offers a wide range of saturation detection and consists of a moving-window technique and stacked denoising autoencoders. Moreover, Bayesian optimization was used to minimize the difficulty of determining neural network structure for the proposed approach. The performance of the algorithm was evaluated for a-g faults on 154 kV and 345 kV overhead transmission line in South Korea. The waveform variation has been generated by PSCAD for different scenarios that heavily influence CT saturation. Moreover, a comparative analysis with other methods demonstrated the superiority of the proposed DNN method. With the proposed algorithm to detect CT saturation, it significantly yielded high accuracy and precision for CT saturation detection which were approximately 99.71% and 99.32%, respectively.

The influence of saturation on the Poisson’s ratio v of reservoir sediments has an engineering significance in the field of oil and nature gas exploration. Based on a self-developed combined (BE-EE-RC) test system, under the dehydration path, the Poisson’s ratio variation of reservoir silty-fine sand in Hangzhou Bay, China, was investigated. Results show that the P- and S-wave velocities vary non-monotonically with decreasing saturation at different net stresses, and reach a maximum at the optimum saturation Sr(opt); Biot’s theory with respect to variation in Vp with Sr matches well with the measured e data. With a small amount of gas intrusion, Poisson’s ratio of saturated sand shows a sudden drop and gradually stabilizes; then, it attenuates slowly and reaches the minimum value at Sr(opt). Once the saturation degree decreases to the level lower than Sr(opt), it rapidly increases. Based on the soil–water characteristic curve (SWCC) and mesoscopic evolution of internal pore water morphology, the variation in Poisson’s ratio v can be divided into four segments of saturation: the boundary effect stage, the primary transition stage, the secondary transition stage, and the unsaturated residual stage. Ultimately, a prediction model for Poisson ratio’s v of the silty-fine sand was proposed to consider the saturation variation.

Saturation is a key construct used by qualitative research theorists as a way to verify the rigor and validity of a study. This study intends to examine how saturation is used within qualitative educational technology studies that addressed saturation. We selected journals which (a) follow a peer review process; (b) are considered influential in their fields and of high quality, as reflected in being in Q1 (first quartile) or Q2 (second quartile) in Scopus; and (c) publish qualitative research. The number of journals selected for this study was 20, and we selected 3 articles from each. The methodology in the chosen articles was interview-based, and the articles were published in the journal in the 5 recent years 2018–2022 (i.e., a 5-year review period). The research results indicated that 20 out of 60 of the participating studies paid attention to the definition of saturation, 25 out of 60 participating studies paid attention to ‘why saturation was sought’, and 26 out of 60 participating studies paid attention to ‘when saturation was sought’. All the participating studies paid attention to ‘how was saturation assessed’. The most-mentioned expression to indicate the achievement of saturation was the emergence of new information, themes, categories, and codes, where most of the participating studies used expressions related to this aspect.

Current transformer saturation affects measurement accuracy and, consequently, protection reliability. One important concern in the case of overcurrent protections is the discrimination between faults and inrush current in power transformers. This paper presents an FPGA-based smart sensor to detect current transformer saturation, especially during inrush current conditions. Several methods have been proposed in the literature, but some are unsuitable for inrush currents due to their particular waveform. The proposed algorithm implemented on the smart sensor uses two time-domain features of the measured secondary current: the second-order difference function and the third-order statistic central moment. The proposed smart sensor presents high effectiveness and immunity against noise with accurate results in different conditions: different residual flux, resistive burdens, sampling frequency, and noise levels. The points at which saturation starts are detected with an accuracy of approximately 100%. Regarding the end of saturation, the proposed method detects the right ending points with a maximum error of a sample. The smart sensor has been tested on experimental online and real-time conditions (including an anti-aliasing filter) with accurate results. Unlike most existing methods, the proposed smart sensor operates efficiently during inrush conditions. The smart sensor presents high-speed processing despite its simplicity and low computational cost.

Elementary building blocks for the growth of KDP crystals were established. The solution of potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KH2PO4–KDP) has been experimentally studied by the small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) method. The analysis of SAXS data in the temperature range of 2.5–90 °C using a set of models of 3D fragments of the crystal structure showed that the saturated solution contains above K+, H2PO4− and KH2PO4 monomers, as well as mainly octamers. The 3D model of the octamer isolated from the crystal structure has dimensions of 17.443 Å along the [001] axis and 5.963 Å along the [100] and [010] axes. As the temperature is decreased, starting from the saturation temperature of the solution, the volume fraction of octamers sharply increases while the volume fraction of monomers decreases. The results indicate that the monomers and octamers represent major components in the solution with the presence of minor populations of other oligomers. The significant dominance of octamers in the supersaturated solution indicates that they are elementary building blocks for the growth of KDP crystals of tetragonal modification.

This is an experimental work performed to identify the influence of direct contact condensation inside an eductor. The fluid used in the experiments is water in two different phases: liquid and vapor, for primary and secondary flows, respectively. This study was conducted in an attempt to establish the suitability of an eductor as a combined vacuum generator and condenser for membrane desalination applications. The pressure and temperature measurements at critical points in the flow paths have been summarized to identify the influence of primary flow on secondary fluid saturation and condensation. In addition, the mechanism of phase change has been explained through the photography of fluid flow in a two-dimensional eductor. A consistent oscillation of the gas-liquid interface was observed during steady-state operations of the eductor. This work also contributes to the validation of future computational research. It will provide a baseline for computational thermal fluid analysis related to the mixing of condensing and non-condensing flow. In general, the research encompasses the practical operational scenario and provides information on the heat and mass transfer of direct contact condensation with a finite secondary source.

This paper proposes a complex vector discrete current controller based on the flux-linkage data to solve the current loop oscillation problem of high power-density synchronous machines. An offline flux-linkage table measurement method considering cross saturation is introduced, and the data are used to deduce the symmetrical complex vector model. The influence of latch and delay of inverters on the line voltage of machines at high speed is analyzed and compensated during the controller design process. The proposed controller, which only needs to tune one parameter, can deal with the inductance mismatch issues caused by iron core saturation. The controller can be adopted in the current loop of saturated salient or nonsalient synchronous machines. Simulations and experiments have verified the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Coral sand is the main filling material for the island–reef foundation. Under tidal actions, the saturation (Sr) of coral sand layers varies with the specific depths in the reclaimed foundation. Studying the Sr effect of coral sand’s mechanical behaviors is crucial for the stability of the reclaimed foundation of island–reefs. In this study, a “quantitative injection method” was designed to prepare coral sand with saturation ranging from 90% to 100%, and unconsolidated–undrained (UU) triaxial shear tests were conducted on coral sand under different effective confining pressures (σ3′). The results indicated that the stress–strain curves of coral sand under various conditions were of the strain-softening type. When σ3′ = 200, 400, 600, and 800 kPa, the shear strength of coral sand decreased exponentially by 13.1, 9.1, 16.8, and 15.2%, respectively, with the increase in Sr from 90% to 100%. As Sr rose, the internal friction angle (φ) dropped by 3.77°. The cohesion (c) was not significantly affected by Sr compared to φ. In consideration of the physical susceptibility of coral sand to breakage, relative breakage ratio (Br) and modified relative breakage index (Br*) were introduced to evaluate the particle breakage behaviors of coral sand samples with different Sr levels in the triaxial shear process. It was found that Br and Br* increase linearly with increasing Sr; the effect of Sr on the particle breakage of coral sand weakens significantly when σ3′ is sufficiently large. The median particle size (d50) of coral sand decreases with increasing Sr, and presents a negative linear correlation with both Br and Br*. Based on comparing the strength and particle breakage characteristics of coral sand samples with varying Sr levels, this study suggests that 92.5% should be considered as the Sr value of coral sand available for testing.

This paper investigated and demonstrated an electric drive topology with inherently high reliability and improved performance. The topology combines a five-phase combined star-pentagon synchronous reluctance machine (SynRM) and a power electronic “matrix” converter without vulnerable electrolytic capacitors, which are often a point of failure of conventional drives. This drive is suitable for harsh environments, with possibly high ambient temperatures and limited maintenance. In this paper, an accurate model of the five-phase combined star-pentagon SynRM was introduced considering the effect of magnetic saturation and cross saturation on dq-flux-linkages. The five-phase combined star-pentagon SynRM will be connected to a three-to-five-phase indirect matrix converter (IMC) and the indirect field-oriented control based on a space vector pulse width modulation was applied. The introduced SVM commutates the bidirectional switches of the IMC at zero current which enhance and minimize the switching losses. The performance of the proposed drive system was studied and experimentally validated at different loading conditions. Finally, the reliability, cost, and performance of the proposed drive system were compared with the conventional drive system (three-phase star-connected SynRM fed from rectifier-inverter).

In this paper, the saturation of electrolytes on the mass transfer property of porous electrodes in non-aqueous lithium air batteries has been studied based on digital twin. Herein, we reconstruct the porous cathode based on X-ray micro-computed tomography (μct) and quantitatively analyze the pore size distribution, specific surface area, triple-phase interface area, conductivity and diffusion coefficient of reactants at varying filling degrees of the electrolyte. The results derived from digital twin provide insight into the gas–liquid two-phase mass transfer performance in the porous cathode with various degrees of electrolyte saturation and demonstrate that the optimum electrolyte saturation is 60%.

Currently, a soil stabilization approach using fly ash as an effective choice for increasing soil stiffness and strength has emerged. With the presence of water, the lime in the fly ash would be separated, generating cementitious materials binding the grains of sand. In the present study, the influence of curing time and saturation during specimen preparation on the behavior of fly ash-modified sand was observed by performing a series of splitting tensile strength tests. It was found that the splitting tensile strength increases with fly ash content and curing time and decreases with saturation. The splitting tensile strength produced at 30% saturation was approximately two-fold higher than 100%, particularly at one month of curing time. However, the splitting tensile strength at higher saturations approaches lower, especially at longer curing times. Porewater evaporation accelerates the self-hardening occurring over time during curing. By increasing the fly ash percentage from 5% to 20% in the mixture, the splitting tensile strength increased by up to twenty-fold in the present study. An equation has been proposed as a function of porosity/volumetric fly ash content, curing time, and saturation during the preparation of the specimen.

Saturation is one of the critical factors causing frost damage to rock masses in alpine regions, and dynamic stress perturbations further complicate the damage process. Therefore, the effects of water content and loadings should be considered in the construction and maintenance of rock structures during winter in cold regions. In this study, the effects of saturation and impact loading on the dynamic mechanical behavior of frozen red sandstone were investigated using a low-temperature split Hopkinson pressure bar system (LT-SHPB). By combining low-field nuclear magnetic resonance (LF-NMR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the dynamic evolution of the microstructure of the frozen sandstone due to changes in saturation was investigated. The results indicated that the increase of saturation reshapes the pore structure of the frozen sandstone and promotes the expansion of pores of different sizes during freezing, while at complete saturation the frozen samples are mainly developed with meso- and macropores. The dynamic strength, elastic modulus, and brittleness index of the frozen sandstone under impact loading, which are limited by the critical saturation Src, tend to increase and then decrease with saturation. For the four impact loads, the dynamic strength of the samples increased by 21.2%, 27.1%, 32.5%, and 34.3% when the saturation was increased from 0 to 50%, corresponding to 1.38, 1.43, 1.51, and 1.56 times the dynamic strength of the fully saturated samples, respectively. In contrast, the ultimate deformation capacity of the frozen sandstone showed an opposite trend with saturation. As the impact load increases, the dynamic strength, elastic modulus, and peak strain of the frozen sandstone show a significant strengthening effect due to the increase in strain rate, while its brittleness index gradually decreases, dropping by 11.2% at full saturation. In addition, the energy dissipation capacity of the frozen sample first increases and then decreases with increasing saturation, with the enhancement effect of saturation on energy dissipation smaller than the weakening effect.

Recent studies have shown that relative permeability can be modeled as a state function which is independent of flow direction and dependent upon phase saturation (S), phase connectivity (X), and fluid–fluid interfacial area (A). This study evaluates the impact of each of the three state parameters (S, X, and A) in the estimation of relative permeability. The relative importance of the three state parameters in four separate quadrants of S-X-A space was evaluated using a machine learning algorithm (out-of-bag predictor importance method). The results show that relative permeability is sensitive to all the three parameters, S, X, and A, with varying magnitudes in each of the four quadrants at a constant value of wettability. We observe that the wetting-phase relative permeability is most sensitive to saturation, while the non-wetting phase is most sensitive to phase connectivity. Although the least important, fluid–fluid interfacial area is still important to make the relative permeability a more exact state function.

A fundamental limitation of the spectral response of laser-pumped fluorescent nanostructured media was considered in terms of a probabilistic model establishing the relationship between the enhancement factor of a spectral quality and characteristic propagation and amplification scales of pump light and fluorescence in the medium. It was shown that the minimum spectral width of fluorescent response of the pumped medium is limited by competition between the stimulated emission and radiation losses in microscopic fluorescence emitters associated with the speckles randomly modulating the pumping light field. Theoretical results were compared to the experimental data on the spectral properties of the fluorescent response of laser-pumped nanostructured “anatase nanoparticles—dye solutions” systems with various structural and optical properties. Rhodamine 6G and 4-(dicyanomethylene)-2-methyl-6-(p-dimethylaminostyryl)-4H-pyran (DCM) were applied as fluorescent components in the examined systems with various scatter volume fractions, which were pumped by pulse-periodic laser radiation with various intensities at 532 nm. Comparison showed a fair agreement between the theoretical and experimental results.

The Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA) Precision Experiment Data Records (PEDR) serve as the geodetic reference of Mars. However, these MOLA footprints were geolocated using outdated auxiliary information that dates back to 2003. In this study, we recompute the MOLA PEDR footprint locations and investigate the impact of the updated spacecraft orbit model and Mars rotational model on MOLA’s geolocation. We observe quasi-exponential increases near the poles of up to 30 m in the recomputation residuals for the nadir profiles. Meanwhile, we demonstrate that limitations exist in the stored MOLA PEDR attitude records, which can shift the footprint up to hundreds of meters laterally and several meters radially. The usage of the Navigation and Ancillary Information Facility (NAIF)-archived attitude information instead can circumvent this issue and avoid the approximation errors due to discrete samplings of the attitude information used in geolocation by the PEDR dataset. These approximation errors can be up to 60 m laterally and 1 m radially amid controlled spacecraft maneuvers. Furthermore, the incorporation of the updated spacecraft orbit and Mars rotational model can shift the MOLA profiles up to 200 m laterally and 0.5 m radially, which are much larger in magnitude than the aforementioned dramatic increases near the poles. However, the shifted locations of the reprocessed profiles are significantly inconsistent with the PEDR profiles after the global cross-over analysis.

Natural gas hydrate is widely spread in marine environments around the world. It has great energy potential due to its high methane gas content. High-precision exploration and evaluation of marine gas hydrate still face great challenges as it is affected by the complex reservoir control mechanisms and distribution characteristics. Resistivity is widely used in geophysical logging and theoretical research on gas hydrate-bearing reservoirs by utilizing the high sensitivity electrical response. In this paper, based on the examination of the global marine gas hydrate occurrences, resistivity logging results are summarized. Then the key remaining gas hydrate resistivity experimental concerns are reviewed. In summary, resistivity properties are a reliable means to derive the gas hydrate reservoir characteristics, despite the effect induced by the anisotropic properties of hydrate reservoirs and drilling technology. The overall resistivity change associated with the occurrence of pore filling gas hydrate in reservoirs are relatively small, and the specific value is affected by sediment lithology and hydrate saturation. On the other hand, fracture filling hydrate reservoirs have strong anisotropy, and massive hydrate occurrences (i.e., layers of gas hydrate with no sediment) section shows very high resistivity variation. Clay minerals are an important factor restricting the accurate estimation of gas hydrate saturations from in situ resistivity measurements. Many experimental studies have proposed the correction of Archie empirical formula, but widely representative models have not yet been developed. It is worth noting that more complex resistivity measurements may be able to provide additional electrical response information on various gas hydrate systems.

We pursue a multi-leveled phenomenological exploration of revenge. Revenge’s puzzle is to give an account of what exactly revenge accomplishes when it apparently cannot alter the past or remedy the initiating harm. The structure of revenge consists of one harmed, the perception of harm and suffering, and one perceived as responsible for the harm. The situation is apperceived as a negatively saturated experience; as such, it binds and has a hold on the one harmed, constituting her as enthralled. Revenge seeks to remedy the situation by the intentional act of objectifying, constituting, and finitizing the infinite situation. This is accomplished by constituting the guilty one as guilty, thereby mastering, in some measure, the saturated situation. We suggest that the realm and machinery required for this process is found in the realm of the imagination, where similarity and association of ideas and concepts are at play. Saturation plays at the edge of this realm as alien. It is by way of the familiar and constituted that the alien is tamed, and revenge puts the situation to “rest”.

Core samples of the tight sandstone reservoir in the Bonan Oilfield were analyzed by using multiple petrophysical experimental techniques, then a multi-scale three-dimensional digital rock model was constructed. The pore structure parameters of tight sandstone and homogeneous Berea sandstone were compared. The electrical simulation method based on the digital rock model was utilized to quantitatively reveal the influence of five micro-pore structure parameters (pore size, throat size, pore-throat size, coordination number, and shape factor) on the rock’s electrical properties. In addition, the saturation of tight sandstone reservoirs was evaluated in combination with the three-component automatic mixed-connection conductivity model. The results show that the “non-Archie” phenomenon in sandstone is obvious, which is mainly caused by the small radius of the maximum connected pore throat and the complex structure of the pore throat. We noted that: with an increase in pore radius, throat radius, and coordination number, the formation factor decreases and tends to be stable; the pore-throat size increases and the formation factor decreases in the form of power function; the shape factor increases, and the formation factor increases; the larger the pore–throat ratio and shape factor, the greater the resistivity index; with an increase in coordination number, the resistivity index decreases; and the pore-throat size has no effect on the resistivity index. The calculation accuracy of oil saturation is improved by 6.54% by constructing the three-component automatic mixed-conductivity saturation model of tight sandstone.

This study presents a novel method to identify optically deep water using purely spectral approaches. Optically deep waters, where the seabed is too deep for a bottom reflectance signal to be returned, is uninformative for seabed mapping. Furthermore, owing to the attenuation of light in the water column, submerged vegetation at deeper depths is easily confused with optically deep waters, thereby inducing misclassifications that reduce the accuracy of these seabed maps. While bathymetry data could mask out deeper areas, they are not always available or of sufficient spatial resolution for use. Without bathymetry data and based on the coastal aerosol blue green (1-2-3) bands of the Sentinel-2 imagery, this study investigates the use of band ratios and a false colour HSV transformation of both L1C and L2A images to separate optically deep and shallow waters across varying water quality over four tropical and temperate submerged sites: Tanzania, the Bahamas, the Caspian Sea (Kazakhstan) and the Wadden Sea (Denmark and Germany). Two supervised thresholds based on annotated reference data and an unsupervised Otsu threshold were applied. The band ratio group usually featured the best overall accuracies (OA), F1 scores and Matthews correlation coefficients, although the individual band combination might not perform consistently across different sites. Meanwhile, the saturation and hue band yielded close to best performance for the L1C and L2A images, featuring OA of up to 0.93 and 0.98, respectively, and a more consistent behaviour than the individual band ratios. Nonetheless, all these spectral methods are still susceptible to sunglint, the Sentinel-2 parallax effect, turbidity and water colour. Both supervised approaches performed similarly and were superior to the unsupervised Otsu’s method—the supervised methods featuring OA were usually over 0.70, while the unsupervised OA were usually under 0.80. In the absence of bathymetry data, this method could effectively remove optically deep water pixels in Sentinel-2 imagery and reduce the issue of dark pixel misclassification, thereby improving the benthic mapping of optically shallow waters and their seascapes.

The aim of this paper is to present the optimal design process and an optimized model for a discontinuous armature arrangement permanent magnet linear synchronous motor (PMLSM). The stator tooth shapes are optimized to reduce detent force. When the shape of the stator is changed to reduce the detent force, the saturation magnetic flux density and the back electromotive force characteristics change. Multi-objective optimization is used to search for the local lowest point that can improve the detent force, saturation magnetic flux density, and back EMF characteristics. To reduce the detent force generated at the outlet edge, a trapezoidal auxiliary tooth was installed and the performance was analyzed. The experiment’s response surface methodology is used as an optimization method and all the experimental samples are obtained from finite-element analysis. The validity of this method is verified by comparing the optimized FEA model to the initial FEA model.

COVID-19 has specific characteristics that distinguish this disease from many other infections. We suggest that the pathogenesis of severe forms of COVID-19 can be associated with acidosis. This review article discusses several mechanisms potentially linking the damaging effects of COVID-19 with acidosis and shows the existence of a vicious cycle between the development of hypoxia and acidosis in COVID-19 patients. At the early stages of the disease, inflammation, difficulty in gas exchange in the lungs and thrombosis collectively contribute to the onset of acidosis. In accordance with the Verigo-Bohr effect, a decrease in blood pH leads to a decrease in oxygen saturation, which contributes to the exacerbation of acidosis and results in a deterioration of the patient’s condition. A decrease in pH can also cause conformational changes in the S-protein of the virus and thus lead to a decrease in the affinity and avidity of protective antibodies. Hypoxia and acidosis lead to dysregulation of the immune system and multidirectional pro- and anti-inflammatory reactions, resulting in the development of a “cytokine storm”. In this review, we highlight the potential importance of supporting normal blood pH as an approach to COVID-19 therapy.

Background: In antibiotic naïve populations, there is a strong association between the use of an antimicrobial and resistance to this antimicrobial. Less evidence is available as to whether this relationship is weakened in populations highly exposed to antimicrobials. Individuals taking HIV preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) have a high intake of antimicrobials. We previously found that there was no difference in the prevalence of pheno- and genotypic antimicrobial resistance between two groups of PrEP clients who had, and had not, taken antimicrobials in the prior 6 months. Both groups did, however, have a higher prevalence of resistance than a sample of the general population., Methods: In the current study, we used zero-inflated negative binomial regression models to evaluate if there was an individual level association between the consumption of antimicrobials and 1. the minimum inhibitory susceptibilities of oral Neisseria subflava and 2. the abundance of antimicrobial resistance genes in the oropharynges of these individuals., Results: We found no evidence of an association between the consumption of antimicrobials and the minimum inhibitory susceptibilities of oral Neisseria subflava or the abundance of antimicrobial resistance genes in these individuals., Conclusions: We conclude that in high-antimicrobial-consumption populations, the association between antimicrobial consumption and resistance may be attenuated. This conclusion would not apply to lower-consumption populations.

The dynamic two-phase flow in porous media was theoretically developed based on mass, momentum conservation, and fundamental constitutive relationships for simulating immiscible fluid-fluid retention behavior and seepage in the natural geomaterial. The simulation of transient two-phase flow seepage is, therefore, dependent on both the hydraulic boundaries applied and the immiscible fluid-fluid retention behavior experimentally measured. Many previous studies manifested the velocity-dependent capillary pressure–saturation relationship (Pc-S) and relative permeability (Kr-S). However, those works were experimentally conducted on a continuum scale. To discover the dynamic effects from the microscale, the Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) is usually adopted as a novel method. Compared to the conventional CFD methods solving Naiver–Stokes (NS) equations incorporated with the fluid phase separation schemes, the two-phase Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) can generate the immiscible fluid-fluid interface using the fluid-fluid/solid interactions at a microscale. Therefore, the Shan–Chen multiphase multicomponent LBM was conducted in this study to simulate the transient two-phase flow in porous media. The simulation outputs demonstrate a preferential flow path in porous media after the non-wetting phase fluid is injected until, finally, the void space is fully occupied by the non-wetting phase fluid. In addition, the inter-relationships for each pair of continuum state variables for a Representative Elementary Volume (REV) of porous media were analyzed for further exploring the dynamic nonequilibrium effects. On one hand, the simulating outcomes reconfirmed previous findings that the dynamic effects are dependent on both the transient seepage velocity and interfacial area dynamics. Nevertheless, in comparison to many previous experimental studies showing the various distances between the parallelly dynamic and static Pc-S relationships by applying various constant flux boundary conditions, this study is the first contribution showing the Pc-S striking into the nonequilibrium condition to yield dynamic nonequilibrium effects and finally returning to the equilibrium static Pc-S by applying various pressure boundary conditions. On the other hand, the flow regimes and relative permeability were discussed with this simulating results in regards to the appropriateness of neglecting inertial effects (both accelerating and convective) in multiphase hydrodynamics for a highly pervious porous media. Based on those research findings, the two-phase LBM can be demonstrated to be a powerful tool for investigating dynamic nonequilibrium effects for transient multiphase flow in porous media from the microscale to the REV scale. Finally, future investigations were proposed with discussions on the limitations of this numerical modeling method.

The main objectives of this study are to evaluate the effect of geometrical constraints of plain concrete and reinforced concrete slabs on the Wenner four-point concrete electrical resistivity (ER) test through numerical and experimental investigation and to propose measurement recommendations for laboratory and field specimens. First, a series of numerical simulations was performed using a 3D finite element model to investigate the effects of geometrical constraints (the dimension of concrete slabs, the electrode spacing and configuration, and the distance of the electrode to the edges of concrete slabs) on ER measurements of concrete. Next, a reinforced concrete slab specimen (1500 mm (width) by 1500 mm (length) by 300 mm (thickness)) was used for experimental investigation and validation of the numerical simulation results. Based on the analytical and experimental results, it is concluded that measured ER values of regularly shaped concrete elements are strongly dependent on the distance-to-spacing ratio of ER probes (i.e., distance of the electrode in ER probes to the edges and/or the bottom of the concrete slabs normalized by the electrode spacing). For the plain concrete, it is inferred that the thickness of the concrete member should be at least three times the electrode spacing. In addition, the distance should be more than twice the electrode spacing to make the edge effect almost negligible. It is observed that the findings from the plain concrete are also valid for the reinforced concrete. However, for the reinforced concrete, the ER values are also affected by the presence of reinforcing steel and saturation of concrete, which could cause disruptions in ER measurements.

Natural gas hydrates (GHs) filling sand layer pores are the most promising GHs that can be produced via conventional mechanisms in deep-sea environments. However, the seismic tracking of such thin GH-bearing sand layers is subject to certain limitations. For example, because most GH-bearing sand layers are thin and sparsely interbedded with mud layers, conventional seismic data with a maximum resolution of ~10 m are of limited use for describing their spatial distribution. The 2010 Ulleung Basin drilling expedition identified a relatively good GH reservoir at the UBGH2-6 site. However, the individual GH-bearing sand layers at this site are thin and cannot therefore be reliably tracked using conventional seismic techniques. This study presents a new thin layer tracking method using stepwise seismic inversion and 3D seismic datasets with two different resolutions. The high-resolution acoustic impedance volume obtained is then used to trace thin layers that cannot be harnessed with conventional methods. Moreover, we estimate the high-resolution regional GH distribution based on GH saturation derived from acoustic impedance at UBGH2-6. The thin GH layers, previously viewed as a single layer because of limited resolution, are further subdivided, traced, and characterized in terms of lateral variation.

The article reviews the results of a number of recent papers dealing with the revision of the simplest approaches to the control of first-order time-delayed systems. The concise introductory review is extended by an analysis of two discrete-time approaches to dead-time compensation control of stable, integrating, and unstable first-order dead-time processes including simple diagnostics of the model used and focusing on the possibility of simplified but reliable plant modelling. The first approach, based on the first historically known dead-time compensator (DTC) with possible dead-beat performance, is based on the reconstruction of the actual process variables and the compensation of input disturbances by an extended state observer (ESO). Such solutions play an important role both in a disturbance observer (DOB) based control and in an active disturbance rejection control (ADRC). The second approach considered comes from the Smith predictor with two degrees of freedom, which combines feedforward control with output disturbance reconstruction and compensation by the parallel plant model. It is shown that these two approaches offer advantageous properties in the case of actuator limitations, in contrast to the commonly used PID controllers. However, when applied to integrating and unstable first-order systems, the unconstrained and possibly unobservable output disturbance signal of the second solution must be eliminated from the control loop, due to the hidden structural instability of the Smith predictor-like solutions. The modified solutions, usually referred to as filtered Smith predictor (FSP), then no longer provide a disturbance signal and thus no longer fully fit into the concept of Industry 4.0, which is focused on further optimization, predictive maintenance in dynamic systems, diagnosis, fault detection and fault identification of dynamic processes and forms the basis for the digitalization of smart production. Nevertheless, the detailed analysis of the elimination of the unstable disturbance response mode is also worth mentioning in terms of other possible solutions. The application of both approaches to the control of a thermal process shows almost equivalent quality, but with different dependencies on the tuning parameters used. It is confirmed that a more detailed identification of the controlled process and the resulting higher complexity of the control algorithms does not necessarily lead to an increase in the resulting quality of the transients, which underlines the importance of the simplified plant modelling for practice.

The design of proxy techniques is an innovative tool to monitor the potentially toxic elements of pollution in road dust. This study evaluated the use of road dust color as a proxy methodology to identify samples contaminated with presumably contaminating elements. FRX determined the concentrations of Fe, Ti, Rb, Sr, Y, Cu, Zn, and Pb in eighty-five road dust samples. The appliance of the RGB system and the Munsell color cards identified five color groups of road dust samples. The discriminant analysis validated these groups by colorimetric indices and presumably contaminating elements. The “very dark gray” color of road dust contains the highest concentrations of Pb, Cu, Zn, and Y. The redness and saturation rates showed high correlations with presumably contaminating elements in “dark gray” and “very dark gray” color samples. The color of road dust, as a proxy technique, allows identifying samples contaminated with presumably contaminating elements.

One-third of all mosquitoes belong to the Aedini, a tribe comprising common vectors of viral zoonoses such as Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. To improve our understanding of their evolution, we present an updated multigene estimate of Aedini phylogeny and divergence, focusing on the disentanglement between nuclear and mitochondrial phylogenetic signals. We first show that there are some phylogenetic discrepancies between nuclear and mitochondrial markers which may be caused by wrong taxa assignment in samples collections or by some stochastic effect due to small gene samples. We indeed show that the concatenated dataset is model and framework dependent, indicating a general paucity of signal. Our Bayesian calibrated divergence estimates point toward a mosquito radiation in the mid-Jurassic and an Aedes radiation from the mid-Cretaceous on. We observe, however a strong chronological incongruence between mitochondrial and nuclear data, the latter providing divergence times within the Aedini significantly younger than the former. We show that this incongruence is consistent over different datasets and taxon sampling and that may be explained by either peculiar evolutionary event such as different levels of saturation in certain lineages or a past history of hybridization throughout the genus. Overall, our updated picture of Aedini phylogeny, reveal a strong nuclear-mitochondrial incongruence which may be of help in setting the research agenda for future phylogenomic studies of Aedini mosquitoes.
