Climate variation throughout the year affects photosynthesis and other physiological processes correlated with plant development and yield. This study aimed to evaluate the changes in the physiological attributes of Coffea canephora genotypes over the year in the Brazilian Amazon and assess their relationship with crop yield. The experiment was carried out in three cultivation systems with three genotypes. The evaluations were carried out in four periods: the peak of the dry season (S1); the beginning of the rainy season (S2); the peak of the rainy season (S3); and the beginning of the dry season (S4). A dataset of gas exchange, pigment indices, chlorophyll fluorescence, branch growth, and coffee yield was obtained. The group of gas exchange variables was the main contributor to treatment discrimination and was most affected by seasons. As expected, the values of gs, E, and A were significantly lower in S1, while the values of VPDLeaf-ar, TLeaf, and IWUE were significantly higher. Our results demonstrate that climatic seasonality affects the photosynthesis of Amazonian Robustas coffee, even under irrigated conditions, particularly in response to increased VPD. The physiological variables analyzed at the leaf level, even in different periods, did not explain the differences in the yield of C. canephora.

Treatments that increase the germination potential and vigor of Glycine max seedlings are continuously being stimulated, with the aim of achieving a higher percentage of emergence and better performance in the field. Considering the relationship of tryptophan with germination-associated phytohormones, this study tested the hypothesis that exogenous supply of tryptophan to soybean seeds can affect germination, physiological vigor, and the accumulation of primary and oxidative metabolism molecules in seedlings. Soybean seeds were exposed to soaking solutions containing different concentrations of the amino acid (0, 25, 50, 100, and 200 µM), and the seedlings were evaluated at three time periods, at 8 h after sowing (HAS), and 5 and 14 days after sowing (DAS). Treated seeds showed better germination fitness and seedlings showed greater vigor, and these parameters increased with increasing concentrations of tryptophan. In the initial hours and days of germination process evaluation (14 HAS and 5 DAS), the activities of starch metabolism enzymes (α- and β-amylase) tended to be higher, resulting in increased contents of sucrose, reducing sugars, and total soluble solids at 8 DAS, constituting an important metabolic effect for seedling growth. On the other hand, the induction of germination and vigor promoted by exogenous tryptophan in soybean seedlings occurred by stimulating the metabolic pathways of oxidative stress, resulting in increased concentrations of H2O2, malondialdehyde, and proline in the tissues. Additionally, it led to increased activities of the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase and ascorbate peroxidase. These parameters were responsive to increasing supplied concentrations of tryptophan. Thus, the metabolic stress in soybean seeds induced by auxin seems to be an important inductive pathway for germination and vigor of G. max seeds.

The heavy metal Cd accumulates in trophic chains, constituting a toxic element for photosynthesizing organisms, including the algal photobionts of lichen. Thus, as lichens respond differently to heavy metal toxicity, we hypothesized that the species Parmotrema tinctorum and Usnea barbata, commonly sampled in the Cerrado ecoregion, could be sensitive to Cd and, therefore, be used to biomonitor the dispersion of this metal. We also aimed to indicate the responsiveness of biological markers to Cd in these species by exposing the thalli to simulated rainfall with increasing metal concentrations. We observed that both lichen species are responsive to Cd stress; however, different pathways are accessed. The synthesis of carotenoids by P. tinctorum and the production of antioxidant enzymes by U. barbata seem to constitute relevant response strategies to Cd-induced stress. The lichen morphoanatomy, cell viability, photobiont vitality index, chlorophyll a fluorescence, and chlorophyll a synthesis were efficient biomarkers for the effects of increasing Cd exposure in P. tinctorum, being the variables primarily associated with damage to the photobiont. For U. barbata, the lichen morphoanatomy, photochemistry, and antioxidant enzyme activity (catalase, superoxide dismutase and ascorbate peroxidase) were essential to reflect Cd toxicity. However, the species P. tinctorum was characterized as the most sensitive to Cd toxicity, constituting a good bioindicator for the presence of this metal. It can be used in the diagnosis of air quality in urban and industrial areas or even in forest areas influenced by Cd in phosphate fertilizers.
