Since the Hellenistic period, preparatory drawings known as sinopiae were employed as guidelines for mosaicists in creating mosaics. The sinopiae served as the basis for style and content, facilitating the placement of colored tesserae in the supporting mortar. The technology of the mosaic and pigments used reflect the capacity of the mosaic workshop and its master. This work explores a polychrome sinopia that was found under a Byzantine mosaic of an Armenian Chapel in Jerusalem, by a multi-analytical characterization of mineralogical and chemical properties. The composition of the pigments in the black and red areas of the sinopia include carbon black and red ochre, respectively, utilized in the fresco technique. Since colored tesserae are placed in wet mortar, it can be deduced that mosaicists worked together with painters during the executionary steps. This has corresponding implications for historical and artistic specializations at mosaic workshops, with deeper understanding of mosaic production processes. This research also highlights the importance of studying sinopiae under floor mosaics, which is a source of information on the pigments, paintings techniques, and the people who executed the work, all embedded in mortar which is well protected below the stone tesserae.

Children/adolescents with cancer can develop adverse effects impacting gross motor function. There is a lack of gross motor function assessment tools that have been validated for this population. Background/Objectives: Otosclerosis is a relatively uncommon condition that causes conductive hearing loss in children. The preferred treatment for adults is stapedotomy, while for individuals under 18 years old, there is an ongoing discussion about the best treatment approach. Thus, the surgical procedure for the stapes in pediatric patients continues to be a subject of debate. This study aimed to evaluate the results of stapes surgery in children, trying to understand, based on our results, whether this is actually the most suitable option. Methods: The study included 18 patients who underwent surgery between January 2013 and December 2023. The patients’ ages ranged from 11 to 18 years, with an average age of 14.7. Out of the total 21 surgeries, three patients opted for bilateral surgery. Pre- and post-operative data were compared, focusing on the mean air conduction (AC) and bone conduction (BC) thresholds at frequencies of 0.5, 1, 2, and 4 kHz. Additionally, pre-operative thresholds and the post-operative air–bone gap (ABG) were examined. Results: After a year, the air–bone gap was effectively reduced to 10 dB or less in 94% of the 21 cases, and to 20 dB or less in 98% of all cases. Conclusions: Our results and research in the field have consistently shown that stapedotomy, when conducted by skilled otosurgeons, is a reliable and successful procedure for a considerable number of patients. The outcomes it generates are similar to those achieved through the procedure conducted during adulthood.

Background: To compare perioperative outcomes and trifecta rates between laparoscopic and robotic partial nephrectomies (PN) using the Hugo™ RAS System, a study was conducted between October 2022 and September 2023. Methods: Twenty-two patients underwent minimally invasive PN for cystic renal tumors at our institution (group A: RAPN = 6; group B: Laparoscopic PN = 16). The trifecta was defined as the coexistence of negative surgical margin status, no Clavien–Dindo grade ≥ 3 complications, and eGFR decline ≤ 30%. Continuous variables were presented as median and IQR and compared using the Mann–Whitney U test, while categorical variables were presented as frequencies (%) and compared using the χ2 test. For all statistical analysis, a two-sided p-value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: All patients successfully underwent off-clamp minimally invasive PN without the need for conversion or additional port placement. Group A showed a lower preoperative eGFR rate and a higher clinical tumor size, while group B displayed a higher number of male patients and bilateral lesions. However, these differences were not statistically significant (all p > 0.1). Regarding perioperative data, group A showed a lower operative time (79.5 vs. 134.5 min, p = 0.01), while group B showed a higher trend of benign histology (62.5% vs. 33.3%). All the other perioperative data were comparable between the two groups (all p > 0.2). The rate of trifecta achievement was 83.3% and 87.5% (p = 0.80) for group A and B, respectively. Conclusion: This study emphasizes the advantages of RAPN over laparoscopic procedures in terms of operative time. Extensive experience in Laparoscopic PN could be a key factor when approaching RAPN learning curve.

Spine pain (SP) is the most common musculoskeletal disorder that causes transitional forms of motor disability. Considering its affordability and safety, manipulative therapy (MT) stands as one of the primary therapeutic approaches for SP and the related dysfunctional consequences. However, it is still difficult to assess and quantify the results of this treatment since there is a lack of objective evaluation tools in the available scientific literature. Thus, the purpose of this comprehensive review is to summarize the main outcomes used to evaluate the effectiveness of spine manipulations, focusing on their strengths and weaknesses. An extensive review of the PubMed, Cochrane, and Embase databases was performed to identify the literature of the last ten years regarding MT and the related assessment tools. A total of 12 studies met the inclusion criteria. The analyzed literature indicates that a wide range of outcome measures have been used to assess the effectiveness of spine MT. Pain is the main aspect to be investigated but it remains difficult to elucidate since it is strongly linked to various dimensions such as self-perception and psychological aspects. Therefore, it seems necessary to include new tools for evaluating the effects of spine MT, with the aim of exploiting new technologies and taking into consideration the SP biomechanical and biopsychosocial aspects.

It is since the beginning of the so-called ‘digital revolution’ in the 1950s that technological tools have been developed to simplify and optimise traditional, time-consuming, and laborious anamnestic collection for many physicians. In recent years, more and more sophisticated ‘automated’ anamnestic collection systems have been developed, to the extent that they can actually enter daily clinical practice. This article not only provides a historical overview of the evolution of such tools, but also explores the ethical and medico-legal implications of the transition from traditional to digital anamnesis, including the protection of data confidentiality, the preservation of the communicative effectiveness of the doctor–patient dialogue and the safety of care in patients with poor digital and health literacy.

Hyperventilation induces metabolic changes that can elicit nystagmus (hyperventilation-induced nystagmus, HVIN) in various vestibular disorders, revealing vestibular imbalance and bringing out central or peripheral asymmetries. In acute unilateral vestibulopathy (AUVP, namely vestibular neuritis), hyperventilation can induce different patterns of nystagmus (excitatory, inhibitory, or negative), disclosing or modifying existing static vestibular asymmetries through its ability to invalidate compensation or increase peripheral excitability. In this context, we followed the evolutionary stages of HVIN in AUVP across 35 consecutive patients, with the goal of assessing alterations in the oculomotor pattern caused by hyperventilation over time. In the acute phase, the incidence of the excitatory pattern (and the strongly excitatory one, consisting of a reversal nystagmus evoked by hyperventilation) was significantly higher compared to the inhibitory pattern; then, a progressive reduction in the incidence of the excitatory pattern and a concomitant gradual increase in the incidence of the inhibitory one were observed in the follow-up period. Assuming the role of the ephaptic effect and the transient loss of vestibular compensation as opposing mechanisms, i.e., excitatory and inhibitory, respectively, the oculomotor pattern evoked by hyperventilation is the result of the interaction of these two factors. The data obtained allowed us to hypothesize an interpretative model regarding the pathogenetic aspects of responses evoked by hyperventilation and the etiologies of the disease: according to our hypotheses, the excitatory pattern implies a neuritic (viral) form of AUVP; instead, the inhibitory (and negative) one can be an expression of both the neuritic (viral) and vascular forms of the disease.

This study focuses on slope stability and geological hazard analyses at the Italian Paleolithic site of Grotta Paglicci. The site is characterized by a cave that contains rich archaeological and anthropological finds, spanning various Paleolithic periods, and includes faunal remains, lithic artifacts, human burials, ornaments, mobiliary art objects, and unique Paleolithic wall paintings. The study employs a multi-technique approach that includes topographic surveys carried out by the robotic total station and GNSS receivers, photogrammetric acquisitions with an unmanned aerial system, 3D SLAM-based LiDAR mapping, and an engineering geological survey. The collected data allowed for the creation of georeferenced 3D models that were utilized in rock slope stability analysis and modeling. The results of this comprehensive survey highlighted how the bedding and joint discontinuities influence rock stability in both the external and internal areas of the cave. The integrated use of SLAM-based LiDAR and photogrammetry has been proven to be an efficient and essential tool in the evaluation of the structural interactions between the external morphology and the cave, thus allowing the proposal of safety measures that will keep the site accessible for future activities.

The degradation of cadmium yellow in paintings is influenced by various factors, primarily environmental conditions and light exposure. Applying a thin protective layer of linseed oil on the surface could help mitigate these processes. Linseed oil, being a natural material, acts as a barrier against harmful atmospheric agents like moisture and oxygen, which contribute to the degradation of pigments including cadmium yellow. Additionally, linseed oil reduces direct light exposure, thereby lowering the risk of fading and color alteration. In this study, we explored the degradation of cadmium pigments mixed with oil and applied on canvas. We elucidated how the use of a binder prevents the direct oxidation of the pigment, inducing artificial degradation by irradiating samples with UVA (365 nm) and UVC (250 nm) sources. By employing various spectroscopic techniques such as three-dimensional fluorescence mapping (PLE) and Raman, along with colorimetric analysis, we gained a comprehensive understanding of the degradation process, particularly when linseed oil serves as a protective layer.

The High-Energy Particle Detector (HEPD-02) is one of the scientific payloads of the China Seismo-Electromagnetic Satellite (CSES-02). The HEPD-02’s main purpose is to characterize the particle environment in the Earth’s vicinity, identifying sudden changes in the fluxes and correlating them with solar and terrestrial phenomena. Additionally, HEPD-02 also has capabilities in detecting Gamma-Ray Bursts. At the core of HEPD-02, a tower of scintillation counters made of plastic and LYSO crystals is able to recognize electrons in the range between 3 and 100 MeV, protons and nuclei between 30 and 200 MeV/n. Plastic scintillators covering the calorimeter on five sides allow to reject particles entering from the top and not completely absorbed within its volume. In this work, the design of the HEPD-02 is reviewed in comparison to its predecessor, HEPD-01, highlighting the innovations of the new design. The design of each scintillation counter type has been fully validated through a campaign of prototype realization, testing, and characterization. The production of the scintillation counters, including the PMT selection process, is also discussed. Finally, the performance of the counters is compared with simulations, showing an agreement of within 20% with the expected performance, thereby meeting expectations.

Nowadays, roadway infrastructures are designed in order to satisfy technical and economical requirements, as well as to guarantee advanced environmental performance. Focusing on that, this paper deals with an innovative procedure for the characterization of pavement materials, both asphalt and cement-bound mixtures. The methodology takes its cue from a previous study in which the so-called Environmental Asphalt Rating (EAR) was firstly introduced as a reference parameter for asphalt pavements to evaluate technical offers and for the assignment of scores, in terms of environmental impacts, during the tender phase. In this work, the EAR methodology is revised with a focus on the main variations and improvements related to the new version of the ISO standard. By applying the same approach to rigid or concrete pavements, a preliminary version of the Environmental Concrete Rating (ECR) is presented. For ECR, a correction is provided regarding functionality through a fatigue-related parameter and the surface characteristics related to the IRI value. Despite its strong applicability to the pavement sector, the strength of the proposed method is its ability to be fine-tuned to different fields by varying the associated performance coefficients.

Migraine pathogenic pathways may selectively target the cochlea. A qualitative and quantitative analysis of cochlear symptoms in migraine patients without vestibular migraine and/or Méniere’s disease was conducted. We examined 60 consecutive patients with history of cochlear symptoms, including fullness, tinnitus, and hearing loss. Patients were divided into two groups based on migraine history: M (migraine) and nM (no migraine). The incidence of migraine was compared to a homogeneous control group with dysfunctional and inflammatory dysphonia without cochlear symptoms. The type, time of onset, recurrence, bilaterality of symptoms, and hearing threshold were analyzed. The incidence of migraine was significantly higher (p = 0.04) in patients with cochlear symptoms than in the control group. The onset of symptoms is significantly earlier (p < 0.05) in the presence of migraine. The fullness, recurrence, and bilaterality of symptoms are associated with migraine in a statistically significant way (p < 0.05). Pure tone audiometry shows a statistically significant increase in the hearing threshold (500–1000 Hz) in group M. Based on developing findings, cochlear migraine may be considered as a novel clinical entity, like vestibular migraine. It would be the expression, in the absence of vertiginous symptoms, of a selective suffering of the anterior labyrinth by known operating mechanisms of migraine.

This paper presents the removal of a non-original varnish from the surface of a painting by Wassily Kandinsky based on prior experimentation carried out on mock-ups, which were made according to the original artistic technique and painting stratigraphy. Due to a generally serious state of conservation, the artwork underwent several treatments over the years that have changed its original appearance. This work focused on the study and characterization of the ketone-based varnish present on the surface to outline how this non-original film layer interacted with paint layers and increased deterioration phenomena. Aiming to identify the most suitable approach for the artwork, some preliminary cleaning tests were made on artificially aged mock-ups. A multi-analytical investigation was carried out through non-invasive and invasive techniques to support all steps of the conservation treatment. By comparing cleaning results on mock-ups, a suitable protocol was developed and applied to the original painting. The best results were obtained by using the Nanorestore Gel® Dry MWR (Medium Water Retention) with ethanol. The project has shown that the dissolving power of the solvent can effectively be controlled and limited at the surface by confining it to the nanostructure of the gel, thus minimizing the risk of interaction with the original paint layers.

Scope: The main purpose of our study was to collect computed tomography (CT) measurements of fat parameters that are significantly related to body mass index (BMI) and evaluate the associations of these measurements and sarcopenia with early and long-term complications after transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) in order to investigate the existence of the so-called ‘obesity paradox’ and the role of sarcopenia in this phenomenon. Materials and Methods: We analyzed the significance of fat CT measurements in 85 patients undergoing the TAVI procedure and compared these with each other, as well as with quantified CT BMI and fat density measurements. Secondly, we evaluated the associations of BMI, CT measurements of fat, and CT evaluations of skeletal muscle mass with early and long-term complications after 24 months of post-TAVI follow-up. Results: We found positive and significant relationships between fat CT measurements with each other and with BMI and a negative and significant relation between fat density and fat quantity. By comparing the CT measurements of fat and skeletal muscle mass with early and long-term complications after TAVI, we confirmed the existence of the ‘obesity paradox’ and the poor effect of sarcopenia after the TAVI procedure. Conclusions: We confirm that overweight and obesity are good prognostic factors, and sarcopenia is a poor prognostic factor for outcomes following the TAVI procedure. We focused on the scientific validation of an easy and fast way to measure fat and skeletal muscle mass using CT to better predict the outcomes of patients undergoing TAVI.

In this study, we report the synthesis and characterization of a novel photocatalyst composite composed of functionalized carbon nanotubes (f-CNT) and phenyl-modified graphitic carbon nitride (PhCN). The incorporation of the phenyl group extends the absorption range into the visible spectrum compared to pure g-C3N4. Additionally, the formation of the heterostructure in the f-CNT/PhCN composite exhibits improved charge transfer efficiency, facilitating the separation and transfer of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and reducing recombination rates. The photocatalytic performance of this composite was evaluated by the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) under visible light irradiation. The f-CNT/PhCN composite exhibits remarkable efficiency in degrading RhB, achieving 60% degradation after 4 h, and 100% after 24 h under low-power white LED excitation. This represents a substantial improvement over the non-functionalized CNT/PhCN composite, which shows much lower performance. In contrast, pure PhCN demonstrates very little activity. Structural and optical properties were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Raman spectroscopy, and UV–Vis spectroscopy. Time-resolved photoluminescence measurements were used to study the behavior of photoexcited carriers, confirming that the composite improves charge transfer efficiency for photogenerated carriers by approximately 30%. The results indicate that the functionalization of CNTs significantly enhances the photocatalytic properties of the composite, making f-CNT/PhCN a promising candidate for environmental remediation applications, particularly in the degradation of organic pollutants in wastewater.

The increasing demand for vehicles is leading to a rise in pollutant emissions across the world. This decline in air quality is significantly impacting public health, with internal combustion engines being a major contributor to this concerning trend. Ever-stringent regulations demand high engine efficiency and reduced pollutant emissions. Therefore, every automobile company requires rigorous methods for accurately estimating engine emissions. The implementation of advanced technologies, including machine learning methods, has proven to be a promising solution. The present work aims to develop an artificial intelligence-based model to estimate the pollutant emissions produced by an internal combustion engine under varying operating conditions. Experimental activities have been conducted on a single-cylinder spark ignition research engine with gasoline port fuel injection under both stationary and dynamic operating conditions. This work explores different artificial intelligence architectures and compares their performance in order to determine the best approach for the presented task. These structures have been trained and tested based on data obtained from the engine control unit and fast emission analyzer. The main target is to evaluate the possibility of applying the presented artificial intelligence predictive model as an on-board virtual tool in the estimation of emissions in real driving conditions.

This study presents a comprehensive analysis and radiocarbon dating of historical mortar and plaster samples from the San Salvatore—Massino Visconti complex in Piedmont, Northern Italy. Mortar samples and one charcoal sample were collected from various areas within the complex’s lower chapels. Samples were selected and characterized by means of a multi-analytical approach in order to draw inferences about their compositional, mineralogical, and microstructural features. The identification of hydromagnesite and magnesite in the mortar samples suggests the usage of magnesian binder mortar, potentially affecting radiocarbon dating due to its slower carbonation kinetics when compared to calcitic mortars. To mitigate this effect, a purification method was developed involving thermal treatment at 550 °C to isolate datable binding fractions. The results yielded reliable radiocarbon ages consistent with historical context, shedding light on construction materials dating from the 12th to 16th centuries. The study also challenges previous notions by demonstrating the feasibility of radiocarbon dating for magnesian mortars, opening new perspectives for dating such materials. These findings offer valuable insights into the construction history and material composition of the complex, corroborating historical information.

Background: Chronic Ankle Instability (CAI) is a common condition characterized by repeated episodes of ankle “giving way” and impaired balance, leading to functional limitations. Various rehabilitation techniques, including balance training, proprioceptive exercises, whole-body vibration (WBV), and novel approaches like stroboscopic vision, are used to address these deficits. This review evaluates the effectiveness of different rehabilitation interventions for CAI management. Methods: A review was conducted by analyzing 11 randomized controlled trials that investigated the impact of balance and proprioceptive training programs on CAI. The primary outcomes assessed were the Star Excursion Balance Test (SEBT), Cumberland Ankle Instability Tool (CAIT), and Foot and Ankle Ability Measure (FAAM). Methodological quality was assessed using the PEDro scale, and the risk of bias was evaluated with the ROB 2 tool. Results: All rehabilitation interventions demonstrated significant improvements in SEBT, CAIT, and FAAM scores. However, no single intervention was found to be consistently superior. Traditional balance training, strength exercises, BAPS, and WBV all provided meaningful functional gains. Stroboscopic vision training showed similar effectiveness compared to conventional approaches. The evidence supports a combination of balance and strength training for optimal recovery. Conclusions: Balance and proprioceptive exercises are effective in managing CAI, with improvements in both dynamic stability and subjective outcomes. No intervention stands out as the best, but personalized programs incorporating various methods are recommended. Future research should explore the long-term effects and potential synergies of combined interventions.

Objectives: The main objective of this study was to report and investigate the characteristics and longitudinal changes in dark-without-pressure (DWP) fundus lesions in patients with autoimmune diseases using multimodal imaging techniques. Methods: In this retrospective observational case series, five patients affected by ocular and systemic autoimmune disorders and DWP were examined. DWP was assessed by multimodal imaging, including color fundus photography (CFP), near-infrared reflectance (NIR), blue reflectance (BR), blue autofluorescence (BAF), optical coherence tomography (OCT), OCT-angiography (OCT-A), fluorescein angiography (FA) and indocyanine green angiography (ICGA), and functional testing, including standard automated perimetry (SAP) and electroretinography (ERG). Follow-up examinations were performed for four out of five patients (range: 6 months–7 years). Results: DWP fundus lesions were found in the retinal mid-periphery and were characterized by the hypo-reflectivity of the ellipsoid zone on OCT. DWP appeared hypo-reflective in NIR, BR and BAF, and exhibited hypo-fluorescence in FA in two patients while showing no signs in one patient. ICGA showed hypo-fluorescent margins in one patient. SAP and ERG testing did not show alterations attributable to the DWP lesion. Follow-up examinations documented rapid dimensional changes in DWP even in the short term (1 month). Conclusions: This study suggests a possible association between autoimmune diseases and DWP. New FA and ICGA features were described. The proposed pathogenesis hypotheses may operate as a basis for further investigation of a lesion that is still largely unknown. Large population studies would be necessary to confirm whether there is a higher incidence of DWP in this patient category.

Objectives: This study provides an overview of the composition of the raw root flesh of a panel of 22 sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) cultivars, with a focus on bioactive compounds. The large diversity of the proximate and phytochemical compositions observed between cultivars and within and between different flesh colors pointed out the importance of composition analysis and not only color choice for the design of foods with nutritional benefits. Methods: The nutritional composition (starch, protein, total dietary fibers) and bioactive compound composition of 22 cultivars from Reunion Island, maintained in the Vatel Biological Resource Center, were investigated. Results: Orange and purple cultivars stood out from white and yellow cultivars for their higher nutritional composition. Purple sweet potatoes were notable for their high contents of anthocyanins (55.7 to 143.4 mg/g dry weight (DW)) and phenolic compounds, in particular chlorogenic acid and ferulic acid, contributing to antioxidant activities, as well as their fiber content (14.1 ± 2.1% DW). Orange cultivars were rich in β-carotene (47.2 ± 0.7 mg/100 g DW) and to a lesser extent α-carotene (4.8 ± 1.2 mg/100 g DW). In contrast, certain white cultivars demonstrated suboptimal nutritional properties, rendering them less relevant even for applications where the lack of coloration in food is desired. Conclusions: Those characteristics enable the selection of sweet potato varieties to design food products ensuring optimal nutritional benefits and culinary versatility.

Processing and microstructure are fundamental in shaping material behavior and failure characteristics. Additively manufactured materials, due to the rapid heating and solidification process, exhibit unique microstructures compared to their as-cast counterparts, resulting in distinct material properties. In this work, the response of the titanium alloy Ti6Al4V has been investigated for different processing conditions through quasi-static testing. AM Ti6Al4V was fabricated by employing Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) and Selective Laser Melting (SLM) techniques. Both materials present a similar microstructure consisting of an acicular martensitic α′-phase. Commercial Ti6Al4V-grade 5 (supplied as bars) was also examined after heat treatment to achieve a microstructure akin to the AM material. The heat treatment involved rapid heating above the β-phase region and water quenching to obtain a full martensite microstructure. A similar constitutive behavior and tensile–compressive asymmetry in strength were noted for the investigated materials. However, AM alloys exhibited a significantly higher deformation at failure, reaching nearly 40%, compared to only 6.1% for the wrought martensitic material, which can be attributed to the dissimilar distribution of both α′ laths and prior-β grain boundaries in the investigated materials. The results indicate that AM can be implemented for the fabrication of martensitic microstructures with mechanical properties superior to those obtained with conventional water-quenching.

In this pilot study, a multi-parametric analysis comparing immune responses in sera of adult healthy subjects (HS) or people with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) undergoing the single or simultaneous administration of mRNA-based COVID-19 and cellular quadrivalent inactivated influenza vaccines was conducted. While SARS-CoV-2 antibodies remains comparable, influenza antibody titers and seroconversion were significantly higher upon simultaneous vaccination. Magnitude of anti-influenza humoral response closely correlated with an early innate immune signature, previously described for the COVID-19 vaccine, composed of IL-15, IL-6, TNF-α, IFN-γ, CXCL-10 and here extended also to acute-phase protein Pentraxin 3. People with T2D receiving simultaneous vaccination showed a protective response comparable to HS correlating with the early induction of IFN-γ/CXCL10 and a significant reduction of the circulating glucose level due to increased oxidation of glucose digestion and consumption. These data, although preliminary and in-need of validation in larger cohorts, might be exploited to optimize future vaccination in people with chronic disorders, including diabetes.

Mixed Reality (MR) environments hold immense potential for inducing a sense of embodiment, where users feel like their bodies are present within the virtual space. This subjective experience has been traditionally assessed using subjective reports and behavioral measures. However, neurophysiological approaches offer unique advantages in objectively characterizing embodiment. This review article explores the current state of the art in utilizing neurophysiological techniques, particularly Electroencephalography (EEG), Photoplethysmography (PPG), and Electrodermal activity (EDA), to investigate the neural and autonomic correlates of embodiment in MR for out-of-the-lab applications. More specifically, it was investigated how EEG, with its high temporal resolution, PPG, and EDA, can capture transient brain activity associated with specific aspects of embodiment, such as visuomotor synchrony, visual feedback of a virtual body, and manipulations of virtual body parts. The potential of such neurophysiological signals to differentiate between subjective experiences of embodiment was discussed, with a particular regard to identify the neural and autonomic markers of early embodiment formation during MR exposure in real settings. Finally, the strengths and limitations of the neurophysiological approach in the context of MR embodiment research were discussed, in order to achieve a more comprehensive understanding of this multifaceted phenomenon.

Background: Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD), a novel term for Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD), is associated with liver mitochondrial dysfunction. We previously demonstrated that mitochondrial respiratory capacity in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) was significantly reduced in patients with MASLD compared to non-MASLD controls. For MASLD treatment, guidelines recommend behavioral and dietary changes to reduce body weight. A recent 12-month clinical trial demonstrated that ameliorating patients’ lifestyles through improved adherence to the Mediterranean diet and encouraged physical activity results in MASLD remission or regression. Methods: As a sub-study of the 12-month clinical trial, we evaluated the effects of the Mediterranean diet-oriented intervention on PBMC mitochondrial DNA content and respiratory parameters and on various biomarkers associated with MASLD. Results: Contrary to what was found at the baseline, after twelve months of intervention, systemic inflammatory and bioenergetics parameters did not differ between MASLD patients (N = 15) and control subjects (N = 17). PBMCs from MASLD subjects showed rescued basal respiration, ATP-linked respiration, maximal respiration, and spare respiratory capacity. The observed recovery coincided with a significant increase in the patients’ adherence to the Mediterranean diet (Medscore). Conclusions: Our findings indicate that a Mediterranean diet-oriented intervention, without calorie reduction, preserves blood cell mitochondrial function in MASLD subjects. Thus, PBMC bioenergetics-based assays might be taken into account not only for diagnosing but also for monitoring therapeutic responses in MASLD.

Background and aim: Over the last few years, SARS-CoV-2 has been reported as a possible cause of acute pancreatitis (AP), but whether it is a relevant clinical–epidemiological entity is still a matter of debate. We aim to evaluate the epidemiological characteristics of AP during the first year of the COVID pandemic (2020) and compare them with the pre-COVID period (2008–2019) to identify any differences and clarify a potential causative role of SARS-CoV-2. Methods: We used a monocentric retrospective study of 132 AP patients during 2020 and 1987 AP patients during 2008–2019. Diagnosis and severity were classified according to the revised Atlanta criteria. Propensity score matching was performed according to clinical–epidemiological features, and outcome analysis was performed on two subgroups of 109 patients. Results: The total number of AP cases in 2020 is one of the lowest in the last 13 years (132 cases, median 161, IQR 146-183). No major epidemiological differences were noted. During 2020, we observed a significant modification of the distribution of etiologies (p < 0.001), mainly based on a decrease in biliary forms (59.6% vs. 43.2%) and an increase in alcoholic forms (6.9% vs. 12.9%). Idiopathic forms remain unchanged (20.5% vs. 21.9%). The proportion of AP of idiopathic etiology and SARS-CoV-2 infection was 0.008%. There were no differences in terms of severity distribution (p = 0.127), length of stay (p = 0.916), need for ICU (p = 0.139), or mortality (p = 0.462). Even among statistically matched groups, there were no differences between the length of stay (9 vs. 10 days, p = 0.890), need for ICU admission (1.8% vs. 3.7%, p = 0.683), or in-hospital mortality (0 vs. 1.8%, p = 0.342). Conclusions: The lower AP diagnoses indicate delayed and likely missed diagnoses, probably because of both hesitancy and organizational problems during the pandemic. The unchanged proportion of idiopathic forms supports the hypothesis that SARS-CoV-2 is not an AP trigger.

Ototoxic drugs can result in hearing loss and tinnitus. Early detection of the ototoxic process can help minimize or prevent these consequences. The American Speech–Language–Hearing Association has provided guidelines for monitoring ototoxicity, whereas Italy has not yet implemented a national monitoring protocol. This study aims to assess the current state of ototoxicity monitoring in patients receiving cisplatin therapy. A self-administered survey has been used to gather information from oncologists, audiologists, and ENT specialists. The research was conducted at Santa Maria della Misericordia hospital in Perugia. Two questionnaires were administered, one to ENT/audiology specialists and another to oncology specialists. Both questionnaires were used to collect information on awareness of chemotherapy-induced ototoxicity. A comprehensive understanding of cisplatin-induced ototoxicity has been widely established (100%). The most commonly reported audiological symptoms by patients were hearing loss (100%) and tinnitus (87.5%). The majority of ENT and audiologists (93.8%) and oncologists (92.9%) expressed the need for a specific ototoxic monitoring program. However, they noted the absence of a well-defined ototoxicity monitoring protocol. A well-established and efficient ototoxic monitoring system facilitates early detection of ototoxic hearing loss and subsequent rehabilitation of inevitable hearing impairment.

Background: Although there is much literature demonstrating weight changes in professional mixed martial arts (MMA) athletes, there is minimal data comparing male and female MMA athletes. Therefore, the purpose of the current study was to compare weight changes between professional male and female MMA athletes leading up to competition. Methods: One hundred and three professional flyweight MMA athletes competing for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) were used for the study. Weight was obtained at multiple time points leading up to the competition. Two-way ANOVAs and post hoc t-tests were used, and significance was set at p ≤ 0.05. Results: ANOVA revealed there was a significant main effect of condition for weight changes (p < 0.001) and a significant main effect of sex on weight changes (p = 0.002) prior to competition. Post hoc analysis revealed that males lost more weight prior to the official weigh-in and gained more weight prior to competition when compared to females (p ≤ 0.05). Conclusion: MMA athletes lose weight prior to the official weigh-in and gain weight prior to competition. Moreover, male MMA athletes lose more weight prior to and gain more weight after when compared to female MMA athletes competing in the UFC’s flyweight division.

The agrifood industry shows one of the widest ranges of possible end products from crops, such as fruits, legumes, cereals, and tubers. The raw material is generally collected and processed industrially, producing a significant amount of organic waste. The overall picture is made more complex by the wide variety of nature and composition, and by the difficulty identifying the possible uses of the wastes coming from the processing industry. Such wastes are often disposed of in landfills or treated in waste-to-energy plants depending on the area where they are produced. The circular economy approach has suggested numerous possible generic strategies to improve waste management, involving the exploitation of waste to obtain new value-added products. The use of fibers from legume waste from the canning industry in the bioplastics production sector is a promising and relatively little explored line, particularly for the fibers of beans and green beans. With this in mind, in this article, green bean and borlotti bean fibers obtained from the treatment of wastes were used as reinforcing material for polycaprolactone (PCL)-based biocomposites by melt blending. Analyses were carried out about the morphological, spectroscopic, thermal, and mechanical properties of the starting and the obtained materials.

Innovative solutions are now being researched to manage the ever-increasing amount of data required to optimize the performance of internal combustion engines. Machine learning approaches have shown to be a valuable tool for signal prediction due to their real-time and cost-effective deployment. Among them, the architecture consisting of long short-term memory (LSTM) and one-dimensional convolutional neural networks (1DCNNs) has emerged as a highly promising and effective option to replace physical sensors. This architecture combines the capacity of LSTM to detect patterns and relationships in smaller segments of a signal with the ability of 1DCNNs to detect patterns and relationships in larger segments of a signal. The purpose of this work is to assess the feasibility of substituting a physical device dedicated to calculating the torque supplied by a spark-ignition engine. The suggested architecture was trained and tested using signals from the field during a test campaign conducted under transient operating conditions. The results reveal that LSTM + 1DCNN is particularly well suited for signal prediction with considerable variability. It constantly outperforms other architectures used for comparison, with average error percentages of less than 2%, proving the architecture’s ability to replace physical sensors.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the perioperative analgesic and sedative effects of oral CBD in cats undergoing ovariohysterectomy. Twenty-two cats were assigned to receive either oral cannabidiol oil (2 mg/kg, CBD group, n = 12) or placebo oil (0.1 mL/kg, Placebo group, n = 10) 60 min before the premedication. The anesthetic protocol included dexmedetomidine/meperidine, propofol, and isoflurane. Intravenous fentanyl was given to control cardiovascular responses to surgical stimulation. Pain was assessed at 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 6 and 8 h post-extubation using the UNESP–Botucatu multidimensional composite pain scale and the Glasgow feline composite-measure pain scale. Sedation scores were assessed at the same timepoints and at 15 min after the premedication. Morphine was administered as rescue analgesia. Higher sedation scores were recorded in the CBD group at 15 min after premedication (p = 0.041). Intraoperatively, more cats required fentanyl in the Placebo group than in CBD group (p = 0.028). The pain scores did not differ between groups, except at 0.5 h post-extubation when lower scores were detected in the CBD group (p = 0.003–0.005). Morphine was required in 100% of the animals in both groups. CBD increased preoperative sedation and decreased intraoperative analgesic requirements, with minimal evidence of postoperative analgesic benefits over the placebo.

Background: Line-field confocal optical coherence tomography is a novel technology able to reproduce a “virtual biopsy” of the skin. The aim of this review is to explore the application of line-field confocal optical coherence tomography (LC-OCT) in various skin diseases, covering skin cancers, inflammatory and infectious skin diseases, genetic diseases, cosmetic procedures, and less common disorders. Methods: Study selection was conducted based on LC-OCT and using pertinent MeSh terms, following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines from inception to March 2024; to evaluate the quality and risk of bias of studies, Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies-2 (QUADAS-2) was used. Results: the search retrieved 154 papers according to the selection criteria; after removing publications by one or more of the exclusion criteria, a total of 96 studies were found to be suitable for the analysis. Conclusions: Increasing evidence supports the use of LC-OCT as an adjunctive diagnostic tool for the in vivo diagnosis of a variety of skin tumors. As this device can be considered a “bridge” between dermoscopy and histopathology, widening applications in numerous fields of clinical dermatology, including inflammatory skin disease treatment, presurgical mapping, cosmetic procedures, and monitoring of non-invasive therapies, have been explored.

The automotive industry is increasingly challenged to develop cleaner, more efficient solutions to comply with stringent emission standards. Hydrogen (H2)-powered internal combustion engines (ICEs) offer a promising alternative, with the potential to reduce carbon-based emissions and improve efficiency. However, hydrogen combustion presents two main challenges related to the calibration process: emissions control and measurement of the air excess coefficient (λ). Traditional lambda sensors struggle with hydrogen’s combustion dynamics, leading to potential inefficiencies and increased pollutant emissions. Consequently, the determination of engine performance could also be compromised. This study explores the feasibility of using machine learning (ML) to replace physical lambda sensors with virtual ones in hydrogen-fueled ICEs. The research was conducted on a single-cylinder spark-ignition (SI) engine, collecting data across a range of air excess coefficients from 1.6 to 3.0. An advanced hybrid model combining long short-term memory (LSTM) networks and convolutional neural networks (CNNs) was developed and fine-tuned to accurately predict the air–fuel ratio; its predictive performance was compared to that obtained with the backpropagation (BP) architecture. The optimal configuration was identified through iterative experimentation, focusing on the neuron count, number of hidden layers, and input variables. The results demonstrate that the LSTM + 1DCNN model successfully converged without overfitting; it also showed better prediction ability in terms of accuracy and robustness when compared with the backpropagation approach.

Chronic exposure to heavy metals has been widely demonstrated to induce pathological features in different tissues and, in particular, in the central nervous system. Specific neurons, including dopaminergic neurons, were observed to be more susceptible to toxic agents. Several previous studies performed on zebrafish (Danio rerio) models observed that exposure to nickel (one of the most abundant heavy metals) induces impairment of memory and anxious-like behaviors. Nevertheless, this phenotypical evidence has not been associated with dopaminergic system damage, and no reports showing the effects of nickel on dopaminergic neurons are available. In this study, we aim to analyze the precise distribution and variation in dopaminergic neurons in adult zebrafish after chronic (96 h) exposure to nickel ions dissolved in water at different sub-lethal doses (0.4 mg L−1; 2 mg L−1 and 4 mg L−1). The effects of treatment on dopaminergic neurons were evaluated by measuring transcript and protein levels of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), described as a dopaminergic neuron marker. As shown, the expression of the th1 and th2 genes was reduced in the entire brain of zebrafish treated with nickel. Immunostaining analysis allowed us to localize TH-expressing neurons mainly in the posterior tuberculum, where they were observed to be reduced after nickel treatment in a dose-dependent fashion. Consistently, the TUNEL assay revealed a significant increase in apoptosis of TH-expressing cells after treatment with 2 mg L−1 and 4 mg L−1 of nickel. Our findings represent the first evidence of the effect of nickel on the dopaminergic system.

Knowledge of epidemiology is essential for guiding correct antibiotic prescription, reducing bacteremia-associated mortality, and implementing targeted infection control programs. However, only a few studies have reported on the epidemiology of bloodstream infections (BSIs) in pediatrics. We performed a retrospective analysis of all BSIs (excluding those caused by common skin contaminants) diagnosed from 2006 to 2022 in patients younger than 18 years who were treated at an Italian pediatric tertiary care hospital. Overall, 2395 BSIs were recorded, including 2207 (92.15%) due to bacteria and 188 (7.85%) due to fungi. The incidence rate (BSIs/10,000 hospital discharges, IR) of bacterial BSIs significantly increased during the study period. In particular, BSIs caused by S. aureus (including MRSA), Enterobacterales (including ESBL and AmpC producers), Enterococcus spp., and P. aeruginosa became more common. The frequency of carbapenem-resistant strains was S. pneumoniae. The BSIs were stratified by patient age, and S. aureus was the most frequent cause of BSIs in all age groups, while E. coli was the most frequent in the Enterobacterales family. S. agalactiae was the third most frequent cause of neonatal early-onset BSIs. The prevalence of Enterococcus spp. increased in the subgroups from 8 days to 5 years of age, while P. aeruginosa became more prevalent in children over 5 years of age. S. aureus was also the most frequent isolate in both community- and hospital-onset BSIs, followed by E. coli. The prevalence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogens was very low. It was C. albicans was the most frequently isolated strain, followed by C. parapsilosis. Notably, the IR of fungemia did not change significantly during the study period, in spite of an increase in the absolute number of events. The continuous monitoring of local epidemiology is essential to identify changes in the IRs of pathogens and antibiotic susceptibility and to guide antibiotic treatments, especially in the phase when antibiograms are not yet available.

SQM-ISS is a detector that will search from the International Space Station for massive particles possibly present among the cosmic rays. Among them, we mention strange quark matter, Q-Balls, lumps of fermionic exotic compact stars, Primordial Black Holes, mirror matter, Fermi balls, etc. These compact, dense objects would be much heavier than normal nuclei, have velocities of galaxy-bound systems, and would be deeply penetrating. The detector is based on a stack of scintillator and piezoelectric elements which can provide information on both the charge state and mass, with the additional timing information allowing to determine the speed of the particle, searching for particles with velocities of the order of galactic rotation speed (v ≲ 250 km/s). In this work, we describe the apparatus and its observational capabilities.

The Advanced X-ray Imaging Satellite (AXIS) promises revolutionary science in the X-ray and multi-messenger time domain. AXIS will leverage excellent spatial resolution (80× that of Swift), and a large collecting area (5–10× that of Chandra) across a 24-arcmin diameter field of view at soft X-ray energies (0.3–10.0 keV) to discover and characterize a wide range of X-ray transients from supernova-shock breakouts to tidal disruption events to highly variable supermassive black holes. The observatory’s ability to localize and monitor faint X-ray sources opens up new opportunities to hunt for counterparts to distant binary neutron star mergers, fast radio bursts, and exotic phenomena like fast X-ray transients. Providing electrical power to ships while they are docked, cold ironing allows ships to turn off their engines and reduces emissions of air pollutants and greenhouse gases. This study identifies and assesses ship and port emissions and analyzes the potential for emission reduction achievable by cold ironing in European ports. It includes (1) a review of the current state of cold ironing in European ports; (2) an analysis of the time spent in ports by ships; (3) a quantification of emissions potentially avoided by means of a larger-scale use of cold ironing in Europe; (4) an estimation of the benefits achievable and the perspective to play a role in meeting emission reduction targets, improving air quality in port cities; (5) an analysis of the challenges and limitations of larger-scale cold ironing implementation; (6) potential solutions to overcome them. The results of this study could have important implications for (a) the shipping industry, which could benefit from the need for additional standardized electrical equipment onboard; (b) port authorities, which could benefit from providing additional services to the ships; (c) policymakers working to reduce emissions and promote energy efficiency, who could better approach their local and global targets.

We aim to develop a deep learning-based algorithm for automated segmentation of thigh muscles and subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) from T1-weighted muscle MRIs from patients affected by muscular dystrophies (MDs). From March 2019 to February 2022, adult and pediatric patients affected by MDs were enrolled from Azienda Ospedaliera Universitaria Pisana, Pisa, Italy (Institution 1) and the IRCCS Stella Maris Foundation, Calambrone-Pisa, Italy (Institution 2), respectively. All patients underwent a bilateral thighs MRI including an axial T1 weighted in- and out-of-phase (dual-echo). Both muscles and SAT were manually and separately segmented on out-of-phase image sets by a radiologist with 6 years of experience in musculoskeletal imaging. A U-Net1 and U-Net3 were built to automatically segment the SAT, all the thigh muscles together and the three muscular compartments separately. The dataset was randomly split into the on train, validation, and test set. The segmentation performance was assessed through the Dice similarity coefficient (DSC). The final cohort included 23 patients. The estimated DSC for U-Net1 was 96.8%, 95.3%, and 95.6% on train, validation, and test set, respectively, while the estimated accuracy for U-Net3 was 94.1%, 92.9%, and 93.9%. Both of the U-Nets achieved a median DSC of 0.95 for SAT segmentation. The U-Net1 and the U-Net3 achieved an optimal agreement with manual segmentation for the automatic segmentation. The so-developed neural networks have the potential to automatically segment thigh muscles and SAT in patients affected by MDs.

Leaf senescence is a complex trait which becomes crucial for grain filling because photoassimilates are translocated to the seeds. Therefore, a correct sync between leaf senescence and phenological stages is necessary to obtain increasing yields. In this study, we evaluated the performance of five deep machine-learning methods for the evaluation of the phenological stages of sunflowers using images taken with cell phones in the field. From the analysis, we found that the method based on the pre-trained network resnet50 outperformed the other methods, both in terms of accuracy and velocity. Finally, the model generated, Sunpheno, was used to evaluate the phenological stages of two contrasting lines, B481_6 and R453, during senescence. We observed clear differences in phenological stages, confirming the results obtained in previous studies. A database with 5000 images was generated and was classified by an expert. This is important to end the subjectivity involved in decision making regarding the progression of this trait in the field and could be correlated with performance and senescence parameters that are highly associated with yield increase.

Hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) and ventilation-associated pneumonia (VAP) are challenging clinical conditions due to the challenging tissue penetrability of the lung. This study aims to evaluate the potential role of fosfomycin (FOS) associated with ceftazidime/avibactam (CZA) in improving the outcome in this setting. We performed a retrospective study including people with HAP or VAP treated with CZA or CZA+FOS for at least 72 h. Clinical data were collected from the SUSANA study, a multicentric cohort to monitor the efficacy and safety of the newer antimicrobial agents. A total of 75 nosocomial pneumonia episodes were included in the analysis. Of these, 34 received CZA alone and 41 in combination with FOS (CZA+FOS). People treated with CZA alone were older, more frequently male, received a prolonged infusion more frequently, and were less frequently affected by carbapenem-resistant infections (p = 0.01, p = 0.06, p < 0.001, p = 0.03, respectively). No difference was found in terms of survival at 28 days from treatment start between CZA and CZA+FOS at the multivariate analysis (HR = 0.32; 95% CI = 0.07–1.39; p = 0.128), while prolonged infusion showed a lower mortality rate at 28 days (HR = 0.34; 95% CI = 0.14–0.96; p = 0.04). Regarding safety, three adverse events (one acute kidney failure, one multiorgan failure, and one urticaria) were reported. Our study found no significant association between combination therapy and mortality. Further investigations, with larger and more homogeneous samples, are needed to evaluate the role of combination therapy in this setting.

Aspergillus fumigatus is an environmental fungus recently included in the fungal high-priority pathogens by the World Health Organization. While immunodeficiency and/or pre-existing lung damage represent a well-recognized fertile ground for fungal growth, it is increasingly being recognized that severe viral infections may similarly favor A. fumigatus colonization and infection, as recently experienced in the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Herein, in a murine model of COVID-19-associated pulmonary aspergillosis (CAPA), obtained by the concomitant exposure to the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) Spike protein and A. fumigatus conidia, we found that the microbial compound indole-3-aldehyde (3-IAld) was able to ameliorate CAPA by working at multiple levels during viral infection and fungal superinfection, including epithelial barrier protection, promotion of antiviral responses, and limiting viral replication. As a consequence, 3-IAld limited the pathogenic sequelae of fungal superinfection as revealed by the controlled fungal burden and restrained inflammatory pathology. These results point to indole compounds as potential agents to prevent CAPA.

Somatosensory tactile experience is a key aspect of our interaction with the environment. It is involved in object manipulation, in the planning and control of actions and, in its affective components, in the relationships with other individuals. It is also a foundational component of body awareness. An intriguing aspect of sensory perception in general and tactile perception in particular is the way in which stimulation comes to consciousness. Indeed, although being aware of something seems a rather self-evident and monolithic aspect of our mental states, sensory awareness may be in fact modulated by many different processes that impact on the mere stimulation of the skin, including the way in which we perceive our bodies as belonging to us. In this review, we first took into consideration the pathological conditions of absence of phenomenal experience of touch, in the presence of implicit processing, as initial models for understanding the neural bases of conscious tactile experience. Subsequently, we discussed cases of tactile illusions both in normal subjects and in brain-damaged patients which help to understand which high-order processes impact tactile awareness. Finally, we discussed the observations reported in the review in light of some influential models of touch and body representation.

Through a comprehensive narrative review, this research uncovers a wealth of literature exploring the intersection between AR and medical imaging, highlighting its growing prominence in healthcare. AR’s integration offers a host of potential opportunities to enhance surgical precision, bolster patient engagement, and customize medical interventions. Moreover, when combined with technologies like virtual reality (VR), artificial intelligence (AI), and robotics, AR opens up new avenues for innovation in clinical practice, education, and training. However, amidst these promising prospects lie numerous unanswered questions and areas ripe for exploration. This study emphasizes the need for rigorous research to elucidate the clinical efficacy of AR-integrated interventions, optimize surgical workflows, and address technological challenges. As the healthcare landscape continues to evolve, sustained research efforts are crucial to fully realizing AR’s transformative impact in medical imaging. Systematic reviews on AR in healthcare also overlook regulatory and developmental factors, particularly in regard to medical devices. These include compliance with standards, safety regulations, risk management, clinical validation, and developmental processes. Addressing these aspects will provide a comprehensive understanding of the challenges and opportunities in integrating AR into clinical settings, informing stakeholders about crucial regulatory and developmental considerations for successful implementation. Moreover, navigating the regulatory approval process requires substantial financial resources and expertise, presenting barriers to entry for smaller innovators. Collaboration across disciplines and concerted efforts to overcome barriers will be essential in navigating this frontier and harnessing the potential of AR to revolutionize healthcare delivery.

Arrhythmic risk stratification in patients with Lamin A/C gene (LMNA)-related cardiomyopathy influences clinical decisions. An implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) should be considered in patients with an estimated 5-year risk of malignant ventricular arrhythmia (MVA) of ≥10%. The risk prediction score for MVA includes non-missense LMNA mutations, despite their role as an established risk factor for sudden cardiac death (SCD) has been questioned in several studies. The purpose of this study is to investigate cardiac features and find gene–phenotype correlations that would contribute to the evidence on the prognostic implications of non-missense vs. missense mutations in a cohort of LMNA mutant patients. An observational, prospective study was conducted in which 54 patients positive for a Lamin A/C mutation were enrolled, and 20 probands (37%) were included. The median age at first clinical manifestation was 41 (IQR 19) years. The median follow-up was 8 years (IQR 8). The type of LMNA gene mutation was distributed as follows: missense in 26 patients (48%), non-frameshift insertions in 16 (30%), frameshift deletions in 5 (9%), and nonsense in 7 (13%). Among the missense mutation carriers, two (8%) died and four (15%) were admitted onto the heart transplant list or underwent transplantation, with a major adverse cardiovascular event (MACE) rate of 35%. No statistically significant differences in MACE prevalence were identified according to the missense and non-missense mutation groups (p value = 0.847). Our data shift the spotlight on this considerable topic and could suggest that some missense mutations may deserve attention regarding SCD risk stratification in real-world clinical settings.

In this study, a new and very quick method to depolymerize PET plastics is reported. The depolymerization experiments were conducted using a type-IV deep eutectic solvent containing ZnCl2 and urea, and a microwave oven as reactor. Different combinations of power and reaction times were employed while keeping the total energy constant. Successful conversions were obtained carrying out the process at 180 W for 2 min and 360 W for 1 min, whereas at higher powers and shorter times, an inclusion likely occurs of some solvent into the structure of the recovered PET flakes, as suggested by the porosity of the flakes, imaged by SEM microscopy. The flakes increase their crystalline character during the treatment, as indicated by the appearance of narrow diffraction peaks in the XRD patterns, at variance with the broad signals observed in the case of the pristine amorphous polymer. The NMR analysis of the supernatant liquid above the partially solubilized PET shows the presence of terephthalic acid peaks. The infrared spectra of the solid powder achieved upon the acidic treatment of the extract reveal the presence of C=O stretching peaks and the absence of typical CH2 wagging absorptions that satisfactorily comply with the presence of terephthalic acid.

Mesenteric ischemia diagnosis is challenging, with an overall mortality of up to 50% of cases despite advances in treatment. The main problem that affects the outcome is delayed diagnosis because of non-specific clinical presentation. Multi-Detector CT Angiography (MDCTA) is the first-line investigation for the suspected diagnosis of vascular abdominal pathologies and the diagnostic test of choice in suspected mesenteric bowel ischemia. MDCTA can accurately detect the presence of arterial and venous thrombosis, determine the extent and the gastrointestinal tract involved, and provide detailed information determining the subtype and the stage progression of the diseases, helping clinicians and surgeons with appropriate management. CT (Computed Tomography) can differentiate forms that are still susceptible to pharmacological or interventional treatment (NOM = non-operative management) from advanced disease with transmural necrosis in which a surgical approach is required. Knowledge of CT imaging patterns and corresponding vascular pathways is mandatory in emergency settings to reach a prompt and accurate diagnosis. The aims of this paper are 1. to provide technical information about the optimal CTA (CT Angiography) protocol; 2. to explain the CTA arterial and venous supply to the gastrointestinal tract and the relevant ischemic pattern; and 3. to describe vascular, bowel, and extraintestinal CT findings for the diagnosis of acute mesenteric ischemia.

The constant attention to sustainability aimed at reconciling economic and social development with environmental protection is the driving force of the continuous growth of renewable energy in the energy sector. Among the numerous actions taken by the European Commission (EC) in this direction, an important initiative towards the complete decarbonization is represented by the Renewable Energy Communities (RECs). According to the EC, “energy communities enable collective and citizen-driven energy actions to support the clean energy transition. They can contribute to increasing public acceptance of renewable energy projects and make it easier to attract private investments in the clean energy transition”. At the European level, numerous energy communities are emerging, although they are all based on photovoltaic production and, consequently, focus only on electricity flows. The aim of this paper is to define a thermal energy community in which thermal energy sharing can be achieved by exploiting the concept of the smart district heating network. Starting from a small existing district heating network, its conversion into a smart one will be analyzed and optimized with the aim of studying the sharing of thermal energy between the various prosumer and non-prosumer users connected to the district heating network.

Kombucha is a trending tea fermented via a complex microflora of yeasts and acetic acid bacteria. It can be a valid low-calorie substitute for soft drinks due to its sour, naturally carbonated, and sweet taste. Despite increased interest, the microflora and functional properties of kombucha have not yet been fully understood. The aim of this work was to characterize, from a microbiological, chemico-physical, and functional point of view, three types of artisanal kombucha obtained by fermenting green tea containing sugar by means of different starter cultures. Metagenomic analysis revealed a predominance of yeasts compared to bacteria, regardless of the sample. In particular, Brettanomyces spp. was found to be the dominant yeast. Moreover, the different types of kombucha had different microbial patterns in terms of acetic acid bacteria and yeasts. Ethanol and acetic acid were the dominant volatile molecules of the kombucha volatilome; the samples differed from each other in terms of their content of alcohols, esters, and acids. All the samples showed a high antioxidant potential linked to the high content of phenols. This study confirmed the positive chemico-physical and functional properties of kombucha and indicated that the microflora responsible for the fermentation process can significantly affect the characteristics of the final product.

Even though Family and Community Nurses (FCNs) were introduced into the Italian healthcare system in 2000, to date, there is a substantial knowledge gap regarding the implementation of these professional figures within the Primary Care (PC) system. This scoping review aims to provide a comprehensive picture of the role of FCNs in managing older adults and the elderly with chronic conditions within the Italian PC system. A search on Medline, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Cochrane Library, Embase, and Scopus was conducted including studies published until 7 April 2023. Among 141 potential articles, only 4 met our inclusion criteria. Each of these studies attributed their findings to the presence of FCNs. They reported a significant decrease in the prevalence of several behaviours among patients diagnosed with hypertension, a reduction in metabolic complications among frail patients receiving home enteral nutrition, a decline in hospital readmissions or emergency services utilization among patients >65 years of ages with at least one chronic disease, and, notably, a high level of effectiveness in detecting major cardiovascular events in patients with cardiac implantable electronic devices. Despite the effectiveness of interventions managed by FCNs, comprehensive information and research on the integration of this role within the PC setting are still lacking in the Italian healthcare system.
