In the field of object detection, enhancing algorithm performance in complex scenarios represents a fundamental technological challenge. To address this issue, this paper presents an efficient optimized YOLOv8 model with extended vision (YOLO-EV), which optimizes the performance of the YOLOv8 model through a series of innovative improvement measures and strategies. First, we propose a multi-branch group-enhanced fusion attention (MGEFA) module and integrate it into YOLO-EV, which significantly boosts the model’s feature extraction capabilities. Second, we enhance the existing spatial pyramid pooling fast (SPPF) layer by integrating large scale kernel attention (LSKA), improving the model’s efficiency in processing spatial information. Additionally, we replace the traditional IOU loss function with the Wise-IOU loss function, thereby enhancing localization accuracy across various target sizes. We also introduce a P6 layer to augment the model’s detection capabilities for multi-scale targets. Through network structure optimization, we achieve higher computational efficiency, ensuring that YOLO-EV consumes fewer computational resources than YOLOv8s. In the validation section, preliminary tests on the VOC12 dataset demonstrate YOLO-EV’s effectiveness in standard object detection tasks. Moreover, YOLO-EV has been applied to the CottonWeedDet12 and CropWeed datasets, which are characterized by complex scenes, diverse weed morphologies, significant occlusions, and numerous small targets. Experimental results indicate that YOLO-EV exhibits superior detection accuracy in these complex agricultural environments compared to the original YOLOv8s and other state-of-the-art models, effectively identifying and locating various types of weeds, thus demonstrating its significant practical application potential.

The accurate estimation of soil plant analytical development (SPAD) values in cotton under various intercropping patterns with soybean is crucial for monitoring cotton growth and determining a suitable intercropping pattern. In this study, we utilized an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to capture visible (RGB) and multispectral (MS) data of cotton at the bud stage, early flowering stage, and full flowering stage in a cotton–soybean intercropping pattern in the Yellow River Delta region of China, and we used SPAD502 Plus and tapeline to collect SPAD and cotton plant height (CH) data of the cotton canopy, respectively. We analyzed the differences in cotton SPAD and CH under different intercropping ratio patterns. It was conducted using Pearson correlation analysis between the RGB features, MS features, and cotton SPAD, then the recursive feature elimination (RFE) method was employed to select image features. Seven feature sets including MS features (five vegetation indices + five texture features), RGB features (five vegetation indices + cotton cover), and CH, as well as combinations of these three types of features with each other, were established. Voting regression (VR) ensemble learning was proposed for estimating cotton SPAD and compared with the performances of three models: random forest regression (RFR), gradient boosting regression (GBR), and support vector regression (SVR). The optimal model was then used to estimate and visualize cotton SPAD under different intercropping patterns. The results were as follows: (1) There was little difference in the mean value of SPAD or CH under different intercropping patterns; a significant positive correlation existed between CH and SPAD throughout the entire growth period. (2) All VR models were optimal when each of the seven feature sets were used as input. When the features set was MS + RGB, the determination coefficient (R2) of the validation set of the VR model was 0.902, the root mean square error (RMSE) was 1.599, and the relative prediction deviation (RPD) was 3.24. (3) When the features set was CH + MS + RGB, the accuracy of the VR model was further improved, compared with the feature set MS + RGB, the R2 and RPD were increased by 1.55% and 8.95%, respectively, and the RMSE was decreased by 7.38%. (4) In the intercropping of cotton and soybean, cotton growing under 4:6 planting patterns was better. The results can provide a reference for the selection of intercropping patterns and the estimation of cotton SPAD.

To enhance agricultural productivity through the accurate detection of pests under the constrained resources of mobile devices, we introduce LP-YOLO, a bespoke lightweight object detection framework optimized for mobile-based insect pest identification. Initially, we devise lightweight components, namely LP_Unit and LP_DownSample, to serve as direct substitutes for the majority of modules within YOLOv8. Subsequently, we develop an innovative attention mechanism, denoted as ECSA (Efficient Channel and Spatial Attention), which is integrated into the network to forge LP-YOLO(l). Moreover, assessing the trade-offs between parameter reduction and computational efficiency, considering both the backbone and head components of the network, we use structured pruning methods for the pruning process, culminating in the creation of LP-YOLO(s). Through a comprehensive series of evaluations on the IP102 dataset, the efficacy of LP-YOLO as a lightweight object detection model is validated. By incorporating fine-tuning techniques during training, LP-YOLO(s)n demonstrates a marginal mAP decrease of only 0.8% compared to YOLOv8n. However, it achieves a significant reduction in parameter count by 70.2% and a remarkable 40.7% increase in FPS, underscoring its efficiency and performance.

The neuropeptide corazonin (Crz) exerts diverse physiological effects in insects, yet its role in crustaceans remains elusive. The abundant expression of Crz receptor (CrzR) in the Y-organs of several crustaceans suggests a potential involvement of Crz in regulating ecdysteroid synthesis. In this study, we examined the effects of PtCrz on ecdysteroid synthesis during the molting period of Portunus trituberculatus through PtCrz treatments and PtCrzR silencing. Our results showed that PtCrz peptide stimulates ecdysteroid levels and the gene expression involved in ecdysteroidogenesis both in vitro and in vivo, whereas dsPtCrzR treatments had opposite effects on ecdysteroid levels and associated gene expression. Thus, our study suggests that PtCrz may modulate ecdysteroid synthesis via Y-organ-expressed PtCrzR. Furthermore, we also discovered the involvement of PtCrz/PtCrzR signaling in regulating PtETH expression. Notably, the inhibitory effect of dsPtCrzR on ecdysteroid synthesis or PtETH expression can be reversed by PtCrz treatment, suggesting the potential existence of multiple receptors for PtCrz. This study provides new insights into the function of crustacean Crz and, for the first time, elucidates the presence of a neuropeptide that can stimulate ecdysteroid synthesis in crustaceans.

Rapeseed oil is a widely consumed edible oil that contains varieties of beneficial micronutrients such as tocopherols and phytosterols; however, the high acid value due to increased free fatty acid can imperil the oil quality and safety. This paper proposed the enzymatic deacidification for high-acid rapeseed oil and simultaneous production of functional diacylglycerols (DAGs) catalyzed by self-made immobilized lipase CALB@MCM-41-C8. The results indicate that the carrier of molecular sieve MCM-41 exhibited a sufficient surface area of 1439.9 m2/g and a proper pore size of 3.5 nm, promoting the immobilization of lipase CLAB. Under the optimal reaction conditions, the acid value of rapeseed oil was largely decreased from 15.3 mg KOH/g to 1.7 mg KOH/g within 3 h, while DAG content was increased from 1.2% to 40.2%. The antioxidant stability of rapeseed oil was also increased from 4.3 h to 7.6 h after enzymatic deacidification. Besides, the deacidified rapeseed oil exhibited fatty, bitter almond aromas, compared to the picked-vegetable, spicy, and pungent aromas for high-acid oil. Finally, the catalytic stability and applicability of CALB@MCM-41-C8 was validated, thus demonstrating the great potential of CALB@MCM-41-C8 in green refining of edible oils and sustainable synthesis of functional lipids.

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery presents significant advantages for observing ocean surface winds owing to its high spatial resolution and low sensitivity to extreme weather conditions. Nevertheless, signal noise poses a challenge, hindering precise wind retrieval from SAR imagery. Moreover, traditional geophysical model functions (GMFs) often falter, particularly in accurately estimating high wind speeds, notably during extreme weather phenomena like tropical cyclones (TCs). To address these limitations, this study proposes a novel hybrid model, CMOD-Diffusion, which integrates the strengths of GMFs with data-driven deep learning methods, thereby achieving enhanced accuracy and robustness in wind retrieval. Based on the coarse estimation of wind speed by the traditional GMF CMOD5.N, we introduce the recently developed data-driven method Denoising Diffusion Probabilistic Model (DDPM). It transforms an image from one domain to another domain by gradually adding Gaussian noise, thus achieving denoising and image synthesis. By introducing the DDPM, the noise from the observed normalized radar cross-section (NRCS) and the residual of the GMF methods can be largely compensated. Specifically, for wind speeds within the low-to-medium range, a DDPM is employed before proceeding to another CMOD iteration to recalibrate the observed NRCS. Conversely, a posterior-placed DDPM is applied after CMOD to reconstruct high-wind-speed regions or TC-affected areas, with the prior information from regions characterized by low wind speeds and recalibrated NRCS values. The efficacy of the proposed model is evaluated by using Sentinel-1 SAR imagery in vertical–vertical (VV) polarization, collocated with data from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). Experimental results based on validation sets demonstrate significant improvements over CMOD5.N, particularly in low-to-medium wind speed regions, with the Structural Similarity Index (SSIM) increasing from 0.76 to 0.98 and the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) decreasing from 1.98 to 0.63. Across the entire wind field, including regions with high wind speeds, the validation data obtained through the proposed method exhibit an RMSE of 2.39 m/s, with a correlation coefficient of 0.979.

Triadica sebifera is an important landscaping tree species because of its colorful autumn leaves. In recent years, some cultivars have been bred and licensed, but it can be difficult to identify them from their morphological traits due to their similar phenotypes. To explore the genetic relationships and construct a fingerprint of the cultivars, the licensed T. sebifera cultivars were analyzed using SSR markers. A total of 179 alleles were identified among the 21 cultivars at 16 SSR loci, and these alleles exhibited a high level of genetic diversity (He = 0.86). The genetic variations mainly occurred among cultivars based on an analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA). According to phylogenetic analysis, principal coordinate analysis (PCoA), and Bayesian clustering analysis, the genetic relationships were independent of geographic distances, which may be mainly due to transplantations between regions. Some cultivars with different leaf colors showed obvious genetic differentiation and may be preliminary candidates for cross-breeding. Finally, the fingerprint for the licensed cultivars was constructed with two SSR markers. The results of this study can provide technical support for the application and legal protection of licensed Triadica sebifera cultivars.

The exterior orientation parameters (EOPs) provided by the self-developed position and orientation system (POS) of the first Chinese airborne three-line scanner mapping system, AMS-3000, are impacted by jitter, resulting in waveform distortions in rectified images. This study introduces a Gaussian Markov EOP refinement method enhanced by cubic spline interpolation to mitigate stochastic jitter errors. Our method first projects tri-view images onto a mean elevation plane using POS-provided EOPs to generate Level 1 images for dense matching. Matched points are then back-projected to the original Level 0 images for the bundle adjustment based on the Gaussian Markov model. Finally, cubic spline interpolation is employed to obtain EOPs for lines without observations. Experimental comparisons with the piecewise polynomial model (PPM) and Lagrange interpolation model (LIM) demonstrate that our method outperformed these models in terms of geo-referencing accuracy, EOP refinement metric, and visual performance. Specifically, the line fitting accuracies of four linear features on Level 1 images were evaluated to assess EOP refinement performance. The refinement performance of our method showed improvements of 50%, 45.1%, 29.9%, and 44.6% over the LIM, and 12.9%, 69.2%, 69.6%, and 49.3% over the PPM. Additionally, our method exhibited the best visual performance on these linear features.

Rapid advances in technology have led to an increasing demand for this type of information in the field of cultural heritage and architectural conservation. The article aims to use digital technology to obtain, record, store, and display accurate and intuitive information about architectural heritage for daily management and repair of that heritage. This article conducts a comprehensive and in-depth study of the pathology information from the James Jackson Gymnasium, a typical case of the modern educational architectural heritage of Wuhan. Research contents include obtaining point cloud data through 3D scanning, constructing Building Information Modeling (BIM) 3D models and pathological information models to visualize the affected parts, using the Monument Damage Diagnostic System (MDDS) to establish a pathological information map management system, using virtual simulation technology and digital repair technology to diagnose and repair the affected parts, and establishing a systematic architectural pathology information database to explore the causes of architectural pathology from a multidisciplinary perspective. The authors aim to gradually promote this method and build a systematic pathological information database of architectural heritage. This utilizes the sharing characteristics of information technology to transcend the barriers of time and space and provide important support for heritage protection and pathology management. The Architectural Pathology Information Management System is proposed as an innovative solution to promote the sustainable conservation of architectural heritage through digital technology.

Nymphaea ‘Eldorado’, a valuable water lily, is a well-known fragrant plant in China. Studying the temporal and spatial characteristics of the floral components of this plant can provide a reference for the further development and utilization of water lily germplasm resources. In this study, headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) combined with gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was used to explore the types and relative contents of floral components at different flowering stages (S1: bud stage; S2: initial-flowering stage; S3: full-flowering stage; S4: end-flowering stage) and in different floral organs of N. ‘Elidorado’, combined with the observation of the microscopic structure of petals. A total of 60 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were detected at different flowering stages, and there were significant differences in floral VOCs at different flowering stages and in different flower organs. The volatile compounds of N. ‘Eldorado’ can be divided into seven chemical classes,, namely, alkenes, alcohols, esters, aldehydes, ketones, alkanes, and others; the most common were alkenes and alkanes. A total of 39, 44, 47, and 42 volatile compounds were detected at S1, S2, S3, and S4. The VOCs present in high concentrations include benzaldehyde, benzyl alcohol, benzyl acetate, trans-α-bergamotene, α-curcumene, cis-α-farnesene, and so on. The types and total contents of volatiles at the full-flowering stage were higher than at other flowering stages. Comparing the VOCs in different parts of flower organs, it was found that the contents of alcohols, esters, and aldehydes were greatest in the petals, the alkenes in stamens were abundant with a relative content of up to 54.93%, and alkanes in the pistil were higher than in other parts. The types and total contents of volatiles in the stamens of N. ‘Eldorado’ were higher than those in other flower organs; they were the main part releasing fragrance. The observation of petal microstructure revealed that the size and quantity of the papillae on the epidermises of petals, the number of intracellular plastids, and the aggregates of floral components (osmophilic matrix granules) were significantly higher at the full-flowering stage than at the other flowering stages. This study suggested the main flowering stage and location at which the floral VOCs are released by N. ‘Eldorado’ and provided a reference for guiding the breeding of this water lily, exploring genetic patterns and developing related products.

Nitrogen and brassinosteroids (BRs) play a vital role in modulating the growth, development, and yield of rice. However, the influences of BRs on nitrogen assimilation and metabolism in rice are not fully understood. In this study, we analyzed the impact of BRs on nitrogen utilization in rice using the indica variety ‘Zhongjiazao 17’ and the japonica variety ‘Nipponbare’ in hydroponic conditions. The results showed that BR treatment could efficiently elevate nitrate and ammonium nitrogen accumulation in both shoots and roots. Furthermore, some genes involved in the uptake of nitrate and ammonium in roots were stimulated by BRs, though we noted subtle variances between the two rice cultivars. Moreover, BRs augmented the activity of nitrate reductase (NR) and glutamine synthetase (GS) in roots, along with NR in shoots. Interestingly, BRs also spiked the total free amino acid content in both the shoots and roots. Gene expression analysis uncovered a robust induction by BRs of NR genes and GS-related genes in the roots of both ‘Nipponbare’ and ‘Zhongjiazao 17’. Collectively, our data suggest that BRs significantly enhance the accumulation of both nitrate and ammonium in rice and trigger a series of reactions related to nitrogen utilization.

Gastric cancer is ranked as the fifth most prevalent cancer globally and has long been a topic of passionate discussion among numerous individuals. However, the incidence of gastric cancer in society has not decreased, but instead has shown a gradual increase in recent years. For more than a decade, the treatment effect of gastric cancer has not been significantly improved. This is attributed to the heterogeneity of cancer, which makes popular targeted therapies ineffective. Methionine is an essential amino acid, and many studies have shown that it is involved in the development of gastric cancer. Our study aimed to review the literature on methionine and gastric cancer, describing its mechanism of action to show that tumor heterogeneity in gastric cancer does not hinder the effectiveness of methionine-restricted therapies. This research also aimed to provide insight into the inhibition of gastric cancer through metabolic reprogramming with methionine-restricted therapies, thereby demonstrating their potential as adjuvant treatments for gastric cancer.

In past years, optical lattices have been demonstrated as an excellent platform for making, understanding, and controlling quantum matters at nonlinear and fundamental quantum levels. Shrinking experimental observations include matter-wave gap solitons created in ultracold quantum degenerate gases, such as Bose–Einstein condensates with repulsive interaction. In this paper, we theoretically and numerically study the formation of one-dimensional gap soliton molecules and clusters in ultracold coherent atom ensembles under electromagnetically induced transparency conditions and trapped by an optical lattice. In numerics, both linear stability analysis and direct perturbed simulations are combined to identify the stability and instability of the localized gap modes, stressing the wide stability region within the first finite gap. The results predicted here may be confirmed in ultracold atom experiments, providing detailed insight into the higher-order localized gap modes of ultracold bosonic atoms under the quantum coherent effect called electromagnetically induced transparency.

The liver plays a vital role in metabolism, synthesis, and detoxification, but it is susceptible to damage from various factors such as viral infections, drug reactions, excessive alcohol consumption, and autoimmune diseases. This susceptibility is particularly problematic for patients requiring medication, as drug-induced liver injury often leads to underestimation, misdiagnosis, and difficulties in treatment. Acetaminophen (APAP) is a widely used and safe drug in therapeutic doses but can cause liver toxicity when taken in excessive amounts. This study aimed to investigate the hepatotoxicity of APAP and explore potential treatment strategies using a mouse model of APAP-induced liver injury. The study involved the evaluation of various natural products for their therapeutic potential. The findings revealed that natural products demonstrated promising hepatoprotective effects, potentially alleviating liver damage and improving liver function through various mechanisms such as oxidative stress and inflammation, which cause changes in signaling pathways. These results underscore the importance of exploring novel treatment options for drug-induced liver injury, suggesting that further research in this area could lead to the development of effective preventive and therapeutic interventions, ultimately benefiting patients with liver injury caused by medicine.

This paper examines the effects of thermo-solid coupling and the influence of braking parameter changes on the vibration characteristics of high-speed train disc brakes. A multi-flexible body dynamics model of high-speed train disc brakes considering thermo-solid coupling was established to study the vibration characteristics of high-speed train disc brakes during service. The results show that the uneven distribution of temperature and stress produced during the brake disc’s service was the primary cause of the warping deformation of the brake disc, which prevented the brake disc and the brake pads from making sufficient contact and caused vibration while braking. By comparing the analytical findings of whether the model was subject to the coupling effect or not, the influence of thermo-solid coupling on the braking procedure was demonstrated from the standpoint of energy distribution. The severity of the high-speed train brake disc vibration gradually increased along with the braking pressure and initial speed. In addition, vibration aggravated the instability of the braking process, which could lead to thermoelastic instability and is harmful to the braking performance of the brake. These findings provide theoretical support for designing and manufacturing disc brakes for high-speed trains.

Underground water-sealed oil storage caverns constructed in island environments is a promising approach for expanding oil storage caverns. However, few researchers have studied the risks of seawater intrusion and the distribution characteristics of intrusion interfaces in large underground water-sealed oil storage caverns in island environments. In this paper, we established a visualized physical simulation platform to investigate the characteristics and control measures of seawater intrusion in single fracture of rock masses within island underground water-sealed oil storage caverns. In addition, the effects of the excavation of caverns, the distance between the cavern and coast, fracture width, seawater level, oil storage stage, water curtain, and water injection pressure were evaluated. The results show that excavation of oil storage caverns carries the risk of seawater intrusion. Specifically, reducing the distance between the oil storage caverns and the coast, increasing the fracture width, and raising the seawater level all contribute to accelerated seawater intrusion into the caverns. However, the vertical water curtain can effectively inhibit seawater intrusion, and increasing the injection pressure of vertical water curtain can avoid the risk of seawater intrusion into the caverns. The research results provide an experimental basis for the study of seawater intrusion in underground oil storage caverns in island environments.

There is an urgent need to realize precise clinical ultrasound with ultrasound contrast agents that provide high echo intensity and mechanical index tolerance. Graphene derivatives possess exceptional characteristics, exhibiting great potential in fabricating ideal ultrasound contrast agents. Herein, we reported a facile and green approach to synthesizing reduced graphene oxide with ellagic acid (rGO-EA). To investigate the application of a graphene derivative in ultrasound contrast agents, rGO-EA was dispersed in saline solution and mixed with SonoVue (SV) to fabricate SV@rGO-EA microbubbles. To determine the properties of the product, analyses were performed, including ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy (UV–vis), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray photoelectron spectrum (XPS), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) and zeta potential analysis. Additionally, cell viability measurements and a hemolysis assay were conducted for a biosafety evaluation. SV@rGO-EA microbubbles were scanned at various mechanical index values to obtain the B-mode and contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) mode images in vitro. SV@rGO-EA microbubbles were administered to SD rats, and their livers and kidneys were imaged in CEUS and B-mode. The absorption of rGO-EA resulted in an enhanced echo intensity and mechanical index tolerance of SV@rGO-EA, surpassing the performance of SV microbubbles both in vitro and in vivo. This work exhibited the application potential of graphene derivatives in the field of ultrasound precision medicine.

MADS-box transcription factors play important roles in many organisms. These transcription factors are involved in processes such as the formation of the flower organ structure and the seed development of plants. Ginkgo biloba has two genome versions (version 2019 and version 2021), and there is no analysis or comparison of the MADS-box gene family in these two genomes. In this study, 26 and 20 MADS-box genes were identified from the two genomes of Ginkgo, of which 12 pairs of genes reached more than 80% similarity. According to our phylogenetic analysis results, we divided these genes into type I (Mα and Mγ subfamilies) and type II (MIKC and Mδ subfamilies) members. We found that both sets of genomes lacked the Mβ gene, while the MIKC gene was the most numerous. Further analysis of the gene structure showed that the MIKC genes in the two genomes had extralong introns (≥20 kb); these introns had different splicing patterns, and their expression might be more abundant. The gene expression analysis proved that GbMADS genes were expressed to varying degrees in eight Ginkgo biological tissues. Type II GbMADS genes not only were found to be related to female flower bud differentiation and development but also are important in seed development. Therefore, MADS-box genes may play important roles in the development of Ginkgo reproductive organs, which may suggest a genetic role in sexual differentiation. This study further contributes to the research on MADS-box genes and provides new insights into sex determination in Ginkgo.

Grapes, an important and widespread fruit crop providing multiple products, face increasing flooding risks due to intense and frequent extreme rainfall. It is thus imperative to fully understand the flood-tolerance mechanisms of grapevines. Here, RNA-seq and LC-MS/MS technologies were used to analyze the transcriptome and metabolome changes in the roots of SO4 (tolerant to flooding) and Kyoho (sensitive to flooding) grapes under flooding and post-flooding conditions. The results showed that the abundance of many metabolites in the phenylpropanoids and polyketides, organic acids and their derivatives, and organic oxygen compounds superclasses changed in different patterns between the Kyoho and SO4 grapes under flooding and post-flooding conditions. Jasmonic acid and the ascorbic acid–glutathione cycle played a pivotal role in coping with both hypoxia stress and reoxygenation stress incurred during flooding and post-flooding treatments in the SO4 cultivar. Under flooding stress, the regulatory mechanistic shift from aerobic respiration to anaerobic fermentation under hypoxia is partly missing in the Kyoho cultivar. In the post-flooding stage, many genes related to ethylene, gibberellins, cytokinins, and brassinosteroids biosynthesis and brassinosteroids-responsive genes were significantly downregulated in the Kyoho cultivar, adversely affecting growth recovery; however, their expression was not reduced in the SO4 cultivar. These findings enhance our understanding of the flooding-tolerance mechanisms in grapes.

Rural revolutionary heritage in China represents a distinctive form of vernacular heritage. It holds significance not only for its connection to historical events and prominent figures, but also encapsulates the distinctive features of vernacular architecture. Since 2020, the present authors have conducted a survey of the rural revolutionary heritage in Jinan. The findings indicate that common challenges in this context are the issues of overprotection and low utilization efficiency. The two former command posts of the Jinan Campaign are representative of rural revolutionary heritage. The Yinjiadian command post building received the designation of revolutionary heritage earlier than the one located in Tangjiagou Village. However, it has undergone inappropriate repairs and alterations over time, which have compromised its original integrity. The Tangjiagou command post was granted heritage status towards the end of 2020, but despite retaining its vernacular architectural structure, material, and form, it has not been effectively conserved and utilized. In the present study, the history, characteristics, and current situation of the two command posts of the Jinan Campaign were explored using various methods such as historical data collection and analysis, field investigations, oral interviews, GIS analysis, and comparative research. The aim of the study was to determine regeneration strategies for the two command posts of the Jinan Campaign by identifying and comparing their character-defining elements. A comparative investigation of the two command posts in the Jinan Campaign was conducted and based on their different heritage characteristics and preservation status, regeneration strategies were proposed. Additionally, a systematic regeneration strategy for rural revolutionary heritage was explored, considering the unique challenges and opportunities associated with preserving and revitalizing these historic sites. Such measures promote the activation and survival of China’s rural revolutionary heritage while providing valuable reference for its protection and research.

Milk is one of the preferred beverages in modern healthy diets, and its freshness is of great significance for product sales and applications. By combining the two-dimensional (2D) correlation spectroscopy technique and chemometrics, a new method based on visible/near-infrared (Vis/NIR) spectroscopy was proposed to discriminate the freshness of milk. To clarify the relationship be-tween the freshness of milk and the spectra, the changes in the physicochemical indicators of milk during storage were analyzed as well as the Vis/NIR spectra and the 2D-Vis/NIR correlation spectra. The threshold-value method, linear discriminant analysis (LDA) method, and support vector machine (SVM) method were used to construct the discriminant models of milk freshness, and the parameters of the SVM-based models were optimized by the grid search method and particle swarm optimization algorithm. The results showed that with the prolongation of storage time, the absorbance of the Vis/NIR spectra of milk gradually increased, and the intensity of autocorrelation peaks and cross peaks in synchronous 2D-Vis/NIR spectra also increased significantly. Compared with the SVM-based models using Vis/NIR spectra, the SVM-based model using 2D-Vis/NIR spectra had a >15% higher prediction accuracy. Under the same conditions, the prediction performances of the SVM-based models were better than those of the threshold-value-based or LDA-based models. In addition, the accuracy rate of the SVM-based model using the synchronous 2D-Vis/NIR autocorrelation spectra was >97%. This work indicates that the 2D-Vis/NIR correlation spectra coupled with chemometrics is a great pattern to rapidly discriminate the freshness of milk, which provides technical support for improving the evaluation system of milk quality and maintaining the safety of milk product quality.

Ginling College is the first women’s college founded by the American Christian Church in Nanjing, China, in the early 20th century. The architectural style of the school reflects the orientation of the “Chinese localization” of the Christian Church at that time. It is a representative work of the revival of traditional Chinese architecture. It is known as a “Renaissance of Chinese traditional architecture” and profoundly influenced later generations. Due to its important historical status and artistic value, the Ginling College complex has been designated by the Chinese government as a national key cultural relic protection unit and China’s 20th-century architectural heritage, and the protection scope of the Ginling College historical district has been specially designated for overall protection. Currently, little research has been conducted on this historic area, so the authors undertook this project. This paper adopts a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods for research, starting from the two aspects of architectural art and sustainable design, and analyzes in detail the artistic characteristics of the project, the structural materials obtained locally, and the sustainable design method that utilizes natural lighting and ventilation to explore a modern campus design method based on the concept of sustainable design with a “combination of Chinese and Western architectural art”. Through artistic creation and technological innovation, traditional Chinese revival architecture has realized a harmonious coexistence between man and nature, embodying the design concept of sustainable development, and promoting the development of architecture and the region.

As a “living fossil”, ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba L.) has significant ornamental, medicinal, and timber value. However, the breeding improvement of ginkgo was limited by the lack of enough excellent germplasms and suitable molecular markers. Here, we characterized numerous polymorphic insertion/deletion (InDel) markers using RAD-seq in 12 different ginkgo cultivars. The total of 279,534 InDels identified were unequally distributed across 12 chromosomes in the ginkgo genome. Of these, 52.56% (146,919) and 47.44% (132,615) were attributed to insertions and deletions, respectively. After random selection and validation, 26 pairs of polymorphic primers were used for molecular diversity analysis in 87 ginkgo cultivars and clones. The average values of observed heterozygosity and polymorphism information were 0.625 and 0.517, respectively. The results of population structure analyses were similar to those of neighbor-joining and principal component analyses, which divided all germplasms into two distinct groups. Moreover, 11 ginkgo core collections accounted for approximately 12.64% of the total ginkgo germplasms obtained, representing well the allelic diversity of all original germplasms. Therefore, these InDels can be used for germplasm management and genetic diversity analyses in ginkgo and the core collections will be used effectively for ginkgo genetic improvement.

Low temperatures have seriously affected crop growth owing to climate change and frequent extreme weather. Low-temperature disasters easily affect the early-growth stages of planted soybeans in Northeast China. In the present study, the comprehensive evaluation method using low-temperature (4 °C) simulation at soybean germination and seedling stages was used to compare soybean cultivars. The results revealed that low temperatures inhibited the germination ability of soybean seeds and prolonged the average germination time (about 7–13 days under low temperatures). Simultaneously, low-temperature stress at the seedling stage decreased plant height and dry weight, but accumulated proline and soluble sugar. The soluble protein content of most cultivars decreased at low temperatures. Peroxidase activity was significantly decreased in henong70, suinong82, and heinong83, and opposite in the other cultivars. Additionally, MDA content increased in cultivars heinong69, dongnong42, and dongnong55. The final comprehensive evaluation showed that Suinong42 had better low-temperature tolerance, whereas Kendou40 was more sensitive to low temperatures. The grey correlation analysis also showed that dry weight and proline can be used as the target traits for cultivar improvement.

Ocean Island data are essential to the conservation and management of islands and coastal ecosystems, and have also been adopted by the United Nations as a sustainable development goal (SDG 14). Currently, two categories of island datasets, i.e., global shoreline vector (GSV) and OpenStreetMap (OSM), are freely available on a global scale. However, few studies have focused on accessing and comparing the data quality of these two datasets, which is the main purpose of our study. Specifically, these two datasets were accessed using four 100 × 100 (km2) study areas, in terms of three aspects of measures, i.e., accuracy (including overall accuracy (OA), precision, recall and F1), completeness (including area completeness and count completeness) and shape complexity. The results showed that: (1) Both the two datasets perform well in terms of the OA (98% or above) and F1 (0.9 or above); the OSM dataset performs better in terms of precision, but the GSV dataset performs better in terms of recall. (2) The area completeness is almost 100%, but the count completeness is much higher than 100%, indicating the total areas of the two datasets are almost the same, but there are many more islands in the OSM dataset. (3) In most cases, the fractal dimension of the OSM dataset is relatively larger than the GSV dataset in terms of the shape complexity, indicating that the OSM dataset has more detail in terms of the island boundary or coastline. We concluded that both of the datasets (GSV and OSM) are effective for island mapping, but the OSM dataset can identify more small islands and has more detail.

Nitric oxide (NO) plays a significant role in plant drought resistance. However, the effects of the exogenous application of NO to crops under drought stress vary within and among species. In this study, we explored the influence of exogenous sodium nitroprusside (SNP) on the drought resistance of soybean leaves in the full flowering stage using two varieties: drought-tolerant HN44 and non-drought-tolerant HN65. Spraying SNP on soybean leaves at the full flowering period under drought stress improved the NO content in soybean leaves. The activities of nitrite reductase (NiR) and nitrate reductase (NR) in leaves were affected by NO inhibition. The activity of antioxidant enzymes in leaves increased with the extension of SNP application time. Contents of osmomodulatory substances, including proline (Pro), soluble sugar (SS), and soluble protein (SP) increased gradually with the extension of SNP application time. The malondialdehyde (MDA) content decreased as the NO content increased, thus reducing membrane system damage. Overall, spraying SNP reduced damage and improved the ability of soybean to cope with drought. This study explored the physiological changes of SNP soybean under drought stress and provided theoretical basis for improving drought-resistant cultivation of soybean.

Phosphorus-solubilizing microorganisms release organic acids that can chelate mineral ions or reduce the pH to solubilize insoluble phosphates for use by plants; it is important to study potential phosphorus-solubilizing microorganisms for use in agriculture. In this study, PSF7 was isolated from the soil of the Wengfu Phosphorus Tailings Dump in Fuquan City, Guizhou Province, China. PSF7 was identified as Paecilomyces lilacinus, based on morphological characterization and ITS sequencing analysis. The relationship between the phosphorus-solubilizing capacity and pH variation of PSF7 under liquid fermentation was studied. The results showed that there was a significant negative correlation (−0.784) between the soluble phosphorus content of PSF7 and the pH value. When PSF7 was placed under low phosphorus stress, eight organic acids were determined from fermentation broth using HPLC, of which tartaric acid and formic acid were the main organic acids. Different optimization parameters of medium components were analyzed using response surface methodology. The optimized medium components were 23.50 g/L sucrose, 1.64 g/L ammonium sulfate and soybean residue, 1.07 g/L inorganic salts, and 9.16 g/L tricalcium phosphate, with a predicted soluble phosphorus content of 123.89 mg/L. Under the optimum medium composition, the actual phosphorus-solubilizing content of PSF7 reached 122.17 mg/L. Moreover, scanning electron microscopy analysis of the sample was carried out to characterize the phosphate-solubilizing efficiency of PSF7 on mineral phosphate. The results provide useful information for the future application of PSF7 as a biological fertilizer.

The bell tower of Nanking University, built in 1888, is a milestone of modern educational architecture in Nanjing. It fully introduced Western architectural concepts and is an important historical witness to the cultural exchange between China and the West. At present, there are few studies on the conservation and reuse of the building, so the authors conducted the project. In this paper, we conducted research by combining qualitative and quantitative methods. The qualitative analysis includes analyses of historical maps, photos, text, surveys, mapping of buildings, and a comparative analysis. The quantitative analysis includes statistics on the distribution of the urban school architectural heritage, the number of buildings at Nanking University, and China’s school building design standards. Through the historical research and value analysis of the building, we explore its real information from the aspects of architectural style, space, structure, material, and construction technology, and propose a reasonable conservation method. According to the current urban planning policy and architectural heritage data, the functional upgrading and renovation of the building will be carried out. This paper explores authenticity and integrity-based restoration methods, as well as the adaptive-reuse strategy for China’s architectural heritage, which can provide a paradigm for regional development and historic campus renewal.

Formic acid is a common chemical raw material, the effective detection of which is of importance to food safety and environmental quality. In this work, the lanthanide functionalized dual-emission metal-organic framework (TH25) was prepared as a ratiometric fluorescent sensor for formic acid. This ratiometric sensor has a good detection performance with high selectivity, sensitivity, and reproducibility. Together with a low limit of detection of 2.1 ppm, these characters promise the ability to sense at low levels as well as a practical detection ability. This work provides ideas for the design and synthesis of effective chemical sensors for organic acids.

To provide a strategy for improving the stability of rice bran protein emulsion (RBPE), rice bran proteins (RBPs) with different oxidation extents were prepared from fresh rice bran (RB) stored for different times (0, 1, 3, 5, 10 d), and RBPE was prepared with ultrasonic treatment. The ultrasonic conditions were optimized according to the results of the RBPE’s stability (when RB stored for 0, 1, 3, 5, 10 d, the optimal ultrasonic treatment conditions of RBPE were 500 w and 50 min, 400 w and 30 min, 400 w and 30 min, 300 w and 20 min, 500 w and 50 min, respectively). Additionally, the structural characteristics and the flexibility of RBPE interface protein were characterized, and the results showed that compared with native protein and excessive oxidized protein, the unfolded structure content and flexibility of interface protein of RBPE prepared by moderate oxidized protein under optimal ultrasonic intensity was higher. Furthermore, the correlation analysis showed that the RBPE stability was significantly correlated with the structural characteristics and flexibility of the RBPE interface protein (p < 0.05). In summary, ultrasonic treatment affected the interface protein’s structural characteristics and flexibility, improving the stability of RBPE prepared from oxidized RBP.

Six new citreoviridins (citreoviridins J–O, 1–6) and twenty-two known compounds (7–28) were isolated from the deep-sea-derived Penicillium citreonigrum MCCC 3A00169. The structures of the new compounds were determined by spectroscopic methods, including the HRESIMS, NMR, ECD calculations, and dimolybdenum tetraacetate-induced CD (ICD) experiments. Citreoviridins J−O (1–6) are diastereomers of 6,7-epoxycitreoviridin with different chiral centers at C-2–C-7. Pyrenocine A (7), terrein (14), and citreoviridin (20) significantly induced apoptosis for HeLa cells with IC50 values of 5.4 μM, 11.3 μM, and 0.7 μM, respectively. To be specific, pyrenocine A could induce S phase arrest, while terrein and citreoviridin could obviously induce G0-G1 phase arrest. Citreoviridin could inhibit mTOR activity in HeLa cells.

Both DHA and astaxanthin, with multiple conjugated double bonds, are considered as health-promoting molecules. However, their utilizations into food systems are restricted due to their poor water solubility and high oxidizability, plus their certain off-smell. In this study, the interactions between perilla protein isolate (PPI) and flaxseed gum (FG) were firstly investigated using multiple spectroscopies, suggesting that hydrophobic, electrostatic force and hydrogen bonds played important roles. Additionally, double-layer emulsion was constructed by layer-by-layer deposition technology and exhibited preferable effects on masking the fishy smell of algae oil. Calcium ions also showed an improving effect on the elasticity modulus of O/W emulsions and was managed to significantly protect the stability of co-delivered astaxanthin and DHA, without additional antioxidants during storage for 21 days. The vegan system produced in this study may, therefore, be suitable for effective delivery of both ω-3 fatty acid and carotenoids for their further incorporation into food systems, such as plant-based yoghourt, etc.

The advancement of deep learning (DL) technology and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) remote sensing has made it feasible to monitor coastal wetlands efficiently and precisely. However, studies have rarely compared the performance of DL with traditional machine learning (Pixel-Based (PB) and Object-Based Image Analysis (OBIA) methods) in UAV-based coastal wetland monitoring. We constructed a dataset based on RGB-based UAV data and compared the performance of PB, OBIA, and DL methods in the classification of vegetation communities in coastal wetlands. In addition, to our knowledge, the OBIA method was used for the UAV data for the first time in this paper based on Google Earth Engine (GEE), and the ability of GEE to process UAV data was confirmed. The results showed that in comparison with the PB and OBIA methods, the DL method achieved the most promising classification results, which was capable of reflecting the realistic distribution of the vegetation. Furthermore, the paradigm shifts from PB and OBIA to the DL method in terms of feature engineering, training methods, and reference data explained the considerable results achieved by the DL method. The results suggested that a combination of UAV, DL, and cloud computing platforms can facilitate long-term, accurate monitoring of coastal wetland vegetation at the local scale.

Blue spaces (or water bodies) have a positive impact on the built-up environment and human health. Various open and high-resolution land-use/land-cover (LULC) datasets may be used for mapping blue space, but they have rarely been quantitatively evaluated and compared. Moreover, few studies have investigated whether existing 10-m-resolution LULC datasets can identify water bodies with widths as narrow as 10 m. To fill these gaps, this study evaluates and compares four LULC datasets (ESRI, ESA, FROM-GLC10, OSM) for blue space mapping in Great Britain. First, a buffer approach is proposed for the extraction of water bodies of different widths from a reference dataset. This approach is applied to each LULC dataset, and the results are compared in terms of accuracy, precision, recall, and the F1-score. We find that a high median accuracy (i.e., >98%) is achieved with all four LULC datasets. The OSM dataset gives the best recall and F1-score. Both the ESRI and ESA datasets produce better results than the FORM-GLC10 dataset. Additionally, the OSM dataset enables the identification of water bodies with widths of 10 m, whereas only water bodies with widths of 20 m or more can be identified in the other datasets. These findings may be beneficial for urban planners and designers in selecting an appropriate LULC dataset for blue space mapping.

This study illustrates a type of novel device. Integrating fin field-effect transistors (FinFETs) with current silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafers provides an excellent platform to fabricate advanced specific devices. An SOI FinFET device consists of three independent gates. By connecting the various gates, multiple working modes are obtained. Compared with traditional FinFETs, the multi-enhanced operation gate fin field-effect transistor in this study combines independent gates by connecting the selection modes; thus, a possible operation can be performed to attain a FinFET with five equivalent working states in only one device. This novel function can enable the device to work with multiple specific voltages and currents by connecting the corresponding gate combinations, augmenting the integrated degrees and shifting the working modes, thereby meeting the different needs of high-speed, low-power, and other potential applications. Further, the potential applications are highlighted.

Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are endogenous, non-coding RNAs, which are derived from host genes that are present in several species and can be involved in the progression of various diseases. circRNAs’ leading role is to act as RNA sponges. In recent years, the other roles of circRNAs have been discovered, such as regulating transcription and translation, regulating host genes, and even being translated into proteins. As some tumor cells are no longer radiosensitive, tumor radioresistance has since become a challenge in treating tumors. In recent years, circRNAs are differentially expressed in tumor cells and can be used as biological markers of tumors. In addition, circRNAs can regulate the radiosensitivity of tumors. Here, we list the mechanisms of circRNAs in glioma, nasopharyngeal carcinoma, and non-small cell lung cancer; further, these studies also provide new ideas for the purposes of eliminating radioresistance in tumors.

Background: The lack of a stable source of hepatocytes is one of major limitations in hepatocyte transplantation and clinical applications of a bioartificial liver. Human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) with a high degree of self-renewal and totipotency are a potentially limitless source of a variety of cell lineages, including hepatocytes. Many techniques have been developed for effective differentiation of hESCs into functional hepatocyte-like cells. However, the application of hESC-derived hepatocyte-like cells (hESC-Heps) in the clinic has been constrained by the low yield of fully differentiated cells, small-scale culture, difficulties in harvesting, and immunologic graft rejection. To resolve these shortcomings, we developed a novel 3D differentiation system involving alginate-microencapsulated spheres to improve current hepatic differentiation, providing ready-to-use hESC-Heps. Methods: In this study, we used alginate microencapsulation technology to differentiate human embryonic stem cells into hepatocyte-like cells (hESC-Heps). Hepatic markers of hESC-Heps were examined by qPCR and Western blotting, and hepatic functions of hESC-Heps were evaluated by indocyanine-green uptake and release, and ammonia removal. Results: The maturity and hepatic functions of the hESC-Heps derived from this 3D system were better than those derived from 2D culture. Hepatocyte-enriched genes, such as HNF4α, AFP, and ALB, were expressed at higher levels in 3D hESC-Heps than in 2D hESC-Heps. 3D hESC-Heps could metabolize indocyanine green and had better capacity to scavenge ammonia. In addition, the 3D sodium alginate hydrogel microspheres could block viral entry into the microspheres, and thus protect hESC-Heps in 3D microspheres from viral infection. Conclusion: We developed a novel 3D differentiation system for differentiating hESCs into hepatocyte-like cells by using alginate microcapsules.

Seed vigor is an important agronomic trait, and wide variation exists among peanut accessions. However, the detailed regulatory mechanisms underlying differences in seed vigor between varieties are not known in peanut yet. Here, we performed a comparative transcriptome analysis of germinating seeds in two contrasting peanut accessions, namely A86 (high-vigor variety) and A279 (low-vigor variety). A total of 583 and 860 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified at two imbibition stages between A86 and A279, respectively. Pathway enrichment tests highlighted the cell wall remodeling-, hormone signaling-, transcriptional regulation-, and oxidative stress-related DEGs, which may explain to a certain extent the difference in seed vigor between the two cultivars. Among them, the largest number of cell wall remodeling-related DEGs were extensions followed by cellulose synthases, fasciclin-like arabinogalactan proteins, polygalacturonases, expansins, and pectinesterases and the hormone signaling-related DEGs belonged mainly to the auxin and ethylene signaling pathway. The majority of transcriptional regulation-related DEGs were MYB, FAR1, and bHLH transcription factors, and the oxidative stress-related DEGs were mainly peroxidases. Further physiological analyses indicated that differences in seed vigor between A86 and A279 may be associated with differences in the ROS-scavenging abilities mediated by peroxidases. Moreover, we identified 16 DEGs homologous to known Arabidopsis regulators of seed dormancy and germination, suggesting that these DEGs would play similar functional roles during peanut seed germination. Our results not only provide important insights into the difference in seed vigor between varieties, but offer candidate genes that are worth investigating in future studies.

This paper focuses on urban regeneration practices in central urban areas, aiming to find key points for reshaping the publicness of urban spaces by exploring the morphological features of public spaces and the spatial distribution patterns of public activities. Now that China’s urbanization process has stabilized, large-scale regeneration is no longer applicable to the current urban environment, and urban morphology has proved to be significantly useful in understanding and designing the built environment. However, current research lacks quantitative studies on morphology and public activities, and thus is hardly instructive for the cognition and design of spatial morphology in specific locations. Therefore, this paper attempts to subdivide spatial morphology at the level of “micro-renewal” or “micro-renovation” in order to explore the impact of spatial morphology on public participation in cities. The site chosen for this study is Xinjiekou in Nanjing. As a key area of two important arteries in the center of Nanjing, Xinjiekou has been a gathering place for a variety of commercial forms, such as finance, retail department stores, restaurants, and entertainment, and has been the commercial and financial center of Nanjing since the 1940s. In an on-site observation of urban development and pedestrian flow in the Xinjiekou area, the study found that despite its status as the area with the highest degree of spatial accessibility and public participation, its public space has gradually lost its attractiveness to residents, who lack a sense of participation and place identity. Based on the study of urban public spaces, both accessibility and choice play an important role in increasing public participation. Therefore, this study combined observation and quantitative analysis of Space Syntax to obtain the distribution of accessibility, choice, and public activity. Based on the results of the analysis, this research uses GWR as the statistical method to clarify the correlation between different variables. The final conclusion is that when the space type is a path with high choice value and the paths are connected, the enhancement of accessibility and choice plays an important role in promoting public participation. This statistically based empirical study of testable correlations is very helpful for the perception of location-specific spaces with high levels of interpretability and confidence. Thus, it further guides the design and has a high reference value for future spatial planning.

The vibration energy distribution pattern usually changes with the rotating machine’s health state and is a good indicator for intelligent fault diagnosis (IFD). The existing initial features such as RMS are less effective in revealing the vibration energy distribution pattern, and the frequency spectrum cannot provide a rich and hierarchical description of the vibration energy distribution pattern. Addressing this issue, we proposed a multi-scale frequency energy distribution (MSFED) feature for the IFD of rotating machines. The MSFED feature can reveal the vibration energy distribution patterns in the frequency domain in a multi-scale manner, and its one-dimensional vector and two-dimensional map formats make it usable for most IFD models. Experimental validation on the gearbox and bearing datasets verified that the MSFED feature achieved the highest diagnostic accuracy among commonly used initial features, in typical fault diagnosis scenarios except for the variable-load scenario. Furthermore, the separability and transferability of the MSFED feature were evaluated by distance-based metrics, and the results were in agreement with the features’ diagnostic performance. This work provides an important reference for the IFD of rotating machines, not only proposing a novel MSFED feature but also opening a new avenue for model-independent methods of the initial quality evaluation.

This study aimed to explore the effects and mechanisms of differently shaped aggregates of ovotransferrin (OVT) particles on oleogel-based Pickering emulsions (OPEs). Medium-chain triglyceride oil-based oleogels were constructed using beeswax, and their gel-sol melting temperatures were investigated. Atomic force microscopy confirmed that both OVT fibrils and OVT spheres were successfully prepared, and the three-phase contact angle measurements indicated that fibrous and spherical aggregates of OVT particles possessed great potential to stabilize the OPEs. Afterward, the oil-in-water OPEs were fabricated using oleogel as the oil phase and OVT fibrils/spheres as the emulsifiers. The results revealed that OPEs stabilized with OVT fibrils (FIB-OPEs) presented a higher degree of emulsification, smaller droplet size, better physical stability and stronger apparent viscosity compared with OPEs stabilized with OVT spheres (SPH-OPEs). The freeze–thaw stability test showed that the FIB-OPEs remained stable after three freeze–thaw cycles, while the SPH-OPEs could barely withstand one freeze–thaw cycle. An in vitro digestion study suggested that OVT fibrils conferred distinctly higher lipolysis (46.0%) and bioaccessibility (62.8%) of curcumin to OPEs.

Drought affects crop developmentnand growth. To explore the physiological effects of drought stress on soybean, HeiNong44 (HN44) and HeiNong65 (HN65) varieties were used as experimental materials and PEG-6000 was used as the osmotic medium. The antioxidant enzyme activity, osmotic adjustment substance content, antioxidant capacity, and endogenous hormone content of the two soybean varieties were studied under different drought degrees and different treatment durations. Drought stress caused significant physiological changes in soybean. The antioxidant enzyme activities, osmoregulation substance content, and total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) of HN65 and HN44 showed an increasing trend under mild and moderate drought, however, they first increased and then decreased under severe drought conditions. Following the extension of treatment time, malondialdehyde (MDA) showed an increasing trend. As drought increased, gibberellin (GA) content showed a decreasing trend, while abscisic acid (ABA), salicylic acid (SA), and zeatin nucleoside (ZA) content showed an increasing trend. The auxin (IAA) content of the two varieties showed opposite change trends. In short, drought had a significant impact on the physiology of these two soybean varieties; however, overall, the drought resistance of HN65 was lower than that of HN44. This study provides a research theoretical basis for addressing the drought resistance mechanism and the breeding of drought resistant soybean varieties.

The Qingdao Exchange Building, built in the 1920s, is the largest products and stock exchange building in modern Shandong. In addition to being a historical witness to the economic development of Qingdao over the last 100 years, it has also been a historical scene of cultural exchanges between China and the West after the opening up of China in the early 20th century. After several changes in the building’s property rights, the building was out of use for a long period of time, with a large number of materials and structures being damaged. The present authors participated in a feasibility study project on the conservation and restoration of the Qingdao Exchange Building. The objective of the present study was achieved through several qualitative methods, including the collection and analysis of historical files, analysis of historical maps and photos, investigation and research of historical information, comparative analysis, and others. Through the value research and technical analysis of the Qingdao Exchange Building, the historical, artistic, and scientific values of architectural heritage were investigated in the present study, and rehabilitation strategies and methods were explored. Additionally, the spread of certain characteristics of Western architectural culture in China in the early modern times was investigated based on the present case.

Understanding urban form is beneficial for planners and designers to improve the built environment. The street network, as an essential element of urban form, has received much attention from existing studies. Recently, an open dataset containing 8910 global urban street networks and 25 different form indicators has been produced, but the urban forms of cities across the globe have rarely been recognized based on analyzing such a large dataset, which was the main purpose of our study. We employed correlation analysis, principal component analysis and hierarchical clustering methods for analyzing this dataset. We also compared the spatial pattern of clustering results with those using terrain and land-cover data. Results show that: (1) Most of these indicators are highly correlated with at least another indicator, and six principal components (i.e., size, terrain-variation, regularity, long-street, circuity and altitude) were found. (2) Seven clusters (i.e., regular, long-street, large size, irregular, varied-terrain, high-circuity and high-altitude) of cities were identified; cities of the same cluster can be spatially aggregated and also distributed across different regions. (3) Most of these clusters can be interpreted using terrain and land-cover data, which indicates that the urban forms of most cities across the globe are related to geographical factors. The clustering results may be used not only to compare street networks and their urban forms at a global scale but also to understand the formation and development of an urban street network.

Industrial heritage is among the products of modern urban development, and the influencing factors of its regeneration and development are often complex. Due to different national conditions, the research progress and approaches in industrial heritage reuse in China are different from other countries. While industrial heritage sites in Europe have become part of urban redevelopment in several regions, China still focuses mostly on single objects, lacking systematic analysis, especially at the urban scale. Regarding the city of Nanjing, an operational approach to complex urban dynamics is proposed based on a simplified analysis of official statistics, maps and GIS technology. The influence mechanisms of Nanjing’s urban planning on industrial heritage regeneration and development after 1990 are analyzed. The results show that urban growth boundaries, traffic accessibility, eco-environmental policies, population distribution, industrial renovation investment and natural resource change all have a significant impact on the abandonment and regeneration of Nanjing industrial heritage. This study expands the research perspective of industrial heritage reuse in China and proposes a clearer systematic planning strategy for the future of industrial heritage in cities.

The catalytic conversion of CO2 to C2 products through the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) offers the possibility of preparing carbon-based fuels and valuable chemicals in a sustainable way. Herein, various Fen and Co5 clusters are designed to screen out the good catalysts with reasonable stability, as well as high activity and selectivity for either C2H4 or CH3CH2OH generation through density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The binding energy and cohesive energy calculations show that both Fe5 and Co5 clusters can adsorb stably on the N-doped carbon (NC) with one metal atom anchored at the center of the defected hole via a classical MN4 structure. The proposed reaction pathway demonstrates that the Fe5-NC cluster has better activity than Co5-NC, since the carbon–carbon coupling reaction is the potential determining step (PDS), and the free energy change is 0.22 eV lower in the Fe5-NC cluster than that in Co5-NC. However, Co5-NC shows a better selectivity towards C2H4 since the hydrogenation of CH2CHO to CH3CHO becomes the PDS, and the free energy change is 1.08 eV, which is 0.07 eV higher than that in the C-C coupling step. The larger discrepancy of d band center and density of states (DOS) between the topmost Fe and sub-layer Fe may account for the lower free energy change in the C-C coupling reaction. Our theoretical insights propose an explicit indication for designing new catalysts based on the transition metal (TM) clusters supported on N-doped carbon for multi-hydrocarbon synthesis through systematically analyzing the stability of the metal clusters, the electronic structure of the critical intermediates and the energy profiles during the CO2RR.

As a new type of nonvolatile device, the memristor has become one of the most promising technologies for designing a new generation of high-density memory. In this paper, a 4-bit high-density nonvolatile memory based on a memristor is designed and applied to image storage. Firstly, a memristor cluster structure consisting of a transistor and four memristors is designed. Furthermore, the memristor cluster is used as a memory cell in the crossbar array structure to realize the memory design. In addition, when the designed non-volatile memory is applied to gray scale image storage, only two memory cells are needed for the storage of one pixel. Through the Pspice circuit simulation, the results show that compared with the state-of-the-art technology, the memory designed in this paper has better storage density and read–write speed. When it is applied to image storage, it achieves the effect of no distortion and fast storage.

Sesame is one of the most important oilseed crops grown worldwide. It provides diverse nutraceuticals—including lignans, unsaturated fatty acids (UFA), phytosterols, etc.—to humans. Among sesame’s nutraceuticals, phytosterols have received less attention from sesame breeders, although their biological and pharmacological functions have been recorded. Therefore, in the present study, we evaluated the variation of phytosterol contents in 402 sesame accessions grown in two environments and revealed their associated loci and candidate genes. Gas chromatography (GC) analysis unveiled that sesame mainly contains four phytosterols: campesterol, stigmasterol, β-sitosterol, and Δ5-avenasterol. β-sitosterol (1.6–4.656 mg/g) was the major phytosterol, followed by campesterol (0–2.847 mg/g), stigmasterol (0.356–1.826 mg/g), and Δ5-avenasterol (0–1.307 mg/g). The total phytosterol content varied from 2.694 to 8.388 mg/g. Genome-wide association study identified 33 significant associated single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) loci for the four traits, of which Ch6-39270 and Ch11-142842 were environmentally stable and simultaneously linked with campesterol and stigmasterol content variation. Candidate genes screening indicated that SINPZ1100015 encoding a NAC domain-containing protein 43 is likely the major candidate effect gene of phytosterol variation in sesame. The results of this study extend knowledge of phytosterol variation in sesame and provide important resources for markers-assisted breeding of high-phytosterol content varieties.

Plasma treatment is considered a straightforward, cost-effective, and environmental-friendly technique for surface modification of film materials. In this study, air plasma treatment was applied for performance improvement of pure PVA, cellulose nanocrystal (CNC)/PVA, and CNC/oxalic acid (OA)/PVA films. Compared with the original performance of pure PVA, the mechanical properties and water resistance of air plasma treated films were greatly improved. Among them, the CNC/OA/PVA film treated by three minutes of air plasma irradiation exhibits the most remarkable performance in mechanical properties (tensile strength: 132.7 MPa; Young’s modulus: 5379.9 MPa) and water resistance (degree of swelling: 47.5%; solubility: 6.0%). By means of various modern characterization methods, the wettability, surface chemical structure, surface roughness, and thermal stability of different films before and after air plasma treatment were further revealed. Based on the results obtained, the air plasma treatment only changed the surface chemical structure, surface roughness, and hydrophobicity, while keeping the inner structure of films intact.

Nymphaea hybrid, a precious water lily, is a widely-cultivated aquatic flower with high ornamental, economic, medicinal, and ecological value; it blooms recurrently and emits a strong fragrance. In the present study, in order to understand the volatile components of N. hybrid and its relationship with petals structure characteristics, the morphologies and anatomical structures of the flower petals of N. hybrid were investigated, and volatile compounds emitted from the petals were identified. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy were used to describe petal structures, and the volatile constituents were collected using headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) fibers and analyzed using gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The results indicated that the density and degree of protrusion and the number of plastids and osmiophilic matrix granules in the petals play key roles in emitting the fragrance. There were distinct differences in the components and relative contents of volatile compounds among the different strains of N. hybrid. In total, 29, 34, 39, and 43 volatile compounds were detected in the cut flower petals of the blue-purple type (Nh-1), pink type (Nh-2), yellow type (Nh-3) and white type (Nh-4) of N. hybrid at the flowering stage, with total relative contents of 96.78%, 97.64%, 98.56%, and 96.15%, respectively. Analyses of these volatile components indicated that alkenes, alcohols, and alkanes were the three major types of volatile components in the flower petals of N. hybrid. The predominant volatile compounds were benzyl alcohol, pentadecane, trans-α-bergamotene, (E)-β-farnesene, and (6E,9E)-6,9-heptadecadiene, and some of these volatile compounds were terpenes, which varied among the different strains. Moreover, on the basis of hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) and principal component analysis (PCA), the N. hybrid samples were divided into four groups: alcohols were the most important volatile compounds for Nh-4 samples; esters and aldehydes were the predominant volatiles in Nh-3 samples; and ketones and alkenes were important for Nh-2 samples. These compounds contribute to the unique flavors and aromas of the four strains of N. hybrid.
