Bismuth oxides were synthesized from bismuth carbonate using the sol-gel method. Studies have described the formation of Bi2O3, as a precursor of HNO3 dissolution, and intermediate oxides, such as BixOy when using H2SO4 and H3PO4. The average size of the crystallite calculated from Scherrer’s formula ranged from 9 to 19 nm, according to X-ray diffraction. The FTIR analysis showed the presence of specific Bi2O3 bands when using HNO3 and of crystalline phases of “bismuth oxide sulphate” when using H2SO4 and “bismuth phosphate” when using H3PO4. The TG curves showed major mass losses and specific thermal effects, delimited in four temperature zones for materials synthesized with HNO3 (with loss of mass between 24% and 50%) and H2SO4 (with loss of mass between 45% and 76%), and in three temperature zones for materials synthesized with H3PO4 (with loss of mass between 13% and 43%). Further, the thermal stability indicates that materials have been improved by the addition of a polymer or polymer and carbon. Confocal laser scanning microscopy showed decreased roughness in the series, [BixOy]N > [BixOy-6% PVA]N > [BixOy-C-6% PVA]N, and increased roughness for materials [BixOy]S, [BixOy-6% PVA]S, [BixOy-C-6% PVA]S, [BixOy]P, [BixOy-6% PVA]P and [BixOy-C-6% PVA]P. The morphological analysis (electronic scanning microscopy) of the synthesized materials showed a wide variety of forms: overlapping nanoplates ([BixOy]N or [BixOy]S), clusters of angular forms ([BixOy-6% PVA]N), pillars ([BixOy-6% PVA]S-Au), needle particles ([BixOy-Au], [BixOy-6% PVA]S-Au, [BixOy-C-6% PVA]S-Au), spherical particles ([BixOy-C-6% PVA]P-Pt), 2D plates ([BixOy]P-Pt) and 3D nanometric plates ([BixOy-C-6% PVA]S-Au). For materials obtained in the first synthesis stage, antimicrobial activity increased in the series [BixOy]N > [BixOy]S > [BixOy]P. For materials synthesized in the second synthesis stage, when polymer (polyvinyl alcohol, PVA) was added, maximum antimicrobial activity, regardless of the microbial species tested, was present in the material [BixOy-6% PVA]S. For the materials synthesized in the third stage, to which graphite and 6% PVA were added, the best antimicrobial activity was in the material [BixOy-C-6% PVA]P. Materials synthesized and doped with metal ions (gold or platinum) showed significant antimicrobial activity for the tested microbial species.

Background/Objectives: Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) remains a leading cause of vision impairment in premature infants, especially those with Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS) necessitating respiratory support. This study aimed to identify correlations between plasma levels of Insulin-like Growth Factor 1 (IGF1) and Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), and the risk of developing ROP. Additionally, it explored the association of ROP severity grades with plasma levels of glucose, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), creatin phosphokinase (CPK), and other biomarkers, aiming to uncover predictive markers for ROP risk and severity in this population. Methods: This prospective study included premature neonates admitted with RDS requiring respiratory support, conducted over 18 months at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of the Louis Turcanu Emergency Clinical Hospital for Children, Timisoara. Plasma levels of IGF1 and TNF-alpha were measured on days 1 and 14 post-birth, alongside the initial assessment of glucose, LDH, and CPK levels. Results: Significant correlations were observed between lower gestational age and elevated LDH levels on day 7–10 (rho = −0.341, p = 0.0123) and between TNF-alpha levels at 2 weeks and ROP severity (rho = 0.512, p = 0.0004). Elevated IGF1 levels were protective against ROP, with Beta coefficients of 0.37 (p = 0.0032) for the first collection and 0.32 (p = 0.0028) for the second, suggesting their potential as biomarkers for ROP risk assessment. Higher levels of TNF-alpha at 2 weeks were associated with an increased risk of ROP (Beta = −0.45, p = 0.0014), whereas higher IGF1 levels offered protective effects against ROP, with Beta coefficients of 0.37 (p = 0.0032) for the first collection and 0.32 (p = 0.0028) for the second. Elevated LDH levels on day 7–10 post-birth were linked to an increased risk of ROP (Beta = 0.29, p = 0.0214). Conclusions: These findings highlight the potential of IGF1 and TNF-alpha as predictive biomarkers for ROP, offering avenues for early intervention and improved management strategies in this high-risk group.

Magnesium (Mg), an essential nutrient with a wide area of physiological roles, stands as a cofactor in over 600 enzymatic reactions involved in the synthesis of proteins and nucleic acids, DNA repair, neuromuscular functions, neuronal transmission, cardiac rhythm regulation, and the modulation of metabolic pathways, as well as acting as a natural blocker for the calcium channels. Our objective was to highlight the most recent clinical data with respect to daily Mg intake (DMI) and metabolic traits, particularly type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). This was a PubMed-based review of the English-language medical papers across different key terms of search; the time frame was from January 2019 until April 2024. We included (clinically relevant) original studies and excluded cases reports, series, reviews, editorials, opinion, experimental studies, and non-human data as well as studies that did not specifically assessed DMI and only provided assays of serum Mg, studies on patients diagnosed with type 1 or secondary DM. A total of 30 studies were included and we organized the key findings into several sections as follows. Studies investigating DMI in relationship with the adherence to local recommendations in diabetic subjects (n = 2, one transversal and another retrospective cohort; N = 2823) found that most of them had lower DMI. Deficient DMI was correlated with the risk of developing/having DM across five studies (n = 5, one prospective and four of cross-sectional design; N = 47,166). An inverse correlation between DMI and DM prevalence was identified, but these data are presented amid a rather heterogeneous spectrum. Four novel studies (N = 7279) analysed the relationship between DMI and DM control according to various methods (HbA1c, fasting and postprandial glycaemia, and insulin); the association may be linear in diabetic subjects only at certain levels of DMI; additionally, the multifactorial influence on HBA1c should take into consideration this dietary determinant, as well, but there are no homogenous results. Three studies concerning DMI and diabetic complications (one cross-sectional, one prospective, and another case–control study) in terms of retinopathy (n = 1, N = 3794) and nephropathy (n = 2, N = 4805) suggested a lower DMI was associated with a higher risk of such complications. Additionally, two other studies (one prospective and one retrospective cohort) focused on mortality (N = 6744), which, taking only certain mortality indicators into consideration, might be decreased in the subgroups with a higher DMI. Seven studies (N = 30,610) analysed the perspective of DMI in the general population with the endpoint of different features amid glucose profile, particularly, insulin resistance. Concerning HOMA-IR, there were three confirmatory studies and one non-confirmatory, while fasting plasma glucose was highlighted as inversely correlated with a DMI (n = 1). The highest level of evidence regarding Mg supplementation effects on glucose metabolism stands on seven randomised controlled trials (N = 350). However, the sample size was reduced (from 14 to 86 individuals per study, either diabetic or pre-diabetic) and outcomes were rather discordant. These clinical aspects are essential from a multidisciplinary perspective and further trials are mandatory to address the current areas of discordant results.

In this paper, attention is drawn to the deterioration of Romanian surface water ecosystems due to eutrophication, an important environmental issue both at national and international levels. An inventory of existing studies dealing with the issue of the eutrophication of lakes and reservoirs in Romania is made, aiming to identify the main problems Romania is facing in monitoring, classifying, and managing eutrophic ecosystems. On Web of Science, the keyword “Eutrophication”, with “Romania” as country/region, leads to 50 publications, which are analyzed in this review. The number of articles found does not reflect the real environmental issue represented by eutrophic lakes and reservoirs in Romania. At a national level, only 126 lakes and reservoirs have been monitored and assessed between 2018 and 2020, in terms of ecological status/ecological potential. Thus, at a global evaluation, 77% of natural lakes and 33% of artificial ones do not reach the quality objectives. The results of this study showed that the frequency of measurements taken by water quality indicators is not the strongest point of measurement campaigns, as it is not sufficient for the diagnosis of eutrophic lakes, and supplementary measures must be undertaken to better understand and mitigate this phenomenon.

Introduction: Graves’ disease (GD) is an autoimmune disorder affecting the thyroid gland, leading to systemic manifestations such as hyperthyroidism, Graves’ orbitopathy, and pretibial myxedema. Contrary to previous beliefs that hyperthyroidism protects against thyroid cancer, recent studies reveal an increased incidence of thyroid malignancies in GD patients, particularly differentiated thyroid carcinomas and, in rare cases, medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC). Case series: This case series presents three female GD patients diagnosed with MTC, highlighting the complexities of diagnosis and management. All patients exhibited thyroid nodules with suspicious ultrasonographic features, elevated plasma calcitonin levels, and required total thyroidectomy. Histological examination confirmed MTC. Discussion: These cases underscore the importance of routine calcitonin screening in GD patients with thyroid nodules to facilitate early detection and improve prognosis. Our findings suggest that while the coexistence of GD and MTC is likely incidental, vigilant monitoring and comprehensive evaluation are crucial for timely intervention. Conclusions: This study advocates for integrating calcitonin testing into the standard diagnostic protocol for GD patients presenting with thyroid abnormalities.

This paper presents the development of the hardware and software architecture of a sixdegrees of freedom (DOF) parallel robot (PARA-SILSROB) by illustrating all the stages undertaken to achieve the experimental model of the robot. Based on the experimental model, the control architecture is also presented, which is primarily based on a master–slave control system through which the surgeon controls the robot using the master console composed of commercial peripheral components (two 3D Space Mouse devices, computer, and keyboard) integrated with the solution developed in this study and presented in this paper. The robot was developed also according to the surgical protocol and surgeon’s requirements, and for the functionality testing of the mechanical structure, two experimental stands were used. The first stand presented several surgical steps, such as manipulation, resection, and suture of experimental tissues (simulating real-life robot-assisted surgical maneuvers) using commercial instruments. The second stand presented a simulation of an esophagectomy for esophageal cancer and digestive reconstruction through a right intercostal approach. For this testing phase, the organs were created using 3D reconstruction, and their simplified models were 3D printed using PolyJet technology. Furthermore, the input trajectory generated using the master console was compared with the robot actuator’s movements and the obtained results were used for validation of the proposed robot control system.

Fe50Mn35Sn15 Heusler alloy, obtained by mechanical alloying, was subjected to larger milling times in the range of 30–50 h to study the phase stability and morphology. X-ray diffraction studies have shown that the milled samples crystallise in a disordered A2 structure. The A2 structure was found to be stable in the milling range studied, contrary to the computation studies performed on this composition. Using Rietveld refinements, the lattice parameter, mean crystallite size, and lattice strain were computed. The nature of the obtained phases by milling was found to be nanocrystalline with values below 50 nm. A linear increase rate of 0.00713 (h−1) was computed for lattice strain as the milling time increased. As the milling time increases, the lattice parameter of the cubic Heusler was found to have a decreasing behaviour, reaching 2.9517 Å at 50 h of milling. The morphological and elemental distribution—characterised by scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy—evidenced Mn and Sn phase clustering. As the milling time increased, the morphology of the sample was found to change. The Mn and Sn cluster size was quantified by elemental line profile. Electrical resistivity evolution with milling time was analysed, showing a peak for 40 h of milling time.

Infective endocarditis is a severe but rarely diagnosed disease, characterized by the presence of bacterial infection at the level of the cardiac valves. Although the incidence of the disease is very low, the consequences are severe and the prognosis is very poor, outlining a high mortality rate among cases. The present report highlights the case of a 7-year-old dog presented with abrupt changes in the respiratory pattern, obtunded and in lateral recumbency. The physical examination of the patient revealed fever and a IV/VI systolic heart murmur, with the point of maximal intensity on the left hemithorax. Echocardiography identified hyperechoic and cavitary changes beneath the aortic valves and a retrograde turbulent jet originating in the left ventricle outflow tract communicating with the left atrium through a rupture in the aortomitral intervalvular wall. Because of very unstable hemodynamic changes, the dog suddenly died despite the initiation of intensive care supportive treatment, and the postmortem evaluation of the heart confirms the suspicion of infective aortic endocarditis with the development of a paravalvular abscess and an aorto-left atrial fistula.

The paradigm “one drug fits all” or “one dose fits all” will soon be challenged by pharmacogenetics research and application. Drug response—efficacy or safety—depends on interindividual variability. The current clinical practice does not include genetic screening as a routine procedure and does not account for genetic variation. Patients with the same illness receive the same treatment, yielding different responses. Integrating pharmacogenomics in therapy would provide critical information about how a patient will respond to a certain drug. Worldwide, great efforts are being made to achieve a personalized therapy-based approach. Nevertheless, a global harmonized guideline is still needed. Plasma membrane proteins, like receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK) and G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), are ubiquitously expressed, being involved in a diverse array of physiopathological processes. Over 30% of drugs approved by the FDA target GPCRs, reflecting the importance of assessing the genetic variability among individuals who are treated with these drugs. Pharmacogenomics of transmembrane protein receptors is a dynamic field with profound implications for precision medicine. Understanding genetic variations in these receptors provides a framework for optimizing drug therapies, minimizing adverse reactions, and advancing the paradigm of personalized healthcare.

Genetic factors play a significant role in the pathogenesis of mitral valve diseases, including mitral valve prolapse (MVP) and mitral valve regurgitation. Genes like Fibrillin-1 (FBN1), Filamin A (FLNA), matrix metalloproteinase 2 (MMP2), and SRY-box transcription factor 9 (SOX9) are known to influence mitral valve pathology but knowledge of the exact mechanism is far from clear. Data regarding serum parameters, transesophageal echocardiography, and genetic and histopathologic parameters were investigated in 54 patients who underwent cardiovascular surgery for mitral valve regurgitation. The possible association between Fibrillin-1, Filamin A, MMP2, and SOX9 gene expressions was checked in relationship with the parameters of systemic inflammatory response. The mRNA expression levels (RQ—relative quantification) were categorized into three distinct groups: low (RQ < 1), medium/normal (RQ = 1–2), and high (RQ > 2). Severe fibrosis of the mitral valve was reflected by high expression of FBN1 and low expression of MMP2 (p < 0.05). The myxoid degeneration level was associated with the mRNA expression level for FBN1 and a low lymphocyte-monocyte ratio was associated with an increased mRNA expression of FBN1 (p < 0.05). A high number of monocytes was associated with high values of FBN1 whereas the increase in the number of lymphocytes was associated with high levels of MMP2. In addition, we observed that the risk of severe hyalinization was enhanced by a low mRNA expression of FLNA and/or SOX9. In conclusion, a lower FLNA mRNA expression can reflect the aging process that is highlighted in mitral valve pathology as a higher risk for hyalinization, especially in males, that might be prevented by upregulation of the SOX9 gene. FBN1 and MMP2 influence the inflammation-related fibrotic degeneration of the mitral valve. Understanding the genetic base of mitral valve pathology can provide insights into disease mechanisms, risk stratification, and potential therapeutic targets.

Natural-based and synthetic tissue adhesives have attracted extensive attention in the last two decades for their ability to stabilize uncontrolled bleeding instances. However; these materials present several drawbacks during use that scientists have tried to minimize in order to optimize their usage. This study comprises the development of a novel wound dressing, combining the excellent properties of polylactic acid (PLA) non-woven textile, as substrate, obtained through electrospinning, and a cyanoacrylate-based (CA) tissue adhesive, for rapid hemostatic action. Thus, the fabrication of electrospun PLA membranes at three different PLA concentrations, the design and manufacturing of the support system and the production of surgical patches were carried out. SEM and FT-IR methods were employed for analyzing the morphology as well as the indicative markers for the shelf life evolution of the obtained patches. PLA fibers with well-defined structures and a mean diameter varying between 4.6 and 7.24 μm were obtained with the increase of the concentration of the PLA solutions. In vivo tests on a rat model as well as peeling tests for good patch adhesion on liver fragments harvested from the test animals, with a limit for the strength of the liver tissue of 1.5 N, were carried out. The devices exhibited excellent adhesion to the parenchymal tissue and a long enough shelf life to be used with success in surgical procedures, also facilitating prompt hemostatic action.

In this study, xCaO‧5Fe2O3‧(95−x)Pb glasses and vitroceramics containing various concentrations of calcium ions (from 0 to 50 mol% CaO) were prepared using the spent anodic plate of a car battery. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed changes in the network structure as a function of CaO content. The intensities of the IR bands due to the sulfate and sulfite units were lowered, indicating a decrease in the sulfurization degree within the lead network. In the UV–vis spectra, the presence of electronic transitions of the Fe3+, Pb2+, and Fe2+ ions were identified. The EPR spectra were characterized by resonance signals centered at about g ~ 2 and 4.3, corresponding to the trivalent iron ions. For the samples with 5 ≤ x ≤ 12, the signals decreased abruptly, suggesting a Fe3+→Fe2+ interconversion and the formation of the Fe3O4 crystalline phase. A considerable increase in the intensity of the signal centered around g ~ 2 was observed as the CaO concentration increased to 30% in the host matrix. Our results confirm that the higher CaO levels of 3 mol% are responsible for the increase in the radius of curvature of the semicircle arcs in the EIS plots and the decrease in their conductivity.

There has been a growing interest recently in exploring the role of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by cognitive decline and memory loss that affects millions of people worldwide. Research has shown that the BBB plays a crucial role in regulating the entry of therapeutics into the brain. Also, the potential benefits of using antioxidant molecules for drug delivery were highlighted in Alzheimer’s treatment to enhance the therapeutic efficacy and reduce oxidative stress in affected patients. Antioxidant-based nanomedicine shows promise for treating AD by effectively crossing the BBB and targeting neuroinflammation, potentially slowing disease progression and improving cognitive function. Therefore, new drug delivery systems are being developed to overcome the BBB and improve the delivery of therapeutics to the brain, ultimately improving treatment outcomes for AD patients. In this context, the present review provides an in-depth analysis of recent advancements in AD treatment strategies, such as silica nanoparticles loaded with curcumin, selenium nanoparticles loaded with resveratrol, and many others, focusing on the critical role of the BBB and the use of antioxidant-based drug delivery systems.

In the present study, the capacity of two commercial NiTi and NiTiCu shape memory alloy (SMA) wires to develop work-generating (WG) and constrained-recovery (CR) shape memory effects (SMEs), as well as the capacity of a commercial NiTiFe super-elastic wire to act as cold-shape restoring element, have been investigated. Using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), the reversible martensitic transformation to austenite of the three NiTi-based wires under study was emphasized by means of an endothermic minimum of the heat flow variation with temperature. NiTi and NiTiCu wire fragments were further tested for both WG-SME and CR-SME developed during the heating, from room temperature (RT) to different maximum temperatures selected from the DSC thermograms. The former tests revealed the capacity to repetitively lift various loads during repetitive heating, while the latter tests disclosed the repetitive development of shrinkage stresses during the repetitive heating of elongated wires. The tensile behavior of the three NiTi-based SMA wires was analyzed by failure and loading–unloading tests. The study disclosed the actuation capacity of NiTi and NiTiCu shape memory wires, which were able to develop work while being heated, as well as the resetting capacity of NiTiFe super-elastic wires, which can restore the initial undeformed shape of shape memory wires which soften while being cooled down. These features enable the design of a robotic gripper based on the development of NiTi-based actuators with repetitive action.

Walnuts (Juglans regia L.) are an important source of ellagitannins. They have been linked to positive effects on many pathologies, including cardiovascular disorders, neurodegenerative syndromes, and cancer. The limited bioavailability of ellagitannins prevents them from reaching significant circulatory levels, despite their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and chemopreventive properties. Urolithins are ellagitannin gut microbiota-derived metabolites. They have better intestinal absorption and may be responsible for the biological activities of ellagitannins. Recent evidence showed that walnut ellagitannins and their metabolites, urolithins, could have positive outcomes for human health. This study aims to synthesize the current literature on the antioxidant activity and mechanistic pathways involved in the therapeutic potential of walnut ellagitannins and their metabolites. In the eligible selected studies (n = 31), glansreginin A, pedunculagin, and casuarictin were the most prevalent ellagitannins in walnuts. A total of 15 urolithins, their glucuronides, and sulfate metabolites have been identified in urine, blood, feces, breast milk, and prostate tissue in analyzed samples. Urolithins A and B were associated with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, cardioprotective, neuroprotective, anticarcinogenic, and anti-aging activities, both in preclinical and clinical studies. Despite the promising results, further well-designed studies are necessary to fully elucidate the mechanisms and confirm the therapeutic potential of these compounds in human health.

Garlic (Allium sativum L.) is one of the most esteemed plants due to its medicinal properties. Its health benefits for humans are attributed to its chemical compounds. Few studies characterize garlic genotypes cultivated in Romania concerning their chemical composition. In this context, this study aimed to determine the chemical compounds for 16 local garlic genotypes cultivated under the same climatic and technological conditions. The chemical characteristics studied were the total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), reducing sugar content, antioxidant activity (AO), vitamin C, and acidity level. Chemical composition varied significantly among genotypes: TPC ranged from 656.07 to 1317.32 µg GAE/g FW; TFC ranged from 427.08 to 1447.90 µg QE/g FW; vitamin C ranged from 3.24 to 5.37 mg/g FW; reducing sugar content ranged from 3.24 to 5.37 mg/g FW; and the acidity level for the control was 6 meq/100 g. Among the selected genotypes, differences were observed between 3.48 and 11.02 meq/100 g. Significant correlations were noted between different compounds, specifically between TPC and AO, as well as between TPC and acidity level. In conclusion, this study highlights significant variability in terms of chemical composition of local garlic genotypes, which indicates notable differences between them and suggests that the genotypes may have different potential in medicinal and nutritional uses due to their distinctive chemical compositions.

By means of its facilities, AM brings several advantages in comparison with the classical manufacturing technologies. Nowadays, there are a huge number of unexplored directions, which assure AM will become a very powerful manufacturing process in the next period, with an undoubted low cost and reduced material consumption, as well as optimal stiffness and competitiveness technology. Between the unexplored (or less-explored) directions, one has to mention the dimensional methods’ involvement in gaining an optimal, highly competitive final product. This means that instead of the real structural element, named the prototype, the engineers will perform high-accuracy tests on the attached reduced-scale models, whose experimental results are extended to the prototype by means of the deduced model law (ML). The authors, based on their previous theoretical research as well as experimental investigations, offer a new approach, which is less implemented in AM technologies. Based on the obtained results, these dimensional methods are very promising, especially the last one, the so-called Modern Dimensional Analysis (MDA), conceived by Thomas Szirtes and described in the following paper. Starting with the nowadays-applied dimensional methods’ critical analysis, the authors will present evidence for the advantages of MDA, especially on the polymer-based AM technology. They will prove that MDA represents a very promising, as well as easy approach, which through its implementation can offer a higher competitiveness for AM technologies. As an illustration of the advantages of MDA, the authors conceived several MDA approaches for a given structural element’s case (a cantilever beam, with an internal-ribbed structure loaded at its free end by means of a vertical concentrated load), which, through their high accuracy in experimental-validated MLs, offer very good accuracy in model–prototype correlation. The deviations between the effective measured values of the displacements on the prototypes and those predicted, based on the values of the measurements on the models assigned to the prototypes by the validated MLs, were 1.06, 1.60, and 2.35%, respectively. In the authors’ opinion, MDA can represent a starting point for conceiving a highly competitive product with an optimal filling, as well as the deposition of layers using AM technologies. Based on the authors’ best knowledge, up to this moment, it seems that this engineering area does not fully apply the advantages of MDA, only in few limited cases, analyzed in the following.

In this study we consider correlated and simultaneous interventions regarding: i—the physical infrastructure (by crossover lines between the two tracks of a tram line), ii—the characteristics of the trams (by bi-directional trams), as well as iii—tactical and operative decisions of the line manager. How these interventions are reflected in the functional reliability of the tram line service is demonstrated for both cases of the current operation and for the case of overloads, respectively, for the case of the temporary degradation of circulation caused by random disruptive events. The theoretical analysis, generalizing findings regarding the effectiveness of solutions to improve functional reliability, is supplemented with quantitative evaluations related to certain situations of disruptions. The proposed solutions aim to increase the attractiveness of urban public transport. Even if the evaluations are focused mainly on the interests of the service quality perceived by the user, the beneficial consequences for the line manager (in terms of technical and commercial efficiency) are also addressed.

Among many other applications, electronic converters can be used with sensors with analogue outputs (DC voltage). This article presents an analogue computation converter with two DC voltages at the inputs (one input changes the frequency of the output signal, another input changes the amplitude of the output signal) that provide a periodic sinusoidal signal (with variable frequency and amplitude) at the output. On the basis of the analogue computation converter is a nonhomogeneous second-order linear ordinary differential equation which is solved analogically. The analogue computation converter consists of analogue multipliers and operational amplifiers, composed of seven function circuits: two analogue multiplication circuits, two analogue addition circuits, one non-inverting amplifier, and two integration circuits (with RC time constants). At the output of an oscillator is a sinusoidal signal which depends on the DC voltages applied on two inputs (0 ÷ 10 V): at one input, a DC voltage is applied to linearly change the sinusoidal frequency output (up to tens of kHz, according to two time constants), and at the other input, a DC voltage is applied to linearly change the amplitude of the oscillator output signal (up to 10 V). It can be used with sensors which have a DC output voltage and must be converted to a sine wave signal with variable frequency and amplitude with the aim of transmitting information over longer distances through wires. This article presents the detailed theory of the functioning, simulations, and experiments of the analogue computation converter.

The climate crisis necessitates a global shift to achieve a secure, sustainable, and affordable energy system toward a green energy transition reaching climate neutrality by 2050. Because of this, renewable energy sources have come to the forefront, and the research interest in microgrids that rely on distributed generation and storage systems has exploded. Furthermore, many new markets for energy trading, ancillary services, and frequency reserve markets have provided attractive investment opportunities in exchange for balancing the supply and demand of electricity. Artificial intelligence can be utilized to locally optimize energy consumption, trade energy with the main grid, and participate in these markets. Reinforcement learning (RL) is one of the most promising approaches to achieve this goal because it enables an agent to learn optimal behavior in a microgrid by executing specific actions that maximize the long-term reward signal/function. The study focuses on testing two optimization algorithms: logic-based optimization and reinforcement learning. This paper builds on the existing research framework by combining PPO with machine learning-based load forecasting to produce an optimal solution for an industrial microgrid in Norway under different pricing schemes, including day-ahead pricing and peak pricing. It addresses the peak shaving and price arbitrage challenges by taking the historical data into the algorithm and making the decisions according to the energy consumption pattern, battery characteristics, PV production, and energy price. The RL-based approach is implemented in Python based on real data from the site and in combination with MATLAB-Simulink to validate its results. The application of the RL algorithm achieved an average monthly cost saving of 20% compared with logic-based optimization. These findings contribute to digitalization and decarbonization of energy technology, and support the fundamental goals and policies of the European Green Deal.

(1) Background: Heart rate variability (HRV) has been investigated in the context of ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). This study contributes to the field by assessing short-term HRV during primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) using wearable technology, providing real-time insights into autonomic function. (2) Methods: This single-center, observational cohort study included 104 STEMI patients undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). HRV parameters (including SDNN, RMSSD, pNN50, HF, SD1, and SD2/SD1 ratio) were measured using a wearable device (Empatica E4 wristband, CE certified). Measurements were taken throughout the entire duration of the primary PCI, as well as specifically during the initial 5 min and the final 5 min of the procedure. The association between HRV parameters and adverse outcomes, including in-hospital mortality and in-hospital major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), were assessed. (3) Results: HRV parameters significantly decreased after myocardial revascularization, particularly SDNN, RMSSD, pNN50, HF, SD1, and SD2/SD1 ratio. Significant associations were found between reduced SD2/SD1 ratio, approximate entropy, and adverse outcomes, including increased in-hospital mortality and in-hospital MACE (respectively, p = 0.007, p = 0.017 and p = 0.006 and p = 0.005). The SD2/SD1 ratio was significantly lower in patients who died during the hospital stay (p = 0.008) compared to survivors. Approximate entropy was also significantly lower in deceased patients (p = 0.019). (4) Conclusions: Real-time HRV monitoring using wearable technology offers valuable data regarding dynamic physiological changes during primary PCI. Further studies are required to validate these preliminary results and to explore their potential implications for clinical practice.

Background/Objectives: Studies have reported that patients suffering from ankylosing spondylitis (AS) have decreased postural stability in comparison to healthy subjects. Our study aims to compare static plantar pressure and stabilometry parameters in AS patients who performed an 8-week exercise program (spine motion and flexibility exercises; stretching of hamstring, erector spine, and shoulder muscles; control abdominal and diaphragm breathing exercises and chest expansion exercises), in three different testing conditions (eyes open, eyes closed, and head retroflexed). Methods: Plantar pressure (the loading of the first and fifth metatarsal heads (MT1, MT5) and calcaneus) and stabilometry (CoP path length, 90% confidence ellipse area, and maximum CoP speed) were recorded in 28 AS patients (age 56.64 ± 10.3 years; body mass index 29.4 ± 4.9 kg/m2) at the beginning of rehabilitation and after 8 weeks. At first evaluation, there were significant differences (p < 0.05) for the foot loading sites (MT1, MT5, and calcaneus), both for the right and left feet, when comparing eyes open with the other two testing situations. Results: After rehabilitation, significant differences were recorded between eyes-open and head-retroflexed conditions for MT1 (p = 0.03 for right; p = 0.004 for left) and calcaneus (p = 0.014 for right; p = 0.011 for left). A significantly higher CoP path length was registered in both initial and final assessments when tested with eyes closed. The maximum CoP speed had increased values at both evaluations when tested with head retroflexed. Conclusions: The CoP path length decreased after the physical exercise program, with a better postural stability after rehabilitation.

Background and Objective: Gastritis represents one of the most prevalent gastrointestinal diseases and has a multifactorial etiology, many forms of manifestation, and various symptoms. Diagnosis of gastritis is made based on clinical, endoscopic, and histological criteria, and although it is a thorough process, many cases are misdiagnosed or overlooked. This systematic review aims to provide an extensive overview of current artificial intelligence (AI) applications in gastritis diagnosis and evaluate the precision of these systems. This evaluation could highlight the role of AI as a helpful and useful tool in facilitating timely and accurate diagnoses, which in turn could improve patient outcomes. Methods: We have conducted an extensive and comprehensive literature search of PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science, including studies published until July 2024. Results: Despite variations in study design, participant numbers and characteristics, and outcome measures, our observations suggest that implementing an AI automatic diagnostic tool into clinical practice is currently feasible, with the current systems achieving high levels of accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity. Our findings indicate that AI outperformed human experts in most studies, with multiple studies exhibiting an accuracy of over 90% for AI compared to human experts. These results highlight the significant potential of AI to enhance diagnostic accuracy and efficiency in gastroenterology. Conclusions: AI-based technologies can now automatically diagnose using images provided by gastroscopy, digital pathology, and radiology imaging. Deep learning models exhibited high levels of accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity while assessing the diagnosis, staging, and risk of neoplasia for different types of gastritis, results that are superior to those of human experts in most studies.

Breast cancer is one of the most common forms of neoplasia worldwide. The purpose of our observational study was to evaluate the status of HER2 overexpression among new cases of breast neoplasia with an impact on the natural history of breast cancer disease and therapeutic personalization according to staging. This study included 45 breast cancer patients which have an overexpression of HER2 through the mutation of the EGFR-ERBB2 receptor. Immunohistochemical staining was performed on sections of formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded breast tissue. The patients were evaluated demographically and therapeutically in all stages. The post-surgical histopathological examination revealed complete pathological responses in 19 patients and pathological responses with residual disease either at the tumor level or lymphatic or both variants in a percentage of 44% (15 cases). The disease-free interval (DFI) under anti-HER2 therapy was recorded in 41 patients, representing 91% of the study group. Anti-HER2 therapy in any therapeutic stage has shown increased efficiency in blocking these tyrosine kinase receptors, evidenced by the high percentage of complete pathological responses, as well as the considerable percentage (47%) of complete remissions and stationary disease, in relation to the HER2-positive patient group.

Soft magnetic composite cores were produced by spark plasma sintering (SPS) from Ni3Fe@ZnFe2O4 and NiFeMo@ZnFe2O4 pseudo-core-shell powders. In the Fe-Ni alloys@ZnFe2O4 pseudo-core-shell composite powders, the core is a large nanocrystalline Permalloy or Supermalloy particle obtained by mechanical alloying, and the shell is a pseudo continuous layer of Zn ferrite particles. The pseudo-core-shell powders have been compacted by SPS at temperatures between 500–700 °C, with a holding time of 0 min. Several techniques were used for the characterisation of the powders and sintered compacts: X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, magnetic hysteresis measurements (DC and AC), and electrical resistivity. The electrical resistivity is stabilised at values of about 7 × 10−3 Ω·m for sintering temperatures between 600–700 °C and this value is three orders of magnitude higher than the electrical resistivity of sintered Fe compacts. The best relative initial permeability was obtained for the Supermalloy/ZnFe2O4 composite compacts sintered at 600 °C, which decreases linearly for the entire frequency range studied, from around 95 to 50. At a frequency of 2000 Hz, the power losses are smaller than 1.5 W/kg. At a frequency of 10 kHz, the power losses are larger, but they remain at a reduced level. In the case of Supermalloy/ZnFe2O4 composite compact SPS-ed at 700 °C, the specific power losses are even lower than 5 W/kg. The power losses’ decomposition proved that intra-particle losses are the main type of losses.

Background and Objectives: Ovarian cancer, including tubal and peritoneal cancer, is the third most common gynecological cancer and the leading cause of death from gynecological malignancies in developed countries. This study explores the prognostic value of the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in determining the optimal duration of neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) for advanced ovarian cancer. It also investigates the correlation between NLR dynamics and the KELIM score, a chemosensitivity marker, to enhance individualized therapeutic strategies. Materials and Methods: A total of 79 patients underwent NACT followed by interval debulking surgery (IDS) or palliative care. The data collected included demographic information, tumor characteristics, treatment modalities, and laboratory parameters. The baseline NLR (NLR-T0) and post-therapeutic NLR (NLR-T1) were calculated, and their variation (NLR∆) was analyzed. The KELIM score was determined using CA-125 values. Results: Patients with a high baseline NLR (≥2.5) had significantly worse progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) compared to those with a low NLR (Conclusions: The NLR is a valuable prognostic marker for assessing treatment response and guiding NACT duration in advanced ovarian cancer.

Background and Objectives: Atherosclerotic disease is a major contributor to heart failure, stroke, and myocardial infarction, significantly lowering the quality of life and life expectancy and placing a significant burden on healthcare. Not all lesions deemed non-significant are benign, and conversely, not all significant lesions are causative of ischemia. Fractional flow reserve (FFR) provides a functional assessment of coronary lesions, while optical coherence tomography (OCT) offers detailed imaging of plaque morphology, aiding in therapeutic decision-making. The objective of this study was to evaluate the utility of OCT and FFR as adjunctive tools in the catheterization laboratory for guiding therapeutic decisions in patients with multivessel disease for non-culprit vessels. Specifically, we aimed to assess how OCT and FFR influence therapeutic decision-making in patients with multivessel coronary artery disease. Materials and Methods: A total of 36 patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and multivessel disease were randomized 1:1 into two groups: one guided by FFR alone and the other by a combination of FFR and OCT. For the FFR group, revascularization decisions for non-culprit lesions were based solely on FFR measurements. If the FFR was >0.8, the procedure was concluded, and the patient received maximal medical treatment. If the FFR was ≤0.8, a stent was placed. For the FFR + OCT group, if the FFR was >0.8, the revascularization decision was based on OCT findings. If there were no vulnerable plaques (VP), the procedure was concluded, and the patient received maximal medical treatment. If OCT imaging indicated VP, then the patient underwent revascularization. If the FFR was ≤0.8, the patient underwent revascularization regardless of OCT findings. Results: OCT imaging altered the therapeutic decision in 11 cases where FFR measurements were above 0.8, but the lesions were characterized as VP. Analyzing the total change in the decision to stent, 4 cases in the FFR group and 15 cases in the FFR and OCT groups (4 based on FFR and 11 on OCT) revealed a statistically significant difference (p = 0.0006; Relative Risk = 0.2556; 95% CI: 0.1013 to 0.5603). When analyzing the change in the total decision both to stent and not to stent, we observed a statistically significant difference, with Group 1 having 7 cases and Group 2 having 15 cases (p = 0.0153; Relative Risk = 0.4050; 95% CI: 0.2004 to 0.7698. Conclusions: Based on the findings of this study, OCT significantly increases the percentage of stenting procedures by identifying vulnerable lesions. The use of intracoronary imaging facilitates the timely identification and treatment of these vulnerable lesions. This underscores the crucial role of OCT in enhancing the precision of coronary interventions by ensuring timely intervention for vulnerable lesions, thereby potentially improving patient outcomes.

Obesity, a significant public health concern with high prevalence in both adults and children, is a complex disorder arising from the interaction of multiple genes and environmental factors. Advances in genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and sequencing technologies have identified numerous polygenic causes of obesity, particularly genes involved in hunger, satiety signals, adipocyte differentiation, and energy expenditure. This study investigates the relationship between six obesity-related genes (CLOCK, FTO, GHRL, LEP, LEPR, MC4R) and their impact on BMI, WC, HC, WHR, and emotional eating behavior in 220 Romanian adults. Emotional eating was assessed using the validated Emotional Eating Questionnaire (EEQ). Our analysis revealed significant variability in obesity-related phenotypes and emotional eating behaviors across different genotypes. Specifically, CLOCK/CC, FTO/AA, and LEP/AA genotypes were strongly associated with higher obesity metrics and emotional eating scores, while GHRL/TT and MC4R/CC were linked to increased BMI and WHR. The interplay between genetic predisposition and emotional eating behavior significantly influenced BMI and WHR, indicating a complex relationship between genetic and behavioral factors. This study, the first of its kind in Romania, provides a foundation for targeted interventions to prevent and reduce obesity and suggests potential strategies for gene expression modulation to mitigate the effects of emotional eating. Adopting a ‘One Health’ approach by creating an evidence base derived from both human and animal studies is crucial for understanding how to control obesity.

Our study introduces an enhanced version of the Importance–Performance Analysis (IPA) method, a powerful tool that can be applied across various domains. This method plays a crucial role in our research, aiding in making well-informed decisions about smart tourism destination attributes. We achieved this by evaluating how 911 consumers from four different generations (Baby Boomers, Generation X, Millennials, and Generation Z) rated these attributes based on their most recent tourist destination visit. Unlike traditional methods that often rely on subjective opinions or complex statistical models, the Improved IPA (IIPA) method offers a clear approach to decision-making. It enables decision-makers to focus on the most crucial attributes that drive consumer interest, thereby optimizing resource allocation and marketing efforts. Specifically, to remain competitive, decision-makers for smart tourist destinations should focus on queuing-time forecast and applications, websites, and content accessible for travelers with disabilities for Baby Boomers; e-complaint handling for Generation X; smart emergency response system for Millennials; and tourist-flow forecast, real-time traffic broadcast, electronic-entrance guard systems, and accessible data about physical design features of accommodation, restaurants, and tourist attractions for Generation Z. Theoretically, this study advances the research on managerial decision-making by demonstrating the effectiveness of the IIPA as a clear and straightforward method for making optimal decisions about product or service attributes. In practice, the study provides decision-makers with valuable insights into the importance of different categories of smart attributes in shaping the overall holiday experience at a tourist destination for Baby Boomers, Generation X, Millennials, and Generation Z tourism consumers.

The stick–slip phenomenon, the initial stage when the traction wheel starts sliding on the rail, is a critical operation that needs to be detected quickly to control the traction drive. In this study, we have developed an experimental model that uses acceleration sensors mounted on the wheel to evaluate the amplitude of the stick–slip phenomena. These sensors can alert the driver or assist the traction control unit when a stick–slip occurs. We propose a method to reduce the amplitude of the stick–slip phenomenon using special hydraulic dampers and viscous dampers mounted on the tractive axles of the locomotive to prevent slipping during acceleration. This practical solution, validated through numerical simulation, can be readily implemented in railway systems. The paper’s findings can be used to select the necessary sensors and corresponding vibration dampers. By implementing these sliding reducers, a locomotive can significantly improve traction, apply more torque to the wheel, and increase the load of a carrier train, instilling confidence in the efficiency of the proposed solution.

This work proposes a modular learning framework (MIRA) for rehabilitation robots based on a new deep recurrent neural network (RNN) that achieves adaptive multi-joint motion imitation. The RNN is fed with the fundamental frequencies as well as the ranges of the joint trajectories, in order to predict the future joint trajectories of the robot. The proposed framework also uses a Segment Online Dynamic Time Warping (SODTW) algorithm to quantify the closeness between the robot and patient motion. The SODTW cost decides the amount of modification needed in the inputs to our deep RNN network, which in turn adapts the robot movements. By keeping the prediction mechanism (RNN) and adaptation mechanism (SODTW) separate, the framework achieves modularity, flexibility, and scalability. We tried both Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) and Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) RNN architectures within our proposed framework. Experiments involved a group of 15 human subjects performing a range of motion tasks in conjunction with our social robot, Zeno. Comparative analysis of the results demonstrated the superior performance of the LSTM RNN across multiple task variations, highlighting its enhanced capability for adaptive motion imitation.

This study describes the comparison between the interaction of a series of peptide-functionalized chitosan-based nanocapsules and liposomes with two cell lines, i.e., mouse macrophages RAW 264.7 and human endothelial cells EA.hy926. Both types of nanocarriers are loaded with magnetic nanoparticles and designed for anti-inflammatory therapy. The choice of these magnetic nanostructures is argued based on their advantages in terms of size, morphology, chemical composition, and the multiple possibilities of modifying their surface. Moreover, active targeting might be ensured by using an external magnetic field. To explore the impact of chitosan-based nanocapsules and liposomes on cell cytophysiology, the cell viability, using the MTT assay, and cell morphology were investigated. The results revealed low to moderate cytotoxicity of free nanocapsules and significant cytotoxicity induced by chitosan-coated liposomes loaded with dexamethasone, confirming its release from the delivery system. Thus, after 48 h of treatment with nanocapsules, the viability of RAW 264.7 cells varied between 88.18% (OCNPM-1I, 3.125 µg/mL) and 76.37% (OCNPM-1, 25 µg/mL). In the same conditions, EA.hy926 cell viability was between 99.91% (OCNPM-3, 3.125 µg/mL) and 75.15% (OCNPM-3, 25 µg/mL) at the highest dose (25 µg/mL), the values being comparable for both cell lines. Referring to the cell reactivity after dexamethasone-loaded liposome application, the lowest viability of RAW 264.7 cells was 41.25% (CLDM5CP-1, 25 µg/mL) and 58.20% (CLDMM2CP-1 1.25 µg/mL) in the endothelial cell line, proving a selective character of action of nanocarriers. The cell morphology test, performed to support and confirm the results obtained by the MTT test, revealed a differentiated response for the two types of nano-carriers. As expected, an intense cytotoxic effect in the case of dexamethasone-loaded liposomes and a lack of cytotoxicity for drug-free nanocapsules were noticed. Therefore, our study demonstrated the biocompatible feature of the studied nanocarriers, which highlights them for future research as potential drug delivery systems for pharmacological applications, including anti-inflammatory therapy.

Background: The relationship between motor coordination and physical fitness in preschool children is of significant interest due to its implications for overall health and development. This study aims to investigate the correlation between gross motor coordination, as assessed by the Körperkoordinationstest für Kinder (KTK), and health-related physical fitness components. Methods: A cross-sectional study, involving 139 preschool-aged children, was conducted. Physical fitness was assessed using the PREFIT fitness test battery, which includes measures of flexibility, muscular strength, speed/agility, and cardiorespiratory fitness. Motor coordination was evaluated using the KTK test, comprising four subtests. Results: Pearson correlation analysis revealed weak to strong positive and negative correlations between motor coordination and various physical fitness measures, including flexibility (r = 0.402; p = 0.01), muscular strength (r = 0.178; r = 0.487; r = 0.601; p < 0.05), speed/agility (r = −0.742; p = 0.01), and endurance (r = 0.539; p = 0.01). Additionally, hierarchical regression analysis demonstrated significant influence of motor coordination on physical fitness, explaining a notable percentage of the variance across different fitness components (3.2–55%). Conclusions: The findings underscore the importance of motor coordination in shaping physical fitness levels in preschool children. Promoting motor coordination skills early in childhood may have long-term benefits for overall health and fitness.

Background and Objectives: Systemic-inflammation-based prognostic scores and hematological indices have shown value in predicting outcomes in various clinical settings. However, their effectiveness in predicting outcomes specifically for IgA nephropathy (IgAN) and membranous nephropathy (MN), the most common primary glomerular diseases diagnosed by kidney biopsy, has not been thoroughly investigated. Materials and Methods: We conducted a retrospective, observational study involving 334 adult patients with biopsy-proven IgAN (196 patients) and MN (138 patients) from January 2008 to December 2017 at a tertiary center. We assessed six prognostic scores [Glasgow prognostic score (GPS), modified GPS (mGPS), prognostic nutritional index (PNI), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), lymphocyte-to-C-reactive protein ratio (LCRP)] and two hematological indices [red blood cell distribution width (RDW), platelet distribution width (PDW)] at diagnosis and examined their relationship with kidney and patient survival. Results: End-stage kidney disease (ESKD) occurred more frequently in the IgAN group compared to the MN group (37% vs. 12%, p = 0.001). The mean kidney survival time was 10.7 years in the IgAN cohort and 13.8 years in the MN cohort. After adjusting for eGFR and proteinuria, lower NLR and higher LCRP were significant risk factors for ESKD in IgAN. In the MN cohort, no systemic-inflammation-based scores or hematological indices were associated with kidney survival. There were 38 deaths (19%) in the IgAN group and 29 deaths (21%) in the MN group, showing no significant difference in mortality rates. The mean survival time was 13.4 years for the IgAN group and 12.7 years for the MN group. In the IgAN group, a lower PLR was associated with a higher mortality after adjusting for age, the Charlson comorbidity score, eGFR, and proteinuria. In patients with MN, higher NLR, PLR, and RDW were associated with increased mortality. Conclusions: NLR and LCRP are significant predictors of ESKD in IgAN, while PLR is linked to increased mortality. In MN, NLR, PLR, and RDW are predictors of mortality but not kidney survival. These findings underscore the need for disease-specific biomarkers and indicate that systemic inflammatory responses play varying roles in the progression and outcomes of these glomerular diseases. Future studies on larger cohorts are necessary to validate these markers.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a common heart disease in cats, characterized by regional or diffuse hypertrophy of the left ventricular walls, with an uncertain etiology and heterogenous natural history. Several types of rhythm disturbances are often associated with the disease. This study conducts a comprehensive review of the current literature, in order to evaluate the diagnostic and prognostic effectiveness of electrocardiography and Holter monitoring in the management of feline hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. The main subjects of discussion will include general information about HCM and its connection to arrhythmias. We will explore the rhythm disturbances documented in the current literature on Holter monitoring, as well as the techniques used for Holter monitoring. Additionally, the review will cover classical electrocardiography (ECG) and its diagnostic utility. Prognostic indicators and anti-arrhythmic therapy will also be discussed in detail. The findings highlight the importance of understanding arrhythmias in feline HCM for accurate diagnosis, risk assessment, and therapeutic intervention. ECG and Holter monitoring may offer valuable insights into managing feline HCM.

This literature review explores advancements in obesity and diabetes mellitus diagnosis and treatment, highlighting recent innovations that promise more personalized and effective healthcare interventions. For obesity diagnosis, traditional methods like body mass index (BMI) calculations are now complemented by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans, with emerging biomarkers from “omics” technologies. Diabetes diagnosis has advanced with standard hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) testing supplemented by novel measures such as advanced glycation end products (AGEs) and autoantibodies, alongside the use of artificial intelligence to enhance diagnostic accuracy. Treatment options for obesity are expanding beyond traditional methods. Minimally invasive bariatric surgeries, endoscopic procedures, fecal microbiota transplants (FMTs), and pharmaceuticals like GLP-1 receptor agonists (semaglutide, tirzepatide) show promising results. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and prescription digital therapeutics (PDTs) are also valuable tools for weight management. Diabetes treatment is also undergoing a transformation. Ultra-long-acting insulins and innovative oral insulin delivery methods are on the horizon. SGLT2 inhibitors and GLP-1 receptor agonists are proving to be effective medications for blood sugar control. Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems and closed-loop insulin delivery are revolutionizing diabetes management, while stem cell therapy holds promise for the future. By integrating advanced diagnostic tools with personalized treatment plans, obesity and diabetes care are entering a new era. This personalized approach empowers patients and paves the way for improved health outcomes and a better quality of life.

Background: In vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM) is a vital tool in studying dry eye disease (DED), providing insights into morphological changes at ocular surface unit levels. This review presents the main differences in corneal structure between aqueous-deficient dry eye disease (AD-DED) and normal eyes. Methods: A comprehensive search of PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and MEDLINE databases from January 2000 to December 2023 was conducted. The study selection process, as well as data selection and examination, were independently performed by two members of the review team. Results: The review reveals a consistent decrease in corneal surface epithelial cell density in AD-DED cases compared to a control group, but conflicting data on basal epithelial cell density. Notably, the abnormal hyperreflectivity of keratocytes in patients with Sjogren’s syndrome was recorded, and there was a significant keratocyte density in AD-DED subjects compared to evaporative DED and control groups. Studies also found a decrease in sub-basal nerve density, increased tortuosity, and the fragmentation of nerve fibers. Dendritic cell density and dendritic cell dendrites increase in AD-DED patients compared to healthy subjects. Conclusions: IVCM is a powerful tool for enhancing our understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying DED. However, the review underscores the urgent need to standardize the terminology, analysis, and units used for accurate interpretation, a crucial step in advancing our knowledge of DED.

One of the complications after total hip arthroplasty (THA) or total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is periprosthetic joint infection (PJI). Numerous studies have been performed to explore the value of biological parameters in the early identification of infection rates after THA and TKA. This study investigates alterations in inflammatory markers associated with PJI. This retrospective study focused on a cohort of patients with hip and knee arthroplasty treated between 2016 and 2022. CRP, ESR, and fibrinogen were observed preoperatively, on days one, three, six, and twenty-one postoperatively. From a total of 4076 THA and TKA performed during this period, 62 patients were identified with periprosthetic infections. We also identified the pathogens responsible for infections in order to assess if asymptomatic preoperative infections were involved in PJI. In patients with acute infections following TKA, days one and three postoperative recorded a CRP value below the expected range. The value of CRP in patients with early infection after THA was significantly increased on day six postoperative. ESR and fibrinogen values were not statistically significantly correlated with early PJI. The CRP level in acute PJI shows different patterns than those shown in the literature.

Introduction: We aimed to evaluate social media addiction in Romanian undergraduate nursing students and its association with academic performance, depression, and anxiety. Methods: We used a cross-sectional online survey to collect data among nursing undergraduate students enrolled at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy “Iuliu Hatieganu”, Cluj-Napoca, Romania. The Social Media Addiction Scale-Student Form (SMAS-SF), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) were used to assess social media addiction, depression, and anxiety, respectively. Results: A total of 90 nursing students participated in the study, of which 82 (91.1%) were females and 81 (90%) were of Romanian ethnicity. The median age of participants was 21 years (18–40). Males showed higher BDI total scores, SMAS-SF total scores, and STAI scale A state anxiety compared to females, and females showed higher STAI scale A trait anxiety compared to males, although these results were not statistically significant. Also, we found no significant difference in these variables between participants from different study years. Participants with no or mild depression had a significantly higher academic performance (p-value = 0.001), lower SMAS-SF (p-value = 0.004), and lower STAI scores (p-value < 0.001) compared to participants with borderline, moderate, or severe depression after performing multivariate regression analysis. Conclusions: Our study demonstrated that depression was significantly associated with social media addiction, anxiety, and lower academic performance in Romanian undergraduate nursing students.

The cyclic oxidation behavior of an additive manufactured CoCrMo alloy with 0.14 wt.% C was investigated at 914 °C for 32 cycles, each lasting 10 h, resulting in a total exposure time of 320 h. The oxidation rate was assessed for mass gain after finishing each 40 h oxidation cycle. It was experimentally determined that the oxidative process at 914 °C of this CoCrMo alloy follows a parabolic law, with the process being fast at the beginning and slowing down after the first 40 h. The microstructural analysis revealed that in the as-printed state, the phases developed were primarily the γ matrix and minor traces of ε phase. The oxidative process ensured an increase in the ε phase and precipitation of carbides which produced a 12% increase in the material’s hardness after the first 40 h of exposure at 914 °C. The oxidation process led to the development of an oxide scale comprising a dense Cr2O3 layer and a porous layer of CoCr2O4 spinel, the latter spalling after the 240 h of exposure. Despite this spallation, the oxide scale continued to develop in the presence of O, Cr, and Co. The experimental analysis provided valuable insights regarding the material’s behavior under prolonged exposure at high temperature in air, demonstrating its suitability as a candidate for additive manufactured mandrels used for bending metallic pipe fitting elbows.
