Exploring the impact of economic modernization on carbon balance is an essential endeavor to achieve carbon neutrality and combat climate change. However, the spatial impact of economic modernization on carbon balance remains ambiguous. Therefore, this study aims to explore the spatial spillover effects of agricultural modernization, industrialization, and urbanization on carbon balance during the economic modernization process in China, taking 30 provinces and cities in China as examples from 2010 to 2021. This study utilizes the spatial Durbin model to derive the following results: In the past decade, the carbon balance ratio has shown a fluctuating and decreasing dynamic evolution trend. There is an increase in regions with serious carbon deficits. Further investigation into the spatial spillover effect of carbon balance unveils that for every 1% increase in the carbon balance ratio of a province, neighboring provinces experience a decrease of 0.833%. Additionally, the spatial spillover effects of the three modernizations in China on the carbon balance ratio behave differently. Agricultural modernization and urbanization demonstrate negative spatial spillover effects on the carbon balance in neighboring regions, while industrialization exerts a significant positive spatial spillover effect on the carbon balance of neighboring regions. Regarding control variables, the level of innovation solely contributes to local carbon balance realization without generating a trickle-down effect, whereas infrastructure development operates inversely. At the same time, there are differences in the spatial effects of agricultural modernization and industrialization on the carbon balance between the eastern region and the central and western regions. The study underscores the importance of economic modernization and development processes focusing on fostering synergistic growth between economic and environmental benefits within both local and neighboring areas.

Developing non-precious metal-based electrocatalysts operating in high-current densities is highly demanded for the industry-level electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Here, we report the facile preparation of binder-free Mo2C-Mo2N heterostructures on carbon nanowalls/diamond (CNWs/D) via ultrasonic soaking followed by an annealing treatment. The experimental investigations and density functional theory calculations reveal the downshift of the d-band center caused by the heterojunction between Mo2C/Mo2N triggering highly active interfacial sites with a nearly zero ∆GH* value. Furthermore, the 3D-networked CNWs/D, as the current collector, features high electrical conductivity and large surface area, greatly boosting the electron transfer rate of HER occurring on the interfacial sites of Mo2C-Mo2N. Consequently, the self-supporting Mo2C-Mo2N@CNWs/D exhibits significantly low overpotentials of 137.8 and 194.4 mV at high current densities of 500 and 1000 mA/cm2, respectively, in an alkaline solution, which far surpass the benchmark Pt/C (228.5 and 359.3 mV) and are superior to most transition-metal-based materials. This work presents a cost-effective and high-efficiency non-precious metal-based electrocatalyst candidate for the electrochemical hydrogen production industry.

Lidar sensors play a pivotal role in a multitude of remote sensing domains, finding extensive applications in various sectors, including robotics, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), autonomous driving, and 3D reconstruction, among others. Their significance and versatility in these areas have made them indispensable tools for a wide range of applications. The accuracy of Lidar odometry (LO), which serves as the front end of SLAM, is crucial. In this paper, we propose a novel iterative closest point (ICP) technique that combines semantic features to improve LO precision. First, the semantic segmentation neural network is used to extract the semantic features from each frame of the point cloud. Then, the obtained semantic features assist in extracting the local geometric features of the point cloud. Also, the residual blocks of the ICP algorithm’s least squares are combined with semantic confidence functions to better predict the exact pose. Compared to LOAM, there is an average improvement of 4 cm in accuracy per 100 m. Experimental results illustrate the superiority of the proposed method and indicate that the fusion of semantic features can robustly improve the precision of LO.

Objective: Little is known about gut microbiota (GM) and cardiomyopathy. Their causal relationship was explored using two-sample Mendelian randomization (TSMR) performed by R software. Methods: The single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were further screened based on the genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of gut microbiota and cardiomyopathy obtained from an open database. TSMR was performed using an MR-Egger regression, simple estimator based on mode, weighted median method, inverse variance weighted (IVW), weighted estimator and CML-MA-BIC to explore the causal association. And the sensitivity analysis was carried out using an MR-Egger regression and the leave-one-out sensitivity test. Results: As for 211 GM taxa, IVW results confirmed that the class Actinobacteria (OR = 0.81, p = 0.021) and genus Coprobacter (OR = 0.85, p = 0.033) were protective factors for cardiomyopathy. The phylum Firmicutes (OR = 0.87, p < 0.01), family Acidaminococcaceae (OR = 0.89, p < 0.01), genus Desulfovibrio (OR = 0.92, p = 0.030) and genus Prevotella9 (OR = 0.93, p = 0.029) were protective factors for ischemic cardiomyopathy. The family Rhodospirillaceae (OR = 1.06, p = 0.036) and genus Turicibacter (OR = 1.09, p = 0.019) were risk factors for ischemic cardiomyopathy. The genus Olsenella (OR = 0.91, p = 0.032) was a protective factor for non-ischemic cardiomyopathy. The order Rhodospirillales (OR = 1.14, p = 0.024), family Rikenellaceae (OR = 1.21, p = 0.012) and genus Gordonibacter (OR = 1.12, p = 0.019) were risk factors for non-ischemic cardiomyopathy. The robustness of MR results was reflected in the heterogeneity (p > 0.05) and pleiotropy (p > 0.05) analyses. Conclusions: A potential causal relationship of cardiomyopathy with some GM taxa has been confirmed in the current study.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the connection between the soundscape of a forest park, restorative perception, and health benefits. In order to assess sound source perception, soundscape perception, restorative perception, and health benefits, 10 forest park environments in Fuzhou National Forest Park were chosen for sound walks. Correlation analysis, structural equation modeling, and mediating effects were used to analyze the relationships between the variables. The results showed that (1) the majority of natural sounds, like birdsong, had a positive correlation with soundscape perception with respect to being perceived as pleasant, harmonious, varied, and fluctuating; however, human-related and traffic noises had a negative correlation with perceptions of being pleasant and harmonious, and a positive correlation with perceptions of roughness. (2) The sound of running water and wind-blown leaves had strong favorable connections with emotional, cognitive, and behavioral restorative perceptions. The sound of birdsong was strongly correlated with restorative perceptions regarding emotional dimensions. The sound of wind held substantial favorable associations with emotional and cognitive restorative perceptions. Natural sounds, except for the sound of cicada chirping, had positive correlations with health benefits. The associations between human-related and mechanical sounds and restorative perception and health benefits were not statistically significant. (3) Soundscape pleasantness had a significant positive effect on restorative perceptions, and restorative perceptions had a significant positive effect on health benefits. The effect of soundscape pleasantness on health benefits was fully communicated through restorative perceptions. The annoyingness of a soundscape had no effect on restorative perception or health benefits. In the future, forest recreation activities based on soundscape perception could be carried out through the considered use of natural soundscape resources to promote health benefits.

Previous studies suggest that allergic diseases may be a protective factor in SARS-CoV-2 infection. However, data regarding the impact of dupilumab, a widely used immunomodulatory medication, on COVID-19 in an allergic population are very limited. To investigate the incidence and severity of COVID-19 among moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis (AD) patients treated with dupilumab, a retrospective cross-sectional survey was conducted among patients with moderate-to-severe AD who presented at the Department of Allergy of Tongji Hospital from 15 January 2023 to 31 January 2023. Healthy individuals matched for gender and age were also enrolled as a control. All subjects were asked about their demographic characteristics, past medical history, COVID-19 vaccination history, and medications, as well as the presence and duration of individual COVID-19-related symptoms. A total of 159 moderate-to-severe AD patients and 198 healthy individuals were enrolled in the study. Among the AD patients, 97 patients were treated with dupilumab, and 62 patients did not receive any biologicals or systemic treatments (topical treatment group). The proportions of people who were not infected with COVID in the dupilumab treatment group, topical treatment group and healthy control group were 10.31%, 9.68% and 19.19%, respectively (p = 0.057). There was no significant difference in COVID-19-related symptom scores among all groups (p = 0.059). The hospitalization rates were 3.58% in the topical treatment group and 1.25% in the healthy control group, and no patient was hospitalized in the dupilumab treatment group (p = 0.163). Compared with healthy control group and topical treatment group, the dupilumab treatment group had the shortest COVID-19-associated disease duration (dupilumab treatment group, 4.15 ± 2.85 d vs. topical treatment group, 5.43 ± 3.15 d vs. healthy control group, 6.09 ± 4.29 d; p = 0.001). Among the AD patients treated with dupilumab for different times, there was no appreciable difference (1 year group, 2.8 ± 1.32 d; p = 0.183). Dupilumab treatment shortened the duration of COVID-19 in patients with moderate-to-severe AD. AD patients can continue their dupilumab treatment during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Multiview stereo (MVS) achieves efficient 3D reconstruction on Lambertian surfaces and strongly textured regions. However, the reconstruction of weakly textured regions, especially planar surfaces in weakly textured regions, still faces significant challenges due to the fuzzy matching problem of photometric consistency. In this paper, we propose a multiview stereo for recovering planar surfaces guided by confidence calculations, resulting in the construction of large-scale 3D models for high-resolution image scenes. Specifically, a confidence calculation method is proposed to express the reliability degree of plane hypothesis. It consists of multiview consistency and patch consistency, which characterize global contextual information and local spatial variation, respectively. Based on the confidence of plane hypothesis, the proposed plane supplementation generates new reliable plane hypotheses. The new planes are embedded in the confidence-driven depth estimation. In addition, an adaptive depth fusion approach is proposed to allow regions with insufficient visibility to be effectively fused into the dense point clouds. The experimental results illustrate that the proposed method can lead to a 3D model with competitive completeness and high accuracy compared with state-of-the-art methods.

The bio-refining process of bamboo is more challenging compared to wood due to its dense and stabilized complex polymer structure, as well as its abundance of degradation-resistant components. Consequently, the bio-refining of bamboo requires more energy and time consumption compared to the bio-refining of wood. In this study, co-cultured microorganisms were utilized for the pretreatment of bamboo to improve pulping performance, reduce consumption, and increase efficiency. These microorganisms were constructed by combining environmental microorganisms found in bamboo pulp with Bacillus sp. that were self-screened. The results of 16S rRNA analysis showed that the genera Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Bacteroidota, and Actinobacteriota gradually became dominant during the treatment process. Additionally, the PICRUSt results indicated that the co-culture microbial consortium C strategy strengthened key enzyme activities related to the degradation of bamboo lignocelluloses. The microbial consortium pretreatment resulted in removing lignin and hemicellulose at rates of 21.96% and 26.21%, respectively. This process also caused a decrease in the crystalline index, indicating the presence of disordered crystalline regions. This change was beneficial for the subsequent Kraft pulping process. Compared to the conventional bamboo pulp, the yield of pretreated bamboo pulp increased slightly, while the cellulose purity and paper properties were significantly superior. The obtained Kraft pulp, which underwent microbiological pretreatment, met the requirements for superior Kraft pulp products despite a 65 min decrease in cooking time and a 10 °C decline in maximum cooking temperature. This study proves that co-cultured microbial consortium used for pretreating bamboo are beneficial for bamboo Kraft pulping. This approach can be considered environmentally friendly and leads to energy saving and cost reduction in bamboo bio-refining processes.

With the development of science and technology, the function of waterborne coatings has been advanced to a higher standard, which requires researchers to innovate and expand the research on them. Aloe-emodin is a natural material with antibacterial properties. Applying its antibacterial effect to the coating can enrich its function and meet the diversified needs of consumers. In this study, the urea-formaldehyde resin was used as the wall material and the aloe-emodin as the core material to prepare the microcapsules. The coating rate, yield, and morphology of the microcapsules were characterized. Through an orthogonal experiment and a single factor experiment, the optimization scheme of microcapsule preparation was explored. The results indicated that the optimum preparation process of aloe-emodin microcapsules was as follows: the mass ratio of core material to wall material was 1:15, the molar ratio of urea to formaldehyde was 1:1.2, the temperature of microencapsulation was 50 °C, and the stirring speed of microencapsulation was 600 rpm. On this basis, the aloe-emodin microcapsules with 0%, 1.0%, 3.0%, 6.0%, 9.0%, and 12.0% contents were added to the waterborne coating to prepare the paint films, and their influence on the antibacterial and optical properties of the waterborne paint films was explored. The results demonstrated that the aloe-emodin microcapsules had antibacterial activity. When the content was 6.0%, the comprehensive performance of the film was better. The antibacterial rate of the film against Escherichia coli was 68.1%, and against Staphylococcus aureus it was 60.7%. The color difference of the film was 59.93, and the glossiness at 60° was 7.8%. In this study, the microcapsules that can improve the antibacterial performance of water-based coatings were prepared, which can expand the application of water-based coatings and provide a reference for the study of the functionalization of water-based coatings.

This report describes maxillary antral pseudocyst drift after maxillary sinus floor augmentation through osteotome sinus floor elevation with simultaneous implant placement. 3D Slicer was used to measure the pseudocyst and maxilla for the placement of the implants; follow-up visits were scheduled at 6, 12, and 22 months. No adverse effects were observed during or after surgery, and all implants exhibited osseointegration without mobility. At 6 months after surgery, the pseudocyst had moved posterolaterally from the preoperative position near the anterior medial maxillary sinus, then returned to its original position at 12 months. However, it had remigrated to the posterolateral position at 22 months. The preoperative volume of the pseudocyst was 3.795 mm3; it was 2.370, 3.439, and 2.930 mm3 at 6, 12, and 22 months after surgery, respectively. The changes in pseudocyst drift and volume did not have a substantial negative influence on the implants, presumably because of cystic attachment and the recurrence of multiple pseudocysts at different locations. The risks associated with changes in a pseudocyst can be avoided, if an appropriate treatment plan is selected.

Predictive current control (PCC) is an advanced control strategy for permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM). When the motor drive system is undisturbed, predictive current control exhibits a good dynamic response speed and steady−state performance, but the conventional PCC control performance of PMSM that depends on the motor body model is vulnerable to parameter perturbation. Aiming at this problem, an improved model−free predictive current control (IMFPCC) strategy based on a high−gain disturbance observer (HGDO) is proposed in this paper. The proposed strategy is introduced with the idea of model−free control, relying only on the system input and output to build an ultra−local current prediction model, which gets rid of the constraints of the motor body parameters. In the paper, the ultra−local structure is optimized by comparing and analyzing the equation of the state of the classical ultra−local structure and PMSM system. The system’s current state variables are incorporated into the ultra−local system modeling, as a result, the current estimation errors existing in the classical ultra−local structure are eliminated. For the unmodeled and parametric perturbation part of the ultra−local system, a high−gain disturbance observer is designed to estimate it in real time. Finally, the proposed IMFPCC strategy is compared with the conventional model−based predictive current control (MPCC) and the conventional model−free predictive current control (CMFPCC) in simulation and experiment. The results show that the current steady−state error of the IMFPCC strategy in the case of parameter variation is only 50% of the MPCC method, which proves the effectiveness and correctness of the proposed strategy.

Influenza A virus (IAV) infection has traditionally been a serious problem in animal husbandry and human public health security. Recently, many studies identified that long noncoding RNAs play an important role in the antiviral immune response after the infection of the influenza virus. However, there are still lots of IAV-related lncRNAs that have not been well-characterized. Using RNA sequencing analysis, we identified a lncRNA, named Serpina3i Activation Associated lncRNA (SAAL), which can be significantly upregulated in mice after IAV infection. In this study, we found that overexpression of SAAL inhibited the replication of A/WSN/33(WSN). SAAL upregulated Serpina3i with or without WSN infection. Overexpression of Serpina3i reduced influenza virus infection. Meanwhile, knockdown of Serpina3i enhanced the replication of WSN. Furthermore, knockdown of Serpina3i abolished the SAAL-mediated decrease in WSN infection. Overexpression of SAAL or Serpina3i positively regulated the transcription of interferon β (IFN-β) and several critical ISGs after WSN infection. In conclusion, we found that the novel lncRNA SAAL is a critical anti-influenza regulator by upregulating the mRNA level of Serpina3i.

(1) Background: The prevalence of allergic rhinitis (AR) and asthma has increased rapidly in China. However, perceptions of respiratory allergies and barriers to their management have not attracted enough attention. (2) Objective: To investigate the prevalence of, parents’ perceptions of and their unmet needs for information concerning respiratory allergies in a 3- to 16-year-old children population. (3) Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted from June to July 2021 in three schools in Wuhan, China. A total of 1963 participants were recruited through cluster sampling for their parents to complete an online questionnaire regarding respiratory allergic symptoms. The diagnosis of respiratory allergies was based on self-reported symptoms and face-to-face physician evaluation. All the participants with respiratory allergies were asked to complete the Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire (B-IPQ), the Asthma Knowledge Questionnaire (AKQ) and a questionnaire regarding their unmet needs for disease management. (4) Results: The prevalence of respiratory allergies was 29.3% (576/1963) in the 3- to 16-year-old population, among whom AR accounted for 25.7%; asthma, 1.8% and AR-complicated asthma (AR&Asthma), 1.9%. The total B-IPQ score was 40.2 ± 10.9 in the participants with respiratory allergies, and there were no differences among the AR, asthma and AR&Asthma groups (all p > 0.05). The B-IPQ score correlated significantly with symptom onset time and a history of atopic dermatitis (p < 0.01). Nearly one fifth, 18.9%, of the participants with respiratory allergies never went to hospital for treatment, but those with higher B-IPQ scores were more likely to seek professional treatment (p < 0.001). The accuracy rates of AKQ were 72.5% in the participants with asthma and 76.7% in those without asthma (p = 0.147). Among the 576 participants with respiratory allergies, 568 (98.6%) had tried to obtain disease-management information from online platforms, and 55.5% (315/568) were dissatisfied with current platforms; the reasons included incomprehensive contents of illness (45.7%), lack of voice from leading experts (40.3%), too many advertisements (37.5%) and similar contents on different platforms (36.8%). (5) Conclusions: The prevalence of respiratory allergies is high in the 3- to 16-years old population in Wuhan, China. Yet the parents’ perceptions of respiratory allergies and knowledge of asthma are insufficient. It is crucial to increase parents’ awareness of the illness and facilitate their access to truly informative and professional platforms.

Underwater acoustic signal separation is a key technique for underwater communications. The existing methods are mostly model-based, and cannot accurately characterize the practical underwater acoustic communication environment. They are only suitable for binary signal separation and cannot handle multivariate signal separation. However, recurrent neural networks (RNNs) show a powerful ability to extract the features of temporal sequences. Inspired by this, in this paper, we present a data-driven approach for underwater acoustic signal separation using deep learning technology. We use a bidirectional long short-term memory (Bi-LSTM) approach to explore the features of a time–frequency (T-F) mask, and propose a T-F-mask-aware Bi-LSTM for signal separation. Taking advantage of the sparseness of the T-F image, the designed Bi-LSTM network is able to extract the discriminative features for separation, which further improves the separation performance. In particular, this method breaks through the limitations of the existing methods and not only achieves good results in multivariate separation but also effectively separates signals when they are mixed with 40 dB Gaussian noise signals. The experimental results show that this method can achieve a 97% guarantee ratio (PSR), and the average similarity coefficient of the multivariate signal separation is stable above 0.8 under high noise conditions. It should be noted that our model can only handle known signals such as test signals for calibration.

The N6-methyladenosine (m6A) RNA modification can regulate autophagy to modulate the growth and development of tumors, but the mechanism of m6A modification for the regulation of autophagy in hepatocellular carcinoma cells (HCC) remains unclear. In the study, the knockdown of the Wilms’ tumor 1-associating protein (WTAP) was made in HCC to study the correlation between m6A modification and autophagy. A fluorescent confocal microscopy analysis showed that the knockdown of WTAP could facilitate the autophagy of HCC. A Western blot analysis showed that the level of p-AMPK was decreased in WTAP-knockdown HCC cells. Additionally, LKB1, the upstream kinase of AMPK, was regulated by WTAP and it could mediate the phosphorylation of AMPK in an m6A-dependent manner. Further studies revealed that the knockdown of WTAP could reduce the level of LKB1 mRNA with m6A. This could result in the increased stability of LKB1 mRNA to promote its expression. The knockdown of WTAP could upregulate the level of autophagy and inhibit HCC proliferation. However, the overexpression of WTAP could resist autophagic cell death.

Chemo and radiation therapies are the most commonly used therapies for cancer, but they can induce DNA damage, resulting in the apoptosis of host cells. DNA double-stranded breaks (DSBs) are the most lethal form of DNA damage in cells, which are constantly caused by a wide variety of genotoxic agents, both environmentally and endogenously. To maintain genomic integrity, eukaryotic organisms have developed a complex mechanism for the repair of DNA damage. Researches reported that many cellular long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) were involved in the response of DNA damage. The roles of lncRNAs in DNA damage response can be regulated by the dynamic modification of N6-adenosine methylation (m6A). The cellular accumulation of DNA damage can result in various diseases, including cancers. Additionally, lncRNAs also play roles in controlling the gene expression and regulation of autophagy, which are indirectly involved with individual development. The dysregulation of these functions can facilitate human tumorigenesis. In this review, we summarized the origin and overview function of lncRNAs and highlighted the roles of lncRNAs involved in the repair of DNA damage.

In the present work, different concentrations of Cu ion (1, 2, 5 and 10 wt %) were doped in the TiO2 film by a sol-gel method and dip coating process. The morphology of the Cu-doped TiO2 films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the results showed that the doped Cu made no change to the TiO2 films. The nitric oxide (NO) release experiment showed that these Cu-doped surfaces showed the ability of catalytic decomposition of exogenous donor S-nitroso-N-acetyl-penicillamine (SNAP) to generate (NO). Based on fluorescence analysis and CCK-8 quantitative results, such films had the ability to inhibit smooth muscle cells adhesion, proliferation and migration with SNAP in vitro. The macrophage adhesion assay and anti-bacterial test proved that such Cu-doped TiO2 films also possessed anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial abilities. All the abilities above showed positive correlation with the amounts of the doped Cu. This study suggested that the Cu-doped TiO2 films were capable of generating physiological levels of NO in the presence of endogenous donor S-nitrosothiols (RSNO), endowing the TiO2 films with anti-hyperplasia, anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial abilities.

Nowadays, a variety of materials are employed to make numerous medical devices, including metals, polymers, ceramics, and others. Blood-contact devices are one of the major classes of these medical devices, and they have been widely applied in clinical settings. Blood-contact devices usually need to have good mechanical properties to maintain clinical performance. Metal materials are one desirable candidate to fabricate blood-contact devices due to their excellent mechanical properties and machinability, although the blood compatibility of existing blood-contact devices is better than other medical devices, such as artificial joints and artificial crystals. However, blood coagulation still occurs when these devices are used in clinical settings. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a new generation of blood-contact devices with fewer complications, and the key factor is to develop novel biomaterials with good blood compatibility. In this work, one albumin biopassive polyallylamine film was successfully established onto the 316L stainless steel (SS) surface. The polyallylamine film was prepared by plasma polymerization in the vacuum chamber, and then polyallylamine film was annealed at 150 °C for 1 h. The chemical compositions of the plasma polymerized polyallylamine film (PPAa) and the annealed polyallylamine film (HT-PPAa) were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectrum (FTIR). Then, the wettability, surface topography, and thickness of the PPAa and HT-PPAa were also evaluated. HT-PPAa showed increased stability when compared with PPAa film. The major amino groups remained on the surface of HT-PPAa after annealing, indicating that this could be a good platform for numerous molecules’ immobilization. Subsequently, the bovine serum albumin (BSA) was immobilized onto the HT-PPAa surface. The successful introduction of the BSA was confirmed by the FTIR and XPS detections. The blood compatibility of these modified films was evaluated by platelets adhesion and activation assays. The number of the platelets that adhered on BSA-modified HT-PPAa film was significantly decreased, and the activation degree of the adhered platelets was also decreased. These data revealed that the blood compatibility of the polyallylamine film was improved after BSA immobilized. This work provides a facile and effective approach to develop novel surface treatment for new-generation blood-contact devices with improved hemocompatibility.

Drug-eluting stents (DES) have been widely applied for saving the life of patients with coronary artery diseases (CADs). However, conventional polymers such as polylactic acid (PLA) and poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA), which are widely applied for drug-eluting stents studies, have serious bulk erosion problems, like high local acidity and poor mechanical properties. Instead, we chose surface erosion polymer poly (1, 3-trimethylene carbonate) (PTMC) as a drug carrier in this study. Here, we fabricated and characterized a novel durable-polymer drug-eluting 316 L stainless steel (SS) stent, in which the inner surface was coated with a Ti⁻O film using the magnetron sputtering method to promote the growth of endothelial cells (ECs). On the outer layer of the stent, first, a Ti⁻O film was deposited and, then, on top of it a rapamycin-loaded PTMC coat was deposited using the ultrasonic atomization spray method. This dual coating inhibited the migration and expansion of smooth muscle cells (SMCs). The drug coating also inhibited the adhesion/activation of platelets. In tests on dogs, it was found the novel stent promoted re-endothelialization and reduced restenosis, in contrast to the plain SS stent. Thus, the novel stent may have promise for use in treating patients with CAD.

To effectively de-noise the Gaussian white noise and periodic narrow-band interference in the background noise of partial discharge ultra-high frequency (PD UHF) signals in field tests, a novel de-noising method, based on a single-channel blind source separation algorithm, is proposed. Compared with traditional methods, the proposed method can effectively de-noise the noise interference, and the distortion of the de-noising PD signal is smaller. Firstly, the PD UHF signal is time-frequency analyzed by S-transform to obtain the number of source signals. Then, the single-channel detected PD signal is converted into multi-channel signals by singular value decomposition (SVD), and background noise is separated from multi-channel PD UHF signals by the joint approximate diagonalization of eigen-matrix method. At last, the source PD signal is estimated and recovered by the l1-norm minimization method. The proposed de-noising method was applied on the simulation test and field test detected signals, and the de-noising performance of the different methods was compared. The simulation and field test results demonstrate the effectiveness and correctness of the proposed method.

Background: Individuals with Down syndrome are at a higher risk of cardiac, renal, and other health issues due to a complex disease physiology. However, few data exist on long-term disease risks to guide prevention and care. We aimed to determine the 10-year incidence of cardiac, renal, and urinary tract complications in Down syndrome versus matched controls. Methods: This retrospective cohort study utilized a large collaborative database. We identified 32,444 patients with Down syndrome and matched controls, excluding those with pre-follow-up target events. Covariates included demographics, lifestyle factors, and comorbidities. Outcomes were ischemic heart disease, hypertension, hypothyroidism, epilepsy, urinary tract infections and chronic kidney disease. We calculated unadjusted and adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) using Cox regression and plotted Kaplan–Meier survival curves. Findings: Over 10 years, Down syndrome patients showed a 3.7-fold higher ischemic heart disease risk (95% CI: 3.0–4.6) and a 1.6-fold higher hypertension risk (95% CI: 1.4–1.8) versus controls. Hypothyroidism (HR = 2.0; 95% CI: 1.7–2.4), epilepsy (HR = 4.5; 95% CI: 3.5–5.8), and urinary tract infection (HR = 3.9; 95% CI: 3.4–4.6) risks were also higher. Chronic kidney disease risk was 2.7-fold greater (95% CI: 2.1–3.5). Survival analysis confirmed a significantly higher incidence of all outcomes in Down syndrome (p < 0.0001). Interpretation: This large study found major health challenges in Down syndrome, with risks 3- to 5-fold higher for chronic conditions versus matched controls over 10 years. Though survival remains high with proper care, focusing resources on the prevention and management of complications in this high-risk group can optimize well-being across the lifespan. Future research accounting for limitations here would provide definitive estimates of disease risk in Down syndrome to guide targeted health strategies.

Thiopurine methyltransferase (TPMT) is the rate-limiting enzyme in Azathioprine (AZA) metabolization. Although studies have discussed the association between the TPMT polymorphisms and myelosuppression, the data about the relationship between TPMT genotypes and hepatoxicity in Asian patients remain limited. This study investigated the correlation between TPMT polymorphisms and AZA-related hepatotoxicity. This study enrolled the patients who had prior exposure to AZA from the Taichung Veterans General Hospital (TCVGH)-Taiwan Precision Medicine Initiative (TPMI) cohort. Genetic variants were determined using a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) array. Participants were accordingly categorized into normal metabolizer (NM) and non-normal metabolizer (non-NM) groups. From the TCVGH-TPMI cohort, we included 50 TPMT non-NM patients, including 1 poor metabolizer (PM), 49 intermediate metabolizers (IMs), and 1000 NM patients. The non-NM genotype was associated with hepatotoxicity compared with the NM genotype (hazard ratio (HR): 3.85, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.83–8.10). In the non-NM group, the 3-year cumulative incidence of hepatotoxicity was higher than that in the NM group at 8.5% in the first year and 18.6% in the second and third years (p < 0.001). A TPMT non-NM genotype was associated with the occurrence of hepatotoxicity following AZA therapy. Preemptive testing helps individualize AZA therapy by minimizing the risk of hepatotoxicity.

Aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) and ochratoxin A (OTA), which are occasionally detected in milk and commercial baby foods, could easily enter and reach the gastrointestinal tract, posing impairment to the first line of defense and causing dysfunction of the tissue. The objective of this study was to investigate the immunostimulatory roles of individual and combined AFM1 and OTA on the immature intestine. Thus, we used ELISA assays to evaluate the generation of cytokines from ex vivo CD-1 fetal mouse jejunum induced by AFM1 and OTA and explored the related regulatory pathways and pivot genes using RNA-seq analysis. It was found that OTA exhibited much stronger ability in stimulating pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-6 from jejunum tissues than AFM1 (OTA of 4 μM versus AFM1 of 50 μM), whereas the combination of the two toxins seemed to exert antagonistic actions. In addition, transcriptomics also showed that most gene members in the enriched pathway ‘cytokine–cytokine receptor interaction’ were more highly expressed in OTA than the AFM1 group. By means of PPI network analysis, NFKB1 and RelB were regarded as hub genes in response to OTA but not AFM1. In the human FHs 74 Int cell line, both AFM1 and OTA enhanced the content of reactive oxygen species, and the oxidative response was more apparent in OTA-treated cells in comparison with AFM1. Furthermore, OTA and AFM1 + OTA raised the protein abundance of p50/RelB, and triggered the translocation of the dimer from cytosol to nucleus. Therefore, the experimental data ex vivo and in vitro showed that OTA-induced inflammation was thought to be bound up with the up-regulation and translocation of NF-κB, though AFM1 seemed to have no obvious impact. Since it was the first attempt to uncover the appearances and inner mechanisms regarding inflammation provoked by AFM1 and OTA on immature intestinal models, further efforts are needed to understand the detailed metabolic steps of the toxin in cells and to clarify their causal relationship with the signals proposed from current research.

Background. Anti-melanoma differentiation-associated gene 5 (MDA-5) antibody is associated with respiratory failure and death in patients with idiopathic inflammatory myositis (IIM) and interstitial lung disease (ILD). This study aimed to investigate clinical parameters associated with mortality in anti-MDA-5 antibody-positive patients. Methods. We retrospectively reviewed the clinical and laboratory data, and pulmonary function test results in 55 anti-MDA-5 antibody-positive patients. A comparison was made between the survivors and non-survivors at the 12-month follow-up. Results. A total of 13 patients (23.6%) died within 12 months. Non-survivors had higher GAP scores (gender, age, and physiology score for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis) (1 vs. 6, p < 0.01) and CA-153 (16.4 vs. 72.9, p < 0.01). In addition, rapid progressive ILD, fever, peak ferritin, leukocyte count, lactate dehydrogenase, CT score, intravenous immunoglobulin, mycophenolic acid, CMV infections, pneumocystis pneumonia, and pneumothorax were significantly associated with increased risks of 1-year mortality, while forced vital capacity, forced expiratory volume in one second, and diffusion capacity for carbon monoxide were correlated with decreased risk of 1-year mortality. Conclusions. Our study results suggest that GAP scores and CA-153 could be prognostic factors for 1-year mortality in anti-MDA-5 antibody-positive patients. A prompt pulmonary function test and CA-153 are essential for these patients to guide further management.

Background: Lupus nephritis (LN) often lead to end-stage renal disease in systemic lupus erythematosus patients. This study aimed to investigate the clinical application of renal gallium-67 scans for determining renal histological parameters in LN patients. Methods: Between 2006 and 2018, 237 biopsy-proven and 35 repeat biopsies LN patients who underwent renal gallium scans before or after biopsy were included for analysis. The classification and scoring of LN were assessed according to the International Society of Nephrology/Renal Pathology Society. A delayed 48-h gallium scan was performed and interpreted by semiquantitative methods using left kidney/spine (K/S) ratio. The renal histological results were compared with gallium uptake. Results: Out of 237 participants, 180 (76%) had proliferative LN. Baseline gallium left K/S ratio was significantly higher in class IV LN as compared to class III (median (interquartile range, IQR): 1.16 (1.0–1.3), 0.95 (0.9–1.1), respectively, p < 0.001). Furthermore, changes in gallium uptake between two biopsies were positively correlated with changes activity index (r = 0.357, p = 0.035), endocapillary hypercellularity (r = 0.385, p = 0.032), and neutrophils infiltration (r = 0.390, p = 0.030) in renal pathology. Conclusions: Renal gallium uptake is associated with active inflammation in LN. Changes in renal gallium uptake positively correlated with changes in activity index in renal pathology.

This study aimed to compare the test results of anti-double-stranded DNA (anti-dsDNA) antibodies obtained using chemiluminescent immunoassay (CIA) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and investigate predictors of inconsistent results. This retrospective study included 502 patients who underwent CIA and ELISA to determine their anti-dsDNA antibody values within a year. We compared the diagnostic power for SLE, disease activity, and predictive power for lupus nephritis (LN). A multivariate analysis was performed to determine the predictors of inconsistencies. CIA and ELISA were moderately correlated in terms of their consistency (Cronbach’s α = 0.571), and yielded comparably favorable results in terms of SLE diagnostic power and SLE disease activity. However, if the patient had LN, CIA displayed higher predictive power than ELISA (0.620 vs. 0.555, p = 0.026). Compared with the CIA/ELISA double-positive group, the inconsistent group had lower anti-C1q circulating immune complexes (CIC) antibody values (OR: 0.42, 95% CI: 0.18–0.94, p = 0.036), and lower SLEDAI scores (≥4) (OR: 0.33, 95% CI: 0.14–0.79, p = 0.013). Anti-dsDNA antibody detection with CIA exhibited higher predictability for diagnosing LN than did ELISA. In the event of inconsistencies between anti-dsDNA methods, SLE disease activity and CIC test values should be considered simultaneously.

This article considers an inventory model for non-instantaneous deteriorating items with expiration dates, such as seasonal items, first-hand vegetables, and fruits. Interestingly, an inspection will be performed to manage the quality of the items during the state of no deterioration because it is difficult to purchase items with 100% perfection. Additionally, we assume that the upstream member has the power of controlling or influencing downstream members’ decisions. That is, the supplier asks the retailer for a partial advance payment to avoid cancellation of orders and offers them a credit payment to stimulate sales; in turn, the customer must pay some cash when placing an order and pay the remainder in credit for the retailer. The goal of this article is to determine an optimal replenishment cycle and the total annual cost function, so we explore the functional properties of the total annual cost function and show that the total annual cost function is convex. Theoretical analysis of the optimal properties shows the existence and uniqueness of the optimal solution. Then, we obtain simple and easy solution procedures for the inventory system. Moreover, numerical analysis of the inventory model is conducted, and the corresponding examples are considered with a view to illustrating the application of the supply chain model that we have investigated in this article. Finally, in the concluding section, we have not only provided the motivation and the need for our usages of mathematical analytic solution procedures based upon the convexity, monotonicity (increasing and decreasing) and differentiability properties of the object function (that is, the total annual cost function), which involve some symmetry aspects of the object function, but we have also indicated the limitations and shortcomings in our investigation, which will naturally lead to some potential directions for further research on the supply chain model, which we have considered and mathematically analyzed in this article.

Hearing loss is one of the most prevalent sensory disabilities worldwide with huge social and economic burdens. The leading cause of sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) in children is congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection. Though the implementation of universal screening and early intervention such as antiviral or anti-inflammatory ameliorate the severity of CMV-associated diseases, direct and targeted therapeutics is still seriously lacking. The major hurdle for it is that the mechanism of CMV induced SNHL has not yet been well understood. In this review, we focus on the impact of CMV infection on the key players in inner ear development including the Wnt and Notch signaling pathways. Investigations on these interactions may gain new insights into viral pathogenesis and reveal novel targets for therapy.

Background: Antinuclear antibody pattern recognition is vital for autoimmune disease diagnosis but labor-intensive for manual interpretation. To develop an automated pattern recognition system, we established machine learning models based on the International Consensus on Antinuclear Antibody Patterns (ICAP) at a competent level, mixed patterns recognition, and evaluated their consistency with human reading. Methods: 51,694 human epithelial cells (HEp-2) cell images with patterns assigned by experienced medical technologists collected in a medical center were used to train six machine learning algorithms and were compared by their performance. Next, we choose the best performing model to test the consistency with five experienced readers and two beginners. Results: The mean F1 score in each classification of the best performing model was 0.86 evaluated by Testing Data 1. For the inter-observer agreement test on Testing Data 2, the average agreement was 0.849 (κ) among five experienced readers, 0.844 between the best performing model and experienced readers, 0.528 between experienced readers and beginners. The results indicate that the proposed model outperformed beginners and achieved an excellent agreement with experienced readers. Conclusions: This study demonstrated that the developed model could reach an excellent agreement with experienced human readers using machine learning methods.

Functional mineral water and related products are popular in some Asian countries as health drinks and, recently, have been employed in agricultural crop production as well as pest control. This study aimed to investigate the survival of mosquito vectors exposed to plant-derived functional mineral water produced by terahertz technology. The terahertz-based functional mineral water used in the current study not only decreased the hatching of Culex quinquefasciatus (Say) larvae but also showed concentration-dependent toxicity to the 3rd instar larvae and pupae of the three mosquito species tested. Aedes albopictus (Skuse) and Cx. quinquefasciatus pupae were more susceptible to terahertz-based functional mineral water than the larval stage, as indicated by their lower LC50. Lower concentrations (Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus) hatching, it could potentially be used for vector control at the larvae and pupae stages. The larvicidal and pupicidal activity of diluted terahertz-based functional mineral water gradually diminished after 24 h, indicating that it is a biodegradable and eco-friendly bioinsecticide. However, as the terahertz-based functional mineral water is also toxic to larvivorous predatory-copepods, it should not be utilized in aquatic environments where predatory-based mosquito control programs are employed.

Long non-coding RNA steroid receptor RNA activators (LncRNA SRAs) are implicated in the β-cell destruction of Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D), but functional association remains poorly understood. Here, we aimed to verify the role of LncRNA SRA regulation in β-cells. LncRNA SRAs were highly expressed in plasma samples and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from T1D patients. LncRNA SRA was strongly upregulated by high-glucose treatment. LncRNA SRA acts as a microRNA (miR)-146b sponge through direct sequence–structure interactions. Silencing of lncRNA SRA increased the functional genes of Tregs, resulting in metabolic reprogramming, such as decreased lactate levels, repressed lactate dehydrogenase A (LDHA)/phosphorylated LDHA (pLDHA at Tyr10) expression, decreased reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, increased ATP production, and finally, decreased β-cell apoptosis in vitro. There was a positive association between lactate level and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) level in the plasma from patients with T1D. Recombinant human interleukin (IL)-2 treatment repressed lncRNA SRA expression and activity in β-cells. Higher levels of lncRNA-SRA/lactate in the plasma are associated with poor regulation in T1D patients. LncRNA SRA contributed to T1D pathogenesis through the inhibition of miR-146b in β-cells, with activating signaling transduction of interleukin-1 receptor-associated kinase 1 (IRAK1)/LDHA/pLDHA. Taken together, LncRNA SRA plays a critical role in the function of β-cells.

The implications of boosting Omalizumab treatment (OT) in patients with severe allergic asthma (SAA) remain unclear. The study aimed to explore and compare the 12-month effectiveness between continuous, at least 10-month OT (continuation group) and four-month boost of Omalizumab (boost group) in adult patients with SAA. In this retrospective cohort study, clinical data were collected for further analysis. Of all participants (n = 124), a significant reduction in annual exacerbations (baseline = 0.8 ± 1.5, follow-up = 0.5 ± 1.0, p = 0.047 *) and improvement in small airway ventilation as evaluated by forced expiratory flow at 25–75% (baseline = 55.1 ± 11.1%, follow-up = 59.4 ± 8.4%, p < 0.001 *) were found in the continuation group (n = 110). By contrast, the boost group (n = 14) had significantly increased annual exacerbations (baseline = 0.7 ± 1.4, follow-up = 2.9 ± 3.6, p = 0.031 *) and impaired small airway function (baseline = 55.3 ± 12.9, follow-up = 52.1 ± 12.5, p = 0.026 *). Furthermore, the continuation group rather than the boost group had significant decreases in the frequency of oral corticosteroid (OCS) use as controllers (baseline = 32.7%, follow-up = 20.0%, p = 0.047 *; baseline = 50.0%, follow-up = 21.4%, p = 0.237, respectively) and OCS maintenance dose (mg/month) (baseline = 85.9 ± 180.8, follow-up = 45.8 ± 106.6, p = 0.020 *; baseline = 171.4 ± 221.5, follow-up = 50.0 ± 104.3, p = 0.064, respectively), and increases in asthma control test scores (baseline = 16.0 ± 3.0, follow-up = 19.8 ± 4.4, p < 0.001 *; baseline = 14.6 ± 3.8, follow-up = 19.7 ± 4.7, p = 0.050, respectively). Continuous OT would be beneficial for adult patients with SAA, while boost of Omalizumab would worsen their long-term outcomes.

(1) Background: Antifolate methotrexate (MTX) is the most common disease-modifying antirheumatic drug (DMARD) for treating human rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The mitochondrial-produced formate is essential for folate-mediated one carbon (1C) metabolism. The impacts of MTX on formate homeostasis in unknown, and rigorously controlled kinetic studies can greatly help in this regard. (2) Methods: Combining animal model (8-week old female C57BL/6JNarl mice, n = 18), cell models, stable isotopic tracer studies with gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) platforms, we systematically investigated how MTX interferes with the partitioning of mitochondrial and cytosolic formate metabolism. (3) Results: MTX significantly reduced de novo deoxythymidylate (dTMP) and methionine biosyntheses from mitochondrial-derived formate in cells, mouse liver, and bone marrow, supporting our postulation that MTX depletes mitochondrial 1C supply. Furthermore, MTX inhibited formate generation from mitochondria glycine cleavage system (GCS) both in vitro and in vivo. Folinate selectively rescued 1C metabolic pathways in a tissue-, cellular compartment-, and pathway-specific manner: folinate effectively reversed the inhibition of mitochondrial formate-dependent 1C metabolism in mouse bone marrow (dTMP, methionine, and GCS) and cells (dTMP and GCS) but not methionine synthesis in liver/liver-derived cells. Folinate failed to fully recover hepatic mitochondrial-formate utilization for methionine synthesis, suggesting that the efficacy of clinical folinate rescue in MTX therapy on hepatic methionine metabolism is poor. (4) Conclusion: Conducting studies in mouse and cell models, we demonstrate novel findings that MTX specifically depletes mitochondrial 1C supply that can be ameliorated by folinate supplementation except for hepatic transmethylation. These results imply that clinical use of low-dose MTX may particularly impede 1C metabolism via depletion of mitochondrial formate. The MTX induced systematic and tissue-specific formate depletion needs to be addressed more carefully, and the efficacy of folinate with respect to protecting against such depletion deserves to be evaluated in medical practice.

This study puts forward an efficient method for protein detection in virtue of the tremendous fluorescence enhancement property of 6-aza-2-thio-thymine protected gold nanoclusters (ATT-AuNCs). In-depth studies of the protein-induced photoluminescence enhancement mechanism illustrate the mechanism of the interaction between ATT-AuNCs and protein. This new-established probe enables feasible and sensitive quantification of the concentrations of total protein in real samples, such as human serum, human plasma, milk, and cell extracts. The results of this proposed method are in good agreement with those determined by the classical bicinchoninic acid method (BCA method).

It is known that cardiac and respiratory rhythms in electrocardiograms (ECGs) are highly nonlinear and non-stationary. As a result, most traditional time-domain algorithms are inadequate for characterizing the complex dynamics of the ECG. This paper proposes a new ECG sensor card and a statistical-based ECG algorithm, with the aid of a reduced binary pattern (RBP), with the aim of achieving faster ECG human identity recognition with high accuracy. The proposed algorithm has one advantage that previous ECG algorithms lack—the waveform complex information and de-noising preprocessing can be bypassed; therefore, it is more suitable for non-stationary ECG signals. Experimental results tested on two public ECG databases (MIT-BIH) from MIT University confirm that the proposed scheme is feasible with excellent accuracy, low complexity, and speedy processing. To be more specific, the advanced RBP algorithm achieves high accuracy in human identity recognition and is executed at least nine times faster than previous algorithms. Moreover, based on the test results from a long-term ECG database, the evolving RBP algorithm also demonstrates superior capability in handling long-term and non-stationary ECG signals.
