Coronary artery calcium scoring (CACS), a non-invasive measure of coronary atherosclerosis, has significantly enhanced cardiovascular (CV) risk assessment and stratification in asymptomatic individuals. More recently, a higher score for CAC has been associated with an increased risk of non-CV diseases and all-cause mortality. This review consolidated evidence supporting the role of CAC in assessing non-CV diseases, emphasizing its potential in early diagnosis and prognosis. We observed a strong association between CACS and non-CV diseases, viz., chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pulmonary embolism, pneumonia, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, osteoporosis, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease, nephrolithiasis, stroke, dementia, malignancies, and several autoimmune diseases. Also, CAC may aid in evaluating the risk of CV conditions developing secondary to the non-CV diseases mentioned earlier. Further evidence from prospective studies, intervention trials, and population-based behavioral studies is needed to establish CAC cutoff values and explore preventative care applications, facilitating their broader integration into healthcare practices.

By using piezoelectric materials, it is possible to convert clean and renewable energy sources into electrical energy. In this paper, the effect on the piezoelectro-elastic response of piezoelectric-fiber-reinforced nanocomposites by adding silica nanoparticles into the polyimide matrix is investigated by a micromechanical method. First, the Ji and Mori–Tanaka models are used to calculate the properties of the nanoscale silica-filled polymer. The nanoparticle agglomeration and silica–polymer interphase are considered in the micromechanical modeling. Then, considering the filled polymer as the matrix and the piezoelectric fiber as the reinforcement, the Mori–Tanaka model is used to estimate the elastic and piezoelectric constants of the piezoelectric fibrous nanocomposites. It was found that adding silica nanoparticles into the polymer improves the elastic and piezoelectric properties of the piezoelectric fibrous nanocomposites. When the fiber volume fraction is 60%, the nanocomposite with the 3% silica-filled polyimide exhibits 39%, 31.8%, and 37% improvements in the transverse Young’s modulus ET, transverse shear modulus GTL, and piezoelectric coefficient e31 in comparison with the composite without nanoparticles. Furthermore, the piezoelectro-elastic properties such as ET, GTL, and e31 can be improved as the nanoparticle diameter decreases. However, the elastic and piezoelectric constants of the piezoelectric fibrous nanocomposites decrease once the nanoparticles are agglomerated in the polymer matrix. A thick interphase with a high stiffness enhances the nanocomposite’s piezoelectro-elastic performance. Also, the influence of volume fractions of the silica nanoparticles and piezoelectric fibers on the nanocomposite properties is studied.

Background/Objectives: Intensive care unit (ICU) e-referrals are an important indicator for exploring potential deficiencies in critical care resources. This study aimed to examine the epidemiology and patterns of ICU e-referrals across all regions of Saudi Arabia during the COVID-19 pandemic using routinely collected data from April 2020 to December 2021. Methods: This descriptive epidemiological study analyzed data from the Saudi Medical Appointments and Referrals Centre (SMARC). This study reveals novel regional ICU e-referral patterns for critical cases using national unique digital health data, adding insights beyond the existing literature. Variables included age, sex, referral timing, reason, specialty, and region of origin. Descriptive statistics and mapping of administrative areas were performed based on e-referral request rates per 10,000 population. Results: During the study period, 36,619 patients had ICU e-referral requests. The mean age was 54.28 years, with males constituting 64.81% of requests. Out-of-scope e-referrals comprised 71.44% of requests. Referrals related to medical specialties, such as cardiology and pulmonology, were the most common (62.48%). Referral patterns showed peaks in July–August 2020 and May 2021. The Northern Border and Albaha areas had the highest request rates per population, potentially reflecting a higher proportion of severe cases requiring ICU-level care compared to other regions. Conclusions: The temporal pattern and geographic distribution of ICU e-referrals mirrored previously reported critical COVID-19 cases in Saudi Arabia. Preventive measures and vaccination programs contributed to a significant decline in ICU e-referral requests, suggesting a positive impact on controlling severe COVID-19 cases. Population-adjusted analysis revealed regional disparities, highlighting the importance of considering population size in healthcare resource management and policy.

The extension of the theory of generalized fractal–fractional calculus, named in this article as Martínez–Kaabar Fractal–Fractional (MKFF) calculus, is addressed to the field of integral equations. Based on the classic Adomian decomposition method, by incorporating the MKFF α,γ-integral operator, we establish the so-called extended Adomian decomposition method (EADM). The convergence of this proposed technique is also discussed. Finally, some interesting Volterra Integral equations of non-integer order which possess a fractal effect are solved via our proposed approach. The results in this work provide a novel approach that can be employed in solving various problems in science and engineering, which can overcome the challenges of solving various equations, formulated via other classical fractional operators.

In this work, some dynamical properties of Hill’s system are studied under the effect of continued fraction perturbation. The locations and kinds of equilibrium points are identified, and it is demonstrated that these points are saddle points and the general motion in their proximity is unstable. Furthermore, the curves of zero velocity and the regions of possible motion are defined at different Jacobian constant values. It is shown that the regions of forbidden motion increase with increasing Jacobian constant values and there is a noticeable decrease in the permissible regions of motion, leading to the possibility that the body takes a path far away from the primary body and escapes to take an unknown trajectory. Furthermore, the stability of perturbed motion is analyzed from the perspective of a linear sense, and it is observed that the linear motion is also unstable.

In this article, new results are investigated in the context of the recently introduced Abu-Shady–Kaabar fractional derivative. First, we solve the generalized Legendre fractional differential equation. As in the classical case, the generalized Legendre polynomials constitute notable solutions to the aforementioned fractional differential equation. In the sense of the fractional derivative of Abu-Shady–Kaabar, we establish important properties of the generalized Legendre polynomials such as Rodrigues formula and recurrence relations. Special attention is also devoted to another very important property of Legendre polynomials and their orthogonal character. Finally, the representation of a function f∈Lα2([−1,1]) in a series of generalized Legendre polynomials is addressed.

System-to-system communication via Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) plays a pivotal role in the seamless interaction among software applications and systems for efficient and automated service delivery. APIs facilitate the exchange of data and functionalities across diverse platforms, enhancing operational efficiency and user experience. However, this also introduces potential vulnerabilities that attackers can exploit to compromise system security, highlighting the importance of identifying and mitigating associated security risks. By examining the weaknesses inherent in these APIs using security open-intelligence catalogues like CWE and CAPEC and implementing controls from NIST SP 800-53, organizations can significantly enhance their security posture, safeguarding their data and systems against potential threats. However, this task is challenging due to evolving threats and vulnerabilities. Additionally, it is challenging to analyse threats given the large volume of traffic generated from API calls. This work contributes to tackling this challenge and makes a novel contribution to managing threats within system-to-system communication through API calls. It introduces an integrated architecture that combines deep-learning models, i.e., ANN and MLP, for effective threat detection from large API call datasets. The identified threats are analysed to determine suitable mitigations for improving overall resilience. Furthermore, this work introduces transparency obligation practices for the entire AI life cycle, from dataset preprocessing to model performance evaluation, including data and methodological transparency and SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) analysis, so that AI models are understandable by all user groups. The proposed methodology was validated through an experiment using the Windows PE Malware API dataset, achieving an average detection accuracy of 88%. The outcomes from the experiments are summarized to provide a list of key features, such as FindResourceExA and NtClose, which are linked with potential weaknesses and related threats, in order to identify accurate control actions to manage the threats.

The biomass filtrate of the endophytic bacterial strain Bacillus amyloliquefaciens Fa.2 was utilized for the eco-friendly production of silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs). The yellowish-brown color’s optical properties showed a maximum surface plasmon resonance at 415 nm. The morphological and elemental composition analysis reveals the formation of spherical shapes with sizes of 5–40 nm, and the Ag ion comprises the major component of the produced Ag-NPs. X-ray diffraction confirmed the crystalline structure, whereas dynamic light scattering reveals the high stability of synthesized Ag-NPs with a polydispersity index of 0.413 and a negative zeta potential value. The photocatalytic experiment showed the efficacy of Ag-NPs to degrade methylene blue with maximum percentages of 73.9 ± 0.5 and 87.4 ± 0.9% under sunshine and UV irradiation, respectively, compared with 39.8% under dark conditions after 210 min. Additionally, the reusability of Ag-NPs was still more active for the fifth run, with a percentage decrease of 11.6% compared with the first run. Interestingly, the biogenic Ag-NPs showed superior antimicrobial activity against different pathogenic Gram-negative bacteria (MIC = 6.25 µg mL−1), Gram-positive bacteria (MIC = 12.5 µg mL−1), and uni- and multicellular fungi (MIC = 12.5 µg mL−1). Moreover, the biosynthesized Ag-NPs could target cancer cells (Pc3 and Mcf7) at low concentrations compared with normal cell (Vero) lines. The IC50 of normal cells is 383.7 ± 4.1 µg mL−1 compared with IC50 Pc3 (2.5 ± 3.5 µg mL−1) and McF7 (156.1 ± 6.8 µg mL−1). Overall, the bacterially synthesized Ag-NPs showed multifunctional features to be used in environmental catalysis and biomedical applications.

In this study, a new generalized fractal–fractional (FF) derivative is proposed. By applying this definition to some elementary functions, we show its compatibility with the results of the FF derivative in the Caputo sense with the power law. The main elements of classical differential calculus are introduced in terms of this new derivative. Thus, we establish and demonstrate the basic operations with derivatives, chain rule, mean value theorems with their immediate applications and inverse function’s derivative. We complete the theory of generalized FF calculus by proposing a notion of integration and presenting two important results of integral calculus: the fundamental theorem and Barrow’s rule. Finally, we analytically solve interesting FF ordinary differential equations by applying our proposed definition.

Background and Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the role of the pre- and postoperative neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) in predicting intensive care unit (ICU) admission and postoperative length of stay (LOS) in bariatric surgery. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively analysed 96 patients who underwent bariatric surgery at our institution. The NLR and PLR were calculated in the pre- and postoperative stages. Changes in pre- and postoperative hematological ratios were compared using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. The optimal cutoff values and area under the curve (AUC) for each ratio were calculated using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. Multivariate linear regression analysis was used to assess the relationship between each ratio and the postoperative LOS after adjusting for age, sex, and American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) score. Results: The median age of our patients was 35.50 years, and 54.2% were male. The preoperative NLR showed a significant increase from 1.44 to 6.38 postoperatively (p < 0.001). The PLR increased from 107.08 preoperatively to 183.58 postoperatively, p < 0.001). ROC analysis showed that the postoperative NLR was a moderate to high predictor of ICU admission (AUC = 0.700, optimal cutoff point = 5.987). The postoperative PLR had less predictive power for ICU admission (AUC = 0.641, optimal cutoff point = 170.950). Ratios that had a statistically significant relationship with the postoperative LOS were the preoperative NLR (standardized β [95% CI]: 0.296 [0.115–0.598]), postoperative NLR (0.311 [0.034–0.161]), and postoperative PLR (0.236 [0.000–0.005]). Conclusions: The NLR and PLR demonstrated an independent relationship with the postoperative LOS after bariatric surgery and the predictive ability of ICU admission. Both ratios might be useful as simple markers to predict patient outcome after surgery.

Marine water quality significantly impacts human livelihoods and production such as fisheries, aquaculture, and tourism. Satellite remote sensing facilitates the predictions of large-area marine water quality without the need for frequent field work and sampling. Prediction of diffuse attenuation coefficient (Kd), which describes the speed at which light decays as it travels through water, obtained from satellite-derived ocean color products can reflect the overall water quality trends. However, current models inadequately explore the complex nonlinear features of Kd, and there are difficulties in achieving accurate long-term predictions and optimal computational efficiency. This study innovatively proposes a model called Remote Sensing-Informer-based Kd Prediction (RSIKP). The proposed RSIKP is characterized by a distinctive Multi-head ProbSparse self-attention mechanism and generative decoding structure. It is designed to comprehensively and accurately capture the long-term variation characteristics of Kd in complex water environments while avoiding error accumulation, which has a significant advantage in multi-dataset experiments due to its high efficiency in long-term prediction. A multi-dataset experiment is conducted at different prediction steps, using 70 datasets corresponding to 70 study areas in Hangzhou Bay and Beibu Gulf. The results show that RSIKP outperforms the five prediction models based on Artificial Neural Networks (ANN, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU), Long Short-Term Memory Recurrent Neural Networks (LSTM-RNN), and Long Short-Term Memory Networks (LSTM)). RSIKP captures the complex influences on Kd more effectively to achieve higher prediction accuracy compared to other models. It shows a mean improvement of 20.6%, 31.1%, and 22.9% on Mean Absolute Error (MAE), Mean Square Error (MSE), and Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE). Particularly notable is its outstanding performance in the long time-series predictions of 60 days. This study develops a cost-effective and accurate method of marine water quality prediction, providing an effective prediction tool for marine water quality management.

The use of glass-fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars as an alternative to steel bars for reinforcing concrete (RC) structures has gained increasing attention in recent years. GFRP bars offer several advantages over steel bars, such as corrosion resistance, lightweight, high tensile strength, and non-magnetic properties. However, there are also some challenges and uncertainties associated with the behavior and performance of GFRP-reinforced concrete (GFRP-RC) structures, especially under compression and bonding behavior. Therefore, there is a need for comprehensive experimental investigations to validate the effectiveness of GFRP bars in concrete columns. This paper presents a study that aims to address these issues by conducting experimental tests on GFRP-RC columns. The experimental tests examine the mechanical properties of GFRP bars and their bond behavior with concrete, as well as the axial compressive behavior of GFRP-RC columns with different reinforcement configurations, tie spacing, and bar sizes. The findings reveal that GFRP bars demonstrate a comparable, if not superior, compressive capacity to traditional steel bars, significantly contributing to the load-bearing capacity of concrete columns. The study concludes with a set of recommendations for further exploration, underscoring the potential of GFRP bars in revolutionizing the construction industry.

This study aimed to determine the effect of supplementing liquid feeds with a mixture of ethyl esters of polyunsaturated fatty acid of linseed oil (EEPUFA; α-linolenic acid—64.5%, linoleic acid—16.1%, and oleic acid—19.4%) on feed intake, body weight gain, feed efficiency, and health of dairy calves. Thirty-six healthy female Holstein–Friesian calves (7 d of age, 41.2 ± 4.0 kg) were assigned to one of two treatment groups (18 calves per group), i.e., control or EEPUFA, and fed liquid feed (whole milk (WM) or milk replacer (MR)) either without or with 10 mL/d of EEPUFA supplementation, respectively, for 56 days (till 63 d of age). Average daily intake of WM and MR was similar between treatments (p = 0.94). Average daily total DM intake and average daily starter feed DM intake were higher for the EEPUFA group (p = 0.05 and p = 0.01, respectively). The average daily body weight gain was also higher for the EEPUFA group (55 g/d; p = 0.03), although final body weight turned out not to be significantly different between groups (75.6 kg vs. 79.0 kg, control vs. EEPUFA, respectively; p = 0.20). Supplementation of liquid feeds with EEPUFA did not affect feed efficiency (p = 0.37) and most of investigated health parameters. However, the percentage of days with diarrhea relative to the number of days receiving treatment was higher in the control group than the EEPUFA group (76 vs. 42, respectively; p = 0.04). Although the results of this preliminary study are promising, further research is needed to establish the dose effect of EEPUFA on the performance and health of calves.

Multiple Sequence Alignment (MSA) plays a pivotal role in bioinformatics, facilitating various critical biological analyses, including the prediction of unknown protein structures and functions. While numerous methods are available for MSA, bioinspired algorithms stand out for their efficiency. Despite the growing research interest in addressing the MSA challenge, only a handful of comprehensive reviews have been undertaken in this domain. To bridge this gap, this study conducts a thorough analysis of bioinspired-based methods for MSA through a systematic literature review (SLR). By focusing on publications from 2010 to 2024, we aim to offer the most current insights into this field. Through rigorous eligibility criteria and quality standards, we identified 45 relevant papers for review. Our analysis predominantly concentrates on bioinspired-based techniques within the context of MSA. Notably, our findings highlight Genetic Algorithm and Memetic Optimization as the most commonly utilized algorithms for MSA. Furthermore, benchmark datasets such as BAliBASE and SABmark are frequently employed in evaluating MSA solutions. Structural-based methods emerge as the preferred approach for assessing MSA solutions, as revealed by our systematic literature review. Additionally, this study explores current trends, challenges, and unresolved issues in the realm of bioinspired algorithms for MSA, offering practitioners and researchers valuable insights and comprehensive understanding of the field.

Despite recent progress, statistics show an urgent need for growth in the numbers of underrepresented minority (URM) students in STEM fields. An individual development plan (IDP) has been used to assist Ph.D. trainees in exploring career paths, developing short- and long-term career goals, and creating action plans to achieve these goals. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) and many institutions require the completion of the IDP by graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and junior faculty mentees to enhance career development. However, little information exists regarding how motivated and behaviorally engaged undergraduate URM undergraduate students are in using IDP as a tool to develop their STEM career pathway. In this study, researchers present data from the motivation levels and behavioral engagement factors that are associated with the effectiveness of the IDP with 20 URM students recruited for the REP Summer program. A total of 85% of students strongly agreed that the IDP was most effective in assessing and reflecting on their academic and professional goals. The mentorship needs were met by 80% of the students, while 75% of the students agreed that the IDP was very effective in helping to identify short-term and long-term goals for their undergraduate studies. Moreover, 70% of the students were satisfied with the IDP in developing an action plan, identifying short-term and long-term goals for their professional careers, and assessing their scientific skills, interests, and values. URM students are intrinsically and extrinsically motivated to implement the IDP and pursue careers in STEM. Findings suggest that URM students’ motivation and behavioral engagement levels impact the effectiveness of the implemented IDP with these students. There is a need to identify factors that enhance the effectiveness of the IDP to determine how to maximize the career development of URM students in STEM programs.

The unit log-logistic distribution is a suitable choice for modeling data enclosed within the unit interval. In this paper, estimating the parameters of the unit-log-logistic distribution is performed through a Bayesian approach with non-informative priors. Specifically, we use Jeffreys, reference, and matching priors, with the latter depending on the interest parameter. We derive the corresponding posterior distributions and validate their propriety. The Bayes estimators are then computed using Markov Chain Monte Carlo techniques. To assess the finite sample performance of these Bayes estimators, we conduct Monte Carlo simulations, evaluating their mean squared errors and their coverage probabilities of the highest posterior density credible intervals. Finally, we use these priors to obtain estimations and credible sets for the parameters in an example of a real data set for illustrative purposes.

Smartphone use, particularly at night, has been shown to provoke various circadian sleep–wake rhythm disorders such as insomnia and excessive daytime tiredness. This relationship has been mainly scrutinized among patient groups with higher rates of smartphone usage, particularly adolescents and children. However, it remains obscure how smartphone usage impacts sleep parameters in adults, especially undergraduate college students. This study sought to (1) investigate the association between smartphone use (actual screen time) and four sleep parameters: Pittsburgh sleep quality score (PSQI), self-reported screen time, bedtime, and rise time; (2) compare the seven PSQI components between good and poor sleep quality subjects. In total, 264 undergraduate medical students (aged 17 to 25 years) were recruited from the Government Doon Medical College, Dehradun, India. All participants completed a sleep questionnaire, which was electronically shared via a WhatsApp invitation link. Hierarchical and multinomial regression analyses were performed in relation to (1) and (2). The average PSQI score was 5.03 ± 0.86, with approximately one in two respondents (48.3%) having a poor sleep index. Smartphone use significantly predicted respondents’ PSQI score (β = 0.142, p = 0.040, R2 = 0.027), perceived screen time (β = 0.113, p = 0.043, R2 = 343), bedtime (β = 0.106, p = 0.042, R2 = 045), and rise time (β = 0.174, p = 0.015, R2 = 0.028). When comparing poor-quality sleep (PSQI ≥ 5) to good-quality sleep (PSQI < 5), with good-quality sleep as the reference, except sleep efficiency and sleep medications (p > 0.05), five PSQI components declined significantly: subjective sleep quality (β = −0.096, p < 0.001); sleep latency (β = −0.034, p < 0.001); sleep duration (β = −0.038, p < 0.001); sleep disturbances (β = 1.234, p < 0.001); and sleep dysfunction (β = −0.077, p < 0.001). Consequently, public health policymakers should take this evidence into account when developing guidelines around smartphone use—i.e., the when, where, and how much smartphone use—to promote improved sleep behaviour and reduce the rate of sleep–wake rhythm disorders.

Background and Objectives: In 2020, one of the most important steps that were made was to give priority to the development of a COVID-19 vaccine to prevent the rising incidence of COVID-19 from continuing to rise. However, globally, there is a variable acceptance of the level of the COVID-19 vaccine. This study aims to explore Saudi parents’ willingness to vaccinate their children against COVID-19. Materials and Methods: This was a cross-sectional study; the online questionnaire was used to investigate the views of Saudi parents with children aged under 18 toward the immunization of their children against COVID-19. The data were gathered from 10 May 2022 to 31 October 2022. The data analysis uses SPSS version 20. A p-value of 0.05 or lower was regarded as statistically significant. Results: A total of 978 Saudi parents participated in this study. Most of the respondents were from the age group of 36–45 years with the educational qualification of high school and bachelor’s degree. Overall, it was observed that the majority, 98.2% of the respondents, disclosed that they needed more information (p = 0.004) about COVID-19 vaccine safety among children so that they could decide whether to vaccinate their child. About 91.4% of parents mention that vaccination against COVID-19 is not necessary for children (p = 0.001). About 68.3% of respondents agreed that getting vaccinated against COVID-19 could help Saudi Arabia control COVID-19 (p = 0.007, RI = 0.76). In terms of negative attitudes toward COVID-19 vaccination, 71.3% think that there will be severe side effects (p = 0.019, RI = 0.75); 67.7% think that the vaccine’s protection will only last for a short time (p = 0.055, RI = 0.72); 80.1% said they were afraid of getting vaccinated because of needle fear (p = 0.045, RI = 0.76), and 41.2% said lack of time was the main barrier to not vaccinating their child. Conclusions: Parents expressed concerns regarding the safety and efficacy of the COVID-19 vaccine, which might be some of the main factors influencing their decision to vaccinate their children. It is the need of the hour to take action to communicate, educate, and intervene with Saudi parents to enhance COVID-19 vaccination compliance rates across the board.

In the realm of bioinformatics, Multiple Sequence Alignment (MSA) is a pivotal technique used to optimize the alignment of multiple biological sequences, guided by specific scoring criteria. Existing approaches addressing the MSA challenge tend to specialize in distinct biological features, leading to variability in alignment outcomes for the same set of sequences. Consequently, this paper proposes an enhanced evolutionary-based approach that simplifies the sequence alignment problem without considering the sequences in the non-dominated solution. Our method employs a multi-objective optimization technique that uniquely excludes non-dominated solution sets, effectively mitigating computational complexities. Utilizing the Sum of Pairs and the Total Conserved Column as primary objective functions, our approach offers a novel perspective. We adopt an integer coding approach to enhance the computational efficiency, representing chromosomes with sets of integers during the alignment process. Using the SABmark and BAliBASE datasets, extensive experimentation is conducted to compare our method with existing ones. The results affirm the superior solution quality achieved by our approach compared to its predecessors. Furthermore, via the Wilcoxon signed-rank test, a statistical analysis underscores the statistical significance of our model’s improvement (p < 0.05). This comprehensive approach holds promise for advancing Multiple Sequence Alignment in bioinformatics.

To avoid overloading a network, it is critical to continuously monitor the natural environment and disseminate data streams in synchronization. Based on self-maintaining technology, this study presents a technique called self-configuration management (SCM). The purpose is to ensure consistency in the performance, functionality, and physical attributes of a wireless sensor network (WSN) over its lifetime. During device communication, the SCM approach delivers an operational software package for the radio board of system problematic nodes. We offered two techniques to help cluster heads manage autonomous configuration. First, we created a separate capability to determine which defective devices require the operating system (OS) replica. The software package was then delivered from the head node to the network’s malfunctioning device via communication roles. Second, we built an autonomous capability to automatically install software packages and arrange the time. The simulations revealed that the suggested technique was quick in transfers and used less energy. It also provided better coverage of system fault peaks than competitors. We used the proposed SCM approach to distribute homogenous sensor networks, and it increased system fault tolerance to 93.2%.

Background: The emergence of ChatGPT, a state-of-the-art language model developed by OpenAI, has introduced a novel avenue for patients to seek medically related information. This technology holds significant promise in terms of accessibility and convenience. However, the use of ChatGPT as a source of accurate information enhancing patient education and engagement requires careful consideration. The objective of this study was to assess the accuracy and reliability of ChatGPT in providing information on the indications and management of complications post-tympanostomy, the most common pediatric procedure in otolaryngology. Methods: We prompted ChatGPT-3.5 with questions and compared its generated responses with the recommendations provided by the latest American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery Foundation (AAO-HNSF) “Clinical Practice Guideline: Tympanostomy Tubes in Children (Update)”. Results: A total of 23 responses were generated by ChatGPT against the AAO-HNSF guidelines. Following a thorough review, it was determined that 22/23 (95.7%) responses exhibited a high level of reliability and accuracy, closely aligning with the gold standard. Conclusion: Our research study indicates that ChatGPT may be of assistance to parents in search of information regarding tympanostomy tube insertion and its clinical implications.

Vanadium is a significant metal, and its derivatives are widely employed in industry. One of the essential vanadium compounds is vanadium pentoxide (V2O5), which is mostly recovered from titanomagnetite, uranium–vanadium deposits, phosphate rocks, and spent catalysts. A smart method for the characterization and recovery of vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) was investigated and implemented as a small-scale benchtop model. Several nondestructive analytical techniques, such as particle size analysis, X-ray fluorescence (XRF), inductively coupled plasma (ICP), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to determine the physical and chemical properties, such as the particle size and composition, of the samples before and after the recovery process of vanadium pentoxide (V2O5). After sample preparation, several acid and alkali leaching techniques were investigated. A noncorrosive, environmentally friendly extraction method based on the use of less harmful acids was applied in batch and column experiments for the extraction of V2O5 as vanadium ions from a spent vanadium catalyst. In batching experiments, different acids and bases were examined as leaching solution agents; oxalic acid showed the best percent recovery for vanadium ions compared with the other acids used. The effects of the contact time, acid concentration, solid-to-liquid ratio, stirring rate, and temperature were studied to optimize the leaching conditions. Oxalic acid with a 6% (w/w) to a 1/10 solid-to-liquid ratio at 300 rpm and 50 °C was the optimal condition for extraction (67.43% recovery). On the other hand, the column experiment with a 150 cm long and 5 cm i.d. and 144 h contact time using the same leaching reagent, 6% oxalic acid, showed a 94.42% recovery. The results of the present work indicate the possibility of the recovery of vanadium pentoxide from the spent vanadium catalyst used in the sulfuric acid industry in Jordan.

Electrodermal activity (EDA) usually relates to variations in the electrical properties of palmar or plantar skin sites. EDA responses, namely skin conductance responses (SCRs), skin potential responses (SPRs) and skin susceptance responses (SSRs) are shown to be sensitive indexes of sympathetic nervous system activation and are studied in many research projects. However, the association between EDA responses and the five basic human senses has not been investigated yet. Our study aimed to explore the relationship between the three EDA responses (SCRs, SSRs and SPRs) and the five basic human senses. These three EDA responses were measured simultaneously at the same skin site on each of the 38 volunteers. The tested five senses were sight, hearing, touch, taste and smell. The results showed that the different tested senses led to different degrees of EDA responses due to activation of the sympathetic nervous system and corresponding secretion of sweat. Although a controlled study on the degree of EDA as a function of the strength of each stimulus was not performed, we noted that the largest EDA responses were typically associated with the smell sense test. We conclude that EDA responses could be utilized as measures for examining the sensitivity of the human senses. Hence, EDA devices may have important roles in sensory systems for future clinical applications.

Addressing the critical issue of water pollution, this review article emphasizes the need to remove hazardous dyes and phenolic compounds from wastewater. These pollutants pose severe risks due to their toxic, mutagenic, and carcinogenic properties. The study explores various techniques for the remediation of organic contaminants from wastewater, including an enzymatic approach. A significant challenge in enzymatic wastewater treatment is the loss of enzyme activity and difficulty in recovery post-treatment. To mitigate these issues, this review examines the strategy of immobilizing enzymes on newly developed nanostructured materials like graphene, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). These materials offer high surface areas, excellent porosity, and ample anchoring sites for effective enzyme immobilization. The review evaluates recent research on enzyme immobilization on these supports and their applications in biocatalytic nanoparticles. It also analyzes the impact of operational factors (e.g., time, pH, and temperature) on dye and phenolic compound removal from wastewater using these enzymes. Despite promising outcomes, this review acknowledges the challenges for large-scale implementation and offers recommendations for future research to tackle these obstacles. This review concludes by suggesting that enzyme immobilization on these emerging materials could present a sustainable, environmentally friendly solution to the escalating water pollution crisis.

An experimental study of a tunable 60 GHz multiwavelength Brillouin erbium fiber laser is presented in this paper. Two unidirectional ring laser cavities and two pre-amplification laser cavities are used. In the first three cavities, a Brillouin gain medium is presented with a dispersion compensation fiber (DCF) spool, and a single-mode fiber (SMF) spool is used as a Brillouin gain medium in the fourth cavity. Three erbium amplifiers are utilized to supply enough gain to the generated Brillouin Stokes signal and to suppress cavity losses. For these three amplifiers, up to 450 mW (150 mW for each) of a 1480 nm pump power is used. In our proposed configuration, four sextuple Brillouin Stokes signals with a high power of 10 dBm and more than 55 dB as an optical signal-to-noise ratio are achieved. The obtained Brillouin Stokes signals can be tuned over 30 nm (1560–1590 nm) and can be easily used in dense wavelength division multiplexing in optics communication systems.

Background: Electronic cigarettes are immensely popular among youths across the globe. However, knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions regarding their use vary by country. The present study investigated the knowledge and attitudes toward e-cigarette use among first-year university students in Saudi Arabia. Methods: A cross-sectional design was adopted, and an online, self-administered questionnaire assessing the knowledge of and attitudes toward e-cigarette use was utilized to conduct this study. The study population included students from all streams enrolled in their first year of university. Descriptive statistics were used to report percentages and frequencies, while advanced statistics, such as multiple logistic regression analyses, were used to determine associations. Results: The lifetime and current prevalence of e-cigarette use was 27.4% and 13.5%, respectively, among first-year university students. The mean age of smoking initiation was 16.4 ± 1.2 years. Of e-cigarette users, 31.3% smoked every day and 86.7% used flavored e-cigarettes. Knowledge of the harmful effects of e-cigarettes was high (addiction, 61.2%; asthma, 61%; nicotine content, 75.2%). However, when comparing e-cigarettes to regular cigarettes, only 22.5% and 48.4% of the students reported that they carry the same risk and contain the same chemicals as regular cigarettes do. There was a lack of knowledge (17.1%) regarding government regulations related to e-cigarettes. An attitude of support was observed regarding banning e-cigarettes (2.6 ± 1.5 on a scale of 0 to 4), while at the same time, some associated e-cigarette use with helping to reduce tobacco dependency (2.1 ± 1.2). Marketing adverts were agreed upon to positively influence youth (1.9 ± 1.4). However, the participants’ perceptions relating e-cigarette use to style were not well articulated. Significant gender differences were found: most of the women who participated in the study had better knowledge of e-cigarettes (p < 0.001). Being male, having higher income status (OR = 1.67; p = 0.013), being a current smoker (OR = 11.6; p < 0.001), and having intention for future use (OR = 3.45; p < 0.001) were strong predictors of e-cigarette use. Conclusions: These findings suggested the increasing popularity of e-cigarette use among male first-year university students. More educational campaigns and stricter regulations are needed to curb this trend.

Greenhouses with efficient controlled environment offer a promising solution for food security against the impacts of increasing global temperatures and growing water scarcity. However, current technologies used to achieve this controlled environment consume a significant amount of energy, which impacts on operational costs and CO2 emissions. Using advanced metal organic framework materials (MOFs) with superior water adsorption characteristics, this work investigates the development of a new technology for a greenhouse-controlled environment. The system consists of MOF coated heat exchanger, air to air heat exchanger, and evaporative cooler. A three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was developed using COMSOL software and experimentally validated for the MOF-801/Graphene coated heat exchanger (DCHE) to determine the best cycle time and power input. It was found that using desorption time of 16 min and power input of 1.26 W, the maximum water removal rate was obtained from MOF-801/Graphene of 274.4 g/kgMOF/W.hr. In addition, an overall mathematical model for the greenhouse climate control was developed and used to investigate the effects of air humidity and velocity on the input air conditions to the greenhouse. Results showed that with high relative humidity levels of 90% in the greenhouse can be conditioned to reach the required relative humidity of 50%.

Mycobacterium (M.) bovis BCG vaccination is recommended for healthy babies after birth in several countries with a high prevalence of tuberculosis, including Ghana. Previous studies showed that BCG vaccination prevents individuals from developing severe clinical manifestations of tuberculosis, but BCG vaccination effects on the induction of IFN-γ after M. tuberculosis infection have hardly been investigated. Here, we performed IFN-γ-based T-cell assays (i.e., IFN-γ Release Assay, IGRA; T-cell activation and maturation marker assay, TAM-TB) in children who had contact with index tuberculosis patients (contacts). These contacts were classified as either being BCG vaccinated at birth (n = 77) or non-BCG-vaccinated (n = 17) and were followed up at three timepoints for a period of one year to determine immune conversion after M. tuberculosis exposure and potential infection. At baseline and month 3, BCG-vaccinated contacts had significantly lower IFN-γ levels after stimulation with M. tuberculosis-specific proteins as compared to non-BCG-vaccinated contacts. This resulted in decreased proportions of positive IGRA results (BCG-vaccinated: 60% at baseline, 57% at month 3; non-BCG-vaccinated: 77% and 88%, respectively) at month 3. However, until month 12, immune conversion in BCG-vaccinated contacts led to balanced proportions in IGRA responders and IFN-γ expression between the study groups. TAM-TB assay analyses confirmed higher proportions of IFN-γ-positive T-cells in non-BCG-vaccinated contacts. Low proportions of CD38-positive M. tuberculosis-specific T-cells were only detected in non-BCG-vaccinated contacts at baseline. These results suggest that BCG vaccination causes delayed immune conversion as well as differences in the phenotype of M. tuberculosis-specific T-cells in BCG-vaccinated contacts of tuberculosis patients. These differences are immune biomarker candidates for protection against the development of severe clinical tuberculosis manifestations.

A contrast agent with specific characteristics is essential for high-quality magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). It plays a crucial role in enhancing the visibility of certain tissues and structures, making it imperative for diagnostic procedures. Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) have emerged as a promising alternative to traditional contrast agents for MRI due to their non-toxicity and superior magnetic properties. However, a suitable surface coating strategy is needed to produce polymer-coated SPIONs with controllable sizes in order to enhance their stability and biocompatibility. This study presents a novel one-pot synthesis method for the production of highly stable polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)-coated SPIONs. By systematically manipulating the physicochemical properties of SPIONs, the effect of different molecular weights of PVP was studied. The results showed that SPIONs coated with PVP with molecular wight 40,000 g/mol (40 K) exhibited a high magnetization (Ms = 48.4 emu/g), an average size distribution (11.61 nm), and excellent stability. The relaxivity of coated and uncoated SPIONs was investigated using MRI images. The results revealed that the (r2/r1) ratio of PVP40K-SPIONs was 72.55, compared to 55.72 for the bare SPIONs, making them a highly promising T2-contrast agent for future development of MRI applications. This study opens new avenues for the development of biocompatible and stable SPIONs for improved medical diagnostic and imaging.

Hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae (hvKp) is a new emerging variant of K. pneumoniae that is increasingly reported worldwide. The variant hvKp is known to cause severe invasive community-acquired infections such as metastatic meningitis, pyogenic liver abscesses (PLA) and endophthalmitis, but its role in hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) is little known. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of hvKp among hospital-acquired (HA) K. pneumoniae infections in the intensive care unit (ICU) and to compare between hvKp and classical K. pneumoniae (cKP) regarding antimicrobial resistance pattern, virulence and molecular characteristics. The study was cross-sectional and included 120 ICU patients suffering from HA K. pneumoniae infections between January and September 2022. K. pneumoniae isolates were subjected to antimicrobial susceptibility testing and detection of extended-spectrum-β-lactamase (ESBL) production by the Phoenix 100 automated microbiology system, string test, biofilm formation, serum resistance assay, and detection of virulence-associated genes (rmpA, rmpA2, magA, iucA) and capsular serotype-specific genes (K1, K2, K5, K20, K57) by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Of 120 K. pneumoniae isolates, 19 (15.8%) were hvKp. The hypermucoviscous phenotype was more significantly detected in the hvKp group than in the cKP group (100% vs. 7.9%, p ≤ 0.001). The rate of resistance to different antimicrobial agents was significantly higher in the cKP group than that in the hvKp group. Fifty-three strains were identified as ESBL-producing strains, which was more frequent in the cKP group than in the hvKp group (48/101 [47.5%] vs. 5/19 [26.3%], respectively, p ≤ 0.001). The hvKP isolates were highly associated with moderate and strong biofilm formation than cKP isolates (p = 0.018 and p = 0.043 respectively). Moreover, the hvKP isolates were highly associated with intermediate sensitivity and re sistance to serum in the serum resistance assay (p = 0.043 and p = 0.016 respectively). K1, K2, rmpA, rmpA2, magA and iucA genes were significantly associated with hvKp (p ≤ 0.001, 0.004, K5, K20 and K57 were not associated with hvKp. The hvKp strains have emerged as a new threat to ICU patients because of their ability to cause more severe and life-threatening infections than cKP. The string test alone as a laboratory test for screening of hvKp has become insufficient. Recently, hvKp was defined as hypermucoviscous- and aerobactin-positive. It is important to improve the awareness towards the diagnosis and management of hvKp infections.

A new series of nitric oxide-releasing estra-1,3,5,16-tetraene analogs (NO-∆-16-CIEAs) was designed and synthesized as dual inhibitors for EGFR and MRP2 based on our previous findings on estra-1,3,5-triene analog NO-CIEA 17 against both HepG2 and HepG2-R cell lines. Among the target compounds, 14a (R-isomer) and 14b (S-isomer) displayed potent anti-proliferative activity against both HepG2 and HepG2-R cell lines in comparison to the reference drug erlotinib. Remarkably, compound 14a resulted in a prominent reduction in EGFR phosphorylation at a concentration of 1.20 µM with slight activity on the phosphorylation of MEK1/2 and ERK1/2. It also inhibits MRP2 expression in a dose-dependent manner with 24% inhibition and arrested the cells in the S phase of the cell cycle. Interestingly, compound 14a (estratetraene core) exhibited a twofold increase in anti-proliferative activity against both HepG2 and HepG2-R in comparison with the lead estratriene analog, demonstrating the significance of the designed ∆-16 unsaturation. The results shed a light on compound 14a and support further investigations to combat multidrug resistance in chemotherapy of hepatocellular carcinoma patients.

Urbanization affects all elements of the pre-urban environment, including soils, hydrology, vegetation, and microclimate. Recently, Saudi Arabia has experienced rapid urbanization and growth. Thus, the country’s biodiversity has been threatened. In the Riyadh region, beetle assemblages were assessed along a rural-suburban-urban gradient. A total of 2791 individuals from 94 species belonging to seven families were collected at 15 sites along three different gradients of urbanization in Wadi Hanifa, which runs for a length of 120 km from northwest to southeast. Tenebrionidae dominated abundance (60.1%) and richness (38%). Beetle abundance, evenness, and diversity were not different among habitats; however, species richness was higher in rural habitats. Detrended correspondence “DCA” and canonical correspondence “CCA” analyses showed distinct differences among sites along gradients. Urbanization intensity, soil variables, and land cover were significantly correlated with CCA axis 1, while elevation and flora were significantly correlated with CCA axis 2. The most critical operating environmental variables in Wadi Hanifa were buildings, elevation, soil organic carbon, litter cover, and litter depth, as well as plant species such as Launaea capitata, Lycium shawii, Alhagi graecorum, and Heliotropium currasavicum. Ten species in our study were associated with urban habitats, six with suburban habitats, and seven with rural habitats. Consequently, expanding urban areas may negatively affect the richness and composition of beetles and may result in the loss of some native species.

Background and Objectives: Patients undergoing liver transplantation (LT) often require increased blood product transfusion due to pre-existing coagulopathy and intraoperative fibrinolysis. Strategies to minimise intraoperative bleeding and subsequent blood product requirements include platelet transfusion and tranexamic acid (TXA). Prophylactic TXA administration has been shown to reduce bleeding and blood product requirements intraoperatively. However, its clinical use is still debated. The aim of this study was to report on a single-centre practice and analyse clinical characteristics and outcomes of LT recipients according to intraoperative treatment of TXA or platelet transfusion. Materials and Methods: This was a retrospective observational cohort study in which we reviewed 162 patients’ records. Characteristics, intraoperative requirement of blood products, postoperative development of thrombosis and outcomes were compared between patients without or with intraoperative TXA treatment and without or with platelet transfusion. Results: Intraoperative treatment of TXA and platelets was 53% and 57.40%, respectively. Patients who required intraoperative administration of TXA or platelet transfusion also required more transfusion of blood products. Neither TXA nor platelet transfusion were associated with increased postoperative development of hepatic artery and portal vein thrombosis, 90-day mortality or graft loss. There was a significant increase in the median length of intensive care unit (ICU) stay in those who received platelet transfusion only (2.00 vs. 3.00 days; p = 0.021). Time to extubate was significantly different in both those who required TXA and platelet transfusion intraoperatively. Conclusions: Our analysis indicates that LT recipients still required copious intraoperative transfusion of blood products, despite the use of intraoperative TXA and platelets. Our findings have important implications for current transfusion practice in LT recipients and may guide clinicians to act upon these findings, which will support global efforts to encourage a wider use of TXA to reduce transfusion requirements, including platelets.

Background: Workplace social support might have a protective function against migraine in the social context of China, as close co-worker relationships and collectivism are acknowledged as work values in Chinese society. Objectives: This paper aimed to analyse the association between migraine and workplace social support. The validity and reliability of the Chinese version of the Support scale of the Demand-Control-Support Questionnaire (DCSQ) used were also determined. Methods: Following international guidelines, this study was carried out in two stages. Stage I involved translations and pilot testing to assess content and face validity of the Chinese version of the DCSQ Support scale. Stage II was a cross-sectional survey (N = 677 bank employees) to evaluate structural validity, internal consistency and test-retest reliability of the Support scale, as well as to examine the association between workplace social support and a migraine-positive diagnosis. Results: A high level of social support in the workplace was associated with a 74% decreased likelihood of migraine (adjusted OR = 0.26, 95%CI: 0.14–0.46). Of the six aspects of workplace social support, co-worker support had the greatest protective effect (adjusted OR = 0.49, 95% CI: 0.39–0.60). The Chinese version of the DCSQ Support scale established satisfactory content and face validity (I-CVIs ≥ 0.78; S-CVIAVE ≥ 0.90). Confirmatory factor analysis verified its one-dimensional theoretical factor, with adequate internal consistency (Cronbach’s α 0.98; item-total correlations ≥ 0.80) and test-retest reliability (weighted Kappa coefficients 0.81–0.87; percentages agreement 85.23–88.92%). Conclusions: In the Chinese social context, workplace social support could protect against migraine, with the strongest benefit coming from co-workers. This study also provides a Chinese-language DCSQ Support scale as a valid and reliable instrument for measuring workplace social support.

Purpose: Obesity is thought to arise, in part, from deficits in the inhibitory control over appetitive behavior. Such motivational processes are regulated by neuromodulators, specifically acetylcholine (ACh), via α4β2* nicotinic ACh receptors (nAChR). These nAChR are highly enriched in the thalamus and contribute to the thalamic gating of cortico-striatal signaling, but also act on the mesoaccumbal reward system. The changes in α4β2* nAChR availability, however, have not been demonstrated in human obesity thus far. The aim of our study was, thus, to investigate whether there is altered brain α4β2* nAChR availability in individuals with obesity compared to normal-weight healthy controls. Methods: We studied 15 non-smoking individuals with obesity (body mass index, BMI: 37.8 ± 3.1 kg/m2; age: 39 ± 14 years, 9 females) and 16 normal-weight controls (non-smokers, BMI: 21.9 ± 1.7 kg/m2; age: 28 ± 7 years, 13 females) by using PET and the α4β2* nAChR selective (−)-[18F]flubatine, which was applied within a bolus-infusion protocol (294 ± 16 MBq). Volume-of-interest (VOI) analysis was performed in order to calculate the regional total distribution volume (VT). Results: No overall significant difference in VT between the individuals with obesity and the normal-weight volunteers was found, while the VT in the nucleus basalis of Meynert tended to be lower in the individuals with obesity (10.1 ± 2.1 versus 11.9 ± 2.2; p = 0.10), and the VT in the thalamus showed a tendency towards higher values in the individuals with obesity (26.5 ± 2.5 versus 25.9 ± 4.2; p = 0.09). Conclusion: While these first data do not show greater brain α4β2* nAChR availability in human obesity overall, the findings of potentially aberrant α4β2* nAChR availability in the key brain regions that regulate feeding behavior merit further exploration.

The main obstacle of using geopolymer as a construction repair material is its slow strength development rate, which is the most significant attribute of an early-age opening for traffic and striking-off formwork. Geopolymer technology has recently attracted huge interest as an alternative to traditional cementitious materials with low environmental impact. Thus, this study investigates the feasibility of developing an ultra-high performance geopolymer concrete (UHPGC) with the aim of achieving high early-age strength. For this purpose, UHPGC mixtures activated with different potassium hydroxide molarities and aluminosilicate material types were developed and examined being cured with different curing temperatures. The early strength and durability of the UHPGC after 8 and 24 h were investigated. Experimental results revealed that the optimal mix design of UHPGC corresponds to a KOH molarity of 16 M and a 30% silica fume content. Furthermore, former mixture cured at 100 °C gave superior 8 and 24 h early strength values of 79 and 134 MPa, respectively. Moreover, a superior interaction of slag, silica fume, and activator solution at early age for UHPGC is revealed by the microstructural characteristics examined by a field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis, and thermogravimetric (TGA) techniques. It was also found that the compressive strength results and the results of the microstructure analysis are well coincided. The experimental results obtained in this study emphasize the feasibility of using developed UHPGC as an eco-friendly quick repair materials The development of one-part UHPGC as a quick, cost-effective, and high-strength product for all construction repair maintenance will lead to huge improvements in the structural capacity and durability of structural components.

A new series of indoline-2-one derivatives was designed and synthesized based on the essential pharmacophoric features of VEGFR-2 inhibitors. Anti-proliferative activities were assessed for all derivatives against breast (MCF-7) and liver (HepG2) cancer cell lines, using sunitinib as a reference agent. The most potent anti-proliferative derivatives were evaluated for their VEGFR-2 inhibition activity. The effects of the most potent inhibitor, 17a, on cell cycle, apoptosis, and expression of apoptotic markers (caspase-3&-9, BAX, and Bcl-2) were studied. Molecular modeling studies, such as docking simulations, physicochemical properties prediction, and pharmacokinetic profiling were performed. The results revealed that derivatives 5b, 10e, 10g, 15a, and 17a exhibited potent anticancer activities with IC50 values from 0.74–4.62 µM against MCF-7 cell line (sunitinib IC50 = 4.77 µM) and from 1.13–8.81 µM against HepG2 cell line (sunitinib IC50 = 2.23 µM). Furthermore, these compounds displayed potent VEGFR-2 inhibitory activities with IC50 values of 0.160, 0.358, 0.087, 0.180, and 0.078 µM, respectively (sunitinib IC50 = 0.139 µM). Cell cycle analysis demonstrated the ability of 17a to induce a cell cycle arrest of the HepG2 cells at the S phase and increase the total apoptosis by 3.5-fold. Moreover, 17a upregulated the expression levels of apoptotic markers caspase-3 and -9 by 6.9-fold and 3.7-fold, respectively. In addition, 17a increased the expression level of BAX by 2.7-fold while decreasing the expression level of Bcl-2 by 1.9-fold. The molecular docking simulations displayed enhanced binding interactions and similar placement as sunitinib inside the active pocket of VEGFR-2. The molecular modeling calculations showed that all the test compounds were in accordance with Lipinski and Veber rules for oral bioavailability and had promising drug-likeness behavior.

Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) as well as noradrenaline (NA) are key modulators of various fundamental brain functions including the control of appetite. While manipulations that alter brain serotoninergic signaling clearly affect body weight, studies implicating 5-HT transporters and NA transporters (5-HTT and NAT, respectively) as a main drug treatment target for human obesity have not been conclusive. The aim of this positron emission tomography (PET) study was to investigate how these central transporters are associated with changes of body weight after 6 months of dietary intervention or Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) surgery in order to assess whether 5-HTT as well as NAT availability can predict weight loss and consequently treatment success. The study population consisted of two study cohorts using either the 5-HTT-selective radiotracer [11C]DASB to measure 5-HTT availability or the NAT-selective radiotracer [11C]MRB to assess NAT availability. Each group included non-obesity healthy participants, patients with severe obesity (body mass index, BMI, >35 kg/m2) following a conservative dietary program (diet) and patients undergoing RYGB surgery within a 6-month follow-up. Overall, changes in BMI were not associated with changes of both 5-HTT and NAT availability, while 5-HTT availability in the dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN) prior to intervention was associated with substantial BMI reduction after RYGB surgery and inversely related with modest BMI reduction after diet. Taken together, the data of our study indicate that 5-HTT and NAT are involved in the pathomechanism of obesity and have the potential to serve as predictors of treatment outcomes.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of dietary fatty acid (FA) saturation and carbon chain length on brain bile acid (BA) metabolism and neuronal number in a pig model of pediatric NAFLD. Thirty 20-day-old Iberian pigs, pair-housed in pens, were randomly assigned to receive one of three hypercaloric diets for 10 weeks: (1) lard-enriched (LAR; n = 5 pens), (2) olive-oil-enriched (OLI, n = 5), and (3) coconut-oil-enriched (COC; n = 5). Pig behavior and activity were analyzed throughout the study. All animals were euthanized on week 10 and frontal cortex (FC) samples were collected for immunohistochemistry, metabolomic, and transcriptomic analyses. Data were analyzed by multivariate and univariate statistics. No differences were observed in relative brain weight, neuronal number, or cognitive functioning between diets. Pig activity and FC levels of neuroprotective secondary BAs and betaine decreased in the COC and OLI groups compared with LAR, and paralleled the severity of NAFLD. In addition, OLI-fed pigs showed downregulation of genes involved in neurotransmission, synaptic transmission, and nervous tissue development. Similarly, COC-fed pigs showed upregulation of neurogenesis and myelin repair genes, which caused the accumulation of medium-chain acylcarnitines in brain tissue. In conclusion, our results indicate that secondary BA levels in the FCs of NAFLD pigs are affected by dietary FA composition and are associated with metabolic and transcriptomic markers of brain injury. Dietary interventions that aim to replace saturated FAs by medium-chain or monounsaturated FAs in high-fat hypercaloric diets may have a negative effect on brain health in NAFLD patients.

In the present paper, we consider a nonlinear fractional snap model with respect to a G-Caputo derivative and subject to non-periodic boundary conditions. Some qualitative analysis of the solution, such as existence and uniqueness, are investigated in view of fixed-point theorems. Moreover, the stabilities of Ulam–Hyers and Ulam–Hyers–Rassias criterions are considered and investigated. Some numerical simulations were performed using MATLAB for understanding the theoretical results. All results in this work play an important role in understanding ocean engineering phenomena due to the huge applicability of jerk and snap in seakeeping, ride comfort, and shock response spectrum.

Cloud computing offers many benefits including business flexibility, scalability and cost savings but despite these benefits, there exist threats that require adequate attention for secure service delivery. Threats in a cloud-based system need to be considered from a holistic perspective that accounts for data, application, infrastructure and service, which can pose potential risks. Data certainly plays a critical role within the whole ecosystem and organisations should take account of and protect data from any potential threats. Due to the variation of data types, status, and location, understanding the potential security concerns in cloud-based infrastructures is more complex than in a traditional system. The existing threat modeling approaches lack the ability to analyse and prioritise data-related threats. The main contribution of the paper is a novel data-driven threat analysis (d-TM) approach for the cloud-based systems. The main motivation of d-TM is the integration of data from three levels of abstractions, i.e., management, control, and business and three phases, i.e., storage, process and transmittance, within each level. The d-TM provides a systematic flow of attack surface analysis from the user agent to the cloud service provider based on the threat layers in cloud computing. Finally, a cloud-based use case scenario was used to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed approach. The result shows that d-TM revealed four critical threats out of the seven threats based on the identified assets. The threats targeted management and business data in general, while targeting data in process and transit more specifically.

This article aims to develop a mathematical simulation of the steady mixed convective Darcy–Forchheimer flow of Williamson nanofluid over a linear stretchable surface. In addition, the effects of Cattaneo–Christov heat and mass flux, Brownian motion, activation energy, and thermophoresis are also studied. The novel aspect of this study is that it incorporates thermal radiation to investigate the physical effects of thermal and solutal stratification on mixed convection flow and heat transfer. First, the profiles of velocity and energy equations were transformed toward the ordinary differential equation using the appropriate similarity transformation. Then, the system of equations was modified by first-order ODEs in MATLAB and solved using the bvp4c approach. Graphs and tables imply the impact of physical parameters on concentration, temperature, velocity, skin friction coefficient, mass, and heat transfer rate. The outcomes show that the nanofluid temperature and concentration are reduced with the more significant thermal and mass stratification parameters estimation.

The cultivation of cotton and in particular the quality characteristics of the fiber are mainly influenced by the growing conditions, the cultivation techniques as well as the climatic changes of the environment. The current study aimed to quantify the impact of environment, season, and their interactions on cotton fiber quality of different areas where cotton is grown in Greece. A large-scale database was created, consisting of more than 20,000 fiber samples from cotton fields of the four major cotton-producing regions of Greece (Thrace, Macedonia, Central Greece, and Thessaly) during 2016–2020, in order to evaluate thirteen fiber quality traits that were divided into four groups (fiber maturity, fiber length, color, and trash traits). The results of this work demonstrated that the effect of the environment and the interaction of the environment with year (season), were the important source of variance for almost all the qualitative characteristics studied. Regional climatic characteristics such as temperature, humidity and rainfall also significantly affected to a greater or lesser extent all quality characteristics. In conclusion, the different cultivation regions, in the broader sense of an environment that incorporates both climatic and management parameters, show stability in terms of the studied groups of quality parameters. This stability is independent of the high or low performance of the group features.

The dam is a crucial water source for both consumption and irrigation in the Asir region of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The current study evaluates surface water quality at the dam and examines the effects of some physicochemical and trace metals on irrigation using multiple statistical approaches. The physicochemical parameters and trace metals of the dam water were measured at 27 sites in the Asir region. Three sites were generated using the K-mean clustering technique; the first group included five sites, the second group contained 20 sites, and the third group added 2 sites. The chemical facies of the surface water were Na-K-SO42−. The surface water had low levels of Zn (0.19 mg/L), Cd (0.10 mg/L) and Pb (0.22 mg/L) except for B (38.50 mg/L), excessive concentrations of Na (2090.65 mg/L), K (535.72 mg/L), SO42− (208.11 mg/L) and Cl− (105.96 mg/L), while pH varied between 6.0 and 8.5 except at a few sites. The EC (electrical conductivity) values were within the standard for irrigation purposes. The results of irrigation water indices such as magnesium absorption ratio (MAR), magnesium hazard (MH), Kelly’s ratio (KR), and soluble sodium percentage (SSP) indicate that dam water is mostly fit for irrigation except for sodium percentage (Na%) and sodium adsorption ratio (SAR). The irrigation water quality index (IWQI) values revealed that 51.85% of samples had a high suitability class and 11.11% of samples had moderate suitability, whereas the rest were low suitability for irrigation use. The redundancy analysis (RDA) biplot revealed that water pH, DO, TH, and SO42− were increased with decreased EC and salt level. The generalized linear model (GLM) model found that salt had a negative effect on the amount of Fe, Ni, Se, and Al concentrations. The study recommends that proper protective measures, including acceptable criteria for different water parameters, are required to reduce the potential influence of physicochemical parameters and metals on irrigation water in agricultural fields.

A strain of Bacillus cereus was isolated from the Saudi Red Sea coast and identified based on culture features, biochemical characteristics, and phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA sequences. EPSR3 was a major fraction of exopolysaccharides (EPS) containing no sulfate and had uronic acid (28.7%). The monosaccharide composition of these fractions is composed of glucose, galacturonic acid, and arabinose with a molar ratio of 2.0: 0.8: 1.0, respectively. EPSR3 was subjected to antioxidant, antitumor, and anti-inflammatory activities. The results revealed that the whole antioxidant activity was 90.4 ± 1.6% at 1500 µg/mL after 120 min. So, the IC50 value against DPPH radical found about 500 µg/mL after 60 min. While using H2O2, the scavenging activity was 75.1 ± 1.9% at 1500 µg/mL after 60 min. The IC50 value against H2O2 radical found about 1500 µg/mL after 15 min. EPSR3 anticytotoxic effect on the proliferation of (Bladder carcinoma cell line) (T-24), (human breast carcinoma cell line) (MCF-7), and (human prostate carcinoma cell line) (PC-3) cells. The calculated IC50 for cell line T-24 was 121 ± 4.1 µg/mL, while the IC50 for cell line MCF-7 was 55.7 ± 2.3 µg/mL, and PC-3 was 61.4 ± 2.6 µg/mL. Anti-inflammatory activity was determined for EPSR3 using different methods as Lipoxygenase (LOX) inhibitory assay gave IC50 12.9 ± 1.3 µg/mL. While cyclooxygenase (COX-2) inhibitory test showed 29.6 ± 0.89 µg /mL. EPSR3 showed potent inhibitory activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and coagulase-negative staphylococci. The exposure times of EPSR3 for the complete inhibition of cell viability of methicillin resistant S. aureus was found to be 5% at 60 min. Membrane stabilization inhibitory gave 35.4 ± 0.67 µg/mL. EPSR3 has antitumor activity with a reasonable margin of safety. The antitumor activity of EPSR3 may be attributed to its content from uronic acids with potential for cellular antioxidant and anticancer functional properties.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a leading health concern affecting the elderly population worldwide. It is defined by amyloid plaques, neurofibrillary tangles, and neuronal loss. Neuroimaging modalities such as positron emission tomography (PET) and magnetic resonance imaging are routinely used in clinical settings to monitor the alterations in the brain during the course of progression of AD. Deep learning techniques such as convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have found numerous applications in healthcare and other technologies. Together with neuroimaging modalities, they can be deployed in clinical settings to learn effective representations of data for different tasks such as classification, segmentation, detection, etc. Image filtering methods are instrumental in making images viable for image processing operations and have found numerous applications in image-processing-related tasks. In this work, we deployed 3D-CNNs to learn effective representations of PET modality data to quantify the impact of different image filtering approaches. We used box filtering, median filtering, Gaussian filtering, and modified Gaussian filtering approaches to preprocess the images and use them for classification using 3D-CNN architecture. Our findings suggest that these approaches are nearly equivalent and have no distinct advantage over one another. For the multiclass classification task between normal control (NC), mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and AD classes, the 3D-CNN architecture trained using Gaussian-filtered data performed the best. For binary classification between NC and MCI classes, the 3D-CNN architecture trained using median-filtered data performed the best, while, for binary classification between AD and MCI classes, the 3D-CNN architecture trained using modified Gaussian-filtered data performed the best. Finally, for binary classification between AD and NC classes, the 3D-CNN architecture trained using box-filtered data performed the best.

The use of cement as a soil stabilization agent is one of the common solutions to enhancing the engineering properties of soil. However, the impact and cost of using cement have raised environmental concerns, generating much interest in the search for alternative materials to reduce the use of cement as a stabilizing agent in soil treatment. This study looked into limiting cement content in peat soil stabilization by using fly ash waste and polypropylene fiber (PPF). It focused on soil mechanical mediation for stabilization of peat with fly ash cement and PPF cement by comparing the mechanical properties, using unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and California bearing ratio (CBR) tests. The control (untreated) peat specimen and specimens with either fly ash (10%, 20% and 30%) and PPF (0.1%, 0.15% and 0.2%) were studied. Test results showed that 30% of fly ash and cement content displays the highest UCS and CBR values and gives the most reliable compressibility properties. On the other hand, UCS and CBR test results indicate optimum values of PPF–cement stabilizing agent content in the specimen of 0.15% PPF and 30% cement. Selected specimens were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and PPF threads were found to be well surrounded by cement-stabilized peat matrices. It was also observed that the specimen with 30% fly ash generated more hydration products when compared to the specimen with 100% cement content. It is concluded that the use of fly ash cement and PPF cement as stabilizing agents to limit the cement usage in peat soil treatment is potentially viable.

Plant-based materials have found their application in the packaging with a yearly growing production rate. These naturally biodegradable polymers are obtained from renewable and sustainable natural resources with reduced environmental impact and affordable cost. These materials have found their utilization in fully-renewable plant-based packaging products, such as Tetra Pak®-like containers, by replacing commonly-used polyethylene as the polymer component. Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is one of the representative plant-based polymers because of its eco-friendliness and excellent chemical and mechanical properties. In this work, a PLA surface was modified by various food additives, namely ascorbic acid (ASA) and fumaric acid (FA), using plasma-initiated grafting reactions in order to improve the surface and adhesion properties of PLA. Various analytical and microscopic techniques were employed to prove the grafting process. Moreover, the improved adhesion of the modified PLA foil to aluminum (Al) foil in a laminate configuration was proven by peel resistance measurements. The peel resistance of modified PLA increased by 74% and 184% for samples modified by ASA and FA, respectively, compared with untreated PLA.

We present an algorithm for solving unconstrained optimization problems based on the q-gradient vector. The main idea used in the algorithm construction is the approximation of the classical gradient by a q-gradient vector. For a convex objective function, the quasi-Fejér convergence of the algorithm is proved. The proposed method does not require the boundedness assumption on any level set. Further, numerical experiments are reported to show the performance of the proposed method.

The blood–nerve barrier and myelin barrier normally shield peripheral nerves from potentially harmful insults. They are broken down during nerve injury, which contributes to neuronal damage. Netrin-1 is a neuronal guidance protein with various established functions in the peripheral and central nervous systems; however, its role in regulating barrier integrity and pain processing after nerve injury is poorly understood. Here, we show that chronic constriction injury (CCI) in Wistar rats reduced netrin-1 protein and the netrin-1 receptor neogenin-1 (Neo1) in the sciatic nerve. Replacement of netrin-1 via systemic or local administration of the recombinant protein rescued injury-induced nociceptive hypersensitivity. This was prevented by siRNA-mediated knockdown of Neo1 in the sciatic nerve. Mechanistically, netrin-1 restored endothelial and myelin, but not perineural, barrier function as measured by fluorescent dye or fibrinogen penetration. Netrin-1 also reversed the decline in the tight junction proteins claudin-5 and claudin-19 in the sciatic nerve caused by CCI. Our findings emphasize the role of the endothelial and myelin barriers in pain processing after nerve damage and reveal that exogenous netrin-1 restores their function to mitigate CCI-induced hypersensitivity via Neo1. The netrin-1-neogenin-1 signaling pathway may thus represent a multi-target barrier protector for the treatment of neuropathic pain.
