As precious cultural heritage, earthen sites are susceptible to various natural factors, leading to diverse forms of degradation. To protect earthen sites, the effects of super absorbent polymers (SAPs) on soil water retention, physical properties, and color compatibility at different concentrations were studied. After applying SAP treatment to an earthen site with different degrees of weathering, we drew the following conclusions. SAP-2 improved soil water retention capacity, increased soil water content, and slowed down the precipitation of soluble salts. At the same time, SAP-2 had the least effect on soil color difference and reduced the development of cracks by filling soil pores and enhancing the cohesion between soil particles, thus giving the earthen sites better weathering resistance. Therefore, the results provide a useful reference for the surface cracking of earthen sites in semi-arid areas and the degradation caused by flaking and block spalling.

The lid-driven cavity flow problem stands as a widely recognized benchmark in fluid dynamics, serving to validate CFD algorithms. Despite its geometric simplicity, the lid-driven cavity flow problem exhibits a complex flow regime primarily characterized by the formation of vortices at the centre and corners of the square domain. This study evaluates the accuracy of the 2D velocity-driven adaptive mesh refinement (2D VDAMR) method in estimating vortex centres in a steady incompressible flow within a 2D square cavity. The VDAMR algorithm allows for an arbitrary number of finite mesh refinements. Increasing the number of successive mesh refinements results in more accurate outcomes. In this paper, the initial coarse uniform grid mesh was refined ten times for Reynolds numbers 100≤Re≤7500. Results show that VDAMR accurately identifies vortex centres, with its findings closely aligning with benchmark data from six literature sources.

Superior fiber quality is one of the most important objectives in cotton breeding. To detect the genetic basis underlying fiber quality, an F2 population containing 413 plants was constructed by crossing Jifeng 914 and Jifeng 173, both of which have superior fiber quality, with Jifeng 173 being better. Five fiber quality traits were investigated in the F2, F2:3, F2:4, and F2:5 populations. Quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping was conducted based on a high-density genetic map containing 11,488 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and spanning 4202.12 cM in length. Transgressive segregation patterns and complex correlations in the five tested traits were observed. A total of 108 QTLs were found, including 13 major effect QTLs that contributed more than 10% toward phenotypic variation (PV) and 9 stable QTLs that could be repeatedly mapped in different generations. Chromosome A7 contained 12 QTL, ranking the first. No QTL was found on chromosomes D1 and D11. Two QTLs could be repeatedly detected in three populations, including qFL-D3-2 in F2, F2:4, and F2:5 with 9.18–21.45% of PV and qFS-A11-1 in F2:3, F2:4, and F2:5 with 6.05–10.41% of PV. Another seven stable QTLs could be detected in two populations, including four major effect QTLs: qFL-A12-3, qFS-D10-2, qMC-D6-2, and qMC-D8-1. Fourteen QTL-overlapping regions were found, which might explain the complex correlations among the five phenotypic traits. Four regions on chromosome A11, D3, D6, and D10 covered by both stable and major effect QTLs are promising for further fine mapping. The genomic regions of the two QTLs detected in three populations and the four major effect QTLs contain 810 genes. Gene functional analysis revealed that the annotated genes are mainly involved in protein binding and metabolic pathways. Fifteen candidate genes in the qFL-D3-2 region are highly expressed in fiber or ovules during fiber initiation, elongation, secondary cell wall thickening, or maturation stages. qRT-PCR revealed that Ghir_D03G005440.1 and Ghir_D03G011310.1 may play a role in promoting fiber initiation, while Ghir_D03G006470.1 may be beneficial for promoting fiber elongation. This study provides more information for revealing the molecular genetic basis underlying cotton fiber quality.

Compared to hyperspectral trackers that adopt the “pre-training then fine-tuning” training paradigm, those using the “pre-training then prompt-tuning” training paradigm can inherit the expressive capabilities of the pre-trained model with fewer training parameters. Existing hyperspectral trackers utilizing prompt learning lack an adequate prompt template design, thus failing to bridge the domain gap between hyperspectral data and pre-trained models. Consequently, their tracking performance suffers. Additionally, these networks have a poor generalization ability and require re-training for the different spectral bands of hyperspectral data, leading to the inefficient use of computational resources. In order to address the aforementioned problems, we propose a spectral similarity prompt learning approach for hyperspectral object tracking (SPTrack). First, we introduce a spectral matching map based on spectral similarity, which converts 3D hyperspectral data with different spectral bands into single-channel hotmaps, thus enabling cross-spectral domain generalization. Then, we design a channel and position attention-based feature complementary prompter to learn blended prompts from spectral matching maps and three-channel images. Extensive experiments are conducted on the HOT2023 and IMEC25 data sets, and SPTrack is found to achieve state-of-the-art performance with minimal computational effort. Additionally, we verify the cross-spectral domain generalization ability of SPTrack on the HOT2023 data set, which includes data from three spectral bands.

Thermochromic smart windows realize an intelligent response to changes in environmental temperature through reversible physical phase transitions. They complete a real-time adjustment of solar transmittance, create a livable indoor temperature for humans, and reduce the energy consumption of buildings. Nevertheless, conventional materials that are used to prepare thermochromic smart windows face challenges, including fixed transition temperatures, limited solar modulation capabilities, and inadequate mechanical properties. In this study, a novel thermochromic hydrogel was synthesized from 2-hydroxy-3-butoxypropyl hydroxyethyl celluloses (HBPEC) and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) by using a simple one-step low-temperature polymerization method. The HBPEC/PNIPAM hydrogel demonstrates a wide response temperature (24.1–33.2 °C), high light transmittance (Tlum = 87.5%), excellent solar modulation (ΔTsol = 71.2%), and robust mechanical properties. HBPEC is a functional material that can be used to adjust the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of the smart window over a wide range by changing the degree of substitution (DS) of the butoxy group in its structure. In addition, the use of HBPEC effectively improves the light transmittance and mechanical properties of the hydrogels. After 100 heating and cooling cycles, the hydrogel still has excellent stability. Furthermore, indoor simulation experiments show that HBPEC/PNIPAM hydrogel smart windows have better indoor temperature regulation capabilities than traditional windows, making these smart windows potential candidates for energy-saving building materials.

Infrared small target detection is an important and core problem in infrared search and track systems. Many infrared small target detection methods work well under the premise of a static background; however, the detection effect decreases seriously when the background changes dynamically. In addition, the spatiotemporal information of the target and background of the image sequence are not fully developed and utilized, lacking long-term temporal characteristics. To solve these problems, a novel long-term spatial–temporal tensor (LSTT) model is proposed in this paper. The image registration technique is employed to realize the matching between frames. By directly superimposing the aligned images, the spatiotemporal features of the resulting tensor are not damaged or reduced. From the perspective of the horizontal slice of this tensor, it is found that the background component has similarity in the time dimension and correlation in the space dimension, which is more consistent with the prerequisite of low rank, while the target component is sparse. Therefore, we transform the problem of infrared detection of a small moving target into a low-rank sparse decomposition problem of new tensors composed of several continuous horizontal slices of the aligned image tensor. The low rank of the background is constrained by the partial tubal nuclear norm (PTNN), and the tensor decomposition problem is quickly solved using the alternating-direction method of multipliers (ADMM). Our experimental results demonstrate that the proposed LSTT method can effectively detect small moving targets against a dynamic background. Compared with other benchmark methods, the new method has better performance in terms of detection efficiency and accuracy. In particular, the new LSTT method can extract the spatiotemporal information of more frames in a longer time domain and obtain a higher detection rate.

Despite huge efforts, tuberculosis (TB) is still a major public health threat worldwide, with approximately 23% of the human population harboring a latent TB infection (LTBI). LTBI can reactivate and progress to active and transmissible TB disease, contributing to its spread within the population. The challenges in diagnosing and treating LTBI patients have been major factors contributing to this phenomenon. Exosomes offer a novel avenue for investigating the process of TB infection. In this study, we conducted small RNA sequencing to investigate the small RNA profiles of plasma exosomes derived from individuals with LTBI and healthy controls. Our findings revealed distinct miRNA profiles in the exosomes between the two groups. We identified 12 differentially expressed miRNAs through this analysis, which were further validated via qRT-PCR using the same exosomes. Notably, six miRNAs (hsa-miR-7850-5p, hsa-miR-1306-5p, hsa-miR-363-5p, hsa-miR-374a-5p, hsa-miR-4654, has-miR-6529-5p, and hsa-miR-140-5p) exhibited specifically elevated expression in individuals with LTBI. Gene ontology and KEGG pathway analyses revealed that the targets of these miRNAs were enriched in functions associated with ferroptosis and fatty acid metabolism, underscoring the critical role of these miRNAs in regulating the intracellular survival of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb). Furthermore, our results indicated that the overexpression of miR-7850-5p downregulated the expression of the SLC11A1 protein in both Mtb-infected and Mtb-uninfected THP1 cells. Additionally, we observed that miR-7850-5p promoted the intracellular survival of Mtb by suppressing the expression of the SLC11A1 protein. Overall, our findings provide valuable insights into the role of miRNAs and repetitive region-derived small RNAs in exosomes during the infectious process of Mtb and contribute to the identification of potential molecular targets for the detection and diagnosis of latent tuberculosis.

Gastrodin (GAS) is the main chemical component of the traditional Chinese herb Gastrodia elata (called “Tianma” in Chinese), which has been used to treat neurological conditions, including headaches, epilepsy, stroke, and memory loss. To our knowledge, it is unclear whether GAS has a therapeutic effect on Huntington’s disease (HD). In the present study, we evaluated the effect of GAS on the degradation of mutant huntingtin protein (mHtt) by using PC12 cells transfected with N-terminal mHtt Q74. We found that 0.1–100 μM GAS had no effect on the survival rate of Q23 and Q74 PC12 cells after 24–48 h of incubation. The ubiquitin–proteasome system (UPS) is the main system that clears misfolded proteins in eukaryotic cells. Mutated Htt significantly upregulated total ubiquitinated protein (Ub) expression, decreased chymotrypsin-like, trypsin-like and caspase-like peptidase activity, and reduced the colocalization of the 20S proteasome with mHtt. GAS (25 μM) attenuated all of the abovementioned pathological changes, and the regulatory effect of GAS on mHtt was found to be abolished by MG132, a proteasome inhibitor. The autophagy–lysosome pathway (ALP) is another system for misfolded protein degradation. Although GAS downregulated the expression of autophagy markers (LC3II and P62), it increased the colocalization of LC3II with lysosomal associated membrane protein 1 (LAMP1), which indicates that ALP was activated. Moreover, GAS prevented mHtt-induced neuronal damage in PC12 cells. GAS has a selective effect on mHtt in Q74 PC12 cells and has no effect on Q23 and proteins encoded by other genes containing long CAGs, such as Rbm33 (10 CAG repeats) and Hcn1 (>30 CAG repeats). Furthermore, oral administration of 100 mg/kg GAS increased grip strength and attenuated mHtt aggregates in B6-hHTT130-N transgenic mice. This is a high dose (100 mg/kg GAS) when compared with experiments on HD mice with other small molecules. We will design more doses to evaluate the dose–response relationship of the inhibition effect of GAS on mHtt in our next study. In summary, GAS can promote the degradation of mHtt by activating the UPS and ALP, making it a potential therapeutic agent for HD.

This paper focuses on the selection and application of scale inhibitor by studying the problem of pipeline scaling in geothermal well development. Adding scale inhibitor can effectively reduce the treatment cost and achieve a good scale resistance effect, but the commonly used polyaspartic acid scale inhibitor has problems such as poor scale inhibition effect and large use limitations. Therefore, a new modified polyaspartic acid scale inhibitor (His-Tyr-SA-PASP) was prepared using polysuccinimide (PSI) as the raw material and histidine (His), tyrosine (Tyr), and sulfonic acid (SA) as the modification reagent. When the dosage of His-Tyr-SA-PASP was 8 mg/L, the scale inhibition rate of CaCO3 was 94.40%. In addition, the scale inhibition effect of His-Tyr-SA-PASP on CaCO3 was better than that of PASP. At the same time, under the condition of a static experiment at 75 °C, according to the ion concentration of water samples in different scale zones, this paper also identified the ratio of four composite scale inhibitors. When the dosage of compound scale inhibitor was 100 mg/L, Sodium of Polyaspartic Acid–Diethylene Triamine Penta (Methylene Phosphonic Acid)–2-Phosphonobutane-1,2,4-Tricarboxylic Acid–Amino Trimethylene Phosphonic Acid–Copolymer of Maleic and Acrylic Acid = (10:10:5:1:9), (15:10:5:2.5:2.5), (12.5:5:10:1:6.5), and (15:5:10:4:1) and the scale inhibition rate was more than 95%. Under the condition of a dynamic experiment, the optimized composite scale inhibitor still showed a scale inhibition rate of more than 90%. It provides a useful reference for the practical application of water treatment in geothermal wells and has the prospect of industrial application.

A highly sensitive, selective and recyclable histidine detection method based on magnetic Fe3O4@mTiO2 (M-TiO2) nanocomposites with SERRS was developed. Mesoporous M-TiO2 nanoparticles were functionalized with 4-aminothiophenol and then coupled with histidine through an azo coupling reaction in 5 min, producing the corresponding azo compound. The strong and specific SERRS response of the azo product allowed for ultrasensitive and selective detection for histidine with an M-TiO2 device loaded with Ag NPs due to the molecular resonance effect and plasmonic effect of Ag NPs under a 532 nm excitation laser. The sensitivity was further enhanced with the magnetic enrichment of M-TiO2. The limit of detection (LOD) was as low as 8.00 × 10−12 mol/L. The M-TiO2 demonstrated applicability towards histidine determination in human urine without any sample pretreatment. Additionally, the M-TiO2 device can be recycled for 3 cycles with the photodegradation of the azo product under UV irradiation due to TiO2-assisted and plasmon-enhanced photocatalysis. In summary, a multifunctional and recyclable M-TiO2 device was synthesized based on azo coupling and SERRS spectroscopy for ultra-sensitive and specific histidine sensing. In addition, the proposed system demonstrated the potential for the multiplex determination of toxic compounds in the fields of food safety, industrial production and environmental protection, which benefit from the fingerprint property and universality of SERRS.

Chalkophomycin is a novel chalkophore with antibiotic activities isolated from Streptomyces sp. CB00271, while its potential in studying cellular copper homeostasis makes it an important probe and drug lead. The constellation of N-hydroxylpyrrole, 2H-oxazoline, diazeniumdiolate, and methoxypyrrolinone functional groups into one compact molecular architecture capable of coordinating cupric ions draws interest to unprecedented enzymology responsible for chalkophomycin biosynthesis. To elucidate the biosynthetic machinery for chalkophomycin production, the chm biosynthetic gene cluster from S. sp. CB00271 was identified, and its involvement in chalkophomycin biosynthesis was confirmed by gene replacement. The chm cluster was localized to a ~31 kb DNA region, consisting of 19 open reading frames that encode five nonribosomal peptide synthetases (ChmHIJLO), one modular polyketide synthase (ChmP), six tailoring enzymes (ChmFGMNQR), two regulatory proteins (ChmAB), and four resistance proteins (ChmA′CDE). A model for chalkophomycin biosynthesis is proposed based on functional assignments from sequence analysis and structure modelling, and is further supported by analogy to over 100 chm-type gene clusters in public databases. Our studies thus set the stage to fully investigate chalkophomycin biosynthesis and to engineer chalkophomycin analogues through a synthetic biology approach.

A new type of spherical node was used to design a laboratory-scale prototype of a six-leg lattice of steel tubes and concrete for application as a wind turbine tower. Repeated load tests were performed on the prototype tower for several weeks to evaluate its load-carrying capacity, deformation, energy consumption, stress distribution based on damage patterns, hysteresis curves, skeleton curves, strength, and stiffness degradation curves. The findings indicated that the prototype tower underwent thread damage to the high-strength bolts of the inclined web and weld damage between the inclined web and sealing plate. Although the stress differences between different measurement points were significant, the stress values were small at most of the measurement points. The maximum equivalent stress value was 294 MPa, which appeared in the middle layer of the BC surface. The P-Δ hysteresis curve had an inverse “S”-shape, and the bearing capacity was high. The maximum energy dissipation appeared in the 1.75 Δy loading stage. The peak load of the specimen can reach 376.2 kN, and the corresponding peak displacement is 37 mm. However, the average ductility coefficient was only 2.33, indicating little plastic deformation. The maximum strain of the tower column foot is 1800 με, and the force of the inclined web member in the middle layer is the largest. The strain of the transverse web bar increased significantly after the tower yielded, which contributed to maintaining the integrity of the structure.

During comprehensive regional prospecting evaluation and delineation of a prospecting target area, various types of data, including geological, geophysical, geochemical, and remote sensing, are usually integrated and visualized in a unified spatial environment, making it convenient for researchers to identify mineralization. To maximize the precision of spatial boundaries, the maps traditionally used in prospecting are predominantly in vector formats. However, with the rapid development of modern real-time 3D graphics and computer cartography technology, raster maps can now provide richer detail representation compared to traditional vector maps while still meeting the precision requirements. In this paper, we present a new GPU-based 3D visualization method for spatial data, specifically, two types of bitmap-based maps called dynamic geochemical maps (DGMs) and interactive geological maps (IGMs). A novel software system implementing this method was developed and has been applied in the exploration of the Zhunuo ore district, Tibet, showing large advantages over traditional vector maps.

Benzimidazole fungicides are a class of highly effective, low-toxicity, systemic broad-spectrum fungicides developed in the 1960s and 1970s, based on the fungicidal activity of the benzimidazole ring structure. They exhibit biological activities including anticancer, antibacterial, and antiparasitic effects. Due to their particularly outstanding antibacterial properties, they are widely used in agriculture to prevent and control various plant diseases caused by fungi. The main products of benzimidazole fungicides include benomyl, carbendazim, thiabendazole, albendazole, thiophanate, thiophanate-methyl, fuberidazole, methyl (1-{[(5-cyanopentyl)amino]carbonyl}-1H-benzimidazol-2-yl) carbamate, and carbendazim salicylate. This article mainly reviews the physicochemical properties, toxicological properties, disease control efficacy, and pesticide residue and detection technologies of the aforementioned nine benzimidazole fungicides and their main metabolite (2-aminobenzimidazole). On this basis, a brief outlook on the future research directions of benzimidazole fungicides is presented.

Surface freezing and thawing processes pose significant influences on surface water and energy balances, which, in turn, affect vegetation growth, soil moisture, carbon cycling, and terrestrial ecosystems. At present, the changes in surface freezing and thawing states are hotspots of ecological research, but the variations of surface frozen days (SFDs) are less studied, especially in the permafrost areas covered with boreal forest, and the influence of the environmental factors on the SFDs is not clear. Utilizing the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer for EOS (AMSRE) and Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2 (AMSR2) brightness temperature data, this study applies the Freeze–Thaw Discriminant Function Algorithm (DFA) to explore the spatiotemporal variability features of SFDs in the Northeast China Permafrost Zone (NCPZ) and the relationship between the permafrost distribution and the spatial variability characteristics of SFDs; additionally, the Optimal Parameters-based Geographical Detector is employed to determine the factors that affect SFDs. The results showed that the SFDs in the NCPZ decreased with a rate of −0.43 d/a from 2002 to 2021 and significantly decreased on the eastern and western slopes of the Greater Khingan Mountains. Meanwhile, the degree of spatial fluctuation of SFDs increased gradually with a decreasing continuity of permafrost. Snow cover and air temperature were the two most important factors influencing SFD variability in the NCPZ, accounting for 83.9% and 74.8% of the spatial variation, respectively, and SFDs increased gradually with increasing snow cover and decreasing air temperature. The strongest explanatory power of SFD spatial variability was found to be the combination of air temperature and precipitation, which had a coefficient of 94.2%. Moreover, the combination of any two environmental factors increased this power. The findings of this study can be used to design ecological environmental conservation and engineer construction policies in high-latitude permafrost zones with forest cover.

YTH N6-methyladenosine RNA binding protein 1 (YTHDF1), an m6A reader, has a role in the development and progression of breast cancer as well as the immunological microenvironment. The networks of competing endogenous RNA in cancer have received much attention in research. In tumor gene therapy, the regulatory networks of m6A and competing endogenous RNA are increasingly emerging as a new route. We evaluated the relationship between the YTHDF1 expression, overall survival, and clinicopathology of breast cancer using TCGA, PrognoScan, and other datasets. We used Western blot to demonstrate that YTHDF1 is substantially expressed in breast cancer tissues. Furthermore, we explored YTHDF1′s functions in the tumor mutational burden, microsatellite instability, and tumor microenvironment. Our findings indicate that YTHDF1 is a critical component of the m6A regulatory proteins in breast cancer and may have a particular function in the immunological microenvironment. Crucially, we investigated the relationship between YTHDF1 and the associated competitive endogenous RNA regulatory networks, innovatively creating three such networks (Dehydrogenase/Reductase 4-Antisense RNA 1-miR-378g-YTHDF1, HLA Complex Group 9-miR-378g-YTHDF1, Taurine Up-regulated 1-miR-378g-YTHDF1). Furthermore, we showed that miR-378g could inhibit the expression of YTHDF1, and that miR-378g/YTHDF1 could impact MDA-MB-231 proliferation. We speculate that YTHDF1 may serve as a biomarker for poor prognosis and differential diagnosis, impact the growth of breast cancer cells via the ceRNA network axis, and be a target for immunotherapy against breast cancer.

Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) is a typical heavy metal pollutant, making its removal from wastewater imperative. Although nanosized zero-valent iron (nZVI) and graphene-based materials are excellent remediation materials, they have drawbacks, such as agglomeration and being difficult to recycle. A facile synthesis method for decorating reduced graphene oxide (rGO) with ultrathin nZVI (within 10 nm) was explored in this study in order to develop an effective tool for Cr(VI) detoxication. Cu particles were doped in these composites for electron-transfer enhancement and were verified to improve the rate by 2.4~3.4 times. Batch experiments were conducted at different pHs, initial concentrations, ionic strengths, and humic acid (HA) concentrations. From these observations, it was found that the acid condition and appearance of Cu and rGO enhanced the treatment capacity. This procedure was fitted with a pseudo-second-order model, and the existence of NaCl and HA impeded it to some extent. Cr(VI) could be detoxified into Cr(III) and precipitated on the surface. Combining these analyses, a kinetics study, and the characterizations before and after the reaction, the removal mechanism of Cr(VI) was further discussed as a complex process involving adsorption, reduction, and precipitation. The maximum removal capacity of 156.25 mg g−1 occurred in the acid condition, providing a potential Cr(VI) remediation method.

Tannic acid (TA) has been recently considered as a new dough additive for improving the bread-making quality of wheat. However, the effects of TA supplementation on the sensory quality parameters (color, crumb grain structure, and sensory properties) of bread have not been studied. Further, the potential of TA supplementation in bread-making quality improvement has not been evaluated by using commercial flour. In the present study, three commercial wheat flours (namely, XL, QZG, and QZZ) with different gluten qualities were used to evaluate the effects of TA supplementation (in concentrations of 0.1% and 0.3%, respectively). TA supplementation did not change the proximate composition of the breads but increased the volumes and specific volumes of XL and QZG breads. TA supplementation enhanced antioxidant activities, with 0.3% TA significantly increasing the antioxidant capacities of bread made from all three flour samples by approximately four-fold (FRAP method)/three-fold (ABTS method). Positive effects of TA on the reduction in crumb hardness, gumminess, and chewiness were observed in the XL bread, as determined by the texture profile analysis. For the analyses on visual and sensory attributes, our results suggest that TA did not affect the crust color, but only slightly reduced the L* (lightness) and b* (yellowness) values of the crumb and increased the a* (redness) value. TA supplementation also increased the porosity, total cell area, and mean cell area. Satisfactorily, the sensory evaluation results demonstrate that TA-supplemented breads did not exhibit negative sensory attributes when compared to the non-TA-added breads; rather, the attributes were even increased. In summary, TA-supplemented breads generally had not only better baking quality attributes and enhanced antioxidant activities, but, more importantly, presented high consumer acceptance in multiple commercial flour samples. Our results support the commercial potential of TA to be used as a dough improver.

The objectives of the study were to screen one or several Chinese herbal extracts with good ammonia emission reduction effects using an in vitro gas production study. The study consisted of a control (without Chinese herbal extract), and 11 experimental groups with added cinnamon extract (CE), Osmanthus extract (OE), tangerine peel extract (TPE), dandelion extract (DE), Coptis chinensis extract (CCE), honeysuckle extract (HE), Pulsatilla root extract (PRE), yucca extract (YE), licorice extract (LE), Ginkgo biloba extract (GBE), or astragalus extract (AE). The results showed that HE, PRE, YE, LE, GBE, and AE significantly reduced ammonia production (p ≤ 0.05). The most significant ammonia inhibition was achieved via AE, resulting in a 26.76% reduction. In all treatments, Chinese herbal extracts had no significant effect on pH, conductivity, or uric acid, urea, and nitrate-nitrogen concentrations (p > 0.05). However, AE significantly reduced urease activity and the relative activity of uricase (p ≤ 0.05). AE significantly increased the relative abundance of Bacteroides and decreased the relative abundance of Clostridium, Desulfovibrio, and Prevotell (p ≤ 0.05). Astragalus extract inhibited ammonia emission from laying hens by changing the gut microbial community structure, reducing the relative abundance of ammonia-producing bacteria, and reducing microorganisms’ uricase and urease activities.

Streptococcus pyogenes (group A Streptococcus; GAS), a Gram-positive coccal bacterium, poses a significant global disease burden, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Its manifestations can range from pharyngitis and skin infection to severe and aggressive diseases, such as necrotizing fasciitis and streptococcal toxic shock syndrome. At present, although GAS is still sensitive to penicillin, there are cases of treatment failure for GAS pharyngitis, and antibiotic therapy does not universally prevent subsequent disease. In addition to strengthening global molecular epidemiological surveillance and monitoring of antibiotic resistance, developing a safe and effective licensed vaccine against GAS would be the most effective way to broadly address GAS-related diseases. Over the past decades, the development of GAS vaccines has been stalled, mainly because of the wide genetic heterogeneity of GAS and the diverse autoimmune responses to GAS. With outbreaks of scarlet fever in various countries in recent years, accelerating the development of a safe and effective vaccine remains a high priority. When developing a GAS vaccine, many factors need to be considered, including the selection of antigen epitopes, avoidance of self-response, and vaccine coverage. Given the challenges in GAS vaccine development, this review describes the important virulence factors that induce disease by GAS infection and how this has influenced the progression of vaccine development efforts, focusing on several candidate vaccines that are further along in development.

China, the largest hog producer and consumer globally, has long experienced significant fluctuations in hog prices, partly due to the lack of rational expectations for future hog spot prices. However, on 8 January 2021, China’s first futures in animal husbandry, the live hog futures, were listed on the Dalian Commodity Exchange. To investigate the forecasting performance of the new live hog futures on forthcoming hog spot prices, we developed six futures-based forecasting models and utilized data on daily hog spot and futures prices from January 2021 to March 2023. Our results show that all six models consistently generate more accurate forecasts than the no-change model across six prediction horizons and four accuracy measures, indicating that China’s new live hog futures prices help forecast forthcoming hog spot prices. Among the futures-based forecasting models, futures spread-based models generally produce the best forecasts for one-, two-, three-, and four-month-ahead forecasting, while the simple linear regression using both spot and futures prices is the best for five- and six-month-ahead forecasting. Our results suggest that live hog futures are a promising and practical tool for various stakeholders in China’s hog industry to develop rational expectations for future hog spot prices.

Evapotranspiration (ET) plays an essential role in water balance and ecological environment changes. The Yangtze River Basin (YRB) is a typical monsoon climate zone. Most existing studies on the impact of climatic factors on annual ET have overlooked the seasonal effect. This study quantitatively analyzed the spatiotemporal variation characteristics of ET and its relationship with climatic factors at the annual and monthly scales in the YRB using high−spatial−resolution PML_V2 ET data from 2001 to 2020. Results showed that: (1) the spatiotemporal distribution of the regions with significant correlation between ET and individual climatic factors (i.e., air temperature, solar radiation and precipitation) in the YRB showed obvious cyclical changes in month, and the spatial change pattern is strongly related to the elevation; (2) the area proportion of the dominant climatic factors affecting annual ET in the study area was characterized by solar radiation > specific humidity > precipitation > air temperature > wind speed. However, monthly ET in most areas of the YRB was driven by solar radiation and air temperature, especially in summer and autumn, while ET in spring and winter was mainly driven by solar radiation, air temperature, and specific humidity.

Chinese sweet rice wines (CSRW) are traditional, regionally distinct alcoholic beverages that are generally brewed with glutinous rice and fermentation starters. This study aimed to characterize microbial communities and volatile compounds of CSRW starters and explore correlations between them. The major volatiles in starters include 1-heptanol, 1-octanol, 2-nonanol, phenylethyl alcohol, 2-nonanone, acetophenone, and benzaldehyde. Microbiological analysis based on high-throughput sequencing (HTS) technology demonstrated that starter bacterial communities are dominated by Weissella, Pediococcus, and Lactobacillus, while Saccharomycopsis and Rhizopus predominate in fungal communities. Carbohydrate and amino acid metabolism are the most active metabolic pathways in starters. Spearman correlation analysis revealed that 15 important volatile compounds including alcohols, acids, aldehydes and esters were significantly positively correlated with nine microbial genera (|r| > 0.7, p < 0.05), including five bacterial genera (i.e., Weissella, Pediococcus, Lactobacillus, Bacillus, and Nocardiopsis) and four fungal genera (i.e., Saccharomycopsis, Rhizopus, Wickerhamomyces, and Cyberlindnera), spanning 19 distinct relationships and these microorganisms were considered the core functional microorganisms in CSRW starters. The most important positive correlations detected between phenylethyl alcohol and Weissella or Saccharomycopsis and between 2-nonanol and Pediococcus. This study can serve as a reference to guide the development of defined starter cultures for improving the aromatic quality of CSRW.

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) poses a global threat to pig health and results in significant economic losses. Impaired innate and adaptive immune responses are evident during PRRSV infection. Cyclic GMP-AMP synthase (cGAS), a classical pattern recognition receptor recognizing mainly intracytoplasmic DNA, induces type I IFN responses through the cGAS-STING signaling pathway. It has also been demonstrated that cGAS-STING is involved in PRRSV infection. This study utilized the qRT-PCR, ELISA, and WB methods to examine the effects of Astragaloside IV (AS-IV) on the regulation of innate immune function and cGAS-STING signaling pathway in porcine alveolar macrophages. The results showed that AS-IV attenuated the decreased innate immune function caused by PRRSV infection, restored the inhibited cGAS-STING signaling pathway, and increased the expression of interferon, ultimately exerting antiviral effects. Moreover, these results suggest that AS-IV may be a promising candidate for a new anti-PRRSV antiviral, and its mechanism of action may provide insights for developing novel antiviral agents.

To better understand how fish communities respond to environmental changes under extreme climate events, we examine changes in fish communities in Beibu Gulf during strong El Niño and La Niña events. Strong La Niña and El Niño events affect the composition, abundance, and distribution of fish communities in Beibu Gulf. Fish community distribution and composition change before and after La Niña and El Niño events, and dominant species within them change with stable fishing intensity. The abundance and distribution of small pelagic fish such as Japanese jack mackerel (Trachurus japonicus) and Japanese scad (Decapterus maruadsi) are the most affected. Using a generalized additive model (GAM), we explore relationships between the abundance of T. japonicus and D. maruadsi and a suite of environmental variables. The GAM results revealed that sea surface salinity and sea surface temperature best explain changes in catch per unit effort of these two species during a La Niña event; depth, sea surface temperature, and mixed layer depth during an El Niño event. The results obtained in this study will offer support for implementing more-accurate, scientific fisheries management measures.

Live attenuated vaccine is one of the most effective vaccines against flavivirus. Recently, site-directed mutation of the flavivirus genome using reverse genetics techniques has been used for the rapid development of attenuated vaccines. However, this technique relies on basic research of critical virulence loci of the virus. To screen the attenuated sites in dengue virus, a total of eleven dengue virus type four mutant strains with deletion of N-glycosylation sites in the NS1 protein were designed and constructed. Ten of them (except for the N207-del mutant strain) were successfully rescued. Out of the ten strains, one mutant strain (N130del+207-209QQA) was found to have significantly reduced virulence through neurovirulence assay in suckling mice, but was genetically unstable. Further purification using the plaque purification assay yielded a genetically stable attenuated strain #11-puri9 with mutations of K129T, N130K, N207Q, and T209A in the NS1 protein and E99D in the NS2A protein. Identifying the virulence loci by constructing revertant mutant and chimeric viruses revealed that five amino acid adaptive mutations in the dengue virus type four non-structural proteins NS1 and NS2A dramatically affected its neurovirulence and could be used in constructing attenuated dengue chimeric viruses. Our study is the first to obtain an attenuated dengue virus strain through the deletion of amino acid residues at the N-glycosylation site, providing a theoretical basis for understanding the pathogenesis of the dengue virus and developing its live attenuated vaccines.

High-tech small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) play an important role in the high-quality economic development in a country. Nevertheless, due to the difficulties banks or other financial institutions have in accurately assessing their credit levels, financing difficulties have become the biggest bottleneck restricting the progress of high-tech SMEs, and therefore, this paper aims to construct a credit evaluation indicator system of high-tech SMEs. Based on prior studies and the characteristics of high-tech SMEs, this paper constructs an indicator system from financial and nonfinancial dimensions, including 22 measurement indicators reflecting the operation status, development potential, quality, and competitiveness of an enterprise. Principal component analysis (PCA) and a Delphi-analytic hierarchy process (AHP) method are employed for the evaluation. This indicator system innovates from the social capital perspective, and by setting more novel nonfinancial indicators, the system achieves a more comprehensive evaluation of credit level. This paper also performs an empirical application using the data from 125 enterprises in the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei region of China, and further performs an empirical study on the external environment’s impact on the credit level. The empirical results all show consistency with existing studies, verifying the workability and validity of the indicator system we constructed.

A dynamic vision sensor is an optical sensor that focuses on dynamic changes and outputs event information containing only position, time, and polarity. It has the advantages of high temporal resolution, high dynamic range, low data volume, and low power consumption. However, a single event can only indicate that the increase or decrease in light exceeds the threshold at a certain pixel position and a certain moment. In order to further study the ability and characteristics of event information to represent targets, this paper proposes an event information visualization method with adaptive temporal resolution. Compared with methods with constant time intervals and a constant number of events, it can better convert event information into pseudo-frame images. Additionally, in order to explore whether the pseudo-frame image can efficiently complete the task of target detection according to its characteristics, this paper designs a target detection network named YOLOE. Compared with other algorithms, it has a more balanced detection effect. By constructing a dataset and conducting experimental verification, the detection accuracy of the image obtained by the event information visualization method with adaptive temporal resolution was 5.11% and 4.74% higher than that obtained using methods with a constant time interval and number of events, respectively. The average detection accuracy of pseudo-frame images in the YOLOE network designed in this paper is 85.11%, and the number of detection frames per second is 109. Therefore, the effectiveness of the proposed visualization method and the good performance of the designed detection network are verified.

Previous work has demonstrated that end-to-end neural sequence models work well for document-level event role filler extraction. However, the end-to-end neural network model suffers from the problem of not being able to utilize global information, resulting in incomplete extraction of document-level event arguments. This is because the inputs to BiLSTM are all single-word vectors with no input of contextual information. This phenomenon is particularly pronounced at the document level. To address this problem, we propose key-value memory networks to enhance document-level contextual information, and the overall model is represented at two levels: the sentence-level and document-level. At the sentence-level, we use BiLSTM to obtain key sentence information. At the document-level, we use a key-value memory network to enhance document-level representations by recording information about those words in articles that are sensitive to contextual similarity. We fuse two levels of contextual information by means of a fusion formula. We perform various experimental validations on the MUC-4 dataset, and the results show that the model using key-value memory networks works better than the other models.

The interface plays an important role in determining strength and toughness in multiphase systems and the accurate measurement of the interface structure in single crystal (SX) Ni-based superalloy is also essential. In this work, the γ and γ′ lattice constant, γ/γ′ interface width at dendritic and interdendritic region of casting and solution treatment SX Ni-based superalloy is measured. Various advanced equipment is used to characterize γ/γ′ interface nanostructure. A typical correlation between interface width and γ/γ′ misfit is also summarized. The interface width in the dendritic region of the as-cast sample is larger than that in the interdendritic region. The misfit in the dendritic region is larger than that in the interdendritic region, which has a trend of negative development. There is a common law of the as-cast interdendritic and dendrite interface sample, where the absolute value of the misfit between the two phases is increasing with the phase interface broadening. The comparison of the as-cast and heat-treated interdendritic sample shows that after heat treatment, the phase interface width increases, the misfit decreases, the lattice constant of γ phase increases, and the lattice constant of the γ′ phase decreases. By comparing the as-cast and heat treated dendrites, the absolute value of the misfit of the as-cast dendrite sample is significantly smaller than that of the heat-treated sample, and the misfit increases with the interface broadening. The comparison between interdendritic and dendritic heat-treated samples shows that the absolute value of the misfit between the two phases is smaller than that of the dendritic as-cast samples, and the absolute value of the misfit also increases with the phase interface broadening. In conclusion, property heat treatment can significantly increase the lattice constants of the γ and γ’ phases, reduce the lattice mismatch at the interface of the two phases, and improve the high temperature stability of the alloy. A better understanding of the microstructure of Ni-based single crystal superalloys will provide guidance for the subsequent design of more advanced nickel-based single-crystal superalloys.

Permafrost in northeast China, which is at the southern edge of the high-latitude permafrost belt in Eurasia, is extremely sensitive to climate warming. However, the distribution of permafrost in the region in recent years has been poorly studied, and there is a lack of understanding of the relative importance of environmental factors affecting the region. Based on observed ground surface temperature (GST) data, this study quantifies changes in the permafrost area in northeast China from 1982 to 2020 using a surface frost number model, and the influencing factors are identified based on dominance analysis and spatial correlation analysis. The results suggest that the permafrost in northeast China during the observation period underwent degradation with a degradation rate of 0.33 × 104 km2/a. In addition, the permafrost degradation also exhibited altitudinal and latitudinal zonality. Permafrost degradation under typical grassland, deciduous forest, and savannah cover was more significant than that under evergreen forest, mixed forest, and shrubbery cover. As revealed by the dominance analysis results, the annual average snow cover, annual average snow depth and annual average normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) had the largest contributions to the variance of the permafrost area in northeast China, accounting for 88.3% of the total variance contribution of the six influencing factors. The spatial correlation results reveal that areas with a significantly increased NDVI and significantly reduced snow depth and snow cover were coincident with areas with significantly degraded permafrost. Hence, the snow cover, snow depth, and NDVI were found to have the greatest influence on the permafrost distribution in northeast China. The results of this study evidently increase the understanding of the changing permafrost in northeast China, providing important knowledge about permafrost for researchers and the related community.

A physiologically-based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model represents the structural components of the body with physiologically relevant compartments connected via blood flow rates described by mathematical equations to determine drug disposition. PBPK models are used in the pharmaceutical sector for drug development, precision medicine, and the chemical industry to predict safe levels of exposure during the registration of chemical substances. However, one area of application where PBPK models have been scarcely used is forensic science. In this review, we give an overview of PBPK models successfully developed for several illicit drugs and environmental chemicals that could be applied for forensic interpretation, highlighting the gaps, uncertainties, and limitations.

The herbaceous peony (Paeonia lactiflora Pall.) is widely cultivated as an ornamental, medicinal and edible plant in China. Drought stress can seriously affect the growth of herbaceous peony and reduce its quality. In our previous research, a significantly differentially expressed gene, PM19L, was obtained in herbaceous peony under drought stress based on transcriptome analysis, but little is known about its function. In this study, the first PM19L that was isolated in herbaceous peony was comprised of 910 bp, and was designated as PlPM19L (OP480984). It had a complete open reading frame of 537 bp and encoded a 178-amino acid protein with a molecular weight of 18.95 kDa, which was located in the membrane. When PlPM19L was transferred into tobacco, the transgenic plants had enhanced tolerance to drought stress, potentially due to the increase in the abscisic acid (ABA) content and the reduction in the level of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). In addition, the enhanced ability to scavenge H2O2 under drought stress led to improvements in the enzyme activity and the potential photosynthetic capacity. These results combined suggest that PlPM19L is a key factor to conferring drought stress tolerance in herbaceous peony and provide a scientific theoretical basis for the following improvement in the drought resistance of herbaceous peony and other plants through genetic engineering technology.

Chicken colibacillosis—the most common disease of poultry, is caused mainly by avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC). It has a major impact on the poultry industry worldwide. The present study was conducted to investigate the therapeutic effects of Xiaochaihu Decoction (XCHD) supplementation on clinical manifestation, organ index, bacterial load in organ and inflammatory mediators in a chicken model challenged with APEC. The results showed that all doses of XCHD significantly elevated the survival rate of infected chickens. XCHD improved the clinical signs of infected chickens, reduced the organ index, reduced the bacterial load of organs, and inhibited the secretion of serum and pulmonary inflammatory factors IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF- α. Taken together, this study demonstrates that XCHD had protective effects on APEC-infected chickens. Its mechanism includes anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects. These findings may contribute to the further study of the mechanism of the formula and the prevention or treatment of colibacillosis in poultry. The significance of this study is that it provides a certain theoretical basis for the replacement of antibiotics by XCHD.

Foods containing chestnuts (Castanea mollissima Blume) are relatively uncommon, despite the high nutrient and starch contents and purported health benefits. In this study, we examine the flavor-related metabolites, volatile compounds, and amino acids in a traditional glutinous rice fermented beverage supplemented with chestnuts as a fermentation substrate for lactic acid bacteria (LAB). Changes in antioxidant activity towards free radicals and effects on cellular oxidative stress are compared between beverages with or without chestnuts. The fermented chestnut-rice beverage (FCRB) has higher sensory scores and a wider range of volatiles and flavor-related compounds (74 vs. 38 species compounds), but lower amino acid contents, than the traditional fermented glutinous rice beverage (TFRB). In free radical scavenging assays, the FCRB exhibits higher activity than the TFRB in vitro. Furthermore, while neither beverage induces cytotoxity in Caco-2 cells at concentrations up to 2 mg/mL, pretreatment with the FCRB results in lower rates of apoptosis and necrosis and higher overall viability in cells with H2O2-induced oxidative stress compared to pretreatment with the TFRB. The enhanced reactive oxygen species neutralization in vitro and protection against oxidative damage in cells, coupled with increased diversity of volatiles and flavor-related metabolites of LAB, support the addition of chestnuts to enhance flavor profile and antioxidant properties of fermented functional foods.

The poliovirus receptor (PVR) is a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily (Ig SF) and is essential for the promotion of cancer cell proliferation and invasion. However, the correlation between PVR expression and prognosis as well as immune infiltration in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains unclear. The expression level of PVR was quantified using the Tumor and Tumor Immunity Evaluation Resource (TIMER) and Sangerbox. The Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database was used to validate the PVR expression. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to evaluate the feasibility of using PVR as a differentiating factor according to the area under curve (AUC) score. A PVR binding protein network was built using the STRING tool. An enrichment analysis using the R package clusterProfiler was used to explore the potential function of PVR. Immune infiltration analysis was calculated with ESTIMATE algorithms. We also assessed the correlation between PVR expression and immune infiltration by the single-sample Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (ssGSEA) method from the R package GSVA and TIMER database. The results showed that PVR was commonly overexpressed in multiple types of tumors including HCC. The data of GSE64041 confirmed the same result. The ROC curve suggested that PVR could be a potential diagnostic biomarker. Additionally, high mRNA expression of PVR in HCC was significantly correlated with poor overall survival (OS) and relapse free survival (RFS). Results also indicated correlations between PVR mRNA expression with the level of infiltration immune cells including B cells, CD8+ T cells, cytotoxic cells, DCs, CD56dim NK cells, pDCs, and Th2 cells. Furthermore, the PVR level was significantly correlated with immune markers for immunosuppressive cells in HCC. In conclusion, PVR might be an important regulator of tumor immune cell infiltration and a valuable prognostic biomarker in HCC. However, additional work is needed to fully elucidate the underlying mechanisms.

Fault detection of the electric vehicle battery system is vital for safe driving, energy economy, and lifetime extension. This paper proposes a data-driven method to achieve early and accurate battery system fault detection to realize rapid early warning. The method first adopts the support vector data description model mapping the feature of unlabeled voltage and temperature into a minimum volume hypersphere in high-dimensional space. When the feature is located outside the hypersphere, it is judged to be faulty. Then, to overcome the problem of hyperparameters selection, Bayesian optimization and a small amount of label data are used to iteratively train the model. This step can greatly improve the fault detection ability of the model, which is conducive to mining early and minor faults. Finally, the proposed model is compared with three unsupervised fault detection models, principal component analysis, kernel principal component analysis, and support vector data description to validate the performance of fault detection and robustness, respectively. The experimental results show that: 1. the proposed model has high detection accuracy in all four fault datasets, especially in the highly concealed cumulative short-circuit fault, which is substantially ahead of the other three models; and 2. The proposed model has higher and more stable accuracy than the other three models even in the case of a large range of signal-to-noise ratio.

Influenza vaccination rates among Chinese middle school students are low. This study aims to explore the influencing factors of vaccination among middle school students and promote vaccination. We conducted a mixed-methods study, integrating a questionnaire survey among 9145 middle school students in four cities in China and semi-structured interviews with 35 middle school students to understand their attitudes and perceptions toward vaccination based on the Health Belief Model. We found the overall vaccination rate was 38.2% (3493/9145), with students in Beijing, boarding at school, or senior high school showing higher values than their counterparts (p < 0.05). Multiple logistic regression results showed that non-boarding (OR = 0.46, 95%CI: 0.42–0.51) and perceived barriers (OR = 0.97, 95%CI: 0.96–0.98) were unfavorable factors for influenza vaccination, whereas perceived susceptibility (OR = 1.07, 95%CI: 1.05–1.08), perceived benefits (OR = 1.02, 95%CI: 1.01–1.04), cues to action (OR = 1.08, 95%CI: 1.05–1.11), and self-efficacy (OR = 1.04, 95%CI: 1.02–1.07) were facilitators. Qualitative results indicated that positive health beliefs, school, and the home environment contribute to vaccination. In conclusion, the influenza vaccination rate among middle school students remains low. The concerns about the safety and potential side effects of vaccines are the main barriers to vaccination, underscoring the need for strengthening communication, education, and information among students and their teachers/parents.

The recognition of urban functional areas (UFAs) is of great significance for the understanding of urban structures and urban planning. Due to the limitation of data sources, early research was characterized by problems such as singular data, incomplete results, and inadequate consideration of the socioeconomic environment. The development of multi-source big data brings new opportunities for dynamic recognition of UFAs. In this study, a sub-block function recognition framework that integrates multi-feature information from building footprints, point-of-interest (POI) data, and Landsat images is proposed to classify UFAs at the sub-block level using a random forest model. The recognition accuracies of single- and mixed-function areas in the core urban area of Guangzhou, China, obtained by this framework are found to be significantly higher than those of other methods. The overall accuracy (OA) of single-function areas is 82%, which is 8–36% higher than that of other models. The research conclusions show that the introduction of the three-dimensional (3D) features of buildings and finer land cover features can improve the recognition accuracy of UFAs. The proposed method that uses open access data and achieves comprehensive results provides a more practical solution for the recognition of UFAs.

In recent years, malignant breast cancer metastasis has caused a great increase in mortality. Research on the genetic and molecular mechanisms of malignant breast cancer has continued to deepen, and targeted therapy has become the general trend. Among them, competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA)-related molecules have received much attention. Homeobox transcript antisense RNA (HOTAIR) has been reported to function extensively as a ceRNA in breast cancer. Notably, miR-203 and Caveolin 1 (CAV1) have also been found to play a role in breast cancer. However, the relationship between the three remains unclear. In this study, we present a new mechanic through bioinformatics tool and basic experiments: the HOTAIR/miR-203/CAV1 axis, which complemented the role network of HOTAIR as a ceRNA, thus, it will provide a novel potential idea for breast cancer research and therapy.

The single-crystal Ni-based superalloys, which have excellent mechanical properties at high temperatures, are commonly used for turbine blades in a variety of aero engines and industrial gas turbines. Focusing on the phase interface of a second-generation single-crystal Ni-based superalloy, in-situ TEM observation was conducted at room temperature and high temperatures. Intensity ratio analysis was conducted for the measurement of two-phase interface width. The improved geometric phase analysis method, where the adaptive mask selection method is introduced, was used for the measurement of the strain field near the phase interface. The strained irregular transition region is consistent with the calculated interface width using intensity ratio analysis. An intensity ratio analysis and strain measurement near the interface can corroborate and complement each other, contributing to the interface structure evaluation. Using TEM in-situ heating and Fourier transform, the change of dislocation density in the γ phase near the two-phase interface of the single-crystal Ni-based superalloy was analyzed. The dislocation density decreases first with the increase in temperature, consistent with the characteristics of metal quenching, and increases sharply at 450 °C. The correlation between the variation of dislocation density at high temperatures and the intermediate temperature brittleness was also investigated.

The existing nonuniformity correction methods generally have the defects of image blur, artifacts, image over-smoothing, and nonuniform residuals. It is difficult for these methods to meet the requirements of image enhancement in various complex application scenarios. In particular, when these methods are applied to dim small target images, they may remove dim small targets as noise points due to the image over-smoothing. This paper draws on the idea of a residual network and proposes a two-stage learning network based on the imaging mechanism of an infrared line-scan system. We adopt a multi-scale feature extraction unit and design a gain correction sub-network and an offset correction sub-network, respectively. Then, we pre-train the two sub-networks independently. Finally, we cascade the two sub-networks into a two-stage network and train it. The experimental results show that the PSNR gain of our method can reach more than 15 dB, and it can achieve excellent performance in different backgrounds and different intensities of nonuniform noise. Moreover, our method can avoid losing texture details or dim small targets after effectively removing nonuniform noise.

Climate warming can affect freeze–thaw cycle (FTCs) patterns in northern high-latitude regions and may affect permafrost carbon emissions. The response of carbon release and microbial communities to FTCs has not been well characterized. Here, we conducted laboratory incubation experiments to investigate the relationships among carbon emissions, bacterial community, and soil variables in a permafrost-affected forest–wetland ecotone in Northeast China. The emission rates of CO2 and CH4 increased during the FTCs. FTC amplitude, FTC frequency, and patch type had significant effects on carbon emissions. FTCs increased the contents of soil DOC, NH4+-N, and NO3−-N but reduced bacterial alpha diversity. CO2 emissions were mainly affected by bacterial alpha diversity and composition, and the inorganic nitrogen content was the important factor affecting CH4 emissions. Our findings indicated that FTCs could significantly regulate CO2 and CH4 emissions by reducing bacterial community diversity and increasing the concentration of available soil substrates. Our findings shed new light on the microorganism-substrate mechanisms regulating the response patterns of the soil carbon cycle to FTCs in permafrost regions.

The introduction of nanomaterials into polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) resin has been effective for mechanically reinforcing PMMA for application in oral denture bases. However, these methods cannot simultaneously improve the mechanical and antibacterial properties, which limits widespread clinical application. Here, we self-assembled binary nanocomposites of boron nitride nanosheets (h-BNNs) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) as nanofillers and incorporated the nanofillers into PMMA. The aim of this study was to achieve antibacterial effects while significantly improving the mechanical properties of PMMA and provide a theoretical basis for further clinical application. We employed scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy (Raman), Ultraviolet visible spectrum (UV) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) to investigate the microscopic morphology and composition of PMMA containing nanocomposites with different mass fraction. In addition, the content of the h-BNNs/AgNPs was 1 wt%, and the compressive strength and flexural strength of pure PMMA were improved by 53.5% and 56.7%, respectively. When the concentration of the nanocomposite in the PMMA resin was 1.4 wt%, the antibacterial rate was 92.1%. Overall, synergistically reinforcing PMMA composite resin with a multi-dimensional nanocomposite structure provided a new perspective for expanding not only the application of resins in clinical settings but also the research and development of new composite resins.

Frigate tuna Auxis thazard fishery is considered a potential marine resource in the open South China Sea (SCS). However, little is known about the spatial and temporal distribution of its habitat, and how this may respond to environmental changes. Using fish survey and remote sensing data from 2015–2019, we applied generalized additive models to identify relationships between environmental factors and the distribution of A. thazard in the SCS. To examine seasonal patterns in the habitat of A. thazard in the SCS, we generated a habitat suitability index model using environmental factors screened by generalized additive models. Results showed that A. thazard migrates from south to north in the SCS, and its suitable habitat is patchily distributed. Significant environmental factors affecting the habitat of A. thazard distribution were different in different seasons; we demonstrated A. thazard to be sensitive to Chl-a in spring (optimum 0.155, optimal range ~0.1252–0.1840), and in summer to be sensitive to SST (optimum 30.405, optimal range ~29.789–31.021) and SSH (optimum 0.741, optimal range ~0.618–0.864). Suitable habitat in spring occurs mainly in northeastern areas, while in summer it occurs mainly around the southeastern Nansha Islands. Compared with that in spring, the area of suitable habitat increases in summer, as does the habitat suitability index of the entire sea area. These results improve our understanding of environmental factors that affect the distribution of A. thazard habitat in the SCS, and provide a scientific basis for the development and management of A. thazard resources.

Solid-state lighting technology, where light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are used for energy conversion from electricity to light, is considered a next-generation lighting technology. One of the significant challenges in the field is the synthesis of high-efficiency phosphors for designing phosphor-converted white LEDs under high flux operating currents. Here, we reported the synthesis, structure, and photophysical properties of a tetranuclear Cu(I)–halide cluster phosphor, [bppmCu2I2]2 (bppm = bisdiphenylphosphinemethane), for the fabrication of high-performance white LEDs. The PL investigations demonstrated that the red emission exhibits a near-unity photoluminescence quantum yield at room temperature and unusual spectral broadening with increasing temperature in the crystalline state. Considering the excellent photophysical properties, the crystalline sample of [bppmCu2I2]2 was successfully applied for the fabrication of phosphor-converted white LEDs. The prototype white LED device exhibited a continuous rise in brightness in the range of a high bias current (100–1000 mA) with CRI as high as 84 and CCT of 5828 K, implying great potential for high-quality white LEDs.

Since the first isolation in 1943, the dengue virus (DENV) has spread throughout the world, but effective antiviral drugs or vaccines are still not available. To provide a more stable reporter DENV for vaccine development and antiviral drug screening, we constructed a reporter DENV containing the NanoLuc reporter gene, which was inserted into the 5′ untranslated region and capsid junction region, enabling rapid virus rescue by in vitro ligation. In addition, we established a live imaging mouse model and found that the reporter virus maintained the neurovirulence of prototype DENV before engineering. DENV-4 exhibited dramatically increased neurovirulence following a glycosylation site-defective mutation in the envelope protein. Significant mice mortality with neurological onset symptoms was observed after intracranial infection of wild-type (WT) mice, thus providing a visualization tool for DENV virulence assessment. Using this model, DENV was detected in the intestinal tissues of WT mice after infection, suggesting that intestinal lymphoid tissues play an essential role in DENV pathogenesis.

The research on highly inclined mean motion resonances (MMRs), even retrograde resonances, has drawn more attention in recent years. However, the dynamics of polar resonance with inclination i≈90∘ have received much less attention. This paper systematically studies the dynamics of polar resonance and their effects on the Kozai–Lidov mechanism in the circular restricted three-body problem (CRTBP). The maps of dynamics are obtained through the numerical method and semi-analytical method, by mutual authenticating. We investigate the secular dynamics inside polar resonance. The phase-space portraits on the e−ω plane are plotted under exact polar resonance and considering libration amplitude of critical angle σ. Simultaneously, we investigate the evolution of 5000 particles in polar resonance by numerical integrations. We confirm that the e−ω portraits can entirely explain the results of numerical experiments, which demonstrate that the phase-space portraits on the e−ω plane obtained through the semi-analytical method can represent the real Kozai–Lidov dynamics inside polar resonance. The resonant secular dynamical maps can provide meaningful guidance for predicting the long-term evolution of polar resonant particles. As a supplement, in the polar 2/1 case, we analyze the pure secular dynamics outside resonance, and confirm that the effect of polar resonance on secular dynamics is pronounced and cannot be ignored. Our work is a meaningful supplement to the general inclined cases and can help us understand the evolution of asteroids in polar resonance with the planet.

Cell-based cancer immunotherapy, such as chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) engineered T and natural killer (NK) cell therapies, has become a revolutionary new pillar in cancer treatment. Interleukin 15 (IL-15), a potent immunostimulatory cytokine that potentiates T and NK cell immune responses, has demonstrated the reliability and potency to potentially improve the therapeutic efficacy of current cell therapy. Structurally similar to interleukin 2 (IL-2), IL-15 supports the persistence of CD8+ memory T cells while inhibiting IL-2-induced T cell death that better maintains long-term anti-tumor immunity. In this review, we describe the biology of IL-15, studies on administrating IL-15 and/or its derivatives as immunotherapeutic agents, and IL-15-armored immune cells in adoptive cell therapy. We also discuss the advantages and challenges of incorporating IL-15 in cell-based immunotherapy and provide directions for future investigation.

Small ubiquitin-related modifier (SUMO)-specific protease 1 (SENP1) is a cysteine protease that catalyzes the cleavage of the C-terminus of SUMO1 for the processing of SUMO precursors and deSUMOylation of target proteins. SENP1 is considered to be a promising target for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and prostate cancer. SENP1 Gln597 is located at the unstructured loop connecting the helices α4 to α5. The Q597A mutation of SENP1 allosterically disrupts the hydrolytic reaction of SUMO1 through an unknown mechanism. Here, extensive multiple replicates of microsecond molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, coupled with principal component analysis, dynamic cross-correlation analysis, community network analysis, and binding free energy calculations, were performed to elucidate the detailed mechanism. Our MD simulations showed that the Q597A mutation induced marked dynamic conformational changes in SENP1, especially in the unstructured loop connecting the helices α4 to α5 which the mutation site occupies. Moreover, the Q597A mutation caused conformational changes to catalytic Cys603 and His533 at the active site, which might impair the catalytic activity of SENP1 in processing SUMO1. Moreover, binding free energy calculations revealed that the Q597A mutation had a minor effect on the binding affinity of SUMO1 to SENP1. Together, these results may broaden our understanding of the allosteric modulation of the SENP1−SUMO1 complex.
