Mycena section Calodontes is macromorphologically distinguished by the collybioid or mycenoid basidiome, which is pink, purple, or violet, and, rarely, reddish-brown or yellowish. It is further characterized by the presence of oxalate crystals in the basal mycelium. The section comprises approximately 40 taxa, of which only five species and one variety exhibit bioluminescence. As part of an extensive study on Mycena sect. Calodontes in Mexico, specimens belonging to this section were collected and subjected to morphological analysis. Sequences from the nuclear internal transcribed spacer (ITS) of nuclear ribosomal DNA, RNA polymerase II large subunit Rpb1 (rpb1), and translation elongation factor-1α (Tef-1α) were generated to infer the relationships within Mycena sect. Calodontes using maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference. The phylogenetic evidence, along with the macro- and micromorphological features, supported the recognition of five new bioluminescent species within Mycena sect. Calodontes. Detailed macro- and micromorphological descriptions, line-drawing illustrations, and light and dark photographs of the new species are provided.

Molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP)-based luminescent chemosensors combine the advantages of the highly specific molecular recognition of the imprinting sites and the high sensitivity with the luminescence detection. These advantages have drawn great attention during the past two decades. Luminescent molecularly imprinted polymers (luminescent MIPs) towards different targeted analytes are constructed with different strategies, such as the incorporation of luminescent functional monomers, physical entrapment, covalent attachment of luminescent signaling elements on the MIPs, and surface-imprinting polymerization on the luminescent nanomaterials. In this review, we will discuss the design strategies and sensing approaches of luminescent MIP-based chemosensors, as well as their selected applications in biosensing, bioimaging, food safety, and clinical diagnosis. The limitations and prospects for the future development of MIP-based luminescent chemosensors will also be discussed.

Cancer continues to be responsible for the deaths of more than 9 million people worldwide each year. Current treatment options are diverse, but low success rates, particularly for those with late-stage cancers, continue to be a problem for clinicians and their patients. The effort by researchers globally to find alternative treatment options is ongoing. In the present study, we focused on innovations in inorganic anticancer therapies, specifically those with photoactive and luminescent properties. Transition metals offer distinct advantages compared to wholly organic compounds in both chemotherapeutics and luminescence properties. Here we report on the characteristics that result from discrete structural changes that have been expertly used to fine-tune their properties, and how diverse inherent luminescent properties have been widely employed to monitor cellular localization to photodynamic therapy.

Eu-doped Y2O3 coated diatomite nanostructures with variable Eu3+ contents were synthesized by a facile hydrothermal technique. The products were characterized by means of energy dispersive X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (EDX), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and photoluminescence spectroscopy techniques. As claimed by PXRD, the particles were crystallized excellently and attributed to the cubic phase of Y2O3. The influence of substitution of Eu3+ ions into Y2O3 lattice caused a redshift in the absorbance and a decrease in the bandgap of as-prepared coated compounds. The pore volume and BET specific surface area of Eu-doped Y2O3-coated diatomite is greater than uncoated biosilica. The sonophotocata-lytic activities of as-synthesized specimens were evaluated for the degradation of Reactive Blue 19. The effect of various specifications such as ultrasonic power, catalyst amount, and primary dye concentration was explored.

Fluorescent metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are ideal materials for sensors because of their adjustable pore size and functional groups, which provide them with favorable metal ion selective recognition. In this paper, a new cadmium-based MOF was synthesized using Cd(NO3)2·4H2O and 3,3′,5,5′-biphenyltetracarboxylic acid by solvothermal method. CdBPTC owned three types of channels with dimensions of approximately 8.4 × 8.3 Å, 6.0 × 5.2 Å, 9.7 × 8.4 Å along a, b, and c axis, respectively. This MOF has high selectivity to ferric ions and shows excellent anti-inference ability toward many other cations. The results indicate that the fluorescence quenching efficiency of CdBPTC is close to 100% when the concentration of Fe3+ reaches 1.0 × 10−3 mol·L−1. Moreover, the luminescent intensity at 427 nm presents a linear relationship at a concentration range of 2.0 × 10−4~7.0 × 10−4 mol·L−1, which can be quantitatively expressed by the linear Stern–Volmer equation I0/I = 8489 [Fe3+] − 0.1400, which is comparable to the previously reported better-performing materials. Competitive energy absorption and ion exchange may be responsible for the variation in fluorescence intensity of CdBPTC in different Fe3+ concentrations.

Bacteriophages (“phages”) infect and multiply within specific bacterial strains, causing lysis of their target. Due to the specific nature of these interactions, phages allow a high-precision approach for therapy which can also be exploited for the detection of phage-sensitive pathogens associated with chronic diseases due to gut microbiome imbalance. As rapid phage-mediated detection assays becoming standard-of-care diagnostic tools, they will advance the more widespread application of phage therapy in a precision approach. Using a conventional method and a new cloning approach to develop luminescent phages, we engineered two phages that specifically detect a disease-associated microbial strain. We performed phage sensitivity assays in liquid culture and in fecal matrices and tested the stability of spiked fecal samples stored under different conditions. Different reporter gene structures and genome insertion sites were required to successfully develop the two nluc-reporter phages. The reporter phages detected spiked bacteria in five fecal samples with high specificity. Fecal samples stored under different conditions for up to 30 days did not display major losses in reporter-phage-based detection. Luminescent phage-based diagnostics can provide a rapid co-diagnostic tool to guide the growing field of phage therapy, particularly for a precision-based approach to chronic diseases treatment.

Development of a vaccine to limit the impact of antibiotic resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae is now a global priority. Serum bactericidal antibody (SBA) is a possible indicator of protective immunity to N. gonorrhoeae, but conventional assays measure colony forming units (CFU), which is time-consuming. A luminescent assay that quantifies ATP as a surrogate measure of bacterial viability was tested on N. gonorrhoeae strains FA1090, MS11 and P9-17 and compared to CFU-based readouts. There was a linear relationship between CFU and ATP levels for all three strains (r > 0.9). Normal human serum (NHS) is a common source of complement for SBA assays, but needs to be screened for non-specific bactericidal activity. NHS from 10 individuals were used for serum sensitivity assays—sensitivity values were significantly reduced with the ATP method for FA1090 (5/10, p < 0.05) and MS11 (10/10, p < 0.05), whereas P9-17 data were comparable for all donors. Our results suggest that measuring ATP underestimates serum sensitivity of N. gonorrhoeae and that the CFU method is a better approach. However, mouse anti-P9-17 outer membrane vesicles (OMV) SBA titres to P9-17 were comparable with both methods (r = 0.97), suggesting this assay can be used to rapidly screen sera for bactericidal antibodies to gonococci.

The organic ligands (E)-8-hydroxyquinoline-2-carbaldehyde oxime (H2L1) and furan-2-ylmethanamine (H2L2) were used to react with Zn(NO3)2·6H2O at 140 °C solvothermal for two days to obtain the heptanuclear Zn(II) cluster [Zn7(L1)4(HL1)2(H2L2)(µ2-OH)(µ2-O)(NO3)] (1). The X-ray single crystal diffraction reveals that every five-coordinated Zn(II) ions are surrounded by two N atoms and three O atoms with the N2O3 coordination environment and four-coordinated Zn(II) ion surrounded by one N atom and three O atoms in the NO3 coordinated environment. The photoluminescence of cluster 1 is obvious. Moreover, in the presence of Ag(I) ions, cluster 1 exhibits an efficient recognition ability, and it realizes the recognition of toxic metal ions. Here, we have developed cluster-based sensing materials for the efficient detection of heavy metal ions Ag(I) strategies.

Luminescent carbon nanomaterials are important materials for sensing, imaging, and display technologies. This work describes the use of microwave heating for the template-assisted preparation of luminescent carbon nanofibers (CNFs) from the reaction of a range of beverage-related precursors with the nitrogen-rich polyethyleneimine. Highly luminescent robust carbon fibers that were 10 to 30 μm in length and had a diameter of 200 nm were obtained under moderate conditions of temperature (250–260 °C) and a short reaction time (6 min). The high aspect ratio fibers showed wavelength-dependent emission that can be readily imaged using epifluorescence. The development of these multi-emissive one-dimensional (1D) carbon nanomaterials offers potential for a range of applications.

Flexible 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl radical (TEMPO)-oxidized nanofibrillated cellulose (ONFC) films with long afterglow luminescence containing modified SrAl2O4: Eu2+, Dy3+ (SAOED) phosphors were fabricated by a template method. Tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and (3-aminopropyl) trimethoxy-silane (APTMS) were employed cooperatively to improve the water resistance and compatibility of the SAOED particles in the ONFC suspension. The structure and morphology after modification evidenced the formation of a superior SiO2 layer and coarse amino-compounds on the surface of the phosphors. Homogeneous dispersions containing ONFC and the modified phosphors were prepared and the interface of composite films containing the amino-modified particles showed a more closely packed structure and had less voids at the interface between the cellulose and luminescent particles than that of silica-modified phosphors. The emission spectra for luminescent films showed a slight blue shift (3.2 nm) at around 512 nm. Such flexible films with good luminescence, thermal resistance, and mechanical properties can find applications in fields like luminous flexible equipment, night indication, and portable logo or labels.

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs), luminescent π-conjugated anionic polymer and montmorillonite (MMT) were orderly assembled into luminescent multilayer films via layer-by-layer self-assembly method. The electronic microenvironment (EME), the structure of which is like a traditional capacitor, can be constructed by exfoliated LDHs or MMT nanosheets. In addition, the rigid inorganic laminated configuration can offer stable surroundings between the interlayers. As a result, we conclude that EME can extend the luminescent lifespans of multilayer films substantially, due to affecting relaxation times of π-conjugated anionic polymer. Consequently, because of the remarkable impact on better photoemission behaviors of luminescent π-conjugated anionic polymer, EME assembled by LDHs or MMT nanosheets have had high hopes attached to them. They are expected to have the potential for designing, constructing, and investigating novel light-emitting thin films.
