The increasing consumption of chia seeds is followed by a growing interest in their nutritional and toxicological characterization. To assess the characterization of the essential and PTEs of this novel food, 20 samples of conventional and organic chia seeds available on the European market were analyzed using ICP-OES. Then, the dietary exposure to these elements was assessed. An exhaustive investigation into the metal content of this food serves to elucidate the paucity of existing knowledge. The results show that the levels of essential elements are similar in both types of production, while the levels of PTEs are higher in the organic samples. The exposure assessment indicates that Mn contributes the most among the essential elements, followed by Cu in women. Exposure to PTEs through doses of 50 g/day of chia seeds analyzed would hardly pose short-term health risks as the contributions are below 10%, except for Sr, although they could produce a long-term toxicological risk. To promote safety in chia seed consumption, it is recommended to encourage responsible and moderate consumption, continue monitoring PTE levels in this novel food, and establish concentration limits for PTEs in future European regulations.

Multipolarized nanoantennae are promising for terahertz applications due to their ability to support multiple resonance and polarization sensitivity. This study investigates the behavior of multipolarized gold nanoantennae placed on a Si-SiO2 substrate and compares their performance with antennae in air. The results show that the resonance frequency shifts from 27 THz in the air to 26 THz on the SiSiO2 substrate. SEM and FTIR analysis confirmed the antenna dimensions and optical response, with experimental reflectance spectra revealing resonance at 21 THz and 26 THz. The multi-polarized antenna demonstrated stable performance across different polarization angles compared to traditional dipole antennae, making it suitable for various terahertz applications. These findings provide insights into optimizing nanoantenna design for advanced sensors and communication systems.

This work proposes a high-efficiency High-Brightness LED (HB-LED) driver for Visible Light Communication (VLC) based on a Two-Input Buck (TIBuck) DC/DC converter. This solution not only outperforms previous approaches based on Buck DC/DC converters, but also simplifies previous proposals for VLC drivers that use the split power technique with two DC/DC converters: one is in charge of the communication tasks and the other controls the biasing of the HB-LED (i.e., lighting tasks). The real implementation of this scheme requires either two input voltage sources, one of which is isolated, or one DC/DC converter with galvanic isolation. The proposed implementation of splitting the power is based on a TIBuck DC/DC converter that avoids the isolation requirement, overcoming the major drawback of this technique, keeping high-efficiency and high communication capability thanks to the lower voltage stress both across the switches and at the switching node. This fact allows for the operation at very high frequency for communication purposes, minimizing switching power losses, achieving high efficiency and providing lower filtering effort. Moreover, the duty ratio range can also be adapted to the useful voltage range of the HB-LED load to maximize the resolution on the tracking of the output volage. The power is split by means of an auxiliary Buck DC/DC converter operating at low switching frequency, which generates the secondary voltage source needed by the TIBuck DC/DC converter. This defines a natural split of power by only processing the power delivered for communications purposes at high frequency. A 7 W output-power experimental prototype of the proposed VLC driver was built and tested. Based on the experimental results, the prototype achieved 94% efficiency, reproducing a 64-QAM digital modulation scheme and achieving a bit rate of 1.5 Mbps with error in communication of 12%.

The obtention of luminescent SiOxCy:H thin films deposited by the HW-CVD technique is reported here. We study the effect of different monomethyl-silane (MMS) flow rates on the films properties. An increase in the emission bandwidth and a red-shift was observed when the MMS flow increased. The luminescence was related to optical transitions in band tail states and with less contribution from quantum confinement effects. After, the films were annealed at 750 °C in nitrogen. The annealed film deposited at the highest MMS flow showed an emission spectrum like the as-deposited film, suggesting the same emission mechanisms. By contrast, the annealed film deposited at the lowest MMS flow showed two emission bands. These bands are due to the activation of radiative defects related to oxygen-deficient centers. MOS-like structures were fabricated as electroluminescent devices using the annealed films. Only the structure of the film with the highest carbon content showed light emission in a broad band in the visible spectrum region in forward bias, with a maximum centered close to 850 nm. The light emission mechanism was related to electron thermalization in the band tail states and a direct hole injection into deep states. The trap-assisted tunneling, Poole–Frenkel emissions and Fowler–Nordheim tunneling were proposed as the charge transport mechanism.

Epoxy resin composite matrices reinforced with carbon fibers are highly demanded by certain industries such as the aeronautics industry because of their exceptional mechanical properties. Unfortunately, the use of reinforcing carbon fibers makes these composite materials hard to recycle by conventional methods. Therefore, in this study, specific hydrothermal treatments have been employed to recover carbon fibers from the offcuts of composite parts from the aeronautics industry. The resin decomposition rates (DRs) achieved by different settings of the operating parameters, such as the use of alkaline catalysts (KOH, NaOH, or K2CO3), the application of mechanical stirring, the use of different reaction times, the solvent volume/composite mass ratio, the specific surface area (surface area/mass) of the composite pieces, and the operating temperature and pressure (subcritical or supercritical conditions), have been examined and assessed. Under the conditions that have been evaluated, resin decomposition rates nearly as high as 98% have been achieved, while the recycled fibers retained over 95% of their original tensile strength (TS).

This article introduces a novel two-step fifth-order Jacobian-free iterative method aimed at efficiently solving systems of nonlinear equations. The method leverages the benefits of Jacobian-free approaches, utilizing divided differences to circumvent the computationally intensive calculation of Jacobian matrices. This adaptation significantly reduces computational overhead and simplifies the implementation process while maintaining high convergence rates. We demonstrate that this method achieves fifth-order convergence under specific parameter settings, with broad applicability across various types of nonlinear systems. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated through a series of numerical experiments that confirm its superior performance in terms of accuracy and computational efficiency compared to existing methods.

This paper offers a systematic review of the papers in the present century that have addressed the intersection between urbanism, universal accessibility, and the socio-educational sphere. The paper explores, describes, and interprets the published literature found in academic sources included in Scopus and Web of Science (WOS) from the year 2000 to the present about the intersection of these three topics. We start from the dialogue between the social and the educational spheres as a basic premise. Thus, the main objectives of this review are (1) to identify how many articles explicitly address the social dimension in relation to education and universal accessibility; (2) to determine if there is an upward or downward trend in socio-educational perspectives, inclusion, and new urbanism; and (3) to find out if the research provides frameworks for universal accessibility, urban planning, and socio-educational inclusion from this holistic perspective. After removing all exclusion criteria, the study was restricted to 29 papers. The small number of research found is noteworthy. We understand that this shortage is due to the inclusion of the social dimension as a required area. Although there seems to have been a slight increase in recent years, the sample found does not allow us to determine whether or not there is a greater interest in studying the social sphere in relation to inclusive education. We do conclude, however, that this gap highlights the need to make the socio-educational dimension more present.

Coffee is part of our daily lives since it is a drink with a symbolic value, both in our social relationships and as a stimulating drink. The main objective of this paper is to conduct a risk characterization of fluoride overexposure from the consumption of these beverages; for this purpose, in the present study, the fluoride concentration was determined in 80 samples of different brands of coffee commonly consumed in the Canary Islands, and the risk derived from their intake was then evaluated. Significant differences (p < 0.05) were found between the coffee brands soluble Nescafé Classic®, Saimaza®, Auchan®, Tirma® soft blend, and Hacendado® and the other analyzed brands. The brand that recorded the highest mean fluoride levels is “Hacendado descafeinado®” (0.308 mg/L). The problem with coffee is not the fluoride it contains but the fact that, according to the survey results, most coffee drinkers brew their coffee with tap water (over 51% of respondents use tap water). The results of the fluoride content in coffee prepared with tap water from the different areas of Tenerife in the Canary Islands (metropolitan, northern, and southern areas) have reported higher concentrations of fluoride: north (max. concentration found of 16.68 mg/L), south (max. concentration found of 8.47 mg/L) and metropolitan (max. concentration found of 4.73 mg/L). Coffee has not been identified as a risk of dietary overexposure to fluoride; however, the use of tap water for its brewing has been identified as a factor that considerably increases its concentration. Therefore, the use of bottled water is recommended, especially in regions such as the Canary Islands, which have high concentrations of fluoride in their water.

In this work, interval type-2 and type-3 fuzzy systems were designed, of Mamdani and Sugeno types, for time series prediction. The aggregation performed by the type-2 and type-3 fuzzy systems was carried out by using the results of an optimized ensemble neural network (ENN) obtained with the particle swarm optimization algorithm. The time series data that were used were of the Mexican stock exchange. The method finds the best prediction error. This method consists of the aggregation of the responses of the ENN with type-2 and type-3 fuzzy systems. In this case, the systems consist of five inputs and one output. Each input is made up of two membership functions and there are 32 possible fuzzy if-then rules. The simulation results show that the approach with type-2 and type-3 fuzzy systems provides a good prediction of the Mexican stock exchange. Statistical tests of the comparison of type-1, type-2, and type-3 fuzzy systems are also presented.

In this manuscript, we introduce a novel parametric family of multistep iterative methods designed to solve nonlinear equations. This family is derived from a damped Newton’s scheme but includes an additional Newton step with a weight function and a “frozen” derivative, that is, the same derivative than in the previous step. Initially, we develop a quad-parametric class with a first-order convergence rate. Subsequently, by restricting one of its parameters, we accelerate the convergence to achieve a third-order uni-parametric family. We thoroughly investigate the convergence properties of this final class of iterative methods, assess its stability through dynamical tools, and evaluate its performance on a set of test problems. We conclude that there exists one optimal fourth-order member of this class, in the sense of Kung–Traub’s conjecture. Our analysis includes stability surfaces and dynamical planes, revealing the intricate nature of this family. Notably, our exploration of stability surfaces enables the identification of specific family members suitable for scalar functions with a challenging convergence behavior, as they may exhibit periodical orbits and fixed points with attracting behavior in their corresponding dynamical planes. Furthermore, our dynamical study finds members of the family of iterative methods with exceptional stability. This property allows us to converge to the solution of practical problem-solving applications even from initial estimations very far from the solution. We confirm our findings with various numerical tests, demonstrating the efficiency and reliability of the presented family of iterative methods.

This study deals with a stochastic reaction–diffusion biofilm model under quorum sensing. Quorum sensing is a process of communication between cells that permits bacterial communication about cell density and alterations in gene expression. This model produces two results: the bacterial concentration, which over time demonstrates the development and decomposition of the biofilm, and the biofilm bacteria collaboration, which demonstrates the potency of resistance and defense against environmental stimuli. In this study, we investigate numerical solutions and exact solitary wave solutions with the presence of randomness. The finite difference scheme is proposed for the sake of numerical solutions while the generalized Riccati equation mapping method is applied to construct exact solitary wave solutions. The numerical scheme is analyzed by checking consistency and stability. The consistency of the scheme is gained under the mean square sense while the stability condition is gained by the help of the Von Neumann criteria. Exact stochastic solitary wave solutions are constructed in the form of hyperbolic, trigonometric, and rational forms. Some solutions are plots in 3D and 2D form to show dark, bright and solitary wave solutions and the effects of noise as well. Mainly, the numerical results are compared with the exact solitary wave solutions with the help of unique physical problems. The comparison plots are dispatched in three dimensions and line representations as well as by selecting different values of parameters.

In this paper, we present a three-step sixth-order class of iterative schemes to estimate the solutions of a nonlinear system of equations. This procedure is designed by means of a weight function technique. We apply this procedure for predicting the shear strength of a reinforced concrete beam. The values for the parameters of the nonlinear system describing this problem were randomly selected inside the prescribed ranges by technical standards for structural concrete. Moreover, some of these parameters were fixed taking into consideration the solvability region of the adopted steel constitutive model. The effectiveness of the new class is also compared with other current schemes in terms of the computational efficiency and numerical performance, with very good results. The advantages of this new class come from the low computational cost, due to the existence of an only inverse operator.

Power flow problems can be solved in a variety of ways by using the Newton–Raphson approach. The nonlinear power flow equations depend upon voltages Vi and phase angle δ. An electrical power system is obtained by taking the partial derivatives of load flow equations which contain active and reactive powers. In this paper, we present an efficient seventh-order iterative scheme to obtain the solutions of nonlinear system of equations, with only three steps in its formulation. Then, we illustrate the computational cost for different operations such as matrix–matrix multiplication, matrix–vector multiplication, and LU-decomposition, which is then used to calculate the cost of our proposed method and is compared with the cost of already seventh-order methods. Furthermore, we elucidate the applicability of our newly developed scheme in an electrical power system. The two-bus, three-bus, and four-bus power flow problems are then solved by using load flow equations that describe the applicability of the new schemes.

In this paper, a new parametric class of optimal fourth-order iterative methods to estimate the solutions of nonlinear equations is presented. After the convergence analysis, a study of the stability of this class is made using the tools of complex discrete dynamics, allowing those elements of the class with lower dependence on initial estimations to be selected in order to find a very stable subfamily. Numerical tests indicate that the stable members perform better on quadratic polynomials than the unstable ones when applied to other non-polynomial functions. Moreover, the performance of the best elements of the family are compared with known methods, showing robust and stable behaviour.

Little is known about the interactions between the variables involved in the post-fire response of Mediterranean pine species to prescribed burning (PB). Thus, it is essential to develop an empirical model in order to assess the influence of tree and stand attributes, burn season, and fire severity on the probability of stem cambium damage occurring. Prescribed burnings were conducted in different seasons and areas covering a wide climatic and ecological range. Potential explanatory variables were measured. A random effects hurdle model framework was used to evaluate the temperature duration above 60 °C as a proxy for stem cambium damage at tree scale. The results showed significant differences in cambium damage between the PB seasons. Pinus nigra was more resistant than other pine species. Bark thickness was critical for protecting cambium. Volume of crown scorch, percentage of stem scorch, and maximum outer bark temperature were directly related to temperature duration above 60 °C in the cambium. Prescribed burning conducted under tree canopy in Mediterranean pine species generally results in a low level of cambium damage. Empirical models could help managers to predict the effects of PB and thus select the most suitable prescriptions.

Although temperature, relative humidity, and farm-associated factors are known to affect broiler live performance, data about the impact of these variables under commercial operations are still scarce. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of temperature, relative humidity, a thermal humidity index, management, and farm-associated factors on BW, BW gain, feed conversion ratio (FCR), and mortality of broilers raised to 35 d under commercial tropical conditions. The data analyzed included performance records of Ross 308 AP broiler flocks placed between 2018 and 2020. Environmental monitoring information was obtained from electronic sensors that captured data hourly from 80 flocks in 29 farms. Farm-associated factors were gathered using a survey of 86 farms. Three data analyses were conducted in parallel. Correlation analyses, one-way ANOVA, and machine learning techniques were employed. Results indicated that BW and BW gain were reduced, and FCR worsened (p < 0.001) up to 21 d when chickens were mainly exposed to temperatures 2.5 °C lower than the recommended optimums for each age period. At the same time, mortality at 28 and 35 d increased. In conclusion, all farm-associated factors affected chicken live performance. Variable importance analysis indicated that performance results at 14 and 21 d were significant to predict BW at 35. At the same time, sex, distance between the hatchery and farm, and farm altitude accounted for the most significant contributions from the farm-associated factors.

This work aimed to study the effect of three drying methods, namely sun-drying (SD) (T = 32 °C), continuous convective drying (CCD) (T = 35 ± 2 °C) and interval starting accessibility Drying (ISAD) (T = 35 ± 2 °C) with an active time of 30 s (ton) and a tempering time of 60 s (toff), on selected quality characteristics of a traditional dry-salted meat product known as “kaddid”. The analyses of chemical composition, lipid oxidation and fatty acid profile of kaddid were carried out before and after 45 days of storage (t = 0 vs. t = 45) at ambient temperature. Chemical composition and lipid oxidation (TBARS) of kaddid were affected by the drying methods. The CCD samples showed the lowest level of lipid oxidation. Protein content was better preserved via the ISAD method (7.27 g/kg DM). The fatty acid profile revealed the lowest mono-unsaturated fatty acid content in the ISAD samples; however, no significant difference was observed between the drying processes for the total poly-unsaturated fatty acid content. The storage period led to a significant decrease in the SFA values of CCD and ISAD samples against an increase in the MUFA ones. ISAD appeared to be a promising drying mode with a lower effective drying time and a good product quality preservation.

The present investigation analyzes the transient multilayer electro-osmotic flow through an annular microchannel with hydrophobic walls. The fluids are considered immiscible and viscoelastic, following the Maxwell rheological model. In the problem examined, the linearized Poisson–Boltzmann and Cauchy momentum equations are used to determine the electric potential distribution and the flow field, respectively. Here, different interfacial phenomena are studied through the imposed boundary conditions, such as the hydrodynamic slip and specified zeta potentials at solid–liquid interfaces, the velocity continuity, the electroviscous stresses balance, the potential difference, and the continuity of electrical displacements at the interfaces between fluids. The semi-analytic solution uses the Laplace transform theory. In the results, the velocity profiles and velocity tracking show the oscillatory behavior of flow, which strongly depends on the dimensionless relaxation time. Furthermore, the hydrodynamic slip on the channel walls contributes to the release of energy stored in the fluids due to elastic effects at the start-up of the flow. Similarly, other dimensionless parameters are also investigated. This research aims to predict the parallel flow behavior in microfluidic devices under electro-osmotic effects.

In this paper, we present an innovative technique that improves the convergence order of iterative schemes that do not require the evaluation of Jacobian matrices. As far as we know, this is the first technique that allows us the achievement of an increase, from p to p+3 units, in the order of convergence. This is constructed from any Jacobian-free scheme of order p. We conduct comprehensive numerical tests first in academical examples to validate the theoretical results, showing the efficiency and effectiveness of the new Jacobian-free schemes. Then, we apply them on the non-differentiable partial differential equations that models the nutrient diffusion in a biological substrate.

European regions with a lower population density have greater structural difficulties in ensuring that the daily life of their inhabitants matches that of more populated regions. This problem persists in groups of people who present some type of disability. Soria (Spain) is one of such regions. It is considered the most depopulated region of Southern Europe. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyse the reality of people with disabilities in one of the provinces with a lower population density. It also seeks to explore the relationship between the perceptions and the reality of the existing structure to infer the promotions or limitations of agency. To this end, we conducted a systematic review of the existing literature, a sociogeographic study of the study context, and a mixed investigation. The results show that the greatest problem lies in the cities and towns located far away from the capital city, causing budget cutbacks and, therefore, reducing the attention to the needs of people with disabilities. However, social solidarity has increased, which is perceived as greater social inclusion for this group.

Aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases (aaRSs) originated from an ancestral bidirectional gene (mirror symmetry), and through the evolution of the genetic code, the twenty aaRSs exhibit a symmetrical distribution in a 6-dimensional hypercube of the Standard Genetic Code. In this work, we assume a primeval RNY code and the Extended Genetic RNA code type II, which includes codons of the types YNY, YNR, and RNR. Each of the four subsets of codons can be represented in a 4-dimensional hypercube. Altogether, these 4 subcodes constitute the 6-dimensional representation of the SGC. We identify the aaRSs symmetry groups in each of these hypercubes. We show that each of the four hypercubes contains the following sets of symmetries for the two known Classes of synthetases: RNY: dihedral group of order 4; YNY: binary group; YNR: amplified octahedral group; and RNR: binary group. We demonstrate that for each hypercube, the group of symmetries in Class 1 is the same as the group of symmetries in Class 2. The biological implications of these findings are discussed.

Despite early control measures, SARS-CoV-2 reached all regions of Peru during the first wave of the pandemic, including native communities of the Peruvian Amazon. Here, we aimed to describe the epidemiological situation of COVID-19 in the Amazonas region of Peru using an open database of 11,124 COVID-19 cases reported from 19 March to 29 July 2020, including 3278 cases from native communities. A high-incidence area in northern Amazonas (Condorcanqui) reported a cumulative incidence of 63.84/1000 inhabitants with a much lower death rate (0.95%) than the national average. Our results showed at least eight significant factors for mortality, and the Native Amazonian ethnicity as a protective factor. Molecular confirmatory tests are necessary to better explain the high incidence of antibody response reported in these communities.

Some iterative schemes with memory were designed for approximating the inverse of a nonsingular square complex matrix and the Moore–Penrose inverse of a singular square matrix or an arbitrary m×n complex matrix. A Kurchatov-type scheme and Steffensen’s method with memory were developed for estimating these types of inverses, improving, in the second case, the order of convergence of the Newton–Schulz scheme. The convergence and its order were studied in the four cases, and their stability was checked as discrete dynamical systems. With large matrices, some numerical examples are presented to confirm the theoretical results and to compare the results obtained with the proposed methods with those provided by other known ones.

Data collection is standard in commercial broiler production; however, growth modeling is still a challenge since this data often lacks an inflection point. This study evaluated body weight (BW) dynamics, feed intake, BW gain, feed conversion ratio (FCR), and mortality of broiler flocks reared under commercial tropical conditions with controlled feeding to optimize FCR. The data analyzed included performance records of 1347 male and 1353 female Ross 308 AP broiler flocks with a total of 95.4 million chickens housed from 2018 to 2020. Decision trees determined high- and low-feed-efficiency groups using FCR at 35 d. Logistic, Gompertz–Laird, and von Bertalanffy growth models were fitted with weekly BW data for each flock within performance groups. The logistic model indicated more accurate estimates with biological meaning. The high-efficiency males and females (p < 0.001) were offered less feed than the low-efficiency group and were consistently more efficient. In conclusion, greater feeding control between the second and the fourth week of age, followed by higher feed allowance during the last week, was associated with better feed efficiency at 35 d in males and females. Additionally, models demonstrated that a reduced growth rate resulted in heavier chickens at 35 d with better feed efficiency and greater BW gain.

In this paper, an iterative procedure to find the solution of a nonlinear constitutive model for embedded steel reinforcement is introduced. The model presents different multiplicities, where parameters are randomly selected within a solvability region. To achieve this, a class of multipoint fixed-point iterative schemes for single roots is modified to find multiple roots, achieving the fourth order of convergence. Complex discrete dynamics techniques are employed to select the members with the most stable performance. The mechanical problem referred to earlier, as well as some academic problems involving multiple roots, are solved numerically to verify the theoretical analysis, robustness, and applicability of the proposed scheme.

In this manuscript, we use approximations of conformable derivatives for designing iterative methods to solve nonlinear algebraic or trascendental equations. We adapt the approximation of conformable derivatives in order to design conformable derivative-free iterative schemes to solve nonlinear equations: Steffensen and Secant-type methods. To our knowledge, these are the first conformable derivative-free schemes in the literature, where the Steffensen conformable method is also optimal; moreover, the Secant conformable scheme is also a procedure with memory. A convergence analysis is made, preserving the order of classical cases, and the numerical performance is studied in order to confirm the theoretical results. It is shown that these methods can present some numerical advantages versus their classical partners, with wide sets of converging initial estimations.

In recent years, some Newton-type schemes with noninteger derivatives have been proposed for solving nonlinear transcendental equations by using fractional derivatives (Caputo and Riemann–Liouville) and conformable derivatives. It has also been shown that the methods with conformable derivatives improve the performance of classical schemes. In this manuscript, we design point-to-point higher-order conformable Newton-type and multipoint procedures for solving nonlinear equations and propose a general technique to deduce the conformable version of any classical iterative method with integer derivatives. A convergence analysis is given and the expected orders of convergence are obtained. As far as we know, these are the first optimal conformable schemes, beyond the conformable Newton procedure, that have been developed. The numerical results support the theory and show that the new schemes improve the performance of the original methods in some aspects. Additionally, the dependence on initial guesses is analyzed, and these schemes show good stability properties.

In this paper, we generalize the scheme proposed by Ermakov and Kalitkin and present a class of two-parameter fourth-order optimal methods, which we call Ermakov’s Hyperfamily. It is a substantial improvement of the classical Newton’s method because it optimizes one that extends the regions of convergence and is very stable. Another novelty is that it is a class containing as particular cases some classical methods, such as King’s family. From this class, we generate a new uniparametric family, which we call the KLAM, containing the classical Ostrowski and Chun, whose efficiency, stability, and optimality has been proven but also new methods that in many cases outperform these mentioned, as we prove. We demonstrate that it is of a fourth order of convergence, as well as being computationally efficienct. A dynamical study is performed allowing us to choose methods with good stability properties and to avoid chaotic behavior, implicit in the fractal structure defined by the Julia set in the related dynamic planes. Some numerical tests are presented to confirm the theoretical results and to compare the proposed methods with other known methods.

This paper presents a review of concepts related to wildfire risk assessment, including the determination of fire ignition and propagation (fire danger), the extent to which fire may spatially overlap with valued assets (exposure), and the potential losses and resilience to those losses (vulnerability). This is followed by a brief discussion of how these concepts can be integrated and connected to mitigation and adaptation efforts. We then review operational fire risk systems in place in various parts of the world. Finally, we propose an integrated fire risk system being developed under the FirEUrisk European project, as an example of how the different risk components (including danger, exposure and vulnerability) can be generated and combined into synthetic risk indices to provide a more comprehensive wildfire risk assessment, but also to consider where and on what variables reduction efforts should be stressed and to envisage policies to be better adapted to future fire regimes. Climate and socio-economic changes entail that wildfires are becoming even more a critical environmental hazard; extreme fires are observed in many areas of the world that regularly experience fire, yet fire activity is also increasing in areas where wildfires were previously rare. To mitigate the negative impacts of fire, those responsible for managing risk must leverage the information available through the risk assessment process, along with an improved understanding on how the various components of risk can be targeted to improve and optimize the many strategies for mitigation and adaptation to an increasing fire risk.

Systematic measurement of pasture biomass (kg DM/ha) is crucial for optimising pasture utilisation and increasing dairy farm profitability. On-farm pasture monitoring can be conducted using various sensors, but calibrations are necessary to convert the measured variable into pasture biomass. In this study, we conducted three experiments in New South Wales (Australia) to evaluate the use of the rising plate meter (RPM), pasture reader (PR), unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) and satellites as pasture monitoring tools. We tested various calibration methods that can improve the accuracy of the estimations and be implemented more easily on-farm. The results indicate that UAV and satellite-derived reflectance indices (e.g., Normalised Difference Vegetation Index) can be indirectly calibrated with height measurements obtained from an RPM or PR. Height measurements can be then converted into pasture biomass ideally by conducting site-specific sporadic calibrations cuts. For satellites, using the average of the entire paddock, root mean square error (RMSE) = 226 kg DM/ha for kikuyu (Pennisetum clandestinum Hochst. ex Chiov) and 347 kg DM/ha for ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum L.) is as effective as but easier than matching NDVI pixels with height measurement using a Global Navigation Satellite System (RMSE = 227 kg DM/ha for kikuyu and 406 kg DM/ha for ryegrass). For situations where no satellite images are available for the same date, the average of all images available within a range of up to four days from the day ground measurements were taken could be used (RMSE = 225 kg DM/ha for kikuyu and 402 kg DM/ha for ryegrass). These methodologies aim to develop more practical and easier-to-implement calibrations to improve the accuracy of the predictive models in commercial farms. However, more research is still needed to test these hypotheses under extended periods, locations, and pasture species.

In this paper, we present a new third-order family of iterative methods in order to compute the multiple roots of nonlinear equations when the multiplicity (m≥1) is known in advance. There is a plethora of third-order point-to-point methods, available in the literature; but our methods are based on geometric derivation and converge to the required zero even though derivative becomes zero or close to zero in vicinity of the required zero. We use the exponential fitted curve and tangency conditions for the development of our schemes. Well-known Chebyshev, Halley, super-Halley and Chebyshev–Halley are the special members of our schemes for m=1. Complex dynamics techniques allows us to see the relation between the element of the family of iterative schemes and the wideness of the basins of attraction of the simple and multiple roots, on quadratic polynomials. Several applied problems are considered in order to demonstrate the performance of our methods and for comparison with the existing ones. Based on the numerical outcomes, we deduce that our methods illustrate better performance over the earlier methods even though in the case of multiple roots of high multiplicity.

In this manuscript, we carry out a study on the generalization of a known family of multipoint scalar iterative processes for approximating the solutions of nonlinear systems. The convergence analysis of the proposed class under various smooth conditions is provided. We also study the stability of this family, analyzing the fixed and critical points of the rational operator resulting from applying the family on low-degree polynomials, as well as the basins of attraction and the orbits (periodic or not) that these points produce. This dynamical study also allows us to observe which members of the family are more stable and which have chaotic behavior. Graphical analyses of dynamical planes, parameter line and bifurcation planes are also studied. Numerical tests are performed on different nonlinear systems for checking the theoretical results and to compare the proposed schemes with other known ones.

This manuscript is focused on a new parametric class of multi-step iterative procedures to find the solutions of systems of nonlinear equations. Starting from Ostrowski’s scheme, the class is constructed by adding a Newton step with a Jacobian matrix taken from the previous step and employing a divided difference operator, resulting in a triparametric scheme with a convergence order of four. The convergence order of the family can be accelerated to six by setting two parameters, resulting in a uniparametric family. We performed dynamic and numerical development to analyze the stability of the sixth-order family. Previous studies for scalar functions allow us to isolate those elements of the family with stable performance for solving practical problems. In this regard, we present dynamical planes showing the complexity of the family. In addition, the numerical properties of the class are analyzed with several test problems.

The present review deals with water applications in sub and supercritical conditions with a focus on supercritical water oxidation process (SCWO) as an example of high temperature and pressure technologies. It starts by presenting the advantages of water properties near and beyond the critical point and the major applications exploiting them. Then, it presents a review on SCWO from the description of the process, the reaction mechanism and kinetics to reactor design and modeling. It also presents the main problems and difficulties that delay the SCWO industrial application, and summarizes the main efforts and research to overcome them for a safe, efficient and economic process.

The systemic immune-inflammation index (SIII) is a marker studied in multiple types of urologic cancer. This systematic review evaluates the association between SIII values with overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) in testicular cancer. We searched observational studies in five databases. The quantitative synthesis was performed using a random-effects model. The risk of bias was assessed using the Newcastle–Ottawa Scale (NOS). The only measure of the effect was the hazard ratio (HR). A sensitivity analysis was performed according to the risk of bias in the studies. There were 833 participants in a total of 6 cohorts. We found that high SIII values were associated with worse OS (HR = 3.28; 95% CI 1.3–8.9; p < 0.001; I2 = 78) and PFS (HR = 3.9; 95% CI 2.53–6.02; p < 0.001; I2 = 0). No indication of small study effects was found in the association between SIII values and OS (p = 0.5301). High SIII values were associated with worse OS and PFS. However, further primary studies are suggested to enhance the effect of this marker in different outcomes of testicular cancer patients.

Background: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) are commonly associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) and in these patients Mg concentration is usually decreased. This study evaluated whether a dietary Mg supplementation might attenuate vascular dysfunction through the modulation of oxidative stress and inflammation in concurrent MetS and CKD. Methods: A rat model of MetS (Zucker strain) with CKD (5/6 nephrectomy, Nx) was used. Nephrectomized animals were fed a normal 0.1%Mg (MetS+Nx+Mg0.1%) or a supplemented 0.6%Mg (MetS+Nx+Mg0.6%) diet; Sham-operated rats with MetS receiving 0.1%Mg were used as controls. Results: As compared to controls, the MetS+Nx-Mg0.1% group showed a significant increase in oxidative stress and inflammation biomarkers (lipid peroxidation and aortic interleukin-1b and -6 expression) and Endothelin-1 levels, a decrease in nitric oxide and a worsening in uremia and MetS associated pathology as hypertension, and abnormal glucose and lipid profile. Moreover, proteomic evaluation revealed changes mainly related to lipid metabolism and CVD markers. By contrast, in the MetS+Nx+Mg0.6% group, these parameters remained largely similar to controls. Conclusion: In concurrent MetS and CKD, dietary Mg supplementation reduced inflammation and oxidative stress and improved vascular function.

Chemical Engineering courses are often designed to be divided into two types of lessons: lecture and experimental. In the second one, students develop the knowledge in a hands-on way by attending a pilot plant equipped with different instruments. Hence, a thorough understanding of the different unit operations is needed and, therefore, the implications of changing the operational variables in a process. In this context, the use of new digital technologies is emerging as support tools with the aim of both improving the learning and the motivation of students. Specifically, Augmented Reality (AR) provides a modified physical environment overlaid with multimedia content in the form of text, graphics, video and/or audio. Thus, the incorporation of AR systems in the learning of science has proven to be useful, because it can present multiple benefits for students and teachers related to the improvement of spatial abilities, the increase of memory retention, the decrease of cognitive overload, and a boost in student motivation. This study has carried out a search for resources, projects, software, and applications to implement AR-based tools in the experimental sessions of a Chemical Engineering educational pilot plant. Based on all the information found, several AR projects were proposed by the teachers. Later, some of them were selected according to previously defined criteria and implemented as educational tools for students in the course called Experimentation in Chemical Engineering I. Finally, this tool was evaluated through subsequent post-surveys, being very positively rated by both students and teachers, mainly in the items related to helping to understand concepts or the operating procedures of the equipment.

Lymphocyte-to-Monocyte ratio (LMR) has shown an association with survival outcomes in several oncological diseases. This study aimed to evaluate the association between LMR and clinical outcomes for cholangiocarcinoma patients. A systematic review and meta-analysis were performed to assess the association between LMR values and overall survival (OS), disease-free survival (DFS), recurrence-free survival (RFS) and time to recurrence (TTR) in cholangiocarcinoma patients. We used Hazard ratio (HR) and their 95% confidence interval (CI) as a measure of effect for the random effect model meta-analysis. The Newcastle–Ottawa Scale was used for quality assessment. The Egger test and funnel plot were developed for approaching publication bias. A total of 19 studies were included in this study (n = 3860). The meta-analysis showed that cholangiocarcinoma patients with low values of LMR were associated with worse OS (HR: 0.82; 95% CI: 0.71–0.96; I2 = 86%) and worse TTR (HR: 0.71; 95% CI: 0.58–0.86; I2 = 0%). DFS and RFS also were evaluated; however, they did not show statistically significant associations. Low LMR values were associated with a worse OS and TTR.

Background: Obesity is characterized by adipose tissue dysregulation and predisposes individuals to insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. At the molecular level, adipocyte dysfunction has been linked to obesity-triggered oxidative stress and protein carbonylation, considering protein carbonylation as a link between oxidative stress and metabolic dysfunction. The identification of specific carbonylated proteins in adipose tissue could provide novel biomarkers of oxidative damage related to metabolic status (i.e prediabetes). Thus, we aimed at characterizing the subcutaneous and omental human adipose tissue carbonylome in obesity-associated insulin resistance. Methods: 2D-PAGE was used to identify carbonylated proteins, and clinical correlations studies and molecular biology approaches including intracellular trafficking, reactive oxygen species assay, and iron content were performed using in vitro models of insulin resistance. Results: The carbonylome of human adipose tissue included common (serotransferrin, vimentin, actin, and annexin A2) and depot-specific (carbonic anhydrase and α-crystallin B in the subcutaneous depot; and α-1-antitrypsin and tubulin in the omental depot) differences that point out the complexity of oxidative stress at the metabolic level, highlighting changes in carbonylated transferrin expression. Posterior studies using in vitro prediabetic model evidence alteration in transferrin receptor translocation, linked to the prediabetic environment. Finally, ligand-receptor molecular docking studies showed a reduced affinity for carbonylated transferrin binding to its receptor compared to wild-type transferrin, emphasizing the role of transferrin carbonylation in the link between oxidative stress and metabolic dysfunction. Conclusions: The adipose tissue carbonylome contributes to understanding the molecular mechanism driving adipocyte dysfunction and identifies possible adipose tissue carbonylated targets in obesity-associated insulin resistance.

In developing distribution networks, the deployment of alternative generation sources is heavily motivated by the growing energy demand, as by environmental and political motives. Consequently, microgrids are implemented to coordinate the operation of these energy generation assets. Microgrids are systems that rely on power conversion technologies based on high-frequency switching devices to generate a stable distribution network. However, disrupting scenarios can occur in deployed systems, causing faults at the sub-component and the system level of microgrids where its identification is an economical and technological challenge. This paradigm can be addressed by having a digital twin of the low-level components to monitor and analyze their response and identify faults to take preventive or corrective actions. Nonetheless, accurate execution of digital twins of low-level components in traditional simulation systems is a difficult task to achieve due to the fast dynamics of the power converter devices, leading to inaccurate results and false identification of system faults. Therefore, this work proposes a fault identification framework for low-level components that includes the combination of Real-Time systems with the Digital Twin concept to guarantee the dynamic consistency of the low-level components. The proposed framework includes an offline trained Self Organized Map Neural Network in a hexagonal topology to identify such faults within a Real-Time system. As a case study, the proposed framework is applied to a three-phase two-level inverter connected to its digital model in a Real-Time simulator for open circuit faults identification.

In this manuscript, we propose a parametric family of iterative methods of fourth-order convergence, and the stability of the class is studied through the use of tools of complex dynamics. We obtain the fixed and critical points of the rational operator associated with the family. A stability analysis of the fixed points allows us to find sets of values of the parameter for which the behavior of the corresponding method is stable or unstable; therefore, we can select the regions of the parameter in which the methods behave more efficiently when they are applied for solving nonlinear equations or the regions in which the schemes have chaotic behavior.

Research interest in iterative multipoint schemes to solve nonlinear problems has increased recently because of the drawbacks of point-to-point methods, which need high-order derivatives to increase the order of convergence. However, this order is not the only key element to classify the iterative schemes. We aim to design new multipoint fixed point classes without memory, that improve or bring together the existing ones in different areas such as computational efficiency, stability and also convergence order. In this manuscript, we present a family of parametric iterative methods, whose order of convergence is four, that has been designed by using composition and weight function techniques. A qualitative analysis is made, based on complex discrete dynamics, to select those elements of the class with best stability properties on low-degree polynomials. This stable behavior is directly related with the simplicity of the fractals defined by the basins of attraction. In the opposite, particular methods with unstable performance present high-complexity in the fractals of their basins. The stable members are demonstrated also be the best ones in terms of numerical performance of non-polynomial functions, with special emphasis on Colebrook-White equation, with wide applications in Engineering.

Vaccination it is considered a vital strategy in order to mitigate monkeypox by protecting from severe disease and helping in reduction of hospitalisations. In this sense, this study aims to estimate the global prevalence of vaccination acceptance against monkeypox. We conducted a systematic review with a comprehensive search strategy for the following databases: PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science. A random-effect model meta-analysis was carried out using observational studies assessing the intention of vaccines against monkeypox from multiple continents. The quality assessment was developed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale adapted for cross-sectional studies. In addition, a subgroup analysis by study location and population and a sensitivity analysis was developed.Eleven cross-sectional studies were included. A total of 8045 participants were included. The pooled prevalence of monkeypox vaccination acceptance in all participants was 56.0% (95%CI: 42.0–70.0%). In the subgroup analysis of monkeypox vaccine acceptance according to continents, the prevalence of vaccine acceptance was 50.0% (95%CI: 24.0–76.0%) in Asian countries and 70.0% (95%CI: 55.0–84.0%) in European countries. The prevalence of vaccine acceptance was 43.0% (95%CI: 35.0–50.0%) in the general population, 63.0% (95%CI: 42.0–70.0%) in healthcare workers, and 84.0% (95%CI: 83.0–86.0%) in the LGBTI community. Despite the high prevalence of monkeypox vaccination acceptance in the LGBTI community found in our study, vaccination acceptance from healthcare workers and the general population are lower. Governments could use these results for planning, developing or promoting vaccination strategies and public health policies focused on these populations.

This work investigates the transient multilayer electro-osmotic flow of viscoelastic fluids through an annular microchannel. The dimensionless mathematical model of multilayer flow is integrated by the linearized Poisson-Boltzmann equation, the Cauchy momentum equation, the rheological Maxwell model, initial conditions, and the electrostatic and hydrodynamic boundary conditions at liquid-liquid and solid-liquid interfaces. Although the main force that drives the movement of fluids is due to electrokinetic effects, a pressure gradient can also be added to the flow. The semi-analytical solution for the electric potential distribution and velocity profiles considers analytical techniques as the Laplace transform method, with numerical procedures using the inverse matrix method for linear algebraic equations and the concentrated matrix exponential method for the inversion of the Laplace transform. The results presented for velocity profiles and velocity tracking at the transient regime reveal an interesting oscillatory behavior that depends on elastic fluid properties via relaxation times. The time required for the flow to reach steady-state is highly dependent on the viscosity ratios and the dimensionless relaxation times. In addition, the influence of other dimensionless parameters on the flow as the electrokinetic parameters, zeta potentials at the walls, permittivity ratios, ratio of pressure forces to electro-osmotic forces, number of fluid layers, and annular thickness are investigated. The findings of this study have significant implications for the precise control of parallel fluid transport in microfluidic devices for flow-focusing applications.

In this study, the first goal is achieving a hybrid approach composed by an Interval Type-3 Fuzzy Logic System (IT3FLS) for the dynamic adaptation of α and β parameters of Bee Colony Optimization (BCO) algorithm. The second goal is, based on BCO, to find the best partition of the membership functions (MFs) of a Fuzzy Controller (FC) for trajectory tracking in an Autonomous Mobile Robot (AMR). A comparative with different types of Fuzzy Systems, such as Fuzzy BCO with Type-1 Fuzzy Logic System (FBCO-T1FLS), Fuzzy BCO with Interval Type-2 Fuzzy Logic System (FBCO-IT2FLS) and Fuzzy BCO with Generalized Type-2 Fuzzy Logic System (FBCO-GT2FLS) is analyzed. A disturbance is added to verify if the FBCO-IT3FLS performance is better when the uncertainty is present. Several performance indices are used; RMSE, MSE and some metrics of control such as, ITAE, IAE, ISE and ITSE to measure the controller’s performance. The experiments show excellent results using FBCO-IT3FLS and are better than FBCO-GT2FLS, FBCO-IT2FLS and FBCO-T1FLS in the adaptation of α and β parameters.

Amblyseius swirskii is a predatory mite that is widely used for biological control in greenhouses. One way this predator is released is in a formulation in slow-release sachets. These sachets are prepared with the predatory mite, the factitious prey mite Carpoglyphus lactis, and a food substrate for the latter. The objective of the present study was to study the effects of microclimatic conditions in this type of formulation on the population dynamics of mites inside the sachets and on the release of predatory mites. These experiments were conducted under laboratory conditions in two trials. The ambient relative humidity affected the water content of the food substrate of the prey mite inside the sachets, with an initial value of 21.49 ± 0.42%, which was reduced to values of 4.7 ± 0.25%, 10.87 ± 1.03% and 17.27 ± 0.82% after 21 days of trials when they were exposed to low, medium and high ambient relative humidity levels, respectively. Relative humidity significantly altered the dynamics of the populations of both species inside the sachets and the exits of the predator from the sachets to the external environment.

Visible Light Communication (VLC) is a wireless communication technology that uses visible light to transmit information. The most extended implementation of a VLC transmitter employs a DC-DC power converter that biases the High-Brightness LEDs (HB-LEDs), and a Linear Power Amplifier (LPA) that reproduces the communication signal. Unfortunately, the power efficiency of LPAs is very low, thus reducing the overall system efficiency and requiring huge cooling systems to extract the heat. In this work, the use of Class D Switching-Mode Power Amplifiers (SMPAs) is explored in order to overcome that limitation. It is important to note that this SMPA is widely used for different applications, such as audio and RF power amplifiers. Therefore, there are a lot of versions of a Class D SMPA depending on the topology used for the implementation and the modulation strategy used to control the switches. Hence, this work aims to identify, adapt and explain in detail the best approach for implementing a Class D SMPA for VLC. In order to validate the proposed idea, a power-efficient VLC transmitter intended for short-range and low-speed applications was built and evaluated.

Chemical Engineering is a complex discipline that is mainly applied to the industrial context, which makes it difficult to approach real equipment and systems in the classroom to students. Nevertheless, Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) are particularly useful to encourage active and autonomous learning, normally associated with deeper levels of engagement and understanding of the subjects taught. In this way, several studies have demonstrated that immersion has the potential to increase learning experiences and improve creativity and engagement, Virtual Reality (VR) being a remarkable example. In this context, we created and shared with students two immersive resources based on VR: (a) a laboratory 360° video tour, which was used to disseminate the Chemical Engineering Degree in an Open Door Days organized for high school students; and (b) an experiential learning tool integrated with Moodle, which was available previously to face-to-face practical lessons of the subject Separation Operations. In both cases, the feedback from the participant students was positive. High school students increased their interest in Chemical Engineering Degree after viewing the 360° video, meanwhile undergraduate students found the immersive tool useful in the subsequent performance of real practical activities. From the perspective of professors, creation of these resources required purchase of equipment, time and effort, but they were highly valued as a tool for disseminating and supporting teaching, being an initial starting point for the creation of more enhanced VR-based materials.

C-reactive protein-to-albumin ratio (CAR) is an independent risk factor in cardiovascular, cerebrovascular, and infectious diseases. Through this study, we investigated the CAR values with respect to the severity and mortality of COVID-19 patients. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to retrieve studies that evaluated CAR values upon hospital admission in relation to the severity or mortality of COVID-19 patients. We adopted a random-effect model to calculate the pooled mean difference (MD) and their 95% confidence intervals (CI). Quality assessment was appraised using a Newcastle–Ottawa scale and publication bias was assessed using the Begg-test and funnel plot. We equally performed a subgroup analysis using study location and a sensitivity analysis only with studies with low risk of bias. We analyzed 32 studies (n = 12445). Severe COVID-19 patients had higher on-admission CAR values than non-severe COVID-19 patients (MD: 1.69; 95% CI: 1.35–2.03; p < 0.001; I2 = 89%). Non-survivor patients with COVID-19 had higher CAR values than survivor patients (MD: 2.59; 95% CI: 1.95–3.23; p < 0.001; I2 = 92%). In sensitivity analysis, the relationship remained with a decreasing of heterogeneity for severity (MD: 1.22; 95% CI: 1.03–1.40; p < 0.001; I2 = 13%) and for mortality (MD: 2.99; 95% CI: 2.47–3.51; p < 0.001; I2 = 0%). High CAR values were found in COVID-19 patients who developed severe disease or died.
