AIM: In this study, we use Artificial Intelligence (AI), including Machine (ML) and Deep Learning (DL), to predict the long-term survival of resectable esophageal cancer (EC) patients in a high-volume surgical center. Our objective is to evaluate the predictive efficacy of AI methods for survival prognosis across different time points of oncological treatment. This involves comparing models trained with clinical data, integrating either Tumor, Node, Metastasis (TNM) classification or tumor biomarker analysis, for long-term survival predictions. METHODS: In this retrospective study, 1002 patients diagnosed with EC between 1996 and 2021 were analyzed. The original dataset comprised 55 pre- and postoperative patient characteristics and 55 immunohistochemically evaluated biomarkers following surgical intervention. To predict the five-year survival status, four AI methods (Random Forest RF, XG Boost XG, Artificial Neural Network ANN, TabNet TN) and Logistic Regression (LR) were employed. The models were trained using three predefined subsets of the training dataset as follows: (I) the baseline dataset (BL) consisting of pre-, intra-, and postoperative data, including the TNM but excluding tumor biomarkers, (II) clinical data accessible at the time of the initial diagnostic workup (primary staging dataset, PS), and (III) the PS dataset including tumor biomarkers from tissue microarrays (PS + biomarkers), excluding TNM status. We used permutation feature importance for feature selection to identify only important variables for AI-driven reduced datasets and subsequent model retraining. RESULTS: Model training on the BL dataset demonstrated similar predictive performances for all models (Accuracy, ACC: 0.73/0.74/0.76/0.75/0.73; AUC: 0.78/0.82/0.83/0.80/0.79 RF/XG/ANN/TN/LR, respectively). The predictive performance and generalizability declined when the models were trained with the PS dataset. Surprisingly, the inclusion of biomarkers in the PS dataset for model training led to improved predictions (PS dataset vs. PS dataset + biomarkers; ACC: 0.70 vs. 0.77/0.73 vs. 0.79/0.71 vs. 0.75/0.69 vs. 0.72/0.63 vs. 0.66; AUC: 0.77 vs. 0.83/0.80 vs. 0.85/0.76 vs. 0.86/0.70 vs. 0.76/0.70 vs. 0.69 RF/XG/ANN/TN/LR, respectively). The AI models outperformed LR when trained with the PS datasets. The important features shared after AI-driven feature selection in all models trained with the BL dataset included histopathological lymph node status (pN), histopathological tumor size (pT), clinical tumor size (cT), age at the time of surgery, and postoperative tracheostomy. Following training with the PS dataset with biomarkers, the important predictive features included patient age at the time of surgery, TP-53 gene mutation, Mesothelin expression, thymidine phosphorylase (TYMP) expression, NANOG homebox protein expression, and indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO) expressed on tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes, as well as tumor-infiltrating Mast- and Natural killer cells. CONCLUSION: Different AI methods similarly predict the long-term survival status of patients with EC and outperform LR, the state-of-the-art classification model. Survival status can be predicted with similar predictive performance with patient data at an early stage of treatment when utilizing additional biomarker analysis. This suggests that individual survival predictions can be made early in cancer treatment by utilizing biomarkers, reducing the necessity for the pathological TNM status post-surgery. This study identifies important features for survival predictions that vary depending on the timing of oncological treatment.

Docetaxel (DTX), a semi-synthetic analogue of paclitaxel (taxol), is known to exert potent anticancer activity in various cancer cells by suppressing normal microtubule dynamics. In this study, we examined how the anticancer effect of DTX is regulated by polyphenols extracted from Korean Artemisia annua L. (pKAL) in DU145 prostate cancer cells (mutant p53) and HCT116 colorectal cancer cells (wild-type p53). Here, we show that the anticancer effect of DTX was enhanced more significantly by pKAL in HCT116 cells than in DU145 cells via phase-contrast microscopy, CCK-8 assay, Western blot, and flow cytometric analysis of annexin V/propidium iodide-stained cells. Notably, mutant p53 was slightly downregulated by single treatment of pKAL or DTX in DU145 cells, whereas wild-type p53 was significantly upregulated by pKAL or DTX in HCT116 cells. Moreover, the enhanced anticancer effect of DTX by pKAL in HCT116 cells was significantly associated with the suppression of DTX-induced p53 upregulation, increase of DTX-induced phospho-p38, and decrease of DTX-regulated cyclin A, cyclin B1, AKT, caspase-8, PARP1, GM130, NF-κB p65, and LDHA, leading to the increased apoptotic cell death and plasma membrane permeability. Our results suggest that pKAL could effectively improve the anticancer effect of DTX-containing chemotherapy used to treat various cancers expressing wild-type p53.

ROV operators often encounter challenges with orientation awareness while operating underwater, primarily due to relying solely on 2D camera feeds to manually control the ROV robot arm. This limitation in underwater visibility and orientation awareness, as observed among Malaysian ROV operators, can compromise the accuracy of arm placement, and pose a risk of tool damage if not handle with care. To address this, a 3D orientation monitoring system for ROVs has been developed, leveraging measurement sensors with nine degrees of freedom (DOF). These sensors capture crucial parameters such as roll, pitch, yaw, and heading, providing real-time data on the ROV’s position along the X, Y, and Z axes to ensure precise orientation. These data are then utilized to generate and process 3D imaging and develop a corresponding 3D model of the operational ROV underwater, accurately reflecting its orientation in a visual representation by using an open-source platform. Due to constraints set by an agreement with the working class ROV operators, only short-term tests (up to 1 min) could be performed at the dockyard. A video demonstration of a working class ROV replica moving and reflecting in a 3D simulation in real-time was also presented. Despite these limitations, our findings demonstrate the feasibility and potential of a cost-effective 3D orientation visualization system for working class ROVs. With mean absolute error (MAE) error less than 2%, the results align with the performance expectations of the actual working ROV.

Background: The aim of this study was to establish a deep learning prediction model for neoadjuvant FLOT chemotherapy response. The neural network utilized clinical data and visual information from whole-slide images (WSIs) of therapy-naïve gastroesophageal cancer biopsies. Methods: This study included 78 patients from the University Hospital of Cologne and 59 patients from the University Hospital of Heidelberg used as external validation. Results: After surgical resection, 33 patients from Cologne (42.3%) were ypN0 and 45 patients (57.7%) were ypN+, while 23 patients from Heidelberg (39.0%) were ypN0 and 36 patients (61.0%) were ypN+ (p = 0.695). The neural network had an accuracy of 92.1% to predict lymph node metastasis and the area under the curve (AUC) was 0.726. A total of 43 patients from Cologne (55.1%) had less than 50% residual vital tumor (RVT) compared to 34 patients from Heidelberg (57.6%, p = 0.955). The model was able to predict tumor regression with an error of ±14.1% and an AUC of 0.648. Conclusions: This study demonstrates that visual features extracted by deep learning from therapy-naïve biopsies of gastroesophageal adenocarcinomas correlate with positive lymph nodes and tumor regression. The results will be confirmed in prospective studies to achieve early allocation of patients to the most promising treatment.

Background and Objective: Understanding whether cranial nerve palsy (CNP) acts as an independent risk factor for kidney cancer could have important implications for patient care, early detection, and potentially the development of preventive strategies for this type of cancer in individuals with CNP. This study aimed to examine the risk of kidney cancer following the onset of ocular motor CNP and assess whether CNP could be considered an independent risk factor for kidney cancer. Materials and Methods: A population-based cohort study was conducted using data from the National Sample Cohort (NSC) database of Korea’s National Health Insurance Service which was collected from 2010 to 2017. Follow-up was until kidney cancer development, death, or 31 December 2018. Cox proportional hazard regression analysis was performed to determine hazard ratios (HRs) for kidney cancer according to CNP status. Participants aged 20 years or more diagnosed with CNP from 2010 to 2017 were included. Exclusions comprised individuals with specific pre-existing conditions, inability to match a control group, and missing data, among others. CNP patients were age–sex matched in a 1:5 ratio with control cases. The primary outcome was incidence of kidney cancer during the follow-up period. Results: This study comprised 118,686 participants: 19,781 in the CNP group, and 98,905 in the control group. Compared to the control group, participants with CNP had a higher risk of kidney cancer (adjusted HR in model 4, 1.599 [95% CI, 1.116–2.29]). After a 3-year lag period, the CNP group had a significantly higher risk (adjusted HR in model 4, 1.987 [95% CI, 1.252–3.154]). Conclusions: Ocular motor CNP may be an independent risk factor for kidney cancer, as indicated by a higher incidence of kidney cancer in CNP patients. Further research is needed to elucidate the underlying mechanisms and explore potential preventive measures for kidney cancer in patients with ocular motor CNP.

This research addresses the crucial task of improving accuracy in the semantic segmentation of aerial imagery, essential for applications such as urban planning and environmental monitoring. This study emphasizes the significance of maintaining the Intersection over Union (IOU) score as a metric and employs data augmentation with the Patchify library, using a patch size of 256, to effectively augment the dataset, which is subsequently split into training and testing sets. The core of this investigation lies in a novel architecture that combines a U-Net framework with self-attention mechanisms and separable convolutions. The introduction of self-attention mechanisms enhances the model’s understanding of image context, while separable convolutions expedite the training process, contributing to overall efficiency. The proposed model demonstrates a substantial accuracy improvement, surpassing the previous state-of-the-art Dense Plus U-Net, achieving an accuracy of 91% compared to the former’s 86%. Visual representations, including original patch images, original masked patches, and predicted patch masks, showcase the model’s proficiency in semantic segmentation, marking a significant advancement in aerial image analysis and underscoring the importance of innovative architectural elements for enhanced accuracy and efficiency in such tasks.

Objective: Six months after the onset of stroke, over 60% of patients experience upper limb dysfunction, with spasticity being a major contributor alongside muscle weakness. This study investigated the effect of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) with taping on wrist spasticity, strength, and upper extremity function in patients with stroke. Methods: In total, 40 patients with stroke were included and randomly divided into two groups: the TENS + taping (n = 20, age 52.4 ± 9.3 (range: 39 to 70)) and TENS (n = 20, age 53.5 ± 10.8 (range: 39 to 74)) groups. All subjects performed 30 sessions of task-related training, which included 10 min of postural control training and 20 min of task performance. Additionally, all subjects received TENS on the spastic muscle belly for 30 min before task-related training. In the TENS + taping group, taping was additionally applied to the forearm and wrist but not in the TENS group. The Modified Ashworth Scale was used to measure spasticity, and a handheld dynamometer was used to measure muscle strength. The Fugl–Meyer Assessment of Upper Extremity was used to evaluate the functional ability of the upper extremity. Results: In the TENS + taping group, spasticity and upper extremity function were significantly improved as compared to those in the TENS group (p < 0.05). However, no significant difference in muscle strength was observed between the two groups (p > 0.05). Conclusions: This study demonstrated that the combination of TENS and taping for spasticity and function of the upper extremity was more effective in relieving the spasticity than TENS alone. Therefore, we suggest this combination as an additional treatment for spasticity and function of the upper extremity.

The ongoing expansion of the Fourth Industrial Revolution has led to a diversification of drone applications. Among them, this paper focuses on the critical technology required for load management using drones. Generally, when using autonomous drones, global positioning system (GPS) receivers attached to the drones are used to determine the drone’s position. However, GPS integrated into commercially available drones have an error margin on the order of several meters. This paper, proposes a method that uses fixed-size quick response (QR) codes to maintain the error of drone 3D localization within a specific range and enable accurate mapping. In the drone’s 3D localization experiment, the errors were maintained within a specific range, with average errors ranging from approximately 0 to 3 cm, showing minimal differences. During the mapping experiment, the average error between the actual and estimated positions of the QR codes was consistently around 0 to 3 cm.

Recent studies suggest that the anticancer activity of β-lapachone (β-Lap) could be improved by different types of bioactive phytochemicals. The aim of this study was to elucidate how the anticancer effect of β-Lap is regulated by polyphenols extracted from Korean Artemisia annua L. (pKAL) in parental HCT116 and oxaliplatin-resistant (OxPt-R) HCT116 colorectal cancer cells. Here, we show that the anticancer effect of β-Lap is more enhanced by pKAL in HCT116-OxPt-R cells than in HCT116 cells via a CCK-8 assay, Western blot, and phase-contrast microscopy analysis of hematoxylin-stained cells. This phenomenon was associated with the suppression of OxPt-R-related upregulated proteins including p53 and β-catenin, the downregulation of cell survival proteins including TERT, CD44, and EGFR, and the upregulation of cleaved HSP90, γ-H2AX, and LC3B-I/II. A bioinformatics analysis of 21 proteins regulated by combined treatment of pKAL and β-Lap in HCT116-OxPt-R cells showed that the enhanced anticancer effect of β-Lap by pKAL was related to the inhibition of negative regulation of apoptotic process and the induction of DNA damage through TERT, CD44, and EGFR-mediated multiple signaling networks. Our results suggest that the combination of pKAL and β-Lap could be used as a new therapy with low toxicity to overcome the OxPt-R that occurred in various OxPt-containing cancer treatments.

This study was conducted to determine the effect of muscle energy technique (MET) on pelvic alignment, leg length, pain, and fatigue in chronic low back pain (CLBP) patients with leg length discrepancy (LLD). Forty-two CLBP patients with LLD volunteered to participate and were randomly assigned to the MET group (n = 21) and placebo group (n = 21). The intervention group performed three METs with 5 s of isometric contraction and 30 s of rest once, and the placebo group performed three times the placebo-MET, maintaining the same posture as the MET group without muscle isometric contraction. X-ray equipment, tape measure, and visual analog scale were used to evaluate pelvic alignment, leg length, pain, and fatigue before and after each intervention. In comparison pre- and postintervention, only the MET group showed significant changes in pelvic alignment, leg length, pain, and fatigue (p < 0.05). In comparison between groups, there were significant differences in all variables (pelvic alignment, leg length, pain, fatigue) (p < 0.05). The results of this study confirmed the therapeutic effect of MET for improving pelvic alignment, functional LLD, pain, and fatigue in CLBP patients with functional LLD. Future research is needed to evaluate the long-term effect on more chronic low back pain patients.

This paper presents the design, analysis, and control of a dual transformer-based bidirectional DC/DC resonant converter featuring balanced voltage stress across all the resonant capacitors. Compared to existing topologies, the proposed converter has a dual-rectifier structure on the secondary side, which allows operation over a wide load range with balanced voltage stress across all resonant components. The transformer stress is greatly reduced by employing two small transformers, thus greatly lowering thermal as well electrical stresses on the transformers’ windings. Furthermore, by operating the primary-side interleaved converter at a fixed 50% duty, input current ripples are significantly reduced. The proposed controller consists of a feedforward control part for effective system uncertainty compensation and a feedback control part for the convergence of system error dynamics. Notably, state-plane trajectory theory is employed to derive accurate feedforward compensation terms. Additionally, the effect of resonant elements’ parameter mismatch is analyzed in detail. The designed controller was implemented using the TI TMS320F28377D DSP on a 3.3 kW prototype hardware board. Detailed experimental investigations under tough, practical operating conditions corroborate an effective bidirectional power transfer operation with a balanced voltage stress distribution in each resonant element.

Bee venom is a traditional drug used to treat the nervous system, musculoskeletal system, and autoimmune diseases. A previous study found that bee venom and one of its components, phospholipase A2, can protect the brain by suppressing neuroinflammation and can also be used to treat Alzheimer’s disease. Thus, new composition bee venom (NCBV), which has an increased phospholipase A2 content of up to 76.2%, was developed as a treatment agent for Alzheimer’s disease by INISTst (Republic of Korea). The aim of this study was to characterize the pharmacokinetic profiles of phospholipase A2 contained in NCBV in rats. Single subcutaneous administration of NCBV at doses ranging from 0.2 mg/kg to 5 mg/kg was conducted, and pharmacokinetic parameters of bee venom-derived phospholipase A2 (bvPLA2) increased in a dose-dependent manner. Additionally, no accumulation was observed following multiple dosings (0.5 mg/kg/week), and other constituents of NCBV did not affect the pharmacokinetic profile of bvPLA2. After subcutaneous injection of NCBV, the tissue-to-plasma ratios of bvPLA2 for the tested nine tissues were all

β-lapachone (β-Lap), a topoisomerase inhibitor, is a naturally occurring ortho-naphthoquinone phytochemical and is involved in drug resistance mechanisms. Oxaliplatin (OxPt) is a commonly used chemotherapeutic drug for metastatic colorectal cancer, and OxPt-induced drug resistance remains to be solved to increase chances of successful therapy. To reveal the novel role of β-Lap associated with OxPt resistance, 5 μM OxPt-resistant HCT116 cells (HCT116-OxPt-R) were generated and characterized via hematoxylin staining, a CCK-8 assay and Western blot analysis. HCT116-OxPt-R cells were shown to have OxPt-specific resistance, increased aggresomes, upregulated p53 and downregulated caspase-9 and XIAP. Through signaling explorer antibody array, nucleophosmin (NPM), CD37, Nkx-2.5, SOD1, H2B, calreticulin, p38 MAPK, caspase-2, cadherin-9, MMP23B, ACOT2, Lys-acetylated proteins, COL3A1, TrkA, MPS-1, CD44, ITGA5, claudin-3, parkin and ACTG2 were identified as OxPt-R-related proteins due to a more than two-fold alteration in protein status. Gene ontology analysis suggested that TrkA, Nkx-2.5 and SOD1 were related to certain aggresomes produced in HCT116-OxPt-R cells. Moreover, β-Lap exerted more cytotoxicity and morphological changes in HCT116-OxPt-R cells than in HCT116 cells through the downregulation of p53, Lys-acetylated proteins, TrkA, p38 MAPK, SOD1, caspase-2, CD44 and NPM. Our results indicate that β-Lap could be used as an alternative drug to overcome the upregulated p53-containing OxPt-R caused by various OxPt-containing chemotherapies.

Proper seed germination is important for seedling establishment and growth in fields under drought caused by climate change. In the present study, the beneficial effects of hydrogen peroxide on seed germination were investigated by proteome analysis. Sorghum seeds were subjected to drought stress adjusted to the various water potentials of 0, −0.2, and −0.5 MPa using polyethylene glycol (PEG) 6000 and treated with hydrogen peroxide at different concentrations (0, 10, 20, 50, and 100 mM). Germination percentage and seedling growth were determined at 6 days after imbibition, and proteins from embryos were analyzed. As a result of the study, it was found that the reduced germination percentage and seedling growth under drought stress were alleviated by hydrogen peroxide treatment. Proteins induced in hydrogen peroxide-treated embryos included glycolysis-related enzymes (25%) and stress-defense proteins (30%). Among the glycolysis-related enzymes, fructokinase-1 was higher only under drought and 0 mM H2O2 treatment, and phosphoglycerate kinase was higher than control under drought and 100 mM H2O2 treatment. Hydrogen peroxide treatment also increased the expression of antioxidant enzymes related to stress defense. The results that hydrogen peroxide treatment increases germination rate and seedling growth by increasing energy production and defense activity suggest a practical application of H2O2 at 100 mM for reducing the drought stress in sorghum.

Ethyl carbamate (EC) is a naturally occurring substance in alcoholic beverages from the reaction of ethanol with urea during fermentation and storage. EC can cause dizziness and vomiting when consumed in small quantities and develop kidney cancer when consumed in excess. Thus, the reduction of EC formation in alcoholic beverages is important for food safety and human health. One of the strategies for reducing EC contents in alcoholic beverages is developing a new yeast starter strain to enable less formation of EC during fermentation. In this study, we isolated a polyploid wild-type yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain from the Nuruk (Korean traditional grain-based inoculum of wild yeast and mold) and developed a starter culture by genome engineering to reduce EC contents in alcoholic beverages. We deleted multiple copies of the target genes involved in the EC formation in the S. cerevisiae by a CRISPR/Cas9-based genome editing tool. First, the CAR1 gene encoding for the arginase enzyme responsible for the formation of urea was completely deleted in the genome of S. cerevisiae. Additionally, the GZF3 gene encoding the transcription factor controlling expression levels of several genes (DUR1, 2, and DUR3) related to urea absorption and degradation was deleted in S. cerevisiae to further reduce the EC formation. The effects of gene deletion were validated by RT-qPCR to confirm changes in transcriptional levels of the EC-related genes. The resulting strain of S. cerevisiae carrying a double deletion of CAR1 and GZF3 genes successfully reduced the EC contents in the fermentation medium without significant changes in alcohol contents and fermentation profiles when compared to the wild-type strain. Finally, we brewed the Korean traditional rice wine Makgeolli using the double deletion strain of S. cerevisiae dCAR1&GZF3, resulting in a significant reduction of the EC content in Makgeolli up to 41.6% when compared to the wild-type strain. This study successfully demonstrated the development of a starter culture to reduce the EC formation in an alcoholic beverage by CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing of the wild yeast.

Despite a growing burden posed by cardiovascular disease (CVD) in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients, large-scale studies on the association between the characteristics of RA patients and CVD risks and studies adjusted for various confounding factors are lacking. In this large-scale nationwide cohort study, we aimed to investigate the association between CVD risk and RA and factors that may increase CVD risk using a dataset provided by the Korean National Health Insurance Service (NHIS). We enrolled 136,469 patients with RA who participated in national health examinations within two years of RA diagnosis between 2010 and 2017 and non-RA controls matched by age and sex (n = 682,345). The outcome was the occurrence of myocardial infarction (MI) or stroke. MI was defined as one hospitalization or two outpatient visits with ICD-10-CM codes I21 or I22. Stroke was defined as one hospitalization with ICD-10-CM codes I63 or I64 and a claim for brain imaging (CT or MRI). The Cox proportional hazard model and Kaplan–Meier curve were used for analysis. The mean follow-up duration was 4.7 years, and the incidence rate of CVD was higher in the RA group than the control group (MI: 3.20 vs. 2.08; stroke: 2.84 vs. 2.33 per 1000 person-years). The risk of MI and stroke was about 50% and 20% higher, respectively, in RA patients. The association between RA and CVD was prominent in females after adjusting for confounding variables. The association between RA and risk of MI was significant in individuals without DM. Therefore, appropriate screening for CVD is important in all RA patients including females and younger patients.

According to the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs, in 2017, the elderly, aged 65 or older, had an average of 2.7 chronic diseases per person. The concern for the medical welfare of the elderly is increasing due to a low birth rate, an aging population, and the lack of medical personnel. The demand for services that take user age, cognitive capacity, and difficulty into account is rising. As a result, there is an increased demand for smart healthcare systems that can lower hospital admissions and offer patients individualized care. This has motivated us to develop an AI system that can easily screen and manage neurological diseases through videos. As neurological diseases can be diagnosed by visual analysis to some extent, in this study, we set out to estimate the possibility of a person having a neurological disease from videos. Among neurological diseases, we focus on stroke because it is a common condition in the elderly population and results in high mortality and morbidity worldwide. The proposed method consists of three steps: (1) transforming neurological examination videos into landmark data, (2) converting the landmark data into recurrence plots, and (3) estimating the possibility of a stroke using deep neural networks. Major features, such as the hand, face, pupil, and body movements of a person are extracted from test videos taken under several neurological examination protocols using deep-learning-based landmark extractors. Sequences of these landmark data are then converted into recurrence plots, which can be interpreted as images. These images can be fed into convolutional neural networks to classify stroke using feature-fusion techniques. A case study of the application of a disease screening test to assess the capability of the proposed method is presented.

Obesity associated with a Western diet such as a high-fat diet (HFD) is a known risk factor for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and colorectal cancer (CRC). In this study, we aimed to develop fecal microbiome data-based deep learning algorithms for the risk assessment of colorectal diseases. The effects of a HFD and a candidate food (Nypa fruticans, NF) on IBD and CRC risk reduction were also evaluated. Fecal microbiome data were obtained from 109 IBD patients, 111 CRC patients, and 395 healthy control (HC) subjects by 16S rDNA amplicon sequencing. IBD and CRC risk assessment prediction models were then constructed by deep learning algorithms. Dietary effects were evaluated based on fecal microbiome data from rats fed on a regular chow diet (RCD), HFD, and HFD plus ethanol extracts or water extracts of NF. There were significant differences in taxa when IBD and CRC were compared with HC. The diagnostic performance (area under curve, AUC) of the deep learning algorithm was 0.84 for IBD and 0.80 for CRC prediction. Based on the rat fecal microbiome data, IBD and CRC risks were increased in HFD-fed rats versus RCD-fed rats. Interestingly, in the HFD-induced obesity model, the IBD and CRC risk scores were significantly lowered by the administration of ethanol extracts of NF, but not by the administration of water extracts of NF. In conclusion, changes in the fecal microbiome of obesity by Western diet could be important risk factors for the development of IBD and CRC. The risk prediction model developed in this study could be used to evaluate dietary efficacy.

The interaction between statins and omega-3 fatty acids remains controversial. The aim of this phase 1 trial was to evaluate the pharmacokinetics of drug-drug interaction between atorvastatin and omega-3 fatty acids. Treatments were once-daily oral administrations of omega-3 (4 g), atorvastatin (40 mg), and both for 14 days, 7 days, and 14 days, respectively, with washout periods. The concentrations of atorvastatin, 2-OH-atorvastatin, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) were determined with LC-MS/MS. Parameters of DHA and EPA were analyzed after baseline correction. A total of 37 subjects completed the study without any major violations. The geometric mean ratios (GMRs) and 90% confidence intervals (CIs) of the co-administration of a single drug for the area under the concentration–time curve during the dosing interval at steady state of atorvastatin, 2-OH-atorvastatin, DHA, and EPA were 1.042 (0.971–1.118), 1.185 (1.113–1.262), 0.157 (0.091–0.271), and 0.557 (0.396–0.784), respectively. The GMRs (90% Cis) for the co-administration at steady state of atorvastatin, 2-OH-atorvastatin, DHA, and EPA were 1.150 (0.990–1.335), 1.301 (1.2707–1.1401), 0.320 (0.243–0.422), and 0.589 (0.487–0.712), respectively. The 90% CIs for most primary endpoints were outside the range of typical bioequivalence, indicating a pharmacokinetic interaction between atorvastatin and omega-3.

As the elderly population increases globally, the demand for systems and algorithms that target the elderly is increasing. Focusing on the extendibility of smart mirrors, our purpose is to create a motion detection system based on video input by an attached device (an RGB camera). The motion detection system presented in this paper is based on an algorithm that returns a Boolean value indicating the detection of motion based on skeletal information. We analyzed the problems that occur when the adjacent frame subtraction method (AFSM) is used in the motion detection algorithm based on the skeleton-related output of the pose estimation model. We compared and tested the motion recognition rate for slow-motion with the previously used AFSM and the vector sum method (VSM) proposed in this paper. As an experimental result, the slow-motion detection rate showed an increase of 30–70%.

The impact of obesity could differ according to menopausal status since women undergo significant physiologic and metabolic changes due to menopause. We investigated the association between various major obesity indicators and the risk of impaired fasting glucose (IFG) according to menopausal status using nationally representative data. A total of 571,286 premenopausal and 519,561 postmenopausal women who underwent both Korean National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) cancer screening in 2009 and health check-ups in 2017 were analyzed. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to assess the effect of independent variables of body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) in 2009, on dependent variable IFG in 2017. After adjusting for potential confounders, the adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of developing IFG were analyzed. In the premenopausal group, the OR of obese BMI (≥25 kg/m2, 2) women was increased to 2.228 (95% CI: 2.139–2.321) compared to the normal BMI (≥18.5, 2) women as a reference. In the postmenopausal group, there was also a higher OR of 1.778 (95% CI: 1.715–1.843) in the obese BMI women compared to the normal group. A similar association of increasing ORs for IFG was shown in both groups when stratified by WC and WHtR. This nationwide study revealed that obesity and abdominal obesity, defined by various obesity indicators, consistently increased odds of acquiring IFG after 8 years in both pre- and postmenopausal groups, with the association being more robust in the premenopausal group. Our findings suggest that weight management and lifestyle modification may require more attention in premenopausal women.

We investigated the effects of the partial substitution of corn grain in the diet with beet pulp on growth performance, ruminal fermentation characteristics, microbial profiles, and blood lipogenic parameters in fattening steers. Twelve Korean cattle steers (body weight, 485 ± 19.32 kg; age, 18.0 ± 0.17 months) were equally divided into corn grain (CG) and beet pulp (BP) groups. Approximately 75% of dry matter of the requirement was offered as a concentrate portion, and the remaining 25% was offered as oat straw. Eighty percent of the concentrate portion was provided by a pelleted basal concentrate, and the remaining 20% with corn grain for the CG group, or 18% beet pulp plus 2.0% rumen-protected fat for the BP group, respectively, by top dressing. The experiment was conducted for 14 weeks, including a 2-week acclimation period. Growth rate was not affected by beet pulp feeding (p = 0.55). The molar proportions of ruminal acetate (p < 0.05) on wk 4, the relative abundances of ruminal cellulolytic bacteria, including Fibrobacter succinogenes (p = 0.01) and Ruminococcus albus (p = 0.04) on wk 12, and serum insulin concentrations (p < 0.05) on wk 12 were higher in the BP group than in the CG group, whereas the molar proportions of propionate (p < 0.05) on wks 8 and 12 and serum nonesterified fatty acids (p < 0.05) on wk 12 were lower in the BP group. Beet pulp could be used as a lipogenic energy source without affecting growth performance during the fattening period of cattle.

As environmental pollution deteriorates, the acceleration of decarbonization worldwide is underway. Several countries, including Korea, are incorporating new and renewable energy into existing systems, and various methods of decarbonization are being researched. With changes in the control environment, the expansion of the system linkage of new and renewable energy can cause system instability problems. This paper introduces an operation plan that uses the fast response characteristics of energy storage system(s) (ESS) to improve stability and review system stability as a result of the expansion of new and renewable energy on Jeju Island. Frequency stability was ensured through an analysis of frequency response characteristics in the event of a system accident, and an efficient ESS operation plan was simulated by changing the ESS parameters. Through this simulation, stable ESS operation and hunting in the frequency recovery process were minimized through cooperation between the existing and new ESS via a wide dead-band range and speed adjustment rate correction, and the lowest frequency was improved.

Computed tomography (CT) is undoubtedly the most reliable and the only method for accurate diagnosis of sinusitis, while X-ray has long been used as the first imaging technique for early detection of sinusitis symptoms. More importantly, radiography plays a key role in determining whether or not a CT examination should be performed for further evaluation. In order to simplify the diagnostic process of paranasal sinus view and moreover to avoid the use of CT scans which have disadvantages such as high radiation dose, high cost, and high time consumption, this paper proposed a multi-view CNN able to faithfully estimate the severity of sinusitis. In this study, a multi-view convolutional neural network (CNN) is proposed which is able to accurately estimate the severity of sinusitis by analyzing only radiographs consisting of Waters’ view and Caldwell’s view without the aid of CT scans. The proposed network is designed as a cascaded architecture, and can simultaneously provide decisions for maxillary sinus localization and sinusitis classification. We obtained an average area under the curve (AUC) of 0.722 for maxillary sinusitis classification, and an AUC of 0.750 and 0.700 for the left and right maxillary sinusitis, respectively, using the proposed network.

The anticancer effects of natural phytochemicals are relevant to the modulation of cytokine signaling pathways in various cancer cells with stem-like properties as well as immune cells. The aim of this study was to elucidate a novel anticancer mechanism of Artemisia annua L. polyphenols (pKAL) involved in the regulation of growth factors, cytokines and mediators in stem-like HCT116 colorectal cancer cells. Through RayBiotech human L-1000 antibody array and bioinformatics analysis, we show here that pKAL-induced anticancer effects are associated with downregulation of growth factor and cytokine signaling proteins including TGFA, FGF16, PDGFC, CCL28, CXCR3, IRF6 and SMAD1. Notably, we found that TGF-β signaling proteins such as GDF10, ENG and TGFBR2 and well-known survival proteins such as NGF-β, VEGFD and insulin were significantly upregulated by pKAL. Moreover, the results of hematoxylin staining, cell viability assay and Western blot analysis demonstrated that TGF-β1 and NGF-β attenuated pKAL-induced anticancer effects by inhibiting pKAL-induced downregulation of caspase-8, NF-κB p65 and cyclin D1. These results suggest that certain survival mediators may be activated by pKAL through the TGF-β1 and NGF-β signaling pathways during pKAL-induced cell death and thus, strategies to inhibit the survival signaling are inevitably required for more effective anticancer effects of pKAL.

The purpose of this study was to develop a vertical seismic isolation device essential for the three-dimensional seismic isolation design of nuclear power plant equipment. The vertical seismic isolation device in this study has a concept that can be integrally combined with a conventional laminated rubber bearing, a horizontal seismic isolator with a design vertical load of 10 kN. To develop the vertical seismic isolation device, the vertical spring and the seismic energy dissipation device capable of limiting the vertical displacement of the spring were designed and their performances were verified through actual tests. In this study, the target elevation of the floor is 136 ft, where safety-related nuclear equipment, such as cabinet and remote shutdown console, etc., is installed. The sensitivity studies were carried out to investigate the optimal design vertical isolation frequencies for the target building elevation. Based on the results of the sensitivity study, a disc spring and a helical coil spring were selected for the vertical stiffness design, and the steel damper was selected for the seismic energy dissipation, and their performance characteristics were tested to confirm the design performance. For the steel damper, three types were designed and their energy dissipation characteristics by hysteretic behavior were confirmed by the inelastic finite element analyses and the tests in static fully reversed cyclic conditions. Through the study of the vertical seismic isolation device, it was found that 2.5 Hz~3.0 Hz is appropriate for the optimal design vertical isolation. With results of the vertical seismic isolation performance analysis, the appropriate number of steel dampers are proposed to limit the vertical seismic displacement of the spring within the static displacement range by the design vertical load.

Emerging evidence suggests that breast cancer stem cells (BCSCs), and epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT) may be involved in resistance to doxorubicin. However, it is unlear whether the doxorubicin-induced EMT and expansion of BCSCs is related to cancer dormancy, or outgrowing cancer cells with maintaining resistance to doxorubicin, or whether the phenotypes can be transferred to other doxorubicin-sensitive cells. Here, we characterized the phenotype of doxorubicin-resistant TNBC cells while monitoring the EMT process and expansion of CSCs during the establishment of doxorubicin-resistant MDA-MB-231 human breast cancer cells (DRM cells). In addition, we assessed the potential signaling associated with the EMT process and expansion of CSCs in doxorubicin-resistance of DRM cells. DRM cells exhibited morphological changes from spindle-shaped MDA-MB-231 cells into round-shaped giant cells. They exhibited highly proliferative, EMT, adhesive, and invasive phenotypes. Molecularly, they showed up-regulation of Cyclin D1, mesenchymal markers (β-catenin, and N-cadherin), MMP-2, MMP-9, ICAM-1 and down-regulation of E-cadherin. As the molecular mechanisms responsible for the resistance to doxorubicin, up-regulation of EGFR and its downstream signaling, were suggested. AKT and ERK1/2 expression were also increased in DRM cells with the advancement of resistance to doxorubicin. Furthermore, doxorubicin resistance of DRM cells can be transferred by autocrine signaling. In conclusion, DRM cells harbored EMT features with CSC properties possessing increased proliferation, invasion, migration, and adhesion ability. The doxorubicin resistance, and doxorubicin-induced EMT and CSC properties of DRM cells, can be transferred to parental cells through autocrine signaling. Lastly, this feature of DRM cells might be associated with the up-regulation of EGFR.

This paper proposes a post-processing method called bidirectional interpolation method for sampling-based path planning algorithms, such as rapidly-exploring random tree (RRT). The proposed algorithm applies interpolation to the path generated by the sampling-based path planning algorithm. In this study, the proposed algorithm is applied to the path created by RRT-connect and six environmental maps were used for the verification. It was visually and quantitatively confirmed that, in all maps, not only path lengths but also the piecewise linear shape were decreased compared to the path generated by RRT-connect. To check the proposed algorithm’s performance, visibility graph, RRT-connect algorithm, Triangular-RRT-connect algorithm and post triangular processing of midpoint interpolation (PTPMI) were compared in various environmental maps through simulation. Based on these experimental results, the proposed algorithm shows similar planning time but shorter path length than previous RRT-like algorithms as well as RRT-like algorithms with PTPMI having a similar number of samples.

To identify the dietary composition and characteristics of both Adélie (Pygoscelis adeliae) and Emperor (Aptenodytes forsteri) penguins at four breeding sites, we performed stable carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) isotope analysis of down samples taken from penguin chicks. Adélie Penguin chicks at Cape Hallett mostly fed on Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba; 65.5 ± 3.5%), a reflection of the prevalence of that species near Cape Hallett, and no significant differences were noted between 2017 and 2018. However, Adélie Penguin chicks at Inexpressible Island, located near Terra Nova Bay, fed on both Antarctic silverfish (Pleuragramma antarctica; 42.5%) and ice krill (Euphausia crystallorophias; 47%), reflecting the high biomass observed in Terra Nova Bay. Meanwhile, no significant difference was noted between the two breeding sites of the Emperor Penguin. Emperor Penguin chicks predominantly fed on Antarctic silverfish (74.5 ± 2.1%) at both breeding sites (Cape Washington and Coulman Island), suggesting that diet preference represents the main factor influencing Emperor Penguin foraging. In contrast, the diet of the Adélie Penguin reflects presumed regional differences in prey prevalence, as inferred from available survey data.

The objective of this study was to investigate the feasibility of a newly developed anticancer drug-releasing radiofrequency ablation (RFA) system in a porcine liver model. A 15-gauge drug-releasing cooled wet electrode (DRCWE) was newly developed to improve the RFA efficacy for creating a large ablation as well as for simultaneously delivering an anticancer drug to the tumor margin. Nine ablations in three pigs were performed by the DRCWE. The sectioned liver specimens were evaluated by measuring the ablation zone by a positron emission tomography/magnetic resonance imaging examination to investigate whether 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose was exactly diffused. Volumes of the ablation zones released drug injection volumes, circularity, retention rate defined as the ratio between an estimated and injection dose, and the standard uptake value were assessed. The drug-releasing RFA was technically successful without procedural-related complications. During the procedure, the color changes of the ablated zones of the liver were observed in all specimens. The mean drug injection volume was higher than the ablated volumes (17.21 ± 2.85 vs. 15.22 ± 2.30 cm3) and the circularity was 0.72 ± 0.08. Moreover, the retention rate was 72.89% ± 4.22% and the mean standard uptake value was 0.44 ± 0.05. The drug-releasing RFA system was feasible not only for local ablation but also for the delivery of anticancer drugs. The results of this study indicate that this novel strategy of localized RFA with a drug delivery system could be a promising option for the prevention of local recurrence rates.

It is difficult to guarantee optimality using the sampling-based rapidly-exploring random tree (RRT) method. To solve the problem, this paper proposes the post triangular processing of the midpoint interpolation method to minimize the planning time and shorten the path length of the sampling-based algorithm. The proposed method makes a path that is closer to the optimal path and somewhat solves the sharp path problem through the interpolation process. Experiments were conducted to verify the performance of the proposed method. Applying the method proposed in this paper to the RRT algorithm increases the efficiency of optimization by minimizing the planning time.

Background: It is unclear whether exercise would reduce dementia in patients with a new diagnosis of atrial fibrillation (AF). Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the association between the change in physical activity (PA) before and after new-onset AF and the risk of incident dementia. Methods: Using the Korean National Health Insurance Service database, we enrolled a total of 126,555 patients with newly diagnosed AF between 2010 and 2016, who underwent health examinations within two years before and after their diagnosis of AF. The patients were divided into four groups: persistent non-exercisers, exercise starters, exercise quitters, and exercise maintainers. Results: Based on a total of 396,503 person-years of follow-up, 5943 patients were diagnosed with dementia. Compared to persistent non-exercisers, exercise starters (adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) 0.87; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.81–0.94), and exercise maintainers (aHR 0.66; 95% CI 0.61–0.72) showed a lower risk of incident dementia; however, the risk was similar in exercise quitters (aHR 0.98; 95% CI 0.92–1.05) (p-trend < 0.001). There was a J-shaped relationship between the dose of exercise and the risk of dementia, with the risk reduction maximized at 5–6 times per week of moderate-to-vigorous PA among exercise starters. Conclusion: Patients who initiated or continued regular exercise after diagnosis of AF were associated with a lower risk of dementia than persistent non-exercisers, with no risk reduction associated with exercise cessation. Our findings may provide evidence for the benefit of exercise prescription to patients with new-onset AF to prevent incident dementia regardless of their current exercise status.

The high KM glucose transporter, GLUT2 (SLC2A2), is expressed by embryos and causes high rates of glucose transport during maternal hyperglycemic episodes in diabetic pregnancies and causes congenital malformations (diabetic embryopathy). GLUT2 is also a low KM transporter of the amino sugar, glucosamine (GlcN), which enters the hexosamine biosynthetic pathway (HBP) and provides substrate for glycosylation reactions. Exogenous GlcN also increases activity of the pentose phosphate pathway (PPP), which increases production of NADPH reducing equivalents. GLUT2-transported GlcN is inhibited by high glucose concentrations. Not all mouse strains are susceptible to diabetic embryopathy. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that susceptibility to diabetic embryopathy is related to differential dependence on exogenous GlcN for glycosylation or stimulation of the PPP. We tested this using murine embryonic stem cell (ESC) lines that were derived from embryopathy-susceptible FVB/NJ (FVB), and embryopathy-resistant C57Bl/6J (B6), embryos in the presence of low or high glucose, and in the presence or absence of GlcN. There were no significant differences in Glut2 expression, or of glucose or GlcN transport, between FVB and B6 ESC. GlcN effects on growth and incorporation into glycoproteins indicated that FVB ESC are more dependent on exogenous GlcN than are B6 ESC. GlcN stimulated PPP activity in FVB but not in B6 ESC. High glucose induced oxidative stress in FVB ESC but not in B6 ESC. These results indicate that FVB embryos are more dependent on exogenous GlcN for glycosylation, but also for stimulation of the PPP and NADPH production, than are B6 embryos, thereby rendering FVB embryos more susceptible to high glucose to induce oxidative stress.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of core stability exercise combined with Kinesio taping on pain, endurance, and balance in patients with lower back pain (LBP). 46 patients with LBP were recruited and randomly allocated into the core stability exercise with taping (CSET) group and the core stability exercise (CSE) group. All participants performed core stability exercises for 40 min/day, 5 times/week for 8 weeks, and additional Kinesio taping was applied to the lower backs in the CSET group. The primary outcome measure was the pain intensity using the visual analog scale, and secondary outcome measures were trunk endurance and balance using the Biering-Sorensen test and force plate, respectively. After the intervention, the CSET group showed significant improvements in pain and postural balance compared to the CSE group (p < 0.05). However, there was no significant difference in trunk endurance between two groups (p > 0.05). This study found that core stability exercise was effective in reducing pain and enhancing balance in patients with LBP, and demonstrated that the application of additional Kinesio taping further increased these effects. Therefore, we recommend that core exercise combined with Kinesio taping may be used to improve the pain and postural balance of patients with LBP in clinics.

In this study, the effect of mainstream velocity on the optimization of a fan-shaped hole on a flat plate was experimentally investigated. The experiment was conducted by changing the forward expansion angle (βfwd), lateral expansion angle (βlat), and metering length ratio (Lm/D) of the film-cooling hole. A total of 13 cases extracted using the Box–Behnken method were considered to examine the effect of the shape parameters of the film-cooling hole under a 90 m/s mainstream velocity condition, and the results were compared with the results derived under a mainstream velocity of 20 m/s. One density ratio (DR = 2.0) and a blowing ratio (M) ranging from 1.0 to 2.5 were considered, and the pressure-sensitive paint (PSP) technique was applied for the film-cooling effectiveness (FCE). As a result of the experiment, the optimized hole showed a 49.3% improvement in the overall averaged FCE compared to the reference hole with DR = 2.0 and M = 2.0. As the blowing ratio increased, the hole exit area tended to increase, and this tendency was the same as that in the 20 m/s mainstream condition.

Breast cancer is one of the major causes of deaths due to cancer, especially in women. The crucial barrier for breast cancer treatment is resistance to radiation therapy, one of the important local regional therapies. We previously established and characterized radio-resistant MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells (RT-R-MDA-MB-231 cells) that harbor a high expression of cancer stem cells (CSCs) and the EMT phenotype. In this study, we performed antibody array analysis to identify the hub signaling mechanism for the radiation resistance of RT-R-MDA-MB-231 cells by comparing parental MDA-MB-231 (p-MDA-MB-231) and RT-R-MDA-MB-231 cells. Antibody array analysis unveiled that the MAPK1 protein was the most upregulated protein in RT-R-MDA-MB-231 cells compared to in p-MDA-MB-231 cells. The pathway enrichment analysis also revealed the presence of MAPK1 in almost all enriched pathways. Thus, we used an MEK/ERK inhibitor, PD98059, to block the MEK/ERK pathway and to identify the role of MAPK1 in the radio-resistance of RT-R-MDA-MB-231 cells. MEK/ERK inhibition induced cell death in both p-MDA-MB-231 and RT-R-MDA-MB-231 cells, but the death mechanism for each cell was different; p-MDA-MB-231 cells underwent apoptosis, showing cell shrinkage and PARP-1 cleavage, while RT-R-MDA-MB-231 cells underwent necroptosis, showing mitochondrial dissipation, nuclear swelling, and an increase in the expressions of CypA and AIF. In addition, MEK/ERK inhibition reversed the radio-resistance of RT-R-MDA-MB-231 cells and suppressed the increased expression of CSC markers (CD44 and OCT3/4) and the EMT phenotype (β-catenin and N-cadherin/E-cadherin). Taken together, this study suggests that activated ERK signaling is one of the major hub signals related to the radio-resistance of MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells.

A non-contact tactile stimulation system using a time-varying magnetic field was developed. The system comprises a control unit, power unit, output unit, and actuator. The control unit adjusts stimulation parameters, particularly the signal intensity and frequency. The power unit produces high voltages for generating the magnetic field, whereas the output unit transmits the energy generated according to the signal from the control unit to the actuator. A spiral coil actuator generates the magnetic field. To validate the effectiveness of the system, preliminary experiments on 10 male adults without neurological disorders (23.2 ± 3.05 years) were conducted. Magnetic field stimuli were presented to the right palm of the subjects at three different frequencies (10, 30, and 50 Hz), and corresponding electroencephalogram (EEG) signals were measured simultaneously. Event-related potential (ERP) analysis showed that N100 and P300 components were identified in somatosensory areas. Subjective evaluations revealed that feelings such as “tingling,” “trembling,” “tapping,” and “percussing” were induced. Moreover, as the stimulus frequency changes, differences may occur in induced feeling. The system uses a time-varying magnetic field, which not only induces tactile stimulation without contact but also has trans-object characteristics that can present tactile sensations, even when there is an obstacle between an actuator and skin.

Limited data are available regarding the impact of smoking cessation after atrial fibrillation (AF) diagnosis on clinical outcomes. Using the Korean National Health Insurance Service database, we included patients newly diagnosed with AF and categorized them into four groups as follows: (i) never smokers, (ii) ex-smokers, (iii) smoking cessation after AF diagnosis (“quitters”), and (iv) current smokers. The primary outcomes were incident ischemic stroke and all-cause death during follow-up. Fatal ischemic stroke and death from cerebrovascular events were evaluated as secondary outcomes. Among 97,637 patients (mean age, 61 years; mean CHA2DS2-VASc score, 2.3), 6.9% stopped smoking after AF diagnosis. The mean follow-up duration was 3.2 ± 2.0 years. After multivariable adjustment, quitters had lower risks of ischemic stroke (hazard ratio (HR), 0.702; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.595–0.827) and all-cause death (HR, 0.842; 95% CI, 0.748–0.948) than current smokers. Quitters after AF diagnosis were associated with lower risks of fatal ischemic stroke (HR, 0.454; 95% CI, 0.287–0.718) and death from cerebrovascular events (HR, 0.664; 95% CI, 0.465–0.949) compared with current smokers. Quitting smoking may reduce the risk of ischemic stroke, the severity of ischemic stroke, and the incidence of cerebrovascular events in patients with new-onset AF.

This study aims to use functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to assess the effective connectivity between the regions of the brain activated when driving and performing a secondary task (addition task). The subjects used an MR-compatible driving simulator ㅊ to manipulate the driving wheel with both hands and control the pedals (accelerator and brake) with their right foot as if they were driving in an actual environment. Effective connectivity analysis was performed for three regions of the right and the left hemispheres with the highest z-scores, and six of the regions of the entire brain (right and left hemisphere) activated during driving by dynamic causal modeling (DCM). In the right hemisphere, a motor control pathway related to movement control for driving performance was discovered; in the left hemisphere, the pathways in the regions related to movement control for driving performance, starting with the region associated with the secondary task, were discovered. In the whole brain, connectivity was discovered in each of the right and left hemispheres. The motor network of declarative memory, which is the connectivity of the right thalamus, left lingual gyrus, and right precentral gyrus, was worth noting. These results seem meaningful, as they demonstrate the connectivity associated with the control of voluntary movement related to memory from human experience, although limited to driving tasks.

Objective: Pelvic alignment asymmetry in stroke patients negatively affects postural control ability. This study aimed to investigate the effect of posterior pelvic tilt taping on pelvic inclination, muscle strength, and gait ability in stroke patients. Methods: Forty stroke patients were recruited and randomly divided into the following two groups: the posterior pelvic tilt taping (PPTT) group (n = 20) and the control group (n = 20). All participants underwent sitting-to-standing, indoor walking, and stair walking training (30 min per day, 5 days per week, for 6 weeks). The PPTT group applied posterior pelvic tilt taping during the training period, while the control group did not receive a tape intervention. Pelvic inclination was measured using a palpation meter (PALM). A hand-held dynamometer and the 10-meter walk test were used to measure muscle strength and gait ability. Results: Significantly greater improvements in the pelvic anterior tilt were observed in the PPTT group than in the control group (p < 0.05). Muscle strength in the PPTT group was significantly increased compared to the control group (p < 0.05). Significantly greater improvements in gait speed were observed in the PPTT group than the control group. Conclusions: According to our results, posterior pelvic tilt taping may be used to improve the anterior pelvic inclination, muscle strength, and gait ability in stroke patients.

Background and Objectives: Spasticity is one of the factors that make it more difficult to control posture in stroke patients. Taping has been used to manage muscle stiffness in various musculoskeletal disorders. Recently, it has been used to decrease spasticity in stroke patients, but the effect of taping combined with therapeutic exercise is still unclear. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether the sit-to-stand (STS) training combined with taping improves the ankle spasticity, muscle strength, gait speed, and quality of life in stroke patients. Material and Methods: The study recruited 40 stroke patients, who were randomly divided into two groups: the taping and STS training (TSTS) group (n = 20) and the STS group (n = 20). The subjects in the TSTS group underwent STS training with Kinesio taping on the tibialis anterior, calf and ankle joint, whereas the subjects in the STS group underwent only STS training. All participants underwent 30 sessions of STS training (30 minutes, 5 days per week for 6 weeks). The present study evaluated the spasticity of ankle plantar flexors by the mean of the composite spasticity score; the muscle strength and gait speed were evaluated using the handheld dynamometer and the 10-meter walk test, respectively, and the quality of life was assessed using the stroke-specific quality of life scale. Result: The TSTS group and the STS group showed significant improvements in spasticity, muscle strength, walking speed, and quality of life after the intervention (p < 0.05). The level of improvement in the TSTS group was significantly higher in spasticity, muscle strength, and walking speed compared to the STS group (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The present study demonstrated that STS training is effective for decreasing spasticity in stroke patients and suggested that additional taping intervention further improved this effect. In addition, improvement of muscle strength and gait function was observed with a significant decrease of ankle spasticity.

This study aimed to compare the cognitive performance and event-related potential (ERP) patterns between females who have given birth (parous) and those who have not (nulliparous). A total of 50 female participants, including 27 who were parous (33.2 ± 3.2 years) and 23 who were nulliparous (30.8 ± 2.3 years), were recruited. Only parous females who were ≤36 months postpartum (17.7 ± 8.1 months) were included. To compare the cognitive performance between the two groups, we presented the 3-back task (a working memory task) and compared the accuracy rate (%) and reaction time (ms) between the groups. Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals were simultaneously recorded and the ERP patterns at Fz, Cz, and Pz, which are highly associated with the 3-back task, were analyzed. From the ERP patterns, we extracted N100, P300, P600, P300 peak-to-peak (P300p_p), and P600 peak-to-peak (P600p_p). There were no significant between-group differences in terms of accuracy rate, reaction time, or ERP components (N100, P300, P600, P300p_p, or P600p_p) at the three sites (Fz, Cz, and Pz). Since this study, using meaningful objective data, did not show that parity was significantly correlated with cognitive performance ability and ERP patterns, childbirth does not appear to influence cognitive decline.

We investigated whether longitudinal patterns in antithrombotic therapy have changed after the introduction of non-vitamin K oral anticoagulants (NOACs) in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Using a claims database of the Korean AF population who underwent PCI between 2012 and 2016 (n = 18,691), we analyzed prescription records of oral anticoagulants (OACs) and antiplatelets at 3-month intervals over 2 years after PCI. The study population was stratified (pre-NOAC, transition, and NOAC era) using time-periods of NOAC introduction in Korea and an expansion of reimbursement for NOAC in AF as indicators. The overall rates of OAC were low at baseline (24.9%, 26.9%, and 35.2% in pre-NOAC, transition, and NOAC era, respectively), contrary to high rates of dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) (73.3%, 71.4%, and 63.6%). However, OAC prescription rates were increased at 1-year (18.5%, 22.5%, and 31.6%), and 2-year follow-up (17.8%, 24.2%, and 31.8%) from pre-NOAC to NOAC era. In NOAC era, 63.5% of baseline OAC prescriptions comprised NOAC, of which 96.4% included triple therapy with DAPT. Over 2 years, we observed increasing rates of double therapy with a single antiplatelet (18.3% and 20.0% at 1- and 2-year follow-up) and OAC monotherapy (2.7% and 8.9% at 1- and 2-year follow-up).

Obesity has become a pandemic. It is one of the strongest risk-factors of new-onset chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, the effects of obesity and abdominal obesity on the risk of developing CKD in young adults has not been elucidated. From a nationwide health screening database, we included 3,030,884 young adults aged 20–39 years without CKD during a baseline examination in 2009–2010, who could follow up during 2013–2016. Patients were stratified into five levels based on their baseline body mass index (BMI) and six levels based on their waist circumference (WC; 5-cm increments). The primary outcome was the development of CKD. During the follow up, until 2016, 5853 (0.19%) participants developed CKD. Both BMI and WC showed a U-shaped relationship with CKD risk, identifying the cut-off values as a BMI of 21 and WC of 72 cm in young adults. The obesity group (odd ratio [OR] = 1.320, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.247–1.397) and abdominal obesity group (male WC ≥ 90, female WC ≥ 85) (OR = 1.208, 95%CI: 1.332–1.290) showed a higher CKD risk than the non-obesity or non-abdominal obesity groups after adjusting for covariates. In the CKD risk by obesity composite, the obesity displayed by the abdominal obesity group showed the highest CKD risk (OR = 1.502, 95%CI: 1.190–1.895), especially in those under 30 years old. During subgroup analysis, the diabetes mellitus (DM) group with obesity or abdominal obesity paradoxically showed a lower CKD risk compared with the non-obesity or non-abdominal obesity group. Obesity and abdominal obesity are associated with increased risk of developing CKD in young adults but a decreased risk in young adults with diabetes.

To investigate the impact of burning postharvest crop residues in home stoves, PM2.5 samples (particulate matter with a diameter of 3 during the sampling period. The average mannosan/levoglucosan ratio (0.18) at the rural site during a severe BB episode (levoglucosan > 1 μg/m3) was similar to burnings of pepper stems (0.19) and bean stems (0.18) whereas the average OC/levoglucosan ratio (9.9) was similar to burning of pepper stems (10.0), implying that the severe BB episode was mainly attributed to burning of pepper stems. A very strong correlation was observed between levoglucosan and organic carbon (OC) (R2 = 0.81) during the entire sampling period, suggesting that the emission of organic aerosols at the rural site was strongly associated with the burning of crop residues in home stoves. The average mannosan/levoglucosan ratio (0.17 ± 0.06) in the rural area was similar to that in a nearby urban area in Daejeon (0.16 ± 0.04). It was concluded that crop residue burning in a home stove for space heating is one of the important sources of carbonaceous aerosols not only in a rural area but also in the urban area of Daejeon, Korea during the postharvest season.

Genetic diversity analysis and cultivar identification were performed using a core set of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.). For the genetic diversity study, 280 cucumber accessions collected from four continents (Asia, Europe, America, and Africa) by the National Agrobiodiversity Center of the Rural Development Administration in South Korea and 20 Korean commercial F1 hybrids were genotyped using 151 Fluidigm SNP assay sets. The heterozygosity of the SNP loci per accession ranged from 4.76 to 82.76%, with an average of 32.1%. Population genetics analysis was performed using population structure analysis and hierarchical clustering (HC), which indicated that these accessions were classified mainly into four subpopulations or clusters according to their geographical origins. The subpopulations for Asian and European accessions were clearly distinguished from each other (FST value = 0.47), while the subpopulations for Korean F1 hybrids and Asian accessions were closely related (FST = 0.34). The highest differentiation was observed between American and European accessions (FST = 0.41). Nei’s genetic distance among the 280 accessions was 0.414 on average. In addition, 95 commercial F1 hybrids of three cultivar groups (Baekdadagi-, Gasi-, and Nakhap-types) were genotyped using 82 Fluidigm SNP assay sets for cultivar identification. These 82 SNPs differentiated all cultivars, except seven. The heterozygosity of the SNP loci per cultivar ranged from 12.20 to 69.14%, with an average of 34.2%. Principal component analysis and HC demonstrated that most cultivars were clustered based on their cultivar groups. The Baekdadagi- and Gasi-types were clearly distinguished, while the Nakhap-type was closely related to the Baekdadagi-type. Our results obtained using core Fluidigm SNP assay sets provide useful information for germplasm assessment and cultivar identification, which are essential for breeding and intellectual right protection in cucumber.

The relationship between microstructures and ductility parameters, including reduction of area, elongation to failure, occurrence of delamination, and number of turns to failure in torsion, in hypereutectoid pearlitic steel wires was investigated. The transformed steel wires at 620 °C were successively dry-drawn to drawing strains from 0.40 to 2.38. To examine the effects of hot-dip galvanizing conditions, post-deformation annealing was performed on cold drawn steel wires (ε = 0.99, 1.59, and 2.38) with a different heating time of 30–3600 s at 500 °C in a salt bath. In cold drawn wires, elongation to failure dropped due to the formation of dislocation substructures, decreased slowly due to the increase of dislocation density, and saturated with drawing strain. During annealing, elongation to failure increased due to recovery, and saturated with annealing time. The variation of elongation to failure in cold drawn and annealed steel wires would depend on the distribution of dislocations in lamellar ferrite. The orientation of lamellar cementite and the shape of cementite particles would become an effective factor controlling number of turns to failure in torsion of cold drawn and annealed steel wires. The orientation and shape of lamellar cementite would become microstructural features controlling reduction of area of cold drawn and annealed steel wires. The density of dislocations contributed to reduction of area to some extent.
