Recently, interest in polyphenol-containing composite adhesives for various biomedical applications has been growing. Tannic acid (TA) is a polyphenolic compound with advantageous properties, including antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. Additionally, TA contains multiple hydroxyl groups that exhibit biological activity by forming hydrogen bonds with proteins and biomacromolecules. Furthermore, TA-containing polymer composites exhibit excellent tissue adhesion properties. In this study, the gelation behavior and adhesion forces of TA/Pluronic F127 (TA/PluF) composite hydrogels were investigated by varying the TA and PluF concentrations. PluF (above 16 wt%) alone showed temperature-responsive gelation behavior because of the closely packed micelle aggregates. After the addition of a small amount of TA, the TA/PluF hydrogels showed thermosensitive behavior similar to that of PluF hydrogels. However, the TA/PluF hydrogels containing more than 10 wt% TA completely suppressed the thermo-responsive gelation kinetics of PluF, which may have been due to the hydrogen bonds between TA and PluF. In addition, TA/PluF hydrogels with 40 wt% TA showed excellent tissue adhesion properties and bursting pressure in porcine intestinal tissues. These results are expected to aid in understanding the use of mixtures of TA and thermosensitive block copolymers to fabricate adhesive hydrogels for versatile biomedical applications.

Hydrogen can be produced in undesired ways such as a high temperature metal oxidation during an accident. In this case, the hydrogen must be carefully managed. A hydrogen mitigation system (HMS) should be installed to protect a containment of a nuclear power plant (NPP) from hazards of hydrogen produced by an oxidation of the fuel cladding during a severe accident in an NPP. Among hydrogen removal devices, passive auto-catalytic recombiners (PARs) are currently applied to many NPPs because of passive characteristics, such as not requiring a power supply nor an operators’ manipulations. However, they offer several disadvantages, resulting in issues related to hydrogen control by PARs. One of the issues is a hydrogen stratification in which hydrogen is not well-mixed in a compartment due to the high temperature exhaust gas of PARs and accumulation in the lower part. Therefore, experimental simulation on hydrogen stratification phenomenon by PARs is required. When the hydrogen stratification by PARs is observed in the experiment, the verification and improvement of a PAR analysis model using the experimental results can be performed, and the hydrogen removal characteristics by PARs installed in an NPP can be evaluated using the improved PAR model.

Polycrystalline bulks of Hf-doped Cu0.01Bi2Te2.7Se0.3 are prepared via a conventional melt-solidification process and subsequent spark plasma sintering technology, and their thermoelectric performances are evaluated. To elucidate the effect of Hf-doping on the thermoelectric properties of n-type Cu0.01Bi2Te2.7Se0.3, electronic and thermal transport parameters are estimated from the measured data. An enlarged density-of-states effective mass (from ~0.92 m0 to ~1.24 m0) is obtained due to the band modification, and the power factor is improved by Hf-doping benefitting from the increase in carrier concentration while retaining carrier mobility. Additionally, lattice thermal conductivity is reduced due to the intensified point defect phonon scattering that originated from the mass difference between Bi and Hf. Resultantly, a peak thermoelectric figure of merit zT of 0.83 is obtained at 320 K for Cu0.01Bi1.925Hf0.075Te2.7Se0.3, which is a ~12% enhancement compared to that of the pristine Cu0.01Bi2Te2.7Se0.3.

Herein we report a significantly reduced lattice thermal conductivity of Sb-doped Hf0.35Zr0.35Ti0.3NiSn half-Heusler alloys with sub-micron grains (grain size of ~300 nm). Polycrystalline bulks of Hf0.35Zr0.35Ti0.3NiSn1−xSbx (x = 0.01, 0.02, 0.03) with a complete single half-Heusler phase are prepared using temperature-regulated melt spinning and subsequent spark plasma sintering without a long annealing process. In these submicron-grained bulks, a very low lattice thermal conductivity value of ~2.4 W m−1 K−1 is obtained at 300 K due to the intensified phonon scatterings by highly dense grain boundaries and point-defects (Zr and Ti substituted at Hf-sites). A maximum thermoelectric figure of merit, zT, of 0.5 at 800 K is obtained in Hf0.35Zr0.35Ti0.3NiSn0.99Sb0.01.

Grounding is a therapeutic technique that involves doing activities that “ground” or electrically reconnect us to the earth. The physiological effects of grounding have been reported from a variety of perspectives such as sleep or pain. However, its anti-stress efficacy is relatively unknown. The present study investigated the stress-related behavioral effects of earthing mat and its neurohormonal mechanisms in the Sprague–Dawley male rat. Rats were randomly divided into four groups: the naïve normal (Normal), the 21 days immobilization stressed (Control), the 21 days stressed + earthing mat for 7 days (A7) or 21 days (A21) group. The depressive-and anxiety like behaviors were measured by forced swimming test (FST), tail suspension test (TST) and elevated plus maze (EPM). Using immunohistochemistry, the expression of corticotrophin-releasing factor (CRF) and c-Fos immunoreactivity were analyzed in the brain. In the EPM, time spent in the open arm of the earthing mat groups was significantly increased compared to the Control group (p < 0.001), even though there were without effects among groups in the FST and TST. The expression of CRF immunoreactive neurons in the earthing mat group was markedly decreased compared to the Control group. Overall, the earthing mat reduced stress-induced behavioral changes and expression of c-Fos and CRF immunoreactivity in the brain. These results suggest that the earthing mat may have the potential to improve stress-related responses via the regulation of the corticotrophinergic system.

Class III peroxidases (PRXs) are involved in a broad spectrum of physiological and developmental processes throughout the life cycle of plants. However, the specific function of each PRX member in the family remains largely unknown. In this study, we selected four class III peroxidase genes ( PRX2 / ATPRX1 , PRX8 , PRX35 , and PRX73 ) from a previous genome-wide transcriptome analysis, and performed phenotypic and morphological analyses, including histochemical staining, in PRX2RNAi , PRX8RNAi , PRX35RNAi , and PRX73RNAi plants. The reduced mRNA levels of corresponding PRX genes in PRX2RNAi , PRX8RNAi , PRX35RNAi , and PRX73RNAi seedlings resulted in elongated hypocotyls and roots, and slightly faster vegetative growth. To investigate internal structural changes in the vasculature, we performed histochemical staining, which revealed alterations in cell wall structures in the main vasculature of hypocotyls, stems, and roots of each PRXRNAi plant compared to wild-type (Col-0) plants. Furthermore, we found that PRX35RNAi plants displayed the decrease in the cell wall in vascular regions, which are involved in downregulation of lignin biosynthesis and biosynthesis-regulated genes' expression. Taken together, these results indicated that the reduced expression levels of PRX2 / ATPRX1 , PRX8 , PRX35 , and PRX73 affected hypocotyl and root elongation, vegetative growth, and the vasculature structures in hypocotyl, stem, and root tissues, suggesting that the four class III PRX genes play roles in plant developmental processes.
