Cerium dioxide sols stabilised with L-malic acid were shown to exhibit significant antioxidant activity towards alkyl peroxyl radicals in the range of ligand:CeO 2 molar ratios of 0.2-1 (0.2:1, 0.4:1, 0.5:1, 0.6:1, 0.8:1 and 1:1). The antioxidant activity of cerium dioxide nanoparticles greatly depended on L-malic acid content and increased by 8 times when the ligand:CeO 2 molar ratio increased from 0.2:1 to 0.4:1. An estimate of the ligand:CeO 2 molar ratio required to ensure complete surface coverage of CeO 2 nanoparticles with malate anions resulted in a value of 0.2. Aggregation degree of CeO 2 nanoparticles depends on the ligand:CeO 2 molar ratio. In the range of ligand:CeO 2 molar ratios 0.2-0.4, the size of aggregates decreased by an order of magnitude. The antioxidant capacity of 1 mM malate-stabilised cerium dioxide (0.2:1) relative to sodium ascorbate was 0.012 ± 0.001 mM. The antioxidant activity of cerium dioxide stabilised with L-malic acid at a ligand:CeO 2 molar ratio of 0.2:1 was 80 times less than the antioxidant activity of sodium ascorbate. Cerium dioxide nanoparticles stabilised with L-malic acid did not demonstrate a cytotoxic effect against human mesenchymal stem cells, in a wide range of concentrations (10 -3 -10 -5 M), and their proliferation was stimulated after 72 h of cultivation. The results obtained show new possibilities for the design of biocompatible ceria-based nanomaterials with tunable pro- and antioxidant properties; these materials can further be assessed in view of their potential for treating oxidative stress-related disorders.

Their unique physicochemical properties and multi-enzymatic activity make CeO 2 nanoparticles (CeO 2 NPs) the most promising active component of the next generation of theranostic drugs. When doped with gadolinium ions, CeO 2 NPs constitute a new type of contrast agent for magnetic resonance imaging, possessing improved biocatalytic properties and a high level of biocompatibility. The present study is focused on an in-depth analysis of the enzyme-like properties of gadolinium-doped CeO 2 NPs (CeO 2 :Gd NPs) and their antioxidant activity against superoxide anion radicals, hydrogen peroxide, and alkylperoxyl radicals. Using an anion-exchange method, CeO 2 :Gd NPs (~5 nm) with various Gd-doping levels (10 mol.% or 20 mol.%) were synthesized. The radical-scavenging properties and biomimetic activities (namely SOD- and peroxidase-like activities) of CeO 2 :Gd NPs were assessed using a chemiluminescent method with selective chemical probes: luminol, lucigenin, and L-012 (a highly sensitive luminol analogue). In particular, gadolinium doping has been shown to enhance the radical-scavenging properties of CeO 2 NPs. Unexpectedly, both bare CeO 2 NPs and CeO 2 :Gd NPs did not exhibit SOD-like activity, acting as pro-oxidants and contributing to the generation of reactive oxygen species. Gadolinium doping caused an increase in the pro-oxidant properties of nanoscale CeO 2 . At the same time, CeO 2 :Gd NPs did not significantly inhibit the intrinsic activity of the natural enzyme superoxide dismutase, and CeO 2 :Gd NPs conjugated with SOD demonstrated SOD-like activity. In contrast to SOD-like properties, peroxidase-like activity was observed for both bare CeO 2 NPs and CeO 2 :Gd NPs. This type of enzyme-like activity was found to be pH-dependent. In a neutral medium (pH = 7.4), nanoscale CeO 2 acted as a prooxidant enzyme (peroxidase), while in an alkaline medium (pH = 8.6), it lost its catalytic properties; thus, it cannot be regarded as a nanozyme. Both gadolinium doping and conjugation with a natural enzyme were shown to modulate the interaction of CeO 2 NPs with the key components of redox homeostasis.

Textiles and nonwovens (including those used in ventilation systems as filters) are currently one of the main sources of patient cross-infection. Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) affect 5-10% of patients and stand as the tenth leading cause of death. Therefore, the development of new methods for creating functional nanostructured coatings with antibacterial and antiviral properties on the surfaces of textiles and nonwoven materials is crucial for modern medicine. Antimicrobial filter technology must be high-speed, low-energy and safe if its commercialization and mass adoption are to be successful. Cerium oxide nanoparticles can act as active components in these coatings due to their high antibacterial activity and low toxicity. This paper focuses on the elaboration of a high-throughput and resource-saving method for the deposition of cerium oxide nanoparticles onto nonwoven fibrous material for use in air-conditioning filters. The proposed spraying technique is based on the use of an aerodynamic emitter and simultaneous suction. Cerium oxide nanoparticles have successfully been deposited onto the filter materials used in air conditioning systems; the antibacterial activity of the ceria-modified filters exceeded 4.0.

This paper reports the results of the large-scale field testing of composite materials with antibacterial properties in a tropical climate. The composite materials, based on a cotton fabric with a coating of metal oxide nanoparticles (TiO2 and/or ZnO), were produced using high-power ultrasonic treatment. The antibacterial properties of the materials were studied in laboratory tests on solid and liquid nutrient media using bacteria of different taxonomic groups (Escherichia coli, Chromobacterium violaceum, Pseudomonas chlororaphis). On solid media, the coatings were able to achieve a >50% decrease in the number of bacteria. The field tests were carried out in a tropical climate, at the Climate test station “Hoa Lac” (Hanoi city, Vietnam). The composite materials demonstrated long-term antibacterial activity in the tropical climate: the number of microorganisms remained within the range of 1−3% in comparison with the control sample for the duration of the experiment (3 months). Ten of the microorganisms that most frequently occurred on the surface of the coated textiles were identified. The bacteria were harmless, while the fungi were pathogenic and contributed to fabric deterioration. Tensile strength deterioration was also studied, with the fabrics coated with metal oxides demonstrating a better preservation of their mechanical characteristics over time, (there was a 42% tensile strength decrease for the reference non-coated sample and a 21% decrease for the sample with a ZnO + CTAB coating).

We studied the toxic effects of cerium and fluoride species on human dental pulp stem cells and epithelial cells of Cercopithecus aethiops as a surrogate for the human oral mucosa. The sequential use of CeCl 3 and NH 4 F solutions in equimolar sub-toxic concentrations enabled the possible toxic effects of individual components to be avoided, ensuring the preservation of the metabolic activity of the cells due to the formation of CeF 3 nanoparticles. Cerium fluoride nanoparticles and terbium-doped cerium fluoride nanoparticles exhibited neither cytotoxicity nor genotoxicity to dental pulp stem cells, even at high concentrations (10 -4 M). In millimolar concentrations (from 10 -5 -10 -6 M), these nanoparticles significantly increased the expression of genes responsible for the cell cycle, differentiation and proliferation. The formation of cerium fluoride on the surface of the mucous membrane and teeth provided protection against the development of carious lesions, periodontitis, ROS attacks and other inflammatory diseases of the oral cavity. Luminescent CeF 3 : Tb nanoparticles enabled the visualization of tooth enamel microcracks.

The acylation of unsymmetrical N -benzylbispidinols in aromatic solvents without an external base led to the formation of supramolecular gels, which possess different thicknesses and degrees of stability depending on the substituents in para-positions of the benzylic group as well as on the nature of the acylating agent and of the solvent used. Structural features of the native gels as well as of their dried forms were studied by complementary techniques including Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) and attenuated total reflection (ATR) spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and small-angle X-ray scattering and diffraction (SAXS). Structures of the key crystalline compounds were established by X-ray diffraction. An analysis of the obtained data allowed speculation on the crucial structural and condition factors that governed the gel formation. The most important factors were as follows: (i) absence of base, either external or internal; (ii) presence of HCl; (iii) presence of carbonyl and hydroxyl groups to allow hydrogen bonding; and (iv) presence of two (hetero)aromatic rings at both sides of the molecule. The hydrogen bonding involving amide carbonyl, hydroxyl at position 9, and, very probably, ammonium N-H⁺ and Cl - anion appears to be responsible for the formation of infinite molecular chains required for the first step of gel formation. Subsequent lateral cooperation of molecular chains into fibers occurred, presumably, due to the aromatic π-π-stacking interactions. Supercritical carbon dioxide drying of the organogels gave rise to aerogels with morphologies different from that of air-dried samples.
