This paper analyzes anti-corruption research and the body of knowledge produced by researchers in Southeast Europe (SEE). It compares it to the extant global anti-corruption literature. We consider all available scientific outputs from the SEE region, indexed by the Elsevier Scopus bibliometric database, and employ the Elsevier SciVal software solution to analyze the productivity and impact of the regional anti-corruption research. We also consider the influence of international cooperation on regional scientific productivity and its impact. The bibliometric comparison of the global and regional research and the authors’ qualitative assessment of these differences are performed. We also identify the implications and future research priorities.

Raman spectroscopy is a powerful analytical technique based on the inelastic scattering of photons. Conventional macro-Raman spectrometers are suitable for mass analysis but often lack the spatial resolution required to accurately examine microscopic regions of interest. For this reason, the development of micro-Raman spectrometers has been driven forward. However, even with micro-Raman spectrometers, high resolution is required to gain better insight into materials that provide low-intensity Raman signals. Here, we show the development of a micro-Raman spectrometer with implemented zoom lens technology. We found that by replacing a second collimating mirror in the monochromator with a zoom lens, the spectral resolution could be continuously adjusted at different zoom factors, i.e., high resolution was achieved at a higher zoom factor and lower spectral resolution was achieved at a lower zoom factor. A quantitative analysis of a micro-Raman spectrometer was performed and the spectral resolution was analysed by FWHM using the Gaussian fit. Validation was also performed by comparing the results obtained with those of a high-grade laboratory Raman spectrometer. A quantitative analysis was also performed using the ANOVA method and by assessing the signal-to-noise ratio between the two systems.

This paper investigates the detection of broken rotor bar in squirrel cage induction motors using a novel approach of randomly positioning a triaxial sensor over the motor surface. This study is conducted on two motors under laboratory conditions, where one motor is kept in a healthy state, and the other is subjected to a broken rotor bar (BRB) fault. The induced electromotive force of the triaxial coils, recorded over ten days with 100 measurements per day, is statistically analyzed. Normality tests and graphical interpretation methods are used to evaluate the data distribution. Parametric and non-parametric approaches are used to analyze the data. Both approaches show that the measurement method is valid and consistent over time and statistically distinguishes healthy motors from those with BRB defects when a reference or threshold value is specified. While the comparison between healthy motors shows a discrepancy, the quantitative analysis shows a smaller estimated difference in mean values between healthy motors than comparing healthy and BRB motors.

Background: Recurrent wheezing and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) are common in young children, with a suggested but challenging link between them. This study aimed to investigate the diagnostic value of pH-MII monitoring in preschool children with recurrent wheezing and evaluate GERD-related therapy effects. Methods: Children under 6 years with recurrent wheeze were eligible. The pH-MII monitoring was conducted in those clinically suspected of GERD’s involvement. Flexible bronchoscopy with bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) was performed in severe cases. The primary outcome was the difference in wheezing episodes between proven GERD and non-GERD groups. Secondary outcomes included GERD therapy impact and predictive factors for wheezing reduction. Results: Of 66 children (mean age 3.9 years), 71% had proven GERD on pH-MII. Compared to the non-GERD group, the GERD group had higher total, liquid, mixed, and gas reflux episodes, as well as more acidic and weakly acidic episodes. GERD treatment significantly reduced wheezing episodes. PPI (proton pump inhibitor) introduction was associated with ≥50% wheezing reduction. Children with GERD showed ≥50% wheezing reduction more frequently than those without GERD. PPI usage, higher total GER episodes, acidic episodes, and liquid and proximal episodes on MII predicted ≥50% wheezing reduction. No significant BAL differences were observed between GERD and non-GERD groups. Conclusions: The pH-MII monitoring is valuable in diagnosing GERD-related wheezing in preschool children. GERD therapy, particularly PPI usage, was associated with reduced wheezing episodes. The pH-MII parameters correlated with wheezing reduction, suggesting their potential predictive role. BAL did not differentiate between GERD and non-GERD cases.

The concept of weakly hard real-time systems can be used to model real-time systems that may tolerate occasional deadline misses in a bounded and predictable manner. This model applies to many practical applications and is particularly interesting in the context of real-time control systems. In practice, applying hard real-time constraints may be too rigid since a certain amount of deadline misses is acceptable in some applications. In order to maintain system stability, limitations on the amount and distribution of violated deadlines need to be imposed. These limitations can be formally expressed as weakly hard real-time constraints. Current research in the field of weakly hard real-time task scheduling is focused on designing scheduling algorithms that guarantee the fulfillment of constraints, while aiming to maximize the total number of timely completed task instances. This paper provides an extensive literature review of the work related to the weakly hard real-time system model and its link to the field of control systems design. The weakly hard real-time system model and the corresponding scheduling problem are described. Furthermore, an overview of system models derived from the generalized weakly hard real-time system model is provided, with an emphasis on models that apply to real-time control systems. The state-of-the-art algorithms for scheduling tasks with weakly hard real-time constraints are described and compared. Finally, an overview of controller design methods that rely on the weakly hard real-time model is given.

This paper assesses the profitability of battery storage systems (BSS) by focusing on the internal rate of return (IRR) as a profitability measure which offers advantages over other frequently used measures, most notably the net present value (NPV). Furthermore, this study proposes a multi-objective optimisation (MOO) approach to IRR estimation instead of relying on the simple linear optimisation and compares the results to the popular linear optimisation with battery cycle-cost penalty. The analysis is conducted under perfect foresight conditions by considering multiple revenue streams: arbitrage trading in the day-ahead and intraday markets, peak shaving, participating in the primary reserves market, and from photovoltaic (PV) power-generation unit. Data are collected for the German power market for 2017 and 2021. The results show that MOO approach yields similar IRR estimates to the cycle-cost model in 2017. However, higher market volatility and increased electricity prices in 2021 resulted in tangible differences. The analysis shows that, if such conditions are coupled with a low battery capacity price, the MOO method significantly outperforms the cycle-cost model. The effects of battery calendar lifetime and state of charge which decrease profitability are also considered. Nevertheless, a noticeable rise in profitability in 2021 relative to 2017 could provide enough compensation to address the issue of relatively poor viability track record.

Raman and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy are important analytic tools in materials science that yield information on molecules’ and crystals’ vibrational and electronic properties. Here, we show results of a novel approach for Raman and PL spectroscopy to exploit variable spectral resolution by using zoom optics in a monochromator in the front of the detector. Our results show that the spectral intervals of interest can be recorded with different zoom factors, significantly reducing the acquisition time and changing the spectral resolution for different zoom factors. The smallest spectral intervals recorded at the maximum zoom factor yield higher spectral resolution suitable for Raman spectra. In contrast, larger spectral intervals recorded at the minimum zoom factor yield the lowest spectral resolution suitable for luminescence spectra. We have demonstrated the change in spectral resolution by zoom objective with a zoom factor of 6, but the perspective of such an approach is up to a zoom factor of 20. We have compared such an approach on the prototype Raman spectrometer with the high quality commercial one. The comparison was made on ZrO2 and TiO2 nanocrystals for Raman scattering and Al2O3 for PL emission recording. Beside demonstrating that Raman spectrometer can be used for PL and Raman spectroscopy without changing of grating, our results show that such a spectrometer could be an efficient and fast tool in searching for Raman and PL bands of unknown materials and, thereafter, spectral recording of the spectral interval of interest at an appropriate spectral resolution.

Battery energy storage is becoming an important asset in modern power systems. Considering the market prices and battery storage characteristics, reserve provision is a tempting play fields for such assets. This paper aims at filling the gap by developing a mathematically rigorous model and applying it to the existing and future electricity market design in Europe. The paper presents a bilevel model for optimal battery storage participation in day-ahead energy market as a price taker, and reserve capacity and activation market as a price maker. It uses an accurate battery charging model to reliably represent the behavior of real-life lithium-ion battery storage. The proposed bilevel model is converted into a mixed-integer linear program by using the Karush–Kuhn–Tucker optimality conditions. The case study uses real-life data on reserve capacity and activation costs and quantities in German markets. The reserves activation quantities and activation prices are modeled by a set of credible scenarios in the lower-level problem. Finally, a sensitivity analysis is conducted to comprehend to what extent do battery storage bidding prices affect its overall profit.

Battery energy storage systems (BESS) and renewable energy sources are complementary technologies from the power system viewpoint, where renewable energy sources behave as flexibility sinks and create business opportunities for BESS as flexibility sources. Various stakeholders can use BESS to balance, stabilize and flatten demand/generation patterns. These applications depend on the stakeholder role, flexibility service needed from the battery, market opportunities and obstacles, as well as regulatory aspects encouraging or hindering integration of storage technologies. While developed countries are quickly removing barriers and increasing the integration share of BESS, this is seldom the case in developing countries. The paper identifies multiple case opportunities for different power system stakeholders in Croatia, models potential BESS applications using real-world case studies, analyzes feasibility of these investments, and discusses financial returns and barriers to overcome.

One of the most important objectives of the European Union is the creation of an Internal Electricity Market (IEM) in Europe. Various national electricity market designs represent one of the major obstacles to the creation of IEM and it is necessary to coordinate national market designs among Member States in order to achieve that. Therefore, this paper gives a comprehensive overview of the electricity market design according to laws related to the electricity sector that are in force in Croatia. Additionally, the paper identifies key obstacles that hamper the development of a well-functioning electricity market in Croatia towards its further integration into the IEM. Since Croatian Power Exchange (CROPEX) is not coupled with any other power exchange, special attention was given to necessary prerequisites for market coupling with the Slovenian Power Exchange (BSP SouthPool) and with the Hungarian Power Exchange (HUPX).

Although a very-low-calorie diet (VLCD) is considered safe and has demonstrated benefits among other types of diets, data are scarce concerning its effects on improving health and weight loss in severely obese patients. As part of the personalized weight loss program developed at the Duga Resa Special Hospital for Extended Treatment, Croatia, we evaluated anthropometric, biochemical, and permanent DNA damage parameters (assessed with the cytochalasin B-blocked micronucleus cytome assay—CBMN) in severely obese patients (BMI ≥ 35 kg m−2) after 3-weeks on a 567 kcal, hospital-controlled VLCD. This is the first study on the permanent genomic (in)stability in such VLCD patients. VLCDs caused significant decreases in weight (loss), parameters of the lipid profile, urea, insulin resistance, and reduced glutathione (GSH). Genomic instability parameters were lowered by half, reaching reference values usually found in the healthy population. A correlation was found between GSH decrease and reduced DNA damage. VLCDs revealed susceptible individuals with remaining higher DNA damage for further monitoring. In a highly heterogeneous group (class II and III in obesity, differences in weight, BMI, and other categories) consisting of 26 obese patients, the approach demonstrated its usefulness and benefits in health improvement, enabling an individual approach to further monitoring, diagnosis, treatment, and risk assessment based on changing anthropometric/biochemical VLCD parameters, and CBMN results.

This paper presents an advanced model for monitoring losses on a 400 kV over-head transmission line (OHL) that can be used for measured data verification and loss assessment. Technical losses are unavoidable physical effects of energy transmission and can be reduced to acceptable levels, with a major share of technical losses on transmission lines being Joule losses. However, at 400 kV voltage levels, the influence of the electrical corona discharge effect and current leakage can have significant impact on power loss. This is especially visible in poor weather conditions, such as the appearance of fog, rain and snow. Therefore, loss monitoring is incorporated into exiting business process to provide transmission system operators (TSO) with the measure of losses and the accurate characterization of measured data. This paper presents an advanced model for loss characterization and assessment that uses phasor measurement unit (PMU) measurements and combines them with end-customer measurements. PMU measurements from the algorithm of differential protection are used to detect differential currents and angles, and this paper proposes further usage of these data for determining the corona losses. The collected data are further processed and used to calculate the amount of corona losses and provide accurate loss assessment and estimation. In each step of the model, cross verification of the measured and calculated data is performed in order to finally provide more accurate loss assessment which is incorporated into the current data acquisition and monitoring systems.

Olive pomace is a valuable secondary raw material rich in polyphenols, left behind after the production of olive oil. The present study investigated the protective effect of a polyphenolic extract from olive pomace (OPE) on cell viability and antioxidant defense of cultured human HepG2 cells submitted to oxidative stress induced by tert-butylhydroperoxide (tBOOH). The investigation considered possible matrix effects, impact of gastrointestinal digestion and cyclodextrin (CD) encapsulation. Pre-treatment of cells with OPE prevented cell damage and increased intracellular glutathione but did not affect the activity of glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase. OPE matrix significantly enhanced cell protective effects of major antioxidants, such as hydroxytyrosol (HTS), while cyclodextrin encapsulation enhanced activity of OPE against intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation. The obtained results show that OPE is more potent antioxidant in comparison to equivalent dose of main polyphenols (HTS and TS) and that increasing solubility of OPE polyphenols by CD encapsulation or digestion enhances their potential to act as intracellular antioxidants. Antioxidative protection of cells by OPE was primarily achieved through direct radical-scavenging/reducing actions rather than activation of endogenous defense systems in the cell.

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are one of the most investigated metal-based nanomaterials. Their biocidal activity boosted their application in both diagnostic and therapeutic medical systems. It is therefore crucial to provide sound evidences for human-related safety of AgNPs. This study aimed to enhance scientific knowledge with regard to biomedical safety of AgNPs by investigating how their different surface properties affect human immune system. Methods: preparation, characterization and stability evaluation was performed for four differently coated AgNPs encompassing neutral, positive and negative agents used for their surface stabilization. Safety aspects were evaluated by testing interaction of AgNPs with fresh human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (hPBMC) by means of particle cellular uptake and their ability to trigger cell death, apoptosis and DNA damages through induction of oxidative stress and damages of mitochondrial membrane. Results: all tested AgNPs altered morphology of freshly isolated hPBMC inducing apoptosis and cell death in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Highest toxicity was observed for positively-charged and protein-coated AgNPs. Cellular uptake of AgNPs was also dose-dependently increased and highest for positively charged AgNPs. Intracellularly, AgNPs induced production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and damaged mitochondrial membrane. Depending on the dose, all AgNPs exhibited genotoxic potential. Conclusions: this study provides systematic and comprehensive data showing how differently functionalized AgNPs may affect the human immune system. Presented results are a valuable scientific contribution to safety assessment of nanosilver-based blood-contacting medical products.
