In the quest for sustainable and efficient solutions for modern electronics, flexible electronic devices have garnered global attention due to their potential to revolutionize various technological applications. The manufacturing of these devices poses significant challenges, particularly regarding environmental sustainability and ease of production. A novel method employing direct inkjet printing of silver nanoparticle (npAg) ink onto cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) substrates is presented, offering a promising alternative to conventional methods. This study demonstrates the ability of CNCs to serve as a flexible and biodegradable substrate that does not require complex post-printing treatments to achieve adequate electrical performance. This method was implemented in the fabrication of an electrowetting-on-dielectric (EWOD) device, achieving circuit patterns with high resolutions and reduced resistances. The findings not only validate the use of CNCs in flexible electronic applications but also underscore the potential of advanced printing techniques to develop flexible electronics that are environmentally sustainable and technically feasible.

In this work, a gate insulator poly (4-vinylphenol) (PVP) of an organic field effect transistor (OFET) was deposited using an inkjet printing technique, realized via a high printing resolution. Various parameters, including the molecular weight of PVP, printing direction, printing voltage, and drop frequency, were investigated to optimize OFET performance. Consequently, PVP with a smaller molecular weight of 11 k and a printing direction parallel to the channel, a printing voltage of 18 V, and a drop frequency of 10 kHz showed the best OFET performance. With a direct ink writing-printed organic semiconductor, this work paves the way for fully inkjet-printed OFETs.

In this work, three different coating techniques are compared and their applicability for ultraviolet nanoimprint lithography (UV-NIL) is investigated. As UV-NIL is considered a suitable volume manufacturing production solution for various emerging applications, it is mandatory to consider environmental aspects such as operational energy use and material consumption as well as waste management. In this paper, spin coating, spray coating, and inkjet coating are used to coat both a high refractive index resin (n = 1.9) and a filler-free resin (n = 1.5), respectively. Variable Angle Spectroscopy Ellipsometry (VASE) was used to analyze the influence of different process parameters on the resin thickness as well as to compare the refractive index achieved from each coating technology. Finally, the applicability of the different coating methods for UV-NIL was investigated by imprinting the resin layers with different test structures. For the final imprints, the resolution, the surface roughness, and the pattern fidelity over 25 imprints was assessed using AFM. Finally, a comparison of the resin consumption and the process time was performed for each coating method.

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) offer a number of key advantages over silicon solar cells. These include their low-cost materials, high efficiency, simplicity of fabrication, and inexpensive manufacturing techniques. To commercialize PSCs, there are many methods to develop the quality of the cells, one of them being printing techniques. Different printing techniques deposition have been developed for the perovskite solar cell, such as blade coating, slot die coating, inkjet printing, screen printing, spray coating, flexographic printing, and gravure printing. These techniques have a substantial impact on the performance of PSCs and controlling film formation to commercialize PSCs. This review summarizes a comprehensive overview of various deposition printing techniques used to fabricate PSCs during different years and different techniques, such as using different preparation methods, novel drying techniques, and ink engineering. In addition, the challenges that are faced by using these, such as material stability, reproducibility of printing processes, and cost-effectiveness techniques, are reviewed. Future research should focus on optimizing printing techniques to improve the stability and scalability of PSCs. Exploring novel perovskite materials, deposition techniques, and innovative fabrication methods may further enhance the PSCs and facilitate their commercialization.

Cellular interactions, such as intercellular communication and signal transduction, can be enhanced within three-dimensional cell spheroids, contributing significantly to cellular viability and proliferation. This is crucial for advancements in cancer research, drug testing, and personalized medicine. The dimensions of the cell spheroids play a pivotal role in their functionality, affecting cell proliferation and differentiation, intercellular interactions, gene expression, protein synthesis, drug penetration, and metabolism. Consequently, different spheroid sizes may be required for various drug sensitivity experiments. However, conventional 3D cell spheroid cultures suffer from challenges such as size inconsistency, poor uniformity, and low throughput. To address these issues, we have developed an automated, intelligent system based on inkjet printing. This system allows for precise control of droplet volume by adjusting algorithms, thereby enabling the formation of spheroids of varying sizes. For spheroids of a single size, the printing pattern can be modified to achieve a coefficient of variation within 10% through a bidirectional compensation method. Furthermore, the system is equipped with an automatic pipetting module, which facilitates the high-throughput preparation of cell spheroids. We have implemented a 3 × 3 spheroid array in a 24-well plate, printing a total of 216 spheroids in just 11 min. Last, we attempted to print mouse small intestinal organoids and cultured them for 7 days, followed by immunofluorescent staining experiments. The results indicate that our equipment is capable of supporting the culture of organoids, which is of great significance for high-throughput drug screening and personalized medicine.

Anode-free lithium batteries (AFLBs) present an opportunity to eliminate the need for conventional graphite electrodes or excess lithium–metal anodes, thus increasing the cell energy density and streamlining the manufacturing process. However, their attributed poor coulombic efficiency leads to rapid capacity decay, underscoring the importance of achieving stable plating and stripping of Li on the negative electrode for the success of this cell configuration. A promising approach is the utilization of lithiophilic coatings such as silver to mitigate the Li nucleation overpotential on the Cu current collector, thereby improving the process of Li plating/stripping. On the other hand, inkjet printing (IJP) emerges as a promising technique for electrode modification in the manufacturing process of lithium batteries, offering a fast and scalable technology capable of depositing both thin films and patterned structures. In this work, a Fujifilm Dimatix inkjet printer was used to deposit Ag sites on a Cu current collector, aiming to modulate the interfacial electrochemistry of the system. Samples were fabricated with varying areas of coverage and the electrochemical performance of the system was systematically evaluated from bare Cu (non-lithiophilic) to a designed pattern (partially lithiophilic) and the fully coated thin film case (lithiophilic). Increasing lithiophilicity resulted in lower charge transfer resistance, higher exchange current density and reduced Li nucleation overpotential (from 55.75 mV for bare Cu to 13.5 mV for the fully coated case). Enhanced half-cell cyclability and higher coulombic efficiency were also achieved (91.22% CE over 76 cycles for bare Cu, 97.01% CE over 250 cycles for the fully coated case), alongside more uniform lithium deposition and fewer macroscopic irregularities. Moreover, our observations demonstrated that surface patterning through inkjet printing could represent an innovative, easy and scalable strategy to provide preferential Li nucleation sites to guide the subsequent Li deposition.

Electrochemical paper-based analytical devices (ePADs) offer an innovative, low-cost, and environmentally friendly approach for real-time diagnostics. In this study, we developed a functional all-inkjet paper-based electrochemical immunosensor using gold (Au) printed ink to detect salivary cortisol. Covalent binding of the cortisol monoclonal antibody onto the printed Au surface was achieved through electrodeposition of 4-carboxymethylaniline (CMA), with ethanolamine passivation to prevent non-specific binding. The ePAD exhibited a linear response within the physiological cortisol range (5–20 ng/mL), with sensitivities of 25, 23, and 19 Ω·ng/mL and R2 values of 0.995, 0.979, and 0.99, respectively. Additionally, interference studies against tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) yielded excellent results. This novel ePAD, fabricated using inkjet printing technology on paper, simplifies the process, reduces environmental impact, and lowers fabrication costs.

The visualization of the spatial distributions of gases from various sources is essential to understanding the composition, localization, and behavior of these gases. In this study, an inkjet-printed localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) subpixel gas sensor array was developed to visualize the spatial distributions of gases and to differentiate between acetic acid, geraniol, pentadecane, and cis-jasmone. The sensor array, which integrates gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), and fluorescent pigments, was positioned 3 cm above the gas source. Hyperspectral imaging was used to capture the LSPR spectra across the sensor array, and these spectra were then used to construct gas information matrices. Principal component analysis (PCA) enabled effective classification of the gases and localization of their sources based on observed spectral differences. Heat maps that visualized the gas concentrations were generated using the mean squared error (MSE) between the sensor responses and reference spectra. The array identified and visualized the four gas sources successfully, thus demonstrating its potential for gas localization and detection applications. The study highlights a straightforward, cost-effective approach to gas sensing and visualization, and in future work, we intend to refine the sensor fabrication process and enhance the detection of complex gas mixtures.

Chitin (usually derived from aq. arthropods like shrimp Pandalus borealis) acts as a potent metal sorbent in both environmental monitoring and retention applications such as wastewater purification or nuclear fuel reprocessing. Given this established (starting in the 1970s) use of chitin and the fact that adsorption of metal ions/complexes to chitin does increase the currents observed in metal-centered redox couples by a factor of about 10, it is straightforward to conceive self-organized (by adsorption modified by adding certain ligands bridging M and chitin) surface films which exert electrical information processing by means of inner-sphere redox processes. Preliminary work is shown concerning the influence of ligands—including some possibly acting as inner-sphere-transfer agents, like caffeic acid—on metal ion retention by chitin. Another ligand is reported to enhance current flow into electrodes (i.e., electron injection from some reducing cation). These inner-sphere redox processes, in turn, can be controlled by creating or removing a chain of conjugated double bonds, e.g., by Diels–Alder reactions. Devices admitting corresponding reagents in a controlled manner and appropriate array then act as NAND gates, thus being components capable of performing each kind of classical computation. Applications in environmental analysis and “green” computing for simple purposes like electronic keys are suggested. The empirical basis for these conclusions includes studies on the influences of ligand additions on M adsorption (Mn, Ni, several REEs…) on chitin; some of these bridging ligands, like caffeinate and ferulate, can reversibly react with appropriate dienes. At the employed concentrations, distances among adsorbed metal ions are 1–3 nm, meaning that the charge-flow control takes spacer ligands like carotenoids. Practical setups are pointed to, using evidence from ligand-augmented metal ion–chitin interactions, which might combine oxidizing (Ce) and optically address reducing (Eu) metal ions into a framework for coligand-controlled charge flow.

Inkjet printing of magnetic materials has increased in recent years, as it has the potential to improve research in smart, functional materials. Magnetostriction is an inherent property of magnetic materials which allows strain or magnetic fields to be detected. This makes it very attractive for sensors in the area of structural health monitoring by detecting internal strains in carbon fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite. Inkjet printing offers design flexibility for these sensors to influence the magnetic response to the strain. This allows the sensor to be tailored to suit the location of defects in the CFRP. This research has looked into the viability of printable soft magnetic materials for structural health monitoring (SHM) of CFRP. Magnetite and nickel ink dispersions were selected to print using the JetLab 4 drop-on-demand technique. The printability of both inks was tested by selecting substrate, viscosity and solvent evaporation. Clogging was found to be an issue for both ink dispersions. Sonicating and adjusting the jetting parameters helped in distributing the nanoparticles. We found that magnetite nanoparticles were ideal as a sensor as there is more than double increase in saturation magnetisation by 49 Am2/kg and more than quadruple reduction of coercive field of 5.34 kA/m than nickel. The coil design was found to be the most sensitive to the field as a function of strain, where the gradient was around 80% higher than other sensor designs. Additive layering of 10, 20 and 30 layers of a magnetite square patch was investigated, and it was found that the 20-layered magnetite print had an improved field response to strain while maintaining excellent print resolution. SHM of CFRP was performed by inducing a strain via bending and it was found that the magnetite coil detected a change in field as the strain was applied.

This study investigated the influence of microstructure on the performance of Ag inkjet-printed, resistive temperature detectors (RTDs) fabricated using particle-free inks based on a silver nitrate (AgNO3) precursor and ethylene glycol as the ink solvent. Specifically, the temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) and sensitivity for sensors printed using inks that use monoethylene glycol (mono-EG), diethylene glycol (di-EG), and triethylene glycol (tri-EG) and subjected to a low-pressure argon (Ar) plasma after printing were investigated. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) confirmed previous findings that microstructure is strongly influenced by the ink solvent, with mono-EG inks producing dense structures, while di- and tri-EG inks produce porous structures, with tri-EG inks yielding the most porous structures. RTD testing revealed that sensors printed using mono-EG ink exhibited the highest TCR (1.7 × 10−3/°C), followed by di-EG ink (8.2 × 10−4/°C) and tri-EG ink (7.2 × 10−4/°C). These findings indicate that porosity exhibits a strong negative influence on TCR. Sensitivity was not strongly influenced by microstructure but rather by the resistance of RTD. The highest sensitivity (0.84 Ω/°C) was observed for an RTD printed using mono-EG ink but not under plasma exposure conditions that yield the highest TCR.

Inkjet printing technology offers a unique approach to producing direct-patterned pixels without fine metal masks for active matrix displays. Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) consisting of thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters facilitate efficient light emission without heavy metals, such as platinum and iridium. Multi-resonance TADF molecules, characterized by their small full width at half maxima (FWHM), are highly suitable for the requirements of wide color-gamut displays. Herein, host-free TADF inks with a low concentration of 1 mg/mL were developed and inkjet-printed onto a seeding layer, concurrently serving as the hole-transporting layer. Attributed to the proof-of-concept of host-free inks printed on a mixed seeding layer, a maximum external quantum efficiency of 13.1% (improved by a factor of 21.8) was achieved in the inkjet-printed OLED, with a remarkably narrow FWHM of only 32 nm. Highly efficient energy transfer was facilitated by the effective dispersion of the sensitizer around the terminal emitters.

The development of e-textiles necessitates the creation of highly conductive inks that are compatible with precise inkjet printing, which remains a key challenge. This work presents an innovative, syringe-based method to optimize a novel bio-sourced silver ink for inkjet printing on textiles. We investigate the relationships between inks’ composition, rheological properties, and printing behavior, ultimately assessing the electrical performance of the fabricated circuits. Using Na–alginate and polyethylene glycol (PEG) as the suspension matrix, we demonstrate their viscosity depends on the component ratios. Rheological control of the silver nanoparticle-laden ink has become paramount for uniform printing on textiles. A specific formulation (3 wt.% AgNPs, 20 wt.% Na–alginate, 40 wt.% PEG, and 40 wt.% solvent) exhibits the optimal rheology, enabling the printing of 0.1 mm thick conductive lines with a low resistivity (8 × 10−3 Ω/cm). Our findings pave the way for designing eco-friendly ink formulations that are suitable for inkjet printing flexible antennas and other electronic circuits onto textiles, opening up exciting possibilities for the next generation of E-textiles.

The value of two-dimensional (2D) materials in printed electronics has been gradually explored, and the rheological properties of 2D material dispersions are very different for various printing technologies. Understanding the rheological properties of 2D material dispersions plays a vital role in selecting the optimal manufacturing technology. Inkjet printing is suitable for small nanosheet sizes and low solution viscosity, and it has a significant advantage in developing nanosheet inks because of its masklessness, high efficiency, and high precision. In this work, we selected 2D Ti0.8Co0.2O2 nanosheets, which can be synthesized in large quantities by the liquid phase exfoliation technique; investigated the effects of nanosheet particle size, solution concentration on the rheological properties of the dispersion; and obtained the optimal printing processing method of the dispersion as inkjet printing. The ultrathin Ti0.8Co0.2O2 nanosheet films were prepared by inkjet printing, and their magnetic characteristics were compared with those of Ti0.8Co0.2O2 powder. The films prepared by inkjet printing exhibited long-range ordering, maintaining the nanosheet powders’ paramagnetic characteristics. Our work underscored the potential of inkjet printing as a promising method for fabricating precisely controlled thin films using 2D materials, with applications spanning electronics, sensors, and catalysis.

The inkjet printing of water-based graphene and graphene oxide inks on five substrates, two rigid (silicon and glass) and three flexible (cellulose, indium tin oxide-coated polyethylene terephthalate (ITO-PET) and ceramic coated paper (PEL paper)), is reported in this work. The physical properties of the inks, the chemical/topographical properties of selected substrates, and the inkjet printing (IJP) of the graphene-based materials, including the optimisation of the printing parameters together with the morphological characterisation of the printed layers, are investigated and described in this article. Furthermore, the impact of both the chemical and topographical properties of the substrates and the physical properties of graphene-based inks on the morphology, wettability and surface coverage of the inkjet-printed graphene patterns is studied and discussed in detail.

This work reports on printed organic PEDOT:PSS sensors for the detection of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) vapors. Compared to commercial devices, the proposed sensors are thin and flexible, allowing their simple integration into an industrial process for multilocation decontamination monitoring. The sensors show a reproducible behavior in a laboratory environment using chambers containing a concentration of 130 ppm of H2O2, measuring an increase in resistance of ~1200% for 1 h exposure. The results highlight the importance of contact interfaces and their encapsulation for reproducible sensing behavior. These devices are promising as low-cost disposable devices for decontamination process monitoring.

Flexible electronics, also referred to as printable electronics, represent an interesting technology for implementing electronic circuits via depositing electronic devices onto flexible substrates, boosting their possible applications. Among all flexible electronics, interdigitated electrodes (IDEs) are currently being used for different sensor applications since they offer significant benefits beyond their functionality as capacitors, like the generation of high output voltage, fewer fabrication steps, convenience of application of sensitive coatings, material imaging capability and a potential of spectroscopy measurements via electrical excitation frequency variation. This review examines the role of IDEs in printed and flexible electronics since they are progressively being incorporated into a myriad of applications, envisaging that the growth pattern will continue in the next generations of flexible circuits to come.

With the rapid development of the emerging intelligent, flexible, transparent, and wearable electronic devices, such as quantum-dot-based micro light-emitting diodes (micro-LEDs), thin-film transistors (TFTs), and flexible sensors, numerous pixel-level printing technologies have emerged. Among them, inkjet printing has proven to be a useful and effective tool for consistently printing micron-level ink droplets, for instance, smaller than 50 µm, onto wearable electronic devices. However, quickly and accurately determining the printing quality, which is significant for the electronic device performance, is challenging due to the large quantity and micron size of ink droplets. Therefore, leveraging existing image processing algorithms, we have developed an effective method and software for quickly detecting the morphology of printed inks served in inkjet printing. This method is based on the edge detection technology. We believe this method can greatly meet the increasing demands for quick evaluation of print quality in inkjet printing.

In recent years, inkjet printing has emerged as a promising advanced fabrication technology in the field of electronics, offering remarkable advantages in terms of cost-effectiveness, design flexibility, and rapid prototyping. For these reasons, inkjet printing technology has been widely adopted in various applications, including printed circuit board fabrication, sensor development (e.g., temperature, humidity, and pressure sensing), and antenna and filter production, up to the microwave frequency range. The present paper is focused on the investigation of a methodology based on Monte Carlo simulations for quantitatively assessing the influence of fabrication tolerances on the performance of inkjet-printed microwave devices. In particular, the proposed methodology is applied to an inkjet-printed hairpin band pass filter specifically tailored for operation in the L band (i.e., from 1 GHz to 2 GHz). The initial design phase involved the use of computer aided design (CAD) software to optimize the geometric dimensions of the designed filter to closely match the desired performance specifications in terms of bandwidth, insertion loss, and return loss. Later, a Monte Carlo analysis was conducted to evaluate the propagation of tolerances in the fabrication process throughout the design and to estimate their effects on device performance. The fabrication process exploited the advanced capabilities of the Voltera inkjet printer, which was used to deposit a silver-based conductive ink on a commercial Rogers substrate. The device’s performance was evaluated by comparing the simulated scattering parameters with those measured on the developed filter using a vector network analyzer (VNA), thus ensuring accurate validation of real-world performance.

Enzyme-based biosensors commonly utilize the drop-casting method for their surface modification. However, the drawbacks of this technique, such as low reproducibility, coffee ring effects, and challenges in mass production, hinder its application. To overcome these limitations, we propose a novel surface functionalization strategy of enzyme crosslinking via inkjet printing for reagentless enzyme-based biosensors. This method includes printing three functional layers onto a screen-printed electrode: the enzyme layer, crosslinking layer, and protective layer. Nanomaterials and substrates are preloaded together during our inkjet printing. Inkjet-printed electrodes feature a uniform enzyme deposition, ensuring high reproducibility and superior electrochemical performance compared to traditional drop-casted ones. The resultant biosensors display high sensitivity, as well as a broad linear response in the physiological range of the serum phosphate. This enzyme crosslinking method has the potential to extend into various enzyme-based biosensors through altering functional layer components.

Invasive alien plant species (IAPS) may cause threats to native biodiversity in ecosystems. Researchers have been investigating all the possible ways that they can be used effectively for other purposes. Since IAPS are capable of forming cellulose fibre nets, in this research, papers were made from three different types of IAPS (Japanese knotweed, giant goldenrod, and black locust). This research examined these IAPS papers and their effectiveness when used as printing substrates. In comparison to commercial office paper, the differences in basic, surface, optical, and microscopic properties were measured. As a widely used technology, inkjet printing was applied. We tested a commonly used sans-serif typeface (which has been established as being more legible than other typefaces in previous research) in three different type sizes (i.e., 8, 10, and 12 pt). According to the results, paper made from IAPS could offer some usable properties and acceptable legibility, especially when printing typefaces with specific attributes, such as moderate counter size, higher x-height, and minimal differences in the letter stroke width, are used. An appropriate typographic tonal density should be achieved in combination with an adequate letter size, e.g., 10 pt type size when a sans-serif typeface is used.

Paperboard boxes represent a sought-after class of packaging products, where the use of recycled fibers offers a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to virgin fibers. The presence of a significant proportion of recycled fibers in the paperboard leads to a number of limitations associated with the deterioration of its characteristics. In this study, the properties of coated and uncoated paperboards containing recycled fibers, wood pulp, and virgin cellulose fibers were investigated using a laboratory sample of paperboard produced from 100% recycled fibers without any chemical additives for comparison. Properties such as smoothness, bulk density, absorbency, and tensile strength, as well as colorimetric characteristics, were determined for the recycled paperboards; for the latter test, charts were printed using inkjet printing and UV-curable inks. Whiteness was calculated by three formulae (CIE, Berger, and Stensby), and all the paperboards had a relatively low whiteness (not exceeding 90 CIE), with a yellowish tint due to recycled fibers and mechanical pulp in the composition. The absence of optical brightening agents in the paperboards was experimentally confirmed. The color gamuts of the paperboards were in direct ratio to their whiteness, with the highest ones demonstrated by the coated paperboards. Color reproduction, according to the tone value increase curves, also depended on the whiteness. Uncoated paperboards demonstrated smaller color shifts than the coated ones, with the greatest increase in tone for yellow color. Coated recycled paperboards are suitable for packaging printing under the same conditions as virgin fiber boards, while uncoated boards are the recommended choice for digital printing with UV inks.

Electrowetting with a dielectric layer is commonly preferred in practical applications. However, its potential is often limited by factors like the properties of the dielectric layer and its breakdown, along with the complexity of the deposition method. Fortunately, advancements in 3D inkjet printing offer a more adaptable solution for making patterned functional layers. In this study, we used a negative photoresist (HN-1901) to create a new dielectric layer for an electrowetting display on a 3-inch ITO glass using a Dimatix DMP-2580 inkjet printer. The resulting devices performed better due to their enhanced resistance to dielectric breakdown. We meticulously investigated the physical properties of the photoresist material and printer settings to achieve optimal printing. We also controlled the uniformity of the dielectric layer by adjusting ink drop spacing. Compared to traditional electrowetting display devices, those with inkjet-printed dielectric layers showed significantly fewer defects like bubbles and electrode corrosion. They maintained an outstanding response time and breakdown resistance, operating at an open voltage of 20 V. Remarkably, these devices achieved faster response times of ton 22.3 ms and toff 14.2 ms, surpassing the performance of the standard device.

In this study, a multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) dispersion is used as an ink for a single-nozzle inkjet printing system to produce a planar coil that can be used to determine strain wirelessly. The MWCNT dispersion is non-covalently functionalized by dispersing the CNTs in an anionic surfactant, namely sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). The fabrication parameters, such as sonication energy and centrifugation time, are optimized to obtain an aqueous suspension suitable for an inkjet printer. Planar coils with different design parameters are printed on a flexible polyethylene terephthalate (PET) polymer substrate. The design parameters include a different number of windings, inner diameter, outer diameter, and deposited layers. The electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analysis is employed to characterize the printed planar coils, and an equivalent electrical circuit model is derived based on the results. Additionally, the radio frequency identification technique is utilized to wirelessly investigate the read-out mechanism of the printed planar MWCNT coils. The complex impedance of the inductively coupled sensor undergoes a shift under strain, allowing for the monitoring of changes in resonance frequency and bandwidth (i.e., amplitude). The proposed wireless strain sensor exhibits a remarkable gauge factor of 22.5, which is nearly 15 times higher than that of the wireless strain sensors based on conventional metallic strain gauges. The high gauge factor of the proposed sensor suggests its high potential in a wide range of applications, such as structural health monitoring, wearable devices, and soft robotics.

Flexible devices have extensive applications in areas including wearable sensors, healthcare, smart packaging, energy, automotive and aerospace sectors, and other related fields. Droplet printing technology can be utilized to print flexible electronic components with micro/nanostructures on various scales, exhibiting good compatibility and wide material applicability for device production. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the current research status of droplet printing technologies and their applications across various domains, aiming to offer a valuable reference for researchers in related areas.

Zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) are currently being studied as an alternative to lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The nucleation and growth of the zinc deposition mechanism is a critical field of research in ZIBs, as it directly affects the battery efficiency and lifespan. It is of paramount importance in mitigating the formation of porous, dendritic Zn structures that may cause cell inefficiency and, eventually, short-circuiting failures. Interfacial engineering plays a key role in providing reversible plating and stripping of metallic Zn in ZIBs through the proper regulation of the electrode–electrolyte interface. In this work, we investigated the behavior and characteristics of Zn plating on inkjet-printed Ti3C2Tx MXene-coated substrates according to the different electrolyte compositions. Specifically, ZnCl2 and ZnSO4 solutions were employed, evaluating the effect of a relatively low-molecular-weight polyethylene glycol (PEG400) addition to the electrolyte as additive. Electrochemical analyses demonstrated higher deposition kinetics in chloride-based electrolytes rather than sulfate ones, resulting in lower nucleation overpotentials. However, the morphology and microstructure of the plated Zn, investigated via scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), revealed that the electrolytic solution played a predominant role in the Zn crystallite formation rather than the Ti3C2Tx MXene coating. Specifically, the preferential Zn [002] orientation could be favored when using additive-free ZnSO4 solution, and a PEG addition was found to be an efficient texturing agent only in ZnCl2 solution.

Binders play a pivotal role in the production and the operation of lithium-ion batteries. They influence a number of key dispersion characteristics and battery parameters. In the light of growing interest in additive manufacturing technologies, binders were found to decisively govern the processability due to the induced complex non-Newtonian behavior. This paper examines the relevance of various binder derivatives for aqueous graphite dispersions that can be employed in inkjet printing. Two different carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) derivatives with strongly deviating molecular weights were employed. The impact of the inherent polymer characteristics on the processability and the electrode characteristics were explored. Therefore, miscellaneous studies were carried out at the dispersion, the electrode, and the cell levels. The results revealed that the CMC with the lower molecular weight affected most of the studied characteristics more favorably than the counterpart with a higher molecular weight. In particular, the processability, encompassing drop formation and drop deposition, the cohesion behavior, and the electrochemical characteristics, were positively impacted by the low-molecular-weight CMC. The adhesion behavior was enhanced using the high-molecular-weight CMC. This demonstrates that the selection of a suitable binder derivative merits close attention.

In the last few years, the manufacturing of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) by means of innovative tridimensional and bidimensional printing technologies has significantly catalyzed the attention of researchers. Inkjet material deposition, in particular, can become a key enabling technology for the production of polymer-based inertial sensors characterized by low cost, high manufacturing scalability and superior sensitivity. In this paper, a fully inkjet-printed polymeric accelerometer is proposed, and its manufacturing steps are described. The manufacturing challenges connected with the inkjet deposition of SU-8 as a structural material are identified and addressed, resulting in the production of a functional spring-mass sensor. A step-crosslinking process allows optimization of the final shape of the device and limits defects typical of inkjet printing. The resulting device is characterized from a morphological point of view, and its functionality is assessed in performing optical readout. The acceleration range of the optimized device is 0–0.7 g, its resolution is 2 × 10−3 g and its sensitivity is 6745 nm/g. In general, the work demonstrates the feasibility of polymeric accelerometer production via inkjet printing, and these characteristic parameters demonstrate their potential applicability in a broad range of uses requiring highly accurate acceleration measurements over small displacements.

Recently, active research has been conducted on the development of flexible electronic devices. Hence, the transparent conductive film (TCF), an essential component of the device, must also be flexible. However, the commonly used indium tin oxide (ITO) TCF lacks flexibility and contains rare metal, making resource depletion an issue. Therefore, we focused on poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)/poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS), which has high flexibility and conductivity. Flexible TCFs have been fabricated by coating PEDOT:PSS on polyethylene naphthalate substrates using an inkjet printer. However, the current issue in such fabrication is the effect of the interface state on the transparency and conductivity of the thin film. In this study, we investigated the effect of surfactant in addition to polar solvents on the properties of thin films fabricated with PEDOT:PSS ink. Although the electrical conductivity was reduced, the transmittance remained above 90%. Thus, these results are comparable to those of ITO TCFs for practical use in terms of optical properties.

Rapid technological advancements have led to increased demands for sensors. Hence, high performance suitable for next-generation technology is required. As sensing technology has numerous applications, various materials and patterning methods are used for sensor fabrication. This affects the characteristics and performance of sensors, and research centered specifically on these patterns is necessary for high integration and high performance of these devices. In this paper, we review the patterning techniques used in recently reported sensors, specifically the most widely used capacitive sensors, and their impact on sensor performance. Moreover, we introduce a method for increasing sensor performance through three-dimensional (3D) structures.

In recent years, there has been a huge surge in interest in improving the efficiency of smart electronic and optoelectronic devices via the development of novel materials and printing technologies. Inkjet printing, known to deposit ‘ink on demand’, helps to reduce the consumption of materials. Printing inks on various substrates like paper, glass, and fabric is possible, generating flexible devices that include supercapacitors, sensors, and electrochromic devices. Newer inks being tested and used include formulations of carbon nanoparticles, photochromic dyes, conducting polymers, etc. Among the conducting polymers, PANI has been well researched. It can be synthesized and doped easily and allows for the easy formation of composite conductive inks. Doping and the addition of additives like metal salts, oxidants, and halide ions tune its electrical properties. PANI has a large specific capacitance and has been researched for its applications in supercapacitors. It has been used as a sensor for pH and humidity as well as a biosensor for sweat, blood, etc. The response is generated by a change in its electrical conductivity. This review paper presents an overview of the investigations on the formulation of the inks based on conductive polymers, mainly centered around PANI, and inkjet printing of its formulations for a variety of devices, including supercapacitors, sensors, electrochromic devices, and patterning on flexible substrates. It covers their performance characteristics and also presents a future perspective on inkjet printing technology for advanced electronic, optoelectronic, and other conductive-polymer-based devices. We believe this review provides a new direction for next-generation conductive-polymer-based devices for various applications.

The exceptional property of plasmonic materials to localize light into sub-wavelength regimes has significant importance in various applications, especially in photovoltaics. In this study, we report the localized surface plasmon-enhanced perovskite solar cell (PSC) performance of plasmonic gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) embedded into a titanium oxide (TiO2) microdot array (MDA), which was deposited using the inkjet printing technique. The X-ray (XRD) analysis of MAPI (methyl ammonium lead iodide) perovskite films deposited on glass substrates with and without MDA revealed no destructive effect of MDA on the perovskite structure. Moreover, a 12% increase in the crystallite size of perovskite with MDA was registered. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) techniques revealed the morphology of the TiO2_MDA and TiO2-AuNPs_MDA. The finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation was employed to evaluate the absorption cross-sections and local field enhancement of AuNPs in the TiO2 and TiO2/MAPI surrounding media. Reflectance UV-Vis spectra of the samples comprising glass/TiO2 ETL/TiO2_MDA (ETL—an electron transport layer) with and without AuNPs in TiO2_MDA were studied, and the band gap (Eg) values of MAPI have been calculated using the Kubelka–Munk equation. The MDA introduction did not influence the band gap value, which remained at ~1.6 eV for all the samples. The photovoltaic performance of the fabricated PSC with and without MDA and the corresponding key parameters of the solar cells have also been studied and discussed in detail. The findings indicated a significant power conversion efficiency improvement of over 47% in the PSCs with the introduction of the TiO2-AuNPs_MDA on the ETL/MAPI interface compared to the reference device. Our study demonstrates the significant enhancement achieved in halide PSC by utilizing AuNPs within a TiO2_MDA. This approach holds great promise for advancing the efficiency and performance of photovoltaic devices.

This work demonstrates the green production of a graphene ink for inkjet printing and its use as a hole transport layer (HTL) in an organic solar cell. Graphene as an HTL improves the selective hole extraction at the anode and prevents charge recombination at the electronic interface and metal diffusion into the photoactive layer. Graphite was exfoliated in water, concentrated by iterative centrifugation, and characterized by Raman. The concentrated graphene ink was incorporated into inverted organic solar cells by inkjet printing on the active polymer in an ambient atmosphere. Argon plasma was used to enhance wetting of the polymer with the graphene ink during printing. The argon plasma treatment of the active polymer P3HT:PCBM was investigated by XPS, AFM and contact angle measurements. Efficiency and lifetime studies undertaken show that the device with graphene as HTL is fully functional and has good potential for an inkjet printable and flexible alternative to PEDOT:PSS.

In this study, we report the development of a technique to fabricate a screen-printed electrode (SPE) and apply it in uric acid sensing. The SPE was fabricated by printing it on a photo paper substrate using a printing technique on an office printer. In particular, the conductive ink used to print the working electrode (WE) and counter electrode (CE) consisted of graphene oxide (GO) and a gold nanorod (AuNR) material. While the reference electrode (RE) was made by applying a conductive silver paste to the fabricated SPE, the electrochemical measurement of uric acid solution using fabricated SPE GO/AuNR provided a higher signal than commercially available SPE. The electroanalytical performance of the fabricated SPE based on GO/AuNR, which was used to measure the uric acid solution, exhibited a linear range of 0.8−200 μM, a detection limit of 0.5 μM, a quantitation limit of 1.0 μM, an outstanding repeatability (% relative standard deviation) of 4.885%, and good selectivity with ascorbic acid, dopamine, glucose, urea, and sodium as interference. Furthermore, an SPE, fabricated based on GO/AuNR, was successfully employed for the determination of uric acid concentration in human urine samples using the standard addition approach.

Copper (Cu) and tungsten (W) possess exceptional electrical and thermal conductivity properties, making them suitable candidates for applications such as interconnects and thermal conductivity enhancements. Solution-based additive manufacturing (SBAM) offers unique advantages, including patterning capabilities, cost-effectiveness, and scalability among the various methods for manufacturing Cu and W-based films and structures. In particular, SBAM material jetting techniques, such as inkjet printing (IJP), direct ink writing (DIW), and aerosol jet printing (AJP), present a promising approach for design freedom, low material wastes, and versatility as either stand-alone printers or integrated with powder bed-based metal additive manufacturing (MAM). Thus, this review summarizes recent advancements in solution-processed Cu and W, focusing on IJP, DIW, and AJP techniques. The discussion encompasses general aspects, current status, challenges, and recent research highlights. Furthermore, this paper addresses integrating material jetting techniques with powder bed-based MAM to fabricate functional alloys and multi-material structures. Finally, the factors influencing large-scale fabrication and potential prospects in this area are explored.

In this work, a spray drying method was developed to produce drug/polymer (simvastatin/polycaprolactone) microparticles that have the potential to be used as a pre-formulation for ex tempore preparation of 2D printing cartridges. An experimental model was designed with the process parameters set to predict the smallest particle size required for successful 2D printing. Three different types of particles (lactose, nanocellulose/lactose, calcium silicate) were produced, and the average size of the dry particles varied depending on the sampling location (cyclone, collection vessel). The encapsulation efficiency of simvastatin was highest with nanocellulose/lactose from the collection vessel. The one-month stability of simvastatin in the particles showed low content, but the addition of ascorbic acid as an antioxidant increased the chemical stability of the drug. Interestingly, the addition of antioxidants decreased the stability of simvastatin in the calcium silicate particles from the collection vessel. Dispersion of the particles in three different propylene glycol and water mixtures (10/90, 50/50, and 90/10% (v/v)), representing a printable ink medium with three different viscosity and surface tension properties, showed that nanocellulose/lactose was the most suitable antiadhesive in terms of dispersed particle size (˂1 µm). After one month of storage, the dispersed particles remained in the same size range without undesirable particle agglomeration.

Microwave transducers are widely used for sensing applications in areas such as gas sensing and microfluidics. Inkjet printing technology has been proposed as a promising method for fabricating such devices due to its capability to produce complex patterns and geometries with high precision. In this work, the temperature-dependent electrical properties of an inkjet-printed single-port interdigitated capacitor (IDC) were investigated at cryogenic temperatures down to 20 K. The IDC was designed and fabricated using inkjet printing technology, while its reflection coefficient was measured using a vector network analyzer in a cryogenic measurement setup and then transformed into the corresponding admittance. The resonant frequency and quality factor (Q-factor) of the IDC were extracted as functions of the temperature and their sensitivity was evaluated. The results showed that the resonant frequency shifted to higher frequencies as the temperature was reduced, while the Q-factor increased as the temperature decreased. The trends and observations in the temperature-dependent electrical properties of the IDC are discussed and analyzed in this paper, and are expected to be useful in future advancement of the design and optimization of inkjet-printed microwave transducers for sensing applications and cryogenic electronics.

The fabrication of thin-film electrodes, which contain metal nanoparticles and nanostructures for applications in electrochemical sensing as well as energy conversion and storage, is often based on multi-step procedures that include two main passages: (i) the synthesis and purification of nanomaterials and (ii) the fabrication of thin films by coating electrode supports with these nanomaterials. The patterning and miniaturization of thin film electrodes generally require masks or advanced patterning instrumentation. In recent years, various approaches have been presented to integrate the spatially resolved deposition of metal precursor solutions and the rapid conversion of the precursors into metal nanoparticles. To achieve the latter, high intensity light irradiation has, in particular, become suitable as it enables the photochemical, photocatalytical, and photothermal conversion of the precursors during or slightly after the precursor deposition. The conversion of the metal precursors directly on the target substrates can make the use of capping and stabilizing agents obsolete. This review focuses on hybrid platforms that comprise digital metal precursor ink printing and high intensity light irradiation for inducing metal precursor conversions into patterned metal and alloy nanoparticles. The combination of the two methods has recently been named Print-Light-Synthesis by a group of collaborators and is characterized by its sustainability in terms of low material consumption, low material waste, and reduced synthesis steps. It provides high control of precursor loading and light irradiation, both affecting and improving the fabrication of thin film electrodes.

Robot-guided inkjet printing technology offers a new way for the digital and additive deposition of low-viscous inks to be made directly onto arbitrary surfaces and, thus, enables the production of individualized printed electronics on large-scale objects. When compared to conventional flatbed printing, the distance between the nozzle plate and the object’s surface varies and needs to be considered in order to match the accuracy requirements needed for the positioning of single drops. Knowledge about applicable distance limits and the influence of tunable print parameters is crucial for improving the print process and results. This study discusses the sources of errors in the inkjet printing process onto 3D objects and presents extensive results about position accuracy in relation to jetting distance for different parameter sets of functional inks, drop volumes, and piezo voltages. Additionally, an efficient novel method was applied to determine the drop position accuracy of inkjet droplets in relation to the jetting distance. The method relies on cylinder geometry for the object and an inkjet head that is guided by a six-axis robot manipulator along the cylinder’s axis. For the determination of drop placement accuracy, the position of single dots on the surface was compared to a model which considered the cylinder radii, drop velocity, and the movement speed of the guided inkjet printhead. The method and the extensive research results can be utilized for the prediction of achievable drop placement accuracy and the prior definition of distance limits.

In recent years, advancements in microfluidic and sensor technologies have led to the development of new methods for monitoring cell growth both in macro- and micro-systems. In this paper, a microfluidic (MF) platform with a microbioreactor and integrated impedimetric sensor is proposed for cell growth monitoring during the cell cultivation process in a scaled-down simulator. The impedimetric sensor with an interdigitated electrode (IDE) design was realized with inkjet printing and integrated into the custom-made MF platform, i.e., the scaled-down simulator. The proposed method, which was integrated into a simple and rapid fabrication MF system, presents an excellent candidate for the scaled-down analyses of cell growths that can be of use in, e.g., optimization of the cultivated meat bioprocess. When applied to MRC-5 cells as a model of adherent mammalian cells, the proposed sensor was able to precisely detect all phases of cell growth (the lag, exponential, stationary, and dying phases) during a 96-h cultivation period with limited available nutrients. By combining the impedimetric approach with image processing, the platform enables the real-time monitoring of biomasses and advanced control of cell growth progress in microbioreactors and scaled-down simulator systems.

Electrical and optical properties of graphene/silver nanoparticles hybrid suspensions intended for use in inkjet printing technologies were studied. Few-layered graphene particles were manufactured via a direct ultrasonic-assisted liquid-phase exfoliation route in water/surfactant system, whereas silver nanoparticles were synthetized using a polyol process. Hybrid suspensions for graphene/silver nanoparticles mixtures showed significant reduction in mean particle size while electrical conductivity remained almost intact even after thorough centrifugation. Structuring effects in mixed colloids were very pronounced as both electrical conductivity and optical transmission showed maxima at 65 wt.% graphene. Suspensions with conductivities above 300 μSm/cm, much higher than previously reported, were obtained, and resulted in the manufacturing of films with less than 10% optical absorption throughout the visible region. These samples did not demonstrate absorption peaks attributed to silver nanoparticles’ surface plasmon resonance, which is suitable for transparent electrode applications. Suspension properties at optimal composition (65 wt.% graphene) are very promising for printed electronics as well as transparent conductive coating applications. In the paper, we establish that the optimal suspension composition matches that of the film; therefore, more attention should be paid to carefully studying electrically conductive suspensions.

This study investigated the surface properties of optical sensor layers prepared using sol-gel technology and their response to dissolved NH3. A glass substrate was used to fabricate the optical sensor layers. The sol-gel solution was applied to the glass substrate using three different techniques: spin coating (SC), inkjet printing (IP), and spray coating (SP). In this work, we have attempted to investigate the effects of the different techniques for producing the sensor layers and to determine their response in the presence of ammonia. The surface properties (surface free energy—SFE and surface chemical composition—XPS) and spectral properties (response to ammonia and real-time response) of the prepared optical sensor layers were characterised. The results show that the sensor layers prepared by different techniques have similar SFE and XPS values, but different responses to dissolved NH3 solution and different responses in real-time measurements (exposure to fresh fish). Sensor layers prepared with a spray coating (SP) are the most responsive, the most sensitive, and have a higher response over time and the biggest colour change compared to SC and IP sensor layers.

In this work, inkjet printing technology was used to print a thin layer of a hydrophilic solution containing polydopamine as a binder and polyethyleneimine as a strong hydrophilic agent on a commercial hydrophobic membrane to produce a Janus membrane for membrane distillation. The pristine and modified membranes were tested in a direct-contact membrane distillation system with mineral oil-containing feedwater. The results revealed that an integrated and homogenous hydrophilic layer was printed on the membrane with small intrusions in the pores. The membrane, which contained three layers of inkjet-printed hydrophilic layers, showed a high underwater oil contact angle and a low in-air water contact angle. One-layer inkjet printing was not robust enough, but the triple-layer coated modified membrane maintained its anti-oil fouling performance even for a feed solution containing 70 g/L NaCl and 0.01 v/v% mineral oil concentration with a flux of around 20 L/m2h. This study implies the high potential of the inkjet printing technique as a facile surface modification strategy to improve membrane performance.

A detailed study of the dielectric behavior of printed capacitors is given, in which the dielectric consists of a thin (r 20–69. The used ink contains surface-modified Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3 (BST), a polymeric crosslinking agent and a thermal initiator, which allows the immediate polymerization of the ink during printing, leading to homogenous layers. To validate the results of the calculated permittivities, different layer thicknesses of the dielectric are printed and the capacitances, as well as the loss factors, are measured. Afterwards, the exact layer thicknesses are determined with cross sectional SEM images of ion-etched samples. Then, the permittivities are calculated with the known effective area of the capacitors. Furthermore, the ink composition is varied to obtain different ceramic/polymer ratios and thus different permittivities. The packing density of all composites is analyzed via SEM to show possible pores and validate the target ratio, respectively. The correlation between the chosen ratio and the measured permittivity is discussed using models from the literature. In addition, the leakage current of some capacitors is measured and discussed. For that, the dielectric was printed on different bottom electrodes as the nature of the electrode was found to be crucial for the performance.

Irregularities in breathing patterns can be detected using breath monitor sensors, and this help clinicians to predict health disorders ranging from sleep disorders to heart failures. Variations in humidity during the inhalation and exhalation of breath have been utilized as a marker to detect breath patterns, and graphene-based devices are the favored sensing media for relative humidity (RH). In general, most graphene-based RH sensors have been used to explore resistance change as a measurement parameter to calibrate against the RH value, and they are prone to noise interference. Here, we fabricated RH sensors using graphene ink as a sensing medium and printed them in the shape of interdigital electrodes on glossy paper using an office inkjet printer. Further, we investigated the capacitance change in the sensor for the RH changes in the range of 10–70%. It exhibited excellent sensitivity with 0.03 pF/% RH, good stability, and high intraday and interday repeatability, with relative standard deviations of 1.2% and 2.2%, respectively. Finally, the sensor was embedded into a face mask and interfaced with a microcontroller, and capacitance change was measured under three different breathing situations: normal breathing, deep breathing, and coughing. The result show that the dominant frequency for normal breath is 0.22 Hz, for deep breath, it is 0.11 Hz, and there was no significant dominant cough frequency due to persistent coughing and inconsistent patterns. Inkjet printing for printed electronics is a growing market due to its advantages, including scalability, various usable materials and its digital, pixel based layout design. An important quality factor is the wetting of the ink on the substrate. This article proposes a workflow to evaluate the print quality of specific layouts by means of image analysis. A self-developed image analysis software, which compares a mask with the actual layout, enables a pixel-based analysis of the wetting behavior by the implementation of two parameters called over- and underwetting rate. A comparison of actual and targeted track widths can be performed for the evaluation of different parameters, such as the tested plasma treatment, drop spacing (DS) and substrate temperature. To prove the functionality of the image analyses tool, the print quality of Au structures inkjet printed on cyclic olefin copolymer (COC) substrates was studied experimentally by varying the three previously mentioned parameters. The experimental results showed that the wetting behavior of Au ink deposited on COC substrates influences various line widths differently, leading to higher spreading for smaller line widths. The proposed workflow is suitable for identifying and evaluating multiple tested parameter variations and might be easily adopted for printers for in-process print quality control in industrial manufacturing.

This work focuses on developing an understanding of the rheological properties of polymer-based dopant-source inks at the timescales relevant to inkjet printing and their corresponding roles in determining the production of defect-free droplets. Ink-specific optimization of printing processes for phosphorus and boron dopant-source inks with different compositions is demonstrated. Rheological flow curves measured by a piezo axial vibrator (PAV) were used to study the changes in complex viscosity (η*) and in the elastic (G′) and viscous (G″) components of the shear modulus (G*) with respect to changes in frequency (from fmin = 1 kHz to fmax = 10 kHz) to obtain an insight into the high-frequency behaviour of inks, as well as the effects of temperature (25 °C and 45 °C) and the natural aging time of the inks. Inks demonstrating complex viscosity η*min ≥ 2 mPas to η*max ≤ 20 mPas and an elastic modulus G′ ≤ 20 Pa, produced droplets with negligible defects. Of the three rheological parameters (η*, G′ and G″), the elastic component (G′) of the shear modulus was observed to have the greatest significance in determining the stability and homogeneity of ink droplets, thus dictating the quality of the printed structures. The reliability and stability of droplet formation were further investigated through voltage waveform simulation using an oscilloscope.

The large-scale manufacturing of flexible electronics is nowadays based on inkjet printing technology using specially formulated conductive inks, but achieving adequate wetting of different surfaces remains a challenge. In this work, the development of a silver nanoparticle-based functional ink for printing on flexible paper and plastic substrates is demonstrated. Amphiphilic silver nanoparticles with narrow particle size distribution and good dispersibility were prepared via a two-step wet chemical synthesis procedure. First, silver nanoparticles capped with poly(acrylic acid) were prepared, followed by an amidation reaction with 3-morpholynopropylamine (MPA) to increase their lipophilicity. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to study the interactions between the particles and the dispersion medium in detail. The amphiphilic nanoparticles were dispersed in solvents of different polarity and their physicochemical and rheological properties were determined. A stable ink containing 10 wt% amphiphilic silver nanoparticles was formulated and inkjet-printed on different surfaces, followed by intense pulsed light (IPL) sintering. Low sheet resistances of 3.85 Ω sq–1, 0.57 Ω sq–1 and 19.7 Ω sq–1 were obtained for the paper, coated poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and uncoated polyimide (PI) flexible substrates, respectively. Application of the nanoparticle ink for printed electronics was demonstrated via a simple flexible LED circuit.

Blue-phase liquid crystal (BPLC) is considered as the next-generation liquid crystal display material, but its practical application is seriously affected by a narrow temperature range and a long research period. In this paper, we used inkjet printing technology to prepare BPLC materials with high throughput, and try to use machine vision technology to test BPLC with high throughput. The “standard curve method” for establishing each printing channel and the “vector matching method” for searching the chromaticity value of the minimum distance were proposed to improve the accuracy of inkjet printing BPLC materials. For a large number of sample-phase images, we propose a machine learning method to identify the liquid crystal phase. In this paper, for the first time, the high-throughput preparation and high-throughput detection of 1080 BPLC samples with five common components by a comprehensive experimental method has been successfully realized. The results are helpful to improve the research efficiency of blue-phase materials and provide a theoretical basis and practical guidance for rapid screening of multi-component BPLC materials.

It is crucial to improve printing frequency and ink droplet quality in thermal inkjet printing. This paper proposed a hemispherical chamber, and we used the CFD (computational fluid dynamics model) to simulate the inkjet process. During the whole simulation process, we first researched the hemispherical chamber’s inkjet state equipped with straight, conical shrinkage, and conical diffusion nozzles. Based on the broken time and volume of the liquid column, the nozzle geometry of the hemispherical chamber was determined to be a conical shrinkage nozzle with a specific size of 15 µm in height and 15 µm in diameter at the top, and 20 µm in diameter at the bottom. Next, we researched the inkjet performance of the square chamber, the round chamber, and the trapezoidal chamber. The round chamber showed the best inkjet performance using 1.8 µs as the driving time and 10 MPa as the maximum bubble pressure. After that, we compared the existing thermal inkjet printing heads. The results showed that the hemispherical chamber inkjet head had the best performance, achieving 30 KHz high-frequency printing and having the most significant volume ratio of droplet to the chamber, reaching 14.9%. As opposed to the current 15 KHz printing frequency of the thermal inkjet heads, the hemispherical chamber inkjet head has higher inkjet performance, and the volume ratio between the droplet and the chamber meets the range standard of 10–15%. The hemispherical chamber structure can be applied to thermal inkjet printing, office printing, 3D printing, and bio-printing.
